Welcome

Billcasey905, welcome to Wikipedia! I saw some of your recent edits and new articles on Citadel football. I'd like to welcome you to check out Wikipedia:WikiProject College football, which is a resource for editing and collaborating on college football topics on Wikipedia. I also want to mention a few points of style regarding the season articles, e.g. 2010 The Citadel Bulldogs football team.

  • All scores, win-loss records, and year ranges on Wikipedia should be punctuated with an endash (–), not a hyphen (-). See: Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Dashes.
  • On the schedule tables, you only need to wikilink to each stadium and city once.
  • Use Template:Cfb link to avoid red links to nonexistent articles.
  • Don't add non-existent categories to articles unless you are planning to create and populate that new category in a timely fashion.

Take a look at edits I made to 1960 The Citadel Bulldogs football team and 2010 The Citadel Bulldogs football team and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for your contributions so far and happy editing. Jweiss11 (talk) 04:21, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

Categories

Hi Bill. I just wanted to drop a note about proper categorization for articles. The rule about categories is to use only the lowest possible subcategory for the article at the exclusion of any parent categories above it. For example, in this edit, you added the basketball article to (1) the basketball category itself, (2) the general athletic program category, and (3) the overall school category. This is redundant categorization, because there would be no need to have it in the overall school or general athletic categories if it's already in a sub-category of both, the basketball category. Think of categories as a tree, and articles should only be placed in the lowest hanging branches. Thanks! Jrcla2 (talk) 16:14, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

Got it, thanks! Billcasey905 (talk) 17:03, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
No problem, keep up the good work. Jrcla2 (talk) 19:43, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

2012 The Citadel Bulldogs football team

I just wanted to let you know that I took a look at your recently created article 2012 The Citadel Bulldogs football team-- However, I think the article seems to contain a few errors: the article currently does not contain any references. As a new article, the most important thing is to find reliable references for all existing information.Jipinghe (talk) 19:31, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Basketball CPOYs

Saw where you signed on to create Regan Truesdale - great! I was wondering if you'd also like to take a shot at Rodney McKeever, the only other Citadel men's basketball CPOY? Jrcla2 (talk) 20:46, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Absolutely, might be a little bit before I have them both live, but I'll take that one too. Totally unrelated question, any suggestions of someone who might be willing to help create a template like Template:cfb link and Template:cbb link for college baseball?Billcasey905 (talk) 20:49, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
Take your time, it's more important that you produce a high quality article that takes longer than a crappy stub that takes 10 minutes. To answer your question, I would drop a note at WT:BASEBALL. It's a heavily watched talk page by the regular baseball contributors, and I'm sure someone could either make one for you or know an editor who could. Jrcla2 (talk) 21:04, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
Saw that you finished Truesdale - nice job. Keep up the good work. Jrcla2 (talk) 21:00, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your cleanup, putting things into two columns especially helps. Billcasey905 (talk) 01:39, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

NCAA baseball template

Thanks for attempting to take on my idea. The baseball page doesn't really allow you to elaborate on your idea so thanks for asking. What I had in mind was indeed a template for conference tournament infobox, so the name of the template may need to be different from what I put on the baseball page. I thought it should include stuff such as a logo for the tournament, tournament dates, number of teams, ballpark, location, tournament format, winning team, number of tournament wins for that team, tournament MVP, and of course links to the previous year and following year. I sort of based this off of the template:Infobox NCAA Basketball Conference Tournament that already exist so you may be able to use some of this for the code. Let me know what you think. I personally think it would be nice for the conference tournament pages. Thanks again for taking this on for me (us all). Tnbailey09 (talk)

Gators who were Bulldogs coaches

Bill, thanks for participating in the current RfC at WP:CBBALL. In looking over your user page, I noted your personal redlink infobox project of former Citadel coaches without articles. I can share a little information regarding two of them: Ben Clemons and Fred Montsdeoca. Both are member of the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame. Neither have stand-alone WP articles, but both were multi-sport stars for the Gators, and Clemons also served as the head baseball, head basketball coach and assistant football coach for the Gators from 1934 to 1936. It would appear that both are of marginal notability per WP:N at best, but you could easily incorporate them into "list of" articles for your coaching successions. Please let me know if I can help in any way. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 14:26, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the info, that'll help when I get around to those. The Citadel's always been a coaching factory, I guess marginal success there portends greater success elsewhere. Billcasey905 (talk) 16:29, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

College Baseball All-American Teams

Hey Bill, I tried out a slightly modified template for the 1985 College Baseball All-America Team to help cut down on the clutter in the 'Notes' section and more easily identify Award winners and College Baseball Hall of Famers. Curious as to your thoughts.Mizzou415 (talk) 17:37, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Some changes

I made some changes to your changes on {{CBSB Standings End}} and {{CBSB Standings Entry}}. Give them a try and let me know what you think. --ben_b (talk) 20:10, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

I'm not too particular about which symbol is used, but I like being able to distinguish between the regular season and tournament champ when a conference has different ones - it happens pretty frequently too. I think its important to distinguish between a team that's a round-robin champion like the Pac-12 and a tournament champion like the SEC, also. Billcasey905 (talk) 01:01, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
Sounds good on changing the symbols to be different. I'm a bit confused on the last sentence? Also for conferences with tournaments does the tourney winner get the NCAA bid and the conf champ or just tourney winner? How do you think is best to show which teams were part of the tourney? --ben_b (talk) 20:47, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
Not all leagues have a conference tournament - the Pac-12, Big West and and West Coast Conferences award their automatic bid to the regular season champion. The Ivy League has a 3 game series between the champions of their two divisions, while the rest of the leagues have tournaments of 4 to 8 teams to determine who claims their automatic bid. From what I've seen, it's even more common than in basketball that the tournament champion is a team other than the regular season champion, that's why I think we need to have a way to identify both regular season and tournament champions. Which symbols we use doesn't matter a whole lot to me. I also think we should indicate which teams in a conference are invited to the NCAA Tournament. For which teams make the conference tournament, I think that's best left to the tournament pages - you can see how that is handled at 2011 Southern Conference Baseball Tournament. Billcasey905 (talk) 01:36, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
I updated them to use different symbols. Do you think we should be indicating somehow which team received the automatic bid. It's hard to picture some of this stuff since the template isn't widely used for any teams with postseason history yet. --ben_b (talk) 02:19, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
Moved discussion to Template talk:CBSB Standings End. --ben_b (talk) 08:54, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

Southern Conference Baseball Tournament navbox

When hidden {{Southern Conference Baseball Tournament navbox}} seems to have functionality issues. --ben_b (talk) 02:27, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Re:2012 NCAA Division I baseball season

Agreed, that's probably it. That explains why the issue shows up when I view the page but not when I edit the section. I've run into a similar problem with userboxes. Perhaps we could cut down on the use of the template a bit? For the Atlantic Sun row, for instance, use it once for player of the year and leave the plain text for coach? Kithira (talk) 22:57, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

Sounds good, I'll try to take care of the conference tournament table, at least. Incidentally, thanks for all the work you've been putting in during the postseason. The conference tournament articles look great. After the postseason rush dies down, let me know if you'd be interested in posting some collaborations on the college baseball project page. There's still a few venue pages that haven't been completed, and the coach, program, and historic conference tournament articles could use some additions, as well. Enjoy the regionals this weekend! 1922 Southern Conference football Standings

Still researching this curiosity, but I think the issue might be that Sewanee and Vanderbilt were members of both SoCon and the SIAA from 1922-1924. It would explain how Vandy is sometimes mentioned as joining in '22, sometimes in '24, and why Sewanee is sometimes not listed in the conference but is usually counted as a conference game to give Vandy a conference record of 4-0. Take for instance that Sewanee played only one SIAA school and 5 Southern schools. Pardon to bother, just if there is anything you know to help me with and you're willing to tell I'd appreciate it. Cake (talk) 08:46, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

It'll take me some time to locate the source again, but for several years in the early 20's, several schools were members of both the SIAA and SoCon. Billcasey905 (talk) 02:51, 26 November 2012 (UTC)
I have one source as one of the first few references on the page for the 1922 Vandy team, it does mention Vanderbilt so I am quite sure they were members of both from 22-24, but it does not mention Sewanee at all. If memory serves it only mentions Vanderbilt, but does say there were other unnamed schools in both. Not sure if that helps, but maybe seeing it will spark some memory and/or be the source you were talking about. If I could find a source for Sewanee's conference membership during this year it would help assuage a few problems it seems; for instance on the wiki version of the southern conference standings for 1922 Vanderbilt and Tennessee do not have Sewanee counted, but Alabama does (it was the Tide's one tie). By all means take your time; but if you find anything on Sewanee I would be grateful.Cake (talk) 07:30, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Re: Bulldog Park

"I feel that Division I baseball venues are inherently notable." My thoughts exactly, but I also agree that this is contingent on having enough sources to give the article some meat. I'm hesitant, though, to do subsections on team articles to get rid of the redlinked SWAC venues, because I'm afraid of the precedent that'd set. I'm inclined to restore Bulldog Park, but I'll look it over some more this afternoon and let you know if anything changes. Also, thanks, as always, for doing the requested articles thing on the talk page. It's gotten me motivated for my upcoming two weeks of winter break. Kithira (talk) 19:07, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Okay, so I'm thinking of waiting until a little after the season starts, on the off chance there's media coverage of the program with its move to the A-10. I figure 2 1/2 months isn't much, given the possible upside. Kithira (talk) 22:27, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
Good thinking. Might even be worth waiting for conference play to start up. Billcasey905 (talk) 00:47, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

Another quick question

This one regarding the season articles. I noticed that for 2012 NCAA Division I baseball season, you removed the commented-out standings table. Was this because the format of using the standings templates (as opposed to the standard tables on 2007, for example) wasn't working? Or for some other reason? Just thought I'd check, as I'm slowly putting together some of the earlier season articles in my spare time. Kithira (talk) 19:45, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

I took it out because the format wasn't working and it was keeping me from trying to finish up the page. There's still a number of awards we haven't put in, and I kept getting errors when I tried to fill some of them in. When I took that table out, it worked. It seems like 31 standings tables in template format is too many, even when I change most of the entries to static links rather than CBSB link. I think as long as we don't have conference season pages, having the conference standings on the main season page is important, just haven't gone back to add them in to 2012 yet. Billcasey905 (talk) 19:53, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, I seem to remember having similar template problems with the page. I agree on having the standings in the season articles, so I'll proceed with the format used in the 2007 article. Kithira (talk) 22:03, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

College baseball question

Can you head over to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College baseball#All-America players question to address a question I've raised concerning All-American college baseball players? Thank you. Jrcla2 (talk) 18:49, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi Bill. I have proposed a new idea on the criteria we will consider for which College Baseball All-Americans should be included in the navboxes versus those who shouldn't. I'd like to try to gain a more firm consensus before moving ahead with the navboxes' creation, so when you get a chance your input would be welcome. Jrcla2 (talk) 16:40, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

While creating the baseball AA navboxes, I noticed that there is a Citadel player who you may want to add to your to-do list. Anthony Jenkins was an AA in 1990 and appears on {{1990 College Baseball All-Americans}}. Jrcla2 (talk) 14:28, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Structuring years in infoboxes

Just as a friendly heads up, when creating biographies, years are always listed from oldest (at top) to most recent (at bottom). See the changes I made to Frank Cruz to reflect this. Thanks! Jrcla2 (talk) 18:32, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

OK, understood. I had seen some going the other way, so that's why I went with most recent at the top. I'll try to catch the ones I did that way. Billcasey905 (talk) 18:55, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Category descriptions

Just a friendly reminder to please include descriptions in newly created college baseball categories (e.g. Category:Randolph–Macon Yellow Jackets baseball coaches). Most people won't know 99.99% of the schools in these baseball categories, so unless a concise description is provided, the category is generally meaningless. For the Randolph–Macon category, for example, only some Virginians and even fewer non-Virginians would know Randolph–Macon College even exists, so the description clarifies where those baseball coaches coached. Thanks! Jrcla2 (talk) 19:18, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

Makes sense. I'll try to clean that up. Thanks! Billcasey905 (talk) 19:49, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

GSU Baseball Coach

Hi Bill, I actually meant to make a page for Greg Frady but hadn't gotten around to it. I'll certainly begin work on it as soon as i get some free time and some background research done. I'll look into some of the GSU archives and see if there is enough to warren pages for past coaches. Skapunkskatedude (talk) 15:11, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

I'm still fairly new to developing wiki pages, but I am pretty passionate about baseball, especially collegiate. Baseball tagging

Hi there. I see you've been doing a lot of college baseball work, which is great to see. Just a heads up, when you're tagging the articles, would you be able to assess them as well? Most of them appear to be start-class, so it's simple enough. If you'd rather not that's fine, just something to further complete the articles. Wizardman 16:16, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Sure, I'll try to do a better job of that. Thanks! Billcasey905 (talk) 17:18, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Decline reason: autoblock appears to be working as intended.--Anthony Bradbury"talk" 14:57, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

I concur that the block is working as intended, but the block seems excessively broad. Following links within the block, I see that it was imposed because one user made one edit (which has not even been undone) to one page, which clearly was a violation of COI policies. A broad IP block seems excessive for this when more targeted blocks could have been used - i.e. block the account, block new registrations of accounts from this IP address, and block anonymous IP users from editing. Blocking all users, even confirmed, registered users with with no history of violating policies, seems out of place. When I first asked for the block to be lifted, I thought it was indefinite. Now I see that the autoblock expires shortly, so I will simply wait for that, but I thought it important to note my concerns nonetheless. Billcasey905 (talk) 16:37, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Hey Billcasey905

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

Yearly records for Flake Laird

Bill, can you please go to my user draft space at User:Jrcla2/sandbox and fill in the baseball yearly coaching records for Flake Laird, the article I'm currently working on? I won't be much at my computer tonight or the rest of the weekend and so us interrupting each other is unlikely. I'd like to have someone from the college baseball project fill in that table because I don't quite understand postseason appearances (if applicable), etc. Plus, Laird seems like one of the winningest coaches in Virginia Tech history, so his article is long overdue. Thanks! Jrcla2 (talk) 21:09, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Absolutely, I'll try to take care of it tonight. Thanks for getting it started! Billcasey905 (talk) 21:53, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Okay so I got enough of it to be put onto mainspace. Can you verify whether the baseball conference affiliations are correct for each of the schools? For Davidson and Tech, neither media guide listed them as having played in a conference during those times, which I find to be strange (for Davidson, they were part of the SoCon, but did the SoCon not sponsor baseball then? I'm confused). Anywho I'm basically done editing for the weekend, so any additions/cleanup/possible corrections you can do to Flake Laird would be appreciated! Jrcla2 (talk) 15:52, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
I sure will. The SoCon didn't begin sponsoring baseball until 1947, most teams (definitely including VT, and pretty sure also Davidson) played as independents until then. Thanks for your work on this. Billcasey905 (talk) 16:55, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

I notice you removed the Notability template from the above, but I am not seeing what about this event meets the WP:NEVENT guideline, specificity, I am not seeing how the event is one that "is a precedent or catalyst for something else of lasting significance" how it had "significant impact over a wide region, domain, or widespread societal group", where is "coverage beyond a relatively short news cycle" and the "significant or in-depth coverage" ? LGA talkedits 10:54, 5 August 2013 (UTC)

Conference tournaments in college sports are notable because they determine conference championships, and most of the winners advance to the final tournament which determines the national champion. These are widely followed and watched events - particularly in baseball and basketball, coverage increases dramatically at this point in the season, and non-enthusiasts are drawn to the sport. Billcasey905 (talk) 13:43, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
The same can be said for any sports fixture; why not an article on any of tonight's MLB games, each of them to a greater or lesser extent could effect who wins any given division and in the end the World Series; each of them will have plenty of sources to choose from; arguably more and probably many from international media. LGA talkedits 22:31, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
Not so, this is a single set of games, the end result of which solely determines the conference champion. Tonight's MLB games have some bearing, but by themselves do not determine the champion. While not a perfect analogy, these are more like the Division Series held prior to the League Championship Series and World Series each season in MLB. And sure, there are more and a wider variety of sources for MLB, but that doesn't affect the notability of these events. There are multiple, independent, reliable sources for these tournaments, which is the standard. Billcasey905 (talk) 22:58, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
No it is not the standard, the overriding policy is WP:NOTNEWS and I quote :
"Wikipedia considers the enduring notability of persons and events. While news coverage can be useful source material for encyclopedic topics, most newsworthy events do not qualify for inclusion. For example, routine news reporting on things like announcements, sports, or celebrities is not a sufficient basis for inclusion in the encyclopedia. "
as all the sources are just that routine news reporting there there is very good case that this article fails that policy. WP is not a sports or news reporting service, there is nothing in that article that demonstrates what encyclopaedic notability that sports event was. LGA talkedits 23:05, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
I disagree with your interpretation, and it is clear we will not agree. I believe the article is notable and you clearly do not. I explained what I believe makes this event notable, and added multiple, reliable, independent sources to support this. I see no point in continuing this discussion. Billcasey905 (talk) 23:23, 5 August 2013 (UTC)

Hey

It's been a month since you've edited, and I'm hoping it's due to vacation. Don't let a couple AfDs turn you against Wikipedia (if that is what's causing this long break). You're a good contributor and hopefully we see you active again soon. Jrcla2 (talk) 13:20, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for checking in, I had a pretty intense grad school class for the month of August that pretty well tied me up. While they were disappointing, I knew the AfD's were coming eventually and that some of the season pages would be a stretch to defend. I did need a break, and so the timing was about right to step away for a bit. I'll be back to editing as time allows and hope I can continue to contribute. Billcasey905 (talk) 12:22, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the "Thank you"

Hey, I just noticed you gave me a "Thank you" notice for my edits on the Military Classic of the South page. I am a big VMI fan myself, and I see you are a Citadel fan. Are you watching the game today? It should be pretty good. Or at least, better than it has been in some years.

I've got it on the radio now, wanted to make the trip down but it just wasn't in the cards this year. Sounds like a good one, as it should be. Looking forward to having you guys back in the SoCon too. Thanks for your work on here. Billcasey905 (talk) 19:43, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

Useful reference for dates of birth

For some reason, college baseball coaches' birth dates are rarely provided on their school's biography (football and basketball coaches are much more open with that information, for whatever reason). When creating new head coach articles, try using the NCAA player/coach database. It's not a 100% guarantee you'll find what you need, but it's very useful. For example, I found John Russo's DOB by using that. Jrcla2 (talk) 14:30, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, never even knew that existed. I've only been able to find DOBs reliably when the coach played professionally. Billcasey905 (talk) 14:41, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

is for internal wikipedia links only. Links to baseball cube or other websites should be put in a external links section....William 22:17, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

2013 WCC Baseball Standings Template

Please explain why you reverted the 2013 WCC Baseball Standings Template that I had corrected and deleted the ties off of. There are no ties in baseball. I am going to correct it again unless you explain why you are making this page inaccurate.Bigddan11 (talk) 23:45, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

Please see the official standings. Gonzaga played a game to a tie. In college baseball, sometimes games do end it ties. Billcasey905 (talk) 01:47, 16 February 2014 (UTC)

Game log for 2015 Arkansas Razorbacks baseball team

Could you by chance upload the regular season game log to the page? I'd keep up with it if you did.

Thanks!

Sure, it'll probably take a day or two to be done but I'll load one. Billcasey905 (talk) 19:29, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

Can you add the NCAA Tournament tables? I think Arkansas is safely in at this point. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Daoxford1 (talkcontribs) 21:19, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

Can you update the game log for the 2015 Arkansas baseball team now? I need April and May uploaded as well if you don't mind.

I tried to figure out on my own how to add the regional the team made into the postseason tab, but I messed up on the formatting.

Ragin' Cajuns Information

What part of the Ragin' Cajuns information did you find necessary to change? The title was untouched but your note seem to imply that was your objection.

The athletic teams of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette have been competing since 1901. The school uses Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (often abbreviated to Cajuns) as its official nickname <ref>http://www.louisiana.edu/about-us/media/proper-use-universitys-name</ref>. The university is a member of the Sun Belt Conference. The Ragin' Cajuns compete in NCAA Division I, fielding 16 varsity teams. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rmatics (talkcontribs) 15:39, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

Because it removes the title of the page from the lead of the article (see WP:Lead). The naming issue can be captured elsewhere, even in the second sentence. I'll paste the text below into the article, feel free to wordsmith but keep the WP:MOS and WP:NPOV in mind when doing so. Thanks for bringing this to a talk page.
The Louisiana–Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns are the athletic teams of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, which have been competing intercollegiately since 1901. The school uses Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (often abbreviated to Cajuns) as its official nickname.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.louisiana.edu/about-us/media/proper-use-universitys-name|title=Proper Use of the University's Name|publisher=University of Louisiana at Lafayette|accessdate=April 17, 2014}}</ref> The university is a member of the Sun Belt Conference. Billcasey905 (talk) 15:57, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for compromise attempt, I won't touch it for now while I do more research on the topic. Your effort seems to be a good faith one. I read the lead section requirements but do not discern where a page title must be repeated in the lead.

With the Title established (even if the hyphen breaks Louisiana law) I felt my lead helped establish the background of everything that was to follow.

Do you have a reference demanding a Page Title repeat in the lead?

Thanks Rmatics (talk

"Opening paragraph

The first paragraph should define the topic with a neutral point of view, but without being overly specific. "

I know there was a title consensus that broke the title consensus of 2011 but lets put that issue aside for now. By opening the lead with "The Louisiana–Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns" it breaks the best practices of opening paragraph "The first paragraph should define the topic with a neutral point of view, but without being overly specific."

It is not neutral because it forces a name that the school does not use and thrusts it into the public domain. Which is why I gave the related association to the artificial page title without trying to change the page title due to said most recent consensus.

I really appreciate you attempt at a compromise.

Kentucky Wildcats baseball navbox

Thanks for creating this navbox. College baseball is really gained a lot in popularity in the past couple of years, and thanks to you (and a few others), this growth is being reflected in wikipedia. Thanks again for your work in CBB! --rogerd (talk) 20:13, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Batten down the hatches Bill, here they come. It's about to get crazy over there for the next couple of weeks. I'll do my best to stay on top of it but I see some midnight raids in our immediate future. They just don't get it - is there some way to direct them to the 2014 NCAA playoffs article? College baseball team navboxes

Billcasey905, I see that you are leading a charge to standardize and create college baseball team navboxes in line with the standards established for college football and basketball. Good stuff. I've made some edits this evening to bring all the existing college baseball team navboxes under a new category, Category:NCAA Division I baseball team navigational boxes. Also note a new category to group college baseball navboxes by team: Category:American college baseball team navigational boxes by team. As for the content of the navboxes, I have one note. Underlining CWS years is not a good stylistic choice because all the seasons, as wikilinks, appear to be underlined. A better choice would be to follow the example of the basketball navboxes, where Final Four appearances are italicized, e.g. Template:UCLA Bruins men's basketball navbox. All the best, Jweiss11 (talk) 04:31, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

Attribution

Hi! It seems that when you created 1969 NCAA University Division baseball season, and possibly some other similar pages, you re-used text from some other article in the series. That's fine, as you know, as long as you provide attribution to the editors who created the content. Could I ask you you to check through your recent edits and provide attribution where needed? {{copied}} is good for that. For the future, providing attribution in an edit summary when creating a new article using "boilerplate" text won't stop the bot from flagging a possible copyvio, but will allow people to mark it quickly as a false positive and get on with more serious problems. Thanks, regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 08:20, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Template:2015 Big 12 Conference baseball standings

Hi. The reason I changed the links to redlinks is because of expensive parser function calls, I can't place all of the standing templates in 2015 NCAA Division I baseball season. But I guess if you really want to keep the blue links then I can hold off posting all the standings templates. Mpejkrm (talk) 18:34, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

Unfortunately, they won't all fit on the page anyway. That's why we haven't had all 30+ conference templates on the page at once. When we add the preseason polls, we'll really have a problem. And it will get worse with conference champions at the end of the season. We fought with it on the 2012 page for a long time but couldn't get it to work. Thanks for trying and we really appreciate that you've got the standings templates all created, but it's probably best to just pick about 20 or so conferences for the main season page. Billcasey905 (talk) 18:37, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
OK then. I will get rid of some of the smaller conferences in that case. Mpejkrm (talk) 18:40, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
I think the only ones that absolutely should be on there are ACC, SEC, Big XII, Big West, Pac-12, C-USA, AAC, and Big 10. Other than that, just use your discretion. Maybe multi-bid leagues from last year's tournament is a good bar? I don't think there's any real consensus. Billcasey905 (talk) 18:42, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
Agreed and my plan, for now, is to get the season pages for all of those teams done before the season starts. Based on how much time I have, I may try to do more teams, and hopefully for next season I can get all the teams done. But for now, yes, just those and a couple other two-bid leagues. I guess if I (and others) get a lot of team pages done then the template limit won't be an issue and we can put more standings templates there. Mpejkrm (talk) 18:45, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
Exactly. I'm working more on historical stuff, and then just try to keep the current season pages somewhat standardized other than my 3 favorite teams. You've done a lot of great work and I know everyone working on the project will appreciate it. Don't overburden yourself, we've had people the last few years try to take on dozens of season pages and burn out - it can be a lot of work to keep even one or two up to date through 60+ game seasons! Billcasey905 (talk) 18:48, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
Haha, I'll try. I really enjoy doing this kind of stuff, so it's fun to see all your hard work look great when the season is over. Thanks again. Mpejkrm (talk) 18:52, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

College Baseball Rankings

Hey Billcasey,

What do you think about adding the forthcoming Top 25 rankings from Perfect Game USA and D1Baseball.com to 2015 NCAA Division I baseball rankings and Template:NCAA Division I baseball ranking movements? Both of these are notable college baseball reporting websites, as PG has been big for a while now and D1Baseball just hired two of the biggest guys in the business in PG's Kendall Rogers and Baseball America's Aaron Fitt. Or do you think six different rankings is too much? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks. Mpejkrm (talk) 00:15, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi Mitch, I don't have a really strong opinion on Perfect Game as I've seen those mentioned outside the Perfect Game network, but I haven't seen anyone cite D1Baseball yet. I understand they're revamping their operations and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do. When we built the rankings pages, we used the ones cited in the NCAA Record Book, and so that's why those 4 were chosen. One other concern is the completed pages take a while to load with the 4 as it is, so I'd suggest keeping an eye on the page size and performance. That said, I'd be fine with adding PG and considering D1B if you think its a valuable addition. You could solicit opinions on the project page too. Billcasey905 (talk) 14:27, 10 January 2015 (UTC)
Ah yes, if it's going to take a long time to load then I understand. I think sticking with four is OK but I'll ask on the project page. Thanks for your input. Mpejkrm (talk) 16:06, 10 January 2015 (UTC)
Hey Bill, just a follow up. As I said on the project page, I don't think adding the rankings to the template is going to work because that would require going through every single CBSB page with the template and adding the rankings which I just don't have the time to do. Would you be alright with listing it on the rankings list page with all the other rankings though? As well as D1B, not sure about that. Thanks. Mpejkrm (talk) 14:40, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
I don't have any problem with it, certainly for PG. For D1Baseball, I'd be interested in seeing if media services pick it up at all. We might even see it replace PG in some outlets with Kendall Rodgers gone. As for the ranking movements template, I'd suggest seeing if you can add it as an optional parameter rather than a required one. That way it doesn't mess up any of the older seasons. Billcasey905 (talk) 16:17, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
Alright, I'll add the PG rankings for now and look into optional parameters with the sandbox. Mpejkrm (talk) 20:15, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
Just a thought but D1 is already up on the NCAAs website, which PG is not. I think ultimately, D1Baseball will become the power over PG and maybe even BA. Wasnt Fitt the only one to do BA, who's going to do it now? I would put D1 on the template especially over PG and maybe even replace BA with it. Just my opinion, will leave it up to y'all though. Zwilson14 (talk) 03:24, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

Your input is requested . . . .

CBSB schedule template

Hey, do you have any idea how to create a schedule start and schedule end for Template:CBSB Schedule Entry? Another user suggested we finish that template for college baseball season pages, but I was trying to play around with making a start and end similar to Template:CBB schedule start and Template:CIH schedule start but I really don't know how. Considering you made the schedule entry, I didn't know if you knew how to do it or if someone knows how to do it. Not urgent, but if it helps with code like I was told, then all the better. Mpejkrm (talk) 00:23, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

I've experimented a few times but haven't been able to make a template other than the entry one work properly. I'll give it another shot sometime soon, but it likely will be at least a week or two. Billcasey905 (talk) 18:44, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
OK. I think for this season collapsible tables should be fine and then we can experiment over the off-season. Mpejkrm (talk) 18:46, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi BC905,

And thanks for checking up behind me. I noticed that part of your cleanup included converting some team entries to the Cbsb link template. I'm all for following established methods, but noticed that on 18 March 2015 AnomieBOT undid some of your earlier conversions. Going forward, what do you think/suggest? Dumboldboy (talk) 15:14, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

Glad to help, I try to keep the baseball pages generally standardized so that people can navigate through them easily for what they are looking for. CBSB link is a template to point to the most specific available page about a baseball program. AnomieBot is an automated account that makes a number of different administrative edits so that users don't have to. If the most specific page (a team season, such as 2015 South Carolina Gamecocks baseball team) exists, AnomieBOT automatically converts the template to a static link. This is exactly what it is supposed to do, so there's no problem whatsoever. This way, if someone creates a page for another team next week (say, 2015 College of Charleston Cougars baseball team), the link will be converted shortly after that page is created and there's less work for you or I to do. Hope this helps, and thanks for your work in keeping the Gamecocks page up to date. Billcasey905 (talk) 16:08, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

2015 College World Series for Arkansas

Can you help me?

No consensus for this

Bill, this is not an improvement: [2]. I have gone along with the single color scheme -- blue and blue, inside and out -- for the Gators CFB navbox in order to keep peace in the family, but it looks like shit. Furthermore, adding 85 season red links for non-existent season articles, most of which will never exist, is a violation of the no-red-links principle for navboxes, and subjects them to being deleted at TfD. If this is the "standard" format for WP:College baseball -- simply duplicating what WP:CFB has done -- you need to re-think it. Most of the CFB season articles already exist; most of the college baseball season articles never will, and for lack of notability, never should. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 14:27, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

Citadel

Bill--just trying to put the facts back into the article--not trying to vandalize. Many folks get degrees from the school, wear a ring, and are proud of our accomplishments, but were not cadets. Bob80 tries to diminish that fact. Also, there have been numerous reverts which are not factual: We offer 3 online degrees now, the civilian offerings and enrollment has expanded vastly, and the whole school did not fight as a unit at Tulifinny, as it was 2 separate campuses. In whole, the civilian aspects are always diminished by another user. Just trying to keep it factual. The endowment figures are off as well--it's more like $189M... User:69.1.22.120 (talk) 13:32, 23 November 2015 (UTC) (moved by Billcasey905 (talk) 15:08, 23 November 2015 (UTC))

I've proposed a reorganization of The Citadel article on the talk page. Please take a look at that and comment. Yes, civilian programs exist and are growing, but most readers are still interested in the Corps of Cadets when they visit the page. I don't think it's unreasonable to focus on that program, as long as other degree programs are discussed, with proper citations. For the other details regarding numbers, please provide a source. The information in the infobox is cited from US News, and so should not be changed without a better or more recent source. I know The Citadel has established new programs over the past several weeks, including at least 1 additional online master's degree, 3 additional on-campus engineering master's degrees, and a variety of certificate programs. There should be information on that somewhere that can be cited to come up with the right numbers.
I need to do more research on Tulifinny to know where I stand on that, but on the face it sounds like an argument over semantics. One campus was auxiliary to the other, and collectively they were called the "South Carolina Military Academy." One campus composed Company A, while the other was Company B within the same battalion, with upperclass cadets from The Citadel filling NCO roles in the company composed of Arsenal cadets. One or two campuses seems immaterial. I am aware of several colleges who saw all or the vast majority of their student body serve in combat, including VMI, Alabama, and Mississippi. I've even been told that William & Mary's student body served at Yorktown in 1781, although I've seen no written information on that. There is significant history here to be explored and documented, maybe all editors involved could spend more time on that and less trying to denigrate one school or another. Speaking to all of us here, not just you. Billcasey905 (talk) 15:43, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

Bill, Great edits on Citadel page. There 29 non-cadet degree programs at the school, with 8 of them being completely online undergraduate and graduate degree programs. As the edit now shows, not all cadets are required to live on campus for 4 years, which is fact. Cadets can transition to the day undergrad program after 2 years. Thanks for your edits and cleaning up my posts! Strgzr1 (talk) 19:38, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

I'm aware of 29 master's degrees, and agree on the 8 online degree programs. However, these numbers are changing frequently right now, so I dropped the specifics as it will be difficult to keep them up to date. On your other assertion regarding the length of the cadet requirement to live on campus, please provide a citation. I'll leave it for now, but that is contrary to other cited material on the page. Additionally, the numbers of students are based on cited material. If you have more recent numbers, please provide a source. Billcasey905 (talk) 20:05, 23 May 2016 (UTC)
Sounds good Bill, in the edit summary section I pointed out the statement that in four undergrad programs all lower-level coursework can be completed at the school. This enables cadets who have completed as little as one semester to enroll in the non-cadet undergrad program. It also dispels the false rumor (perpetuated by many supporters of the school) that only veterans or those with associate degrees can enroll in the Citadel's many undergrad programs. To illustrate the variety of graduates (not just cadets) from the Citadel each year, I'll also include the Citadel's 2016 profile of graduates.

Cheers!Strgzr1 (talk) 18:03, 25 May 2016 (UTC)

Please add your citation to the article itself. The assertion in the text and the edit summary remains inconsistent with other properly cited material. Billcasey905 (talk) 18:23, 25 May 2016 (UTC)
Got it Bill, and thanks again for your assistance in maintaining the citadel article's accuracy. Seems Bob80Q has some serious issues, but I can assure you my goal in anything regarding this article is simply to be accurate. To that end, let's ensure the "only time in history" comment remains removed from the article once and for all, as it is completely inaccurate. There are many schools that can make this claim and have many references (including those from their own websites) which could be used to verify. I have left the "Battle" of Tulifanny in, but removed any peacock terms surrounding it as it is unfair to other schools such as William and Mary, Virginia Military Institute, Georgia Military Institute, etc. etc. etc. Please note the "Battle" of Tulifinny was actually a series of skirmishes. Let's keep it accurate. Also want to add that there needs to be a more clear delineation made in the main body of the article regarding the citadel core day military or simply state it as corps of cadets program offerings vs other citadel offerings. It's getting better, but just like Texas A&M, Norwich, etc, anything to do with the citadel school does not necessarily, or by extension apply to the cadet corps because the school has diversified and now has so many other students. Recommend the statement "the citadel core day military program offers..." or "the corps of cadets offers..." Overall, the article is looking better and is getting more accurate. Thanks to everyone in making this article better. Strgzr1 (talk) 18:07, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

Southland Conference Standings sources

Thanks for all the work you do for the college baseball Wikipedia pages.

At least for right now, I believe d1Baseball.com may be a better source for Southland Conference standings. It looks like the Southland Conference website is omitting some games. For example Lamar's record following last night's win is 7-3; not 7-2 as depicted by the SLC. Looking at the schedule, it looks like the SLC omitted the second game of the 2/27 double header against North Dakota State. Lamar lost that game to the Bison by a score of 0-3. Lamar played four games against the Bison, but the SLC schedule is only reflecting 3 games (even though "DH" is by the one 2/27 game). In addition, it looks like there may be omissions affecting the standings of other SLC programs after comparing the standings per d1Baseball.com versus standings on the Southland Conference website.LUSportsFan (talk) 18:49, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

That works for me. Independent sources are typically better, but historically I found the conferences updated their own numbers faster and so I simply left those as the sources for the ones that I maintained. I'm perfectly comfortable with the change - especially in cases where we find issues. As a fan, I've noticed that d1Baseball has really stepped up and seems to be trying to be as up to date and accurate as possible (and is now accounting for official ties, where they didn't always in the past) and so shifting most or even all of our standings to tracking them might be a good idea. Let's be bold and make the change, starting with SLC this week, and if anyone raises an issue we can have a discussion on the project talk page. Billcasey905 (talk) 21:03, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

No problem at all. A lot of the category trees outside of NCAA Division I are a bit of a mess. As I've had the time and patience, I've tried to build them out with this logic:
  • School category (or page if no cat exists) in a category called (Conference) schools
  • Team category (or page if no cat exists) in a category called (Conference) teams
  • Sport category (or page if no cat exists) in a category called (Conference) (sport)
Hope this helps! Billcasey905 (talk) 20:24, 6 March 2016 (UTC)

Help stubbing out bio articles to preserve navboxes

Billcasey905, how's it going? Corkythehornetfan is in the process of identifying NCAA Division I coach and athletic director navboxes that have few blue links and are therefore potential candidates for deletion. He's compiling a list here. Given your focus on college baseball, I thought perhaps you would be able to attack the baseball coach navboxes on the list and see about creating new articles such that each navbox has at least four blue links. I plan to tackle any athletic director or football coach navboxes that appear on the list. Let me know if are able to chip in here. Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 01:10, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

Sure, I'll do my best to help out. I'd expect to see a lot of college baseball navboxes on that list, I know a lot of them were created with very few blue links and we've struggled to flesh them out in many cases. Billcasey905 (talk) 12:32, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

In regards to this edit, the Light blue is not the background color for contrast reasons. I've reverted your edit, but changed it so the light blue will display in the infoboxes as the color. However, right now it will display as [White] and [Citadel Blue] in the inboxes, but I am working on getting that fixed so it will display as [Citadel Blue] and [White]. ☔️ Corkythehornetfan 🌺 01:42, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

2016 College World Series

Made it back just in time to help Bill. It's time for the crazies to come out of the woodwork. Every year we spend two weeks fighting off the PAC 12 crowd trying to pad their overall record stats despite what the NCAA record book clearly states. Owell, I have a feeling that this is going to be a particularly frosty CWS - keeping it organized, timely and on track may be a real chore. I'll do my best to check it nightly, late shift. Let me know if we need to double team this thing this year with any specific methodology. Hopefully everyone will edit with class this year. Scrooster (talk) 19:03, 14 June 2016 (UTC)

Why would you change links to non-existent pages and then redirect to the originally linked page??? If you are going to create those pages, fine, but please create them before linking to them... As at least one Wiki-administrator has noted, unnecessary redirects wastes headroom... Also... soccer standings use use CFB (College FootBall (as in asSOCiation football)) not CBSB (College BaSeBall)... New England Small College Athletic Conference

Hi. I noticed you've removed "Category:New England Small College Athletic Conference" from college articles, but your edit summary doesn't explain why. Could you please explain? It's still a valid conference, and Wikipedia article, as far as I know. Thanks. Contributor321 (talk) 19:58, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

Absolutely. Typically, we don't have both the category and eponymous article in the same category. For example, the category for Amherst College is within the category for NESCAC schools. If you take a look at Category:New England Small College Athletic Conference schools, all of the schools are there. This is the typical structure for collegiate conferences, although its still a work in progress to get the smaller ones into this structure. Hope I answered the question, even if my response is a bit arcane. Billcasey905 (talk) 00:40, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

1949 Yankee Conference Football Standings

Hey! I was going over Yankee Conference football pages and noticed with the 1949 Standings that even though Vermont, Connecticut, and Maine all had 2 wins and 0 losses, the league title was shared by just Connecticut and Maine. I'm guessing this was because they played a third league game against each other and tied, therefore the league felt it was appropriate to award it to them for playing more league games, but I was just curious if you knew for certain why Vermont wasn't included. Every source I've looked at only lists UConn and Maine and I'm hoping to find some old article that explained it better. Either way, thanks for the contribution and your help! Frank12 (talk) 06:07, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

Hi Frank, I was surprised by that too. I haven't found anything to explain it, but all I can think of is that the league must have had a minimum number of games required in order to be named champion. Would be nice to find an explanation. Billcasey905 (talk) 12:31, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

SC state titles

Hi Bill. Thanks again for your work on The Citadel and SIAA in general. I noticed the 1916 team was the 'state champion'. I try to note such things when it mattered, like Sewanee's 1892 Tennessee state title or Stetson's 1901 state title, since other editors noted e. g. Nebraska's 1891 state title. However, Florida was much later than even SC in playing football, and 1916 is too late for anyone to care about state championships for FL. With Clemson's rise under Heisman in 1900, I am surprised to see any claim after that date. Perhaps such is why Florida claimed the SC state championship in 1911. In less long-winded terms, if you have a list of South Carolina state football champions, please let me see it. Cake (talk) 07:30, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I don't have a list. I know that South Carolina newspapers (including the Charleston News and Courier) carried "Big Four" football standings back in those days, and the "state championship" was claimed by the school finishing at the top of those standings. Those schools were Clemson, South Carolina, Furman, and The Citadel. Because of paywalls on newspapers, the only places I've gotten "state championship" claims are from the school media guides themselves. For The Citadel, they come from the main booster organization (here) and older versions of the media guide. If I can find anything better, I'll be sure to let you know. As far as 1911, I think Florida is making that claim somewhat tongue in cheek, having defeated two of the Big 4, tied a third, and also defeated College of Charleston. Billcasey905 (talk) 18:54, 11 January 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for the source. No doubt Florida is being cheeky there, but I wonder if why they are being cheeky is because SC is still claiming state titles when Florida no longer cares about them, despite Florida starting football much later. The 1938 claim makes me skeptical. Also, there are cases like say 1895 with UNC or 1915 with Georgia Tech where teams claim titles for conferences they aren't in, so it's not a stretch to do it with a state. PS Heisman ranks all the teams in the SIAA in 1909 (their first season according to your source) and doesn't mention The Citadel, though he does mention "one or two others like Furman and Wofford" who don't play football. Cake (talk) 06:24, 12 January 2017 (UTC)
Looks like Clemson claims it in the 1930s too. Odd. Would love to see a pre-1900 claim. Wonder who claims 1902. Furman lists a few state titles here. Cake (talk) 06:38, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

VMI

Understand your point on the Military Classic of the South. Made a revised edit which highlights how different the schools are in a much more neutral manner. Cited Jeff Hartsell's article about Citadel civilians playing on Citadel sports teams and how much of a contrast it is for the nearly 4,000 civilian students/cadets from Citadel to be playing the very old fashioned VMI which has 1,500 cadets. Hartsell also pointed out that while the schools may have been similar at one point, the schools are very different today. Strgzr1 (talk)

Yale football season articles

Billcasey905, thanks for your recent work to stub out all those Yale football season articles. A few style points:

  • In the Champion field of infobox, we don't wikilink the conference, because it's always wikilinked in the Conference field. Also "champion" should be singular and not capitalized.
  • If there are no relevant rankings to populate in the schedule table, the column and related footer notation should be hidden.
  • Also be sure that the non-conference game indicator is not hidden if its relevant.

Take a look at my edits to 1974 Yale Bulldogs football team on these points.

West Chester Golden Rams baseball

Hey there, Bill...I wasn't quite sure what to do about WCGR baseball considering it was initially a redirect. In retrospect, not much has changed during that year+, so I'm thinking it should probably stay a redirect until some sign of expansion work begins...including the creation of a TP for the article. Your thoughts? Atsme📞📧 17:09, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi Atsme, I think someone may be in the process of expanding the page, particularly in light of their National Championship in 2017. I think we should give them a little time to see if they add some additional text - I would think information on the two national championships should be relatively easy to find in third party sources since they're both pretty recent, but it's a bit more than I'm ready to bite off for myself right now. If more well-sourced substance isn't added in the next few days, I'd have no objection to restoring it to a redirect. Billcasey905 (talk) 17:14, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi Corky, I know he's leaving The Citadel on December 15, but reports from El Paso seem to indicate he's splitting time until then. Hi, Bill. Could you please let me know what you are planning to do with the page 1982 AIAW Women's College World Series? Jeff in CA (talk) 14:35, 28 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi Jeff, all I did was make it so that the bracket could be transcluded to a new page - 1982 college softball season. This way, the bracket appears in the same way on the new page. That's done now. I haven't spent a lot of time on the page, but I'm not planning any other changes. Billcasey905 (talk) 14:39, 28 May 2018 (UTC)

Nowrap

Hi, I saw that you moved the {{nowrap end}} in several templates such as Template:2018 Pac-12 Conference baseball standings and Template:2018 Southeastern Conference baseball standings. Moving it to where you did causes errors with the new HTML parser that Wikipedia started using earlier this month. As you saw, I updated Template:CBSB Standings Entry so that it will work correctly with the {{nowrap end}} as part of the first parameter.

Is there ever a situation in which you would want that text to wrap, or would it be better to include the nowrap statement directly within Template:CBSB Standings Entry? --Ahecht (TALK

SIAA baseball champions

Thanks for helping me as I claw through the early history of the SIAA. Clemson had some strong teams when Heisman was there, but I cannot find anything showing they claimed a title, and the football champions drown out most searches. Heisman claimed some six-way tie in 1907, noting Vanderbilt's season may look best on paper. They were swept by Alabama though. The media guides show strong seasons for both, as well as for Trinity. The Vanderbilt quarterly notes they had one good pitcher but otherwise the season was not as good as it should have been. Yet to find an SIAA title for Auburn or Tennessee. Cake (talk) 09:18, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

You're doing most of the work - I'm just trying to flesh out the category trees and seasons for the ones you've created. I definitely appreciate your work on early baseball, which is very lightly covered here otherwise. Clemson occasionally publishes info on historical baseball seasons in their alumni and booster newsletters that some of my family members receive. If I find anything worthwhile I'll send it your way. Never use self-published sources about a living person unless written or published by the subject; see WP:BLPSPS and WP:BLPSELFPUB.

Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced must be removed immediately from the article and its talk page, especially if potentially libellous. But should not the entire earlier edits be reinstated? benprather has produced zero evidence of this claim of 'slander,' or anything to support his assertion of a 'university study' that he references. Meanwhile, there are tons of legimate sources stating the reason behind Mr. Goff's termination.

I've expanded the article. It turns out there was much more to him than simply baseball.Zigzig20s (talk) 07:13, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

Glad to hear it. I disagreed with the deletion, although I missed the discussion. Thanks again! Billcasey905 (talk) 07:14, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

NCAA baseball Fields/Stadiums question

So as I've come across lots of different teams while working on CWS Runners-up, I've noticed that teams have played at a "Field" from several years before the respective schools built a stadium at the field. Lots of the articles list the the erection date of the stadium as the first day of play at the field, but the teams might have played on that same patch of field for several years before then. Is there a change that should be made there or should I just list the fields without a link? Thanks DMC511 (talk) 22:21, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

I've mostly just listed the name of the field and left it as a red link, or create a redirect to the stadium that later was built on the site. Sometimes, we can find enough information to merit a standalone article, but more often it winds up just being a paragraph on the page for the later (and clearly notable) stadium, and so the redirect makes more sense. I'd defer to your judgment on this based on what you're finding. We can always edit later based on what we find. Billcasey905 (talk) 11:15, 13 April 2019 (UTC)

2019 US Banknote Contest

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

New England Conference

Hi - I was referred to discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College football/Archive 22#Northeastern University - were they an Independent, or in the New England Conference? by another editor, as I've been building out some pages for the UNH Wildcats of the 1940s. I have concern about marking champions of the New England Conference in the season-by-season templates, such as Template:1944 New England Conference football standings. I wanted to reach out to you, as I have yet to find a reliable source showing that the New England Conference recognized or named football champions. Also, neither UNH (here, pages 72–73) or Maine (here, page 86) make any mention of New England Conference championships in their season-by-season histories. Given the impact of World War II on college football schedules, marking champions for the 1941 through 1945 seasons is especially tenuous. So, I wanted to check with you, as it seems you've done a chunk of work on this topic (which is appreciated). Thanks. Dmoore5556 (talk) 00:07, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

Quick update—I just found this article from December 1946 when the Yankee Conference was being established; note that it ends with "broadened by provisions for championship selection". Which implies its forerunner (the New England Conference) did not select champions. Dmoore5556 (talk) 00:36, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
Fair enough. I did a lot of my digging in the yearbooks of the schools involved. It might be worth a look there - all of them are online. I also remember finding some other things, like old newspaper clippings. It's been a while for me and I'm in the midst of several other projects right now, but I'll try to help if I can. Billcasey905 (talk) 04:01, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, and I'll be happy to help out as well. I've reviewed the annual guides / media guides of Maine and UNH so far, and I have a newspapers.com account, which is always quite helpful. So far, I'm not seeing any indication that the conference named / awarded football champions. I'm thinking I can next take a look at the annual guides / Media Guides of the other schools who were members of the conference. Sound like a reasonable path to go down? Thanks. Dmoore5556 (talk) 05:21, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
Update — still a work in progress; I found a fairly definitive and interesting newspaper report from the Hartford Courant in October 1925, see here. Directly says "no 'championship' shall be awarded" in the conference. It was said in the context of contemplating which team in the conference is best, and later in the season a different newspaper considers New Hampshire to be worthy of the "conference crown" here. This adds up to there being no championship created or awarded by the conference, but rather members of media designating champions (as was the case for decades with a Division I national champion). At some point, doing that for NEC fell out of favor, as I've not seen any media references to conference champions in the 1940s. I'll look at late 1920s and 1930s next. Dmoore5556 (talk) 08:28, 16 December 2019 (UTC)
Good find. I'm wondering if this is more widespread than just the New England Conference. How we handle in templates and lists of championships may have impacts for other conferences too. This may be something to raise in WP:CFB so there's a consensus. Billcasey905 (talk) 16:00, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

Clemson Baseball

Hi Billycasey905. I noticed that you created the 2010-2019 page for Clemson Tigers Baseball. I think we've chatted before, and I've kept up the Clemson baseball page for the past 2 seasons, and I plan to do it again. The point of this note is to ask you to not create a 2020-2029 page.  :) I'll plan on doing them year by year as some other teams do. Just wanted to try to catch you before you created another decade page. I'll probably get around to creating the 2020 page here soon. Cheers! Swimmer33 (talk) 19:54, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi Swimmer33, I wasn't planning on creating another decade page for current seasons. For historical ones, though, I'll keep doing that. We've run into notability issues with college baseball seasons in the past, and WP:Baseball wanted us to use decade summaries for non-CWS seasons. That was a few years ago now, though, so I think we can take our chances again. I'll leave the current Clemson pages to you, thanks! Billcasey905 (talk) 20:20, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
I understand the notability issues. I've done a lot of college soccer and I run into them there, but I think its mostly resolved now.Swimmer33 (talk) 21:02, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

Article issues

Hello Billcasey905;
I perform random maintenance (among a varied list of things) and some of the below listed articles show up on pages like Category:Articles lacking sources from June 2017. Just one month is indicative of a large backlog. I did not look to see who the authors were but just on one that led me here. I see that you are active so I would rather make contact than go off on some "crusade" like mass tagging. I am a fan that Wikipedia has steadily increased in reliability, all the while controversially being predicted as going to fail, so any help would certainly be appreciated.
At present this a mind picking session and hopefully a form of preventive action contact. I have ran across several stub articles that have a shared concern that revolves around the above discussion (Clemson Baseball) regarding notability. An editor asked you not to create decade summaries style articles (or at least one in particular) but I can easily see why WP: Baseball wants them used. In other areas we generally use a "beginning" article (parent) and expand as content is added. This tends to make one inclusive article as opposed to many short articles that will likely become "career stubs". Your intentions may be future expansions and I have no problem with that. You are a self proclaimed fan and that is not a bad thing unless it just translates to creating many unsourced stubs. This does not end up a net positive if the articles get systematically deleted over time.
The above discussed "notability" issues can be at least minimized by some sourcing. I realize the "battle" concerning sourcing on an article as opposed to "availability of sources" but I frequent AFD and articles that have been around a long time end up being deleted because of sourcing issues. My reasoning is my horrible success rate at AFD. Some are considered "inclusionists", some "deletionists", but I opt for a third "inclusionist according to policies and guidelines". I agree there is unlimited space for "the sum of all human knowledge" but the policy on no original research, as well as the fundamental principles of the five pillars that also includes (among other things) verifiability, does indicate unsourced articles need attention or may end up deleted.
The unsourced 1902 Kansas State Aggies football team does not appear to be about a team but just a wrongly titled yearly score card stub.
The article 1950 Tufts Jumbos baseball team is referenced and seems appropriately titled as the content includes information about "the team". Any addition of scores would not be just an article with a "stat or schedule" listing. The article 1963 in Norwegian football is for more in-depth (larger) and equally unsourced. I could not only argue the WP:OR aspect but also synthesis with so much unsourced content. The title does appear to be appropriate for inclusion of all content concerning that year.
The article 1929 Connecticut Aggies football team is sourced but the present content of only just a particular years "schedule" seems to indicate that the title might be better at "1929 Connecticut Aggies football season", something equivalent or in another article, so as not to be considered an indiscriminate collection of material.
I am all for historical articles but at present I could argue that the creation of some of the articles in the category seems to go against "What Wikipedia is not". Thanks, Otr500 (talk) 10:43, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
@Otr500: what do you think is "wrongly titled" about 1902 Kansas State Aggies football team? Jweiss11 (talk) 20:01, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
Hello Cbl62 and Jweiss11. Merry Christmas and thanks. I am a big history buff and with some of the referencing and looking at other articles can wrap my head around the rationale to the stubs. When I first started looking at some of the stubs I continually ran across very little content with the season schedule. These do give the appearance that the article is about the season and not the particular teams. I ran across 2001 Penn Quakers football team that does have a team roster. To me, the team roster addition gives a more clear direction of an article about a "team" over just a teams "season" listing, like the categories reflect, and a direction in line with the title when such stubs are expanded. I would think that on these articles the team roster would seem better suited above the season but I will post that there for your comments. Otr500 (talk) 10:11, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
  • Note: I had also ran across articles titled like Dartmouth Big Green football and with the others mainly just the schedule listing it had seemed that was a better type title but I can also see that when adding the team roster it can be more concise with team included.
Thanks for the note Otr500, I take your point on these needing expansion, and in many cases additional sources. I do have that on my list of projects for the ones you referenced that I created (UConn and Yale) as well as other sports that I'm working on. Merry Christmas to you as well. Billcasey905 (talk) 18:21, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
Thanks all, and if I run across any and I have concerns or questions I will just drop a note. The one main thing is that there are active editors.

Otr500, you seem to be drawing a distinction between "team" and "season" that I don't think is useful or meaningful. 1902 Kansas State Aggies football team and 1902 Kansas State Aggies football season, were it to exist, would be about the same subject, the 1902 iteration of the Kansas State Wildcats football program. Note that our convention is to name such single-season articles for American college sports programs with "team", even though the categories that contain them use "seasons". This is in contrast to the naming convention for professional sports teams, both American and otherwise, whose single-season articles use "season", e.g. 1985 Chicago Bears season, 1977–78 Manchester United F.C. season. Maybe it was a mistake to use "team" for American college sports, but, if so, that was a mistake made over a decade ago and one that has been rolled out to over 10,000 articles. It would be quite the onerous task to rename all of them and do the associated clean-up. Perhaps, it should still be done? Whatever the case, when you encounter a stub with not much more than a listing of the season's schedule, the article is still about the team. It's just underdeveloped. As for the organization of topics within these articles, the team's schedule is surely of more importance than the team's roster, and should appear higher up in article. As Cbl62 and I have discussed in the past, we both believe the schedule table should appear as the first section of the body, immediately following the lead. I consider these tables to be, more or less, adjunct companions to the infobox. Jweiss11 (talk) 23:14, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
