Holocaust Article - Section WWII

Good morning Carole,

I just saw today your message - I am so slow with technology (I don't know how to use a cell phone) !

You wrote: "I have no idea what you mean about me removing citation information."

Carole, I put 2 sentences, below “WWII”, which nobody removed, explaining correct link between WWII, a context, and Holocaust. Then, I found the citation by Doris Bergen, that I thought it was good to add as per wiki regulations.

I added Bergen’s citation, without using template, as I was not sure how to do it (sometimes, I could figure it out!). 

Then, Carole, you removed my 2 sentences about link between Holocaust and WWII and the citation, because I didn’t put them in template.

I would have appreciated it if you would have kept the 2 sentences and put the citation in correct template.

I still think that the my addition with reliable source is important. Can you please, reconsider and add them back with using template for citation. I am now reading Longerich who also noticed the relationship between WWII and Holocaust.

I am really really trying hard to learn, improve, and listen to suggestions. My goal is to improve wiki with collaboration so wiki is good for everybody!

I have been considered very good at presenting the Holocaust, in an encyclopedic manner, so the public (I gave lectures) and students could understand the: what, who, where, why and when (I add the how ;-)

My name is Edgardo [you can just call me Ed], and I translated the Barrio puerto article, just for the purpose of getting the article ready for an upcoming edit-a-thon, next Friday (June 16th). I did this, as a way to detect possible editing conflicts.

Hi Ed,

I would be happy to help out, let me know how I can help. I had a hard time finding sources in English - or ones in Spanish that were easy enough for me to use translate.google.com / figure it out based upon what I can remember of Spanish, etc. So it would be good to get your input on the article.

Regarding sources, perhaps some of this will help:

• There are also books at this google books query - and the citations can be formatted by copying the url to http://reftag.appspot.com/ and it will format the citations first in fields and then in reference.
• Perhaps more content from this journal article (already used once in the article and can be used for subsequent used by it's ref name. Just type <ref name="ARQ" /> for the citation).
• As a side note, often articles from tourism sites have a promotional tone, so it's good to watch out that doesn't care over to the article.

I just now read messages by Carole and Eadgylt (I think), and I am truly sorry. But I am trying hard. I also thought to share with you my research, as I am planning to edit more:

France, mentioned in the article, was and is a transcontinental country, which, during WWII included mainland France or the Metropole, and France d’outre-mer (overseas) which included the 91, 92, 93, 94 departments in French Algeria, an integral part of the French republic, and the two French protectorate of Morocco and Tunisia; according to Kaspi there were 700,000 Jews living there (300,000 in mainland France and 400,000 in French North Africa). In his book Himmler A Life, Longerich writes that in December 1942, Himmler discussed with Hitler the destruction of 600-700.000 Jews of France: “… there are currently at least 1.5 million deadly enemies of the Axis living … in the previously part of France, namely 600,000-700,000 Jews… ‘The Fuhrer gave orders that the Jews and other enemies in France should be arrested and deported. A successor to the Madagascar project In his note for Himmler Eichmann wrote that this project would encompass ‘a total of some 5.8 million Jews’, … four million …Madagascar project. Hi Juggab, I copied that info from Genetics of Ancient Egypt to DNA history of Egypt with this edit.

There is a section regarding ancient DNA already, it seems like it is duplicative and it's better to have the greater context of ancient and modern DNA, per the last sentence of that section. In addition, this article is already well-cited and has many links to it... so it is more likely that it will be read by people looking for information about the subject.

Unfortunately, I had to revert your edit. The material added re: DNA is actually not supported in the cited reference (from 1982, no less). The majority of DNA evidence supports a local, rather than a Subsaharan origin for Egyptians.

Reading Creek

Carole, thank you for your help. I quite new at this, have only made a few articles. I've been adding articles for all rivers/streams in Bucks County, PA, my sources have been Place Name in Bucks County, 1955 by MacReynolds, GNIS from the USGS, and the PA Gazateer of Streams by PA DEP. This is such a small stream there wasn't much information other than Google. The gazateer did have some info, it was in there, I might add it back in. In the other articles, I got the info from them as primary source and would throw in some Google Maps stuff as an addition. I appreciate help from you experienced folks. One question, though. Since Reading Creek is a tributary of Arrowhead Spring Creek, which is a tributary of the West Branch Neshaminy, which is a tributary of the Neshaminy, and it's a tributary of the Delaware (ad nauseum), would the article not be correct as "Reading Creek (Arrowhead Spring Creek)", as opposed to "Reading Creek (West Branch Neshaminy Creek)"? When browsing the categories such as Rivers of Bucks County and of PA, I note that some are named by political regions, but, most are named by the distributary stream. I like the distributary stream better. Anyway, I'll have to check out your sources, might be able to use them in the future. Thanks, again. Hi Are1718, thanks for catching the difference between primary and secondary sources, and that secondary sources are preferred.

In general, your sources make sense. It would be better if there was something newer than 1955, but as long as you know any reliable source that is newer would take precedence if there's a difference, that's fine.

I couldn't find anything that said that Reading Creek was a tributary of Arrowhead Spring Creek. Did you, by chance, read the source that said that Reading Creek is a tributary of West Branch Neshaminy Creek? It seems to me that I found it in other sources and can look for those if you'd like. That is why I changed the article name.

There's no right or wrong on categories by political area vs. distributary stream - whatever is applicable should be used. But if you say that it's a river in a county of Pennsylvania, the category for rivers in Pennsylvania isn't needed.

I did have a question, though, about it being listed as a tributary of the Delaware -- as I saw that the Reading Creek is part of the Cross(hitch??)-Neshaminy watershed... so it's a bit removed. But, I don't know if I'm right or not about categorization in that case. As an aside to that point, categories should generally not be applied unless there is cited content within the article that states the connection. Perhaps we can ask a question at the Delaware River article about this -- not as many people read Category talk. We also should probably summarize some of this on the article talk page. I'll take care of it.

So, I was wondering about Reading Creek being a tributary of Arrowhead or West Branch. I got from Google that Arrowhead is the west branch as well as the main branch, so, I browsed every link in the GeoHack, some didn't address it at all, some named the two branches and not the main, some labeled the main Arrowhead, some Reading. So, it's located about 15 minutes from my work so I drove there. The main branch is Reading. I figure the locals and the highway department know better than the cartographers. I know, that's original research, so I won't use it directly, but it helped to determine who's right. Referring to my article format, I used the article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Rivers as a basis as well as articles of rivers by others as examples. That's why I have lists, etc. Also, in the case of using maps as sources I refer to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Using_maps_and_similar_sources_in_Wikipedia_articles. I don't read anything into the map that's not already there such as using google distance calculator to calculate the river's length, I guess that would be original research, but, using the obvious data that's there. Sort of like if I read in a book or an article 'Reading Creek is here, and here, and in this township, etc.", seems to me like the map is sorta a graphical representation of the creek is 'here, and there, and in this place'. But, now I realize that I need to refer to many maps to verify what I may not be able to otherwise, many are incorrect. I'm glad you found the 'Water Sources' site as my searches had not found it. Thanks for that. On the subject of categories, I'll concede the landforms category, others had put streams there so I followed suit, I guess rivers and streams are 'waterforms' whereas landforms are mountains, valleys, and so forth. As far as River of Pennsylvania, I just now thought about it. the category 'Rivers of Pennsylvania' has many links way before my time, so, that's why I had included it, 'write by example, as it were. I'm not sure if I should leave that alone or not. My articles include a link to the main article 'Lists of Rivers of Pennsylvania', so adding the category I guess would be redundant. There's even a category 'Rivers of the U.S. But anyway, the MacReynolds book I referred to earlier has many mountains, rivers (creeks), and place names in it that have no articles. I would like to put up articles about them in an historical perspective as many don't have now, and including current condition as compared to historical. It was easier to do one type at a time, rivers, mountains, etc. Not trying to be argumentative, just asking. Thanks. I note that you included citation tags in the West Bank Neshaminy article. I deleted them and included two for each line item. Is this correct or would a single tag for the section be more appropriate, not sure how to do that? I answered the questions regarding Reading Creek at Talk:Reading Creek (West Branch Neshaminy Creek).

Regarding using one google maps citation for all the municipalities for West Branch Neshaminy Creek (Neshaminy Creek), I removed those citations. 1) You have a published source, which is much better. 2) If you're going to use google maps, you should really use a citation for each municipality and a point at which the creek flows through that area.

I added something to Talk:Arrowhead Spring Creek (Reading Creek) about the name change. I don't see a published source for this move - nor had I seen anything that said that Arrowhead was a tributary of Reading Creek.–CaroleHenson (talk) 04:54, 18 June 2017 (UTC)

Carole, I can definitely state that the article is not neutral, as per my experience with people who have manipulated quotations to promote a certain perspective on history of the Holocaust.

I did write a review of an anti-Israel textbook in the school of my children, and the school had to remove the book - it was not easy!

But not now I am older, and cannot learn the technology of Wiki.

I am taking a break from wiki, and therefore not reading more messages. I am writing draft of responses to the Holocaust after 1939 (Evian, Kindertransport…), before the war, and after the war (Varian Fry …). I am not ignoring you, but Wiki says that it’s good to take a break.

Simon, I thank you from all my heart for your patient mentorship. I decided to end it yesterday, because you, Carol, Ealdgyth, and others who voluntarily have been formatting my sources, or commented on the pertinence of my editing have helped a lot, but I feel that, because of my old brain, technology will remain a challenge. I also know from my personal experience that I learn better by doing and improving with guidance and discussion from many different editors.

I thank you in advance for your patience, ollaboration, and letting me edit, without “biting” me. Wiki states that newcomers who are experts on the subject are a positive addition in editing.

In good faith, I started to edit in a thoughtful way, using source, and attentively reading your guidelines that I printed, and wiki material. I explained the editing in the summary and the Talk of the article.

I didn’t delete “North Africa” “as a matter of principle,” but after I had checked Longerich, where it does not appear. I also found out that Kershaw wrote almost the same sentence, like the one in the article, with the incorrect inclusion of “North Africa” in the 11 millions, in p. 35 of Niewyk’s book, The Holocaust. I remembered that, because I thought that Kershaw maybe confused. I also copied from Yad Vashem and didn’t put quotations marks. I noticed that sometimes, not in the case of the long paragraphs of Yad Vashem, after 20 yrs of Holocaust study, I know sentences of scholars, by heart!

I read in Wiki: After one changes a page, others who read it can choose whether or not to further edit. When editors do not reach agreement by editing, discussion on the associated talk pages continues the process toward consensus.

I welcome your understanding of my shortcomings, your good faith collaboration, and your objections. I will listen to all of them attentively, “try to understand why, respond politely and assume good faith.”

I sincerely apologize for saying that the article is not neutral and acknowledge the hard work of other editors; I should have explained that it was what my 1000s and members of the public, who came to my Holocaust lectures, told me. That’s why, upon my retirement, I decided to be involved and collaborate in improving it.

I will “take the time and effort to explain why I think my suggestion(s) might be preferable, and “resolve disputes calmly, through civil discussion and consensus-building on relevant discussion pages. Please remember that we are all here for more or less the same reason . … Wikipedia is not about winning

Hi Ealdgyth. I will be agin suggesting that Henia uses my talkpage as a central conduit, this stopping multiplte and unitentially disruptive postings. The mentorship issue is still relevant in my opinion. From my reading Henia wants a loose collaborative network. But this just causes multiple duplicate postings. I will again later today recommend that Henia uses my T/P as her postbox. I will then disseminate relevant info to colleagues who aare mentioned and or involved, as a single point of contact/clearing house for Henias input. I have pinged Diannaaa on a potential copyright issue so this is the kind of model I think would be the least disruptive, and logical. I don't know what to say, Henia Perlman. I don't like that you ignore advice and input. I don't find that to be a part of an intention to offer "good faith contributions". And, you seem to have a double-standard. It's ok to insult others, but you don't like "tone" that you're uncomfortable with.

I am happy to talk to you on talk pages of articles for content that is related to those articles. Content that is personal in nature, should not be on article talk pages. I have been trying to help you get away from the issues that have caused the warnings. Based upon your comments, I am getting that you are not really responsive to help, unless it's exactly the way that you want it.... which I believe is to let you go ahead and make whatever kind of edits you want and have others clean it up. My decision about 2 options

Because I am slow in making decision, I would like to discuss it with you first, the proposal of Rivertorch:

I agree not to edit the article The Holocaust directly for a predetermined interval (at least the remainder of this month), instead proposing all of my changes to Carole, who was kind to offer her help.

(Carole, I don't mind to always checking with you first, (or Ealdgyth: he didn't offer help, and I don't want to bother him), modifications in Holocaust article - sometimes, I am too impulsive!). 

I did put back my request not to block.

Henia Perlman, I am happy to help you. I can help format the information that you'd like to add and ensure that it is properly cited and meets guidelines. I recommend that once it's ready for the article, that we run it by the talk page. That is because, as Mathglot and others have said, it is a contentious article and we should ensure that the community is ok with the additions. (Not questioning you as a knowledgeable person about the Holocaust, but to ascertain the appropriateness for the overview article).

So, that would be a two-step process: 1) You and I working through the wording you'd like to add -- getting it wikipedia ready and 2) then post it on the talk page to ensure that it's good to add. How does that work?–CaroleHenson (talk) 01:54, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

Henia Perlman, Since there has been major work on the article to condense it - it is an overview article after all, and is still quite large, I recommend running it by the talk page first. For instance, it may be that the information is more appropriate in a sub-article.

As an FYI, articles are generally kept at 100,000 bytes or less. This one got up to 300,000 and was condensed by Ealdgyth down to 194,000 bytes, which is still quite long.

The proposals as alternatives to blocking were either to leave the article alone for awhile, or run additions by the talk page. So, I think we should do either one of those two.–CaroleHenson (talk) 02:32, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

Henia Perlman If Carole is willing to help you by working through the talk page, I think that's a very generous offer. I would probably be more conservative than that, but the important thing is to come to some agreement which is satisfactory, and which avoids the block, which you are, or were, very close to receiving.

In order for any agreement to work smoothly, I think at a very minimum you should have a basic command of talk page procedures and etiquette. I see that you are signing your posts now with four tildes (~~~~) so that's great! Keep it up; sometimes even seasoned editors forget that, so that's really good; you've got step one down pat.

One important thing on talk pages (also article pages) is being able to follow Wikilinks. Are you familiar with hyperlinks or Wikilinks? Whenever you see some words in blue (sometimes purple) text, that means you can click it to go to another page. Depending on how your browser and Wikipedia preferences are set up, you might be able to just hover the mouse over the link, to see a brief summary of the page at the link. This paragraph has three wikilinks, did you spot them?

Another thing you should have some familiarity with, are talk page procedures concerning conversation threading and indentation. Please have a look at Help:Using talk pages, especially the section Replying to an existing thread, and understand how to use colons (' : ') to indent your replies properly. This is really a prerequisite for most other things you would like to do here.

Meanwhile, some of the things Carole is talking about concerning article length are fairly advanced topics, and I also worry about your passion for the topic of The Holocaust getting you frustrated here. Part of the problem with the article "The Holocaust" is that there are too many editors and they all have opinions, and it's easy to get into disputes. This is a very, very tough area for a brand new editor to start at Wikipedia. Are you open to looking at some related topics that are shorter, easier to deal with, and not as fraught with issues as this one is? There are so many articles needing attention, I could point you to some of them that are really crying out for knowledgeable and committed editors like you. Mathglot (talk) 04:51, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

Henia, I am sorry, but I don't feel comfortable just posting the content after it's gone through a major rewrite by an experienced Wikipedia editor. I would hate to get into an area of content being reverted.

Mathglot has a really great way of breaking things down and I really think you should consider his/her offer. This is about learning to use Wikipedia. Once you get the hang of how things are done, and are able to make edits without having them reverted, you will be able to be more independent. Hi. I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well. If editing Wikipedia is causing you any stress or anxiety, I hope you'll consider taking a break and returning when you feel better. Your health is way more important than any Wikipedia article. In any event, whether you'd prefer to deal with it now or later, this is what the situation is:

In an attempt to keep you from getting blocked, I made a proposal at WP:ANI that you stop editing the article for a while and make suggestions on the talk page instead. This would be similar to the method often used at protected articles, where newer editors make "edit requests" rather than editing articles themselves. This approach would still allow you to contribute to the article, but not directly. Mathglot made a different proposal—that you avoid that article and its talk page entirely for a while, and go brush up on your Wikipedia editing skills at other, related articles.

Those are the two proposals on the table. You appear to be making a counter-proposal involving your continuing to edit the article and explaining each edit on the talk page. I don't believe that such an approach would be agreed to by the community, and I very much doubt that any further counter-proposals will be welcomed. I suggest that you pick one of the two proposals I just summarized above. If neither is acceptable to you, then your only remaining options are either continuing down the same road you've been traveling and finding yourself blocked or voluntarily ceasing all editing activity on Wikipedia. I think that either of those outcomes would be unfortunate, but the community is only going to spend so much time and effort on this. Whatever you decide, I wish you all the best. Our friend appears to be flailing about, seeking new helpers based upon their last responses, or something I do not quite understand. It may well be that our colleague is actually very impatient and requires immediate and favourable responses, based on subjective impressions of her helpers' usefulness to their current POV, perception of how WP operates or way our friend maybe wishes to shape the article. I have rarely if ever seen such collective goodwill shown to a new colleague on WP. I do think that our friend should now make their own way on WP. The useful bank of information that you, I and many others have provided should now be enough. The sheer volume of constructive advice given has been enormous. I would advise that we gently disengage-while still providing basic support on a case by case basis-and allow events to take their course. I truly hope that they take a positive course. Hi, I've been scrolling through the adoption section and your profile sounded interesting. I think you could be of great help.

There isn't much to say about me, but the bit that is, here it goes: 

I'm basically bringing my contribution to Wikipedia because I got overly curious one day and I've clicked that Edit button and things went out of control due to over excitement. I am at the moment preparing for admission to a PhD in fashion and I thought of channelling my topic on the contemporary costume of the Muslim woman aka, the modest fashion movement, and since I'm on it, I thought that researching and gathering the info from the internet would pair nicely with contributing to the knowledge basket, so here I am, taking two rabbits at a time. My research should contain info on Islam as a social movement, basically, why do Muslim women dress the way they do and which are the influences from various points of view, religious texts, social and economic contexts, practicability and cultural sensitivity. Ideally, while gathering all the right data, from the proper, verifiable sources, I should be able to create original content on the topic and educate others on what Muslim fashion is all about, on various educational platforms. Whether it is small or large, any input or help will be appreciated.

Hi Lisdip1, Yep, I reviewed the article and documented the reason for the change is in the edit summary, which can be seen in the history. If I can clarify anything, though, please let me know.

I am not sure why you added the {{BLP sources}} tag on the article. But, it's fairly well sourced, so I removed it. I did add a tag for notability, though. Please see WP:CREATIVE. I am not sure that there is sufficient notability, but perhaps you can add further information that speaks to the criteria under WP:CREATIVE.

As an FYI, you can automatically sign your talk postings by entering ~~~~ after you type your message. Then, like magic, when you save your message, it will add your name, links to your user and talk page, and date and time stamp. Help with AIG and edit requests

Hi Carole, hope you're well. I was wondering if you could help me out with a couple of questions. I submitted an edit request 3 months ago, but didn't anticipate that the queue would be so backlogged. Is there a way I can rescind the request so I can seek help more immediately? I have another extant request for another section, but by main concern here is that the information in the overview of the article is outdated, and of greater significance. I changed the subsidiaries. The information in the infobox and the intro will take awhile longer to check.

Hi Carole. I see you added a Template:Citation needed tag. Do you think there is a problem with those mileages to neighbouring towns in the first para? Hi Martinevans123, It's my practice to add citations to content. It seems strange that the distances are approximate. I assumed that they came from a published source somewhere. Since you're familiar with the area: I have been confused by the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal - does it still go through Newent? My mind kept swimming in a circular pattern about the various options to move forward and I so far haven't been able to get unstuck. I do want to get back to the article. Saw you left some CN tags, and I had a question about them. It seems redundant to cite the same page of the same source twice in one sentence. For example, the [1] ref in the following sentence covers both facts in the statement:

Led by Robert Culliford, the crew mutinied against Kidd and voted May as captain,[1] taking several small Spanish vessels in the Caribbean.[citation needed]

In a case like that, should both independent clauses have the same [1] citation, or should there be a single citation only, but placed at the end of the sentence? Or should that be two sentences, even if they use the same source?

Similar question: If two consecutive sentences are covered by the same citation reference, it seems redundant to repeat the same citation in both. Example:

They forced the ship’s cooper to sign their Articles by beating him and threatening to behead him with an axe.[3] Lyne burned the sloop and sailed for Guiana.[citation needed]

The same source applies to both sentences. Would each one get the same [3] reference? Or should they be combined into a single sentence, as with the former example?

I really don't want to have sentences reading like this:

They forced[3] the ship’s cooper[3] to sign their Articles[3] by beating him[3] and threatening to behead[3] him with an axe.[3]

I realize that's a difficulty of working with obscure topics, where there might not be multiple sources or the sources might largely repeat each other.

Hi TheLastBrunnenG,

I just added citation needed tags where the end of paragraphs ended without a source. If the citation extends to multiple sentences, you can just move the citation to the end of the place it applies. If it applies to three sentences in a row, for instance, put it at the end of the 3rd sentence.

I wasn't sure where a citation went if several subjects or sentences were clustered together, and I was probably inconsistent in usage. Hi Chrismcevoy, sure.

So if you're saying that you have published documents that are in the archive, you could use one of the WP:Citation templates, depending upon the type of document (book, magazine, etc.) and enter the information. You may have other documents, that are not published which then becomes a WP:Verifiability issue. Are you talking about published or unpublished documents?

Google...

Another problem with google books is the fact that it shows different pages to different countries - so just because someone can see it in the UK doesn't mean the same pages are available in the US. And one reason I'm very leery of google books searches is that ArbCom case I linked on my talk page to you a while back - the editor who got banned in that case was using google books to search for phrases and taking things totally out of context. It took a LONG time to get him banned for misusing sources and pushing his POV, and it was really draining. Ealdgyth - Talk 19:22, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

Ealdgyth I see your point from your Talk:The Holocaust posting here about the possibility of having a view to only some of the information. That's a really good point... and I avoid sources if I am not getting a clear picture of the content from the book because of hidden pages. And, will absolutely avoid sources if I don't there are hidden pages regarding the content I am looking for for the Jews escaping from Nazi Europe to Britain article.

I don't think I understand the issue about the page numbers. If you're saying that google books is not a true digital copy and for some reason the pagination is different in the UK vs. US (which I heard something about several years ago). But if it's because there is a difference in pagination between UK and US editions, that would still be an issue if I used a hard copy of the US edition of the book. Hmmm. So far, I am not using google books... I have been using news and web sites to this point, but I do have books in my list. If it's a google pagination issue (vs. UK / US edition pagination issue), I could go to the library and verify the page numbers of any content I choose to use.

Sitush, I hope you are doing well! I remember years ago you when you mentored me that you checked some of my citations from google books to ensure that the page numbers were correct. I have been trying to figure out, due to this latest post, if this is a google pagination issue (i.e., the page numbers in google books are not the same as the printed copies)... or if it's a US vs. UK book edition issue. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I often use google books even when I have the hard copy because it's easier to work with and so far, I haven't seen a difference in pagination, so I am thinking it might be a UK vs. US book edition issue.

Basically, what I'm trying to figure out is if I am using a google book, should I go to the library and check the page numbers.

I'm sorry Carole, I seem to have caused the confusion. It's not an issue about there being a difference in printed page numbers between the physical book and the image of the printed page from Google books - rather it's an issue with what page images Google Books will show in their "preview" view of a book. Google Books will only show a limited number of pages for any book that they are doing "previews" for, but exactly what images (and thus pages) are shown varies between countries. So if I'm in the US, Google Books may show me pages 30, 31, and 56 for a given book, but if I'm in the UK, I'd get 68, 69, and 101. Does that make sense? Ealdgyth - Talk 12:09, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

Ealdgyth, As an FYI and to close the loop on this conversation, I have run through my sources that aren't books and looking through Whitehall and the Jews for content for the article I'm working on. I get your point about the hidden pages - and addressed that above. Regarding the fact that previewed pages differ in the UK vs the US: if I went to the library and provided a citation without a url, there would still not be a way to verify the pages online. So, I'm moving ahead seeing what content I might be able to reap from that book... and will likely go to the library as well to see the entire book... as well as Bernard Wasserstein's Britain and the Jews of Europe, 1939-1945, which does not have preview.

I have been using google books for some time, and think that I am quite responsible in how I select which books to use due to the hidden pages issue. And, I have not seen a policy guideline against using google books. If there is one I am missing, though, that would be helpful to know.–CaroleHenson (talk) 21:44, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

privacy rights

Hello, Citation [1] is no longer linkable ... can't verify whether that information is true or not. Even a search of the herald website came up empty ... so all that should go. Citation [2] is also bunk ... can't be verified.

Dikinson's middle name is not published anywhere but personal information stuff, and should be removed - as well as the letters behind her name.

I left the MSc in this time, as that is actually out there ... but a person (even on wikipedia) deserves privacy rights.

CaroleHenson, The citations (previous [1] and [2]) were no longer linking to articles that were online available/verifiable, so I removed the associated content. The removal of the year of birth (also not public information) was completed by someone else. Someone after me has re-added some part of the 'early life' information with a new citation that is linkable/valid. I was just trying to keep information on the site = publicly-available information, that had been given directly to the press BY the individual it is about ... and, therefore, not a violation of this person's right to keep personal information personal.Kgs32 (talk) 23:05, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

Dear Carole, may I ask you for help in something I do not understand? there is a user that started posting message on my talk page about me using material from my website without giving the licence to Wikipedia. Aside that I did not know about that, she had already deleted that part, and since the article was fine even without the addition, I asked if the article could survive in that way, and she basically did not answer and posted again threatining me to block me if I was to continue to use such material. Sincerely I did not realize I was doing it, many info I have on my notebook and not always I remember what I posted on a blog months/years ago. Anyway at the second warning I thought better not to use my notes, and therefore I always searched for another source. In the case of Edith J. Goode, I found a good one, I took the info I needed, I did not copy but rephrased (aside for name of Organization and Position) and I launched the Copyvio Report that came out 24% = GREEN, with "Unlikely" so I thought I was fine. But now Diannaa posted again a 3rd warning, she said it's the final warning... she changed the Edith J. Goode article, now is 16% = GREEN = Unlikely, basically the same result as me, just a percentage lower. I sincerely don't know what to do. I'm afraid to do something cause I do not want to be blocked, but I really do not understand why Diannaa posted the 3rd warning... --Elisa.rolle (talk) 19:03, 17 July 2017 (UTC)

I am sorry to hear that there are copyvio / paraphrasing issues again. Diannaa is the queen of copyright issues. She knows her stuff. I see from your talk page history that there were several tags put on your page re: copyright issues. I recommend listening to what she has to say.

You likely remember that I worked on a number of your articles in early May, paraphrasing content and then requesting that the versions with copyright / close paraphrasing issues be hidden. At the time I mentioned that when using the copyvio detector, you need to check the "compare" feature for each source and check for text in red highlighting for concerns. Looking at the percentage isn't a fail-safe approach. Even then, you need to check the sources that couldn't be run through the copyvio detector, like pdf files, books, or other reasons why there wasn't a compare of source against the article.

In other words, the detector is only as good as the person viewing it and properly analyzing the results.–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:53, 17 July 2017 (UTC)

I know there is an image of Diane and Jerome on Commons, but we don't know if said images were first published in that Aleister Crowley book (in which case the copyright becomes tricksy....) reliable sources

I just figured out enough of the interface to see why my edits have not gone up, and noted your improvements. While I can't say that it makes my work of posting my exhibitions easier, I see the reasoning behind keeping things tidy.

I completely see your point on only listing my major publications. That said, I could not make much sense of what I would have needed to post instead to document my photo/journalist exhibitions: the only proofs that I have are the scanned articles, invitations, and letters from exhibitors.

James A. Palmer

Hi CaroleHenson, thank you so much for you edit/messaging me. The frustrating thing about james a. palmer is that although his stereographs are everywhere (https://digitalcollections.nypl.org/search/index?filters%5BnamePart_mtxt_s%5D%5B%5D=Palmer%2C%20J.%20A.&keywords=&layout=false) ,(https://www.loc.gov/item/2015650287/) there isnt much about him. Most of the info i have about him is from a book called Partners with the Sun: South Carolina Photographers, 1840-1940 by Harvey S. Teal. I was able to identify his first name using archive grid. CaroleHenson, Ok having reviewed the notability guidelines for people specifically for creative people, specifically 4d( is represented within the permanent collections of several notable galleries or museums) I am not sure why archives of J.A Palmer 's stereographs in the library of congress (https://www.loc.gov/resource/ppmsca.39587/) , Various collections under the nypl database including the shomburg center(https://digitalcollections.nypl.org/search/indexfilters%5Bdivision%5D=SCG&filters%5BnamePart_mtxt_s%5D%5B%5D=Palmer%2C+J.+A.&keywords=#) and a profile and several stereorgraphs in the collection of the International center of photography (https://www.icp.org/browse/archive/constituents/james-a-palmer?all/all/all/all/0) as well as the sources you have provided ( thanks btw) do not establish his notability. Hi Carole, the source for what you have just reversed is Reference 1 to some extent and mainly Reference 2, already there. [2]. I'm disappointed too that there isn't more to be found about him on the Net, but I think the page should remain for a while. Your version is not too bad if you don't want to change back to mine. The only factual thing I have against it is that it says the poem is published in the Bibliography. I think the poem is only mentioned as existing in the Bibliography and appeared in the edition I cited. The absence from the Welsh wiki is annoying, but common. Hi Carole, We are very pleased to communicate with you here and receive your encouraging messages. Many of the collecteurs, fun and galeriste are following the wikipedia page of artist Li Chevalier. Some contributors, by mistake, quote published articles from art critics, which seems to have promotional tone . However, the mistake has been corrected, page redited. Despite this effort, the main page of the artist carefully build up several years ago are entirely eliminated. • Carole, I was led here because an editor noted the COI edits in the Li Chevalier article. The Women artists article had stuff like this, "However, with different mental approaches, she drifts away from the stereotypes of oriental preciosity, which she transcends through mixture, texture, eclecticism and pathos; " removed--that content, it seems to me, is not encyclopedic, nor is it at all clear that Li Chevalier needs to be mentioned in that article--her article lacks secondary sources, was full of puffery, and fails to advance the argument that she needs to be mentioned in the larger article.
