Trying to finish up the Catalan women's bios which I started earlier this year. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:49, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

The Foxcroft Building in SF might interest you... I can't find anything on when it was built. It's a redlink in William Ashburner Cattell. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:02, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Thx for sleuthing. I came up against the same thing. Must not be super notable, or was/is known by another name. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:57, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Eureka! I'll have the article up in a few minutes thanks to you pointing me to 68 Post Street in that url. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:09, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Context

[edit]

You kindly filled some red links off BWV 172, - City Castle (Weimar) could be expanded, and possibly moved to a better name, - a Schloss is not a castle, and we disambiguate by comma, ot backets, in English ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:26, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

and Philipp Nicolai is tagged also, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:58, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

It could be expanded yep, but I don't speak German!♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:40, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

For red links, that seems to be no problem ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:14, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, well I only do an initial start which is quickly proofed by you! Last couple of times I suggested an expansion of something you said you were too busy to translate! Expanding articles a lot takes time!♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:17, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for getting rid of the tags for the hymnist, here's another, Breitkopf & Härtel. I AM busy, that's why I ask for help ;) - Don't expand the palace then, but how do you feel about a move? "City castle" is simply wrong, and if that name is sourced, it can't be a reliable source ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:30, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker)City Castle is used on the English website at http://www.klassik-stiftung.de/index.php?id=359 but I agree entirely - it is hopeless and proves nothing other than the web manager's grasp of English idiom, which it is unfair to criticize. There MUST be a better usage ... DBaK (talk) 15:08, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
And this uses "City Palace" which is still gruesome but somewhat less bad than City Castle. My vote would be that it is in effect untranslatable and should simply be given in German. But I am shutting up now, so hey. DBaK (talk) 18:30, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
Will take the reasoning with pleasure. Weimar is not a city now, and certainly wasn't when the Schloss was built. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:50, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
Sigh, it's Residence Castle and City Castle on the WHS page, - not the first time that the "World Heritage" names are not preserving world heritage, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:07, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

shining article creation
Thank you for creating innumerable substantial missing articles, such as Musikhochschule Hannover, Johan van der Meer and John H. Dessauer, sometimes before I even ask - at least that's how it feels, - repeating: you are an awesome Wikipedian (18 March 2009, 9 May 2009)!

--Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:35, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

Two years ago and a while, you were the second recipient of my PumpkinSky Prize, can't be repeated too much, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:28, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Aw thanks Gerda!! LOL, honestly though I hope you didn't think I was asking for one! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:35, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

It's not "one", it's a repeat of the same, still applies ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:01, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Lol OK, well a hearty danke anyway!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:27, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Althorp

[edit]

The article Althorp you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Althorp for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already been on the main page as an "In the news" or "Did you know" item, you can nominate it to appear in Did you know. SchroCat (talk) 19:56, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Totally stoked! Althorp has become a wonderful article, and it's the first time I've received The English Lady's Aristocratic Barnstar. And btw, cool way to end 6 years with wikipedia, tomorrow being my 7 year anniversary. Looking forward to working on other articles with you! --Rosiestep (talk) 15:13, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Candacraig House

[edit]

Hi Dr. Blofeld, I noticed you added a red link for Billy Connolly's Candacraig House (and policies); if you're planning an article I have a very small amount on the house from David G. Miller's book "Tudor Johnny: City Architect of Aberdeen". John Smith did some work altering and extending it in 1835 although not much of that part of the house remained after the fire of 1955. There are reams of castles/country houses in Aberdeenshire and the north east that are still privately owned. SagaciousPhil - Chat 16:08, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

@Sagaciousphil: Sounds good! Yeah I was planning on starting it later this week, not today though!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:22, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

2008 riot in Mongolia

[edit]

I am thinking of nominating 2008 riot in Mongolia as a good article, would you mind having a preliminary look at it for me? Yours in evilness, --kelapstick(bainuu) 22:52, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Off hand I think it needs a bit of work. The leede is quite short and some of the paragraphs could use some strengthening.♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:28, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

Much thanks, I will do some work on it. --kelapstick(bainuu) 12:21, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

Gemini FAC

[edit]

Gemini (2002 Tamil film) is at its second FAC after the first one stalled due to lack of activity. It would be helpful if you post your comments on the FAC page. Kailash29792 (talk) 04:33, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

At least some kind of a reply could do. Kailash29792 (talk) 11:00, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

Kailash don't do a Prashant on me LOL. Did you ask a question? I'm sorry. I'll try to look at the article within a few days but FAs require special effort to read and review and I haven't found the time to focus on that yet.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:13, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

I'm sorry if my actions were disturbing. The article's previous FAC had stalled due to lack of activity, and I don't want it to repeat. Kailash29792 (talk) 12:13, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

If I haven't looked at it by this time next week then feel free to prompt me!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:35, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

You can return to the FAC anytime you want, but two personal questions: is there any formal alternative for "big-shot don"? and at least how many "support" tags are needed for a FAC to be promoted? Kailash29792 (talk) 10:44, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

Location maps

[edit]

Hello Doctor. I thought I'd give you a heads-up on my intention to migrate the previous Location templates for Indian city maps to the Module space where they will use Lua. I know you created the New Delhi map and there are probably others so I just wanted to let you know of the changes in advance. Shiny new SVG maps from OpenStreetMap data will also be produced as a result, which will cause your PNG images to be tagged "SVG available." Best,  Philg88 talk 08:50, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

@Philg88: Excellent, please do link me some as you progress.Does every province of China have an svg yet? Some of the major cities could use some svg locators too for landmarks with a window of the location in province/China. We badly need some svg locators of some of the Indian states too I think. Cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata needs maps though with window locators in the corner in state to put city location in wider context.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:41, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

Many thanks for the comments. There are still a few Chinese provinces that need maps - there is an aide memoire on my talk page, which I'll get around to sooner or later. As for the Indian cities, I've now worked out a relatively non-tortuous method for extracting SVG data from OSM and cross referencing the co-ordinates. I'm going to do a few cities (New Delhi and Kolkata are done). Eventually, the provinces and major cities of both countries will be done with insets where appropriate. This article has been on my radar for some time, and I've been particularly unhappy that he's been passed off as "some bloke in a MOR band who shot himself accidentally". So when I found a source that described him as pretty much the most criminally underrated guitarist ever, to the extent that Jimi Hendrix thought he was better, I thought it's time we did something about it. I've made a start, but I thought this might be right up your street to help improve, if you're up for it. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:21, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

@Ritchie333: He said the same thing about Rory Gallagher!♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:43, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

I suspect he might have said it about Alvin Lee too, come to think of it. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 08:15, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

He'd have said it about even Noel Gallagher :-). Or maybe not..♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:18, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Oy, Blofeld, haven't you got articles to improve? :-P Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 08:22, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
I'll try to look at it early next week. Looks a good start, I think with a bit of work it'll be ready for GA actually.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:23, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Just for a laugh, I wonder if we can do the same for The Argument Sketch? It crops up in a surprising number of book sources largely detached from Python itself. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:06, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Well, I was thinking of working on a Fawlty Towers episode but I couldn't find much on it. Might be worth it if you can find a lot on it!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:09, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

@Ritchie333: Do you like Mike Pratt and Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) at all? It's one of my favourite TV shows and quintessential late 60s London! I've been hoping to get some of the episodes up to a better status. The official website on it has done detective work on finding the locations in each episode!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:38, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Never really watched much telly, but I'll tell you what - since Smuckola's picked up Kath and done quite a bit of work himself, I've put it up for GA now, and if you review that, I'll review one of these when it's ready, and probably enjoy reading it in the process. Sounds fair? I used to have a Guinness Book of British Television which had about six pages devoted to Fawlty Towers, but I gave a lot of my old book sources to charity shops years ago, never thinking they'd be useful for WP sourcing. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:13, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Me neither, I try to focus on films, but Fawlty Towers, Randall and Hopkirk and the Avengers are so wonderful!! I'm sure @MarnetteD: would vouch for that!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:14, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

As a long time Anglo-TV-phile I can and do vouch for DB's assessment. Even the second version of R&H had some good moments :-) MarnetteD | Talk 17:40, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Whenever you get some free time, I would appreciate if you could put your comments at the FL nomination for Dadasaheb Phalke Award. You probably know that its the highest award in Indian cinema. - Vivvt (Talk) 02:20, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Hey Dr. B! I was wondering if you'd be interested in reviewing one of my remaining two GA nominations: John Baker White (clerk of court) and Charles M. Williams (American academic). All the best, Caponer (talk) 13:37, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

@Caponer: Sure, I'll review John Baker White (clerk of court) within the next three days. If nobody's snapped up the other by the time I've reviewed and completed the other I'll do that one too.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:58, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

[edit]

Good day Doctor! As per your suggestion I have created a new location map for Mizoram, which I think is an improvement over the old one. I wish whoever it is in India decides what shapes these states will be wouldn't come up with long pointy ones. It makes it very difficult to produce an aesthetically pleasing map. Definitely better with the stills. Pictures always seem a big improvement to me. I tend to stick them all to the right, or in galleries though, because of concerns about how they format on a small screen, like a phone or tablet. With IMDb, I don't really see a problem saying that is where I got a list of films, or a list of cast members, if that is in fact where I got it. Better to identify IMDb as the source than give the list with no source. IMDb is generally fairly accurate, although it may of course have errors. I find errors in all sort of sources, including books and articles in learned journals. Albert Lewis (producer) was born in a) 1884, b) 1885, c) 1889. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:55, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Main Page appearance: Enid Blyton

[edit]

This is a note to let the main editors of Enid Blyton know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on June 24, 2014. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at present, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/June 24, 2014. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Child Whispers by Enid Blyton

Enid Blyton (1897–1968) was an English children's writer whose books have sold more than 600 million copies. She wrote on a wide range of topics, but is best remembered for her Noddy, Famous Five, and Secret Seven series. Her first book, Child Whispers (cover pictured), was published in 1922. Following the success of her early novels such as Adventures of the Wishing Chair (1937) and The Enchanted Wood (1939), Blyton went on to build a literary empire, sometimes producing fifty books a year. Her work became increasingly controversial from the 1950s onwards because of the alleged unchallenging nature of her writing and the themes of her books. Some libraries and schools banned her works, which the BBC had refused to broadcast from the 1930s until the 1950s because they were perceived to lack literary merit. Her books have been criticised as being elitist, sexist, racist, xenophobic and at odds with the more liberal environment emerging in post-war Britain, but have continued to be bestsellers. The story of her life was dramatised in a 2009 BBC film, Enid, featuring Helena Bonham Carter; there have also been several adaptations of her books for stage, screen and television. (Full article...)

You (and your talk-page stalkers) may also be interested to hear that there have been some changes at the TFA requests page recently. Nominators no longer need to calculate how many "points" an article has, the instructions have been simplified, and there's a new nomination system using templates based on those used for DYK suggestions. Please consider nominating another article, or commenting on an existing nomination, and leaving some feedback on your experience. Thank you. UcuchaBot (talk) 23:01, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Film suggestions

[edit]

I saw your recommendation on Krimuk90's talk page. I have not watched it yet, but do you have any others? You can find some of my favorite foreign films at User:Bollyjeff#International_films_tour. Have you seen any of these? BollyJeff | talk 13:15, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

@Bollyjeff: Yes I've seen about half of those. There's still a lot I haven't added to my User:Dr. Blofeld/Great films! I recommend any of those! Particularly the ones in bold! What sort of films are you into? If you really like emotionally touching ones then the film I most recommend is Ikiru, one of the best films ever made IMO and Kurosawa's best film. I presume you've seen City Lights and The Kid (1921 film)? Sayonara had one of the most incredibly moving scenes I've ever seen in cinema when a couple commit suicide because they couldn't bear to be parted which won them both Oscars I think. Days of Wine and Roses I think deals with the frustrations and emotions surrounding alcoholism brilliantly and has some great scenes like Jack Lemmon going apeshit in a greenhouse. The Turkish art film Bal also a masterpiece. A lot of people complain about the length but IMO Novecento is a brilliant film, just needed cutting by an hour or 90 minutes though! It's sort of like eating 10 big plates of your favourite pasta though, too much of a good thing.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:28, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

I can second all of Dr. B's recommendations Bollyjeff. Back when userboxes were all the rage I always wanted to make one that read "I thought Seven Samuarai was Kurosawa's best film until I watched Ikiru". Another mark of its greatness is that you can watch at different points in your life and your reaction to it will change. By that I mean that your life experiences will heighten and enhance your appreciation of the film. Cheers to you both. MarnetteD | Talk 16:31, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
Dr B. Back in the 1980's one of my cable stations showed 1900 on Saturday and Once Upon a Time in America on Sunday. I still describe it as the weekend that I spent with Robert de Niro :-) MarnetteD | Talk 16:31, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

If you want a top notch crime film Jeff try The Killing which I think is Kubrick's most clinical film, even if not his very best in terms of artistic brilliance like 2001 and Clockwork.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:38, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

You should watch 10 Rillington Place too. It really creeped me out! -- KRIMUK90  16:39, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
Yeah I forced Krimuk to watch that one hehe! The creepiest film I've ever seen. The scene where he murders the pregnant girl by gassing her and then raping her in that musty old flat room with the horrid decor and then the look on his face as he does it would be a good candidate for creepiest moment in film history! Peeping Tom also a masterpiece! The Tenant is also a must see, seeing Polanski as a woman!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:40, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, I am waiting for the film to grow on me. But naah, I can't. It was too creepy. LOL! Peeping Tom was excellent though. KRIMUK90  16:45, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
That ranks up there K but Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom is hard to top for sustained creepiness. MarnetteD | Talk 16:47, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

True! Sodom does have some really creepy scenes, disgusting, but overall I thought 10 Rillington more creepy because of the realism thing, and being in the same street it happened in. Sodom is more shocking/disgusting than "creepy" as such I think...The house Krimuk in 10 Rill was very much like Fred West's house at 25 Cromwell Street which had bodies hidden in the walls and gardens and stuff. That horrible sordid mustard yellow colour and the evil wallpaper!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:49, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

*Shivers!* -- KRIMUK90  16:51, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
If you haven't heard of him read all about it in the article, although isn't not a very good one. Fascinating, but the creepiest house ever, Rosemary West's "parlour" for "entertaining" black male visitors and the decor and all that, I can't think of anything more repulsive!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:54, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
That reminds me of Kathy Bates' character in American Horror Story: Coven. Delphine LaLaurie, the creepiest woman I have ever read about! -- KRIMUK90  17:01, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. Checking your list, I see Ben-Hur gets a high rank, but not some of Heston's other works, such as The Ten Commandments, Planet of the Apes, and Soylent Green. You don't like those? BollyJeff | talk 15:54, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
Ten Commandments and Planet of the Apes should be on the list, but yeah, a lot of his films I don't find particularly great. He often turns me cold as an actor. El Cid was beautifully shot for instance but he lacked chemistry with Loren and the screenplay was pretty average. I would add it based on visual merit, but it's difficult to really consider the film overall to be "great". I've seen a fair few like Pony Express, The Wreck of Mary Deare, Midway, El Cid, Julius Caesar etc and don't rate them. The Big Country is a very good one though, as is Greatest Show on Earth, Khartoum and Touch of Evil which I already had. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:11, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

@Bollyjeff: @Krimuk90: I've created a key for User:Dr. Blofeld/Great films and the films which I really think are great rather than just very good are now in bold. All of the ones in bold are the ones I highly recommend!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:52, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi. I think I've gone through most of the suggestions in the GA review, and trimmed out quite a bit of unnecessary fluff. I think my main problem now is the history section for the Middle Ages is looking a bit bare, though that might just be because I liked the aesthetic look of the church picture (which now belongs elsewhere). What do you think we should do? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 18:06, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

Just glancing it already looks much improved. Better for the history to be bare in parts than unfocused and jumbled! I'll have a look tomorrow most likely.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:15, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

That's not good enough, Blofeld, I want my green blob now goddammit, and if I don't get it I'm going to throw a total and utter hissy fit, complain on ANI, and get boomerang blocked ... no wait, this is all sounding like a bad idea, actually. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 18:19, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

@Ritchie333: Transport could still do with some cutting, but the article is much improved, well done!♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:55, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

Sir William Hamilton

[edit]

Re this edit, do you have a source for linking to William Hamilton, 11th Duke of Hamilton? It's unlikely, though not impossible, that so grand a nobleman would be teaching University classes on logic; but even before he succeeded to the Dukedom he was Marquess of Douglas and Clydesdale and would not have been referred to as "Sir William". JohnCD (talk) 16:45, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

It's highly likely it's the wrong Sir William Hamilton. I picked it up on Charles Matthews's talk page which had a huge list of articles needing dabbing. Perhaps you should ask him which one it was.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:00, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

Digging about a bit, it was evidently Sir William Hamilton, 9th Baronet who was "elected in 1836 to the Edinburgh chair of logic and metaphysics". Cheers, JohnCD (talk) 17:24, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

I'll take a look.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:04, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Sigh. You still haven't changed have you? I haven't anything against you or the list LOL. I said it would be very nice to see it listed on that date, but it's not the end of the world if it doesn't. He did have a valid concern about too many Indian lists at once, even if I don't fully agree with him. I'd like to see it appearing on that date but there's no use kicking up a storm and crying over person who opposes it is there? Why is it when something doesn't go your way you take literally everything personally?♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:09, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

I think you're a good editor and much appreciate the work you do on Indian cinema, although your prose quality and English isn't always as good as some of the other Indian editors on here (particularly in conversations) but it must be difficult writing in language which isn't your original one. But I do think whenever you see anything slightly negative you overreact and can become quite rude to people who are even on your side and dig a hole for yourself which is completely avoidable. I hope given time you'll learn to curb that. I'm pretty easy going and rarely hold grudges against anybody, but if you do ever rant at me about something then I'm more likely to remember you as being a childish fellow rather than a decent contributor. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:27, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

@CambridgeBayWeather: The problem is that most of us will agree 7 or even 5 citations is excessive and this is confirmed in the guideline. Yet if I or Schrod remove them we'll be blocked for reverting again. If Banner had been any normal editor on here he'd have thanked me for my edits and carried on elsewhere. You are aware that he's only been permitted to return to editing on condition that he doesn't edit war and assumes good faith. Sure this isn't about Irish parishes but he's reacted in a way which was the reason why he was initially indefinitely blocked by HJ Mitchell. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:30, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

So you assumed I was thinking when I left my message. Of course I wasn't. Really what I meant was edit warring from the unprotection, taking the unprotection to be a clean start. I did notice that reference two and three were the same thing. That could be merged into one reference. CBWeather, Talk, Seal meat for supper? 13:36, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

I proposed replacing them with a single source [1] but Banner claims it isn't reliable. Clicking the about in Dutch it mentions it has 7 million odd newspaper in circulation which would indicate otherwise. Brazilian films

[edit]

Yeah, it's true! Sadly, hardly we can find such a list there (this kind of list is really hated in Portuguese wiki). However, to expand List of Brazilian films of the 1980s I looked into this category. Translate from Portuguese wiki can be somewhat useful; I've noticed a lack of pre-1960 films there, though. Banner, I am entirely calm, apart from being surprised that you've decided to go into edit war mode YET AGAIN. Despite your lies above, I certainly do not want an edit war, although it seems you are either desperate to edit war, or have such a claim of ownership that you cannot see anything straight. I suggest you self-revert, take the article off your watchlist and move on. Having said all that, I know have further evidence of you failing to AGF and lying to go with the rest of abysmal behaviour recently. - SchroCat (talk) 19:18, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
Did you already forget your block for edit warring that ended this afternoon? The Banner talk 19:27, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

No, and I have not edit warred here. I reverted a bad edit: you took the opportunity to revert for a second time. I suspect that if another editor rightly reverted you, then such is your strength of ownership claim on this article, you'd STILL revert again and again. I have not come across an editor with such a poor attitude before. - SchroCat (talk) 19:38, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

You have such a lovely negative attitude. Everything is always my fault and you are never edit warring or rude. Why don't you try to live up to AGF? The Banner talk 21:20, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Stevns Klint/Danish coverage

[edit]

At Ramblersen's suggestion, I've started an article on Stevns Klint. As a geographer, you might be interested in contributing to the geology section. There seems to be plenty of material in English. You may also have noticed Ramblersen has compiled extensive lists of historic houses in various parts of Denmark which should help with work on the new task force. (Thanks for pushing the initiative.) And while we're on the subject of Denmark, I hope you'll soon be able to take a new look at Esbjerg and Port of Skagen, both expanded according to your wishes. Once we're happy with these, we'll be able to move on to Odense.--Ipigott (talk) 08:54, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

@Ipigott: Yep, I also expanded the port and it's currently at GAN. I am interested in geography, true, but geology doesn't interest me very much. I have noticed the Danish house lists and I'm wondering whether they'd be best merged into one list, List of historic houses in Denmark. The list of historic houses main branch list though is a great idea and should of course try to be as global as possible. Will look at Esbjerg again this week which is our current GA goal! Look forward to Odense or Aarhus...♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:58, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

I'm fine with a merger o the historic houses lists (cf. Ipigott's talk page where I proposed it) but I justwondr if it won't become too long (listed maor houses alone add up to almost 400=? But I suppose it can always be splitted up again if dos.Ramblersen (talk) 09:18, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

Hehe check out how many List of country houses in the United Kingdom has! Yes I think it's probably best to merge for now. A tabled list with 400 odd entries might get big but we could always add a shrinkable table option. Good idea.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:21, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

Okay I have merged most of the lists for now but kept Copenhagen separate since it will make it possible to make an overview section and keep its basic structure (central, suburbs, surroundings). Feel free to merge it with the main list if you think its a terrible idea. There are a lot more houses to be added so it will also help it from getting too long, though.Ramblersen (talk) 10:44, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

Looks good. Can you make the tables stretch across the whole page though? I think they'll look better that way.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:53, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

Sorry not to have been able to participate in this discussion as I have been out all day. Personally, I'm in two minds about the lists of historic houses in Denmark. I certainly think it is a good idea for the time being to keep the Copenhagen area separate but listing the houses by the principal islands, etc., also had advantages. The various lists provided a more focused approach to coverage and wikilinking, etc., but maybe the way we have it now has its advantages too. As for stretching the lists across the page, I think that as they are expanded with notes, etc., they will fall more naturally into place anyway. I like, for example, the way Peter I. Vardy prepares his lists (e.g. Listed buildings in Sandbach) with substantial descriptions of all the buildings, including those without specific articles. Maybe we could adopt the approach for some of the not-so-notable houses in Denmark. On the subject of Port of Skagen, my apologies for not noticing your recent work on the article. (I have been looking at all your interesting work on films and on the history of Paris.) Please alert me if you need any help with the GAN. If you would prefer to work on Aarhus rather than Odense, I have no objections. It is already quite well developed apart from the inclusion of inline sourcing. Odense, on the other hand, will require a lot of work (which would probably better for Wikipedia quality improvement. And on Stevns Klint, let's wait to see if anyone else is interested in expanding the article. Maybe someone from WikiProject Geology (e.g. User:Mikenorton) would be interested? --Ipigott (talk) 16:06, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

Yes, but there's a lot of listed buildings in every area, Sandbach likes his other lists covers all buildings. This is just historic houses and as far as I can see most areas don't have a huge number of entries to constitute splitting them so it's more convenient to have on one page. Copenhagen does have a particularly large number so would best with its own page. It would be different of course with lists of listed buildings where there'd undoubtedly be too many to list on one page.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:09, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

I realise that. I was just citing his list for its presentation, i.e. concise descriptions for the items covered.
  • I've also just seen here that Stevns Klint has indeed been added to the Unesco World Heritage List. I hope that will raise interest in the article. Maybe it needs an appropriate box?--Ipigott (talk) 16:32, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for helping to get Port of Skagen up to GA and handling all the mechanics. Now back to Esbjerg, I hope.!--Ipigott (talk) 12:06, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

Sad news

I just saw that Eli Wallach has died and I remembered our discussing TGTBaTU several years ago. Yahoo's announcement even used a pic from that film. Of course, he had many other wonderful performances and a few of his films grace your list. My deep commiserations. MarnetteD|Talk 21:21, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

Yes, he was a legendary actor. Loved him! He had a very good innings at 98 though! Excellent in The Misfits, The Magnificent Seven, How to Steal a Million, Seven Thieves, Godfather III and numerous others. Baby Doll, his first is next on my list to watch. I saw Bus Stop (1956 film) earlier and hated it, Don's performance in it really irritated me. Disappointing as I've seen most of the director's other films and loved them.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:25, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

I think you will find BD interesting. Tame by today's standards it raised a ruckus at the time. I saw the one act play 27 Wagons Full of Cotton that it was adapted from. It featured Lesley Ann Warren and was as steamy as could be. Somewhere on the extras for the DVD of Once Upon a Time in the West they mention that Eli talked with Henry Fonda about how much fun he had working for Sergio and that helped convince him to do the film. That's interesting as in reading Clint's biographies I got the opposite impression and that Clint didn't enjoy working with Sergio and found him to be an asshole and demanding and was the reaosn why he turned down Bronson's role in Once Upon!! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:08, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

The more I read and add to this new (small) article I started, the weirder and more bizarre it gets, so naturally I thought of you. You seem to relish the unusual. Dennis Brown |  | WER 22:43, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

Haha that's certainly a chilling museum!♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:07, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

  • I found a couple more photos, including one for the "Bath of Surprise" and "Rectal Dilators". I couldn't resist adding them both. Dennis Brown |  | WER 16:38, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

I appreciate this isn't "please help me with my article" but I was distraught to hear that Camden LBC seem to be quite happy to demolish Denmark Street. ([2], [3]) I have had fond memories of popping up here every time I'm in Central London, not least from buying a Rickenbacker 4003 bass there from a shop in 2000 (and living off lentils for about a month afterwards as a direct consequence). We need to do its article more justice - I thought the version I looked at yesterday was a copyvio. Let's bulldoze that and rebuild it, not its real-world namesake! I've made a start on history, but I'm a bit busy over the weekend, so if you (or anyone) who wants to dive in, please do! Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 08:32, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Why would they do that? It's an important street to British heritage!♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:36, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Your guess is as good as mine, but I really hope they don't! Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 08:38, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Well, in Cardiff Spiller's Records is no longer in the original building and has been demoted to an alleyway!♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:40, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

I despair..... Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 08:43, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Do you want to work on it gradually then? I think it would be worth working on due to its music history connections. I think the list of notable connection would be best converted to prose and put in history. Then a guide to the buildings of the street by address would be good. BTW check out this for virtuosic guitar playing!♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:56, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Well, I was thinking a good article could fall out of it, but I'm just a little unsure where to start. I've found a couple of books to mine though, so there's definitely potential. You're right that the list should be converted to prose. The demolition plans and their opposition also needs expansion. I'll tinker with it a bit later today if I've got a mo. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:16, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
  • I like working on London streets and have visited Denmark Street many times since the days when Forbidden Planet was located there. I still walk down it frequently and so can take further photos, as needed. I have just made a start by adding a former inhabitant. And note that Simon Edy had his pitch close by, outside the church of St Giles. Andrew (talk) 12:16, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Yeah I think it's great to have very good articles on streets. They're nice to write too as it's a small locality. It would be good to get it up to GA status. I've just started Great Denmark Street in Dublin which opens up more notable red links..♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:25, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Looking good so far chaps, well done. The article has over 5x times more prose than this time yesterday, there's only one [citation needed] tag left and a few other bits that need sourcing tidying up, and I have a DYK QPQ credit in hand. Just sayin'..... Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:21, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Looking better yup. I think some of the music trivia in parts might be trimmed a bit though and that section reworded and copyedited so it doesn't still look in note form.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:26, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Looks to me as if Denmark Street is already a candidate for GAN if you are interested.--Ipigott (talk) 06:04, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

I think it might need a bit more research first. The lead for instance mentions Forbidden Planet but says nothing of it in the article.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:53, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

@Ritchie333: How much more work do you reckon it needs before GA nomming? The lead could use some reinforcement and covering of the Forbidden planet in the article. With a bit more info from some good books I think it should be ready.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:53, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

@Ipigott: I moved your post to the relevant section. I did reply.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:15, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

It's at GAN now. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:01, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

Final work on Esbjerg

[edit]

I don't know why but for the first time in years we are experiencing serious problems with the Wikipedia servers for Luxembourg (same problem on different machines and on both fixed lines and mobile). I have been able to access the text of the Esbjerg article and have made a few additions on the courthouse and churches but am afraid to do more until things return to normal. I also see you have added a bit on the ferries. Maybe you could nominate for GA now and we can return if the reviewer identifies items requiring attention. Thanks in advance.--Ipigott (talk) 13:18, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

The server problems seem to be over for the time being and I have been able to look at the full article once more. The only thing that really worries me is the poor quality of some of the images, especially: File:Esbjerg_fra_oven.jpg, File:EsbjergShopping.jpg (now replaced), and File:Esbjerg_(8563657852).jpg. Should we really keep the other two?--Ipigott (talk) 14:10, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

@Ipigott: I think you worry too much about images! We hope uploaded the last one especially and even if it isn't with bright blue skies and crystal clear it's a very valuable image of the town from afar and signpost. I've already nommed it!Those are probably the two most valuable images in terms of capturing the town in the article IMO. I suspect images look worse on your monitor than my 28 inch monitor.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:23, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

I don't think many Wikipedia users have 28" screens. More and more access Wikipedia via mobiles such as iPhones. In view of your concerns, I have just viewed the images in question on a large PC screen, on an iPad, on an iPhone and on my standard Hewlett-Packard Pavilion g6 screen which is said to provide excellent quality. I agree with you that the views do provide strong insights but I don't think they will come across very well to the majority of users. We can keep them for now if you want but we should try to find improvements. Thanks fr nominating the article.--Ipigott (talk) 14:38, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
Great work, both of you, on this article improvement. Let's see what the reviewer says about the imgs. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:57, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
@Rosiestep: Thanks also for your own work on the article.--Ipigott (talk) 16:17, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Brazilian films

[edit]

Dr. Blofeld,

Yes, I would do you a favor and leave the list of Brazilian films to you. I understand that you have a system going. Thank you heavily for your amazing contributions to all the articles on Brazilian films and such. Robert4565 (talk) 18:04, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Need a bit of help

[edit]

Hey, hope you've been well. I was looking through the Central America WikiProject for somebody who might be able to help clear up this slight issue I've encountered, and yours was the only name I recognized. I have no idea how much you know about Honduran geography, but I figured that with your long history of editing international city articles, you might have some insight to offer. Feel free to ignore if this is completely out of your realm. – Juliancolton | Talk 14:02, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

You might be interested to know that there are 888 Medal of Honor recipients still in need of articles. They all have fascinating stories, and I've found them simple to create. I've started a goodly amount, anything you could do would be much appreciated. P.S. I'm still dreaming of houses. Gareth E Kegg (talk) 15:19, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know but those US bios aren't really my cup of tea! I'd rather be putting the time into non Anglo centric bios! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:22, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

Well, I shall leave you to your traitorous endeavors then :) Gareth E Kegg (talk) 22:57, 28 June 2014 (UTC)

Gatoclass (talk) 08:02, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

A couple of days ago, I suggested this might be a good candidate for GAN but you may not have seen my message. Now that it also has benefited from further improvement, it looks to me as if it could be nominated with little or no additional work.--Ipigott (talk) 05:16, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
