Under construction
[edit]As you can tell, this page is still under construction. I'm basically writing the thing from scratch, and it's sort of on hold for the moment. Still technically in the works though. Just thought I'd offer some sort of explanation for the emptiness since Seancp added a link from the CSULB article and added it to the college baseball project. --Foolishgrunt (talk) 17:34, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
- Looks like its going to be an excellent article! If you need some ideas or assistance then come on over to the college baseball project. Also, here are probably the two best college baseball team articles on Wikipedia in case you were looking for some ideas: Miami Hurricanes baseball and LSU Tigers baseball. Also check out: Wikipedia:WikiProject College baseball/Articles for a more thorough list. Seancp (talk) 17:57, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
Biggest single-season turnaround?
[edit]I'm thinking the Dirtbags' turnaround of 14-45 in '88 to 50-15 in '89 stands a good chance to be the biggest single-season turnaround in NCAA baseball history, but I can't prove it and I don't know where to find that kind of information. Numerous Google searches turned up no relevant information, at least in the realm in college baseball. If anybody can point me in the right direction, I'd be glad for the help.--Foolishgrunt (talk) 06:45, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
FWIW, ESPN.com has a piece on the Dirtbags and how they came to be. Article might confirm your assertion about the 14-45 to 50-15 turnaround. Article also states that "Dirtbags" is the official name of the team now.

Official vs. Common nickname
[edit]@Jweiss11, MisterCake, Billcasey905, Rikster2, Ejgreen77, Bagumba, and Jrcla2: You are all being pinged due to your experience. I've already talked with DL.
The team is referred to as the "Dirtbags" [1] however, the official name, and as the rest of the athletic dept. goes by, is the Long Beach State 49ers. So, should we go by the official name (49ers) or should we keep them as the Dirtbags? "Dirtbags" may be the more WP:COMMONNAME, but I'm thinking that official name should be used. I don't know much about this topic so that is why the discussion has been started. Corkythehornetfan 20:01, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
- Keep Dirtbags as nickname – There was a short, ill-participated in discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College baseball/Archive 3#Long Beach State Dirtbags baseball? where another active college baseball editor supported Dirtbags. I have to agree that this is a one-off instance where Dirtbags should be used. Just because the rest of the athletic department goes by one name does not necessitate this particular team follow suit. Common name should prevail above official name (which is why WP:COMMONNAME exists, and is also why you will find BYU Cougars instead of Brigham Young University Cougars). Jrcla2 (talk) 20:08, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
- Dirtbags this certainly seems to be the common name for baseball. Just to be clear, other sports (like basketball) use "49ers." Rikster2 (talk) 20:21, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
- Comment Not sure what I can contribute as far as policy, all I can say is I never heard them called the Dirtbags, which is humorous. Cake (talk) 21:24, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
- Comment This 2013 ESPN article says "the baseball team's nickname officially is Dirtbags (while every other school team is the 49ers." That being said, we go by WP:COMMONNAME, which I'll leave for others to comment.—Bagumba (talk) 21:38, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for y'all's input! Dirtbags it is! Corkythehornetfan 22:46, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
- Dirtbags - This is also similar to Murray State, which uses Thoroughbreds for the baseball team and most media outlets use those names as well from what I've seen. It is in contrast to the alternative names such as "DiamondDogs" which are common to many programs and even "Diamondhogs" at Arkansas that seems to be just an alternate and is generally not used by broader media unless they've already established the more common nickname for the program. Billcasey905 (talk) 02:12, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
- Comment Generally speaking, Billcasey905 and Kithira are the two best and most knowledgeable college baseball editors I have run across on this site, so as far as I'm concerned, for something like this, whatever those two guys say, goes. Ejgreen77 (talk) 11:05, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
- I appreciate the kind words. I still hope people will check things out as well, I've been wrong before and I certainly will be again. Billcasey905 (talk) 13:31, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
I realize I'm late to this conversation, but since the article name has been changed to "Long Beach State Dirtbags baseball," I wonder if it should be changed to just "Long Beach State Dirtbags." Since no other Long Beach State team goes by "Dirtbags," it seems unnecessary to clarify that it's the baseball team. Any thoughts @Corkythehornetfan: Foolishgrunt (talk) 17:23, 29 June 2017 (UTC)
Article shortcomings
[edit]There is a serious lack of references and much of the article smacks of original research.
- I'm aware of that, the vast majority of this article was written by me. And it was almost all done in a few spurts of zealous inspiration to make sure that my Alma Mater had an article worthy of the team, which as you know isn't the best way to keep an article free of original research or bias. In a few more spurts of inspiration I've been going back and removing biased material and adding external sources, but I'm essentially the only author and don't have much time to work on this, so it'll likely be in limbo for a while.
