Why was it vandalism?

I noticed my edit, was called as vandalism by you. But it's not, because I live in Canby and we all call Barlow our "bitch", "ho", or "dirty trichinosis". Don't worry, those Barlowians are just fine about it. See, Canby has 8 fast food joints ( go ahead count them ) while Barlow barely has running water. They have a graveyard with Sam Barlow's body, Canby has a Safway and a Fred Myer. Thats right, we got two places of buy milk. Screw Barlow, that's right. We got post office, they can not afford one. List of museums in Oregon

Thanks for your edits to the list, the links to the Gorge, for instance, are just the kind of improvements I have difficulty with. My plan is to work on the list for the rest of the week. I still haven't decided which regions to put some museums in (that's why some are blank) because I wanted to start going through both the museum association website and the Explore Oregon feature of the state tourist website. So far, all the Region listings agree with both lists. Also to be done is to list the regions as in List of museums in Montana and List of museums in Idaho. I'll also put in website links for all the items without Wikipedia articles, add very brief descriptions at that point and add entries in the "Type" column (looking at the websites makes sure that's accurate, it's easy to mistake these). I normally work alone, and I'd expected just to get the job done in a week and hand it over to you guys, but if you'd like to help out or even take over from here, I'm fine with that (although it's better if we don't edit at the same time because of edit conflicts). This time is unusual for me -- I expect to be editing in the early evenings (Eastern Time). I notice that the Horace Baker item wasn't restored from our edit conflict. Yes, obviously it's not ideal to edit at the same time, but edit conflicts happen. We're a very active project so we often end up accidentally having conflicts. I'll take the article off my watchlist since you seem to prefer it that way. Don't worry, I always restore edit conflicts. It's done now. I'm done for now--I put the best guess regions in with a native Oregonian understanding, but as you have seen, there are some gray areas between Southern/Eastern, Central/Eastern, Valley/Portland, etc. (Though I have no idea who thinks Marion and Yamhill counties are in Eastern Oregon) I have some opinions about some of those, but I won't bore you with the details right now. I support using the Oregon Museum Association's region breakdown to settle differing opinions on regional borders, but I think it should be noted in the body of the article (as the source for the regional breakdown of List of Oregon state parks is noted in that article). Katr is right, though, that several of the listings were off (according to everyone's regional definition). I'll post a note on your (Norton's) talk page to make the borders of the OMA map less vague. Not a problem if you don't get them all right; we'll clean up when you're done. Thanks for all your work. Cheese and Brassens

The fromage box is from the French Wikipedia. I "substed" it so I could change it to link to the English cheese page instead of the French cheese portal. Yes, the French have a whole portal about cheese! The substing created an alarming amount of code, which you're welcome to copy, but I'm sure there's a much simpler way to recreate it. I hope that helps.

P.S. I see your French is better than mine--if you feel like it, check out the translation of George Brassens (the one linked to in the translation box, not the current article). I've been slowly working on it. I'm mostly trying to get it wikified, but I'm sure the syntax is weird in a few places. My best friend used to live in Sète, or I never would have heard of him... I did some revision of the working draft. I'm going to assume you have Word and am posting it here link deleted by Katr67 (can you please delete this link after you get the doc?--thanks). I put translation notes at the top of the Word doc. The track changes function in Word lets you accept/reject changes as you read (right-click for options). Got it, thanks. I love track changes. Sign up as one of the proofreaders of that article if you want. BTW, I believe Wikipedia style is to always go with British style when it comes to punctuation with quotations, and I would tend to use British English anyway on a French translation because they use British English there. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (novel)

Since I believe you did some work on the novel and being from Eugene I'm sure you read it, is it really based on the prison in Pendleton as it says at the beginning of the plot summary? Kesey worked at an asylum in CA, and I recall the novel set somewhere in the valley. So do you think this might be some Eastern Oregon urban legend, or is there truth to the matter? Thanks. Hrm. I've always heard it was based on the Oregon State Hospital. (And yes, people think Kesey actually worked there, but no, it was my mom who did for a few months. She has good stories.) I've never heard the Eastern Oregon State Hospital mentioned. I didn't know EOSH turned into a prison, I'll have to check, sometimes people think they're the same thing. (And probably metaphorically speaking they're sometimes right)... I don't believe it says where it is in the novel except Oregon, though they do go to the coast (in the movie it was Depoe Bay) so I'd assume in the valley. That and they talk about people coming down from Portland (hookers and such), which I know people are bad with geography, but that would seem odd to talk about people coming down to Pendleton from Portland. Dinos and size

I took a look at the dino people, and the article size list would be interesting. I don't know how much it would help in the FA drive, but it wouldn't hurt. I think the reason the dino WP is successful with the FA process is it appears they work together on prepping the articles, which likely means more participation at the FA review point. I think the OSC failed only due to lack of support, not because it wasn't quality. After the first nom I thought the WPOR problem was cooperation, which is why I started the COTW, so we'll see how it goes now with the 2nd nomination. If that doesn't get the job done, then I don't know what will. I'm hoping it doesn't turn into a "I like it this way better" versus "this part doesn't meet the MOS," which is what it is supposed to be about, otherwise it will never pass since everyone has a their own style preferences. Aha, sorry, you spoke about the templates so without looking at their history I assumed that you had produced them. I myself don't know much about template syntax; just take one that still exists and replace the current lines with the new ones, say replace all instances of "Clackamas County" with "Columbia County", "Oregon City" with the name of the county seat, and so on. That's all I do, and I know it works for me. By the way, about Mount Hood Village/Villages at Mount Hood: since it's now an official governmental body, at least to some extent, is there any reason to keep it at the current title? To me it would seem more sensible to call the entire article "Villages at Mount Hood, Oregon". Nyttend 21:19, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Yes, someone had made one or two that matched the {{Oregon}} template, then Floyds came along and started doing them in yellow like California's, so I put a stop to that, that's about I all I did. I'm rather indifferent to templates, but I try to keep them herded together when they arrive. I know I could copy and paste, I'll see how I feel about getting into the busywork zone tonight. Right now I have a raging headache... Re:Villages: I'm not convinced merging the two Mount Hood Whatever articles was a good idea, (the same issues with what the boundaries are--see the talk page), but the page rename makes sense, especially since I imagine at the next census the CDP "Mount Hood Village" would go away? Have you seen any other former CDP articles? (pretty unlikely since Wiki has only been around since 2002 or so, but wait, I guess there's a whole category about them: Category:Former census-designated places) How was this handled? The only other one I can think of is Santa Clara, Eugene, Oregon, which is now considered a neighborhood of Eugene, so very little needed to be said about its CDP status. Editing articles talk pages question

Since the talk page for each article is for discussing improvements to the article is it okay for editors to remove comments and sections that are not discussing improvements to the article?

For example The Amazing Race 12 talk page has comments about Mirna's predictions about the race, which is something that belongs on a fan website not on the talk page. Hello! I'm a fan of Kate Wilhelm's work and I've tried to make some improvements to this article. After checking the article's history and looking up the contributors I discovered that you're a specialist in matters Oregonian. Perhaps you have access to some sources that could add in some details that are out of my reach, such as the details (in precis) of her first marriage and names/birthdates of her children? Question: I noticed Oy vey on your user page. Is "what you want to do about it" to gradually poke through and correct all the "reigns" that should be "reins"? Or if there's anything else special I should know about the mini-project. (I tried look up Wikignome but you see what I found!)

Bug: I've tried several times to add this comment by clicking on your "Leave me a message here" in the box at the top of your page - but when I do, then when I try to "Save page" it tells me I am not logged in! The first time it did this I logged in again, then came here very carefully (being sure each new move showed me as "Logged in"), and....it happened again! Several times. Ah, Bugland....

Hi Martha! I was chipping away at it quite some time ago, but I got bored. There are so very many of them. I have a more thorough explanation here. As I recall, I was using AWB and just changing the one word, though AWB makes other changes automatically. I think I just summarized it as reigns-->reins. WikiGnoming is pretty fun with AWB if you haven't tried it. You just need to ask for permission. Hmm. I wasn't aware of the bug, since I don't usually start topics on my own page. I'll have to check that out. I haven't updated the code on that box in a long time, and I think they changed the little "+" that used to be at the top of the page, which is what I based it on... Hi again (I'm in a very busy time so didn't catch your replies - thanks though) - I just tried clicking the "here" thing again, before doing it. (Just to be sure I hadn't made it up!) I'm using a PC (with Windows XP and Firefox) and sure enough, when I click on "here", the top of the page no longer has my user stuff, and shows "Log in or create and account". I do NOT have "remember me" checked, and I used the "secure login".

On the Gnome and homonym stuff - maybe I'm just exhausted by the weekend (I'm certainly that!) but I don't think I want to get into it in a major way at this point. Working from (or generating and then working from) a search list is something I could imagine doing a little of, but signing up and learning how to use a new tool....makes all those things I really Should Be Doing look pretty attractive! feedback notice and facts

I have found repeated inaccuracies and holes in the area of Pacific Northwest Insects. I am not a professional in the field but I am a woodsman and a 6th generation 52 year old resident of the Puget Sound area. I know what Crane Fly is and how large they become. The article is obviously in error. When I mentioned the size of these pests listed to household members etc it was greeted with great amusement. You may know Oregon, but you certainly have not spent a summer on Puget Sound it you have not encountered Crane Flies approaching the size of Dragon Flies. The creepy s---ts appeared here in the early 70's and have been growing in size each year from much the size of a large mosquitos to the Battlecruisers we have today. Frankly, I do not care if Wiki looks like an ass. So please leave the article as I found it. Yep, 8 days ago is ancient history for me :) So, I see the problem with your edits. You weren't signed in, and you didn't provide an edit summary or a citation to a reliable source for the increase in number. Anonymous vandals do subtle vandalism like changing a couple numbers all the time and the crane fly article is the target of a great deal of vandalism. I'll post a welcome template on your page so you can learn more about how Wikipedia works and that will give instructions on how to sign up for an account, if you choose. I agree the muthas are creepy, but unless you can find a citation for the size increase, your observations are what is classified as original research. I know that WSU and the State of Washington have excellent entomologists, and if there were crane flies the size of B-52 bombers, they would love to hear about it, so perhaps you could contact someone in one of those agencies who could help you find the appropriate references. plagiarism in another language

My understanding (as a sometimes-translator) is that it is not copyirght infringement to translate something. Everything centers on the use of the material made. Translations often become new creations. Since wikipedia is supposed to work on a different principle afaik, cooperation, maybe you should contact the wiki translator directly? If it IS a copyright issue, i.e., your original material (I can't tell from the post), tell the translator to knock it off post-haste. It probably falls under plagarism (although wikipedia doesn't seem to enforce this policy very stringently, at least not until it is brought to someone's attention). First read Coquille people, then read Coquille Indian Tribe and Confederated Tribes of Siletz then check in with the Coquille Tribe and the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz. I have no personal knowledge of any Coquille tribal members literally living Coquille, Oregon, but according to the articles they do live in the general area. Why do you ask? BTW, where are you from? Since you are the former mayor of Lafayette, Oregon, I'd suggest you read about conflict of interest. If you look at the article's page history, you will see that the link isn't going away, it was removed (eight times!) because it does not comply with our external links guidelines. Also, if you had read the notices placed on your talk page, you would see that "Inappropriate links include (but are not limited to) links to personal web sites, links to web sites with which you are affiliated..." Wikipedia is not a place to promote any particular idealogy, nor is it a soapbox. Also your sole contributions to Wikipedia are to add the link to your site, which here on Wikipedia is considered the behavior of a spammer. See also:

Hmroo? I think you are mistaken about what an edit war is. Unless you've reverted my changes already. Did you? That might be considered the first salvo in an edit war. You should also assume good faith. Why do you think I thought you added the non-notable people? I didn't say you did. Some of them have been on the list for a long time and I finally got around to it cleaning up. Sometimes seeing someone working on something I have on my watchlist gives me the incentive to do some long-needed work. Oh and for the record, having a record contract does not make a person notable--see the notabilty guideline for bands. The general consensus for articles associated with WikiProject Oregon (which you should feel free to join!) is that lists of notable people should include only people who already have an article on Wikipedia. This cuts down on the frequent spam/advertising/vanity entries that we are constantly removing from such lists. Thanks for your work on the article. Let me know if you need any more information. Ah, I see you blanket-reverted all my changes, which included a needed revision to the editor's note at the top of the section (people really don't get alphabetization--see the Julia Anne Robertson entry), a tag calling for more references as much of the article is unreferenced, some formatting changes which included redirecting the names of certain band members to their band, removing an actress who only has one acting credit and no other notability, the aforementioned singer, and a few other redlinks two of which have been there for at least six months. (And as much as I respect the McChesney family, I'm not sure Bill, rest in peace, is notable). You might disagree about the notability of the singer, not sure if you care about the others or not, and this is certainly negotiable, but it sucks to blanket revert other useful changes. In point of fact, you were doing blanket revisions to the changes that I made. You were starting an edit war. I am trying to add information to WIkipedia; you are trying to remove it. Furthermore, I believe that arranging the alumni chronologically made more sense than alphabetically. It is not about class, but about the passage of time. No cared about class during high school, much less after. Hi, I don't own the South article, you might want to argue for the inclusion of Robinson on the article's talk page. The list isn't for people "of interest" it is for people who are considered notable by Wikipedia standards. Though I'm sure she was a very nice person, I don't think she meets the criteria. You can read about notability here: WP:NOTE. If you think she would pass the notability criteria, create an account and write a well-referenced article about her, but remember that Wikipedia is not a memorial. As for Payne, if you click on the link you will see there are two actors by that name. Is there a third who went to South? Is she notable? Since there aren't any references, that link should probably be removed. I won't be working much on the article anymore however. High school articles are fraught with peril and doomed to not measure up to Wikipedia standards I'm afraid. I did the best I could, but it's too much of a hassle. WP:ORE tagging

To save a bit of typing (for AWB?), the class=template, class=category and class=portal may be omitted to {{WikiProject Oregon}} when it is placed in those namespaces. A naked template works just as well in all those, except I think Portals process an importance parameter.

It seems you embraced the image request categories I proposed. Do you have a suggestion for regional areas like where Barton, Oregon and Buxton, Oregon are? They seem a bit far out to be Portland region, but Willamette Valley seems silly. —EncMstr (talk) 05:47, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

re: Portal. Cool, thanks. I figured I'd tag first and ask questions later, since the portal-class didn't seem to quite fit into our new scheme. Re: image categories--yes, I was being BOLD! I think Barton is close enough to civilization to count as Portland region, but once you start getting into the mountains and the timber region of Columbia county (Manning, Vernonia, Timber, Clatsakanie, etc.), I think those places should probably be "Northern Oregon Coast Range"--Would the "Northern Coast area" be too much of a stretch or should there be another category? I think the rest of the Coast Range is more easily sorted into Coast vs. Valley. Thanks for all the work on the template--sorry I wasn't better at explaining my vision! I got Gwen Gale to restore it. I'm guessing that the building is mostly of significance today architecturally speaking, or maybe because of the impact the monastery had on the region or something. Your sources are great (it wasn't a copyvio delete, it was an asserting importance issue), but try and make clearer early on why it's important, at least so people who aren't interested in this sort of thing like we are can tell. Music of Oregon

Latarski: Seems like we should be able to find enough to establish notability, although being a musician it's hard to find actual articles via Google amidst all the cd-store and MP3 sites.

Classical: There's already articles on the various Eugene classical outlets, but I'm not sure how much significant they would be in relation to a general article on music in Oregon. More worthy of inclusion, methinks, would be Tomas Svoboda, the Portland-based composer.

Other Eugene stuff: Dan Siegel grew up in Eugene, went to UO, and spent the first few years of his career here. Trey Gunn also went to UO and released local recordings here before hooking up with Robert Fripp and eventually becoming a member of King Crimson for several years, but I doubt if that fully qualifies him as an "Oregon musician". The Robert Cray Band started out in Eugene. Plenty of other good and bad bands, but I can't think of much else that would notable and/or verifiable.

I caught one or two solo shows (neither at Maude Kerns) during that time and the farewell performance of The Magic If right before he left to study with Fripp, and I still have the tapes he released back then. Oh my, I am having such a flashback. This reminded me of the late, great Robert Christie. (R.I.P. Robert, Denise, Ted and John) I don't know if you remember the house fire, on Halloween in 1988 or so on Patterson? Robert gave me authentic smoke-damaged James Thurber book from their apartment. I wish I still had that. So I was looking for stuff on Robert and I ran across this treasure trove of 1980s Eugene scene videos from Steve Nordby. Check out this Snakepit video: it gives me chills. Various members of Snakepit (like Mike Johnson) went onto greater things, of course. Here is Robert in Some Velvet Sidewalk. Also check out when Steve Perry wanted to sound like R.E.M. (this is a reunion show) Nobody would believe it if they weren't around back then. Tim went on to the Best Kissers in the World and we all know what happened with Dan and Steve. After discussion with the editor who created the article, it has been decided to remove the red text. It wasn't a case of owning the article, but getting consensus. The question was flagged up on the article's talk page long before you changed it without discussion. Well, generally I don't discuss basic copy editing and manual of style edits, as these for the most part don't need consensus. If I did, I would get a lot less work done here. Like I said, this didn't appear to be a good use of WP:IAR (per WP:MOSCOLOR). I didn't think to check the talk page because having seen a lot of well-intentioned but goofy formatting, it seemed like it was a case of that. I was thinking, "well, so the iconic color for John Deere is green, Catepillar is yellow...", and that this could set a very very bad precedent. She seems to have stopped for now. I think mostly she is going after Qworty's edits, because the article I prodded that she deprodded is a pretty clear case of non-notability and I've never encountered her before, and I doubt very highly anyone would consider my edits to be unreliable. I think the only ones she deprodded were the articles to which Qworty added a {{prod2}} tag like Zena Timber. It looks like several admins are keeping an eye on the situation, since she's very close to getting blocked for incivility or disruption. In the meantime, since the prods can no longer quietly run their course, the best thing to do, if you think the deprodded articles still merit deletion, is to take them to Afd, which is the next step in a contested prod, whether or not the deprodding was improper. At Afd many more uninvolved editors can chime in, and the articles will either be improved or they will be deleted after a thorough discussion, and most of the time it's hard to argue with that. Well, wording like "our world-class search marketing services" have to go. Encyclopedias need to be written in the third person and "world-class" is not coming from a neutral point-of-view. Most of the information about the founders is filler. The article should be about the company, not the owners, unless they are somehow notable. I also see that all the references are either from your website, or are press releases or trivial mentions. Articles on Wikipedia need to have third party citations to reliable sources. As the article currently stands, an editor would be completely justified in sending it for deletion. There is nothing in the article that indicates the company is notable. Reliable third party sources would be an article (not just a mention) in Portland Business Journal, or better the Oregonian. See WP:CORP for more information. With sentences like "The company’s SEO services add relevancy elements to Web sites that can be recognized by search engine algorithms in order to generate Natural search listings", well, I believe all SEO's do that, and since we have an article on SEOs, people can click on that to find out more. So having a sentence like that in the lead makes the article sound like a sales brochure. Like I posted on your talk page, it's best if you declare any conflict of interest up front. I see you are the director of the SEO. Be sure to read our business FAQ also. Call me cynical but when an SEO posts an article about itself, well, that's all part of their business, yes? Remember that Wikipedia is not here to provide free advertising space. I see you have a page at AboutUs. If this article is deleted, concentrate on expanding that page--that's what they are there for--and wait until your company is notable enough for someone else to write the article. If all else fails, check out "SEO Tips & Tactics From a Wikipedia Insider" from respected editor Durova to learn how not to run afoul of our COI and spam guidlines. Godevening I have a ask abut username and change it to a globale name. If I weren't assuming good faith, that would make me think you are interested in using the article to promote her work, and Wikipedia is not here to provide free advertising space. But I'll assume good faith for now, so if she has been cited in the Oxford Dictionary, then all you have to do is use the citation in the article, which I see you have. These citation guidelines should also help. To indicate notability you will need to provide a few more reliable, non-trivial, third-party sources. See our notability criteria for more information. I see you're trying to make the article more neutral, keep it up! Since you seem to know the subject ask her if her work has been written about substantially in any reliable source publications, for example the Statesman Journal, better yet the Oregonian, and even better yet, in national publications. Generally when people remove wikimarkup from articles, it sets off our vandalism senors, which tends to make us disregard valid additions. But for future reference it is best if you can cite individual facts using footnotes instead of using general references. (See WP:CITE for help.) This helps out future editors of the article. And actually, you can't cite yourself as a source (see WP:COI) but you can certainly make suggestions on the talk page about changes you'd like to see on the article. But it sounds like Wikipedia may not be the best venue for you. Good luck with your book! Please take any further discussion to the Warner Mountains talk page. I've alerted other editors about the article. Things are a little slow around here because it is summer, but the article is likely to be improved soon. List of nature centers in the United States

Hi, I saw your tag for this article as a directory, but it is really meant as a list of nature centers. I don't think this list qualifies as such as I understand the definition in Wikipedia. Hopefully, over time all of these organizations will get Wiki articles. Where such articles exist they are linked, but in the meantime this is a good way to get a full list of nature and environmental education centers. Deletion of Lisa LaRue from List of Native American musicians

Why would you delete Lisa LaRue, 2008 Oklahoma Music Awards' Native American Artist of the Year, when lots of the people listed on this page as "Native American" musicians aren't even real Indians? Why 'non-notable?' In Houghton-Mifflin's Reader's Companion to U.S. Women's History, under the Music section, she is listed along with Buffy Ste Marie in the first paragraph as a pioneer in Native American women's music??

In order to keep down the promotional/vanity entries on that list, as with many others, the entries should be notable enough for a Wikipedia entry, which means they should already have an article, not a redlink. I don't know why you feel singled out. I'm not the only one who watches that page. Care to give me diffs? Yes, I did see that you reverted your own edit, but did not have the patience to customize anything to that effect. Like I said in my edit summary, you would lose your sense of humor over the whole Colbert thing too. Would you like me to post the hundreds of reversion diffs? Everyone in WikiProject Oregon has done dozens of them, and edits like yours could make the whole cycle start up again. We even had a whole side controversy about pre-emptively semi-protecting the page when Jimmy was going to appear on Colbert. It was not pretty. The "joke" templates are not in main article space and main article space is not the place to have fun (seriously), except for those of us who think improving articles is fun. That was quite a long reply. I am perfectly aware of the troubles vandals cause - you want to see my reverts at A, K, T, etc? They've been going on for the past week! You didn't really have to do anything, and it was reverted within the time-frame of 10 seconds. Plus, you accused me of starting a whole cycle of "Oregon's Portugal", but I seem to see a couple of those cropping up within the last 500 diffs.

You say that it becomes tiring to revert so many Portugal edits - but I don't see why you keep on putting this over me? I reverted it myself within the time-frame of 10 seconds; while other anons did not revert it themselves or get a template. Odd, isn't it?

I wrote my earlier note in haste. I, too, have been saying uh-BEE-qwa, but I have no support for that. I'm completely clueless about the phonetic alphabet; even if I know the correct way to say something, I don't know how to write it phonetically. On the other hand, I see other things I could do to improve the Abiqua Creek article. I will probably come back to it if I can tear myself away from a zillion other projects and squeaky wheels. Bend population

The text you quoted is my source for removing the PSU data. The Census Bureau likewise issues annual population estimates (Oregon's are here), so it's not as if the Census Bureau's latest data are eight years old. I don't see the risk of people pulling numbers out of thin air as that important: surely someone could arrange to watch all Oregon municipalities (I don't have time to do it myself, partly because I'm already watching every community in HI, MT, VT, and WY) and prevent any such unreferenced estimates. What, by the way, do you mean by "partnered" with the Census Bureau? There have been (don't ask me where; I see thousands of municipality articles, so I've not a chance at remembering) one or two municipalities, perhaps in Iowa, where the Census Bureau either sponsored or officially certified a local census in 2005, which certainly would pass the WP:CITY requirements. Does the Census Bureau officially promote the use of the PSU data, or otherwise mention it? I'm not trying to challenge or bring up tiny little points: it's just that I'm unfamiliar with the PSU data, and curious how it would fit the WP:CITY requirements, as I don't think there's any need to IAR in this case. I believe I'm the person who reverted your changes. First question is what does WP:CITY have to do with this? Does that project own all city articles? The PSU data passes WP:RS, and frankly that should be the end of it. The PSU data (if you read the link provided) is the official estimates for Oregon, and it is more recent than the data you wanted to use. I'll fix it myself, but just for future reference, the round of 16 does not equal the 16th round.. it's a way to say the "Round where only 16 competitors were left"

1 Year of the Collaboration of the Week

References on Nike Oregon Project

Hi Katr! I wanted to learn more about References formats, which appear to be not so consistent. Your changes today were to some references which had been unchanged since the Oregon Project article was first written, which got me curious. I should mention that I don't disagree with anything you did, I just want to learn the right way, since I'm a rookie at Wiki (and you're obviously a veteran).

The format you've used seems to make the user perform extra steps to get at the reference information. I guess my questions would be: 1. Why delete the text Wired Magazine from that section? IMO, it's marginally more helpful to see the source without having to mouse over the number. My preference as a user would be to add text labels to every reference, rather than the other way around. 2. The way things were in the previous version, I was able to see the reference where the footnoted text appears (by mousing over the number in the body of the article). Why is it preferable to make the user travel down the page to see the reference link? No big deal, to be sure, but it seems to make the process slightly less convenient from a usability standpoint. Again, an extra step for the user.

"Because of the difficulties in associating them with their appropriate full references, the use of embedded links for inline citations is not particularly recommended as a method of best practice and is not found in featured articles." I don't always do everything perfectly the first time, but I like to make progress. I added ref tags but I didn't fill out the citation information because I was being lazy. References sections using the <ref></ref> tags, which renders the refs as footnotes is preferable to the embedded links that were there previously. Go ahead and add text labels to the references if you wish. There is also a bot that eventually comes around and converts the bare references to titled links. The most basic info to add would be the source and title, it's also good to add the date and the date the info was accessed if it is an online source. See WP:CITE for more information on citations. I often use citation templates when I have the time, but they aren't necessary (and you can leave out the fields you don't use). However, because links go dead all the time, it is nice to fully cite a source, if it was originally a print article, with the publication date, author name, etc., so it will be easy to verify the info later. The Wired link was rendered redundant by the footnoted links. I hope that helps! Katr67 (talk) 23:22, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Katr! A thousand apologies, but I have been trying to add the text parts of the References as discussed, and have managed to mess things up. The former third reference (about Jerry Schumacher) is okay; the Altitude for All reference came out okay; but the former fourth reference (about Matt Tegenkamp) got combined with the third one somehow, and I can't seem to separate the two. I've compared the HTML side by side and can't find any discrepancies in the way the code lays out. Could you help me figure out what I did wrong?

Thank you for your assistance so far and your patience, and for welcoming me to the community. I have two areas of comment:

1. I'm not sure what the reference made to "ugly little school logo" was about that appeared on your talk page. I believe you are the one who added the logo, and I appreciated it. I don't see how that logo is a violation of the general Wikipedia format, so I don't know why someone raised an objection.

2. You have left intact the most important part of my recent edit to "Medford, Oregon", which was to mention that NOAA lists the area as the least windy metro area in the U.S. (although that's hard to believe considering some of the windbags who live here!). My primary reason for the edit was to counteract a really nasty vandalism message that superimposed itself when the Medford article popped up; it proclaimed itself to be "King of the Zodiac" or some such nonsense while the remaining 90% was written in Cyrillic characters. Since the vandalism appeared to be coming from an outside source by way of some sort of malware, I looked for something I could type into the article that would change it enough to remove it as a target, hence my mention of the wind speed. There may be a better way to deal with such attacks, but I am not yet experienced enough to know what they are.

Regarding your removal of the reference book I used to cite the low windspeed, I apologize for being so sloppy. I was simply trying to show a "good faith effort" that the information had a legitimate source. I'm still trying to figure out how to properly include the citation so that the footnote number appears. Hal Wing (talk) 18:00, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

The "Zodiac" message was from a vandal who had modified several templates that are used in multiple articles - which resulted in the message being spammed to every article using those templates. An admin fixed the templates involved and blocked the vandal. Once the template was fixed, it was taking a while for the fix to be processed through all the articles that used the templates - because there were so many affected. Once that fix had been made, you can try clearing your cache, or clearing the server cache, or any edit to an article (even a null edit) will force the fix to be processed for that article. --- Barek (talk • contribs) - 18:52, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Me an' plants...

I'm a writer (well, I write anyway). After finishing my present fiction piece (and hopefully selling it! It can be viewed at //maxdname.wordpress.com under the title: What Little Girls Are Made Of) I plan to finish a non-fiction tome bearing the working title: Green Space and Stream Stewardship Within the Vancouver-Seattle-Portland-Eugene Corridor. The gist of it deals in the ideology of natives versus non-native for zero maintenance, high rainfall capture, and aesthetics i.e. native does not equal weed and turf doesn't hold water. This should also include the foremost methods for the "care and feeding" of a natural stream as opposed to the urban planning ideal of flushed the system at the end of the rain event (some people do have small streams within their property). My credentials are far ranging: U of Oregon BS Geography, PSU Urban Planning coursework completed for MS Urban Planning (I simply don't have the temperament to act in that function). For almost a decade I have worked removing invasive non-native species while collecting and propagated natives which I plant in my own back yard, abutting Tryon Creek State Natural Area. I have over 150 native species nearby. I have found myself at odds with many "official" agencies and groups. Work gets done by concerted effort and focus on the problem regardless of the "party line." In this regard Tryon Creek people let me do what I want and leave me alone. I am also involved in the work at Mary S. Young Park (the perfect alignment of bureaucrats, staying behind a desk, while giving the "worker bees" what they ask for!). Dave Kruse the powerhouse behind that project deserves a medal. Lastly: upon sale of my first book (if God exists, and has a sense of humor) I'd like to create a loose Wikidatabase of authors (if I can include my name in that esteemed role) to allow some assistance between established Oregon writers and those climbing the latter [sic] (that's a pun). Tiny, hair-splitting categories that hold one or two things usually make me cranky. The human death ones kind of crack me up. What a strange way to categorize something! Note that categories rarely make me amused/cranky enough to propose their deletion, and that I always add them to the project so that we can keep an eye on them. I promise I almost always limit snarky comments to categories, 'cos who looks at category page histories besides us category nerds? I promise I won't snark about any of your categories anymore.
