Thanks for your work on these. Although Wikipedians generally prefer "Greek politician" (without the "a") in infoboxes and in some columns, we're generally expecting "Demosthenes, a Greek politician" in normal text. - Dank (push to talk) 21:09, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Portmanteau vs. compound

"A portmanteau also differs from a compound, which does not involve the truncation of parts of the stems of the blended words." Wikipedia

"compound. "pseudocompound. Iris graeberiana

[edit]

Hey there! I noticed you made some changes to the Iris graeberiana page based on the WP:Plants taxon template. I was thinking about changing the section heading 'Native' to 'Distribution' per the plant template and other plant pages I've seen but wanted to get your thoughts first, as I'm still a seedling editor. Thank you! Eucalyptusmint (talk) 16:47, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, for the note. The iris article was one of my first plant-based articles for wiki - so I was still learning when I wrote that one. Should have spotted the native heading - I use Distribution and habitat as a main heading and then Range and Habitat as subheadings now !! But you can edit how you wish I will 'monitor' from the watchlist ! Keep editing and learning, best way to do it.DavidAnstiss (talk) 17:05, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @DavidAnstiss

Thanks for your thanks on updating the Oxford herbarium :)

I was told to update the wikipages with the news of the new department that has taken over the Hebarium: Draft:Department of Biology, University of Oxford

I don't know how to use Wikipedia and I'm new to it, but I'm trying to update information by creating a new page to link to, as I was asked. I wondered if you have any advice on getting things published? You seemed like a frequent Wiki user so I thought I would ask.

48jkb35m (talk) 16:04, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi 48jkb35m, I found that as a new user, the best way of creating new pages ie plant species, genus and so on is to find a similar existing article (dealing with the same type of details) and then copy those details into the draft article and edit to suit, while adding new bits and pieces (with the appropriate references and such).
Looking at your draft; seems initially good.
I would keep this up to date. Wiki hates future news. Remember it is primarily an Encyclopedia - so stuff that happens in 2025 does not exist or may never happen. So, mention the construction but not the move!
Try to not use the main biology ref too much - this looks too much like using one source, another of wiki editors bugbears and hates!
Re - Notable staff (could be put into columns) {{Div col}}
placed at the start (of the list) and {{Div col end}}
at the end - would improve the look and format.
Personal note, I never used drafts - I just wrote the article and moved it into wiki space and edited when problems arose.
If you need help with that, would be happy to explain how to do that. DavidAnstiss (talk) 16:44, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@DavidAnstiss This is really helpful thank you. I was having trouble doing the columns thing, but I will give it a shot.
If theres a way to use the copy of this article and move it into the wiki space that would be handy to know. I'm coming up against very little assistance when trying to get this article published, despite being subjective and important news. 48jkb35m (talk) 08:35, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Just did it myself.

It is now live and it should link in with other articles. Make sure there is enough other articles linking to it (wiki hates 'orphans' - an article that does not have many links to and from it. Then it should be fine. Will do a tidy up on the talk page. Well done first article written!!!

Regards

As a note, the redirect at Plastique Tiara has been *locked* due to an AFD for a prior version of this article and attempted recreation. Plastique Tiara

[edit]

I'll be happy to answer any questions you have.Naraht (talk) 19:41, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

At the moment, I am very annoyed. I spent ages (many hours and days, thinking) on that article for it to be wiped out in one (frankly racist) move, without anyone informing me! Plus (why the hell) would I keep a 'draft' as I thought 'things' were kept on wiki. DavidAnstiss (talk) 21:36, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Racist, it *isn't*. I guarantee the administrator who deleted it doesn't care and likely doesn't have a *clue* what ancestry Plastique Tiara has. It *is* a (long term) effect that the original article for Plastique was created when the only thing that she was notable for was being on RPDR 11. Agreed, you got side-swiped by the prior history, which was ugly enough that anyone trying to recreate it would have hit it. Any references that you have, add them to the discussion on Talk:Plastique Tiara, showing notability *is* the sword that can cut through this, *and* if we can show notability, then we may be able to convince that administrator to restore the article. It is actually fairly difficult to have something *completely* removed without the ability of retrieval.
So honestly the next step is showing notability, take a look at the references that I added to the discussion and keep going...Naraht (talk) 23:34, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

January 2023

[edit]

Information icon Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give a page a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Geobalanus oblongifolius. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases for registered users, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. — JJMC89(T·C) 06:04, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I originally was trying to 'move' the article (as I have previously done before) but since the named article already existed. I thought it was better to 'copy and paste' across. I apologise for that decision. I had only 'copy and pasted' that article. 10:12, 31 January 2023 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Category:Diploschistaceae indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read! FYI

[edit]

From doi:10.1639/0007-2745-123.2.127 (available here): "Recently, Kraichak et al. (2018) proposed to divide Graphidaceae into four families, Diploschistaceae, Fissurinaceae, Graphidaceae s.str. and Thelotremataceae, based on the approach of temporal banding which attempts to harmonize rank-based taxa through their evolutionary age. This approach has been rejected, for various reasons (Lücking 2019): (1) by using a single criterion, the temporal banding approach does not properly reflect evolutionary histories across the different kingdoms of life and not even between closely related clades; (2) taxon sampling in Graphidaceae was incomplete and early diverging lineages such as subfamily Redonographoideae and several orphaned lineages in subfamily Graphidoideae, which would have resulted in additional families, were either omitted or ignored, such as Platythecium; (3) while Fissurinaceae, Graphidaceae and Thelotremataceae represent natural taxa, the family Diploschistaceae merged three unrelated groups that do not form a supported clade in other phylogenetic studies and hence represents a highly artificial taxon; (4) the proposed classification has little information content with regard to phenotypic variation and disparity and the reinstated families Graphidaceae and Thelotremataceae have little in common with the traditionally separated families under these names, making any effort to reinstate these families to preserve their use futile. In the present paper, we therefore continue to use Graphidaceae in the sense of Lücking et al. (2017a), which is also supported by our updated family-wide phylogenetic analysis, which contradicts the topology obtained by Kraichak et al. (2018)." Plus https://species.wikimedia.org/wiki/Graphidales also accepts the Order and the families plus other articles ( https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1055790321003134 ) accept the order and the 5 families. Also other research sites accept such as https://biotanz.landcareresearch.co.nz/scientific-names/cd6a12cc-65f3-472f-84bc-ed9c7c54c149. The fact that COL doesn't accept does shows that they are to be used as a guide not as a definitive authority. DavidAnstiss (talk) 16:27, 11 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That the Graphidales are an accepted order is not what is discussed here. The https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1055790321003134 you mention does not accept all of these families, just the Gomphillaceae (and there is no dispute about that family being accepted). Using Wikispecies as a source, I could argue equally validly (i.e. not validly – WikiSpecies shouldn't be used as a source) that it does not accept the subfamilies as families, see https://species.wikimedia.org/wiki/Graphidaceae. I can equally argue that since Wijayawardene et al. (2020, 2022) doesn't even address Lücking's well-reasoned objections, that they should not be used as a source for classifications where the temporal banding approach was used. "type species" vs. "type_species"

[edit]

Hi, just to note that although |type species= does work in taxoboxes, and so is technically correct, it's better to use |type_species= for consistency (and the first form is flagged in the error-tracking category). Peter coxhead (talk) 08:44, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

R. linoides

[edit]

I noticed that you created this article and have made almost the edits to it. (I found it because it had a typo that put it on a page that I periodically check, which lists articles with certain errors.) Anyway, after fixing the typo I italicized the article title, and then realized that it should be titled "Radiola linoides". But when I tried to rename it, I couldn't because there was already an article with that name – and that one is a redirect to "Radiola (plant)" – but it has much less information than the article you created. Do you know of a way to get everything into one article (preferably called "Radiola linoides" and in italics)? As far as I can tell, it may require administrative rights and may take a while because it's not a high priority, but if you know a way, feel free to do so. Ira Leviton (talk) 15:36, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You are right, about the name ! I had created the article in my user space with "Radiola linoides" as the name but when I tried to move it into user space I couldn't do so! As there was a previous redirect from that name. So I will have to wait until that redirected name space is deleted and then I (or another editor) can rename the article. I forgot to italicize the name when I was renaming the article. Also apology for the typo error. Hopefully it won't be too long before the name issue is resolved. DavidAnstiss (talk) 15:53, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'll try to get the ball rolling on it by asking at the Teahouse. Maybe somebody there will know how to do it or can get an administrator involved.
Otherwise, it might take forever. And no worries about the small errors – it gives me something to do.! Ira Leviton (talk) 19:04, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, wait – it looks like it's all done already. Ira Leviton (talk) 20:20, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed all the notifications when I logged in this afternoon, that it had been moved to "Radiola linoides" ! Was so pleased that it had happened so quickly!!DavidAnstiss (talk) 21:11, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Amphisphaeriales

[edit]

Hi David: You've tagged Amphisphaeriales as a lichen order, but I'm not seeing that any of the families in that order are currently tagged to show that they contain lichens. Can you please help and let me which ones should be tagged as lichen families – and which of the genera in those families contain lichens so that they can be tagged appropriately as well? Thanks! MeegsC (talk) 11:47, 1 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think it was a 'copy and paste' error, I normally create articles using a former article as a template and work around that before 'uploading' from my user area. I was looking myself if it was on the lichen list and no. So I will remove later, (heading out to work now!).DavidAnstiss (talk) 09:23, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Leaving a note in case the editor is unblocked.

Selene Wamucii is an unreliable source for plants (AI generated text?). In this instance a British and Irish endemic is obviously not going to be used as a medicinal plant in the Himalayas, India and Nepal. And it's a stretch to describe is as being used as an ornamental plant - I've seem it in the collection of whitebeams as Ness Botanic Gardens, and it might turn up in council plantings of native plants. (The RHS database has no sources for the species.) Lavateraguy (talk) 09:39, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
