RE: Ese Hombre

Jona! Buddy! You're back! It's good to see you! Yeah, I don't mind working on the song article, but my priority will be the album first. :P But I will definitely help out as India's cover is one my favorite songs from her. If you'd like, we can do the album article together, it's in this sandbox. Erick (talk) 19:11, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Heyyyy! :D yea I'm back just haven't been in the mood to be on Wikipedia. Well I noticed that you were working on the album so I decided to write something about one of the tracks. I don't mind helping out but I'm pretty sure that's something you want to work on. Best, Jonatalk to me 20:08, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

DYK reviewing

Thanks for reviewing my nomination at Template:Did you know nominations/Telmatobius ventriflavum. Do you think you could include a few more details in the review, such as length, newness, copyvio check, etc.? I ask because nominations that seem incomplete are often marked with " More detailed review needed", which delays the promotion. Thanks! G S Palmer (talkcontribs) 13:54, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

Oh sorry about that, I'll get right on it. Best, jona(talk) 14:38, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
The review is still incomplete. Would you mind finishing it up based on what BlueMoonset has commented? G S Palmer (talkcontribs) 17:24, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
@G S Palmer: Let's hope this time around the review will be fine. My apologies, jona(talk) 23:33, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

One of several of Godot13's quality submissions during round 1

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Australia Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

You may also wish to know that The Core Contest is running through the month of March. Head there for further details - they even have actual prizes!

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Selena

Hi. Thanks. There was a reason I removed the text in question. The artist's name was not included (see diff) so it didn't make complete sense. I removed it and stored it on my notepad, intending to restore with all the pertinent info. but never got to update it. My very bad. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. BLP Issue

Regarding your question about the murder of Selena at the Misc Ref Desk, the allegations you have listed may be problematic and are not supported there. I have brought the issue to attention at the administrator's notice board, where you may wish to comment, as possibly violating WP:BLP. See bhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incidents#Various_allegations_about_a_living_person_at_the_Misc_Ref_Desk_possibly_violating_WP:BLP. I have no opposition to what you wish to do regarding an article, but listing the information at the ref desk without proof of the allegations there is problematic. Sincerely. μηδείς (talk) 00:57, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

Thank you very much, and I appreciate your not taking my caution as criticism. I wanted to err on the side of caution. My personal opinion would be that listing all her claims would be undue weight. Perhaps an example or two assuming you have a reference, and then those who are interested could look it up. Other than her one act, the manager has no notability of her own. I'll close the comments at ANI and RD. μηδείς (talk) 02:03, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for that, I really appreciate it. And sorry if it felt like I was crossing the line when I wrote those. Best, jona(talk) 02:05, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
To be more specific, there were two issues. The ref desk is simply not the place to ask for that sort of advice, since what we do is recommend books or articles for people to read. The other issue was possibly defaming her killer. We can call her a killer since she was convicted, but we can't post here and there that she made various claims unless we can back up the claims. It was for that reason I filed a formal report, mostly in case you didn't get back and say "all these claims by her are documented here: source". In any case, there's nothing inherently wrong with taking this question up elsewhere, or with publishing the claims, assuming you have the refs and think they are notable. Best wishes, μηδείς (talk) 02:11, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
You're right, my fault and I will take your advise and not create a separate article that will focus on those claims. Best, jona(talk) 02:25, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

If it's alright with you

I moved 2015 in Latin American music to 2015 in Latin music to have it focused on Latin music as a genre rather than simply Latin American music. Under the definition of Latin American music, we wouldn't be able to include artists like Enrique Igleisas or Alejandro Sanz since they're from Spain yet are considered Latin artists and Billboard's definition of a Latin album is a product containing 50% of its recordings in Spanish. It's just my suggestion though so you can move back if you're uncomfortable about it. BTW, I'm planning to start an edit-a-thon in Miami dedicated to Latin music about 3-4 months from now. Nothing is set in stone yet, but I'm looking forward to see how it can be done. Erick (talk) 03:09, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

I'm fine with that, I wasn't the one who created it though; I saw it abandoned and figured I give it some tlc. Is the edit-a-thon just for WP:Latin music members or are you trying to facilitate more people in that area to contribute? I used to live in Orlando but I'm all the way up in Connecticut lolz, so good luck on the project; it does sound like a great plan though so keep me updated. Best, jona(talk) 13:10, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
Well I gotta say, you did a good job! =) The purpose of the edit-a-thon is to recruit new people into joining Wikipedia. One organization I'm hoping to get involved in is the Latin Recording Academy since the Latin music project is based on their definition of "Latin music" and they set up a Cultural Foundation for anyone wanting to do study under the Latin music field. Plus their headquarters are over there which makes it convenient. Erick (talk) 22:37, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
Thank you . Sounds interesting, I believe its a great idea to outsource there since they already have an educational area for those interested in the topic, maybe you might be able to teach a class about Wikipedia and get them involved in WP:Latin music; sounds intimidating =) but its worthwhile to be invested in working with like-minded people who might not know about the existence of our project. Reverted my edit

Hi! You recently just reverted my edit on "List of Awards and Nominations received by Selena." I don't want to start an edit war so I came to your talk page! :) The citation is directly from SelenaBrand.com a website ran by Selena's Father Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Sister Suzette Quintanilla. They stated how Selena was nominated for 80 Tejano Music Awards, with 36 wins and 44 nominations. Why did you revert my edit if I edited it correctly? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SQPADH19711979 (talkcontribs) 06:38, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

@SQPADH19711979: The website is biased and ran by family members which is against WP:IRS. You need to find newspapers, magazines, and/or books (which have no ties to Selena or her family) that provides the details you claim she won or were nominated in as a source. Selena: reference question

Hello, Jona. I have a question about this edit to Selena. A named reference "image" is invoked twice with the code <ref name=image/>. However, this reference does not appear to be defined and the result is an error in the list of references, at #225 currently. I wasn't sure what your intention was, so I left it alone – please could you take a look? Thanks! Wdchk (talk) 11:29, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing this up. I added "ref name" to image and added all the sections needed to verify that claim, but I guess I made an error somehow by using the templates box above on the header and it ended up as just a ref code. Currently, I cannot locate its source (most likely found from my college newspaper database); but since its already sourced to a book its safe to remove it altogether from the article. Best, jona(talk) 11:43, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

article subvision

Hello, How Are You , Could You PleaseKindly Stop Changing The Information Regarding Selena, I Understand she was known by this name, but it is NOT her full legal name, which is someones name usually at birth, not what they are called at the disco club, Thank You. Please Also If You are going to change someones edits that they have gone out off there way to contribute, please give a valid reason as to why!!!, as i have done with my edits — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.43.24.108 (talk) 13:02, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Well hello and thanks for contributing here on Wikipedia! Here we use names that a person is known as such as Nicki Minaj for an example. We don't use their full legal name if they are not known by that by the general public or "disco club" (aka America) as you put it. I actually did provide a reason on your talk page, and by screaming (using caps) is not a good way to tell people what you are editing. Best, jona(talk) 13:12, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Hello, Again, I understand what you mean, sorry i am just used to writing in caps, i did not understand it is screaming, Nicki Minaj, as you have mentioned in the article , only has her name of this in the INFOBOX, not the actual article, you will see it starts as her name and then gives the name of her stage name, that is why i put the SELENA article in brackets after she was born as Selena Quintanilla, i see she married a mister Perez, — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.43.24.108 (talk) 13:20, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

I understand and thanks for clarifying. There's nothing wrong with adding her full name (not linking it as an article that bears the title), but the reason why I reverted your edit was the sentence of "known professionally" and "superstar" which are discouraged to use in articles as it is not encyclopedic, Selena has an article here because she is famous enough to be included here so we don't need to use words like that. Best, jona(talk) 13:28, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Hello, Again How are You, So are you happy we do it just this way Selena (born as Selena Quintanilla), Regards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.43.24.108 (talk) 13:31, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Actually, yes. And also you may want to create a username and sign your messages after you have post them so I won't have to re-write my response to you since a Wiki bot will sign your IP for you, which then becomes an edit conflict for myself. Thanks, jona(talk) 13:37, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Big Brother Canada

Hi, since you are the one who is replying to all the comments on the talk page perhaps you could update the article. --MSalmon (talk) 15:08, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

@Msalmon: I am not an admin and I was only helping out IPs and users who were confused about the full protection of the article. An admin will update it eventually, but you can request that the article be unprotected if you feel as though users will not engage in disputes. Best, jona(talk) 19:37, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
By the time the protection comes off then there will be a lot of editing that will need to be done to make up for the lack of updates --MSalmon (talk) 19:46, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
@Msalmon: The best thing to do right now is to request that the article be unprotected, I really can't do anything about it. Best, jona(talk) 14:00, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 May newsletter

C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) is a long-period comet discovered on 17 August 2014 by Terry Lovejoy; and is one of several Featured Pictures worked up by India The Herald (submissions) during the second round.

The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Belarus Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.

Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.

The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. Good luck to all competitors for the third round! Figureskatingfan (talk · contribs · email), Miyagawa (talk · contribs · email) and Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) 16:21, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

Re: Congrats man

Thank you so much for your support and for helping me it making a better article! It fills me with joy to know that one of most essentials Latin albums has become FA! We need to get Amor Prohibido and Dreaming of You at least GA as I consider those to be essential Latin albums of all time as well. So after the break, maybe you could help me get the Latin music portal FP? It's pretty much done for the most part so I just need to request a PR. I consider the portal to be a compilation of best articles that our members have contributed to. I'll stick around to see the FA barnstar on the Romance article. ;) Erick (talk) 14:16, 24 April 2015 (UTC)

Oh boy, I gave up on those after their many unsuccessful runs but I believe I've matured as an editor and it could happen. I don't mind helping at all, some of the selected articles needs updates on their current state; maybe even installing a rule or guideline when selecting articles could be a great asset. Any who, congrats and hopefully when you come back you'll be charged up to bring more articles to FA status! I'll stick around and continue my best with improving articles to our WikiProject. Enjoy, jona(talk) 14:39, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
Yep, and I can lend a helping hand by giving feedback on the talk page as you did on the talk Romance talk page. I never thought it would be possible to make Romance FA because of the lack of information online until I learned about Mexican newspapers online dating to the 1920s as well as the Resource Request center. Like the Latin music project, I base the definition of "Latin music" on the Latin Recording Academy and Billboard (from October 2012 and onwards). To me, the portal is my gratitude to you and all of the active users for your hard work. I"m going to do some checks around Wikipedia before I leave for the break today. Thanks again for all your support! Erick (talk) 14:50, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
I could definitely use your help with those sources =) But in the meantime have a well-deserved wikibreak. Talk to you soon, jona(talk) 23:01, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
Jona, I'd like to have your opinion on something. What do you thinking the inclusion of Spanish versions by non Latin artists into the project like those by Beyonce for example? I have been conflicted about this for a long time because I'm afraid of getting into unneeded edit wars. But Tomica told me on FB he was very open to having the Spanglish version of "Hate That I Love You" being tagged by the Latin music banner so I just did that. I don't know if we should just limited to Spanish versions featuring a Latin artist or accept any Spanish or Portuguese versions of a song by a non Latin artist. Erick (talk) 21:24, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
@Magiciandude: Sorry for the late response been busy :/ But I believe they should be included, I did so for "Sukiyaki" since Selena and others recorded that song in Spanish and Portuguese (now thinking about it; what about that tribute album in Spanish by Latin artists for Michael Jackson?) Oh you have him on FB but not me lolz rude jk . To be honest, the definition of Latin music is very complex when you think about it, like for instance some European Spanish music albums and songs are not even tagged for our WikiProject; though they are Spanish-language songs. Maybe we should have a !vote on what should be included based on the definition of the term/word and based on what our WikiProject is about or we should just simplify the definition since the term 'Latin music' is very vague...maybe something along the lines of "any recorded musical composition including recorded albums and songs in Spanish, Portuguese, etc, and music events catering to said recorded Latin music". Right now, I feel as though we are only catering to the America's Spanish music and Portugal and Spain Spanish music and ignoring the thousands of languages spoken in Spain music and other countries whose artists have dabbled into Spanish-language songs from time to time. Best, jona(talk) 00:56, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

E-mail me a link to your FB and I'll be sure to add you (if you want =)). Anyways, I have no qualms with Latin covers of non-Spanish/Portuguese songs since the project covers all songs by a Latin artist in either language. And it's funny you should about the complexity of defining what constitutes of "Latin music" because I'm completely agree with you. Back when we were the Latin American task force, I noticed that many artists from Spain were getting Latin music awards from the LGAs, the Grammys, the Lo Nuestro awards, and Billboard. Same thing goes for the Italian artists who have crossed over to the Latin market by singing in Spanish. If "Latin music" was supposed to mean only Latin American music, then why were these artists getting Latin awards? That's when I suspected that "Latin music" might actually more than one definitions than simply meaning "Latin music". That's what motivated me to have the task force become its own project and change its scope to include music from Spain as well as creating the article for Latin music (genre). In deciding to how to define "Latin music" for the project scope, I looked at how the Latin music market works. Billboard and the RIAA defines a product as Latin if it has 50% of its content in Spanish that's one factor I took.

But the definition of "Latin music" that I think makes the most sense is the one by the Latin Recording Academy (the guys behind the LGAs). There are several reasons why I chose theirs over the others: 1) The LGAs are the most important awards in the Latin music market 2) In addition to Spanish, they also include awards for Portuguese-language recordings for Brazilian music and a small portion of Portugal (only one fado singer and a rock band from there have ever been nominated while another fado singer received a lifetime achievement award last year). It was thanks to the Brazilian category that I decided to include Portuguese-language recordings to the project (otherwise I might have only encompass Brazilians who sing in Spanish). Victor Lopes is actually one of our members who contribute to Brazilian music. 3) The nice thing about LARAS is that even though they're based in the US, they accept recordings internationally as opposed to only the US (unlike other major Latin music awards). Not every Hispanophone and Lusophone music is in though. Since it's based on the LARAS's definition of Latin music, there are some Spanish/Portuguese-speaking music from countries like Angola, Equatorial Guinea, East Timor, and Cape Verde that are not covered by the project as no product from those areas have ever been nominated for a major Latin music award or are even acknowledged as "Latin" to begin with.

I will concede however that there is no definition of "Latin music" that will ever satisfy everyone. This article from the Los Angeles Times details about how difficult it was LARAS to define what is considered "Latin" and how they got flanked by some artists who consider their works to be "Latin" but aren't eligible for a LG nomination. In the end though, I'll stick with their definition of "Latin music" for the time being but I will listened to any suggestions if there are changes that need to be made. There's a nice book called Latin Music: Musicians, Genres, and Themes by Ilan Stavans that pretty sums the usage of "Latin music" by the media and confusion and complicated it gets because it keeps evolving. Erick (talk) 03:32, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

So the LGAs only awards Spanish and Portuguese-language music artists? What about songs and albums sung in Galego, Catalan, Basque, etc? I also don't think they include bilingual songs (besides English-Spanish) so should we include those recordings or should we completely stay loyal to the inclusion based on the LGAs, which I agree with you that they are most important award ceremonies, but then we are neglecting recordings sung in different variants of Spanish and Portuguese-based languages and songs that are bilingual from non-American (continent) artists (since you allowed Rihanna's single to be included in WP:Latin music). After reading the LA Times article, I see that they decided that Basque music (or one of the artist mention) was ineligible for a Latin Grammy because their/his songs are sung in French Creole. This just adds to the complexity of "Latin music", like what the article says constitutes a "Latin sound". I believe our WikiProject shouldn't go by "Latin sounding music" and then there's the more difficult "Latin music" languages which is just too much to flesh out. I agree that we should just focus on one definition that makes the most sense and the LGAs are it; even though I don't agree with the way they do their eligibility process. Another thing, why is Music of Spain included in our project but Music of Catalonia isn't? Best, jona(talk) 17:51, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
I think you meant Haitians because they're the ones they sing in French Creole. Actually, according to their FAQ and this interview with Gabriel Abaroa, they do accept awards Basque and other native languages of the Americas and Iberian Peninsula by majority vote. I'd personally consider this to be an optional thing as opposed to required, so if someone wants to tag recording in those languages, that's fine, and if they don't want to, that's also fine. I'll go ahead and tag Music of Catalonia right now (thanks for catching that). They do include do accept Spanglish songs according to the manual so long as 50% of it is lyrics are in Spanish or Portuguese. I'm lenient on allowing most Spanglish songs anyway. ;) Erick (talk) 18:12, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
@Magiciandude: Nice glad to see they accept recordings of all variants and dialects of Spanish. The word Spanglish means Spanish-English, what I was talking about were other bilingual songs such as Arabic-Spanish for instance, should we also include these recordings or just English-Spanish? jona(talk) 14:24, 8 May 2015 (UTC)
First let me just say that I found that song to be beautiful (I actually have a thing for flamenco). If that song has an article, it would be in not only because about half of its lyrics are in Spanish but because its flamenco which is covered by the project. On a somewhat related note, have you heard this flamenco song? It's one of my favorite songs from Mecano. Erick (talk) 14:54, 8 May 2015 (UTC)
@Magiciandude: I just stumbled upon it when I was looking for Spanish-Arabic songs to provide as an example lolz, glad you liked it though. So, to my understanding if any recorded song has at least 50% of its lyrics in Spanish (regardless of any other languages sung in the same song) its eligible for inclusion in WP:Latin music? jona(talk) 19:25, 8 May 2015 (UTC)
Pretty much yeah. I guess the only other rule is that it's directed for the Latin audience but that's pretty obvious lol. Same goes for Portuguese songs as well. Erick (talk) 19:34, 8 May 2015 (UTC)
Gotcha. This new guideline can also be tied into my question over at WP:Latin music. jona(talk) 19:39, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

Trial of Yolanda Saldívar

Hello: I notice you have removed the citation tag for the $50 million cost of defending Saldivar. There's no way it cost this much. Further in the article you say it was $20,000 and cite that figure. If it really was $20,000 which makes sense then the $50 million figure in the lead needs to be fixed in my opinion.Twofingered Typist (talk) 15:12, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

@Twofingered Typist: The lead is a summary of the article body. If the statement is dubious then add a tag on the sentence that holds the claim, not the lead. Furthermore, the claim is supported by the book but the GA reviewer cited that it should be rephrased to represent the author's POV comment and that it is not merely an accurate number for the cost of her attorneys and lawyers who represented her case but that of the author. I will look over the article and fix the concerns raised in the GA review. Best, jona(talk) 13:07, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
@AJona1992: I understand the lead is a summary; my problem is that you wrote $50 million in the lead and $20,000 in the article if I am reading it right. So the dubious statement is in the lead ... not the article... hence the tag which you removed. Something is still amiss.Twofingered Typist (talk) 21:29, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
@Twofingered Typist: It doesn't say $200,000 in the section, can you point me to it so I can see? Best, jona(talk) 22:07, 13 June 2015 (UTC)

@AJona1992: Here you go, as requested, I hope you can understand my concerns now.

This is from the second paragraph of the lead:

On April 3, Saldívar was arraigned and pleaded not guilty; she explained that the shooting was accidental and that she had meant to end her own life. Judge Mike Westergren, who presided over the case, appointed high-profile defense attorney Douglas Tinker and his team to appear for Saldívar at an estimated cost of $50 million.

This is from the third paragraph in the “Pre-trial” section: “His entire team spent around $20,000 to defend Saldívar.[42] “ Regards.Twofingered Typist (talk) 12:44, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

If you look here (where the reviewer pointed out for ref#42) it was an opinion and not an accurate number and the team did not spend $20k on the case but it was the mock trail. I have fixed the errors based on the sources. Best, jona(talk) 20:38, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

I will not ask her to verify anything because she is not a reliable source per WP:IRS and WP:SELF. The source would have to come from a website (no blogs, no personal websites or social media websites, non-credibility websites, gossip websites, etc) it must be sources like Oxygen (since she is a cast member) or People magazine for instance. I cannot ask her to verify her name because this is Wikipedia and it needs to be verified by anyone—not just myself. Best, jona(talk) 02:30, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Selena Albums Discography

Hello: I have copy edited this article as requested and have one issue which you can perhaps clarify.

You write: "Amor Prohibido was considered to be her "biggest album" and was credited for Tejano music's first marketable era.[nb 3] The album popularized Tejano music among a younger and wider audience than at any other time in the genre's history."[27][28]

Neither of the references in nb3 mention the phrase "marketable era" a phrase which doesn't really make any sense.

I would edit the sentences to say: "Amor Prohibido was considered to be her "biggest album" and was credited with popularizing Tejano music among a younger and wider audience more than at any other time in the genre's history." - the footnote would be dropped.

Are you okay with this? Regards. Twofingered Typist (talk) 19:25, 17 July 2015 (UTC)

@Twofingered Typist: The phrase "marketable era" means the first time that a music genre entered in an era that made it marketable. Tejano music was only a regional/local scene before Selena's Amor Prohibido came out and made it popular in the Latin music market. But I did re-read the source and it calls Live! as being that break instead of Amor Prohibido. You can add the new change and remove that phrase and source. Best, jona(talk) 01:17, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
Copy edit is now complete. I hope you are satisfied with it. Kind regards. Twofingered Typist (talk) 13:51, 19 July 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 September newsletter

The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.

In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Scotland Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Philadelphia Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.

The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
  2. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
  3. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
  4. Somerset Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
  5. Washington, D.C. West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
  6. Somerset Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
  7. United States Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
  8. England Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.

The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.

Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

WikiCup 2015: The results

WikiCup 2015 is now in the books! Congrats to our finalists and winners, and to everyone who took part in this year's competition.

This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). All of his points were earned for an impressive 253 featured pictures and their associated bonus points (5060 and 1695, respectively). His entries constituted scans of currency from all over the world and scans of medallions awarded to participants of the U.S. Space program. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came in second place; she earned by far the most bonus points (4082), for 4 featured articles, 15 good articles, and 147 DYKs, mostly about in her field of expertise, natural science. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), a finalist every year since 2010, came in third, with 2379 points.

Our newcomer award, presented to the best-performing new competitor in the WikiCup, goes to United States Rationalobserver (submissions). Everyone should be very proud of the work they accomplished. We will announce our other award winners soon.

A full list of our award winners are:

We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2016 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. WikiCup 2016: Game On!

We are about to enter the second week of the 2016 WikiCup. The most recent player to sign up brings the current total to 101 contestants. Signups close on 5 February. If you’re interested, you can join this year's WikiCup here.

We are aware that in some areas the scoring bot’s numbers are a little bit off (i.e., overly generous) and are working to have that corrected as soon as possible.--MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:03, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

One of Adam Cuerden’s several quality restorations during round 1

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. Forty-seven competitors move into this round (a bit shy of the expected 64), and we are roughly broken into eight groups of six. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups.

Twenty-two Good Articles were submitted, including three by Connecticut Cyclonebiskit (submissions), and two each by Denmark MPJ-DK (submissions), Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), and New South Wales Cas Liber (submissions). Twenty-one Featured Pictures were claimed, including 17 by There's always time for skeletons Adam Cuerden (submissions) (the Round 1 high scorer). Thirty-one contestants saw their DYKs appear on the main page, with a commanding lead (28) by Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions). Twenty-nine participants conducted GA reviews with Lancashire J Milburn (submissions) completing nine.

If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Thanks to everyone for participating, and good luck to those moving into round 2. WikiCup 2016 March newsletter (update)

Along with getting the year wrong in the newsletter that went out earlier this week, we did not mention (as the bot did not report) that New South Wales Cas Liber (submissions) claimed the first Featured Article Persoonia terminalis of the 2016 Wikicup.
