The New Page Patroller's Barnstar | ||
For over 100 article reviews during 2022. Thank you for patrolling new pages and helping us out with the backlog! -MPGuy2824 (talk) 04:05, 2 January 2023 (UTC) |
New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023
Hello Alyo,
- Backlog
The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.
- 2022 Awards
Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!
Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)
New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js
to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js
Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.
Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Question from FindingPeace (21:52, 5 January 2023)
An actor is mentioned on a wiki page for a series she is in. QUESTION: am I allowed to update her name with a hyperlink to her imdb site? This is the page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Life_Is_Murder This is the actor: Ebony Vagulans This is her imdb site. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm6032720/ --FindingPeace (talk) 21:52, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @FindingPeace, as a general rule we don't allow hyperlinks to outside sites on wikipedia. If Ebony is notable enough for her own wikipedia article, then that can be created. Otherwise, no. Alyo (chat·edits) 02:52, 14 January 2023 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can use tags to filter edits in the recent changes feed or on your watchlist. You can now use tags to filter out edits you don't want to see. Previously you could only use tags to focus on the edits with those tags. [1]
- Special:WhatLinksHere shows all pages that link to a specific page. There is now a prototype for how to sort those pages alphabetically. You can see the discussion in the Phabricator ticket.
- You can now use the thanks function on your watchlist and the user contribution page. [2]
- A wiki page can be moved to give it a new name. You can now get a dropdown menu with common reasons when you move a page. This is so you don't have to write the explanation every time. [3]
- Matrix is a chat tool. You can now use
matrix:
to create Matrix links on wiki pages. [4] - You can filter out translations when you look at the recent changes on multilingual wikis. This didn't hide translation pages. You can now also hide subpages which are translation pages. [5]

Question
Hi Alyo I was wondering your opinion on this, on the Michael Jackson article it states "From the late 1980s, Jackson became a figure of controversy" i believe is untrue, a figure of speculation yes, but not until 1993 did he really become a figure of controversy. What's your take Aaron106 (talk) 02:16, 19 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Aaron106 Hmm, I don't think it's necessarily a negative thing to say that he became a "figure of controversy" although maybe that's not the best word. Do you have another suggestion? Alyo (chat·edits) 04:30, 19 January 2023 (UTC)
- I think "from the late 1980s" statement is inaccurate. I would drop figure of controversy and just keep speculation unless it could be worded to figure of controversy around 1993. Aaron106 (talk) 04:38, 19 January 2023 (UTC)
- Ahh I see. I don't have very strong opinions about that. Alyo (chat·edits) 04:40, 19 January 2023 (UTC)

Question from Hoen1337 (20:56, 13 March 2023)
Hello i was wondering how to create a new page --Hoen1337 (talk) 20:56, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Hoen1337, you can use the WP:Article Wizard, which will guide you through the process of starting a new page, but please note that Wikipedia is not for promotion, and the article will only be accepted if you include multiple independent sources discussing the topic in some detail. For example, magazine profiles or music reviews would work. However, links to social media or blogs will not be enough. Alyo (chat·edits) 21:07, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
Question from Jan khalil mahmoudi on User talk:Jan khalil mahmoudi (21:25, 3 April 2023)
Hello, I am Khalil Ahmad Mahmoudi, a bachelor of law and political science from Herat, Afghanistan. For 2 years, from 2009 to 2011, I worked at Farid Rostgar Logistics Company, which had a contract with England, America, and NATO, in Boston Camp, and after that, I was reassigned. I was promoted to the rank of officer as an officer of the Ministry of Interior of Afghanistan in Herat province, as the deputy of the general management of the investigation of the fight against corruption and corruption, and I was assigned to different districts of Herat in the fight against terrorism, and I killed and arrested hundreds of Taliban. For 3 months in the special units of the Ministry of Interior in the 555th unit of Herat province, I performed 7 tasks in different districts with the Italian forces, and I worked in the family problem solving section of the police. I cooperated with human rights and civil rights organizations after the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban. The Taliban killed my brother, who was a police officer in the terrorism department, and hanged some of my colleagues, which you learned through the media. My house was searched by the Taliban, and I, along with my wife and three children, were smuggled to Pakistan on 9/6/1400. And I fled from Pakistan to Iran Now I live in a bad human and economic situation in Iran and every moment I am afraid of being deported by the Iranian government. With the experience and study that I have from Afghanistan and Islam, all the miseries of my life are due to the influence of Islam, Islam is a source of power for the Arabs, and there is no such thing as humanity in Islam and Afghanistan. All my life is in fear, killing and terror. I request you to save my documents and my work record and my family from this hell. This act of philanthropy is not unlikely from you. With respect --Jan khalil mahmoudi (talk) 21:25, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
- Hello @Jan khalil mahmoudi, I'm very sorry, but this isn't the right place to go. Wikipedia is not a data archive or a site for investigative journalism. You may looking for a human rights organization. Alyo (chat·edits) 15:51, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi Alyo, I have nominated Humanism once more for GA. I would feel more comfortable if you stay around, you know, with copy edits, suggestions etc. Cheers, Cinadon36 10:32, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Last week, Community Tech released the first update for providing better diffs, the #1 request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. This update adds legends and tooltips to inline diffs so that users unfamiliar with the blue and yellow highlights can better understand the type of edits made.
- When you close an image that is displayed via MediaViewer, it will now return to the wiki page instead of going back in your browser history. This feature request was voted #65 in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [20]
- The SyntaxHighlight extension now supports
wikitext
as a selected language. Old alternatives that were used to highlight wikitext, such ashtml5
,moin
, andhtml+handlebars
, can now be replaced. [21] - Preloading text to new pages/sections now supports preloading from localized MediaWiki interface messages. Here is an example at the Czech Wikipedia that uses
preload=MediaWiki:July
. [22]
Problems
- Graph Extension update: Foundation developers have completed upgrading the visualization software to Vega5. Existing community graphs based on Vega2 are no longer compatible. Communities need to update local graphs and templates, and shared lua modules like de:Modul:Graph. The Vega Porting guide provides the most comprehensive detail on migration from Vega2 and here is an example migration. Vega5 has currently just been enabled on mediawiki.org to provide a test environment for communities. [23]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 May. It will be on all wikis from 11 May (calendar).
- Until now, all new OAuth apps went through manual review. Starting this week, apps using identification-only or basic authorizations will not require review. [24]
Future changes
- During the next year, MediaWiki will stop using IP addresses to identify logged-out users, and will start automatically assigning unique temporary usernames. Read more at IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation/Updates. You can join the discussion about the format of the temporary usernames. [25]
- There will be an A/B test on 10 Wikipedias where the Vector 2022 skin is the default skin. Half of logged-in desktop users will see an interface where the different parts of the page are more clearly separated. You can read more. [26][27]
-
jquery.tipsy

Question from Niitwe (12:27, 3 June 2023)
Hello, Mentor!
There's a draft i've been working on. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Odrek_Rwabwogo). However, I have not submitted it yet. Can you read through and advise accordingly? --Niitwe (talk) 12:27, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Niitwe, our notability standards for people are located here. In addition, there are also some specific standards for certain types of people, such as politicians. However, broadly speaking people need to have been covered by multiple reliable secondary sources, discussing the subject in detail. Other types of sources can be used to fill in details, but only those independent reliable sources will help demonstrate notability. So Rwabwogo's website does not help demonstrate notability, but could be used for biographical details. The problem I see is that many of the sources in the article (hard rock media, nairobi news, flash ug news) do not appear to be reliable by our standards. They look more like blogs or news aggregators, which editors here will not accept. The Observer is a notable newspaper, but that piece is just a transcript of an interview, not a piece written about him. Four sources just cover his marriage anniversary which, while lovely, may not contribute to his notability--the articles aren't exactly covering him. This also applies to the piece about Rwabwogo's brother. Right now this means the sourcing is not sufficient, in my opinion. Alyo (chat·edits) 21:30, 4 June 2023 (UTC)
- Wonderful info and very helpful. I aprreciate the insight and advice and will get back to you after some edits and upgrades Niitwe (talk) 06:29, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Niitwe Glad to help! In particular, if there are any sources that discuss his political impact--mind you, not sources written by him--that would help significantly. Alyo (chat·edits) 13:49, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Alyo The newest draft with refined references and a new politics sub-section. Can you please advise accordingly? Niitwe (talk) 16:54, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
- It looks significantly better. Those sources you added are the kinds of sources I was talking about, and if you have any more like that you should add them. Otherwise, you can submit it through AfC. Alyo (chat·edits) 17:43, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
- Finally submitted. I couldn't have done it without your guidance!
- I appreciate Niitwe (talk) 18:25, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hey @Alyo. Unfortunately, Odrek Rwabwogo has been deleted by a certain administrator who also nominated it. Despite the majority opinions being against the action.
- What can we do? Niitwe (talk) 11:51, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Niitwe, I'll recreate the article and work on it here: User:Alyo/sandbox/Odrek Rwabwogo. It will probably end up being a little shorter, but it can be recreated at that point. If you want to help re-add any of the sources that were lost, do so at that draft. Alyo (chat·edits) 12:52, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks @Alyo! No problem about the length. It can grow over the years with input from different users. I will surely contribute and look for more notable sources. Niitwe (talk) 14:33, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023
Hello Alyo,
Backlog
Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.
Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.
WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.
Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.
You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.
Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

As a mentor and writer, you have really made my early experiences awesome through your guidance and support - on my first article, and many more to come (in case I'm not frustrated by some biased admins' attempts). Thanks a trillion. Niitwe (talk) 11:49, 14 July 2023 (UTC) |
- Thank you so much @Niitwe, happy to help :) And don't worry, it's not a reflection on you and has a lot more to do with admins dealing with years of badly-sourced articles and spam. We'll get this cleaned up in short order. Alyo (chat·edits) 12:56, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
Dude, didn't you notice that it was VEI 4? It is notable if its atleast VEI 4. Recheck the info of the eruption. VEI means how powerful the eruption was. PotassiumLover72 talk 14:58, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @PotassiumLover72, I'm admittedly unfamiliar with geologic notability guidelines, so can you point me to any discussions or policies backing that up? Happy to accept it if I'm wrong, but also the sourcing is objectively bad in its current state. Alyo (chat·edits) 15:40, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

Hello my new mentor! In looking up Karla DeVito, I noticed a note to the effect that the article needed some additional content, clarification and/or verification. As a personal fan of hers (see my edit to her article) as well as someone who worked with her, can you suggest other specifics I could seek to add to her article? --Obiwandb (talk) 13:50, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Obiwandb, welcome to wikipedia :) So that tag is actually pretty old--it was added back in 2016 when the article looked like this (notice how many fewer references there are). Since then the article has dramatically improved and you can probably remove that template if you'd like.
- As a general statement though, just know that wikipedia generally requires all content to be verifiable in reliable, independent sources. What that means here is two things: (1) a good way to improve nearly every article is to find coverage in newspapers, books, online media (not blogs!) etc, and add those sources to the article, and (2) your own personal knowledge is not considered a good source--even if you absolutely know something is true--if other editors cannot verify it in some way through other sources.
- To take a minor example that covers both of these, right now the article has a sentence that says
DeVito also contributed background vocals for some groups such as Blue Öyster Cult and the band Sorrows.
Even if you 100% knew through personal knowledge that this was true, other editors would be within their right to remove that sentence because it doesn't have a source attached. As a result, a good way to improve that article would be to find a source (DeVito biography? book about BÖC? news articles from the time?) and add it to DeVito's article. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions! Alyo (chat·edits) 14:07, 25 July 2023 (UTC)- Do you know how to get in touch with Karla either directly or through her manager? I have to assume that she will have a better memory of which sessions she sang on. Northern Recording Studios folded many decades ago, and there were minimal records of backup players in any case. Obiwandb (talk) 15:42, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
- It appears my entire paragraph was deleted very shortly after I posted it. So I assume there is no value to re-posting it unless Karla or someone else can back it up. Obiwandb (talk) 15:48, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Obiwandb Unfortunately no, wikipedia editors have no more ability to contact people than any other member of the general public. That's another reason why we much prefer to include content that can cite to independent sources, like music journalists or newspapers--even Karla herself wouldn't meet that. I hope you understand why wikipedia has to work this way, but someone's personal knowledge isn't a valid source, because, well, no one else can prove or disprove those statements. I see the paragraph that you added while I believe what you say is true, without some other source to back up the statement about her being a popular backup singer, it's not appropriate for wikipedia. You can also see the short note that the other editor left on your talk page: User talk:Obiwandb. Hope this makes sense! Alyo (chat·edits) 17:17, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
- But if there is mention in her published book or magazine stories, that would work? I think I am getting the idea.
- BTW: I personally think it is a half-baked idea. If I or anyone else with published valid credentials (i.e., all over most of the Recording Studio history sites AND discography sites.0 Ironically, I have 1 mention on Wikipedia due to my erstwhile friend Tom Scholz credited me on his album incorrectly as "Dave Butler". The folks who curate Dicogs.com have picked my brain and boiled ALL my AKAs to David 'db' Butler, my preferred ID. Would that serve as adequate backup for adding a footnote to Boston's credit that "Dave Butler" IS David 'db' Butler?
- Thanks,
- David Obiwandb (talk) 20:09, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
- Would a book or magazine with Reference to Karla work? Obiwandb (talk) 15:58, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Obiwandb --
But if there is mention in her published book or magazine stories, that would work?
-- that sounds more like it! Feel free to link me to anything first and I'll give you my thoughts on it as a source, but that's a good start. And Discogs is generally not considered reliable because it's user-generated, instead of going through any sort of editorial process. Alyo (chat·edits) 13:19, 29 July 2023 (UTC)

Question from OGJ12345 (16:17, 8 August 2023)
Hi Alyo!
I am publishing my first article soon on a well known Australian architect who I noticed had yet to have a page written for her. I've worked on it for a while now but do you think you could proof read to give it the best change of remaining up after publishing? Thanks and nice to meet you :) --OGJ12345 (talk) 16:17, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hello @OGJ12345, you're talking about User:OGJ12345/sandbox, right? Alyo (chat·edits) 17:57, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- @OGJ12345, I read over the article and the sources, and I don't think this article's subject is appropriate for wikipedia. I'll sort of skip over the fact that at present the article is far too promotional and looks more like a press release than a neutral encyclopedic article, and just explain how notability works on wikipedia. In general, topics become "notable" when they are covered by multiple independent, reliable sources that talking about the topic in some significant detail. Usually the rule of thumb is that you need 3+ of those types of sources to become notable. Right now, this article has zero. None of the sources connected to Ball (Woods Bagot itself, Melbourne SoD) are independent, but the sources that are independent don't really discuss Ball in any meaningful detail. Alyo (chat·edits) 18:17, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi again!
- This was such great feedback, I have made the changes I feel it was lacking and corrected my external sources as you said, ( awards and specific project articles which mention her by name as the principal architect). I also removed ones which were not correctly linked to any secondary external source. I have also tried to edit tone to remove any promotional language. Please let me know what you think of the article with these edits :) OGJ12345 (talk) 18:57, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hmm, it's better, but I still think it needs more sources that are specific to her. As an additional guide, take a look at WP:ARCHITECT, and especially the third and fourth prongs. I will say I'm obviously not very knowledgeable about architecture in specific, so I don't know how people are viewed within the industry, but to me she still seems to fall a little short of those guidelines. Question from User3456789123 (23:36, 13 August 2023)
Hi how do i prove that a source is biased and faulty and should not be used in article. --User3456789123 (talk) 23:36, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @User3456789123, for starters, you should present some other sources that differ with what you're disputing. However, the paragraph you posted at Talk:Rabia Balkhi isn't going to be enough--you can't just point at some comments someone has made and then claim that as proof for a different overriding ideology. A historian's comments about Israel cannot be taken as proof that they are misrepresenting an unrelated poet's background. Alyo (chat·edits) 01:27, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- It’s not unrelated though. He is an Arab nationalist claiming other historical figures in lands that Arabs invaded to be Arab. He did not just make comments about Israel. He has made false historical claims about Isreal out of his own nationalism and intolerance for non Arabs. There’s also been calls for him to be removed from Columbia university User3456789123 (talk) 01:35, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- I proved his Arab nationalism, obviously his claims that other people who live in lands uninhabited by Arabs is going to be biased. In the source there is no reference to any historical source. It says quote “it is said she comes from an Arab family” User3456789123 (talk) 01:40, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- @User3456789123, I'm sorry, but you fundamentally misunderstand the role of wikipedia editors. We do not "prove" anything. We find what reliable sources have said about a topic and write that. If you can find sources that indicate his apparent arab nationalism makes him unreliable in a larger sense, bring those forward. Otherwise other editors are going to treat you as someone who is ideologically driven and, well, they won't take you very seriously. And again, even if what you said in your first comment here is true, that still doesn't prove in any sense that he's lying about Balkhi's background. Alyo (chat·edits) 01:50, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- https://www.timesofisrael.com/columbia-u-alums-call-for-professor-to-be-suspended-over-anti-zionist-posts/ His false claims have led to calls for him to removed from Columbia university. Therefore undermining his credibility. You can find his own Arab nationalist statements here https://canarymission.org/professor/Hamid_Dabashi and here https://www.discoverthenetworks.org/individuals/hamid-dabashi/
- his claims have also been questioned in the past by academic journals undermining his credibility. https://www.telospress.com/the-vigilant-jew-as-an-annoyance-how-hamid-dabashi-misreads-adorno/ User3456789123 (talk) 01:55, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- Even after proving the claims of his arab nationalism and providing evidence other that academics have proved his claims to be uncredible, the moderator would not allow me to make my changes. User3456789123 (talk) 02:19, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- I repeat, you didn't "prove" anything. Critiquing israel is not automatically "arab nationalism". And as I said above,
even if what you said in your comment here is true, that still doesn't prove in any sense that he's lying about Balkhi's background.
You need to show other sources--not yourself--making that argument. Alyo (chat·edits) 02:32, 14 August 2023 (UTC)- I proved other academics find his claims uncredible. User3456789123 (talk) 02:34, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- No you didn't, you showed that a single German academic criticizes his reading of Adorno. And that a pro-Israel facebook group got upset at him. Neither of those things make his historical findings vis-à-vis Balkhi unreliable. Alyo (chat·edits) 02:42, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- https://nymag.com/nymetro/urban/education/features/10868/ The president of the university also says his claims are outrageous. The president Lee Bollinger said, "I want to completely disassociate myself from those ideas. They're outrageous things to say, in my view."
- also In The Bulletin, Herb Denenberg wrote that Dabashi's article "is not borderline racism. It's as gross and obvious as racism can get. User3456789123 (talk) 02:49, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- So if am a pro Italian nationalist who makes racist statements against non Italians, then I claim that a former historical figure from land that Italy colonized such as Ethiopia is an Italian. Without any historical evidence of this claim. And other academics have called me out for my Anti non Arab racism, that is ok? Tech News: 2023-35
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- As part of the changes for the better diff handling of paragraph splits, improved detection of splits is being rolled out. Over the last two weeks, we deployed this support to group0 and group1 wikis. This week it will be deployed to group2 wikis. [29]
- All Special:Contributions pages now show the user's local edit count and the account's creation date. [30]
- Wikisource users can now use the
prpbengalicurrency
label to denote Bengali currency characters as page numbers inside the<pagelist>
tag. [31] - Two preferences have been relocated. The preference "Enable the visual editor" is now shown on the "Editing" tab at all wikis. Previously it was shown on the "Beta features" tab at some wikis. The preference "Use the wikitext mode inside the visual editor, instead of a different wikitext editor" is now also shown on the "Editing" tab at all wikis, instead of the "Beta features" tab. [32][33]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 August. It will be on all wikis from 31 August (calendar).
- New signups for a Wikimedia developer account will start being pushed towards idm.wikimedia.org, rather than going via Wikitech. Further information about the new system is available.
- All right-to-left language wikis, plus Korean, Armenian, Ukrainian, Russian, and Bulgarian Wikipedias, will have a link in the sidebar that provides a short URL of that page, using the Wikimedia URL Shortener. This feature will come to more wikis in future weeks. [34]
Future changes
- The removal of the DoubleWiki extension is being discussed. This extension currently allows Wikisource users to view articles from multiple language versions side by side when the
<=>
symbol next to a specific language edition is selected. Comments on this are welcomed at the phabricator task. - A proposal has been made to merge the second hidden-categories list (which appears below the wikitext editing form) with the main list of categories (which is further down the page). More information is available on Phabricator; feedback is welcome!

Jono Macbeth
Hi there Alyo, Can you please tell me why you keep editing the Jono Macbeth Wikipedia page. I don't understand why you change it and also why you post in-correct details? Can you please explain
Kind regards Damian Richmond (talk) 12:27, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hello @Damian Richmond, sure. Wikipedia requires all content to be verifiable, usually by adding references to reliable sources. The content that you keep re-adding has no sources, and so by our policies, the entire thing can/should be removed. Instead, I keep reverting to an older version of the page that is much shorter, and has a couple sources. There are multiple other issues with some of the content block that you're talking about, but that's the key thing to start. What is incorrect in the version that I keep reverting to? Alyo (chat·edits) 13:19, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Alyo, I will gladly add the references. But the version you keep resubmitting claims Jono Macbeth was not retained by oracle racing and also left INEOS racing under dubious circumstances. These are both incorrect and give the impression of wrong doing.
- if you look through the history, you will see periodic editing of the transcript by people that is incorrect and in some cases defamatory. Damian Richmond (talk) 15:53, 19 September 2023 (UTC)
- That's fair, I've removed that line. Like I said, it's not so much that I'm "resubmitting" this content as I am undoing changes that go against policy. I don't really think that the version I've reverted to is particularly good, and to be quite honest I would vote to delete this article entirely based on the current sourcing (notwithstanding you hopefully improving it). New pages patrol newsletter
Hello Alyo,
Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!
October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.
PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.
Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.
Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.

how to add somethng in wikipedia --TiktokGlobal (talk) 16:43, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @TiktokGlobal, what are you looking to add? Anyone can edit existing pages--just click the "Edit" button at the top of the screen. If you're trying to create a new page, you can use the WP:Article Wizard, which will guide you through the process of starting a new page, but please note that Wikipedia is not for promotion, and the article will only be accepted if you include multiple independent sources discussing the topic in some detail. For example, newspapers, books, and journals would work. However, links to social media or blogs will not be enough. Alyo (chat·edits) 20:55, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
Valve templates
Hi, I was notified that you reverted my contribution to Template:Professional Counter-Strike competition -- as you did to CoolingGibbon's edit to Template:Valve, as well. What I disagree with above your reverts was that you asserted that consensus was reached at WikiProject Video games when it wasn't; we had a discussion at Talk:Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, where editors agreed that Counter-Strike 2 is an update to Global Offensive, but there wasn't consensus about it being a new game. I won't edit war, but I found that a little disingenuous, given that I've been heavily involved with the discussion. BOTTO (T•C) 01:13, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Botto, sorry for the delayed response. You're right--I misspoke on where that discussion happened, and while I still read a number of comments that appear to argue for CS2 being a whole different game, that conclusion wasn't in the scope of that discussion. However, I feel pretty strongly that abbreviating CS2 to "Global Offensive (2)" implies that CS2 is actually called CSGO 2, which obviously isn't correct? Happy to start a discussion anywhere you'd like, but regardless of the update/new game status, that just seems to be an issue of correctly identifying the property. I see that now you and Gibbon have further changed this, so it's probably a moot point by now. Alyo (chat·edits) 02:40, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

Question from Yassin Mokadem (21:37, 27 October 2023)
how many pages i should edit before creating my own page --Yassin Mokadem (talk) 21:37, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Yassin Mokadem, there’s no hard and fast rule. If you’re familiar with our policies, you could create a page right now. The WP:Article Wizard will guide you through the process of starting a new page, but note that Wikipedia is not for promotion, and the article will only be accepted if you include multiple independent sources discussing the topic in some detail. For example, newspapers, books, and journals would work. However, links to social media or blogs will not be enough. If you understand these rules, there’s nothing stopping you from creating a page. Question from Itsmeblondie90 (18:21, 2 November 2023)
I was working on a new article and when I went to try and add sources, I found all the work I had just done was deleted. How do I recover all that work? --Itsmeblondie90 (talk) 18:21, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello @Itsmeblondie90, what page were you working on? Were you working on another account, or without being logged in? I can't see any other edits in your history so I'm not sure what you're referring to. Alyo (chat·edits) 18:40, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
- The Murder of Rachel Morin. I ended up rewriting it but it has since been rejected. I am happy to work with making it better but this is my first time creating a Wiki article so I'd like to do it correctly but I am not surprised if I've neglected things more experienced publishers would know. Itsmeblondie90 (talk) 20:27, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Itsmeblondie90, you got some good advice from RickinBaltimore on your talk page, but I’ll add just a bit. There are obviously so many crimes that happen that WP cannot cover them all, and so WP:VICTIM requires some additional significant coverage to have an article about a victim. Furthermore, Wikipedia policies rule strongly against any sort of speculation about real events (especially those involving living people), meaning that WP is a particularly bad place to collect information about a crime, victims, possible perps, etc. Let me know if you have other questions, but the main thing you’re gonna want to add is coverage about the crime in reliable sources—not tabloids, not social media, etc. Alyo (chat·edits) 01:27, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yes he did give me good advice, as did you. Thank you. I'll do some digging and bring it up to snuff. Thank you for your help! 173.49.0.64 (talk) 01:30, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

Wikipedia Article publication
HI thank you for adding u as a mentor. I have drafted a article for wikipedia about a person who is well known in our province. He has significant coverage in print media daily. People need to know about him. But some people declining draft citing that person doesnot have significant coverage. But i have added the print media links as reference. And added our province highcourt name list. Abayan leo (talk) 16:11, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello @Abayan leo, the issue with Draft:Hasan Mohammed Jinnah is that right now, only this source and this source appear to discuss Jinnah in any real detail at all--the rest are all either by him, mention him in passing, or don't mention him at all. As a general rule, editors prefer to see three or more good, strong sources discussing a topic before creating an article, and here you have...one and a half? Because filmibeat does not appear to be a strong newspaper. Without stronger sources, it's very hard to get other editors to accept an article. You mention that he is covered in print media--which newspapers? Alyo (chat·edits) 17:16, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

- Hi @Stevewilcox2001, as a general rule, wikipedia policy strongly advises against writing about yourself. Please see this page for more information. Let me know if you have any questions. Alyo (chat·edits) 22:55, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
Question from Mimoza Dervishi (10:11, 16 November 2023)
I would like to create an article about my deceased father with information about all his education and the contribution he made to education in Shkoder, a city in Albania. in 2003 it was also decorated by the president with a high title Naim Frasheri i Arte --Mimoza Dervishi (talk) 10:11, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Mimoza Dervishi, please note that Wikipedia policy strongly advises against writing about your own family members--it creates a conflict of interest and a variety of other issues. You can start with the WP:Article Wizard, which will guide you through the process of starting a new page, but note that Wikipedia is not for promotion, and the article will only be accepted if you include multiple independent sources discussing the person in some detail. For example, newspapers, books, and journals would work. However, links to social media or blogs will not be enough. If you'd like, you can provide the sources here and I'll tell you if I think it's worth doing more work on. Alyo (chat·edits) 14:50, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Abayan leo (06:11, 30 November 2023)
Hello , I have made an article in name M. Karthikeyan. Im not sure whether it has been published or not. can you help me to find it. Thank you --Abayan leo (talk) 06:11, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello @Abayan leo, I think you figured this out by now, but the draft is at Draft:M. Karthikeyan and it has been correctly submitted to our review process. Alyo (chat·edits) 12:24, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah some what cleared. But it have already published someone again change it to draft. Abayan leo (talk) 12:31, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Abayan leo yes that's correct. Wikipedia has rules about what kinds of topics are allowed on the site. For example, articles are not supposed to be overly promotional, which is why your article was changed to a draft. I've also reviewed and declined the article, and I can explain more about why here. Wikipedia requires topics to be covered in significant detail by multiple sources. The sources you have right now are either written by Karthikeyan, or just mention Karthikeyan in very light detail. None of these help to demonstrate notability--they need to discuss Karthikeyan's life in detail. There need to be multiple paragraphs about him in these sources. Let me know if you have any questions, but I don't believe this topic will be appropriate for wikipedia. Alyo (chat·edits) 14:10, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- Book which he wrote was to the students preparing for the competetive exams. In the news article they have explained his role in multiple paragraph. He is a educator cum advocate in city. He also represented the government of states. He also represent the government of India in states for his profile of Government of India is cited. To put it this not a promotional content. A person who is educator in city and has written many books which will be usefull for the student community. Abayan leo (talk) 14:32, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Abayan leo Which news article are you talking about? All of those things are great, but you need sources that say that about him in detail, and I don't see that right now. Alyo (chat·edits) 14:38, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- I have cited near educator and educator section - In the toppers of civil service examination article they explained his role in mentoring the students for civil service examination. Abayan leo (talk) 15:01, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Abayan leo You're talking about these three links? The first is just a book listing--that's not significant coverage. The second has a quote by Karthikeyan, but the article is not actually about him. Same for the third--the woman quoted mentions him, but the article is about her, not Karthikeyan. Alyo (chat·edits) 15:39, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- The book list which was mentioned was written by him. Second one is not just quote how his mentorship useful for the students to clear the exams is explained the student community. Abayan leo (talk) 16:17, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
The book list which was mentioned was written by him.
I don't know how else to say this, but that doesn't demonstrate notability. The article doesn't say "Here's a list put together by Karthikeyan, a well-respected educator etc etc". It just lists his book.Second one is not just quote how his mentorship useful for the students to clear the exams is explained the student community.
No, it doesn't explain how his mentorship is useful, it just talks about how mentorship in general is useful. And he is quoted. There is literally no content about him personally. Again, that's not enough by Wikipedia's standards. Alyo (chat·edits) 16:37, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from Dustinblock1376 (23:51, 3 December 2023)
Hello! I've used Wikipedia for years and thought I may be able to help with edits. Any suggestions on where to start? --Dustinblock1376 (talk) 23:51, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Dustinblock1376, thanks for registering! I've left a little welcome message on your talk page (User talk:Dustinblock1376), which is the place other editors will leave you notes, comments, feedback, etc. To be quite honest, I think the best way to start is to begin with what you're actually interested in. If you go back to the beginning of my edits, you'll mostly see a bunch of edits to articles about college football and video games. Nothing earth-shattering, but it helps to begin on issues you're passionate about already, or enjoy reading, researching, and writing about. Around different topics areas, editors often form "Wikiprojects" (a list roughly by activity is here) which will often have to-do lists and suggested areas of need--that's a good way to find articles that need help. Our WP:Maintenance page has a possibly-overwhelming list of issues that need solving across the site, but may be a better way to get a sense of what kinds of issues you might be best suited to work on. Let me know if I can answer any follow-up questions! Alyo (chat·edits) 00:40, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
Question from Gknoy (17:41, 4 December 2023)
Hi Alyo, I tried to add a well-known influence on Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" in the notes section. (note c) But it shows beneath the other influences mentioned on a line apart.
Is there a way to fix that? It looks very odd as displayed. --Gknoy (talk) 17:41, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Gknoy, and welcome to Wikipedia. The way that sources and references usually work in Wikipedia is that they are actually located in the body of the text, and then we use a template at the bottom of the page to actually display the reference. So in this case, note c is actually located in the first line of the Thesis section (The_History_of_the_Decline_and_Fall_of_the_Roman_Empire#Thesis) and if you click Edit on that specific section you'll see this text in the edit box:
Gibbon offers an explanation for the fall of the Roman Empire, a task made difficult by a lack of comprehensive written sources, though he was not the only historian to attempt it.
- So note c is actually that text inside the squiggly brackets there, with "efn" being a call to efn, or the "Explanatory footnotes" template. The text inside the efn template is then displayed because of the Notelist template in the Notes section. If you add the text you're trying to add inside that efn template, instead of down in the Notes section, it will display correctly. Let me know if you're able to figure that out :) Alyo (chat·edits) 17:53, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you, Alyo! That worked perfectly! Now that you explain it, I remember having the same problem some years ago, but I'd forgotten how to fix it. Thank you for your other "Welcome" email too. I don't often find things I feel need fixing so I'll mark both "unread" and hope to remember to consult them when I do! (And lol, it will probably be the same notes problem again!)
- Best regards,

Question from Ahmadhussein297 (06:42, 27 December 2023)
Hello Aylo,
When i open my User contributions, i find out that there is green numbers with a plus beside them (+) , and (current), can you please explain to me what do they mean?
Thanks, --Ahmadhussein297 (talk) 06:42, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Ahmadhussein297, the green numbers (or sometimes red) are a indication of how content you added (or took away) from the page. If you add a single letter or character, it will say (+1). If you removed an unnecessary "the", it would say (-3). It's just an easy way to see when someone has made a large addition or subtraction (usually >500 characters) from the page. The (current) tells you whether your edit is the most recent edit to the page, and thus your edit is the (current) version. If the (current) isn't there, that just means someone else has edited the page since you last edited it. Let me know if you have any other questions :) Alyo (chat·edits) 17:24, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
