WikiCup 2021 July newsletter

The third round of the 2021 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 294 points, and our top six scorers all had over 600 points. They were:

• The Rambling Man, with 1825 points from 3 featured articles, 44 featured article reviews, 14 good articles, 30 good article reviews and 10 DYKs. In addition, he completed a 34-article good topic on the EFL Championship play-offs.
• Epicgenius, a New York specialist, with 1083 points from 2 featured article reviews, 18 good articles, 30 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
• Bloom6132, with 869 points from 11 DYKs, all with bonus points, and 54 "In the news" items, mostly covering people who had recently died.
• Gog the Mild, with 817 points from 3 featured articles on historic battles in Europe, 5 featured article reviews and 3 good articles.
• Hog Farm, with 659 points from 2 featured articles and 2 good articles on American Civil War battles, 18 featured article reviews, 2 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 4 DYKs.
• BennyOnTheLoose, a snooker specialist and new to the Cup, with 647 points from a featured article, 2 featured article reviews, 6 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 3 DYKs.

In round three, contestants achieved 19 featured articles, 7 featured lists, 106 featured article reviews, 72 good articles, 1 good topic, 62 good article reviews, 165 DYKs and 96 ITN items. We enter the fourth round with scores reset to zero; any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (one contestant in round 3 lost out because of this). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

Flower improvements

Hi Casliber, I've been improving Flower for WP:TCC and have just finished a section on the flower's importance to plant taxonomy. Is this the kind of thing you had in mind when you commented on the original submission? I've also added a section on the etymology, fertilization, fruit and seed development, and seed dispersal, as well as rewrote pollination. I was going to ask you later because I still have to rewrite the morphology, symbolism and in culture sections, but are there any other sections you think are needed? My dissertation will look at the process of collaborative knowledge production on the Israel-Palestine conflict, and the effect it has on bias in the articles. FAC mentorship

Hello:

My work on the article osteogenesis imperfecta is drawing to a close. All that remains to be done to meet the issues brought up in its last review is to add a section on genetic screening for the condition. WP:FAC states that editors should seek a mentor before they seek promotion to FA. I was thinking of just aiming for another GA, but perhaps I need a challenge. Seeing as you're a physician, would you be interested in helping see this article become an FA? FYI, I have the condition, and donated my own X-rays to the article. Hi @Psiĥedelisto: I have a few things going on but it is good to see more medical articles improved (this is a bit far removed from my specialty however.). GA has functioned like a Peer Review and good springboard for FAC. I strongly recommend it. I am a bit busy right now but should have more time after saturday. Hey, thanks for your reply. So, you are saying, that GA is a good first step for FA. I thought that as this article already received a peer review in 2006, leading to the creation of Talk:Osteogenesis imperfecta/to do, which I've used to guide my work, another peer review isn't necessary. However, the text of the page is also now significantly different than it was in 2006 (in which year I was age 12), although it wasn't too far removed when I began editing it earlier this month. I suppose that this is worthwhile advice, and if you feel that I should first try to get it GA certified, before seeking FA, despite the 2006 peer review, I am happy to do so, and then re-assess whether you wish to offer mentorship if it is GA certified. As far as GA standards go, it's basically already there except for a few problematically formatted citations which I'm going to fix. WikiCup 2021 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants, The Rambling Man and Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are Gog the Mild, Lee Vilenski, BennyOnTheLoose, Amakuru and Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles. Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For other contestants, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

Characteristics of Proteales

Maybe the hardest thing about getting the etymology lists (see my user page) through FLC was that, when a reviewer asked for something different from what was in the previous lists, I usually didn't know if it was something previous reviewers had opinions on or not, so I didn't know if I should go back and ask them. So, I'm thinking of starting my new list series (it focuses on characteristics common within particular plant orders) by looking at Proteales, Poales, etc. ... these are more likely to attract comments right away from plants people. But I wouldn't want to tackle Proteales at a time when you're busy, because I know you'll be likely to have comments ... is this a good time to work on that list? - Dank (push to talk) 17:11, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

"Quite a few missing sections: transportation or general infrastructure, local government, culture/events, notable people, healthcare. While some of these are covered, they need to be given separate sections or subsections." - It cannot have a transportation section or a healthcare section.

" Some sections are a bit too promotional to be truly neutral." Only two sentences were pointed out as sounding promotional.

"The last sentence is a bit promotional" - The last sentence of the lead only summarizes what the article already has.

"The snowmobile accident and its memorial are not notable" - That shouldn't matter. Not everything in the article needs to meet the GNG. The golf course and other memorials certainly aren't notable by themselves, but the reviewer made no mention of those.

"Geography" - It is the same as the Kingsley, Iowa article which is you approved as a GA.

"Organization listings should have descriptions and better sources" What better sources?

"contains an area that has plants and flowers that are native to the area": how is this notable?" - Same issue as the snowmobile accident and its memorial.

""summer of 2017" should be replaced with the month per MOS:SEASON" - It wasn't just one month.

"Ref 3 seems to be an advertisement and is missing the page number" - It isn't an advertisement.

"Ref 4 needs a publisher" - The book mentions no publishers and it is a full view on Google Books.

"Ref 8 needs a publisher" - Why does an official city website need a publisher?

RfA 2021 review update

Thanks so much for participating in Phase 1 of the RfA 2021 review. 8 out of the 21 issues discussed were found to have consensus. Thanks to our closers of Phase 1, Primefac and Wugapodes.

The following had consensus support of participating editors:

1. Corrosive RfA atmosphere

   The atmosphere at RfA is deeply unpleasant. This makes it so fewer candidates wish to run and also means that some members of our community don't comment/vote.

2. Level of scrutiny

   Many editors believe it would be unpleasant to have so much attention focused on them. This includes being indirectly a part of watchlists and editors going through your edit history with the chance that some event, possibly a relatively trivial event, becomes the focus of editor discussion for up to a week.

3. Standards needed to pass keep rising

   It used to be far easier to pass RfA however the standards necessary to pass have continued to rise such that only "perfect" candidates will pass now.

4. Too few candidates

   There are too few candidates. This not only limits the number of new admin we get but also makes it harder to identify other RfA issues because we have such a small sample size.

5. "No need for the tools" is a poor reason as we can find work for new admins

The following issues had a rough consensus of support from editors:

6. Lifetime tenure (high stakes atmosphere)
   Because RfA carries with it lifetime tenure, granting any given editor sysop feels incredibly important. This creates a risk adverse and high stakes atmosphere.
7. Admin permissions and unbundling
   There is a large gap between the permissions an editor can obtain and the admin toolset. This brings increased scrutiny for RFA candidates, as editors evaluate their feasibility in lots of areas.
8. RfA should not be the only road to adminship
   Right now, RfA is the only way we can get new admins, but it doesn't have to be.

Please consider joining the brainstorming which will last for the next 1-2 weeks. This will be followed by Phase 2, a 30 day discussion to consider solutions to the problems identified in Phase 1.

WikiProject Psychology

Hi there, Cas Liber. I'm part of a group of psychologists, psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, and neuroscientists who are interested in re-activating Wikiproject Psychology and improving the psychology pages, particularly those pertaining to psychodynamic psychology, which does not always get balanced treatment on Wikipedia. We are interested in a multi-disciplinary, integrative approach to psychology, not in trying to whitewash controversies or engage in hagiography of Freud, but we would like to see a clearer, more accurate representation of his important contributions, including pioneering insight-oriented psychotherapy and describing defense mechanisms like denial (which has become a real problem in the domain of public health, interfering with vaccination, etc., and should be talked about openly on Wikipedia!). We would also be able to contribute to creating a fairer, more nuanced, but also clear-eyed account of the field's long history of methodological failings and its marginalized status, which are more complex than the misleading and activist accusation of "pseudoscience." Perhaps you could help us navigate some of the anti-Freudian activism on pages like "Freud" and "Psychoanalysis," where gross violations like sockpuppetry have been an issue. For example, this user Polisher of Cobwebs, who also edits under the name Freeknowledgecreator and possibly Skoojal, has written a great deal of the Freud page, engaged in edit wars to defend his/her idea that only a negative account of Freud is accurate, and he/she appears to still be active there. Seabird

Hi, I have really appreciated your great work on the Kererū article. This has led me to ask whether you have interest and capacity to help improve the Seabird article that was recently delisted from FA status. I am not a topic expert, but New Zealand is sometimes said to be the "seabird capital of the world", and as a New Zealander, I have an interest in seabirds. I am currently working to improve Hutton's shearwater, as one example,and other articles associated with Kaikōura - a "hot spot" for seabirds in New Zealand. Okay, here's a sticking point...could you find a reliable source with a definition for what a seabird is, and what is and isn't a seabird.....this stonkered me while trying to save the article...Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 17:28, 31 October 2021 (UTC)

The most robust and authoritative definition I have found so far is from Bird Conservation International (2012) - see page 2 of the linked paper. I have added the bolding in the quote below.

We follow the taxonomy of BirdLife International (2010a) and define seabirds as species for which a large proportion of the total population rely on the marine environment for at least part of the year. With this circumscription, 346 species qualify, of which 282 meet a stricter definition (excluding ducks, loons, etc.) used in some earlier reviews (e.g. Croxall et al. 1984). We subdivided seabirds into three groups. Pelagic seabirds are those that primarily use marine pelagic deep water (sea above open ocean, typically >200 m in depth) and/or marine neritic pelagic continental shelf water (sea above continental shelf or around near-shore oceanic islands, typically <200 m in depth) excluding species that may occasionally use these habitats, but that are more typical of coastal inshore waters. Coastal seabirds (year-round) are those that primarily use coastal inshore water (sea along coasts, typically <8 km from the shoreline) throughout the year, excluding species that may occasionally use this habitat, but do not do so typically. Coastal seabirds (nonbreeding season) are those that primarily use coastal inshore water during the non-breeding season, excluding species that may occasionally use this habitat but do not do so typically.

A simpler and shorter definition is: A seabird can be defined as a bird that makes its living primarily from the ocean, beyond the intertidal or surf zone.

Perhaps the most useful definition I found was from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, US Dept of Commerce, quoted here:

Generally speaking, seabirds are birds that are adapted for life in a marine environment. While these adaptations can be exhibited in a variety of different ways, they’re often attributed to their behavior and physiology. There are many different groups of birds that use saltwater habitats but aren’t considered true seabirds. They include loons, grebes, sea ducks, herons, and shorebirds (except for two phalarope species that spend their winters in the open ocean). The groups that are usually considered true seabirds are “tubenoses”: shearwaters, petrels, storm-petrels, and albatrosses. The name “tubenose” refers to the tubular structures on the bills of these birds that cover the nostrils. These birds have well-developed glands near these bill tubes that allow them to consume seawater and then excrete salt from the solution. That means these birds will not need to drink or even see freshwater for their entire lives. Penguins, skuas, gulls, terns, alcids, boobies, tropicbirds, frigatebirds, and skimmers are also considered seabirds. However, not all species under those groups depend on the ocean for their entire life cycle.

WikiCup 2021 November newsletter

The WikiCup is over for another year and the finalists can relax! Our Champion this year is The Rambling Man (submissions), who amassed over 5000 points in the final round, achieving 8 featured articles and almost 500 reviews. Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. How many good faith editors have you personally chased of Wikipedia to create your pathetic little imaginary fiefdom Beeblebrox?
