Alpheidae sources
Hi Ceranthor,
Do you have any more details about the sources used in your recent additions to Alpheidae (these edits)? I can make some educated guesses (although I don't know which volume in one case), but I'd rather be sure. --Stemonitis (talk) 17:06, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
- Oh, sorry! They are taken from book sources; I'll add them in there asap. Sorry for the inconvenience. ceranthor 17:41, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
The article has been reviewed and is on hold pending revision. See the talk page for the review. WTF? (talk) 17:46, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
Kilauea
We talked about this sometime before, but I absolutely cannot do Kilauea without some support. I'm going on vacation in a couple of weeks and for now I'm busy on Hualālai, but it's a looming threat and we got to talk about how we're going to handle it. (btw my laptop finally got fixed, which is good news for Wikipedia) ResMar 03:34, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
- Okay. I thought you were inactive. I think we can try to get it to GA by the end of summer. Other projects include getting an FT - which involves featuring Armero tragedy and Omayra Sanchez - and getting Mount Pinatubo and Plate tectonics to GA/FA. That's quite a lot to do! ceranthor 17:22, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Sort of still am, as evidented by the long draw between that comment and this one. Anyway, I had a few apointments and such to wrap up, and happiily, regents are finally over. Howeve I'm leaving for vacation soon, but my internet connectivity there is as my dad says "tenatively good." I think I'll start off by setting up a TOC in a sandbox somewhere. Possibly tommorow :D ResMar 03:09, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
- Cool, I think I can work on it today. ceranthor 11:40, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
Hi. I made a few copyedits to this, but see some more areas that can be cleaned up if you don't mind having someone jump in. I see a few problems that are fairly easily fixed and don't mind posting a little review on the talk page if that would be helpful. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 00:37, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 June newsletter
We're half way through 2010, and the end of the WikiCup is in sight! Round 3 is over, and we're down to our final 16. Our pool winners were Ian Rose (submissions) (A), Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (B, and the round's overall leader), ThinkBlue (submissions) (C) Casliber (submissions) and TonyTheTiger (submissions) (D, joint), but, with the scores reset, everything is to play for in our last pooled round. The pools will be up before midnight tonight, and have been selected randomly by J Milburn. This will be the toughest round yet, and so, as ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.
Though unaffiliated with the WikiCup, July sees the third Great Wikipedia Dramaout- a project with not dissimilar goals to the WikiCup. Everyone is welcome to take part and do their bit to contribute to the encyclopedia itself.
If you're interested in the scores for the last round of the Cup, please take a look at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Round 3 and Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Full/Round 3. Our thanks go to Stone (submissions) for compiling these. As was predicted, Group C ended up the "Group of Death", with 670 points required for second place, and, therefore, automatic promotion. This round will probably be even tougher- again, the top two from each of the two groups will make it through, while the twelve remaining participants will compete for four wildcard places- good luck everyone! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. J Milburn, Fox and The ed17

Ramapo Fault Regional Geology
Hey. Noticed you're in the process of expanding the regional geology section of the Ramapo Fault. I was thinking of the doing the same a while ago, but I kind of put it on the back burner.
I see you've included a bit of detail on the Valley and Ridge Province, but this generally has little to do with the fault. The Ramapo Fault separates the Reading Prong (including the NY-NJ Highlands) from the Newark Basin. The Valley and Ridge Province is beyond the Reading Prong to the northwest and is separated by an unrelated fault. I think the message to send via the regional geology section is that the existence of the Highlands and the Newark Basin is owed to the fault, in the sense that the Ramapo Fault is the main bounding fault in what is essentially a half graben formed during the rifting of Pangaea. One side of the fault, the Newark Basin (east), was thrust down into the Earth, which in turn caused the Highlands (west) to rise up. A map showing the location of the fault in NJ with respect to regional geology can be found here. The aforementioned website, run by Roy W. Schlische at Rutgers University, is particularly informative on both the Newark Basin and Ramapo Fault (the 'normal fault' or 'border fault' described in the site's introduction). Here is the main page of his site.
There is a lot of other information scattered across the web, beyond just the geology, and I really want to bring it together to drive this particular article to true encyclopedic depth.
I eventually hope to create articles or sections for the Hopewell, Flemington, and Chalfont faults, which are the largest secondary faults of the Ramapo Fault System. Any help you could provide here would be awesome.
Lithium6ion (talk) 02:59, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Alright, I was aware of that situation, I was just adding the information to give the article a little more interesting stuff... but you're probably right. Thanks for the paper, I'm looking forward to formally starting on the article.

Is it ready?
Kinda tenacious about this one. Lot of sources that woulda really helped aren't there to be found. Wanted a second opinion. What do you think of Hualālai? ResMar 22:25, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
- I think you're referring to FAC, but for now I think you should nominate it at GAN. Just from browsing the article it looks like it could be expanded some more in order to be fully comprehensive. I'm working on Armero tragedy diligently at the moment but tomorrow I'll try to give it a good look over. So don't discount FAC yet. ceranthor 01:51, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
- FAC, lol. Not planning to go through that gaunlet for a long time. If ever. I meant GA, and yeah I know it's pretty bare but man the refs are scarse. Kinda comical, I google the reserves on it and there are plenty of references TO them but none ABOUT them. Ended up pulling them from a 1929 agricultural magazine. Guess that's what you get when you're stuck in the middle, hurr hurr. ResMar 02:09, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

I'm finally getting the hand of consistant article writing. Seamount looks just about ready for GAN, after about a week of work. Yay! ResMar 14:31, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- It does indeed! Consistency is the key to wikipedia editing - sometimes you have to will yourself to do things, but it is definitely worth it! ceranthor 17:10, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- So, you want to do Kilauea now? I'm finally out of things to do. ResMar 23:56, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
- I'd really like to finish up Armero tragedy. There's just a few more sources I need to add then it needs a good polishing and a look-over. I'm sure I could ask others to do that while we start Kilauea, though. I'll do a little research tomorrow, as obviously I have a limited knowledge of the volcano (compared to you). ;) ceranthor 01:16, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 July newsletter
We are half-way through our penultimate round, and nothing is yet certain. Pool A, currently led by Sasata (submissions) has ended up the more competitive, with three contestants ( Sasata (submissions), Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and TonyTheTiger (submissions)) scoring over 500 points already. Pool B is led by Casliber (submissions), who has also scored well over 500. The top two from each pool, as well as the next four highest scorers regardless of pool, will make it through to our final eight. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.
Planning has begun for the 2011 WikiCup, with open discussions concerning scoring and flags for next year's competition. Contributions to those discussions would be appreciated, especially concerning the flags, as next year's signups cannot begin until the flag issue has been resolved. Signups will hopefully open at some point in this round, with discussion about possible changing in the scoring/process opening some time afterwards.
Earlier this round, we said goodbye to Hunter Kahn (submissions), who has bowed out to spend more time on the book he is authoring with his wife. We wish him all the best. In other news, the start of this round also saw some WikiCup awards sent out by Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions). We appreciate his enthusiasm, and contestants are of course welcome to award each other prizes as they see fit, but rest assured that we will be sending out "official" awards at the end of the competition. Bothering you again
This time I want to ask if you think that Types of volcanic eruptions is on the right track. Other then that, "hello" :) ResMar 02:40, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
- Looks a lot better than before, obviously. Maybe you could cut down on the images for now. You don't know how long the article will turn out to be.
But man, you're on a roll! ;) ceranthor 02:47, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
- Two images per section is perfect I think, one is of the overall eruptive diagram and one is a photo. I'm thinking of making a template like {{Hawaiian volcanism}} to link togethor the different types of volcanic eruptions. ResMar 14:48, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
- Okay. I guess it's your preference. You may want to mention explosive and effusive eruptions in their somewhere. ceranthor 15:24, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

My RFA
It's okay; it doesn't hurt me as much as it hurts the community. Basically all it tells me is that I have zero chance of passing Rfa in the future, because I was blocked two years ago and I have less than an arbitrary number of edits a month. Anyway, I'd be happy to work with you on an article. I'm currently working on college basketball articles (see Magnum Rolle) but I'll probably be back to earthquakes sometime in the future. ~EDDY (talk/contribs/editor review)~ 14:34, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
- Ah, I've brought up Armero tragedy from 6kb to 25kb. It's not been too fun, but it's making progress. So are things? It seems we haven't talked in ages. ceranthor 14:38, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
- WE may work on 1970 Ancash earthquake in the future with Carcharoth and maybe Awickert, two highly experienced and pleasant people I worked with on David A. Johnston. They made the experience very enjoyable and fun. ceranthor 14:53, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
- Ancash seems interesting. By the way, would you mind reviewing Rolle? I know there are a million GANs ahead of it, but I'm eager to get it to FA status. :) ~EDDY (talk/contribs/editor review)~ 01:15, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- Well, I can't guarantee the last part, but I'll try to look it over. ceranthor 01:56, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

- Aren't you a bit busy? :) Also, I've talked with Awickert via email, and he said that one of the reasons that he kinda stepped away for a awhile was cuz he wasn't getting to edit the articles he wanted to. I'm just saying that we shouldn't overwhelm him with review requests. ResMar 02:16, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- Very true. I think we planned on re-doing plate tectonics but he's been away. So, any interesting articles? ceranthor 02:22, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- My list just passed, that's interesting, but you're privy to that. Writing generic volcanic stuff is fun. Perhaps Volcanology? Hmm...oh, I wanted to talk to you about Eruption. Tusk stubbed it a short while ago (Top-importance, defenition-worthy, and best of all stub class! humbug.), but I really think that "Types of volcanic eruptions" fits better. What do you think? ResMar 02:26, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- I had been thinking of writing a general volcano thing. Maybe Decade Volcanoes or Volcano? ceranthor 02:28, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

- I don't really. Long articles are not fun to write sometimes. Unless they have a meaning to them, like Armero tragedy. We could always just write about specific volcanoes. ceranthor 02:36, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- I'm writing Types of volcanic eruptions, and I'm learning things. A lot of things, really. Makes me wish I wrote it a long time ago. But yeah, long articles are annoying sometimes. That's why I write them in small bursts. ResMar 02:39, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

ResMar 13:21, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
- I'll be unable to edit starting tomorrow, but I'd guess the end of August or the beginning of September it'll be at FAC. Don't worry, it's not really expansion at this point, so we can work on whatever else we decide on too. I'll be unable to edit until August 14ish, so you'll have to fend for yourself until then. I'll probably end up helping with whatever you choose, anyway. :) ceranthor 13:27, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

- Looks like just as I went to post it, I saw that someone else had done it for me! I think the images look good, though that one map is arguably a derivative, as Magicpiano stated at the FAC. You may want to contact someone with image expertise; those who come to mind include Elcobbola, Jappalang, and Awadewit. ceranthor 19:34, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, well those images have been removed from the article so the article won't have any problems. Instead, I added File:Mount Cayley volcanic field NASA.png. I am currently collecting information to expand and rewrite the Temagami greenstone belt and Mount Fee articles, but the data is on another computer that currently has fucked up internet so I can't make an easy copy and paste move to the article right now. - Hi WS. I was on vacation, and would be willing to help guide the article through FAC, but I'd prefer not to be listed as a co-nom or anything because truthfully I did minimal work. ceranthor 16:59, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
- No problems. I'd be more than happy to just get your assistance on the minor things such as images/spelling/grammar ect. Just leave the sources to me :) If you don't mind, I'm going to submit the article now with User:Bellhalla wiki-posthumously (probably wording this wrong) getting credit as well since he wrote much of the article. Hi Ceranthor, I saw you listed as GA mentor. I have not yet participated in this process on either side, and I am a bit afraid of making a fool out of myself. I got Twyfelfontein to DYK this weekend (which did, sadly, not result in a single edit to the page), and I would really appreciate feedback with respect to the following:
- How could this article be improved?
- Despite its shortness, do you see a chance for GA?
I'm not looking for a detailed review at this time, just for a brief "improve X" or "reword Y". Would be great if you could spend 10 minutes. Thanks in advance, Pgallert (talk) 14:33, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- I'll look over it as soon as possible. From a cursory look, it seems like the lead could be expanded, but the article itself looks good. ceranthor 15:23, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- Just reviewed. ceranthor 19:27, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- Just to let you know, I think I was able to further improve the article. Have listed it at GAN today. Thanks for the encouragement, --Pgallert (talk) 15:09, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- Just reviewed. ceranthor 19:27, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Hmmm...
Seamount at FAC. What do you think? I'm not sure if I should peer review it, start bothering copyeditors, leave it for later, or just leave it as be...ResMar 16:40, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- Never mind... ResMar 16:54, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- ResMar, I mean this in the best of ways, but you shouldn't be so eager to bring articles to FA. Quality is important, too, and by that I mean the quality of a featured article. Ten times out of ten I'd rather work over a long period to prepare for an FAC if that meant the article turned out better - and if it was easier on me in the end, hehehe. Take your time with these things; as you've told me, going through long FACs is not fun.
Anyway, the article looks quite good. I've promised to muster up whatever pathetic attempt at an image review I can for Black Tusk - which will probably take me hours - and I want to look over the above article, but I'd like to speak with you about what we want to work on. I'm looking forward to our collaboration, whatever it may be. ceranthor 19:00, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- One of the major sources in the article doesn't pass WP:RS, and rewriting around it would be a major pain. 'Tis the problem with that. I've swallowed the FA pill before, of course. It's not very tasty. Random fact: Medicines used to be made as bitter as possible with the assumption that bitter is better for you. ResMar 02:45, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
Re: Review?
Hi Meldshal42^WCeranthor,
Sure, I'll take a look at it. But I'm afraid these articles are so far outside my areas of expertise that if the article has any obvious potential problems I may have to decline to do a GA review. I simply wouldn't be qualified to do it properly (i.e. since the point of the GA process is to improve the article, just failing an article without giving specific problems and suggestions for improvement would entirely defeat the purpose). I've somewhat cherrypicked Mario's articles at GAN because an initial scan suggested a more thorough review of them would be unlikely to turn up any major issues that I wouldn't be able to concretely address. Anyways, I'll take a look at 1949 Ambato earthquake when I can and review it I feel I'm up to the task.
PS. We miss you over at the Shakespeare project. :-) --Xover (talk) 23:54, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- Alright, thanks either way. It's the thought that counts. And maybe I'll get myself active 'round there again, seeing as practically all of my contributions to the Bard and related articles were absolute junk. Maybe I'd be able to do something useful now. ceranthor 01:21, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- I had a quick look at the article, but as I feared it's a bit out of my league to review. The article as is looks mostly fine, but it's very short for an article on a natural disaster that killed 5000 people. Compare it with the article on the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Now, granted, one could hardly expect to find such a wealth of source material for the 1949 earthquake in Ambato as for a recent and much publicised event, but even a quick search on Google Books suggests there is actually more material that can be added. For instance, one of the first results that struck me was an “Annual report of the American Bible Society” that suggests “…half of the 1949 circulation [of their magazine, or possibly bibles] was a special order of Portions for the Ambato earthquake victims…”; which would be an excellent point to cover in the article to put it into context. A couple of the other books on the first result page also talk a bit about the rebuilding and such. All in all it looks to me like there is still quite a bit of source material that could be used to expand the article. However, as I mentioned above, I just simply know too little about this area to be qualified to review it properly. Sorry!
As for your contribution to the Shakespeare articles: Nonsense! There's no such thing as junk contributions; just differently useful contributions. :-)
There is such a lot of work to do on improving the Shakespeare-related articles, and so desperately few active editors, that I'm quite certain you can find something that matches your interest, knowledge, and available WikiTime. What immediately spring to mind are the articles on the individual sonnet articles—most of whom are barely even stubs—and articles on the various articles on individual characters from the plays. The articles on characters are a tiny bit more developed than the average sonnet article, but both sets of articles are mainly stubs and you can probably find decent sources to expand them without too much effort. For the sonnets you'll probably find a whole bunch of material in a critical edition (Arden or Oxford, typically) of the Sonnets in a single book. And for some contentious issues just having another voice weigh in on a discussion can be incredibly valuable in itself, even if you don't have the time or inclination to write a lot of article content yourself.
Anyways, I'm sorry I couldn't be more help with your earthquake article; but do let me know if I can help in any way in any area I'm actually qualified to hold an opinion on. Cheers, --Xover (talk) 01:51, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

DYK for 1949 Ambato earthquake
On 17 August 2010, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article 1949 Ambato earthquake, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check ) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Review: 1949 Ambato earthquake
Hi Ceranthor, I'll take a shot at reviewing this -- partly as returning a favour, though I will not be "nicer" than to anyone else, :) partly because I see some logic in the argument "if you place an article at GAN, consider reviewing one", and partly because I hope to get "mentor input" on reviewing as well.
I already have a question re: the reviewing process. This essay suggests the reviewer should if possible fix (minor) things in the nominated article rather than pointing them out, but I hardly ever see this done. You didn't do that, either -- What's the official stand on this, and what would you prefer? --Pgallert (talk) 11:26, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
- Update: The review will take me some time but I have identified a few things that could be fixed in the mean time: Talk:1949 Ambato earthquake/GA1 --Pgallert (talk) 17:32, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
- By that standard they mean that you go over the page and copyedit minor things, slight coding changes, etc. Larger stuff, like expansion and source work, are to be done by the editor. The reason for this is that the minor work takes a lot less effort fixing yourself then pointing it out on the GAN page. ResMar 19:43, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
- Super busy the next week, will be addressing your points as best as I can! ceranthor 23:23, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
- I've had a go at the initial list of things, one of them was a copy & paste error in the infobox, that was down to me anyway. Mikenorton (talk) 23:27, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks as usual Mike! ceranthor 23:36, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
- Done with the review. Some minor things could still be done on the article but overall it looks good. --Pgallert (talk) 15:50, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
- Pass — I believe the article fulfills all GA criteria and have therefore promoted it today. Congratulations! If you have any complaints on how I handled this, please let me know. --Pgallert (talk) 14:20, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

Re:FAC
Better, but not quite. Please see my further comments on the review page. Cheers, Nikkimaria (talk) 16:33, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
- I've done some editing for wording. Other than that, two more suggestions: first, I still think that "political rationality" could be better explained. Second, there's some repetition of material: within the lead, and between 1985 activity and later sections. Cheers, Nikkimaria (talk) 15:45, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
- Assume you mean that the content is similar in wording? I'm a bit confused. ceranthor 15:54, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
- Well, there is some of that, but there's also some straight content overlap - for example: the "Impact" subsection overlaps with later sections; compare the information given about hospitals in the first and third paragraphs of Relief efforts; compare the information about people dying before rescuers arrive in Impact and Relief efforts; compare the first paragraph of Aftermath to earlier sections. Nikkimaria (talk) 16:11, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
- I'm confused. Some of that information is deliberately repeated, but just a bit. I don't see any real overlap. ceranthor 22:53, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
- If it's deliberate, then that's your choice - I find it a bit too repetitious, but if you like it, so be it. Cheers, Nikkimaria (talk) 00:30, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

We say goodbye to the six who fell at the final hurdle. Geschichte (submissions) only just missed out on a place in the final eight. Resolute (submissions) was not far behind. Candlewicke (submissions) was awarded top points for in the news this round. Gary King (submissions) contributed a variety of did you know articles. Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions) said "I'm surprised to have survived so far into the competition", but was extactic to see Finland in the semi-finals. Arsenikk (submissions) did not score this round, but has scored highly in previous rounds. We also say goodbye to Ian Rose (submissions), who withdrew earlier this month after spending six weeks overseas. Anyone interested in this round's results can see them here and here. Thank you to Stone (submissions) for these.
Signups for next year's competition are now open. Planning is ongoing, with a key discussion about judges for next year open. Discussion about how next year's scoring will work is ongoing, and thoughts are more than welcome at Wikipedia talk:WikiCup/Scoring. Also, TonyTheTiger is compiling some information and statistics on the finalists here- the final eight are encouraged to add themselves to the list.
Our final eight will play it out for two months, after which we will know 2010's WikiCup winner, and a variety of prizes will be awarded. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Handy trick
The ScienceDirect urls are very useful, but at the same extremely crufty and an eyesore when editing the page. Here's a good trick for you: go to google and stick the title in. Thus, http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL&_udi=B6VCS-48B5B5D-9K&_user=10&_rdoc=1&_fmt=&_orig=search&_sort=d&view=c&_acct=C000050221&_version=1&_urlVersion=0&_userid=10&md5=8c7dc9cee15938823eddd77be34731f0 becomes http://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/037702739090067P . Better, right? :) ResMar 22:28, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Hey Cer, can you move Cleveland Volcano (Alaska) to Mount Cleveland (Alaska)? The current name is silly. Thanks, ResMar 16:45, 5 September 2010 (UTC)
- ResMar, anyone can move a page... I'll check it out. I'm a little confused as to why the featured picture of that volcano is not being used in that article. ceranthor 19:38, 5 September 2010 (UTC)
- True, but only if it was not moved once. If I'm right. --Chris.urs-o (talk) 20:59, 5 September 2010 (UTC)
- Because the existing article title is a redirect to the current one, and copy-pasting would be a violation of edit history preservation. So you need to delete the redirect and then move the article, something I'm not priveleged enough to do. As for the FP, I have a mind to use it in the Eruptive history section, but first I need to finish writing it :) ResMar 01:47, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

Getting UTC on your desktop
Hi Ceran. You asked me about UTC conversions. Well, I was looking at getting a desktop UTC clock (I've wanted one for a while), and found instructions for the gnome desktop here. Don't know if this applies to your OS (gnome is a Linux desktop), but thought I'd let you know. Awickert (talk) 04:23, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

- OK - no worries. It is just often useful to have around. Awickert (talk) 17:37, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
Congrats
:). Encouraging comments coming from Tony1 regarding Mauna Kea, so it will be nomed sometime in the near future, likely. Mount Cleveland (Alaska) is shipped off to GAN, and World's largest eruptions's FLC got restarted. So, busy busy, and worst of all school is coming! ;) ResMar 18:59, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
- Looks good. I still have Mount Redoubt on my to-do list (I got it to GA before its eruption began, and now needs cleanup) as well as 1949 Ambato earthquake. My school already started, and I'll be very short on time once it gets into gear (taking plenty of honors classes) :/. I'll swing by that FLC, but otherwise, looks like I'll be working on Kilauea. ceranthor 19:35, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
I'm getting 4 days off actually, cuz of the teachers contract: 1 day for us then 4 for Rosh Hannukah. ResMar 23:05, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
- I got off for Rosh Hashanah and the other High Holidays. So I'll be working on stuff the rest of today and tomorrow. ceranthor 23:42, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
- I'm thinking of GAing Axial Seamount actually. Just can't wrap my head around Kilauea :-( ResMar 20:40, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, well I'd like to get something done with a major volcano other than Nevado del Ruiz. We need some more coverage in that area. ceranthor 02:32, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

As threatened, a few questions for you:
- I notice that there's no indication of the financial cost of the earthquake, unless I missed it somewhere.
- Background
- "Other notable landmarks in the city include the Monumento a La Primera Imprenta, Museo de Ciencias Naturales,[7] and the Parque Juan Montalvo." The relevance of this is not immediately obvious to me.
- Since 1949, several major earthquakes have taken place ...". In Ecuador or elsewhere?
- "Closer to the Andes, intraplate earthquakes such as those in March 1987 pose a significant threat, as they can be much more powerful." Much more powerful than what?
- "These earthquakes are usually associated with landslides, subsidence, and even liquefaction." Which earthquakes? Intraplate ones?
- "This would explain why there are northwest-southeast and northeast-southwest-trending faults in the region ..." Not sure why you've used "would explain" here, as it implies an element of doubt. Does it explain it or not? And what exactly does the "this" that starts off the sentence refer back to?
- Damage and casualties
- "When the main shock hit (its epicenter was southeast of Ambato), Ambato's main cathedral and military barracks collapsed (in the cathedral scores of young girls preparing for their communions were killed), as did most of the city's buildings." This doesn't really work, and the two parenthetical comments look a bit awkward. Why not turn the second of them into a footnote? Also, "main" cathedral implies that there were other cathedrals, were there?
- "As far as Quito and Quayaquil, shaking up to intensity IV was felt." How far away is that?
- Relief efforts
- "The mayor of Miami along with 7 other politicians began a fund-raising campaign for medicinal needs and clothing, and dropped 152 pounds of Rexall drugs." So the mayor dropped the drugs?
- "A fund-raising effort collected 250,000 Ecuadorian sucres". Was this an international or a national fund-raiser?
- "Sick victims were quarantined to the city." Does this mean inside the city, i.e., they weren't allowed to leave the city?
- Aftermath
- "The earthquake's impact on Ambato and Pelileo was tremendous". I don't doubt it was, was if you want to use a term like that it's best to quote and cite it.
- "The once charming city of Ambato ...". Similarly here, in whose opinion was Ambato "charming"?
- "In the days following the earthquakes, aftershocks continually occurred." Is "continually" right? There was never an instant without an aftershock? Is what's really meant here "repeated aftershocks"?
- "Torrential rains added to the effect." Added to the effect of what?

WikiCup 2010 September newsletter
We are half-way through our final round, entering the home straight. TonyTheTiger (submissions) leads at the time of writing with 1180 points, immediately followed by Sasata (submissions) with 1175 points. Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) closely follows in third place with 1100 points. For those who are interested, data about the finalists has been compiled at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/finalists, while a list of content submitted by all WikiCup contestants prior to this round has been compiled at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Submissions. As ever, anything contestants worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.
Despite controversy, the WikiCup remains open. Signups for next year's competition are more than welcome, and suggestions for how next year's competition will work are appreciated at Wikipedia talk:WikiCup/Scoring. More general comments and discussions should be directed at the WikiCup talk page. One month remains in the 2010 WikiCup, after which we will know our champion. Good luck everyone! WikiCup 2010 October newsletter
The 2010 WikiCup is over! It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. A full list (which has yet to be updated to reflect the scores in the final round) can be found here. Perhaps more importantly, we have our winner! The 2010 WikiCup champion is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), with an unbelievable 4220 points in the final round. Second place goes to TonyTheTiger (submissions), with 2260, and third to Casliber (submissions), with 560. Congratulations to our other four finalists – White Shadows (submissions), William S. Saturn (submissions), Staxringold (submissions) and ThinkBlue (submissions). Also, congratulations to Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.
Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. Winning the featured list prize is Staxringold (submissions), for six featured lists in round 1. Winning the picture and sound award is Jujutacular (submissions), for four featured pictures in round 3. Winning the topic award is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for forty-seven articles in various good topics in round 5. Winning the "did you know" award is TonyTheTiger (submissions), for over one hundred did you knows is round 5. Finally, winning the in the news award is Candlewicke (submissions), for nineteen articles in the news in round three.
The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Wikipedia itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Well done and thank you to everyone involved – the Cup has been a pleasure to run, and we, as judges, have been proud to be a part of it. We hope that next year, however the Cup is working, and whoever is running it, it will be back, stronger and more popular than ever. Until then, goodbye and happy editing! Main page apperance
Hello! This is a note to let the main editors of this article know that it will be appearing as the main page featured article on November 13, 2010. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/November 13, 2010. If you think that it is necessary to change the main date, you can request it with the featured article director, Raul654 (talk · contribs). If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page so Wikipedia doesn't look bad. :D Thanks! The Armero tragedy was the major consequence of the November 13, 1985, eruption of Nevado del Ruiz in Tolima, Colombia. After 69 years of quiet the eruption caught nearby towns unaware, even though the government had received warnings to evacuate the area from multiple volcanological organizations when volcanic activity had been detected in September 1985. As pyroclastic flows erupted from the volcano's crater, they melted the mountain's glaciers, sending four enormous lahars (volcanically induced mudslides, landslides, and debris flows) down its slopes at 60 kilometers (37 mi) per hour. The lahars picked up speed in gullies and coursed into the six major rivers at the base of the volcano; they engulfed the town of Armero, killing more than 20,000 of its almost 29,000 inhabitants. Photographs of the lahars and the impact of the disaster captured attention worldwide and led to controversy over the degree to which the Colombian government was responsible for the disaster. Premature block message
A question I have had for a long time is that "test4" says you will be blocked the next time you vandalize. "test5", the next level up, gives a block message which (for me) is not really valid. Not sure what to leave in this "in between" case. Another level 4 doesn't seem to make sense, but a level 5 jumps the gun. Leaving nothing leaves no clue to the admin investigating the request.
So what should I leave on the user's site after s/he has exceeded his level 4 (test4) message? Thanks. Student7 (talk) 20:16, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
- Perhaps an original, non-templated message warning them that they will be blocked. It seems in this case the user wasn't blocked, but I don't think at that point it's necessary to inform them that they're about to be blocked. Best, ceranthor 04:06, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2011 WikiCup!
Hello, happy new year and welcome to the 2011 WikiCup! Your submissions' page can be found here and instructions of how to update the page can be found here and on the submissions' page itself. From the submissions' page, a bot will update the main scoresheet. Our rules have been very slightly updated from last year; the full rules can be found here. Please remember that you can only receive points for content on which you have done significant work in 2011; nominations of work from last year and "drive-by" nominations will not be awarded points. Signups are going to remain open through January, so if you know of anyone who would like to take part, please direct them to Wikipedia:WikiCup/2011 signups. The judges can be contacted on the WikiCup talk page, on their respective talk pages, or by email. Other than that, we will be in contact at the end of every month with the newsletter. Invitation to join WikiProject United States
--Kumioko (talk) 04:12, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
I've started taking a look at this, as you asked, and I've got a few questions. I haven't finished yet, probably tomorrow, but this is what I've noticed so far, more to follow later:
- Lead
- I can't understand the lead image caption: "Mount Thielsen from Diamond Lake with its eroded crater". Whose eroded crater are we talking about? The lake's or the mountain's? Is the lake anything to do with the mountain (e.g., a volcanic crater), or does it just happen to be close by?
- History"
- "Apart from study, Thielsen and the rest of the Crater Lake area features heavily into nineteenth and early twentieth century exploration." I have no idea what that's trying to say.
- "Nye recalled an expedition of gold prospectors where they passed a lake of deep blue color." I can't quite make sense of that either.
- "In late 1865 two hunters ventured upon the lake and their sighting became pervasive." What on Earth does that mean? This whole section needs some serious work.
- Ecology
- "Above the timberline whitebark pine predominates." If there are whitebark pine, then in what sense is it a timberline? Incidentally, the Whitebark Pine article tends to use that capitalisation, although admittedly not consistently; sometimes it's Whitebark pine. I've raised a question on that article's talk page.
Malleus Fatuorum 01:00, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

DYK for Calabozos
Hello! Your submission of Calabozos at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Nice article, although it's still a bit thin on details. It's not a DYK requirement, but it sure would be nice if you could add an Infobox mountain and some section headings (e.g., "Geographical setting", "Geology", "Eruptive history", "See also", "External links"). In any case, the article text needs to be tweaked so that it supports the hook with an inline citation. Cheers, DiverDave (talk) 11:34, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 January newsletter
We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions), who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by Hurricanehink (submissions), with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1, Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!
A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round two is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. I understand your decline of speedy deletion here but please removed versions leading up to the current stub. They are very close paraphrased copies of http://www.alcorn.edu/president/default.aspx?id=6491--RadioFan (talk) 15:33, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
I've never seen an article go though GAR that quickly before! Nice work, Awickert (talk) 06:54, 16 February 2011 (UTC)
- It was a fast pass, wasn't it? But I'm glad that it wasn't a long, tiring process. And thanks! ceranthor 15:11, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
- This time around I did next to nothing; all it took was a read and a few touch-ups. I think you're mastering the good/featured content process (which is good, because it can be a huuuuge time sink, as you well know). Awickert (talk) 02:18, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
- I sure hope so. The time that's spent on some featured articles is scary! ceranthor 02:44, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah; that's a major reason why I've never submitted anything to FAC! Awickert (talk) 02:46, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
- It's a tiring process, but it's well worth it to produce an article of that quality. That being said, there are plenty of authors who write high-quality articles but don't send them to FAC, and that's fine, too. ceranthor 21:08, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
- WP:MOS keeps me from ever being the primary on anything, as it is tiresome and is focused on more than content. That being said, FA's are cool, and in a fun group (thinking David A. Johnston) are a blast. Awickert (talk) 03:01, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
- I just started an article on the Galeras tragedy, which is even more fascinating than I previously thought. I would love bringing it up to FA with you and possibly Carcharoth. :) ceranthor 16:07, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

I admit it. I have commitment problems. I'm here today, gone for a month tomorrow. Boo. Anyway, that makes me very iffy about taking cold fire to FAC. It certainly looks near ready, but I have the funny feeling that's telling me I won't see the thing finished before my interests wane again.
So, I'll need a conom. Just to help with it. Wanna help? I'll give you conom cred...=) (This is after I clear that last thing with Aw of course). ResMar 04:33, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
- A co-nom for something I didn't work on? How about I just help with the article as if I'm a co-nom, despite the fact that I'm not a co-nom? ;) ceranthor 19:55, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
- Hey, I'm okay with that too =) ResMar 16:04, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Certainly the author is new to the ways of Wikiedia, but in answer to your nomination comments, I just added mutiple WP:RS to the article. The Frontier Boys in now looking better... enough independent secondary sources to push at WP:GNG and WP:NF... not too bad for an indie film that only just had its premiere. - You're absolutely right. I think you've done (once again) a wonderful job rescuing this article and I'll withdraw the AFD asap. Excellent work. ;) ceranthor 19:56, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
