Ipigott Thank you for your additions April 2022 WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:34, 1 May 2022 (UTC) |
- And for women's/gender studies. It was a lovely birthday present to have both Botton and Pető show up at DYK today. I am quite happy with 97 articles being created, though admittedly a few seem to not be on topic. There seemed to be confusion that these are academics, that this is an academic field, and that while they might qualify as activists, that activism would include political wrangling to introduce a new academic curricula. Not sure how/if we need to clarify that for next year. Regardless, thank you so much for your help in making it a success. SusunW (talk) 14:19, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
- I obviously should start by wishing you a very happy birthday, Susun. Thanks for your appreciation and also for all your efforts to encourage us to take gender studies more seriously this year. I certainly tried to add articles based on a fairly strict interpretation of the focus but I sympathize with those who have included more general activists. In my opinion, that does not matter too much. I discovered many more Europeans who could have been covered but it was difficult to find acceptable "secondary" sources without having easy access to relevant publications, etc. Now that interest in the field is increasing, we might find it easier to cover more of those involved in the early development of women/gender studies in the years to come. It would help if we could encourage those working on national biographies such as SKBL to devote more efforts into covering the backgrounds of the many pioneers. From Project Runeberg, there seem to be lots of relevant biographies and archival findings for Denmark and Sweden but they are not readily accessible. It's a pity the national authorities and university research centres are not examining these more closely. Though not devoted to gender studies, my most recent biography on the Swedish opera singer Paula Lizell relies almost exclusively on such sources.--Ipigott (talk) 16:20, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks Ian! So far it has been a lovely day. As we discussed previously, I think a big part of this is the era in which they were born/active falls within existing copyright statuses and many of the secondary sources in that period +/-1930s-1990s have not been digitized. Obviously, it is one of the reasons I stress newspaper archives, because often they are the available best source. Would that we could convince archivist and academics to work on these pioneers, but we do what we can. I am happy for you that you have discovered this archive for opera singers, as I do think we do our best work when the topic is one that we generally are interested in. SusunW (talk) 16:44, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW: These archives are not just for opera singers but cover a wide variety of (men and) women who have been active over the years. As always, actresses are covered in some detail but all the other women listed need to be explored. I just gave Lizell as an example of how many women have been forgotten (compared to men) in nationally supported biographies. For example, Paula Lizell is only mentioned "en passant" in Lizell, släkt. --Ipigott (talk) 18:46, 1 May 2022 (UTC)

Hi - my dad is David Wiltshire who wrote the Nightmare Man. I would like to add some more information about him and his other published work but not sure where to start. Any advice would be helpful, thanks 😊 --Doodiebey (talk) 21:14, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
- Hi there, Doodiebey, and welcome to Wikipedia. I'm sorry to have to disappoint you but Wikipedia strongly discourages additions to articles by people closely connected to the subject. In this connection, see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. If you want to contribute, I suggest you start working on another topic. You¨ll see I've included some links on your talk page which should help you to get started. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 05:34, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
Geneviève Aclocque
[edit]Greetings.!
I have included some information in Draft:Geneviève Aclocque, from the reliable sources, which is in WiR list. This is to seek your guidance to move the draft to Article space. Thank you.! With kind regards,Thirukannan (talk) 14:03, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
- Hi there, Thirukannan, and thank you for creating the draft. It looks to me as if the article could be moved to article space now unless you wish to include more details from the French version. Before I do so, I think you should include an edit summary which explains that you have translated details from the French version of the article. In this connection, see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thanks also for the other biographies of women you have been creating.--Ipigott (talk) 16:10, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much for the prompt response. The sources of information that I had included are the books and journal, given as references. I haven't translated any information from the French version. The image and few other basic details were added by other editors. Therefore,I think it can be moved to article space. Thanks & regards, Thirukannan (talk) 16:28, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thirukannan: Looks good. I've linked it to the FR article (see LH margin) and included Aclocque in List of French women writers (otherwise it would have been an orphan). I've included a translation tag on the talk page as even if you did not translate anything, other editors have added details from the French and Earwig's Copyvio Detector shows similarities with the French article. Please let me know if ever I can be of further assistance. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 06:30, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for your guidance and support.! So kind of you for extending further support.! Thanks & regards, Thirukannan (talk) 11:53, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
Question from Carbroombroom (15:08, 2 May 2022)
[edit]Are sentences like "X is the best of Y because Z" too opinionated? I rephrased one in my most recent edit because it didn't seem correct to be on Wikipedia. --Carbroombroom (talk) 15:08, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
- Hi there, Carbroombroom, and welcome to Wikipedia. Your copy-edit on Kali Linux is certainly an improvement but the statements made need to be backed by a reliable source. You'll see I have left some links on your talk page which should help you to gain experience in Wikipedia editing. Please let me know if you run into any difficulties. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 15:26, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
May songs
[edit]Thank you for using the great images about great women for articles in English! - I have the quirky DYK today, which is rare, and I don't quite know why music for peace was deemed quirky. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:54, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt: Certainly not quirky for me. It's good to see that unlike me you are also writing about deserving gentlemen.--Ipigott (talk) 13:59, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
- today performances in Ukraine - for Ukraine - for peace, at the bottom an imaginary set of eight DYK - and more May pics--Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:18, 10 May 2022 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt: There's another Swedish opera singer you might be interested in: Anna Maria Klemming, who died when only 25.--Ipigott (talk) 15:50, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for adding her! I did what I could, but again, as all sources are in Swedish, I won't nominate for DYK. You could do that. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:05, 12 May 2022 (UTC)

Thank you for adding Ladislaja Harnoncourt to WiR DYK. What do you think of the tag? Sure, I created "her" in a bit of defiance, because I found it unfair that only male family members have an article, four males who wouldn't have become what the are/were without her educating them, and nothing yet of the daughters. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:25, 13 May 2022 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt: I think the tag is ridiculous but I don't want to cause any upsets by removing it at this stage. I was hoping some other experienced editor would delete it given the substantial number of sources included.--Ipigott (talk) 09:33, 13 May 2022 (UTC)
- It seems that many think the same. There's also a "discussion" on the talk. By now, some hundred people must have seen the article, with tag and without. Formally, it's correct, of course but we have IAR for the unusual cases. We must have thousands of articles about less influential women. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:58, 13 May 2022 (UTC)
today Melody (not by me), and more pics, and I created an article about a woman who played Melody. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:00, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
my choir in Idstein performed an evensong (pictured), two years and two months after the last! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:47, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
- Always good to have your news, Gerda Arendt. Thanks for your help with Magna Lykseth-Skogman. Adam Cuerden should be happy to see another of his improved images on the main page. My most recent Scandinavian opera singers are Davida Hesse-Lilienberg, Hedevig Quiding and Louise Sahlgreen but I don't think any of them are prominent enough for DYKs.--Ipigott (talk) 06:21, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
- thank you, especially for today's a strong woman - will look at the others later--Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:03, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
- I like my talk today (actually mostly from 29 May - I took the title pic), enjoy the music, two related videos worth watching! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:47, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt: Good picture of the orchestra. As she's German, you might be interested in Hedwig Reicher-Kindermann.--Ipigott (talk) 14:33, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
archiving
[edit]You kind of archived the discussions we were having. Anything else to say? Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 19:49, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
- Adam Cuerden: Over the years I've been criticized for not archiving my talk pages but I agree with you that it's difficult to know when to make a break. I'll try to restore recent discussions below.--Ipigott (talk) 20:24, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry to complain, just a few of the bits you archived we were mid discussion. It's my fault for putting them under the header for Magna Lyskell-Skogren. I'm sure I've messed that up.
- Achhh. Just got done venting at the Wikicup for losing sight of the entire purpose of the bloody competition. Do feel kind of sad about it, though: MILHIST and OPERA are fairly quiet, at least when I comment, so that basically leaves WP:FPC and WP:WIRED as basically the only places on this bloody site that I feel any sense of community anymore. Should try to get an invite to the virtual Wikimania or something, before I burn out on Wikipedia again. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 20:30, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
- Adam Cuerden: I sympathize with your frustration but don't give up.--Ipigott (talk) 20:37, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
Lilly Walleni
[edit]I think there's two stand-out images for her - the Daria and the Navarraisse in the article at present. Which do you like better? I think the Navarraise is the stronger expression - can't dislike a good mad scene - but the kneeling gives an odd look to her lower body in the dress. The Daria is a better generic image, but no-one performs (or even writes articles on) Daria - it's by Georges Marty - anymore. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 20:34, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
- Adam Cuerden: The Daria image is really impressive. I don't think it matters too much that the opera is no longer performed. The quality of the image is already good. Do you think you will be able to enhance it further?--Ipigott (talk) 05:47, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

- Adam Cuerden: Thanks. Looks good. I think such a list would be of interest to all the contributors to Women in Red. If you draw one up, I suggest you post it there but if you find any other opera singers, please let me know.--Ipigott (talk) 05:43, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
- [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Black_and_white_photographs_of_performers_at_Kungliga_operan has most of them. Some amazing costumes in there, though the men have more fun ones on the whole. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 11:40, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
I'm using number of photos as a proxy, but Magna Lykseth seems to have a notably high number of operas under her belt. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 11:46, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
- Adam Cuerden: Lykseth looks good. I've found a good biographical source here. Which image(s) would you like to work on?--Ipigott (talk) 15:14, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
- Okay. I've reviewed. If we presume File:Magna Lykseth, opera singer, undated portrait - SMV - GL173.tif is her natural hair, and that some very unnatural hair in some of them are wigs, then we can eliminate a few possibilities, and I don't like the fade at the bottom in that one.. File:Magna Lykseth in Tosca at Kungliga Operan 1912 - SMV - GL170.tif is an amazing pose, but the amount of damage on the face concerns me, so let's leave that for a secondary image. File:Magna Lykseth in Valkyrian at Kungliga Operan 1902 - SMV - GL157.tif has a lot of glow from the shield, but great costume. But there's one standout: not too damaged, closeup, good pose:
-
In Tristan und Isolde

- Adam Cuerden: Let's go for Tristan. She was noted for her Wagnerian roles and it would be more suitable for illustrating her biography. She is also remembered for Tosca if you feel like working on that one too. I'll see if I can put something together tomorrow.--Ipigott (talk) 15:32, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
- I added some more details in edits, but, yeah, I think the Tristan is the standout, and also the least damaged of the good-quality images, which is nice. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 15:35, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

If it helps, no:Magna Lykseth-Skogman seems the better of the two, and I speak a little Norwegian. Not much, but.... Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 20:40, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, that's how it looked to me too but the German biography I mentioned above is even better. When I "translate" articles from other Wikipedia versions, I hardly ever present a word-for-word translation. I look at the sources used in the existing articles and try to find new ones. I then write a new biography in the usual way, although many of the basic facts many closely resemble those in other versions. There are quite a few Danish/Norwegian words in Scottish. I come from Newcastle where the local dialect, including the pronounciation, draws heavily on the influence of Scandinavian sailors but my own fluency is mainly thanks to my wife who is Danish.--Ipigott (talk) 05:47, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- I think I just pick it up by way of having chosen as a teenager the most useless second language to become fluent in: Middle English by way of Sir Gawaine and the Green Knight. But if you're in Newcastle, let me know if you're ever up in Edinburgh. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 07:16, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, but I have no plans to return to Newcastle. I no longer have any relatives or friends there. From time to time we travel to London for the theatres, exhibitons, etc., but otherwise we keep to continental Europe.--Ipigott (talk) 08:40, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

Adam Cuerden: I've made a start on this. As I don't think I'll have much more time to work on it today, you might like to add your image(s). I noted by the way that your Tristan image now appears twice in the Norwegian article.--Ipigott (talk) 11:59, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
Looks like I'll have to renominate her later. I have like 5 images on 4 supports, and it's not looking likely that's going to get fixed in time for her. This happens sometimes. Featured picture candidates sometimes just breaks. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 19:42, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
Also, I've extracted the Agnes Janson image, just want to wait to make sure we get consensus. Have a vague idea you asked me about something else, but I can't find it. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 20:29, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
- Adam Cuerden: Glad to hear you are making progress with Agnes Janson. From the discussion on the WiR talk page, there seems to be agreement on the photographer. The other images I have mentioned: Liva Järnefelt which I've cropped as it's nominated for DYK, and Paula Lizell which still needs attention. Perhaps I should just crop that one too?--Ipigott (talk) 07:56, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
- Give me a moment. Uploading Janson. Think I'm going to upload it locally, and then on Commons, because it's completely indisputably out of copyright in the US, and I could see Commons questioning the attribution at some point, although it seems pretty certain. Might hold off on nominating thigns for FPC for a little bit until things start passing, though. Looking like I'm going to have a whole raft of nominations fail, starting with Lykseth-Skogman. Cropsey is in no better shape, Il trovatore in worse shape, Carney at least has time to get the fifth, and Brannan isn't even getting voted on. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 11:35, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
Let's talk Lizell images. Here's ones I feel are a little more interesting:
-
Also nice as it can be used in Les diamants de la couronne.
-
From Per Svinaherde, which I believe is by Theodor Lundberg. Not a popular opera or composer, given we don't even have an article on the composer, and even Swedish Wiki doesn't have one on the opera.
-
Tiefland could also use another photo. She does look very old here, though, even compared to File:Paula Lizell in Låglandet at Kungliga Operan 1908 - SMV - GL122.tif - which is her in the same photoshoot.
The one in the article is fine, but these kind of show off her acting. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 12:05, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
- Adam Cuerden: It seems to me that the first one would be good for the opera but less suitable for the biography. We could of course always include additional images in the biographies. But please go ahead with your own preferences which up to now have been pretty successful. I really don't want to cause any problems and am glad to see old Swedish opera singers are attracting new interest.--Ipigott (talk) 13:46, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
- Might try to do both. Just need to make sure the one nominated is first. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 15:21, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
- I'll not get into Walleni much because it relies too much on just some awards, images, and a bio in Swedish, - no DYK. Thanks for the efforts: great image work! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:50, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt: At least we now have a great image of Walleni which some day might appear on the main page. With all her German connections, it's strange she's not in the GSL bible.--Ipigott (talk) 13:00, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt: Actually, it's featured here, so it will appear on the main page barring the site dying or POTD changing how it works. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 23:56, 7 May 2022 (UTC)
- Okay. Little work to try and get rid of a couple things from 2013 that were bothering me by being unfinished for so long, and back to the grindstone. I think I'll do two for her, because, let's face it, having a link to the opera singer from an opera page helps draw people in, so I think having that image of her performing adds value. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 15:56, 12 May 2022 (UTC)

Let's look at images for her while we're at it. I'd say File:Liva Järnefelt in Carmen at Kungliga Operan 1914 - SMV - GJ052.tif is probably the easiest to restore. I also think we could probably do decent things with File:Liva Järnefelt, opera singer - SMV - NJ025.tif. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 12:15, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
- Adam Cuerden: I like the Carmen image too but the second one would be more suitable for the biography.--Ipigott (talk) 13:48, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
- I'll have to fix the chin. Look at it full-resolution, lower left hand side. I don't mind this when it's a fairly small thing to bring out some detail - hell, I carefully fixed some of it on Walleni - but it's pretty badly done here. And it's a bad example of scaleface, which is either an aftereffect of editing, or just what happens to photos in the lighter areas. From WiR list, I have created an article Mary McGeachy without image. This is to seek your guidance on how to use an image which is found in a book. Thank you for your valuable time.! Thanks & regards, Thirukannan (talk) 11:48, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thirukannan You need to provide more information before anyone can answer the question. Is the author of the photograph identified? If yes, when did that person die. When and where was the book published? Copyright depends the laws of the country of first publication, so without knowing who made it and where the question is unanswerable. Because copyright extends from the date of publication or the date of death of the maker, when must also be known. SusunW (talk) 15:32, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
- Greetings.!
- Thank you so much for the response and guidance. Apologize for the incomplete information. I will try to learn more about it. The book is Women of the World: The Rise of the Female Diplomat , written by Helen McCarthy. This was published by A&C Black, London in 2014. This book is given as one of the references in the article. Thanks & regards, Thirukannan (talk) 16:17, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thirukannan A photograph published in 2014 is typically not one that is free from copyright control. In the US and UK, 70 years after it was first published or 70 years after the death of the author is the general rule of thumb. From you description, I am assuming that you are speaking of the photograph that says "at her desk in the Washington Embassy in 1942"? I cannot read the photocredit on the side of the picture. If the photograph was published in the US in 1942 and the author is unknown and it did not have a copyright mark, or the author was the US government, it might be copyright free. If it was first published in the UK, it would not be copyright free until 2037. (See US rules here. Give me some time and I will try to research it's background. SusunW (talk) 18:33, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

I took your comment "...the article needs to be expanded" to heart. I concur that the article should be kept and have expanded it as I could. But, I am not qualified to discuss her work other than in the briefest general manner. This and this describe what she wrote about and I know computing was your thing. Any chance you could give a brief overview of her work? If you are too busy, I certainly understand, but maybe another page visitor will have the skill to write about technology. SusunW (talk) 15:37, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW: Thanks for expanding it into such an interesting article. I'll have to be more careful about comments relating to expansion. I'm rather busy today but I'll look through it tomorrow.--Ipigott (talk) 15:45, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
- As you can. I am confident it will now be kept. SusunW (talk) 15:56, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW. I really appreciate the effort you have put into this. I've now looked through it quite carefully and see no need for further editing at this stage. You've certainly brought out her major contributions in sufficient detail. Maybe sooner or later someone (not you) can research what she has been doing for the past 20 years. I seem to have been caught up in quite a number of unexpected discussions and assignments this month and feel I should now try to get back to covering more Scandinavians, possibly in connection with our translation contest which unfortunately seems to be attracting less interest this month.--Ipigott (talk) 07:45, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
- Ipigott Thank you. Yes, someone not me. I do appreciate you taking the time to look at it, as I wasn't sure I had written it well enough. Not my area of expertise and I am fairly sure we all know I wouldn't have written on a technology person. But, I felt that the sources found in the AfD were adequate to make the point that her notability was established and it really needed to be expanded. Have fun with your Scandinavians. SusunW (talk) 13:09, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW: Scandinavians are always fun. One of these days, I might look into just how many articles I've written about Scandinavia and Finland (officially regarded as a "Nordic" rather than a Scandinavian country), not just women's biographies but everything else. I'm rather upset about Finland joining NATO. I have always admired their neutrality and their support of culture from both East and West. Ditto Sweden and Switzerland. Let's hope their concern for defence will not go any upset things any further.--Ipigott (talk) 15:45, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
- I think it's similar to one of the reasons I enjoy the Caribbean. They are small and often relationships overlap so writing about one person or event brings in new people and levels of interconnectedness. Unfortunately, I was not surprised by the decision, because neutrality is often compromised when safety becomes a concern. With the recent developments on Roe, I question my own stance that it is a private matter and am moving closer to the position that rights must be codified to be guaranteed. SusunW (talk) 16:17, 12 May 2022 (UTC)

- I see we can thank Axel Pettersson (WMSE) for this. He may be interested to see we've been working together on several other Swedish opera singers, including Magna Lykseth-Skogman, Paula Lizell, Liva Järnefelt, Anna Oscàr and Anna Bartels. I've recently been writing about Anna Maria Klemming and Maria Gelhaar where there are also opportunities for image improvement. - Thanks for all the great work you do with images! I'm adding @Alicia Fagerving (WMSE) here also as the writer of that part of the newsletter and mastermind behind the uploads. - Hi again @Adam Cuerden and @Ipigott. Yesterday I talked to David as we plan to do another upload of images this fall. Without any promises they'd be happy to look into requests and wishes from your side when it comes to what collections and material should be prioritized in their database. Let me know here, or add it to their Commons talk page if you have any dream material. We also talked about their policy on adding visibility to the improved material by linking from their database, but they need to let it sink in and think about it first. /Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 09:37, 20 May 2022 (UTC)
- Axel Pettersson (WMSE): Thanks for getting back to us on this. For my own part, I am most interested in creating articles about Swedish women of historical interest who are adequately covered in reliable sources, whether these are in Swedish or in other languages. That explains why I was able to write about a number of opera singers associated with the Royal Theatre in Stockholm. Unfortunately, while some of the photographs of dancers were also impressive, it was difficult to find sufficient biographical information about them to create articles of at least Start Class quality. May I suggest more time could be devoted to adding meaningful subcategories to Commons category Media_from_the_Swedish_Performing_Arts_Agency as it is difficult to obtain a meaningful overview of what has been added to date. Perhaps your colleagues at WMF Sweden could help with this. If there are portraits of notable composers, musicians, painters or writers, it would be interesting to be able to find them more easily on the basis of category searches. Maybe searches based on multiple categories are already possible but I don't know how to handle these on Commons. Maybe Eric Luth (WMSE) would be able to provide some assistance in this connection by preparing Wikidata listings based on the images provided by the Swedish Performing Arts Agency. Also of interest, would be images in connection with women covered in the Svenskt kvinnobiografiskt lexikon. We already have this Women in Red Wikidata list but there is no indication of which articles are supported by SMV images. There may of course well be more suggestions from other contributors.--Ipigott (talk) 12:05, 20 May 2022 (UTC)

Greetings.! I got a problem in WiR list, which seems more complicated than the one I had earlier. I created an article Yu Shan (Q10887863) for Yu Shan, an actress from China from WiR list but later found one article Yu Shan (actress) on the same subject, which had translation from Chinese language. This is to seek your guidance on the options available. Shall I transfer the information that I have collected to the Yu Shan (actress), then the new one that I had created can be deleted.? or is there any other option? Thank you for your valuable time.! Thanks & regards, Thirukannan (talk) 21:59, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
- I'm afraid, Thirukannan, that your only option is to add the interesting new details and references you have found to the existing article which was created in March. Our redlists are only for guidance. You should always carefully search Wikipedia for an existing article before you start a new one. It is not appropriate to use the Wikidata Q number in the Wikipedia article name. Also, please note that she was apparently born in China (not Japan) and that her family name is Yu (not Shan). Please let me know if you run into any difficulties in editing the existing article and I'll try to help you along. Once the details have been added, your new article should be deleted. For the time being, I've moved it to Draft:Yu Shan (Q10887863). I'm glad to see you are making good progress with editing and have already created Heloísa Alberto Torres and Hannah Packard James. Keep up the good work.--Ipigott (talk) 06:14, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for your encouraging words. In fact I simply assumed that the 'red' means there is no article on that subject. I realize the mistake. I will carefully check if there is any article on that subject in similar name or related one. I accept the comments. I am really surprised how that Wikidata Q came along with the title.! Thanks & regards, Thirukannan (talk) 10:25, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thirukannan: The Wikidata Q number sometimes appears in redlists to identify an article when abother article has been created with the same name. in this case the mountain Yu Shan. Otherwise it would not be included on the redlist.--Ipigott (talk) 15:03, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you so much. It is another learning experience for me. Now I have updated Yu Shan (actress) with the information I had collected from the reliable sources, without disturbing the main content. Kindly consider to delete the Draft:Yu Shan (Q10887863).! Rene Rechtman
[edit]Hi Ian, my name is Eloise. Very nice to meet you. I noticed that you are a member of WP:DENMARK and thought you might be willing to look at my draft for René Rechtman, a Danish entrepreneur and the founder and CEO of Moonbug Entertainment. If you think the article is ready to be included on Wikipedia, please feel free to move it to mainspace. If not, I welcome your feedback. Thanks for your help! - Hi there, Eloise Moonbug. Thanks for getting in touch. I see from your user page that you are being paid for this article. In accordance with Paid editors, you should clearly state your paid involvement on the article's talk page. Once you do so, I will then look more closely at the draft but I am not happy about following up on numerous future requests for updates such as those in connection with Talk:Moonbug Entertainment. Please also check whether the spelling should be René or Renè.--Ipigott (talk) 15:59, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
- Ipigott, thanks for getting back to me! I've disclosed on the draft's Talk page now as well. I appreciate you taking the time to look at my draft, and I won't come to you with any future requests, should they come up. As for the spelling- thank you for pointing that out! The correct spelling is René. Looking forward to your feedback, Eloise Moonbug (talk) 13:23, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
- Eloise Moonbug: I'm really surprised that after my comments above, you did not take the trouble to correct at least two cases of misspelling the subject's name in your draft. I would have thought it was one of the most important items for a paid editor to get right. It's too easy to rely on volunteers to correct substandard work.--Ipigott (talk) 15:33, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
- Ian, you're absolutely right, my apologies! I was focused on the disclosure on the Talk page, and completely forgot about the spelling issue. I've fixed both now. Thanks again. Eloise Moonbug (talk) 10:42, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, Eloise Moonbug. Not many of my Wikipedia collaborators are happy about how often I assist paid editors. I nevertheless try to help all those whose contributions could improve the encyclopedia. In your particular case, I saw that you tried to encourage several other editors to move your article to article space without success. I offered assistance but you not only failed to respond to my spelling recommendations but did not respond to me for five days. I'll nevertheless take a new look at the article tomorrow. I don't know how much you are being paid for such simply assignments but I would suggest you become more responsive to any future suggestions.--Ipigott (talk) 17:10, 23 May 2022 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Yu Shan (Q10887863)
[edit]A tag has been placed on Yu Shan (Q10887863) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect from the article namespace to a different namespace except the Category, Template, Wikipedia, Help, or Portal namespaces.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Fram (talk) 15:36, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
Question from Nadja1968 on User:Nadja1968/Diane Esmond (19:41, 16 May 2022)
[edit]Dear Ipigott, I hope you are well! I am pretty much done with this entry; please check it. The images are being reviewed at Wikimedia commons, but should be approved shortly. If you have comments or suggestions, please let me know! Thank you, Nadja1968 ˜˜˜˜ --Nadja1968 (talk) 19:41, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
- Nadja1968: Good to see such progress. I'll look at the article more carefully tomorrow.--Ipigott (talk) 21:20, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
- Nadja1968: As I said above, you are making good progress with this biography. The details of her life and work are well presented and you list many pertinent sources.
There nevertheless seem to be a few problems. I see you uploaded the three images yourself but without giving licenses. They are therefore likely to be deleted within a week. I don't know what you mean by "the images are being reviewed at commons" but I await further details.
There do not appear to be any serious copyright violations although similarities with Diane Esmond on 1st Dibs were detected. If you used this as a source, you should include a reference. I see you cite many newspaper articles in your bibliography. It would be interesting to know where you found these. Do you have copies or are they cited in other sources? If so, it would be good to include them as references.
I suppose you have access to the books you have used as sources. They seem to be correctly presented.
You still need to include a "lead" to the article, i.e. a summary of the main aspects of her life and work as an introduction.
I would like to review progress, especially on the images, over the next week. If all goes well, it should then be possible to move the article to main space.--Ipigott (talk) 06:38, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
Question from Nadja1968 on User:Nadja1968/Diane Esmond (16:52, 17 May 2022)
[edit]Hi Ipigott, Thank you so much for your feedback and help! I've added an introductory paragraph and also several references (I found these with the help of the Fine Arts Librarian at Harvard, so I do have copies). I did not use the website "First Dibs" as a source, and I have removed it to avoid confusion. The three images should appear soon in the Wikimedia Commons, although it might take a few days. I'll check back with you when I have a definite answer. Best, ˜˜˜˜ --Nadja1968 (talk) 16:52, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
- Nadja1968: It's good to hear you are being assisted by a Harvard librarian. Thanks for the improvements but I'm still worried about the images, especially the paintings. Let's see how it goes.--Ipigott (talk) 20:56, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
Question from Nadja1968 on User:Nadja1968/Diane Esmond (12:30, 19 May 2022)
[edit]Hi Ipigott, I have heard from Wikimedia commons that the three images have been added to the file page. Please look over the Diane Esmond draft, and, if there are no more concerns, please add this entry to Wikipedia. Thank you so much for your help! ˜˜˜˜ --Nadja1968 (talk) 12:30, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
- Nadja1968: Thank you for all the effort you have put into this. I was happy to see the image copyright issues have been resolved. The two paintings do much to enhance the article and might now be included in other articles on Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. I've moved the biography to article space where it has already been approved for general access. I've linked Esmond from List of French women artists and from the article on Édouard Georges Mac-Avoy. You might find it useful to include links from other pages. If you run into any difficulties, please let me know. If you intend to write more articles about women, you might be interested in becoming a member of WP:Women in Red where we are trying to give more prominence to women on Wikipedia. Please drop me a line if you ever need further assistance. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 14:22, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

[edit]Jutland Movement hasn't been touched since 2017, and is very bare-bones. Because of your interest in Denmark -- and you created Marie Bregendahl! -- you may find it interesting. From what I'm seeing, it seems like a notable literary movement, but I can't translate with enough accuracy to edit for sure. Urve (talk) 22:07, 20 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for bringing this to my attention. It's not a very significant movement but I can take a quick look. My interest is in writing biographies of Danish women rather than covering related historical developments. It looks to me as if the article may well have been created to cover a red link back in 2013. You can find more background in Modern Breakthrough which I have added under "See also".--Ipigott (talk) 05:50, 21 May 2022 (UTC)
- Interesting, thanks! I'll do some reading. No pressure - I just thought of you when I came across it, and Bregendahl being linked there is a nice personal touch. There are many of these tiny literary movements, often not very significant, that might help us better understand the social atmosphere of writers we are interested in. I've requested a few papers through ILL for Créolie and other historical movements, hopefully to write about more women :) Urve (talk) 11:54, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Magna Lykseth-Skogman
[edit]On 25 May 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Magna Lykseth-Skogman, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Magna Lykseth appeared as Isolde (pictured) when Wagner's Tristan und Isolde was first performed at the Royal Swedish Opera in 1909? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Magna Lykseth-Skogman. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Magna Lykseth-Skogman), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

[edit]Thanks for calling me wonderful. I agree, Mariah Harned has made impressive progress so far. I was wondering, though, if you were aware of any resources that teach people basic wikimarkup? I intend to be as interactive as possible with the mentees that the mentor dashboard assigns to me, but it might be useful to have a page that teaches the basics of Wikipedia editing if there isn't already one. Most of the newcomer resources I'm aware of teach people about things like the five pillars. While that's important, not being familiar with how to edit here is a potential obstacle to people contributing.
By the way, you helped inspire me to start working on something that's related to that WIR again at Draft:Toponym'elles. I think it could still use a lot of work, but I think it's a notable topic. It isn't a biography, but it's about toponymic representation of women in Montreal. I thought you might find that interesting since your userpage says you used to live there. If you see any issues or want to help me out with it, feel free to edit it. There's a redlink in the draft for Monique Fitz-Back so there's a possible article there, too. Clovermoss (talk) 01:19, 26 May 2022 (UTC)
- Clovermoss: While I prefer encouraging new users to use the links on the standard welcome page and often recommend The Wikipedia Adventure, there are a number of videos which cover basic to editing, for example How to edit Wikipedia or Introduction to Wikipedia editing. In connection with Draft:Toponym'elles, it looks to me as if the article could be moved to article space. It would be useful to draw up a red list of women's street names not already included in the English Wikipedia. Many other cities have launched similar initiatives, for example Copenhagen. As I left Montreal in 1972, I think any further work on the article or related biographies could be handled better by those who are more familiar with recent developments. Please keep in touch and let me know if I can be of any further assistance.--Ipigott (talk) 06:38, 26 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for your response. I think that the draft could be moved to mainspace but I usually like to draft things a little bit more before I do so. I'm autopatrolled so people see things immediately. I'd need to add categories, preferably expand it a bit more, etc. I was just offering in case you were interested in improving it or if there was some glaring issue that I somehow didn't notice. I sometimes worry that I'm missing something crucial and no one's told me, so I'm always open to feedback like that. 1972 is a long time. Wow. I'm 19 so I don't really have any base of comparison.
- The drafted article will likely be in much better shape in a few days, which is likely when I will move it to mainspace. Thanks for letting me know about another city that has a similar initative as I find all of this to be fascinating. Thank you for the video links. I think that visual aids are something that's more useful in a scenerio like this compared to text. I was still planning to welcome people the typical way, maybe leave a personal note, answer any questions, etc. I was mainly looking for resources like this in case someone is confused and wants to learn editing basics because it's easier to show and not tell when it comes to wikimarkup. Elsa Jernås
[edit]Hello @Ipigott,
I just submitted my first AfC draft on a Woman Artist that I found on the WIR index, Elsa Jernås, I was wondering if you could take a look and let me know what you think? It proved difficult for me to find additional citations beyond what was linked on her Swedish page -- I found only one but it's most of a passing mention in an article about her husband. But I was able to put something together with the help of Google translate. SleepyWhippet (talk) 07:59, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
This morning I qualified for access to Wikipedia Library and was able to also find and add this citation: https://www-degruyter-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/database/AKL/entry/_40611507/html SleepyWhippet (talk) 15:44, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- SleepyWhippet: Just noticed your messages now. Rather busy today but I'll certainly look at it tomorrow.--Ipigott (talk) 15:50, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, no rush whatsoever. Have a great day. SleepyWhippet (talk) 15:55, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- SleepyWhippet: This might be of interest. More tomorrow.--Ipigott (talk) 16:16, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- SleepyWhippet: Well done! It had already been moved to article space when I looked at it this morning. You'll see I've made a couple of additions.--Ipigott (talk) 10:23, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Ipigott Thank you, thank you, you've made it so much better! I'm encouraged that I finally seem to have figured out how to do this right, at least on a "stub" level. :) -- I plan on taking a stab at Bolette Berg next, which incidentally happens to align with this month's WIR theme of LGBTQ+ women -- I'm excited! SleepyWhippet (talk) 15:08, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- SleepyWhippet: Sounds good. You'll find some useful links here. You seem to be interested in Scandivaians although you say you are of Iranian descent. Are you able to understand the languages or do you have family associations? In any case, if ever you need any help, for example with passages from books or newspapers which do not run through Google Translate, just let me know.--Ipigott (talk) 15:40, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Ipigott Thank you for the links, and for offering to help. I have worked with a lot of Scandivaians and have travelled all over the region over the years, so I actually have picked up some rudimentary language -- my written Farsi is not so strong either, as I grew up in Canada, so I have to rely on help for all these languages, which is part of the fun I suppose! Anyway, I think the real explanation behind my selection "methodology" is that I'm just a visual person, so the entries that have a picture on the index jump out at me, hehe ;) SleepyWhippet (talk) 03:07, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

I am happy to be working on women
[edit]I haven't abandoned the nationality articles, but I have to take a break from it. In that regard, I've worked up two articles, Grace Voss Frederick and Pat Gozemba that I am trying to nominate for GA for their environmental initiative. I have asked GRuban to confirm that photos I found can be used (I've researched and I think so, but am unsure because it's that pre-1977 era). At any rate, if you have time and inclination, could you give them a copyedit? If you don't have interest, or are too busy, no worries. Thank you for all you do for WiR and me. I appreciate you. SusunW (talk) 13:49, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW: I'll gladly take a closer look at both of them in next day or two as time permits.--Ipigott (talk) 13:59, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you! SusunW (talk) 14:00, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW: I'm really pleased to see you are once again working towards GA. These two articles are developing very well. I suppose you will now be working on illustrations. Please let me know if you need further assistance, bearing in mind that I am no expert on American biographies.--Ipigott (talk) 11:44, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you so much Ian. I discovered Gozemba during women's studies month and knew I would write her for Pride month. I discovered Voss when someone asked if they could use a photo she took. The article was in bad shape, so I just redid it from scratch. They both fit with the climate initiative for WiR and WiG, so that was a plus too. I am always in my happy place when working on women's history. SusunW (talk) 13:22, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- Seeing you two interact and work together is a highlight of my day. --ARoseWolf 13:56, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- ARoseWolf: One of these days, we may be able to help you with one of your new articles too. That would make a threesome.--Ipigott (talk) 14:05, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- Having encouragement from both of you, ARoseWolf, is the highlight of mine. And yes, that would be fun for all three of us to work together. SusunW (talk) 14:08, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- I will always be here to encourage you both to achieve great things on Wikipedia and in life. For so long I allowed myself to be inhibited by experiences in my past. They still affect me to some degree which is understandable. Trauma never really goes away. However, I've learned to filter out those things which can become toxic to the creative colors inside me. It takes something of a reset where I reflect inward which can take hours or days to accomplish but I come out stronger and better for it. I have not fully rediscovered the creative powers inside me since my fight against leukemia concluded. That fight took so much from me and I am just happy I survived and am still here with my family. However, creative thoughts never cease. They dance around me to the tune of my Song, bursting with colors in my eyes, even as I sleep. And I am left in awe, not only at the creativity in me but in those whom I am so fortunate to listen to as I walk my path through life. --ARoseWolf 14:38, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- ARoseWolf: That all sounds very positive and encouraging. Just let us know when you feel creative enough to contribute new articles. I'm pretty sure it will help you along with your recovery.--Ipigott (talk) 16:42, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- I apologize for not responding sooner. Life happened and got in the way (chores wait for no one). You both will be the very first ones I come to when I decide to create content again. In the meantime, if there is anything I can do to assist either of you please do not hesitate to ask me. Ian, I also have not forgotten your offer to help me write and publish memoirs from my journals. I will be taking you up on that offer soon. I've spent the better part of this Winter/Spring/Summer cycle, so far, catching up on things that were let go because I was the one that handled it. They did a great job of making it through without me but it's never quite the same when you are used to a specific process. I think I will be strong enough by this winter to return to sledding. It will help my family to have another sled team out on the trails. I am rambling now. Thank you both for being so kind and understanding. --ARoseWolf 17:11, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- ARoseWolf I am glad that you are beginning to find your creative voice again. It is hard to explain how much cancer impacts you. On the one hand being creative gives you an alternate focus from real danger, but on the other, the real danger sucks up a lot of the energy you have to be creative or to even plan creative activities to distract yourself. Slowly but surely, I too am coming out the other side stronger for the journey. As Ian said, when you are ready, we are here. SusunW (talk) 17:46, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW, you understand me so well. I spent months in the hospital during the height of a global pandemic. I had my nurses take pictures of themselves and put them on the wall around me so I could see their faces in a world of masks. I poured so much of myself into staying alive and creative activities like notes I passed around with other patients that I couldn't see but I could feel and hear kept me grounded and focused on not only surviving but giving back to the humanity I was born into. My world stopped the day I was diagnosed and it took every ounce of who I am, the love and support of others like you, Ian, Gerda and so many, to get it turning again. Yet I never lost sight of who I am. A Rainbow in the sky of so many Songs. We'll get there, Susun. I'll make it and it is so comforting to know you and Ian will be there. --ARoseWolf 18:22, 1 June 2022 (UTC)

WHGI and Humaniki from January 2017 to February 2020
[edit]After seeing the Wikimedia Research Showcase - May 2022 on Ms. Categorized with Francesca Tripodi, I took take another look at some of the data I have been gathering on AfDs. I'm interested in replicating the results of her study. Dr. Tripodi mentions in her [paper https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/epub/10.1177/14614448211023772], in footnote 8, that "Data for this analysis was provided by the Women in Red main page Revision History. Available at: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Red&offset=&limit=500&action=history". The only data that I am aware of are your weekly posts where you would write something like: "the figure which has reached 17.41% as of 5 February 2018. But that means, according to WHGI, only 264,671 of our 1,519,906 biographies are about women". WHGI is offline, and I see to be unable to get historical data out of [humaniki https://humaniki.wmcloud.org/search] Is there another source for the data (from January 2017 to February 2020 especially) that I am unaware of? (I suppose I could ask Maximilianklein about the available_snapshots in the humaniki API)
Thanks, 20:18, 1 June 2022 (UTC) Vexations (talk) 20:18, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- Vexations: It looks as if Tripodi simply looked at the editing history of the WiR main page. As you say, WHGI is no longer accessible but I seem to remember it contained all the necessary data. Denelezh has data going back to February 2017.--Ipigott (talk) 06:08, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, Ipigott I scraped the pages to get a similar same dataset. I'll try to get in touch with her to see if she's willing to share her data. Thanks for your (and other's) weekly posts, they're an important record. Vexations (talk) 11:26, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

- Oh, sorry, I wasn't clear: I was going to ask Dr. Tripodi, but I'll check in with Envlh as well. Vexations (talk) 12:23, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Vexations. You are right that WHGI is no longer available, it had to be taken down per Wikimedia Security Reasons. As the server was old. Luckily all the data is retained. I have a very backlogged intention to backfill the data into humaniki. In the meantime I made a little hack in case it's useful to you. You can download the historical CSV data at https://humaniki.wmcloud.org/snapshot_data/ . The "property_indexes" are CSVs whose rows are a dimension and columns are aggregate counts of Genders. I hope that helps. Maximilianklein (talk) 19:59, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

Was setting up POTD for November (I'm POTD co-ordinator now. Woo?) Content assessment and Good Articles
[edit]Hello Ipigott, hope you're doing well. We'd got in touch on my talk page during the Women's History Month. I had some questions about Wiki, so thought of writing to you here. Recently, I've expanded a few articles and wanted to update their class according to Wikipedia:Content assessment. Can I do it myself or should I wait/request someone to go through the articles and then they'll update accordingly? Let me know how it works.
Another question I had is about Good Articles. I've gone through the criteria for GA and thinking of nominating some of my articles for the same. However, I've used some references in regional languages while expanding those articles. Would that be an issue during review as the reviewer would mainly look for English based references, since we're on English Wiki? Or I can request someone who's versed with the specific language? Do share your experience about this. Thanks and regards. DesiBoy101 (talk) 11:51, 4 June 2022 (UTC)
- DesiBoy101: I've looked through your articles and assessed or reassessed as necessary. You are certainly welcome to assess your articles yourself, particularly those you think are in the Stub or Start classes. As for GA reviews, Experimenter Gallery is coming on well but you should first try to develop the listed items into running prose. It could also be better illustrated. Most of your other articles still require quite a lot of work before they are likely to qualify as GA. Let me know if you need any additional help with this.--Ipigott (talk) 13:35, 4 June 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks Ipigott for sharing your views and assessment update. By listed items in Experimenter Gallery, you mean the artist list and the exhibitions?
- Talking about other articles, I have a couple of questions - 1) To what extent can we use a single biographical publication for basing the article, keeping in mind the policy of (not) largely relying on one resource. In addition to the existing references, of course. 2) What is the Wiki policy for using autobiographies as a reference?
- Also, just re-iterating my question about the language of reference used. To improve some pages, I've got books in Marathi which I can use since I understand the language. Does it matter during the review whether the reviewer is versed with the language or not? DesiBoy101 (talk) 19:22, 4 June 2022 (UTC)
- DesiBoy101: Yes, those are the two items I meant. As far as possible you should try to work them into running prose; at the very least include a substantial introduction with sources. One biographical source is certainly not enough to support a full article. I always use three as a minimum but for GAs you need far more. As for the Indian languages, to some extent it depends on the reviewer. As for your books in Marathi, you are of course welcome to draw on them but it would certainly help if the passages you use are at least accessible over the internet. Some maintain that for a person to be sufficiently notable, there should also be wide coverage in English while others are prepared to accept local sources. My advice would be to try and include at least a couple of good English sources, for example from English-language newspapers. Reviewers usually pick topics in which they are interested. You might therefore have a reviewer who understands the language(s) but I wouldn't count on it. Autobiographies can be used for some of the detail but should not be used as principal sources unless they have been written by people other than the subject of the article. Hope this helps. Let me know how things develop.--Ipigott (talk) 06:13, 5 June 2022 (UTC)
- Ipigott: Can you share an example of an article as to how can I convert those two sections into a running prose? Regarding the GA criteria you mentioned, it would be difficult to arrange it for the articles that I've created/improved. However, Indian artists like Raja Ravi Varma and Amrita Sher-Gil fit well in the criteria. Former can even be developed to FA in the longer run with the multitude of online resources and public domain status. Although, the user with maximum contributions or creators of the page apply for the GA status, right. So should I work with the major contributors of the page or use some other strategy? Because I haven't edited those pages until now. Let me know about it. DesiBoy101 (talk) 18:29, 6 June 2022 (UTC)
- DesiBoy101: First of all, I should point out that I am trying to help you along on the basis of my own experience but other editors may have other views. As an example of running prose, if you look at the article on Hindi cinema, you will see that many sections are devoted to describing the people involved. not in lists but in descriptive accounts. You could try to do the same. If you wish, you could begin by asking for a peer review of one of the articles you would like to develop up to GA standard. That might lead to more useful suggestions.--Ipigott (talk) 19:03, 6 June 2022 (UTC)
- Yeah Ipigott, you're a super experienced editor which is why I reached out to know your views in the first place. ;) The example on Hindi cinema looks great. I'll try to improve accordingly. Also, the peer review is a good option which I didn't know about until now. Thank you for all the suggestions. Appreciate it. :) DesiBoy101 (talk) 04:36, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

If you have time, could you do a copyedit of this article? I was really surprised there was no article on her since there is so much coverage of her worldwide for a decade. If you don't want to, or don't have the time, it's not a problem. Thanks! SusunW (talk) 14:05, 5 June 2022 (UTC)
Question from LegalPrivacyItaly (14:33, 6 June 2022)
[edit]Hello!
I'm an italian student living in Milan.
I read this page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universit%C3%A0_Popolare_degli_Studi_di_Milano
and i noticed that is not an encyclopedic page, that distinguish Wikipedia. This page is a private ads by a company.
Why is this page published on Wikipedia? This page is locked from edits too, something i almost never seen on Wiki. Can you help me to better understand?
Thanks in advance Regards Paul --LegalPrivacyItaly (talk) 14:33, 6 June 2022 (UTC)
- Hi there, LegalPrivacyItaly, and welcome to Wikipedia. I have looked at Università Popolare degli Studi di Milano and see that it is a well referenced article. Even if you are unable to edit it directly, you can of course post recommendations for changes on the article's talk page. Or just let me know here what you think needs to be changed and I'll look into it. If you are keen to gain experience in Wikipedia editing, you'll see I've left some useful links on your talk page. Keep in touch and happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 17:42, 6 June 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Ipigott and first of all thanks for your kindness.
- Working in drafting and editing several Italian terms on Wikipedia, I understand that the pages must be mainly encyclopedic, and have a non-commercial purpose.
- From what I see, this page is about a small private company that has no public relevance. So this page seems to be a commercial page, and plenty of information on that page does not provide reliabile and valid sources.
- The main problem is that in Italy, this page is ranked often for "Università degli Studi di Milano" and this create confusion in user's mind.
- Furthermore, the page is protected, something very inusual in a free Encyclopedia like Wikipedia.
- Let me know
- Thanks LegalPrivacyItaly (talk) 09:05, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
- LegalPrivacyItaly: As far as I can see, the unusual status of the institution was made clear from the start. More recent edits have also emphasized this. If you look at the article's talk page, you will understand why it is protected. Many Wikipedia articles are protected from editing by those who are not yet sufficiently experienced. The talk page already refers to many of the reasons why the institution has been discredited. Nevertheless, as far as I can understand, the article has been maintained in view of all the sources given. I understand the confusion you refer to and see that the Italian version has an article on "Università Popolare di Milano" which is not the same as "Università degli Studi di Milano". It might be useful to include a similar article in English. You may, of course, also add to the arguments given on the article's talk page. Hope this helps.--Ipigott (talk) 11:50, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
- LegalPrivacyItaly: To add, the article in question is not an advertisement piece. It is an article on an organization perpetrating an alleged hoax that has duped hundreds if not thousands into believing they received true degrees when, in fact, their "degree" isn't worth the cost of the ink used to print it. I suspect that the individuals involved will probably be convicted by Italian courts at some point. Regardless of my personal views, Wikipedia's neutrality policy only states that all positions taken by a reliable source should be neutrally presented. It does not state that an article's content must remain neutral even when reliable sources present otherwise, that would be WP:OR and WP:SYNTH. The article in question very much belongs on Wikipedia because it is notable according to WP:N and WP:NORG. You are obviously free to have a different opinion and to express that on the article talk pages. --ARoseWolf 14:27, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Liva Järnefelt
[edit]On 7 June 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Liva Järnefelt, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Liva Järnefelt performed leading roles at the Royal Swedish Opera, such as Ortrud in Wagner's Lohengrin (pictured), and Bizet's Carmen, which she also performed for her 25th anniversary with the company? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Liva Järnefelt. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Liva Järnefelt), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Thank you for all these singers! - Ukrainian peace music is "on" today, with the conductor! - Pentecost (on last Sunday and Monday in Germany) brought a rich harvest of great music in two church services (one with me singing in choir) and two concerts with my brother in the orchestra, - four pictures I took besides the symphonic one. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:48, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt: You are as always impressively active. There are more opera singers on the way from a slow but sure slogger.--Ipigott (talk) 17:11, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
- Don't say that after I wrote no article in 3 days ;) - I'll look at the Norwegian one today! - I am unhappy about the last (Lizell) which will go to DYK without image, and a boring hook, - should we fight? I had no time so far. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:23, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
- I looked, and need a bit of language help. I find the sentence sourced that she was one of the first internationally acclaimed opera singers, but not mezzo-sopranos. That sentence would need a ref in the lead, because is nowhere in the prose The leading female role in Ballo is Amelia (soprano), and an important one is Ulrica (contralto) but no mezzo. Same about Mozart: no mezzo role. Any hint which aria was her first success? Cherubino? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:39, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt: Thanks for your additional work on this. You are quite right about Wilhelmine Holmboe-Schenström. I've now clarified the description. Will look at your other points later.--Ipigott (talk) 05:38, 9 June 2022 (UTC) I agree that she no doubt performed Cherubino's aria at her first concert but the source is not explicit. I've now referred to "the" aria. As I've now said "specialized in mezzo-soprano", there should no longer be problems with the other roles mentioned.--Ipigott (talk) 05:51, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
- Cherubino has two arias. We could make a footnote about an educated guess. Cherubino would also be most likely for a beginner, just Mozart didn't ebven know the term mezzo-soprano. - Thank you for investigating. I think her sourcing is impressive enough to go for DYK. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:44, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt: That sounds good. I've reworked the lead a bit. Hope you are happy with it now. Sorry your hooks for Lizell were not used and that the image was not displayed. It will be interesting to see how many page views she gets. Nevertheless, by and large I think female opera singers have been having quite a good run on DYK. I'm now working on Marguerite Vaillant-Couturier which also has a nicely restored image although it is not one of Adam's.--Ipigott (talk) 08:38, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt: I think Marguerite Vaillant-Couturier may be ready for DYK if you are interested in taking it forward. I'll leave it entirely up to you.--Ipigott (talk) 18:48, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
- I was merrily out all day, - hope tomorrow or the next day will not be too late? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:38, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt: Today, Monday, seems to be the last day but please don't go to any unnecessary trouble. There'll be more in the next few weeks.--Ipigott (talk) 05:54, 13 June 2022 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt: Thanks for all the useful work you've put into the article, especially that based on her entry in Großes Sängerlexikon. I had in fact searched the GSL for Marguerite Vaillant-Couturier but see now that she is listed there simply as Vaillant.--Ipigott (talk) 06:13, 14 June 2022 (UTC)
- My pleasure, really, learning and doing a little bit of puzzle work. When you see Operissimo, you know that there must be an entry in gls, the question just is if available online or not. I would not be surprised if she performed listed under the short name. Perhaps you can find out from sources, but it's no big deal. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:44, 14 June 2022 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt: As far as I can see, after her marriage she appeared as Vaillant-Couturier.--Ipigott (talk) 06:53, 14 June 2022 (UTC)
- ... wich makes sense since she married young, not after a long career under a maiden name, as some others. gls: it's good to have but not always right, for example lists her debut role wrong. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:33, 14 June 2022 (UTC)

- Coincidence? Yesterday I heard Meistersinger on radio, programmed nicely the day before Johannistag, and today there's nothing better to say about Janssen than Eva, pictured ;) - I'll be out now, but there's more about the cultural background in the Ellis source which might interest readers. I grabbed the opportunity to link Cosima Wagner, - tedious discussion on the talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:45, 24 June 2022 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt: Re the day before Johannistag, in Denmark it's called Sankthansaften when there are celebrations all over the country with bonfires and songs. - Thanks, ARoseWolf: As you are all so interested in Swiss-German folksongs, you might like to see an English translation of Es Buurebüebli- The song simply provides young girls with the comforting message that they'll never find a sweetheart without any faults. In British English, Buurebüebli could simply be translated as "lad" although "farmer's boy" is a more literal rendering. In America "guy" used to mean more or less the same but now seems to apply to girls too. Hope this helps. (cc SusunW)--Ipigott (talk) 18:12, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
- It was a tough one to get to a meaning to explain the film title. The issue when words don't translate well and you don't know the tongue-in-cheek references. While I don't have anything that specifically says the film title was based on the folksong, I think it is worth adding the note about the folksong's lyrics for context. When I finish with Sillge, I'll definitely need you to look at it. SusunW (talk) 18:20, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW: Rather than "I Don't Like the Farmer's Little Boy", I would translate it as "I Don't Like the Country Laddie" but I'll look at it more closely when you are ready with the article..--Ipigott (talk) 20:15, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for offering to look at it Ipigott. I've moved Ursula Sillge to mainspace. Would that I had photos *sigh*, but I don't. Please check the German translations, especially in the trans-title of references, if you would. SusunW (talk) 16:55, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW: As usual you've done a great job on this. The only thing that worries me a bit is that towards the end of the career section there is a reference to Sillge's partner. Would it be possible to document when she started to have a partner and possibly who that partner was?--Ipigott (talk) 18:55, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
- I'm truly not sure. I wish I could access this as it may hold answers, but it wants me to buy a subscription. I'm happy to pay them 0.99€ for the article, but I have no need for a subscription to a newspaper I cannot even read and wouldn't have a clue how to cancel (if I could even figure out the banking routing stuff between Mexico and Germany). I don't know if the two women were business or personal partners, nor whether the 1991 partner she set up the archives with is the same as this one. Sources are sketchy. I only know that she had a daughter (age unknown) by 1986 and at that time she and her partner were co-parenting. On another note, did you decide to leave the film titles the same? Or should they be changed from farmer's boy? SusunW (talk) 19:31, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW: I'll see if I can find anything more on her partner. I gave you my suggestion of "country laddie" but I'm afraid it's too British. I also wondered if "farmer's boy" had not been used in other sources connected with the film. Although the song is widely known, it originated in Switzerland and its title was slightly adapted for the film title.--Ipigott (talk) 19:57, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks! The one source I found in English used farmer's boy. I honestly wondered if peasant boy wouldn't be better, but I think as long as we have the link to the folksong the meaning is pretty clear even if it is "untranslatable". SusunW (talk) 20:07, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
- Just wondering if you were able to find out anything about her partner(s) or if Ingeborg Buck really is a personal rather than a business partner. If not, no worries. Trying to decide if I should nominate it for GA and am sure the question will come up there too. SusunW (talk) 16:15, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW: I made a brief search the other day to no avail. I'll have another go at it tomorrow if you think it's important. I think the "partner" issue could in any case be avoided with a bit of rephrasing. So I'm all for a GA. These people need more airing!--Ipigott (talk) 16:19, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks. Then I'll go ahead and nominate it. If you find something, we can always add it during a review. SusunW (talk) 16:25, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW: Could not really find anything more but I see that in this German source, which you quote, her partner is referred to as her "Lebenspartnerin" (lifelong partner). It also mentions that her original advert provided answers from three women. Maybe there are more details in the book.--Ipigott (talk) 06:34, 21 June 2022 (UTC)

Some help please
[edit]Hi there. Could you help by changing the rating on the Paula Rego article? It is ridiculous that it is still Start Class. On a wider issue, lots of articles seem to get rated as Start or Stub when they are begun and the rating is never touched again, even if they are subsequently considerably improved. It makes me question why we bother to rate articles at all. Thanks and best wishes. Roundtheworld (talk) 08:35, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
- Good to hear from you, Roundtheworld. You are absolutely right that many articles are not upgraded as they should be. Some of us do however consistently devote part of our editing time to assessment and re-assessment. In particular, I try to do what I can with women's biographies. I have now upgraded Rego to B class and have been through the long list of articles you have created, re-assessing those which seemed to need attention. Unfortunately Xtools has been down for the past few days but when it starts to function again you will see that I have upgraded quite a few to B and even more to C. As you have considerable experience in editing yourself, there is no reason why you should not assign more appropriate quality classes when you think this is necessary. I must say, you continue to impress me with all your detailed new articles, already more than a hundred this year, most of them biographies of women. Amazing!--Ipigott (talk) 11:07, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks Ipigott. Much appreciated. Roundtheworld (talk) 08:37, 12 June 2022 (UTC)

Undeletion
[edit]Hello Ipigott,
I am happy to have a chance to talk to you. Last time you reviewed the article about Lola Zunnunova when it was discussed for deletion. Now it is again nominated for deletion by one of the Turkish wikipedi users who do not know Uzbek. He was deleting almost all my articles in Turkish so I didn't argue as he knows better bout the language and people. But this time he is trying to delete article about one of the most influential woman in Uzbekistan. Though, after his nomination, I have updated the article and added more new sources. Please check that out and try to help us to reach a consensus. If there is a doubt about her notability, you may do an independent web research, or asl Uzbek administrators to help you. Lola Zunnunova is a woman who is helping other women in the region for their personal growth. She is a TV presenter and former journalist.
Thank you Lostinniagarafalls (talk) 07:25, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
- Hi there, Lostinniagarafalls, and thanks for getting back to me. You seem to be going through quite a difficult period with several your articles having been recently deleted. In connection with Lola Zunnunova, thanks for the additional references. Perhaps you could check through the existing references and sort them out on the basis of the comments in the AfD. Maybe Film contributor and Theroadislong would like to look at how the article has evolved and comment in the AfD discussion. I'll take a new look at it in a day or two.--Ipigott (talk) 10:02, 12 June 2022 (UTC)

Requesting feedback on draft article
[edit]Hello Ipigott: I noticed that you have an interest in articles about women in business, so I thought you might be willing to take a look at a draft I’ve written about a woman-owned business. It has been declined twice based on tone, but no one has openly denied notability. There are articles on other companies that are directly analogous, such as reverb.com, so I believe notability isn’t an issue.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Thrilling_(Company)
Any feedback you could give would be greatly appreciated. I’ve recently made major edits, but want a bit of feedback before I kick it back into AfC a third time. Thanks for your help! SBCornelius (talk) 20:57, 14 June 2022 (UTC)
- Hi there, SBCornelius. I seem increasingly to be a favourite among paid editors! I agree with the reviewer that the article reads like an advertisement for the company. (See Wikipedia:Advertising.) For it to be acceptable, it needs to be seriously toned down and should include more information on some of the difficulties experienced by the company. See for example this review which highlights the company's lack of support on social media. You could also draw on the Knoji review. It would also be useful to include a section on Competitors (as in the article on Etsy). I would be happy to take a new look at the article once the presentation is more in line with descriptions of similar companies. In this connection, see Category:Online marketplaces of the United States.--Ipigott (talk) 08:57, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
- @IpigottThank you for the quick and extremely helpful response. I'll be sure to let you know once I've reworked it based on the resources you provided. Thanks again! SBCornelius (talk) 15:03, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Ipigott I've done some significant rewriting with your feedback in mind. However, I could use a little clarification on what you intended about "lack of support on social media"? Are you referencing the size of the social media audience on various platforms, or are you talking about a lack of social media use to provide customer support and interactions? Thanks again for your help, and if you could clarify this point a bit I'll wrap up the rewrite soon. 19:55, 28 June 2022 (UTC) SBCornelius (talk) 19:55, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
- SBCornelius: I was simply referring to the information in the links I gave you.--Ipigott (talk) 07:47, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

--Lajmmoore (talk) 15:47, 27 June 2022 (UTC) via MassMessaging
Hallo Ian, I've seen this, alerted because my creation Cara Augustenborg was linked in it. It worries me a bit for a couple of reasons.
- How does a list created today have a message dated 2019 displayed on a template?
- More importantly, there exists a List of climate scientists. Most of the women I've randomly checked from your list aren't in that one. I'd have thought it was more important to get them listed in the main list: certainly worth checking that each one you add is in that list too. But then, why do we really need a "women" list? (This is getting like those discussions about women novelists etc, I know).
- I was wondering, looking at your "sorted by country" list, whether it might be more useful as a table, so that people could sort by name, country, or birthdate, depending on why they wanted to look at a list of women climate scientists. Thinking further, perhaps what would be ideal would be to convert the "List of climate scientists into a table, with sortable columns for name (using a sortkey so that they file by surname), nationality, date, and gender: that way anyone wanting to look at women, or men, could do so, and other readers could get them sorted by nationality or date.
I know it's important to raise the profile of women, but I'm not sure that this list is terribly useful: I'd say that including all eligible women in the existing List of climate scientists would be a much higher priority. Upgrading that list to a table to give access by country and date would be another step forward, and a column for "m/f/x" could be included while converting to a table.
Anyway, that's just my thoughts on it all. I can see you're putting a lot of work into creating this list, just not sure it's going in the best direction! Happy Editing! PamD 19:52, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

Translation
♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:00, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
"For La Nación it was a "simple comedy in its theme and in its dramatic and scenic resources has among its happiest features the virtue of good taste" and Calki in El Mundo wrote:"everything is solved in a smooth way, resolving the conflict... by means of abundant phrases. These have, undoubtedly, poetic intention that, by staying on the way, deviate to the corny." Awkward...♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:48, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
- Dr. Blofeld: Enjoying the Danish summer at the moment. Good to hear from you and see you are back creating articles with Su_hermana_menor. Here's a go at translating from the Spanish version:
- For La Nación, it was a "comedy with a simple theme, exhibiting most pleasingly the virtue of good taste in regard to its dramatic and scenic features" while Calki in El Mundo writes: "everything is smoothly presented, resolving the conflict... by means of an abundance of dialogue. This is no doubt intended to show poetically that by keeping to the road, sentimental kitch can be avoided."
- So that's the gist of it. With your knowledge of the cinema, you can no doubt make some improvements. Let me know if there's anything else I can help with.--Ipigott (talk) 12:52, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks Ian! Yes it's very warm here at the moment too! Some of these film critic quotes don't translate well, I rarely have any problems these days!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:57, 10 July 2022 (UTC)

I've also left you some useful links under my welcome message on your talk page. Please let me know if I can help you further as you become more familiar with Wikipedia. I am trying to find someone who understands the physics part to review what I think that the sources say and whether that is accurate. (Mostly the sources that discuss the science talk in a language I cannot fathom and it was truly difficult for me to try to put in plain English what I thought they said.) I do not know if it would be beneficial to have you look at her now, or wait until that review is done. I usually wouldn't have picked an American, but for WiG's initiative this month, I was trying to pick an article and she seems to be not only the first scientist to predict climate change but a woman, so in spite of my limitation, I decided to work on her. The goal is to nominate it this month for GA and possibly then shoot for FA. Anyway, I would appreciate your eyes on the article if you have time. Thanks. SusunW (talk) 20:00, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW: I have a pretty good background in physics myself as it was one of my three main subjects at school and I spent a year studying electrical engineering at university before I turned to languages. A quick look through the scientific sections revealed no serious problems. I'll look through the whole article more carefully later.--Ipigott (talk) 08:08, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW: :I've just about completed my edits but am surprised at the statement under 20th century which reads: "Foote's experiments confirmed carbon dioxide became warm when heated". I have not looked into the background but it would probably be better to say something like: "Foote's experiments confirmed that when subjected to sunlight, carbon dioxide heated more quickly than air..."--Ipigott (talk) 13:31, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- You are probably correct. Reed says specifically "She also found the result that the cylinder containing carbon dioxide became much warmer in sunlight than the one containing air, thereby demonstrating what we call the greenhouse effect today and is a phenomenon which is of concern to us even now" SusunW (talk) 13:40, 15 July 2022 (UTC)

- Done Thank you again. I truly appreciate your help. As I said, I want the science part to be right. Hard to summarize something you only have the vaguest notion of, but I tried. I truly vacillated on whether to work on her or not, but finally decided to bite the bullet and just do it. SusunW (talk) 14:29, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW: You are too modest. You've done a great job of putting the whole thing into an accessible level of language. I've finished copy-editing for now but may take a closer look over the next few days as this certainly seems to be an article which should be given wide attention. The next step may be to make sure it's mentioned in other pertinent articles on the topic.--Ipigott (talk) 14:34, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- I know my limitations, I get by with a [lot] of help from my friends. Yes if you like review it and its connections again. I'm not sure I made all the proper links and I don't want to rush to nominate. When I pulled up Reed, just now to quote her, I realized she had evaluated the 1857 experiments as well. I do want to give Reed credit for her work and want to add a bit. You will note in the comments that when I saw that everyone was crediting Sorenson for her rediscovery my reaction was, "of course, leave out the women's work on her". He did notice Foote preceded Tyndall, but he was not the "re-discoverer". I've also written to Perlin. He has supposedly been working on a book since 2015. It may be that he has information he is willing to share. SusunW (talk) 14:44, 15 July 2022 (UTC)

- SusunW: Then: "Foote's experiments confirmed that when subjected to sunlight, carbon dioxide became warmer than air..."--Ipigott (talk) 14:23, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW: I'm happy to see you are still working on improvements. I changed "from the Sun" to "from sunlight" as I thought the capitalization inappriopriate. For me, when it is capitalized it refers to the star itself but here it was simply the light cast. But up to you if you want to keep it. It may well be more acceptable in American usage.--Ipigott (talk) 17:48, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- In truth, I find it totally weird myself, but since the person I was quoting from capitalized it, (it was their bracketed note, not mine), I think I have to be true to the source. SusunW (talk) 18:01, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- Apologies: my misunderstanding.--Ipigott (talk) 20:23, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- Okay, I think I have to do a "double hook", something like DYK that "the history of Eunice Foote, who discovered warming of gases could lead to climate change, was recovered by Elizabeth Wagner Reed, whose contributions to science were also lost". (Makes my head explode). But anyway, could you give Reed an eye and then I think I am ready for both to be reviewed for GA. I've asked GRuban to work on photos. SusunW (talk) 21:33, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW: Just completed copy edit on EWR. It would be interesting to know the names of all 22 women she wrote about and see how many are still red-linked.--Ipigott (talk) 11:26, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you so much. I truly appreciate your help. Elizabeth Cary Agassiz, Catharine Esther Beecher, Jane Colden, Eunice Powers Cutter, Dorothea Lynde Dix, Foote, Lydia Folger Fowler, Sophie Bledsoe Harrick, Mary Putnam Jacobi, Laura H. Johnson, Frances Green McDougall, Maria Mitchell, Margaretta Hare Morris, Hannah Bouvier Peterson, Almira Lincoln Phelps, Mary Amelia Swift, Charlotte de Bernier Taylor, Jane Taylor (science writer), Mary Townsend (entomologist), Ellen Smith Tupper, Jane Kilby Welsh, and Emma Hart Willard. A lot are still missing. They should go on a redlist. I'll try to do that today but must take Les to visit the doctor. SusunW (talk) 13:42, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW: Thanks. It might be useful to include a paragraph about them in her biography, perhaps grouping them by area of interest. At the moment, as far as I can see only two are mentioned. At the very least, they could be listed on the article's talk page. There could also be a short article on American Women in Science before the Civil War providing it has been adequately reviewed or mentioned in pertinent works on "recovering" forgotten women scientists. I hope I'm not overburdening you with additional work but I'm sure there will be wide interest in all of this.--Ipigott (talk) 15:03, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- (talk page watcher) There are four fewer red links now! I've made redirects from the names above to Sophia Bledsoe Herrick (from a typo); Hannah Mary Bouvier Peterson (from a shorter name); Frances Harriet Whipple Green McDougall (from a shorter name); Charlotte De Bernier Taylor (from a different capitalisation). Herrick/Harrick was just a mistranscription (all sources sem to say Herrick, including EWR), the others show the virtues of redirects from all plausible versions of people's names: the dates match up so I'm confident these are the right women! Happy to help. PamD 15:17, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- Found a very detailed source on Jane Kilby Welsh, for anyone inspired: here, a whole chapter of a book The Women Who Popularized Geology in the 19th Century. Where Reed says her birth and death dates are unknown, this book chapter has a birth date and parentage - twenty years more availability of sources, I suppose. PamD 16:00, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- PamD Thank you soooooo much for your help. (I'm back, hubby has a severe ear infection, ugh) Ian, I've input a note. There is also the source on Swift[3] which the Resource Exchange provided me to write Reed. George has found a photo of EWR! We're researching copyright. SusunW (talk) 16:37, 18 July 2022 (UTC)

Question from Changanga on Economy of Kenya (08:29, 15 July 2022)
[edit]Want to add Nairobi image --Changanga (talk) 08:29, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- Changanga: If you are thinking of adding File:Nairobi economic capital of africa.jpg, you could include it in the box for the article. This would give:
{{Infobox economy | country Kenya | image = Nairobi economic capital of africa.jpg | image_size = 310px | caption = Nairobi, the financial centre of Kenya ...
I see however from the article's history that this image was included in earlier versions of the article and has now been removed. I think it would therefore be better at this stage to make a suggestion on the article's talk page.--Ipigott (talk) 09:36, 15 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi Ian - No rush on this, but if at some point you have time/inclination, would you please take a look at this article's title. I struggled with choosing the best version, e.g., the capitalization, the colon punctuation, and the spacing around the colon. I'm not sure I've made the best choice of the several options I viewed online so another opinion by a French speaker would be appreciated. Perhaps Anthere might have an opinion, too. Thanks. -- Rosiestep (talk) 15:00, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- In French, we do not capitalize so much. It should either be L'Alarme: société française d'action contre l’alcoolisme or L’Alarme. Anthere (talk) 17:55, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, Anthere; I appreciate your guidance with this and I've moved the page. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:58, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
- Been away for a couple of days but I'm pleased to see Anthere has sorted things out.--Ipigott (talk) 14:57, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
- (talk page watcher) @Rosiestep and Anthere: Watch out for "curly quotes"! I've moved the article. And it needed a redirect from the short title, which Anthere had suggested as an alternative title: I've now made redirects from both the right and the wrong versions of the short title. I think that now covers all the most likely possibilities. (And found a few curly quotes to fix in Temperance movement too, en route.) PamD 06:57, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- Curly quotes are a HUGE pain in the neck for I. At some point, I had convinced my computer to STOP changing those all the time. But it reverted to this bad behavior. This is very annoying each time I want to bold or italic things and yes... I regularly have issues with wikilinks to (such as when I write about WikiChallenge Ecoles d'Afrique. It really really is annoying... Anthere (talk) 11:17, 25 July 2022 (UTC)

I have added scholarly evidence to velama page in wikipedia but sharkslayer removed it could you please tell if wiki biased or unbiased because most of top editors they do behave like one sided. --Prn14kdvm (talk) 17:53, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
- Hi there, Prn14kdvm. I'm happy to see you are back editing after a short break. I tend to agree with you that Sharkslayer87's overriding your edit by restoring an earlier version of Velama is rather surprising. I was however unable to access the book you used as a source. Are you able to provide an internet link or are you quoting from the book itself? I'm pretty tied up today but will try to take a closer look tomorrow if your edit has not been not restored.--Ipigott (talk) 15:37, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Ipigott,I reverted to the previous version as the source used by the user refers to a ballad. Ballads are not usually accepted at face value. Please check the source and take a right action. I won't involve in this anymore. Thanks Sharkslayer87 (talk) 04:22, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for your explanation, Sharkslayer87. Prn14kdvm should look for more reliable sources.--Ipigott (talk) 06:35, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
Question from Temujinthewolf (01:35, 25 July 2022)
[edit]Hi, do you have any suggestions for improving as an editor? Is it mostly just reading various policies and then practicing? --Temujinthewolf (talk) 01:35, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- Hi there, Temujinthewolf, and welcome to Wikipedia. I've left a few links on your talk page which should help you get started. One easy way to discover the basics is through The Wikipedia Adventure. It's also useful to see what other editors have been doing with articles in your sphere of interest. Please let me know if you run into any problems. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 06:31, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
