A-class reviews

[edit]

Hey, Eddie. The expected has occurred - I've gotten bored with just nitpicking at prose like a moron. Any tips on what to look for in an A-class? I want to actually be useful, contribute more. Thanks, —La Pianista Speak · Hear 05:00, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Hahahaha I love you :) You can look for reference issues (are they formatted correctly with access dates, etc.?)...otherwise, anything more requires a decent knowledge of the topic or actually going to the sources and checking them to make sure that the article is in sync with them. —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 05:09, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
So then, more of the same? No worries - I'll try. —La Pianista Speak · Hear 05:21, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Oh wow, yeah. Well, I was brought up in a liberal household, and regularly indulge in MSNBC. Whatever the content of your edits, there definitely should have been some discussion after reverting: Bold-revert-discuss cycle anyone?
But what to expect? Conservapedia is not Wikipedia, after all. I think that there's no way to flat-out deny the slight liberal-whatever bias in Wik'edia, but ...agh, whatever. There isn't any reason to force the mushroom back up their throats, right? Oh, bother! -I'm not making any sense now, am I? Icy // 22:13, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

(<=) - lol, I wish. Nothing like that there :) I was brought up in a conservative household and I still am - a "conservative democrat" one site called me when I took a test - but realism is stronger than that. Conservapedia just flat-out denies history and ignores the real world...it gives Christians a bad name, IMHO. I don't know if there is a liberal bias to Wikipedia, but if there is, at least we have the truth here 99.9% of the time. —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 22:29, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

I am here now, though I do not retain my stars I do retain my sense of purpose. Eventually, it will be the fate of those current coordinators to leave the committee and allow the next generation to step up. I have in a sense done this with my retirement. Moreover, I have served as a advisor since my return, helping with the day to to operations. As I noted at my rfa, a position of power or influnce is a great thing, but if you are not enough without it, you will never be enough with it. The hallmark of a truely great person, then, is his or her ability to walk away from a position of influence or power and still retain the respect of those whom they once worked with. TomStar81 (Talk) 02:17, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
O_O nice speech...now if only you could spell everything right. :P
Now, all teasing aside, you definitely still have the respect of everyone who you have worked with. Definitely. No need to worry about that. —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 02:23, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
I should thank you, BTW, for the conversation above; it served as a basis for the newly saved #10 on my advise to new coordinators essay. TomStar81 (Talk) 04:06, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
Heh, uh, no problem? :-) I took a look; that #10 looks great. —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 04:16, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

The Military history WikiProject Newsletter : Issue XXXVI (February 2009)

[edit]
The Military history WikiProject Newsletter Issue XXXVI (February 2009)
From the Coordinators
This month has been interesting for MILHIST, as we reorganized a few departments. The Outreach Department has been replaced by the tabs at the top of our totally redesigned project page; thanks to Kirill for the design and Bellhalla for the logo. We also created the Academy, a hub for practical advice about creating, editing, and reviewing quality content. All project members are cordially invited to fill in some of the red links, and new ideas are always welcome.
As you can see on the right, our A-class and featured content is growing quite rapidly; these numbers have now gone up by 45 for the second straight month! Great work! In addition, thanks go out to those who recently helped in reducing the A-class nominations backlog. Reviewers are still needed; if you feel up to it, please stop by and leave comments on an article—every review helps!
Lastly, the contest results for the month: Bellhalla took the cake again with 77 points and gets the Chevrons, while Ian Rose gets the Writer's Barnstar for his 60 points. Other participants included Bryce (49 points), Cam (25), David Underdown (11), Kirk (5), Parsecboy (20), Piotrus (?), Rosiestep (3), the_ed17 (27), Wild Wolf (6), and YellowMonkey (35). 51 total articles were improved as part of this.

US WWI railway guns

They were in fact the latest model 50-cal guns.. See my addition & reference on the 14"/50 caliber gun page - it quotes from the Official US Navy report. The 45-cal myth appears to be an error that keeps going round.. Rod. Rcbutcher (talk) 23:39, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Answer

[edit]

Okay that makes since, but how are we to go about Reassessing all of the articles unless we elect a group of coordinators or create a seperate branch totally devoted to the reassessing of Start and B-Class articles to C-Class articles. But the way you described it no B-Class articles will be moved down to C's because they meet all 5 of the criteria it would just be Start Articles being moved up to C-Class articles. (Is that what you meant?) Lord R. T. Oliver The Olive Branch 01:23, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Yes. All B-class articles are B. They don't need to be moved down. :) And, with the automation, I believe that even if "start" is in the "|class=" spot, it'll still appear and be categorized as a C if it fails only 2 B-class criterion(excepting B2, which is an instant-fail). —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 01:28, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

If you can express these things to the members of the WikiProject, and the other Coordinators I think they would possibly understand that the C-Class could be a good thing, but there are still a few cons that people might not be able to get over. Lord R. T. Oliver The Olive Branch 01:33, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Battle of the Utus

[edit]

Hi ed! Thanks for the copyediting of the Battle of the Utus. As for your reasonable remarks:

  • (The) Army in Emperor's Presence. Fixed.
  • Circus factions (this is the name modern scholarship uses for calling them when "Blues and Greens is not used): Besides their function in the hippodrome and involvement in rioting, the circus factions (mainly Greens and Blues) of any large Byzantine city were invaluable for mobilizing the city's manpower (that is, the latter could not be effectively used without them), in periods of crisis. My main problem is that there is no article for them to link (it's a shame).
  • Urgent: hmm, I think one of my references used it (I'll check it again). I am not a native speaker, so I have difficulties with copyediting things.
  • Thermopylae: there is no information in the sources and the modern scholarship other than the location itself. I don't expect that there will be a wikipedia article for it.
  • Callinicus: he is an obscure saint biographer without a Wikipedia article for him (however the name Callinicus is quite common) and I don't think there will be one in the near future. How do you think we should mention him? Would "saint biographer" be proper description? --Dipa1965 (talk) 06:38, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
No problem - it was an interesting article!
  • How about you add that information into a note with a source? ;)
  • It's alright! Even those who are native speakers can have trouble writing well!
  • I didn't think there would be, but I was trying to point it out on the off chance that there was one and you had forgotten to add in a link :)
  • Well...what exactly is a "saint biographer"? Someone who writes biographies of saints? —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 15:12, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
Nice, I'l look on these! As for the "saint biographer", your guess was right but the term really sucks. Fortunately, I just found reliable sources mentioning the identity of Callinicus . He was a monk, sometimes called "Callinicus of rufinianae by the scholars.--Dipa1965 (talk) 18:05, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

 Who is this guy?

20:41, 9 March 2009 Twas Now (talk | contribs) (171,240 bytes) (this is supposed to be a summary, not an exhaustive report; the only thing missing is which pilots were circumcised) (undo)

Thanks--B29bomber (talk) 13:17, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

(TPS intrusion, as Ed hasn't responded). Are you asking who s/he is or why s/he did what s/he did? If you mean the latter, then I support User:Twas Now in his/her actions - the article is very complete - but too exhaustive, and not totally appropriate in style for Wikipedia. The article does read like a report at the moment, as the edit summary suggested. Icy // 21:18, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
A quick look at his userpage could answer that - please specify. —La Pianista Speak · Hear 23:04, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Jackal4

[edit]

You haven't been keeping close tabs on Jackal4 have you? Look at the AIV report. 3 three-revert rule violations after warning, multiple personal attacks, and vandalism. This is the reason why he is blocked.(Planecrash111 (talk) 20:00, 13 March 2009 (UTC))

That's not the point. The block should have been implemented at the time; 17 hours after he stopped editing is just punishing him, which is not what blocks are for. —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 21:49, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

The original witness just didn't report it to AIV. I had to do it on my own time. He needs to be punished anyway...look at his history.(Planecrash111 (talk) 01:40, 14 March 2009 (UTC))

The Oxford and Bletchley railway built the line now known as the Bedford-Bletchley line. The entire company was absorbed by the LNWR in 1879, which then operated the line until 1922, I think. Your book might not go into specific detail about original companies.
That stuff about the Duke of Bedford sounds good. Thanks for helping! Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 02:19, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Just a question

[edit]

I have no clue why I'm asking here and not at the help desk, but ANYWAY .... if an actor happens to voice two characters, do I write it like -

  • J. Pat O'Malley voiced Colonel Hathi the elephant/Buzzie the vulture -description of the characters-

-OR-

  • J. Pat O'Malley voiced Colonel Hathi the elephant -description of Colnel Hathi - He also voiced Buzzie the vulture -then a description of Buzzie-.

Help? Queenie 19:21, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

I thought that it was the other way around—like this:
  • Colonel Hathi (J. Pat O'Malley): descrip
  • Buzzie the vulture (J. Pat O'Malley): descripEd 17 (Talk / Contribs) 19:25, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

White Deer Hole Creek

[edit]

Thanks for your hidden comments at White Deer Hole Creek - I will review all of the "as of DATE" statements and change the ones that can be updated to "as of 2009". The Amish sawmill was rebuilt but I do not have a reliable source for it - the best I have found so far is the 2008 school bus schedule for the local school district here, which shows stops in Elimsport and 1 minute later at the sawmill. Baha. I forgot about that page. :) Sounds good! We need to find a better source than the "Idiot's Guide to Aircraft carriers" though...why did I use that again? :/ —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 15:18, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Lol, I had forgotten you had used that. I'm sure we'll be able to dig something up; Kaga isn't exactly all that obscure ;) Parsecboy (talk) 15:30, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, exactly...I'm looking now. ;) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 15:31, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
I just found a seemingly ok book to replace the Idiot's Guide - this. I already replaced the refs in the article, should be ok on that point now :) Parsecboy (talk) 15:44, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Oh, you think we ought to get a scan of the line drawing somewhere? I'd just scan in the one in Conway's, but I'm home (and thus, away from my scanner, and incidentally, away from my copy of Conway's) so I can't get mine. You don't have access to a scanner, do you? Parsecboy (talk) 15:55, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

(Out) I went ahead and tracked down the crappy version in Google books. It'll have to do until I can scan in a better one once I get home. Parsecboy (talk) 19:03, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

That's all that counts in life. :P
That one doesn't look even close to as bad as the Amagi one was, at least. I'll check for a scanner in my library tomorrow, as I have to work tonight. :/

Yeah, I had seen your comment there. For a start, the images here would of course be useful to me :) Parsecboy (talk) 19:21, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
I thought they might. :) Just hold off on uploading them for a sec; I think that a new template is needed...these aren't original works of the U.S. Navy or Federal Government. —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 19:33, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I was going to wait on that development. I started working on SMS Seydlitz today, and DANFS has a bunch of good photos of the ship. It looks like most of them are already uploaded to Commons, but for the eventual FAC, I'd like to have the more ironclad licensing information that the new template (I think) will provide. Hi Ed, long time no squeak. I've got a query for you and hope you can put me in touch with the right editors in Milhist. I've just prodded a probable hoax and then looked through the authors other edits I came upon Lajinaa, a spear from circa 1800. Contacting Naval History & Heritage Command

[edit]

I found an egregious error at the N.H.C.'s South Carolina Class page, and am wondering whether to just contact the webmaster since none of the Command branches seem to have an email address. For the record, the error is the old saw "Though the South Carolinas were actually designed before Dreadnought" - Decidedly unimpressed! If only someone would pay me for the reading I do!! Should I just email the webmaster or is there another way you might know of to bring this up with them? Cheers, --Simon Harley (talk | library | book reviews) 14:04, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Take your time, I'm still overwhelmed with school work until Saturday and won't be fully-able (luckily I was able to take some time today and get a moderate level of activity). -MBK004 04:49, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
Does he understand our view here? We have a source that we think is 100% reliable, but now a random (no offense to him) guy has come along and says that there are many errors, quoting from a 100-year old logbook. Almost all of the sources we have do not confirm nor deny that—with the exception of DANFS, which does confirm it. —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 17:15, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
And he claims to have sent a list of the errors to the Navy in 2005 to correct DANFS. If DANFS hasn't been fixed yet ... you tell me who has the credibility, him or the Navy. He would say himself, but per policy we have to say the Navy. -MBK004 18:46, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
Out of curiousity, would the Navy not have the same logbook in their possession? Maybe you could email them and ask them to confirm or deny some/all of these allegations? —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 18:50, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Connecticut photo

[edit]

Hi, Ed. I still don't think the image's copyright status is clearly established. Is the image in the book you cited? It's probably a Navy image, but unless we know for sure, it would be a problem if the article ever goes to WP:FAR. Parsecboy (talk) 20:36, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

No, it's his great-grandfather's. I'll send the email he sent me to OTRS. —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 20:39, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

I more or less finished rewriting SMS Seydlitz in a couple of days—I see you found the DYK nom ;) Parsecboy (talk) 21:17, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
Hahaha time away from classes is GREAT, isn't it? And yes, I did find the DYK nom...but I swear that I wasn't stalking you! I have both WT:DYK and T:TDYK on my watchlist, and I saw one of your edits when I checked my watchlist; I just went back later. :-) Congrats on Seydlitz; that looks like a great article! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 21:54, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Congrats!

Milhist Coordinator elections
I wish to thank you for your gracious support during my bid for a position as Coordinator of the Military history Wikiproject in the recent March 2009 elections. I was initially apprehensive to stand for election as I was unsure on how well I would be received, but I am pleasantly surprised and delighted to have been deemed worthy to represent my peers within the project. I assure and promise you, I will strive to do my upmost to justify your trust in myself with this esteemed position. Thank you, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 01:17, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Yes please - I have one more para to add there. :-) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 00:16, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Re:1047

[edit]

It looks good ed. One suggestion though: the word "however" appears quit a bit on the main text of the article, including instances where it is the first work at the start of some sentences. I would consider finding alternative words for however, or if at all possible simply removing the word for the body of the article altogether. Good luck with the article. TomStar81 (Talk) 22:20, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Alright :-) It was stupid mistakes like that that I was praying you'd find! Thanks! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 00:26, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Here's something that made me say "huh?". In the "Design studies" section, there's the line "...used in the new Italian battleships for their cruisers." It doesn't quite make sense to me. Parsecboy (talk) 00:47, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Whoops. Ed did not give enough context to the reader there. :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 00:50, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

"Preferences", scroll down to "signature", copy/paste this in: {{subst:User:X!/nothing|Parsecboy}}, click the "raw signature" checkbox. If you ever want to create your own sig, see User:The ed17/signature/classroom. :) the_ed17 :  Chat  02:19, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm pretty n00bish when it comes to these things. Thanks :) Parsecboy :  Chat  02:22, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Thank-you! I need a break from Calculus homework, so I'll give 1047 a full-review (if you took Calc, I feel for you. If you didn't, I applaud you intelligence;) Cam (Chat) 03:33, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

I'm in pre-calc with a crappy professor right now, so I sort of know. :( Thanks in advance for the review though! :) the_ed17 :  Chat  03:37, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm in IB Calculus Standard-Level, which is sort of similar. Either way, it ends up being painful, curve-sketching especially. Cam (Chat) 04:45, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Ouch. And yes, I know that it's painful; I'm carrying a C right now. -_- Thanks for the FAC review! the_ed17 :  Chat  05:08, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
I feel both of your pain. I am horrible in math, and am being forced to take Statistics next semester (university and major core curriculum). I am definitely not looking forward to that. -MBK004 05:14, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

You're kidding me. I've been thinking about expanding that article for a Did you know?, though I don't know when I will get to it. But yes, I'd love it! :-) the_ed17 :  Chat  03:57, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Good catch on the image question; I saw that caption go in ages ago and should have made the connection you did. The image is now nominated for deletion at Commons, and I have removed it from the article. I think a case could be made for retaining it as a fair use pic, and have suggested this on the article talk. Once again, thank you for noticing what I should have noticed. --John (talk) 03:59, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

No problem, and I agree that it needs to be retained as fair use (but it needs to be moved here for that to happen :P) the_ed17 :  Chat  04:05, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, Ed. Just logged in to check how things are going but I didn't have enough time to do anything properly. I don't think I'll be able to help any more on this before the DYK. I guess I'll have to find a round tuit sometime soon... Chamal talk 13:17, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Your inappropriate behavior

[edit]

You should've redacted the personal attacks made by Roux (talk · contribs) against me if you want to abide by "the rule", not intervened and quoted WP:POINTy "ESSAY". As long as Roux deletes it, you're no authority doing so.--Caspian blue 13:20, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

(edit conflict) ...why don't you can take his talk page off of your watchlist and leave him alone? And what positive effect will come about from templating him? —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 13:25, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Why don't you can't take his talk page off of your watchlist and leave me alone? What positive effect will come about from letting him produce personal attacks? Warning is warning to prevent further disruption.--Caspian blue 13:30, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Why don't you leave him alone when he is trying to separate himself from you to prevent, well, this from happening?
You're telling me that you believe that this was a personal attack? "I am simultaneously singularly uninterested in anything Caspian Blue does, and very specifically interested in keeping the hell away from his shotgun blasts of incivility and personal attacks. So, no."
Um, have you ever read WP:DTTR...? Templating him will, in all likeliness, increase the disruption. —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 13:36, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
The Essay says Essays may represent minority viewpoints. Heed them or not at your own discretion. Read WP:NPA#Why personal attacks are harmful again. He mocks me with the extremely "vicious languages", so I gave him the warning. Instead of the essay, I tell you this: your unwarranted intervention already increases the disruption.--Caspian blue 13:43, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
He's trying to keep "the hell away from" your posts, which he believes are incivil; why don't you extend Roux the same courtesy he was extending to you? —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 13:46, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
He had been keeping in my ways for the past months. I'm the one who wants to keep "the hell away from him" because I believe his presence in my life very harmful. Since he has shown no courtesy and made such ad hominen attacks, your comment sounds very unconvicing.--Caspian blue 13:56, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Not really. As disruptive as a personal attack is, it's equally as disruptive to drop a generic template on an established editor. A polite, hand-written note would have been far more effective. –Juliancolton | Talk 13:47, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
He is not an "established constructive editor" in my view. Period.--Caspian blue 13:52, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
If not for his 15,000 edits, 14 barnstars, and and DYKs, I'd agree with you. –Juliancolton | Talk 13:58, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Some user had scored more "accomplishment" than any other, and got almost be elected as admin. But well, that establishment means something to the community over his "incivility incident"?--Caspian blue 14:06, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Roux != Ecoleetage, by the way. –Juliancolton | Talk 14:08, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
In my understanding of the "established "constructive editor", "civility" is indispensable.--Caspian blue 14:16, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
He is in the view of a lot of people in this community, as are you, Caspian blue. Sorry to butt in, but looks to me like nobody here assumed bad faith in the first place, but then everybody started doing it together. This really sounds to me like going and knocking at your neighbour's door and telling him to "get the hell out of my face" and then he in turn comes and does the same to you. FAC

[edit]

Hello. I have raised a question about the fair use rationale on the FAC page, and have also posed the question to an editor who works with copyright questions.[3] It would be a shame to lose the image but I'm not sure it meets the fair use criteria. Regards, Kablammo (talk) 23:53, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Yes, it would be a shame, but copyright > good picture. :-) Thanks for noticing this, and I hope that it all gets sorted out! Cheers, —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 02:18, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
