Hey, Eddie. The expected has occurred - I've gotten bored with just nitpicking at prose like a moron. Any tips on what to look for in an A-class? I want to actually be useful, contribute more. Thanks, —La PianistaSpeak · Hear 05:00, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
Hahahaha I love you :) You can look for reference issues (are they formatted correctly with access dates, etc.?)...otherwise, anything more requires a decent knowledge of the topic or actually going to the sources and checking them to make sure that the article is in sync with them. —Ed 17(Talk / Contribs) 05:09, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Oh wow, yeah. Well, I was brought up in a liberal household, and regularly indulge in MSNBC. Whatever the content of your edits, there definitely should have been some discussion after reverting: Bold-revert-discuss cycle anyone?
But what to expect? Conservapedia is not Wikipedia, after all. I think that there's no way to flat-out deny the slight liberal-whatever bias in Wik'edia, but ...agh, whatever. There isn't any reason to force the mushroom back up their throats, right? Oh, bother! -I'm not making any sense now, am I? Icy // ♫ 22:13, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
(<=) - lol, I wish. Nothing like that there :) I was brought up in a conservative household and I still am - a "conservative democrat" one site called me when I took a test - but realism is stronger than that. Conservapedia just flat-out denies history and ignores the real world...it gives Christians a bad name, IMHO. I don't know if there is a liberal bias to Wikipedia, but if there is, at least we have the truth here 99.9% of the time. —Ed 17(Talk / Contribs) 22:29, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

We have 31 days left, just one month left in the first round. The first two months have already produced spectacular results, and we're hoping to see a great race to the end of the round. Get those nominations in for them to count for this round, but remember that any nominations that are not promoted before the end of this round, will still count for round two if you make it. We unfortunately had another contestant, What!?Why?Who?, withdraw this week and we wish them the best.
We saw some big jumps in content upgrades this week! We saw 33 new good articles, 3 new featured articles and lists, 8 featured pictures, 5 featured sounds, and 24 did you know items. (Also note, there are 111 good articles and 222 did you know items as of this newsletter). Keep it up during the final push to round two. GARDEN, iMatthew // talk, and TheHelpfulOne

I am here now, though I do not retain my stars I do retain my sense of purpose. Eventually, it will be the fate of those current coordinators to leave the committee and allow the next generation to step up. I have in a sense done this with my retirement. Moreover, I have served as a advisor since my return, helping with the day to to operations. As I noted at my rfa, a position of power or influnce is a great thing, but if you are not enough without it, you will never be enough with it. The hallmark of a truely great person, then, is his or her ability to walk away from a position of influence or power and still retain the respect of those whom they once worked with. TomStar81 (Talk) 02:17, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Now, all teasing aside, you definitely still have the respect of everyone who you have worked with. Definitely. No need to worry about that. —Ed 17(Talk / Contribs) 02:23, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

The Military history WikiProject Newsletter : Issue XXXVI (February 2009)
This month has been interesting for MILHIST, as we reorganized a few departments. The Outreach Department has been replaced by the tabs at the top of our totally redesigned project page; thanks to Kirill for the design and Bellhalla for the logo. We also created the Academy, a hub for practical advice about creating, editing, and reviewing quality content. All project members are cordially invited to fill in some of the red links, and new ideas are always welcome.
As you can see on the right, our A-class and featured content is growing quite rapidly; these numbers have now gone up by 45 for the second straight month! Great work! In addition, thanks go out to those who recently helped in reducing the A-class nominations backlog. Reviewers are still needed; if you feel up to it, please stop by and leave comments on an article—every review helps!
Article alerts are now available both for the entire project (on the status page) and for each task force (on the task force page).
The Military history coordinator elections, to appoint coordinators for the period April–October 2009, take place this month. If you are thinking of standing as a candidate, the schedule is as follows:
Nomination period: 00:01 Sat 7 March - 23:59 Fri 13 March
Voting period: 00:01 Sat 14 March - 23:59 Sat 29 March
Awards and honors
Ian Rose has been awarded the WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Australian military history articles (including four Featured Articles, an A-Class article, and four Good Articles), his highly civil and collaborative editing, and his willingness to provide advice and assistance to other editors.
MisterBee1966 has been awarded the WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves in recognition of his contributions to seven featured lists on German military awards during the Second World War, and for contributing to four good articles and being instrumental in promoting three of them to A-Class status.
Raul654 has been awarded the WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves in recognition of his contributions to six current Military History Featured Articles, his flexibility in managing the "Today's featured article" list to accommodate relevant main-page appearances, and his generosity in providing many images for our visual library.
The Land has been awarded the WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves in recognition of his significant contributions to the area of maritime warfare, as he has authored six of the seven articles in the "history of the battleship" series, with four of them now being featured.
They were in fact the latest model 50-cal guns.. See my addition & reference on the 14"/50 caliber gun page - it quotes from the Official US Navy report. The 45-cal myth appears to be an error that keeps going round.. Rod. Rcbutcher (talk) 23:39, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

As you can see, this is about as bare-bones of a newsletter as you can get. The reason for this is that the newsletter has and will be inactive, but we wanted to get a last one out detailing the current state of our project. The truth is that WP:NOVELS is in bad shape. Only a few editors are active in editing inside of our project. Our Peer Review section, this newsletter, our task forces, and our collaboration center are all dead; although a collab is picked each month, not a lot of work seems to occur.
Out of these ashes, we are proposing that the project start an A-class review system. This will hopefully bring people together for reviewing, and will perhaps get the project some sorely-needed attention from others who can come in and help rehabilitate it. Final plans have not been established, but we will see about getting a mass message out to all of the project members if/when it is set up; discussion of this can be conducted on the General Forum.
This newsletter will probably be the last we will have for a long time, as neither Ed nor Kevinalewis have the time to create these every month. However, if any editor is willing to step up and create one, we would be glad to assist you in making it up.
If you don't want to create a newsletter, but would still like to help, there are plenty of things that can be done. As detailed on the right, the Novels Peer Review section has four articles needing attention, but only one review has been done; one from May, one from November, and one from December have not had any comments left on them. Please consider helping out there; even a 15-minute review would help.
Talk between Kevinalewis and the_ed17, the two project coordinators, has led to us deciding to suspend elections for coordinators indefinitely. With the exceedingly low amount of participation in the last elections (five total votes), we do not feel that it is worth it to try to set up another election.
20 positions remain unfilled at the Job Centre. Members who are active project contributors are encouraged to apply even if they can only do a position for a short time.
Collaboration of the Month
This month's Collaboration has been selected by popular vote and is : Shantaram (novel). The next collaboration is due for selection in April, so cast your vote.
Peer review and assessment news
Peer Reviews are still open for four articles – Sector General, Petals of Blood, Scenes of Clerical Life, and Flowers for Algernon. Feel free to submit any novel-related article that you are working on for review, but please consider stopping by and reviewing an article; we need more reviewers for our articles (there is a PR that has been open since May)!
Recently a new worklist had been created and quietly arrived, the Cleanup listing which gives a fairly comprehensive hit list of "novels" related articles that have been tagged for something or other.
Since then a new Article alerts listing has also been added of more topic and "urgent" items worthy of our attention.
This has been an automated delivery by BrownBot (talk) 17:12, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
Okay that makes since, but how are we to go about Reassessing all of the articles unless we elect a group of coordinators or create a seperate branch totally devoted to the reassessing of Start and B-Class articles to C-Class articles. But the way you described it no B-Class articles will be moved down to C's because they meet all 5 of the criteria it would just be Start Articles being moved up to C-Class articles. (Is that what you meant?) Lord R. T. OliverThe Olive Branch 01:23, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
Yes. All B-class articles are B. They don't need to be moved down. :) And, with the automation, I believe that even if "start" is in the "|class=" spot, it'll still appear and be categorized as a C if it fails only 2 B-class criterion(excepting B2, which is an instant-fail). —Ed 17(Talk / Contribs) 01:28, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
If you can express these things to the members of the WikiProject, and the other Coordinators I think they would possibly understand that the C-Class could be a good thing, but there are still a few cons that people might not be able to get over. Hi ed! Thanks for the copyediting of the Battle of the Utus. As for your reasonable remarks:
(The) Army in Emperor's Presence. Fixed.
Circus factions (this is the name modern scholarship uses for calling them when "Blues and Greens is not used): Besides their function in the hippodrome and involvement in rioting, the circus factions (mainly Greens and Blues) of any large Byzantine city were invaluable for mobilizing the city's manpower (that is, the latter could not be effectively used without them), in periods of crisis. My main problem is that there is no article for them to link (it's a shame).
Urgent: hmm, I think one of my references used it (I'll check it again). I am not a native speaker, so I have difficulties with copyediting things.
Thermopylae: there is no information in the sources and the modern scholarship other than the location itself. I don't expect that there will be a wikipedia article for it.
Callinicus: he is an obscure saint biographer without a Wikipedia article for him (however the name Callinicus is quite common) and I don't think there will be one in the near future. How do you think we should mention him? Would "saint biographer" be proper description? --Dipa1965 (talk) 06:38, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
No problem - it was an interesting article!
How about you add that information into a note with a source? ;)
It's alright! Even those who are native speakers can have trouble writing well!
I didn't think there would be, but I was trying to point it out on the off chance that there was one and you had forgotten to add in a link :)
Well...what exactly is a "saint biographer"? Someone who writes biographies of saints? —Ed 17(Talk / Contribs) 15:12, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
Nice, I'l look on these! As for the "saint biographer", your guess was right but the term really sucks. Fortunately, I just found reliable sources mentioning the identity of Callinicus . He was a monk, sometimes called "Callinicus of rufinianae by the scholars.--Dipa1965 (talk) 18:05, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
20:41, 9 March 2009 Twas Now (talk | contribs) (171,240 bytes) (this is supposed to be a summary, not an exhaustive report; the only thing missing is which pilots were circumcised) (undo)

If you mean the latter, then I support User:Twas Now in his/her actions - the article is very complete - but too exhaustive, and not totally appropriate in style for Wikipedia. Thought on the Bedford-Bletchley line: are there two? My book says that the line was originally operated by the London and North Western Railway, and nothing about a Oxford and Bletchley Railway. Could I be trying to help and actually adding wrong info? :/ —Ed 17(Talk / Contribs) 01:35, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
The Oxford and Bletchley railway built the line now known as the Bedford-Bletchley line. The entire company was absorbed by the LNWR in 1879, which then operated the line until 1922, I think. Your book might not go into specific detail about original companies.

Does he understand our view here? We have a source that we think is 100% reliable, but now a random (no offense to him) guy has come along and says that there are many errors, quoting from a 100-year old logbook. Almost all of the sources we have do not confirm nor deny that—with the exception of DANFS, which does confirm it. —Ed 17(Talk / Contribs) 17:15, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
And he claims to have sent a list of the errors to the Navy in 2005 to correct DANFS. If DANFS hasn't been fixed yet ... you tell me who has the credibility, him or the Navy. He would say himself, but per policy we have to say the Navy. -MBK004 18:46, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Ed. I still don't think the image's copyright status is clearly established. Is the image in the book you cited? It's probably a Navy image, but unless we know for sure, it would be a problem if the article ever goes to WP:FAR. Parsecboy (talk) 20:36, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

He mocks me with the extremely "vicious languages", so I gave him the warning. Instead of the essay, I tell you this: your unwarranted intervention already increases the disruption.--Caspian blue 13:43, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
He's trying to keep "the hell away from" your posts, which he believes are incivil; why don't you extend Roux the same courtesy he was extending to you? —Ed 17(Talk / Contribs) 13:46, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
He had been keeping in my ways for the past months. I'm the one who wants to keep "the hell away from him" because I believe his presence in my life very harmful. Since he has shown no courtesy and made such ad hominen attacks, your comment sounds very unconvicing.--Caspian blue 13:56, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Not really. As disruptive as a personal attack is, it's equally as disruptive to drop a generic template on an established editor. A polite, hand-written note would have been far more effective. –Juliancolton | Talk 13:47, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
He is not an "established constructive editor" in my view. Period.--Caspian blue 13:52, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
If not for his 15,000 edits, 14 barnstars, and and DYKs, I'd agree with you. –Juliancolton | Talk 13:58, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Some user had scored more "accomplishment" than any other, and got almost be elected as admin. But well, that establishment means something to the community over his "incivility incident"?--Caspian blue 14:06, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Roux != Ecoleetage, by the way. –Juliancolton | Talk 14:08, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
In my understanding of the "established "constructive editor", "civility" is indispensable.--Caspian blue 14:16, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
He is in the view of a lot of people in this community, as are you, Caspian blue. Sorry to butt in, but looks to me like nobody here assumed bad faith in the first place, but then everybody started doing it together. This really sounds to me like going and knocking at your neighbour's door and telling him to "get the hell out of my face" and then he in turn comes and does the same to you. that I finally got m'self a copy of Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships 1860-1905. So if you ever need my help with it, just let me know :) Parsecboy (talk) 20:23, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
What a brilliant finale to Round 1. With so little in it it was always going to be a tight contest, particularly in the all-important wildcard places. Congratulations to all those who have made it to Round 2, and commiserations to all who have been eliminated. I hope you continue to contribute as fully as you have been in the tournament, if not better!
As has been stated before, Round 2 begins Wednesday, April 1 2009. I hope you are all ready!

Delivered for the WikiCup by GARDEN at 21:17, 31 March 2009 (UTC). Queries to my talk.
Hello. I have raised a question about the fair use rationale on the FAC page, and have also posed the question to an editor who works with copyright questions.[3] It would be a shame to lose the image but I'm not sure it meets the fair use criteria. Regards, Kablammo (talk) 23:53, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Yes, it would be a shame, but copyright > good picture. :-) Thanks for noticing this, and I hope that it all gets sorted out! Cheers, —Ed 17(Talk / Contribs) 02:18, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
