Content splits do not require discussion
[edit]Regarding your revert of a user splitting off Chappell Roan's discography to its own article, WP:SPLIT acknowledges that users can make WP:BOLD splits and even says, "If an article meets the criteria for splitting and no discussion is required, editors can be bold and carry out the split." While she is popular, Chappell Roan is not particularly "high profile" nor a "sensitive" article, and these sorts of discography-section splits are carried out all the time without the need for discussions being started on whether there's consensus for them. I don't think your revert was necessary, nor that a discussion needs to take place. The split will inevitably happen anyway. Ss112 13:27, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Ss112 thanks for leaving the message. Perhaps this is a philosophical disagreement about the purpose of discography pages, but I do still see them as flowing from the policies of WP:SIZESPLIT and WP:CONTENTSPLIT. The Roan page is nowhere near big enough to become a SIZESPLIT, and when she only has one album, what is the CONTENTSPLIT? The chart position of the singles is the only remotely meaningful content that isn't/shouldn't be covered on the Roan or Rise and Fall pages. I know that a discog page will happen (justifiably, for navigation reasons) the moment she releases a second project, but to me, it so clearly serves our readers better to have the relevant information in one place while that's possible. Plus, for a category of content that inevitably attracts fancruft, it's a lot easier for editors to keep an eye on it when it's on one page. Just my 2c. Alyo (chat·edits) 16:46, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
Question from Loi Van Nguyen (10:32, 16 September 2024)
[edit]What is this question Legionnaires disease. Please --Loi Van Nguyen (talk) 10:32, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Loi Van Nguyen, I can only answer questions about editing Wikipedia. Alyo (chat·edits) 10:59, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
Hi Alyo! I am just starting my Wikipedia editing experience. I want to start writing articles about cell therapy and the more recent findings that the field has accomplished --- including the scientists behind them (and how they got to their discoveries). I'm trying to figure out where exactly I can start to do this --- I haven't read through all the tutorials yet but I figured it would be more efficient if I ask you first. --R3000.tmc (talk) 03:16, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @R3000.tmc, welcome to Wikipedia! I'm going to assume, based on the field you're interested, that you're already somewhat familiar with issues of coverage in academia. On Wikipedia, the issue we have is that scientists--even particularly notable ones--often have very little coverage about them in reliable, third-party sources, which is what is generally required. Because of that, start with WP:NSCIENTIST, and see if the people you're thinking of meet at least one of those criteria. If so, I would then go to the WP:Article wizard, which guides you through the basic technical steps of actually creating an article. Let me know if that makes sense so far, and if I can help with any next steps. Alyo (chat·edits) 21:21, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
- Okay great, thanks Alyo. I will check these out. R3000.tmc (talk) 21:26, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
Hello! Please edit the Result box in the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Hungarian_parliamentary_election page. The problem is, that the got numbers of Independent candidates is missing. They got 28.416 votes and the number of constituency is 5.440.483 altogether. Percentages are also needed to be changed. Thank You! --Adam Tari (talk) 17:20, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Adam Tari, because I know nothing about this topic I have to default to what the sources say, and I don't see anything that lists 28,416 votes for independent candidates. (To be clear, I also don't speak Hungarian.) Can you provide a source for this? Alyo (chat·edits) 01:30, 30 September 2024 (UTC)
- Within the list of egyéni választókerületek eredményei: https://vtr.valasztas.hu/ogy2022 Adam Tari (talk) 14:25, 30 September 2024 (UTC)
- Add the got votes of all single Independets according to this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Hungarian_parliamentary_election_results_by_constituency Adam Tari (talk) 14:27, 30 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Adam Tari I'm sure I'm looking at the wrong thing, but I still don't see that anywhere. Is there any reason you can't add this yourself to the page? Alyo (chat·edits) 15:24, 30 September 2024 (UTC)
- Yes. Because the numbers are add by the system. Adam Tari (talk) 19:20, 30 September 2024 (UTC)
- what system? Alyo (chat·edits) 21:38, 30 September 2024 (UTC)
- the online calculator, no? Adam Tari (talk) 07:50, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
- There's no online calculator in Wikipedia, those numbers are manually added by editors into a table that you can see when you're in edit mode. Alyo (chat·edits) 14:25, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
- So that's why edit it, what I asked you! Adam Tari (talk) 09:15, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
- Do you have a Hungarian collegaue? If yes, please contact me to him/her! Adam Tari (talk) 13:14, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hah, fair enough. Well, looking at the editors who are in WP:WikiProject Hungarian culture and WP:WikiProject Hungary, you might try @Alensha, @Eino81, @Ineuw, @Norden1990, or @OrionNimrod. Alyo (chat·edits) 14:50, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not sure I understand what you mean by independent candidates in this election, but the numbers match the ones in the Hungarian wiki article. Please come over to Hungarian Wikipedia, if you bring sources we can update the numbers there and I'll update them here too. – Alensha talk 16:50, 3 October 2024 (UTC)

Hello,
How can i upload essential references onto wikipedia? --UserSewey (talk) 22:13, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @UserSewey, what do you mean? We don't usually "upload" references onto wikipedia--we just link to them. Do you mean that you have books or other physical sources that you want to reference? Alyo (chat·edits) 03:38, 2 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from AliyahVas2016 (17:51, 4 October 2024)
[edit]Hey! I want to make an article but I don’t know how! Can you teach me? --AliyahVas2016 (talk) 17:51, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @AliyahVas2016, welcome to wikipedia! What are you trying to write about? You can use the WP:Article Wizard, which will guide you through the process of starting a new page, but please note that Wikipedia is not for promotion, and the article will only be accepted if you include multiple independent sources discussing the topic in some detail. For example, magazine profiles or newspapers would work. However, links to social media or blogs will not be enough. Alyo (chat·edits) 18:42, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- I’m looking to write about a small YouTuber, tiktoker, singer and context creator and I know a lot about her from personal knowledge. AliyahVas2016 (talk) 03:10, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- @AliyahVas2016 as a general rule, personal knowledge is not allowed as a "source" on wikipedia. After all, I and other editors cannot verify that in any way. We need information that is supported by reliable, third party sources. If you don't have a couple of those sources about the content creator, I'm sorry to say that the article is very unlikely to be accepted. Alyo (chat·edits) 04:01, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- She has posted information about herself online so would that be considered a third party source? AliyahVas2016 (talk) 04:23, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- No, I'm sorry, it would need to be material that other people have written about her. And in general this means, for example, news articles, magazines profiles, newspaper stories, etc. Not just press releases or blog discussions. Alyo (chat·edits) 04:25, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- Oh ok but how do I write an article anyways? AliyahVas2016 (talk) 19:30, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- You take content, say, what you've written on your talk page about "Bree Moore", and you add sources to it. If you don't add sources, then the article will get deleted pretty quickly, for the reasons I explained above. Alyo (chat·edits) 20:25, 5 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from SHELLMOONANDLOON (14:27, 6 October 2024)
[edit]how do i switch to the visual editor --SHELLMOONANDLOON (talk) 14:27, 6 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @SHELLMOONANDLOON, since you're a new editor, visual editor should be enabled by default. Have you had any issues with it yet? Alyo (chat·edits) 14:34, 6 October 2024 (UTC)

Showing leadership
[edit]Firstly, I wanted to thank you for showing leadership and guidance. I believe it is important for any voluntary position, that the volunteer feels that efforts are acknowledged and that our time is valued. It is also important that we all speak with integrity and respecting our dignity.
Secondly, I am very keen to learn and was wondering if you were part of the adoption programme. I am also stuck with the process of editing a page so that a tag is removed. Despite my efforts there seem to be some strong feelings from another editor. I hope that this will be resolved but your help will be much appreciated as a more experienced editor. Thank you in advance. Cleverboy inn (talk) 14:50, 6 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Cleverboy inn, I appreciate the comments. I'm not formally part of the adoption program, and I don't have any sort of curriculum or training program like some others have, but I'm happy to be an informal mentor and for you to reach out as often as you need. Re:the tag, which page are you talking about? Alyo (chat·edits) 13:15, 7 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @AlyoI appreciate your offer to be an informal editor. I am very keen to learn and promise not to overburden you. I have been having troubles editing two biographies of living authors. The issue started with Theo Gavrielides This page was edited several times by different users in the last year and since April there has been a tag. A consistent editor has been @MrOllie I tried to improve the page and to remove the tag but @MrOllie believes that it is not improved and he added a new tag. Similarly to this (but the other way round) I followed @MrOllie guidance that we should not reference the place of work for the subjects and that only independent links should be added. I tried to edit Thomas Trenczek but another user @Atlantic306 said that I should not have removed the websites of the place where he works as they are allowed! Which one is it?
- I will try and edit Theo Gavrielides using information from the original page that was accepted and then deleted by @MrOllie and follow the guidance again. If you could step in to bring clarity for me and other users that would be great. Many thanks in advance. Cleverboy inn (talk) 04:43, 11 October 2024 (UTC)

Tech News: 2024-43
[edit]Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Weekly highlight
- The Mobile Apps team has released an update to the iOS app's navigation, and it is now available in the latest App store version. The team added a new Profile menu that allows for easy access to editor features like Notifications and Watchlist from the Article view, and brings the "Donate" button into a more accessible place for users who are reading an article. This is the first phase of a larger planned navigation refresh to help the iOS app transition from a primarily reader-focused app, to an app that fully supports reading and editing. The Wikimedia Foundation has added more editing features and support for on-wiki communication based on volunteer requests in recent years.
Updates for editors
- Wikipedia readers can now download a browser extension to experiment with some early ideas on potential features that recommend articles for further reading, automatically summarize articles, and improve search functionality. For more details and to stay updated, check out the Web team's Content Discovery Experiments page and subscribe to their newsletter.
- Later this month, logged-out editors of these 12 wikis will start to have temporary accounts created. The list may slightly change - some wikis may be removed but none will be added. Temporary account is a new type of user account. It enhances the logged-out editors' privacy and makes it easier for community members to communicate with them. If you maintain any tools, bots, or gadgets on these 12 wikis, and your software is using data about IP addresses or is available for logged-out users, please check if it needs to be updated to work with temporary accounts. Guidance on how to update the code is available. Read more about the deployment plan across all wikis.
- View all 33 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, the South Ndebele, Pannonian Rusyn, Obolo, Iban and Tai Nüa Wikipedia languages were created last week. [1][2][3][4][5]
- It is now possible to create functions on Wikifunctions using Wikidata lexemes, through the new Wikidata lexeme type launched last week. When you go to one of these functions, the user interface provides a lexeme selector that helps you pick a lexeme from Wikidata that matches the word you type. After hitting run, your selected lexeme is retrieved from Wikidata, transformed into a Wikidata lexeme type, and passed into the selected function. Read more about this in the latest Wikifunctions newsletter.
Updates for technical contributors
- Users of the Wikimedia sites can now format dates more easily in different languages with the new
{{#timef:…}}
parser function. For example,{{#timef:now|date|en}}
will show as "6 November 2024". Previously,{{#time:…}}
could be used to format dates, but this required knowledge of the order of the time and date components and their intervening punctuation.#timef
(or#timefl
for local time) provides access to the standard date formats that MediaWiki uses in its user interface. This may help to simplify some templates on multi-lingual wikis like Commons and Meta. [6][7] - Commons and Meta users can now efficiently retrieve the user's language using
{{USERLANGUAGE}}
instead of using{{int:lang}}
. [8] - The Product and Tech Advisory Council (PTAC) now has its pilot members with representation across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and South America. They will work to address the Movement Strategy's Technology Council initiative of having a co-defined and more resilient technological platform. [9]
In depth
- The latest quarterly Growth newsletter is available. It includes: an upcoming Newcomer Homepage Community Updates module, new Community Configuration options, and details on new projects.
- The Wikimedia Foundation is now an official partner of the CVE program, which is an international effort to catalog publicly disclosed cybersecurity vulnerabilities. This partnership will allow the Security Team to instantly publish common vulnerabilities and exposures (CVE) records that are affecting MediaWiki core, extensions, and skins, along with any other code the Foundation is a steward of.
- The Community Wishlist is now testing machine translations for Wishlist content. Volunteers can now read machine-translated versions of wishes and dive into discussions even before translators arrive to translate content.
Meetings and events
- 24 October - Wiki Education Speaker Series Webinar - Open Source Tech: Building the Wiki Education Dashboard, featuring Wikimedia interns and a Web developer in the panel.
- 20–22 December 2024 - Indic Wikimedia Hackathon Bhubaneswar 2024 in Odisha, India. A hackathon for community members, including developers, designers and content editors, to build technical solutions that improve contributors' experiences.

Question from Elmas yildiz (22:58, 29 October 2024)
[edit]Hello, Alyo, I'm a Wikipedia editor of almost 4 years who recently returned to edit. I was wondering if you could give me any tips/advice on how to find pages to edit that are at my level of knowledge; A lot of the editing suggestions are on topics way more advanced than my current knowledge. Thank you! --Elmas yildiz (talk) 22:58, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Elmas yildiz, welcome (back) to Wikipedia! I assume you're talking about the suggestions on Special:Homepage? While that page can be helpful, I find myself editing more when I'm working on a topic I enjoy, or a task I find fun. That's where I would start for you--what are you interested in? When I first began here 15 years ago, I mostly edited articles about video games and sports, before eventually branching out. Alternatively, you could think about what type of task you enjoy. Do you like doing research and adding to existing articles? Or improving the prose of articles that are badly written? You can go to the Wikipedia:Task Center, which lists a series of tasks and then links to random articles that have issues in that task area. So the first task on that page, "Fact-Checking", has a link on the right side allowing you to "Go to a random page in Category:All articles lacking sources". If you wanted to find some articles that need additional research help, you could start there, or you could also click on the maintenance category, . This takes you to a hidden WP category containing every article that is currently tagged with the {{Unreferenced}} template. What would you like to work on? Question from Jason masena (03:44, 31 October 2024)
[edit]How do I create a citation --Jason masena (talk) 03:44, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Jason masena, when you are editing in the editing box, there's a tool called the "RefToolbal" built in that makes it very easy. You click the type of citation you want to create, and fill in the relevant information in the pop-up box. When you click submit, it will automatically insert the ref where your cursor was. See WP:INTREF3 for instructions and a video. Broadly speaking though, you enclose citations in "ref" tags like this:
<ref>...</ref>
. Whatever you put in between those tags will show up in the references section at the end of the article. Alyo (chat·edits) 15:59, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
