Totallly non-critical and positive welcome

Its nice to see you editing. From my user page you will see that I have been wikipedia for 7 years, and have about 9000 edits to my name- and I watch some of the articles you have improved. From the tags above there are about 2 sentences that are worth reading- and the guys at Wikipedia:WikiProject Kent will give a hand at sorting things out. Do join the Wikiproject Kent group it keeps you in touch- and I have a talk page. --ClemRutter (talk) 22:04, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi from a friendly Admin who is a member of WP:KENT! Sorry you've had a bit of a rough intro to Wikipedia. It does take a while to learn all the ins and outs (still learning myself and I'm an admin, LOL). Anything I can help with please ask. Mjroots (talk) 21:09, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Trosley Country Park

My apologies for tagging Trosley Country Park for speedy deletion. I made a mistake. Please do not be discouraged from editing Wikipedia and consider joining the WikiProject Kent. And please next time please be a little more careful with copyrighted content. Gabriele449 (talk) 21:26, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Having checked the article, it was apparently a copyvio on creation, and thus the deletion was correct.
That said, Trosley Country Park would be notable enough to sustain an article. You could create a new article, in your own words, using that website (amongst others) as a source. As there is no rush, it may be better for now to concentrate on improving existing articles to get a feel for editing Wikipedia before creating a new article. Chatham Central railway station - location

Comparing the 1909 OS map and any present day aerial view (both from the article location link), I reckon that the actual station (tracks & platform) was located along the NE half of the car park off Doust Way. The Doust Way houses are sited slightly further to the NE, and may not even be in the former station yard. Clankypup (talk) 10:42, 13 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Riverside Country Park

After your last edit summary- I checked to see how much of my original article you had left--- and I can now claim credit contributing the geotag and the word is!

But I was thinking do we need to find a Infobox for all these country park articles- if there isn't one available I gladly help write one. --ClemRutter (talk) 19:28, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

sorry for taking control of your article clem ! I think I got carried away :) Fun finding out all the info about this park I often go to! I have seen Infoboxs but have never created one! DavidAnstiss (talk) 19:34, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have had a look and found that there is already a template See: Lakenheath Fen RSPB reserve where it is used. Template:Infobox park gives the low down. Its a pity because they are fun to write- I did Template:Infobox Mill building which is quite specialised --ClemRutter (talk) 15:29, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Milton Regis

Hi David. I have just been checking the contributors to Milton Regis and came across you. I see you are working on Church Marshes Country Park and just wished to alter you to the fact that I am seriously revamping the Milton article. Have you any idea when your Church Marshes page will be moved to main namespace? I would like to link to it and don't want to duplicate effort. Regards, Martin of Sheffield (talk) 12:19, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Martin, As you see for my talk page I have done quite a few Kent Country Parks and have only just started on the Country Park History - mainly because you were re-doing the Milton Regis article :) I hope to finish it within the next week or so! I am not going to do anything about the church - but put a note to look at the Milton Regis article! I have put in a small geography section to include the river/creek. Albums and images

You're using your sandbox to work on an article about Phildel, and another about her album. That's fine.

You've uploaded images of her album. That's less fine; you can't use images of album covers in your sandbox. Wikipedia's lawyers have said that we can only get away with Fair Use images in articles.

And then you uploaded the album cover to Commons as "own work".

You're not allowed to do that. The image is being deleted as a copyright violation. Even if you scanned the image in yourself, that's not what 'own work' means. Don't upload fair-use images until the article for which they're meant is in mainspace, and don't upload them to Commons as "own work". DS (talk) 14:29, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How do I find an image for the album that is a 'fair-use' image. That image has been used on various blogs and websites that I have been using to create the 2 articles about Phildel and her album.
Wikipedia's lawyers have said that (using a non-free image -- for instance, an album cover -- on a Wikipedia page) is acceptable under Fair Use guidelines if it is within an article. Userspace is not acceptable, even if it is a proto-article that you're working on in your sandbox. You should only upload the nonfree image to Wikipedia's servers once (the article that it's for) is ready. And you should never upload a nonfree image to Commons; Commons is only for free images.
And remember, "free" and "nonfree" are not defined in terms of whether you had to pay for the jpg. They're defined in terms of the image copyright. If you can't find a copyright-free photo of Phildel, that's too bad; it means that the article will have no photo for now. Wikipedia's lawyers have said that as long as the person is still alive, then it is possible for someone to take a copyright-free photo of them; it's "replaceable" (with certain very rare exceptions like "is serving a life sentence without possibility of parole, ever"). If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. DS (talk) 15:29, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mount Ephraim Gardens

Hey David. The last sentence in this article - "The gardens also include a Ha-ha. Built in C18 of red brick. About 3 feet high, and approximately 100 yards in length, with double curve plan." - appears to be copied verbatim from the source. What copyright license is the source under? PS Medway Queen

Hello namesake. From what I see, your reversion of revision 581609586 is mistaken. At present neither Wingfield Castle nor Medway Queen are mobile (except in the sense that both are afloat and can be towed). Although it is the intention that MQ be restored to self-propulsion (and I hope that she is), that may not happen for some time or at all. How do you feel about a lead:

The PS Medway Queen is a former British estuary paddle steamer built in 1924. She was one of the "little ships of Dunkirk", making a record 7 trips and rescuing 7000 men in the evacuation of Dunkirk. Under a programme of restoration, a replica hull has been built and funds are being raised to restore the rest of her to operational condition.

The detail of the Lottery funding should be in the article itself. That needs considerable work - but you will see from the Talk page that user:Storye_book intends having a look at this, so I will hold off for the moment. Davidships (talk) 20:59, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am happy with that edit! I only watch the article for vandalism anyway! (but do live in Gillingham) so have I slight extra interest! DavidAnstiss (talk) 21:51, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thames barges

Hello - Thanks for your reply re MQ.

On Thames barges, I am interested but have no particular expertise or handy sources. As well as some links at Thames sailing barge, there is an article currently named Sailing barge Thalatta which gives a possible target for content, though it needs a strong copy-edit, and renaming to something like Thalatta (barge) (my preferred) or SB Thalatta.

Cambria already has a stub at SB Cambria, which perhaps also ought to be renamed. Davidships (talk) 23:37, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for these! Will work-on my cambria article on my user page and then copy it in later! DavidAnstiss (talk) 15:16, 3 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Explaining

I patrolled your page. I went through the enormously-backlogged list of newly-created pages and confirmed that your page was okay: not spam, not an attack page, not a copyright violation, not any of the other reasons for which I would delete someone's page without asking. Then I clicked "patrolled" to remove it from the list of "pages that have not yet been patrolled", and moved on to the next entry. That's all. DS (talk) 15:54, 4 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

thank you for explaining that ! Was just slightly worried about the review bit - but thanks for the explaination DavidAnstiss (talk) 16:46, 4 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Screenshot of Geograph Ireland.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Screenshot of Geograph Ireland.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 15:28, 7 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image File:Screenshot of the DVD of Saving Britain’s Past.jpg

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Screenshot of the DVD of Saving Britain’s Past.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Lists of botanists by author abbreviation

Hi, it's always good to have new names added to these lists. A couple of points:

  • You always need to check by an author search in IPNI, since this is the only definitive source. E.g. you added the wrong Abramov recently – see [1].
  • There are n-dashes rather than hyphens between the bolded abbreviation and the name, and between birth and death year, as per the MOS. If you're not sure how to produce n-dashes, just copy a previous line and change it.

Peter coxhead (talk) 11:57, 8 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Am looking at the link now. Will try and make an article on Abramov and did find one other Abramov (now know there are 3 - gulp). I will also try and remember the date dash thing.DavidAnstiss (talk) 14:27, 8 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Lists of botanists by author abbreviation

Always good to see more entries in these lists. A couple of minor points: the alphabetic order is as if there are no full stops, spaces, etc. and all the letters are capitals (necessary because of the very varied way the standard abbreviations get written, sometimes with spaces, sometimes not); the character between the birth and death years should be an endash, not a hyphen, as per the MOS. Thanks! Peter coxhead (talk) 18:27, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, for that edit. Understand the order now - I think ! Forgot about the hypen (had copied it direct from Plant List) ! Will try and remember to edit that next time! DavidAnstiss (talk) 10:36, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Irises

Hi David, I just wanted to remark that I had thought it should be possible to find a recent classification of the irises, because there has been a lot of work on their molecular phylogenetics, but I can't find such a thing. I think it is true that Section Reticulatae is not validly published, as seemed likely from its non-presence in the International Plant Names Index, but it would be necessary to put a classification together from pieces in recent journal articles (and that would probably be assailed as WP:OR). The indexes, http://apps.kew.org/wcsp/qsearch.do and http://tropicos.org don't say which species are in which subgenus, section, or series. Perhaps it is best to leave the classification as the one from the 1982 book. Best wishes, Sminthopsis84 (talk) 21:23, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for that, I am finding that the classification system seems to be in a state of flux at the moment. With some Iris societys having one system (Pacific wetland and dryland) and others having a different system. Also found a recent article by Tony Hall (2000) on the genetics lumping Scorpirises and reticulas together ! Although, I think I got carried away with the Cassidy book system - before checking others ! Did not know about Plant list and IPNI until talking to Peter coxhead (about botanists) ! Will stick to the 1982 Mathew system until agreement is reached. DavidAnstiss (talk) 09:28, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't realize until I went through the iris articles just now what an enormous amount of work you had put in. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 13:57, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I have a 'silly' plan to complete all the iris series - about 86 more to go ! and with edits to current stubs of iris articles as I tackle each section and an occasional botanist and other articles to complete !16:34, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
That's very dedicated of you. (Strangely, there doesn't seem to be suitable emoticon to express awe rather than astonishment.) Sminthopsis84 (talk) 18:42, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Style for botanical authorities

I'll add my support to the praise above for the work you've been doing on irises! Just a small styling point. In taxoboxes and lists of species, it's become the norm to put botanical authorities in a smaller font. Thus in a list of synonyms in a taxobox, rather than:

  • Iris cepifolia Stokes

use

  • Iris cepifolia Stokes

There are several ways to get the correct format.

  • ''Iris cepifolia'' <small>Stokes</small>
  • ''Iris cepifolia'' {{small|Stokes}}
  • Use {{Species list}} which is the easiest for a list of names and authorities.

Keep up the good work! Peter coxhead (talk) 11:24, 13 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you - will try amend my articles. Have never used Species list before ! Will have a look at that today.DavidAnstiss (talk) 13:54, 13 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Program to format synonym lists

Hi David, I wonder if you might find useful a little Javascript program that you can find a link to at the top of my user page (click the green box), for rather rapidly formatting synonym lists from theplantlist.org. It needs to be downloaded, and then it runs in a browser (I do that by dragging the .html file to an open tab in Firefox). It is written in Javascript so that all the source code can easily be inspected so no sneaky things can be in there. The link from my user page takes you to a sub-page that is the documentation for the program. One particular reason for mentioning this to you is that there is potential for making variants of it to work with other databases (I have one that I haven't uploaded that takes synonym lists from The World Checklist of Selected Plant Families, with an option to work a little differently if it is working on synonyms for a genus or for a species). I hope that the documentation is easy to follow, but if you are interested and find that it isn't easy to follow, please ask me for help. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 14:42, 19 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Have never used any Javascript programs before, am interested but very nervous of using something that could complicate or disrupt other articles ! DavidAnstiss (talk) 15:33, 19 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, all the data manipulation uses copy-and-paste (control-C and control-P in Windows). The program opens in the window with two areas for you to paste in the copied text from the plantlist page and the copied URL, then when you click "convert" it produces in another text box the reformatted text which you can then copy and past into a wikipedia page. You could try it out without ever touching wikipedia. It produces "|synonyms = ... |synonyms_ref = ..." with the citation, the accessdate, and it sorts the species names alphabetically in case they weren't already sorted. It's a bit clever in that it drops lines that don't have the right format, so you don't have to be careful to copy only the appropriate lines from the TPL page. Anyway, I just thought you might find it useful for the Iris work that you are doing. Best wishes, Sminthopsis84 (talk) 17:55, 19 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Iris articles

Great work you're doing creating Iris articles. Could I encourage you to use the standard section names and ordering as per the WP:PLANTS template? Peter coxhead (talk) 11:53, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I see from your edits to Iris speculatrix, the order of the sections (and from the template) and will apply this 'standard' all my new articles.DavidAnstiss (talk) 10:11, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it's not a hard and fast rule that you have to use the template, but I think it's a good idea unless there are particular reasons to do otherwise. The only strong point I'd make is that since there are editors around who quote WP:NOTMANUAL to discourage too much being written about cultivation, it's never a good idea to put the Cultivation section first.
Keep up the good work! Peter coxhead (talk) 12:13, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Iris benacensis
added a link pointing to Tyrol
Hi David. I'm stunned at all your work on Irises! You might like to take a look at the use of 'Tyrol' in the I. benacensis article? I've already dared to fix on Tyrol-->South Tyrol link - which you seemed to approve of, but good old Disambiguation tool identified a second use of Tyrol. I'm not quite sure which is the best of the Wikipedia meanings of Tyrol to use, and don't want to adversely alter the meaning by using the wrong one (possibly for a second time!). Cheers. Parkywiki (talk) 18:46, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Parkywiki, thanks for your note. Have altered the text to fix the disambiguation - according to the refs I think they mean South Tyrol the province - not the town !

Olga Fedtschenko

Hi David, I see you have a draft of Olga Fedtschenko from last October. I only just spotted it and I have created a stub for her (see my contrib list). My intention was to get it to start? size and then DYK it. Do you fancy splicing in your stuff and we can both put this forward? Cheers Victuallers (talk) 00:00, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Victuallers, I am very happy to share what stuff I had gathered on Olga, for the article. Although, I am in the middle of creating my 250th wiki article - on 'Lowell Fitz Randolph' (who had worked on the chromosome studies of iris and was Cornell University professor), but should be uploading that Friday. So will have more time after that, to add to the Olga article ! DavidAnstiss (talk) 17:13, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello TWL users! We hope JSTOR has been a useful resource for your work. We're organizing a cleanup drive to correct dead links to JSTOR articles – these require JSTOR access and cannot easily be corrected by bot. We'd love for you to jump in and help out!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Naomi Feinbrun-Dothan - Kishinev pogrom

On https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naomi_Feinbrun-Dothan "Kishinev pogrom boundary" sounds as if it had been decided that only certain streets would be affected by the pogrom. Nurit Kirsh (http://jwa.org/encyclopedia/article/feinbrun-dotan-naomi) says "the 1905 Kishinev pogrom did not reach the street where the family had lived" which leaves the issue open. Her words can be avoided by saying "the the 1905 pogrom didn't reach the family's street". Mcljlm (talk) 11:56, 22 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, have tweaked the words and meaning.DavidAnstiss (talk) 16:09, 22 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
