Template:Cbb link
This template is used on approximately 9,800 pages and changes may be widely noticed. Test changes in the template's /sandbox or /testcases subpages, or in your own user subpage. Consider discussing changes on the talk page before implementing them. |
Due to a server limit of 500 "expensive parser function" calls (e.g. #ifexist:, PAGESIZE:, and PAGESINCATEGORY:), this template will only work properly if the page using it has not already exceeded the limit. When the limit is exceeded, the page using this template or module is categorised in Category:Pages with too many expensive parser function calls. (further information) |
This template will allow you to link to a college basketball team page that may not yet exist. It will display the best available link.
For example, if I want to link to the article about the 2010–11 Richmond Spiders men's basketball team that may or may not exist, I would make this call:
{{cbb link|2010|sex=men|team=Richmond Spiders|school=University of Richmond|title=Richmond}}
This would yield: Richmond
Important - whitespace cannot be included or it will be added to the wiki link and it will not function properly. Also, please use an en dash as the year separator.
Parameters
parameter | meaning |
---|---|
year or 1= (optional) | Supply a year if you want to link to the yearly page, e.g., 2006 for the 2006–07 Virginia Tech Hokies men's basketball team article; use the year the season began as the template will calculate the ending year. (The form 2009–10 is still supported for legacy purposes, but the template only reads the first four digits.)
|
sex | men or women or none - defaults to men |
team | The athletics program article for this school, e.g., Virginia Tech Hokies, Wake Forest Demon Deacons, Miami Hurricanes, etc. For schools that add "Lady" to the name of their women's teams (e.g., Hampton Lady Pirates) and have both names in the athletics program article (e.g., Hampton Pirates and Lady Pirates), it can be necessary to include only the women's team name in this parameter in order for the template to yield the expected result. (In this case, also omit the "sex" parameter.) |
school | The main article for this school, e.g., Florida State University, University of Virginia |
title (optional) | The display name for this link. Usually, this will be the common name for the school (without "university"), like Duke, Florida State, Virginia Tech, etc. If left blank, the link will be non-piped, i.e., it will display the name of the article linked to. |
Examples
{{cbb link|2006|sex=men|team=Virginia Tech Hokies|school=Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University|title=Virginia Tech}} | Virginia Tech |
{{cbb link|2006|team=Virginia Tech Hokies|sex=women|school=Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University|title=Virginia Tech}} | Virginia Tech |
{{cbb link|team=Florida State Seminoles|sex=men|school=Florida State University|title=FSU}} | FSU |
{{cbb link|1942|sex=none|team=Wyoming Cowboys|title=Wyoming}} | Wyoming |
When the template should not be used
To help limit the calls to #ifexist, it is strongly recommended that a direct link be used for specific team season articles instead of this template. Thus,
{{cbb link|2007|team=Kansas Jayhawks|school=University of Kansas|title=Kansas}}
should be changed to
[[2007–08 Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball team|Kansas]]
once that page is written. Templates used in cases such as this are listed at Category:Excessive uses of cbb link and should be changed as described.
