Question about references
Hi, Thanks for dropping by on my talk page. I do have a question for you actually. I am trying to use the same footnote multiple times, but I can't get it to work. Do you know what I am doing wrong?
The citation in question: <ref name=spanamwar>{{Citation|url=http://www.spanamwar.com/Mainemo1.htm|title=What Destroyed the USS MAINE - An opinion|author=Edward P. McMorrow|publisher=spanamwar.com|accessdate=April 7, 2010}}</ref>
and I am trying to call it back by, but the preview gives a warning: Citations with no name can't be empty. [1]
Edit: you can't actually see them on your page, doh. You can in edit mode though.
Also, anyway to save your work in progress without submitting it? I made some changes to the article, but I am only half done and submitting it now would just look weird.
Thanks for any response! Yoenit (talk) 22:12, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
- Hmm, the Cite seems to be in order have you tried just copying and pasting it? Also if you want it to show up you can use the <nowiki>Insert non-formatted text here</nowiki> tag, which I've used above.
- And no, there really is no way to save your text in mid-edit and come back unless you wanted to create a sandbox in your userspace, but I'd advise against it if it's actually an article that'd be edited before you had finished your changes. Hope that helps. Regards, --SKATER Speak. 22:36, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

IP vandalism and ANI
Aye, I wasn't sure if you were asking me or people in general, hence my note about not being an admin - though I realised later that I'd then appeared to ask you a range-block question in return - indenting ain't easy ;-)
Regarding not being an admin, no, it's true, I'm not! I've not felt up to it in the past, and right now I'm just returning from a 6 month wiki-break, so I don't feel up for it now either. Maybe in the future, but maybe not... thanks for your kind comment though!

- Indenting is sort of like Godwins law, the more indents there are, the more likely it seems that someone thinks the other is an admin. Thanks for your assistance so far :). Regards,--SKATER Speak. 20:37, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

I've been using Wikipedia for years, but only last month did I start editing. There are some things I am not 100% proficient at, such as copyright laws, so I always read the Wiki-copyright page before I write anything. I usually lurk in the Recent Changes area, watching for vandals with the help of Twinkle. I am working on a Bot in spare time, and hope to have him up and running soon. Other than that, I can't think of a question or concern this second, but I am sure I'll think of something. Thanks again! :) --MithrandirAgain (Talk!) 02:07, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Re-your message- Radio23 image use
Hi
I've listed the author as Radio 23 as it was created by the staff of Radio 23 who have given me permission to use the image in the public domain. As they will be sending me an image with a better resolution with which I will replace this one, please tell me what I should do if listing the author of the image is not good enough? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fiedorczuk (talk • contribs) 13:50, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
- The file you uploaded neither has an author nor a license that specifies the permissions that go along with it's use. If you can provide both of those things (and assuming you do have the permission to use it) it will be fine. Regards,--SKATER Hmm? 14:08, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
Hi
The author is Radio 23, they have given public domain permission as stated in the file page- what more do I need to do? Sorry, quite new to wiki so please be patient if I am doing something wrong here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fiedorczuk (talk • contribs) 14:21, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
- Just go into the [the file] and edit the table you have to specify the Source, author, and Desciption. Right now you have not done any of the following. Then you must add the License, and add {{PD-author|name}} for the license, asssuming he really did add it into the public domain Also, please sign with your posts with the four tildes (~~~~) or hitting the signature button. Re-Hacker.jpg
uploaded and specified PD - I think (I hate Wiki's interface, I have no idea if anything works) - I personally created the image from a screen cap of the FPO title-card, and put some style treatments (texture), cloned art (wall extension), and typography.Although it is an original piece of art (found-art assemblage) since the source only makes up a small fraction of the rest - I'm not into locking down copyrights on collages and would like anyone to use / modify. Please revert the flag or do whatever voo-doo this user-hostile interface site does. Thanks.
- I'm new to the world of images on wiki, so I may very well be mistaken myself, but right now are you saying you wish to release it into the public domain?--SKATER Hmm? 21:42, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
Yes it should have been from the outset - didn't see the pull-down. Uploaded and specified PD on the pull-down the second time - STILL don't see the damn PD badge. I have no idea what the hell to do - but my story hasn't changed. I made it, anyone can use it. Enjoy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mgabrys (talk • contribs) 21:57, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
- Fixed, added the public domain tag and removed deletion tag. This appears to be it's own form of art and not a screen cap from something that was copyrighted. --SKATER Hmm? 22:41, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
Now the image is missing - what the hell is going on!?
Don't sweat it. You people are confusing. I'll post it on Flickr (less-conflicting).—Preceding unsigned comment added by Mgabrys (talk • contribs) 23:23, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
- First, Wikipedia is not a place to show off your images. You could use a site like Deviantart or Flickr if that's what you wished to do, but this is an encyclopedia. As I told you, their was a chance I could be wrong and this just turned out to be the case, according to my mentor [[User:Fastily] the file is a copyright violation. We cannot accept copyright material unless it meets our Fair use rationale. I apologize fore my mistake, however.--SKATER Hmm? 23:37, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
If it's "my" image - how can it be a copyright violation? I don't have time to explain copyright law today (I work in publishing). Thanks for the heads-up and attempts to fix tho even if the outcome was balderdash.
- If it's your image then you just have to specify your the copyright holder. Have a look at WP:DCP, it'll tell you what to do.--SKATER Hmm? 01:52, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

The article Anthony Armstrong (musician) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Non-notable musician that fails WP:MUSICBIO and has been tagged as possibly not meeting notability guidelines for five months.
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Aspects (talk) 03:51, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
- I happened to see this and de-prodded this since you seem to have retired. I don't really understand why someone who spent so much time on here would retire completely, if there were not attempts to compromise their identity. Retiring from the kind of stuff "your crowd" seems to do is one thing - the "vandal-fighting", etc - but there's always new knowledge to contribute, isn't there? Then again, I believe in this study here: http://www.aaronsw.com/weblog/whowriteswikipedia ... There needs to be less "fighting", less "us vs them", less editing wikipedia for "badges" and "ego" and "administratorship", and more collaboration and things like that. Wikipedia needs to encourage a lot more casual contributors - and it should be the job of 'experienced' people to help them along, not make their life more difficult. Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, such as on WP:WQA, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You could also click on the signature button or located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you. Gerardw (talk) 21:54, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

- Hi Uncertianperson, Unfortunately at this time I do not feel that you meet the requirements of Adminship. I understand your off to a great start editing, however you need many THOUSAND of edits. I have 6,000 and I am considered on the low side of experience. Your RFA would close instantly per WP:NOTNOW. At this time I don't feel comfortable nominating you.--SKATER Is Back 03:29, 1 November 2011 (UTC)
I understand, but when you feel I am ready, please feel free to nominate me. Thanks! Uncertianperson (talk) 17:56, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
- I will keep periodic tracks of your edits, but please understand that gaining the experience to be on admin on this project can take a very long time. Just focus on being a normal editor for now, right about what you're interested in. Maybe expand a few articles for WP:DYK, or get experience fighting vandalism or files, or learn about WP:CSD. These are some of the things I do and I'll be happy to mentor you when you need it.--SKATER Is Back 18:13, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

Considering an RfA
Hey Skater. Mind taking a look at my contributions and giving me your thoughts on a possible RfA? I'm just feeling it out right now, and I'd like to get some input before I actually try for it. You'll notice that I don't have nearly the volume of edits as many others (only around 1600 globally), however I have been a part of the community for a long while now (my first edit being on February 23, 2006). Now there have been time periods in this where I've edited more and edited less as time allows, however I am getting back into the swing of things now! Thanks, and no hard feelings if you don't think I'm quite ready for it. Any input is greatly appreciated! nf utvol (talk) 19:33, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
Another RfA
Hello, Skater,
I am the beginner in Wikipedia, but would like to become an admin sometime, so your kind assistance would be very useful to me. I hope to count on your nomination as I reach the level of edits required by Wiki rules (soon, hopefully) - have only 1500+ edits so far in English Wiki. I will really appreciate your support when I reach the edit number necessary for adminship --Orekhova (talk) 14:14, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Orekhova, there actually isn't an amount of edits required to be an admin per say. It's just that most people prefer to see a set amount that varies per each !voter. You are right that most people will not support with just 1500 edits, I have near 6,000 and my experience is still on the low side. My best advice is don't rush it, be patient and work on doing what you enjoy on Wikipedia. If you do it well enough, and i can't find any glaring issues you will happily have my support when the time comes. Best of luck. Regards--SKATER Is Back 14:31, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

New Page Triage engagement strategy released
Hey guys!
I'm dropping you a note because you filled out the New Page Patrol survey, and indicated you'd be interested in being contacted about follow-up work. This is to notify you that we've finally released both the initial documentation about the project and also the engagement strategy, which sets out how we plan to work with the community on this. Please give both a read, and leave any comments or suggestions you have on the talkpage, on my talkpage, or in my inbox - okeyeswikimedia.org.
It's awesome to finally get to start work on this! :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 02:16, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

DYK Question
Hi PFHLai, hope all is well. I was working on an article in userspace for a DYK when It's finally ready. My question is does the 10 day limit count when the article is in userspace and not in article space? Regards, --SKATER Is Back 14:39, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you for your question, Skater. According to WP:DYKSG#D8, the clock doesn't start till the article gets moved into article space. You can take your time to build your article when it is in your personal sandbox for as long as you need. Hope this helps. BTW, it's 5 days, not 10. Good luck on your DYK nomination. Happy editing. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 02:20, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

DYK reviewing: hook citations
I notice that you're new to DYK reviewing—welcome to the club!—so I wanted to let you know about something you need to include in your reviews. Hook facts must both be included in the article, and be supported by an inline citation. This is one of the most crucial things in a review, along with article size and hook length. You should even check the citation in question: read the source (if available) to be sure it does support the fact.
This was true in Template:Did you know nominations/Robert Stephenson (baseball): although the fact that Stephenson had two no-hitters in his senior year was supported by the nearest inline citation, it didn't mention that they were in consecutive games, so the "back-to-back" portion of the hook was unsupported. In such a case, a request needs to be made for a suitable citation; if one doesn't exist, then the hook will have to be modified. (I made that request this morning, and the author has since supplied a good citation, which now appears after the sentence in question.)
For Template:Did you know nominations/Backmuir Wood, the article never mentions the number "30 acres" anywhere. There are various other numbers, which may or may not add up to 30, but the article doesn't include 30, so the hook can't. It'll be up to the author to decide what to do, though the reviewew can suggest possibilities, including alternate hooks. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:32, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Statements in BLPs that lack reliable sources
Hi Skater.
Regarding this edit that you made, I have some questions.
(1) Is this article a biography of a living person, in your view?
(2) If so, should you consider doing something about the (numerous!) statements that the youtube video was intending to support, not just removing the youtube video link? --Demiurge1000 (talk) 03:31, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
- I'm currently working to replace the sources as we speak. Yes Aaron Rodgers is a living person (At least I hope he is, or the Packers are in trouble for next year). You caught me in mid edit, which I am fixing with edits not from youtube. In Hindsight, I probably should have done it in one edit. --SKATER Is Back 03:35, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you, that makes it much clearer what you intend. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 03:42, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

The definition of intangibles is something that cannot be touched or in this case measured. Leadership is an example of an intangible. Someone's 40 time is very much tangible.--Chicofiesta13 (talk) 06:42, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Your request for nomination
OK, I've had some time to take a look at you and your track record. If I were to see your name at RfA now, I'd support you, but I'm not 100% sure that the larger community would, so here's my advice. Keep chugging along doing what you're doing for another few months, and stay involved in admin-related areas. If you still like it after that time, then go for it and I'll be happy to nominate you. If you were to go now, I'd still be fine nominating you, but if it doesn't pass then it'll be at least 6 more months before you run another RfA. Let me know what you want to do. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 17:43, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
- Give me some time to consider it. I appreciate you looking me over Blade! I at least want to wait for the Peer Review and GA review of Aaron Rodgers before I do anything.--SKATER Is Back 18:18, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
- Sounds good, look forward to hearing from you. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 18:28, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
- Having thought about it, once Aaron Rodgers is a GA, I'd like to go ahead and run. If I don't get it then so what? Adminship is no big deal--SKATER Is Back 20:18, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
- All right, sounds good. I'll start working on a nomination statement; you might get a few opposes over your previous RfAs (there are a very few people who are strange about that), but I don't think that should be a major issue. Your activity level would probably generate the most opposes, but I don't think it'll be a huge deal. But yeah, definitely finish your GA stuff; RfA tends to suck up a lot of time, even if it goes smoothly. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 20:39, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
- Third times the charm right?--SKATER Is Back 20:42, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
- Errrrr, ummm, I thought you'd wait a bit. Casliber (talk · contribs) 21:22, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
- I am waiting. Once I get a peer review and GA review over with Rodgers it'll probably be a few more weeks. At least I thought so anyways.--SKATER Is Back 23:27, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
- Errrrr, ummm, I thought you'd wait a bit. Casliber (talk · contribs) 21:22, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
- If you want to run, I would advise you to take at least 3-6 months to prepare for it. If you are planning now, go after 3-6 months and make your profile strong. It is very less likely for you to succeed if you go in 1-2 months from now. Please take it positively, I just advised :) →TheSpecialUserTalkContributions* 14:27, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
- I will hold off, seems to be the majority consensus.--SKATER Is Back 14:33, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Recall
Please don't ask RFA candidates if they will be open to recall. It is divisive and unhelpful. Thanks. Hipocrite (talk) 13:05, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
- How is that divisive and unhelpful when it could change my opinion of whether or not to support the candidate? Regards--SKATER Is Back 13:06, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
- Please review Wikipedia_talk:Requests_for_adminship/Archive_164#Recall_blanket_voting, [1], Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2008_August_17#Category:Wikipedia_administrators_open_to_recall, and Wikipedia_talk:Administrators_open_to_recall/Archive_3#The_admin_recall_process_is_dead_.28WP:AN.29. Hipocrite (talk) 13:10, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
- So from what I've seen with all of those is that there is no consensus on whether or not the question should be acceptable. I'm sorry you found offense to it, but I respectfully have to disagree that it is divisive and/or unhelpful. I believe administrators should be held accountable, and in this system that people find so broken it it the best that we have. I agree with your point, that convincing them to resign is a good point, but other criteria apply and I like to at least have enough good faith that people who passed through the process are at least honest. (Idealistic I know)--SKATER Is Back 13:19, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

- Oh, I noticed about Aaron Rodgers Day - his article should explain that 12/12/12 was selected because he has jersey #12. It's not obvious why the day was selected except to the superfans like us. :P Royalbroil 02:31, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
- Hey thanks a bunch! It actually brightened my day to see someone enjoyed reading an article that I worked on. I shook my head when I saw that the rookies the Packers drafted had such short stubs when there is so much information available. Repost of Bare Infinity
A tag has been placed on Bare Infinity requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia, because it appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion process. If you can indicate how it is different from the previously posted material, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this: which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}

Editor Review
I am currently cleaning up the backlog over at Editor Review and I found this in the backlog. As it is no longer posted on the main page at Editor Review, I was wondering if I should remove it from the backlogs and put it to rest or if I should repost it for community review. I will remove it from the backlogs three days from now if I am not given a response.—cyberpower OfflineHappy 2013 23:04, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Articles you might like to edit, from SuggestBot
We are currently running a study on the effects of adding additional information to SuggestBot's suggestions. Participation in the study is voluntary. Should you wish to not participate in the study, or have questions or concerns, you can find contact information on the SuggestBot study page.
IMPORTANT CHANGES: We have modified the selection of articles SuggestBot suggests and altered the design to incorporate more information about the articles, as described in this explanation.
Note: All columns in this table are sortable, allowing you to rearrange the table so the articles most interesting to you are shown at the top. All images have mouse-over popups with more information.
Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions
We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:
- Views/Day
- Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
- Quality
- Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.
The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:
- Content
- Is more content needed?
- Headings
- Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
- Images
- Is the number of illustrative images about right?
- Links
- Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
- Sources
- For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?
SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. We appreciate that you have signed up to receive suggestions regularly, your contributions make Wikipedia better — thanks for helping!

Disambiguation link notification for October 21
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Kevin Dorsey, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Redshirt (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
