User talk:A930913, I often manage the Jon Moss' article, as long as I am his fan and I have knowledge to make it, and I always introduce references to everything I typed there, recently an user Falcosgirl altered the page, changing the birth date of Jon's children, I changed back to the real dates and then she altered again. Sorry, but it seems this user is doing inappropriate changes. I think you can help me to make it stop.
Thanks. P metalady (talk) 20:52, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
- I have gutted the entire section. There was but a single reliable source that actually came close to saying what it was cited for. The ages of the children are irrelevant to Moss and raise WP:BLP issue; citing birth records definitely is not appropriate. The article's other sources largely aren't much better; in particular Wikipedia does not consider itself a reliable source. I'll notify Falcosgirl that her edits were inappropriate. - If I understand correctly there's a five-minute delay on the bot. Please increase this to something like -- at least -- an hour, and preferably 24 hours. While this function might be of some value, it absolutely is low priority, and one of my pet peeves is bots jumping in between one of my edits and the next one. A one- to 24-hour delay would reduce edit conflicts and unnecessary notifications. EEng (talk) 22:55, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
- [added later] I note in the next section below someone else requesting a 6-hour delay. I really think you should consider both my comments above, and the one below, re a long, long delay. EEng (talk) 01:52, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
- @EEng and Bjenks: Yes, there is a growing list of notation that I need to get it to ignore; I'm trying to work out the best way to do so.
- The problem with not matching a bracket right, is that it can wipe out a page. Whilst a link to a disambiguation page would result in users having to disambiguate themselves, a bracket in the wrong place could prevent a user from reading the article in the first place. I do not consider this low priority.
- I assure you that I consider seriously the suggestions posted to me; many a change were born from discussion here. 930913(Congratulate) 11:32, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

Don't know how this happened or why it appears on the page of the finished product. Did I do something wrong? I went back to fix but it is still there. Tony Thornburn (talk) 13:43, 28 May 2013 (UTC) I am having trouble editing my Wiki site. I am somewhat amateurish at this business. I was trying to check/add additional references since a comment had appeared at the top of the page requesting additional ones.
The original link to the UK Charity doesn't work any longer. They seem to have changed their web page system. So one can't get directly to a charity number, one has to type that in. So I have added a pdf to of of the posted accounts (not ideal but still). However, I can't remember how I inserted the link ^1 viz .... The Choir is a Registered Charity<ref name="CC">{{EW charity|1043756}}</ref> which refers to the aforesaid in the last section The CBBC Today
Moreover the Australian Library have changed their web site also. When I tried to paste the new http link it didn't work, so I have added a pdf copy of the original article (but it is only one page of 4, eech has a separate page! This is the link http://trove.nla.gov.au/work/8491798?q=city+of+bath+bach+choir+1954&c=collection&versionId=9804220Tony Thornburn (talk) 13:50, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
So anything you can do to help me would be appreciated. I would like the top 'observation comment' removed somehow please! Thanks. TonyTony Thornburn (talk) 13:43, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
- See WP:Referencing for beginners on how to easily create nicely-formatted footnotes. The current sources, however, are not at all sufficient to verify the article text. As a random example, take this statement: "Today the maximum number of singers the CBBC will admit is about 100" - says who? Wikipedia content should be based on reliable sources that are independent of the subject. The newspaper reviews are such sources; the press release is not. The vast majority of the draft content, including the list of every performance ever, doesn't cite any sources, and I doubt that level of detail is helpful in the first place. Diff: opening bracket without a corresponding closing bracket
Comment/question: Awful, awful wording. I just stumbled over a mess, talked myself not to complain but clean it up. Some kind of "thanks someone finally did it" would have been approbriate. Instead a bot notifies me that I have broken the syntax. Hello? The brackets it noticed are in plain English text. Why does it talk in compiler language to me? I may have a bracket too few, but I didn't break anything. The English syntax is still fine. I can see that such a notificaton is useful if you do complex template-heavy boxing stuff, but for most parts, we are not programming the articles, we are writing them. Suggestion. The bot should say "You have an opening bracket without a corresponding closing bracket." if that's what it means. It could also frown upon placing brackets inside brackets because that's what I did, but then, this is awfully normal in programming, only frowned upon in writing. Which is more important? Stupid girl (talk) 23:41, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
- You did indeed have an opening bracket without a closing bracket (fixed), and the bot isn't smart enough to tell whether the problem is within plain text, an infobox or whatever - thus it gives you the wiki markup for the part of the article where the surplus bracket occurs. And I'd say a forgotten bracket, even in plain text, is still something that should be fixed, even if it didn't break anything here. Huon (talk) 01:18, 18 May 2013 (UTC)
- You don't want to understand, do you? A bot that makes Wikipedia editing into a syntactical correctness test and uses inappropriate technical language is much worse than any unmatched pair of brackets could ever be. Even if it's only because it is too dumb for what it tries to do. Stupid girl (talk) 10:05, 18 May 2013 (UTC)
- @Stupid girl: I agree that the wording could be better, and I've been improving it as suggestions come in. I certainly see the benefit of your wording, however you could also have a closing bracket without a corresponding opening bracket, making it tricky to fit into the templates succinctness without being overly verbose. I welcome your suggestions on how to reword it. 930913(Congratulate) 09:26, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Bot edits
Hi, your bot appears to have some isses. Firstly, it sent me a message without an L2 heading which ended up being tagged onto an existing message [9]. Secondly, it informed me about an edit I didn't make. And thirdly, it picked up an edit from a section of the page I wasn't even editing -- [10][11]. Fourthly, I have fixed what someone else broke [12]. Pol430 talk to me 12:12, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
- It found a section with the heading "May 2013" and appended to it. If there would have been no existing heading, it would have created one.
- You did make this edit, right?
- According to that diff, you did edit that section. (Though admittedly the bot does not consider this, so in other cases what you say is partially possible.)
- And in so doing, you broke something yourself. Let me explain:-
- This was in the article before your edit:
<ref>[http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19730510-1 ASN Aircraft accident Douglas DC-8-33 HS-TGU Kathmandu-Tribhuvan Airport (KTM)<!-- Bot generated title -->]</ref>
- You removed the [, resulting in:
<ref>http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19730510-1 ASN Aircraft accident Douglas DC-8-33 HS-TGU Kathmandu-Tribhuvan Airport (KTM)<!-- Bot generated title -->]</ref>
- @Pol430: I hope this clarifies things for you. 930913(Congratulate) 12:43, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
- Fair one, I didn't notice that error because running the reflinks tool fixed it again. I thought it was referring to the single square brackets in another section. It would be helpful if the bot could highlight the exact piece of syntax that is broken, although I admit I have no idea if this is technically possible. I still think the bot should be creating its own L2 heading, but if it's good enough for BAG then who am I to argue. Pol430 talk to me 20:20, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

Comment/question: On all three of these pages, the unbalanced brackets were added by somebody else, following which I merely made edits with AWB to apply the {{uncategorized}} tag — but then I got notified by BracketBot about the unbalanced brackets. Although I make a sincere effort to repair mangled or broken syntax when I can, in these particular instances I was working in AWB and thus was unable to view the actual page to detect that there was a problem to be fixed. And then in a second case on Kordichal, I fixed the original user's unbalanced brackets and then got another notification from BracketBot about that. Because it's intrusive to have to flip back and forth from AWB to my talk page repeatedly, I am deeply and profoundly uninterested in being notified every time I edit a page that happens to have a syntax error in it if I'm not the one who originally committed the syntax error — and thus I would request that you make an effort to ensure that BracketBot is better able to distinguish who should actually be notified, because while I'm quite happy to be notified if I made a mistake, not a single one of these four edits was something that I should have been notified about. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 18:51, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hey Bearcat. As you know, I use AWB too. There are times when I'm doing a specific task and don't/can't be bothered by cleaning up other things... I should say I clean up what is in the alert window, as everyone should, but AWB only alerts on the first broken bracket found. If there are more broken brackets I don't/can't be bothered by the bot that there are more. However, there are times when I am fixing broken double brackets or other syntax. I want to be notified if I miss something. So, depending on the task, I either opt in or out of getting messages. See User:BracketBot for instructions. BracketBot was specifically designed to alert if there is something wrong on the page, regardless if comes via a person's edit or not. You and I fix people's mistakes. It also notified me of an existing error in the page on the line beginning "on request for smaller aircraft,...". I'm curious, but if I hadn't made the error would the bot have notified me of the other just because I edited the page? Would it be possible for the bot to notify at the end of the page rather than in the same section? With the new notification system it is not always obvious where the last comment was posted.
CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 12:46, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
- In my experience the bot is smart enough not to notify you if it doesn't think you made the problem worse, but if it thinks so, it gives a list of all mismatched brackets, not just those you might have caused.
- I'm not sure whether it would be considered an improvement if the bot created a new section for each notification - there are enough people annoyed by the bot's notifications as-is, and anything making them even more conspicious could be seen as a step in the wrong direction. A930913 will have to weigh the pros and cons on such a change, which would probably be easy enough to implement. Huon (talk) 17:51, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
- I would prefer to be notified even if I didn't make the edit. But I can see that most people would not find that an ideal feature. Perhaps that and the different section on a talk page for the notification could be made as opt-in. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 08:49, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
- @CambridgeBayWeather: To confirm, only if you break some brackets in your edit will it notify you. If you want to check brackets on a given article, I think AWB is your bets bet, though I might make a better tool soon. 930913(Congratulate) 23:55, 25 May 2013 (UTC)
- AWB reports that there are missing brackets but, unfortunately, does not tell you where in the article. I was tempted to break another set of brackets just so the bot would notify me and I could find them. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 05:48, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

The header you add to users talk pages, for example: May 2013, is identical to the header we use in antivandalism work. I suggest using something more easily distinguished; for example: Your recent edit. Regards, Pinethicket (talk) 23:48, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

- @Pinethicket: Aye. It's meant to be seen by countervandals, because when viewed from that context, the edits are likely to be vandalism and should be checked. Would it be beter to get BracketBot to actually fix/remove the stray brackets it finds rather than simply notifying editors? GiantSnowman 10:58, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
- Sure it would. Could point A930913 towards an algorithm that will allow the bot to determine whether the brackets are mismatched due to missing or surplus brackets, and where the brackets are missing? I'd expect that would require an almost AI-level bot. Huon (talk) 20:02, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
- Not at all. Surely if it knows that brackets are missing/present, then it should be able to replace/remove as appropriate. GiantSnowman 16:30, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
- Removing mismatched brackets would be easy. Determining whether there are surplus brackets to be removed, or whether there are missing brackets that need to be added, is much more difficult. I'd expect removing all mismatched brackets would break about as much as it'd repair, or at least leave the true problem unresolved. Huon (talk) 23:21, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

BracketBot - ClemRutter UI tweaks
Page: Irrelevant.
Diff: Irrelevant.
Comment/question: Congratulations on your irritating and potentially useful BOT. I suffer from fingers that work faster than my mind and a keyboard that is more wayward than I am. So there are a few tweaks I would like to see to make the BOT a little more house trained.
- I have no intention of forming an emotional relationship with a piece of computer code- so forget the Hello bit.
- The crux of the BOT is hidden- I need a key press to find out what it is whinging about. At least make it default to SHOw
- When unhidden it shows me what the problem is. I then have to fix it. -Why is there no autofix button.
- When unhidden it shows me what the problem is. But it doesn't tell me where the problem is.- It could give a line number, or at least the section/subsection. This is not obvious when you are doing a maintenance session adding multiple {{sfn}}} to a series of articles.
- I do hate back-tracking on a page. The edit the page link is before you discover how to unhide the problem- so I am forced back into the introductory puerile dross to find the wretched link.
Cups of teas and counselling available on my talk page
Clem Rutter (talk) 12:12, 1 June 2013 (UTC)
- @ClemRutter: Some people demand that bots pretend to be friendly. Go figure. I'm looking into defaulting to show for short ones. There is no autofix because there is currently no way of knowing what's wrong (despite being able to detect that something is wrong.) I will look into getting line numbers, though it wasn't obvious how to do it last time I tried. 930913(Congratulate) 22:58, 1 June 2013 (UTC)
- Yes quite a challenge. I haven't dived into bot design or even investigated which languages/libraries that one uses. I do occasionally do an offserver global search and replace using a Python script so I do know it is a bucket of eels.
- The Kuddly kitten v In yer face- could be handled by a user preference or dropping a cookie on the users machine.
- The Show/Hide option- is similar to the Template:Navbox which provides a V.T.E edit UI which most of us are familiar with. A modified E option that allowed modification of preferences. I am torn to suggest whether it breaks from style, to use this option to open and edit window on the first or all the violations detected.. overall I think not.
- The crux- we know something is wrong- we can locate the error to demonstrate it- but not give the editor a line number to locate it again.
- wasn't there a --n flag in grep to switch on line numbers.
- what ever language you are using you need a for/forever loop: target= readline(); grep (target|errordetection function() )
- I would prefer it was the server that was wasting time in locating the violation- rather than me doing it manually!
- We know that something was wrong but not what. True
- But each violation leaves a signature and we can best guess, say 5 possible solutions. For autofix- lets say sighted manual autofix- so the user is presented with 5 possible best guess solutions, and can choice which or none of these.
- Hope that hasn't disturbed you breakfast- put the kitten in the microwave, take a cup of coffee outside into the sun, and enjoy.-- Clem Rutter (talk) 09:13, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

I don't see that the page is malfunctioning - unless you count the change from the misleading statement that the Portman - it used to read Portland, before I stupidly tried to correct it - Group found the farm's beer label was illegal to 'claimed' it was illegal.
Unless, that is, you're in the pay of the British drinks industry, trying to kill off a small-time niche player.
I tried to 'de-bias' the entry. You, apparently, don't approve. Instead you send me riddles.
I can assure you that, as a teetotaller, I don't have a stake in the Wikipedia's smearing of Sheckter - except that I don't think honesty ever hurt an encyclopaedia.

- You forgot a closing bracket in the last reference. Fixed. BracketBot is an automatized system for detecting mismatched brackets, and it takes quite a bit of paranoia to accuse an automated bot of being "in the pay of the British drinks industry, trying to kill off a small-time niche player". I'll de-bias the article by summarizing a third-party source instead of basing the coverage on the Portman Group's own website or Sheckter's statements. Huon (talk) 10:39, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Just a heads up on a few changes I've just implemented.
- Text between <math> tags is now ignored.
- Name parameters are ignored (which should stop filenames causing problems.)
- Only <long> lists of errors come collapsed.
If you notice these causing unintended consequences, please panic.
@GoingBatty: I'm putting the notifications under the same header as that used by counter vandals to make it easier for CVs to spot other vandalism. (Chances are that if an editor gets warned for vandalism and breaks a bracket in another edit, that that edit is also vandalism.)

- I'm not sure why you say so here; for all I can tell BracketBot hasn't notified you about any mismatched brackets. That said, I have reverted your addition because those siblings seem rather irrelevant to the article's topic and aren't mentioned by the given source. Huon (talk) 23:34, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

I think the bracketbot mistakenly identified "|> Map.ofList" as a mismatched bracket in the markup. Nothing appears to be broken when viewed in Chrome. I can switch it to an > instead.
24.97.59.226 (talk) 18:55, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
- While the bot does have problems with ">" (because it may be part of HTML tags), it also reported one mismatched parenthesis and a broken link hidden in a comment. I fixed those issues. Huon (talk) 23:34, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

I fixed the missing parenthesis.
Now that I have your attention: I am periodically going to be adding more information about the actress as it becomes relevant (if someone else doesn't beat me to it).
Also ... is there a way to reduce or delete the history volume about edits under my name. I had to go back and forth several times and re-edit syntax, grammar, information, and citations -- which created a redundant editing history.
Pyxis Solitary (talk) 08:33, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
- Technically there's a way to modify the edit history, but it's only available to the most trusted admins and not to be used for mere cleanup, but for the removal of extremely inappropriate content (say, libel; see WP:OVERSIGHT). My suggestion would be to make use of the preview to spot minor errors before saving the page and thus avoiding the need for multiple consecutive edits. Huon (talk) 18:57, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

Grabags (talk) 22:06, 19 June 2013 (UTC) Hi, you were right about having used the wrong bracket on Gallery (Magazine) article } thanks for spotting that. I have fixed it.
Not sure if you can help, but I am struggling finding my way round Wikipedia, I'm too old to understand a lot of it. The page I have contributed has a message about it being an orphan. I've now linked three pages to it but how do I get rid of the message?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andi_land
"This article is an orphan, as no other articles link to it. Please introduce links to this page from related articles; suggestions may be available. (June 2013)"
Grabags (talk) 22:06, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
- The orphan tag was removed by Mdann52 with this edit. The article could do with quite some cleanup, though; for example, Facebook fan pages definitely are not reliable sources and should not be used as references. Huon (talk) 22:44, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

- That page has some strange code BracketBot pointed out (which I don't fully understand, mostly related to the timeline), but what summoned him in the first place was that you added two opening curly brackets without corresponding closing brackets to one of the references. I fixed that. See also WP:Referencing for beginners on how to easily create nicely-formatted footnotes. Huon (talk) 23:10, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
