I will be reading several boxes of documents at the Philadelphia Museum of Art library/archives in early February (appointment set for Feb 7). The material is on the National Serigraph Society and other topics of our mutual interest concerning printmaking in America. I know the material will not be quotable, since it is original research material, but if I find any references to publications and other acceptable sources I will let you know. I hope this happens.

Hi Rwarsager, Happy New Year to you too! Your note reminded me that I have to get back to the history of art prints in 20th century America. I have been thinking about it sporadically. I have been using my (self) allocated Wiki time to work on adding information about women artists included in the current Renwick show, This Present Moment: Crafting a Better World and the related Renwick Gallery 50th Anniversary Acquisition Campaign. Absolutely amazing artists, many of them 21st century American women. The next generation.

But back to our topic...I currently am of the opinion that the way forward is to create a timeline of important printmaking events in America in the 20th century. I spent some time last night getting it started User:WomenArtistUpdates/Timeline of 20th Century printmaking in America. Just a start, but it gives you a general idea how it might come together. I got the idea from similar timelines, like Timeline of women's suffrage in the United States. From this timeline a theme or article may emerge, but I may just post it as a timeline. Of course it will necessarily need to cover the literal American Print Renaissance from 1960 forward, including some info on the master printers.

Assuming you have time & inclination, I would really like it if you would add events to the time line. Just add stuff as it occurs to you. Bullet points can be fleshed out if no article exists, or link to the article if one does. I have also started a notes section on the talk page User talk:WomenArtistUpdates/Timeline of 20th Century printmaking in America, where I am jotting down ideas. Please add to that as well. We can follow each others revisions through the history of the draft.

Good luck on your trip to the Philadelphia archives. Research is a wee bit easier in the 21st century. One can use a camera or phone to take pictures of relevant material. So much easier than taking notes or photocopying. My experience with libraries is if you ask them the policy they will let you as long as no flash is involved. In my quest to upload WPA works I found that the Philadelphia Museum of Art a rich source of images. Beautiful example of a digitized collection. In my experience, second only to SAAM for US artists. Some are credited "Work Projects Administration, on long-term loan to the Philadelphia Museum of Art from the Fine Arts Collection". I wonder how all that came about. When was the loan made? Did PMA get to choose or were they handed a pile of prints? Do you think you will be able to view any of their 62 prints that are not on view? It sounds very exiting. I hope the weather cooperates.

I very much like your idea of the Timeline of 20th Century Printmaking in America.  I’ve been sidetracked by some family health issues and have not been able to actively research printmaking over the last few months but I expect to get back to the work in earnest starting soon and I’d be very happy to add items to your timeline as I learn new things. In general, I love timelines as very useful tools in grasping a historical topic, getting a foothold.

(One of the aspects of printmaking that I plan to do more reading on is the movement from silkscreen printing as a commercial process exclusively and its transformation to a fine art medium and then, in the 1960’s a circling back to commercial art via Andy Warhol et.al. I’m just beginning to dive into this; I have much more to learn and in doing so I may realize that it’s a dead end but I’ll follow the path. This reading may produce some additional elements that I can contribute to your timeline.) I will also be happy to add to your talk page as I learn more. Thank you for asking.

Thank you for your good wishes on the PMoA archive work. I’m looking forward to my visit to their archives.  Among other papers, I will be seeing some of the curator/art collector Carl Zigrosser’s papers. My understanding is that his work there was a key part of how the museum came to hold one of the best collections of American prints.  Over the last few days I’ve been in touch with a very helpful and informative Digital Asset Librarian there. He sent me high quality images and Web ready jpegs that I can add to the article on my father. They are images of prints that were part of the WPA program and that are in the public domain. (I’m not sure how it works exactly but I think you may get a ping automatically when I add images to the article on my father, as you were the author of that article.) The librarian provided the details I will need to include when I add the images to identify the source.  I will try to do it exactly as the process requires. Once I get the hang of it, I will request more images from their library that I can add to other WPA Wiki articles, especially for the women artists who have not gotten their just due.

Also, your questions are interesting about how it came about at PMoA. I will try to get answers and get back to you.

I'm still learning on Wikipedia, and I made a rookie error last night when I was adding a couple of items to your timeline. I added two items that sourced from the fantastic book by Helen Lange, one of my favorites. I typed the info in for the first footnote then did 're-use' for the second citation. Then I changed the page number for the second one as appropriate. But I forgot that when I did that it automatically changed the page number of the other citation of Langa. This morning I fixed it by just re-entering the book info. I'm learning slowly. Sorry about that.

I should be able over the coming days and weeks to add quite a few items to your timeline. And some themes as well. If I enter any timeline items that don't seem appropriate to you just let me know. I'll learn as I go. I have lots of historical sources on the general topic so I hope to make lots of additions over time.

Hi, WomenArtistUpdates - Thank you. I added a few just now, one of which is actually about an Englishman, but I thought it relevant because he, in 1907, held the first patent for a silkscreen process, then I added the first American who advanced the idea in 1914. I hope the Englishman is ok to include, but I understand if you think I should delete him. I could switch him parenthetically to the entry on the American, if you wish. This is a fun process, and gets me to read through the pile of books I have sitting here. I'm looking forward to adding some points on Louis Lozowick because he was such an excellent lithographer. Rwarsager, by all means, put in information from England, especially in these early days. While it is in draft form we can put in anything we want. It is much easier to edit something down than to try to remember where you saw an interesting bit of info.

I was at the Phillips yesterday and saw, An Italian Impressionist in Paris: Giuseppe De Nittis. The last room had several monotypes, lithographs and intaglio prints by De Nittis and his friend, Degas. They did portraits of each other using dry point. So those guy were both exploring a way to reproduce their work, but also create art prints. Not germane to what we are doing, but still, once I start thinking about something it is everywhere. Hi, WomenArtistUpdates. You're very welcome. There should be some interesting things to add as we move into the 60's an beyond.

It's on interesting that you mention that exhibit. I'm not familiar with it specifically, but it sounds great. I'll enjoy studying it.

In general, some of the prints that were made going back several centuries, well, some of them are just breathtaking in their complexity and sheer artistry. A curatorial intern at PMoA that I met when he showed me some WPA prints a few months ago there - Jun Nakamura - curated a very interesting exhibit at the museum called: Macho Men: Hypermasculinity in Dutch and American Prints. Jun's expertise is mainly in 16th century Dutch prints. The exhibition, by the way, includes some WPA prints because there was quite a bit of muscular male imagery in the radical prints, depicting American workers. https://philamuseum.org/calendar/exhibition/macho-men-hypermasculinity-dutch-american-prints

This leads me to a question/suggestion for you. If it's beyond the scope of the timeline too much, I totally get that. Just want to mention it: I have a book called "The Complete Guide to Prints and Printmaking: History, Materials and Techniques from Woodcut to Lithography". It was published in 1981. It's rich in technical and practical information as well as some history. It has an excellent timeline going back to printmaking origins. My thought is that it might be interesting and a bit of fun to include a sort of pre-history in a limited timeline, separate from but leading into the main timeline, that might be called something like "The Roots of Printmaking from 800 A.D. to the Twentieth Century", with just the principal inventions and innovations that laid the groundwork for the burst of creativity in the 20th century. It would not be to take any emphasis off the twentieth century, of course, but simply to identify, briefly, the creative roots and fertile grounds from earlier times. If you like the idea I would gladly put this together, and verify the items in this book's timeline, after I have added to the main timeline.

The authors divide the events and activities by: Wood engraving, Linocut, Mexxotint, Aquatint, planographic processes/lithography, screen printing, photomechanical reproduction.

For example, some highlights that could be included in a pre-history type of timeline to complement the main timeline after completion are:

I don't mean to get ahead of ourselves, just wanted to raise the idea. I would, of course, check on the dates and details before adding anything to a timeline. Food for thought?

Although the art world was even more rigidly biased in favor of male artists in previous centuries than in the 20th, I would propose to dig for the names and backgrounds of women artists involved in printmaking developments, consistent with a principle that drives your work. One possible source for information like this would be Mr. Nakamura, the PMoA specialist in early printmakers, as well as the museum's archives.

Hi Rwarsager, The timeline of the history of printing is an interesting idea. You will need to be careful if you are using a timeline created for "The Complete Guide to Prints and Printmaking: History, Materials and Techniques from Woodcut to Lithography". That is the author's intellectual property. (Of course at the moment I can't find the official guidance on the Wikipedia site, but when I do I'll ping you). Have you had a chance to read through Printmaking? A timeline could complement that article.

I took a look at "Macho Men". Very nice stuff. I can't recall ever seeing Hercules depicted as an older gentleman. Goltzius has him ripped! I quite like Workman Pushing Four Bundles by Isadore Possoff and see they haven't got a page, so I'll get right on that if I can find another source to complement PMA.

Speaking of women, I don't think we are going to have to dig very deep to get a distaff angle on our timeline. It looks like several of the 1960s era Print shops were started by women. Any info provided by PMA would be delightful :)

Interestingly, when I was looking at art colonies in the United States one author noted that the main 19th and 20th American art colonies were either established or run by women. It could be possible to think that perhaps women are better a organizing collaborative events.

I was working on the timeline last night and wandered down the path of Barnet teaching others how to technically make prints. Then Blackburn etc.

I got side-tracked from that trying to ascertain when and where the first Robert Indiana "Love" print was created.

Good point about the intellectual property. Thanks.  I did read the Printmaking article on Wiki. That’s definitely helpful and there are some interesting points there.

Regarding art colonies, I find that them fascinating, in large part, I think, because I wish I could live on one. It’s interesting to read about how some of them developed as artists found city life, including in Paris, too stressful, expensive, and loud.  

I agree it’s quite possible (and I would add: likely) women are better at organizing collaborative events.

Regarding Blackburn, I might have mentioned this but a curator at the Met Museum is writing her dissertation in art history on him and several other interesting printmakers.  I’m looking forward to reading it. He was certainly a very interesting artist and printmaker. There are so many fascinating trails to wander off on in researching events for the timeline.

Another artist whose work I love is Louis Lozowick. He used to visit my father when we lived in northern NJ in the late 60's-1972 but of course I had no idea then what an interesting artist he was. And I very much hope to add some timeline events about Elizabeth Olds, Riva Helfond, and Ruth Chaney, three WPA-related artists. Olds actually did the first serigraph on the project, according to the PMoA curator and collector Carl Zigrosser. I want to add that to the timeline when I get the exact year, around 1938. As you may know, Riva Helfond taught Blackburn some screen printing techniques. (She was also a friend, though I don't have memories of meeting her.)

Regarding Warhol and my previous comments about hoping to establish some causation between his visit to Max Arthur Cohn's (a WPA painter) NYC printmaking studio and the subsequent relatively sudden rise to fame/iconic status of Warhol, I believe that's a dead end. Warhol discarded the National Serigraph Society's standards for creating silkscreens and went his own way, although he did like the nature of silkscreens being suitable for 'mass' production. Blake Gopnick's 2020 bio, 900 pages, of Warhol is fascinating but leads me to believe I was on the wrong track. The book, however, should yield some good timeline events related to Warhol's printmaking exploits.

Hi Rwarsager, I am wandering around in the 1970s, and among the history of "Master Printers". To quote the book If the decade of the 1960s was committed to developing and audience for prints, the 1970s were devoted to developing and expanding their market. For sure the difference from the beginning of the century to the end was the hand-off of the technical to the masters. 'Course I'll only say that on my talk page, because I lack the scholarly chops to correctly state that in the main space. Makes me glad we are working in the timeline format. It seems to be solving a world of problems. Andy Warhol remains problematic. The soup cans were screened onto canvas! Hi, WomenArtistUpdates. I agree about the timeline process. So far I'm confident in my entries to the timeline. I'm about to add one on Warhol based on comments in The Complete Printmaker (by Ross, Romano & Ross), which I've cited a bunch of times in various articles. I'm interested in what you will think of the point they make. I've become skeptical about some aspects of Warhol's role in screen printing but I'm not qualified to have a strong opinion. Much more reading for me to do on that. Yes, he printed on canvas and used photographic images. I'm not a fan of that approach but perhaps I'm biased!

I'm looking forward to my Feb 7 dive into the archives at PMoA. They have a box labeled National Serigraph Society, which the book I mentioned above states ceased to exist by 1962. I hope to learn much more next week.

I don't really know how public thank yous work on here, but I just had to express some gratitude for all your contributions on here. You recently created the article for Gail Shaw-Clemons, an amazing artist I was fortunate enough to learn about through an exhibition a few weeks ago. I went looking for more info about her, but there wasn't yet an article - but I did a similar search again today and the article you created popped up. It's just one example of literally thousands where I've tried to learn about a talented woman and have found more info thanks to your contributions, and I can't imagine how many others have experienced the same, many without knowing who helped them connect the dots. Hi 19h00s, Thank you for your very nice words! It is great to know my articles are being read. I have just started dipping my toe in the water of living people this year. The Renwick's anniversary show motivated me to cover some of living artists. I am learning so much. So many of the mid-to-late-career women artists' stories are similar to Shaw-Clemons' (and they deserve to be told while the subject can read it). Making art while earning the rent teaching or running workshops. Recognition comes after years of hard work. I think you were in on the conversation about "art + activism" at Women in Red. I am working my way through artists whose artists books are in the collection of the NMWA.

Have you read about the virtual editathon Crafting a Better Wikipedia: Women of color in the Renwick Gallery? Thursday, March 30, 2023 1 -3:30. I plan on going, hoping that events don't overtake.

Hi Netherzone! There is scant information about April on the web (though her stuff is gorgeous), and a simple Google query doesn't show a relationship. I'll spend some time trying to figure out via jstor and wiki library. I did find a wonderful photo of Ruth which I put in her infobox (fair use). How've you been? I haven't seen you on AFD recently. I don't know if you read the article in Signpost https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/Single/2023-05-08 under the subheading "Compromise with paid editors?" about the Axios article Wikipedia's influence grows, but the Axios article seems to has generated a big little blip in promotional articles. That is indeed a wonderful photo you found of Ruth Vollmer! And yes, April Vollmer's prints are incredible! I will also continue to look to see if there might be a connection between the two. I've been doing OK, thank you for asking; doing some traveling which has been fabulous and I saw some really great art.

I've backed off from AfD recently to focus a bit more on NPP and AfC. There's a lot to learn! I saw the Signpost & Axios articles you linked but have not read them yet, but definitely will. The problem of COI/UPE seems to be getting worse since losing several editors in the past couple years who were strongly anti-COI/UPE; and now DGG is gone. And AI is all the rage. When I was a newbie attending a WP event in NYC, I heard DGG speak about the problem of promotional editing, which really had an impression on me. His passing is a deep loss to the community and of course to his family and friends. Unfortunately I've seen too many good editors get chastised or blocked for calling out COI/UPE; and far too many COI/UPE editors getting away with using WP to push their POV or advertise themselves. This essay (that I learned about from Vexations) is good: WP:BOGOF, you've probably seen it, but if not, it's worth the read.

Thanks for the response and link to the essay Netherzone. I've spent the last few days learning about DGG and UPE. Very interesting and true thesis that fixing a bad editor's promo piece only encourages bad behavior. I have also been ruminating about ASG and how that is not possible when all clues point to paid editing. I still have some energy for this, so I will continue to monitor artists and cast my !vote. I can see reaching a point where I want to move on. It is annoying that it takes longer to get rid of an article than it does to create one. But, my unrealistic wish is that ALL editors would spend 20 minutes a week in their area of expertise in AFD and keep the process moving along.

I was impressed by DGG's tenaciousness and was sad to read of his passing.

I am not getting any more information on the Vollmers, but I suspect that they are not related. Vollmer is not an uncommon last name.

I am lucky to live in an area where art comes to me :) I can't revive a desire for travel (yet). But good on you for getting back on the road. There is so much I want to see in situ: Hagia Sophia, the Hermitage Museum, Mt Fuji and on and on.

I saw this on NPP, and am uncertain about her notability, as mostly I'm seeing primary sources (commercial galleries that show her work, an obituary in the Guardian written by her daughter,[1] etc.) Whenever you find a moment (no rush!) could you see if you have better luck finding independent sources. Malcolm Myers

Hello! Jason Howard here. Nice to "e-meet" you. I see that this user has undone an edit I made to the Atelier 17 page. I would like to discuss that and the Atelier 17 page itself, as there seem to be some major errors on the page which I did not address. I am pretty new to Wiki, so any guidance is appreciated. The one major error I see is that after WWII, Atelier 17 was RE-opened in Paris...and the page does not seem to say that -- and also many of the artists in the "New York" list actually didn't work in NY, but did in Paris after WWII -- Malcolm Myers being one of them. As we know with historic records, relying on ONE source list for things like this (a list of artists in a place) can be problematic. How can I help? Kind Regards, Jason

Hello @Jayho1970, I'm a fellow visual arts editor who has worked with WomenArtistsUpdates for some time, I'm just going to jump in here as WAU's talk page is on my watchlist. While I agree with you that Malcolm Myers was an important artist, I concur with WAU's analysis that several of your edits are inappropriate for Wikipedia. The encyclopedia is not a web host, (see WP:NOTWEBHOST) that's what personal websites are for, and I see that Myers still has a website, which I might assume that you, as the executor of his estate, are either the web host for or are in touch with the web host. That is where the bulk of the material you have tried to add to the WP article belongs.

Also, and equally important is that you need to abide by Wikipedia's guidelines for conflict-of-interest editors. You need to stop editing the article directly, as specified at WP:COI, and instead use the Edit Request System WP:EDITREQ to suggest edits which will be vetted by our volunteer editors. This is critical since there is probably also a financial stake in this estate which would make you a paid editor of a sort, meaning you should also abide by our guidance for paid editing. See: WP:PAID and also WP:PEW.

You ask, "How can I help?" You can help by abiding by our guidelines for COI editors and following the fundamental principles of WP [[WP:5P]. This is precisely how the integrity of the encyclopedia is preserved into the future. Thank you in advance. Netherzone (talk) 03:10, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

Idea

I know you are reluctant to participate in the Indigenous women's editathon, but you have amazing skill that could still help with it. I noticed that when TJMSmith added his article on Venida Chenault to the list, he was unable to add the flag for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation because it was uploaded as fair use. I've just finished Dorothy Davids and find we have no image at all for the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Nation Flag. I don't know if you have any interest in participating in this way, but I thought your artistic skills might help with the lack of flags. No worries if you aren't interested. Hi SusunW, I've looked at some of the examples of Flags of Native Americans of the United States. After looking at a few, it seems like the flags have been uploaded as "Own work", which puzzles me. Further investigation reveals that the tribal insignias are most likely[ https://www.uspto.gov/trademarks/laws/native-american-tribal-insignia trademarked]. Therefor I am extremely reluctant to upload any Indigenous flags to the commons. If a flag is uploaded as "fair use" it can only be used on the appropriate page. If you can point me to any addition guidance on the copyright status of tribal flags and insignia I will be happy to look through it. Note that I swapped out the brown star for the silver star for aesthetic reasons, but can easily change it back or to another. The globe image I got from the commons. Thanks Netherzone! I am so glad you are reading the articles. I saw your "thanks" in my notifications and was happy to see I had you a proofer. I am loving the mid-century modern research. I quite like the style too. I am particularly taken with the fabric artists of the period. I have been wading around in the mid-century after attending a Smithsonian Zoom lecture on Dorothy Liebes this summer. It was given in conjunction with the big show at the Cooper Hewitt. As I mentioned on the talk page, I have got a wonderful book to serve as tour guide, and am waiting for another book from interlibrary loan.

Changes to preparations for WIR Events

As you are the most active contributor to this and related pages, WomenArtistUpdates, I thought I should inform you directly that as a result of the new WIR page presentations, from now on it will be necessary to post our current events on the main WIR page, in addition to the Events page. This is because the old automatic transclusion process no longer functions. I have attempted to adapt the Ideas page accordingly but please feel free to improve my explanations if they are not sufficiently clear. May I take this opportunity to thank you for all the useful updating you consistently carry out in connection with our monthly events. Most of the repercussions were completely unexpected. Little by little, I think we've now sorted most of them out. Some of the features which caused problems dated right back to the beginning of the project. • New Page Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles. We could use a few extra hands on deck if you think you can help.
• Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; Wikipedia needs experienced users to perform this task and there are precious few with the appropriate skills. Even a couple reviews a day can make a huge difference.
• Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision (if it looks daunting, don't worry, it basically boils down to checking CSD, notability, and title). If this looks like something that you can do, please consider joining us.
