Payroll
[edit]Hi. I would like to know if someone could put the pro's payroll in a matter that is better formatted? I have little time to really edit (little experience with Wikipedia or any sort of HTML)
In my opinion, it's a necessary information to add as it shows the current state of the pro gaming era.
I could try to give out source soon.
Thanks (p-s: sorry for adding the payroll again. I thought someone deleted it for no reason.)
SOURCE: http://www.fighterforum.com/news/news_read.asp?cat=ISS&idx=11210 -- for all skT1 players
http://www.fighterforum.com/news/news_read.asp?cat=ISS&idx=11389 -- for all MBC players
BTW: Their payroll does not include other factors that brings them money, such as advertising, money for tv appearances, pc bangs, tournament winnings etc..
I've moved the salary information here for now as although it's correct as far as I've seen, it's poorly formatted and unsourced. ShardPhoenix 15:19, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
Elky
[edit]I think Elky should be added to the list, or perhaps just to the infobox, as he has his own page. I have no clue how to edit the infobox though http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bertrand_Grospellier 93.105.146.121 (talk) 22:41, 11 September 2001
the only reason it would be nice to give elky a spot on this is so that you could give a link to his personal article. but in sc, he was never notable other than 1) being french 2) awful hair 3) being room mates with guillaume.
Shinhan Proleague and teams?
[edit]A summary of the proleague would be pretty relevant wouldn't it? It's newer but they play a lot of games and get about the same amount coverage as the OSL and MSL. LxRogue 08:08, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:SkyProLeagueFinal.jpg
[edit]Image:SkyProLeagueFinal.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Aliases
[edit]Seeing that the names of the players link to pages irrelevant from starcraft, (Like stork, it links to the actual bird) should we change the links? (Besides iloveoov and players with their own page.)
Failure.exe 02:52, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
- Well, eventually, these people should all have their own pages, and we can use proper linking for the common names ie [[Ma_Jae-Yoon|sAviOr]]Debivort 04:13, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
Nomenclature
[edit]One could add something about shortcuts and abbreviations being used here. I had to think what "TvT" or similar (for example while "toss" suggest Protoss :P) means. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.87.13.70 (talk) 16:53, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
deletions of Stork and FBH
[edit]An anonymous editor is persistently deleting the sections for these players. I restored the sections, re-wrote them with citations and then they were deleted again. There is no reason they should be deleted now, as they are now in line with WP policies, such as WP:CITE and WP:NOTABILITY. I hope other editors of this article can weigh in on this issue. de Bivort 21:26, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
- wow damn. Someone restore that stat. Where is the AfD page? 98.203.237.75 (talk) 04:26, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
Too many notable players?
[edit]I think that there are way too many players listed in the notables section. There should be a pretty high threshold at which a player should be able to be placed on the list. --Must WIN (talk) 21:28, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- Agreed - I usually like preserving random stuff on wiki, but this may be taking it a bit too far :) Tehniobium (talk) 01:02, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

- Some of the players listed are definitely are not within the top 20. Elky and FBH are not notable enough in my opinion to warrant a spot on this list. Someone can make an individual article for many of the players on the list however. --Must WIN (talk) 01:00, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Who the hell is Kenneth Thorn? 70.42.116.9 (talk) 08:40, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
I think that BeSt should be removed from this section. The short piece about him is written poorly, and it is factually inaccurate. The text states that he is the best protoss player in the world, which might be true, depending on how you rank the players. According the the KESPA rank, which is mentioned in the article, he is the 7th ranked protoss player. However, if you use the elo ratings, Best is the top protoss player--but elo ratings are not mentioned anywhere in the article, while KESPA is. I don't think I should be the one to change that though, I'm not a good enough writer to get the point across concisely. Also, his notability is very questionable, especially in such a long section. 208.74.181.42 (talk) 10:48, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
- I agree about the lack of notability, he hasn't even won a starleague yet and even if he did, that's not enough, there are plenty of starleague winners who didn't make this list regardless. 213.250.11.252 (talk) 02:38, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
I think this section should either be made into its own page or severely edited - there are many players here who are not notable, and some notable players who are not here. Above someone mentioned that FirebatHero is not worth mentioning but though he has not finished well in tournaments he has been a well known Zerg slayer. He also is notable because of his post-game antics and his rivalries. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.78.32.200 (talk) 19:05, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

- You guys realize this is a wiki right? You are free to add any of this yourself. It is appreciated to discuss things on the talk page first but asking people to add stuff you could just as easily add yourself is a bit annoying. LonelyMarble (talk) 07:10, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
if this were REALLY NPOV, GOM would be a one line article, compared to MSL/OSL's 30 paragraph articles.
Formality, length, and citations
[edit]This article is written in a very informal tone, using players' aliases rather than their actual names (an English-speaking internet phenomenon not seen in Korea or formal settings), using contractions, refering to specific abbreviations without first introducing them, etc. Furthermore, the page assumes some knowledge of StarCraft, which while a reasonable assumption for most listeners to a commentary, is not reasonable for viewers of an encyclopedia entry.
This article needs far more explanation of the organization and history of the Star Leagues and ProLeague in Korea, the culture surrounding the game, leagues, and progamers, the average age of progamers, basic information on each race, and rules and regulations. There is also no mention whatsoever of the existance of semipro leagues outside of Korea, which though not the focus of the article, nevertheless deserve recognition. The article right now should be Start Class, as it's length is only a result of the numerous specific progamer sections, all of which can be considerably shortened, since links to main pages already exist. Where main pages do not exist, a page should be created (even if it's just a stub with little more than copied text from this page), and the notability of said player should be reconsidered.
Perhaps even more importantly, there are no citations in this article for any of the specific players, whose sections comprise the majority of the article.
Finally, several sections of the article are outdated regarding important pieces of information, such as recent performance for several players (the performances listed as "recent" are not so for some), GomTV's new commentator Artosis, and the current standings in the OSL and MSL. Possible Explanations
[edit]I don't know a lot about StarCraft; I only played it for a brief time myself a while back. However, is there any particular explanation for why South Korea has gotten so into it? Many orders of magnitude above its popularity anywhere else? Certainly, various activities and sports vary in popularity from country to country, and some (e.g. American football) are largely confined to a single country. But this seems particularly odd, not just because it's a video game but because it's one that was (unlike, say, American football) released to potentially interested parties the world over...and yet South Korea picked up on it to a dramatically greater extent than anywhere else. If someone has any theories about this (is it a fluke? is there some social factor? etc.), it might be interesting to post links. --GenkiNeko (talk) 07:16, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
I think I read somewhere that around 1998-2000 there were some sort of restrictions on business that led to PC gaming LAN places getting set up all over instead of bars, and simultaneously the TV stations couldn't play a lot of shows due to trade restrictions, so they were looking for something new to fill airtime. 67.9.148.47 (talk) 05:51, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- There's only one explanation... Lim Yo-Hwan, but seriously, starcraft is the #1 selling PC game in USA, and more copies were sold in korea than in usa. I think koreans discovered the depth of the meta-game and how much complexity there is to it. They were first, but they won't hold the SC title forever. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.41.151.165 (talk) 12:38, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Notable Players: Edits
[edit]I redesigned the notable players page, organizing it by race played, with the aim of making it easier to read. As per some of the comments left on this page, I paired down the number of "notable players" as well, with the aim of only including those who achieved very real dominance, or have, or are revolutionizing the game. I edited some of the tenses to reflect present conditions. Starcraft is continuously evolving, many of the players who were at one point considered good, have been left behind by the game. I removed Firebathero, Xellos, Reach, GoRush, and Nal_Ra for these reasons. I added Fantasy on the strength of his recent second straight runner-up OSL finish, and because his pioneering of mech against zerg has led to a renaissance of this strategy. --69.118.102.57 (talk) 19:06, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
- Lim Yo-Hwan is currently far from being among the top players. According to your reasoning, he should be removed from the list, which makes no sense considering he's one of the most well known players ever. The greats of old are far more notable than many younger players against whom they'd loose today. Xellos and Nal_Ra are certainly historically more notable than Fantasy and BeSt, so removing the former while including the latter makes no sense. 213.250.11.252 (talk) 02:47, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
- Another well known player of old, Reach, has just recently become the first player to achieve a hundred wins in proleague. How is anything BeSt has ever achieved more notable than this? Yet BeSt is on the list of notable Protoss players while Reach isn't. I agree that the inclusion of at least two players on the list, Fantasy and BeSt, is very questionable. 89.143.168.83 (talk) 21:13, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
ugh. In my opinion the players of the past are indeed the most notable, with the older and younger starcraft community. Many of the names on this list still have yet to prove themselves to be a solid contribution to starcraft culture and gameplay (IE stork best tossgirl fantasy flash.. maybe even jaedong), and yet Xellos and Nal_ra get removed? It's similar to the list of currently sponsored teams out there. There were other successful teams on the pro scene as well.. and yet no mention that this list is only a list of currently active teams? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.86.101.131 (talk) 05:27, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Xellos and Nal_Ra need to be added back. I believe there was a national geographic documentary about Xellos, you can find it on youtube. 67.9.134.143 (talk) 07:30, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
- I'm adding Giyom back...his record speaks for itself and is cited. —pfahlstrom (talk) 04:11, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
I have added Nal_rA back. If you think that Nal_rA, Reach, and Xellos have not revolutionized the game, I think you really need to check up on your SC history. Reach was one of the first protosses who adapted to the macro style of iloveoov, Nal_rA's contributions are quite obvious- the infamous PvZ Reaver Sair build, his cheese, and his dominant PvT. Xellos is known for his beautiful TvT. 76.254.20.166 (talk) 16:28, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
hm. i am willing to put some time aside to do an overhaul of the section.. but.. how many players total should there be? i think that 9, touching briefly on 3 generations of sc players from each race EG boxer//iloveoov//flash yellow//majaeyoon//jaedong garimto(or grrr)//nal_ra//bisu but i get the feeling it's going to be torn apart by users here if i don't throw it in a seperate article, listing TONNES of players, which i'm -NOT- unwilling to put time into. we need to come to a consensus on what we're going to do. i get the feeling that if its a seperate article, then we have to get organized as a community and get cracking at it. thoughts?
- Well, all the frequent a-team proleaguers are notable, so they should all have their own articles. What I propose is that this section not have blurbs on the players, but simply links to their respective articles. That way we feel no need to cap the total number for length reasons. de Bivort 03:18, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
- what about the old proleaguers? are they not notable? the list will be huge to have every a-team player ever
- They are notable too, almost certainly. Basically, if a reliable Korean source can be found on them, they are notable. Typically this would be an interview or profile in a print magazine or paper. As for the problem of too many, that seems like a "we'll cross that bridge when we come to it problem." For now, all the players with sections here can have their own articles, and since there aren't that many they can all be linked from the main article. When a lot more player articles are written, we can leave a bunch of the most prominent players' articles linked directly from this page but also have a list of professional StarCraft players page to soak up the rest. de Bivort 05:01, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
Why the hell was grrr removed? He was the widely considered the best player before the rise of Boxer. White bonjwa, won the first osl, yada yada yada? How is he not a notable player? Sure his performance went down hill, but he is still easily one of the biggest influences in protoss- more so than Garimto, arguably. [sep 1 09]
- If you were to limit this article to three players of each race and move the rest to their own articles (which I don't disagree with), wouldn't NaDa be more notable than iloveoov for the Terran three? 213.250.11.222 (talk) 17:24, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
- I think that's a reasonable suggestion but a moot one. All the players should have their own articles, particularly the three most important of each race. de Bivort 19:22, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

notable players section
[edit]Hey - took a crack at simplifying and standardizing the Notable players sections. All the players with blurbs but no articles of their own, now have articles of their own, as well as links from the Notable players section of this article. Each section had 3 players that already had their own articles. So I left the blurbs for each of them hear, and added standard main article links to their personal pages. Also standardized much of the formatting.
The new articles for each of the players are quite raw and could do with proper Hangul names, and wikifying - please chip in on that!

Tossgirl as best or only?
[edit]you seem to think that she is the only female pro, but you are mistaken. there are many others such as: Berry, JongMi, Navy, January, tulip, sunhee, carot, 13etty, anna, d0d0, fish, kanghuny, precious, puzzle, vitamin, y"-"o, arima, gano and others. also, if she is the only pro, why do u think they still occasionaly hold all female SC events in korea? so yes, i will change it back
- As I understand it, she is the only one with a pro license and the only female to compete in the proleague. Please provide a citation to show that these other players have a license and compete on teams, and are not just very good amateurs. Also, while constructive discussion and work is welcome at wikipedia, personal attacks such as the one you left at my talk page are not welcome. de Bivort 04:33, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
i dont care about "personal attacks" anyway, competing in the proleague does not merit someone a progamer. that is a single league, while there are many others in korea. by definition, a progamer needs a liscense. a progaming liscence is now obtained through playing in the courage tournament. however, it was previously obtained through numerous ways. one of them being finishing in the top 8 of Ghem TV's tournament twice. that is how many females earned there liscence. such as january, the current coach of Samgsung, and she also used to play on that team (u can find that on TLPD) other players, such as jongmi and navy, have competed in the OSL and MSL prelims. to compete in those preliminaries, u must be: on a progaming team, and have a pro liscence. u can find those games in tlpd. therefore, they were pros. (in those cases, jongmi was on OGN Sparkyz and Navy was on Samsung Khan) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.236.189.100 (talk) 01:25, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Flash
[edit]Given the events of the last 6 months, Flash needs to get a fully fleshed out description in this article. His ELO has been hovering above 2400+ (next highest is less than 2300) for an extended period of time and he's consistently crushing all of the best S-class players. People are saying that, skillwise, he is the best player of all time - and that's not even a controvertial statement anymore. Everyone basically agrees. 70.112.187.225 (talk) 20:48, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- Well, he has his own article, which could certainly be expanded. I think the question for this article is, should we replace one of the other three "example" terrans with Flash? I would be fine either way - sticking historical, or being current. But, I don't think having more than 3 players as examples per race is a great idea. de Bivort 21:15, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Anyone with thoughts on that? de Bivort 04:41, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
- I'm for it, and it appears you are. Nobody else really frequents this article, and Brood War is accurate, I"m for it. NativeForeigner Talk/Contribs 05:04, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
- What is the real mention of a small expansion going to do? I've got feelings both ways. Buggie111 (talk) 12:53, 13 September 2010 (UTC)
I don't see why this article should specialize on Brood War competition, as far as I can tell competition has carried over to new games in the StarCraft franchise (Starcraft 2) with professional tournaments being held in locations around the world (GOMTV in Korea, Intel Extreme Masters in Germany and America, MLG, etc.) and the title of this article seems inappropriate considering the recent surge in popularity of e-sports triggered by Starcraft 2. That being said, I don't think Starcraft 2 professional competition deserves its own page, but rather that this page should be condensed and re-categorized to better suit the current state of the StarCraft franchise and not just the Broodwar scene in Korea.Ernzoa (talk) 23:35, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
- Two years later, IMO, the current title is def. irrelevant. Any thoughts on Ernzoa's proposal? 109.20.168.3 (talk) 04:19, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
- Topics don't stop being notable when they stop happening (c.f. history). If there are reliable sources for SC2 competition (I'm sure there are), then that topic merits its own article. de Bivort 14:12, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
Starcraft II?
[edit]There is a some information about professional Starcraft II competition in a section in the main Starcraft II article; however, it is not mentioned in the main article here. Should we make a new section on Starcraft II now, or wait until more concrete news appears? Also, if we add this section would it belong at the bottom or the top of the article? Old guy 476 (talk) 19:17, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
- I think we should move this article, per immediately above. And start a StarCraft II professional competition article provided it has the notability / citations. de Bivort 04:36, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
Korean Bias
[edit]While it is true that the professional StarCraft scene has always been and is largest in Korea, I think that this page is not as globally exhaustive as it could be. With the release of Starcraft 2, there has been a surge in esports popularity in the Europe and North America, with tournaments like Intel Extreme Masters at Gamescom (Cologne, Germany) and Comic Con (New York, USA), MLG (Raleigh and D.C.), and others. The only "notable pro gamers" listed are Koreans and the bio for each player is a bit lengthy considering the overwhelming scope of the topic. If each player has his/her own Wikipedia page anyway, then there is no need to reiterate all of that information in this article. The second half of the page is all statistics copied from external sources with no context, and I don't think that it belongs in this page. There already exists a wiki for the in-depth statistics: http://wiki.teamliquid.net/ Ernzoa (talk) 23:35, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
- Hello, I agree with most of what you are saying. However, this page is about Brood War pro competition, which is mostly Korean. We should start a new page about SC2 pro competition. Perhaps you'd like to take a crack at it (Your CSL section was nice, and well cited)? The choice of notable players was heavily constrained by limiting the total number to 3 per race for the length/readability of this article. You'll see from the SC template at the bottom of the page that some non-Korean BW players have their own page. de Bivort 05:50, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
- May have to change the article title to include the overall scope of Starcraft competition. As it stands, it is overly focused on the South Korean scene. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 11:43, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
- I suggest to start StarCraft 2 professional competition instead. There is next to no professional competition outside of Korea for Brood War, but it looks like there will be quite some of it for Starcraft 2, so mixing these two doesn't seen that wise to me. --Conti|✉ 13:06, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
- Instead of focusing on SC2, just focus on Starcraft as a whole. The point is to encompass ALL of it. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 20:18, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
- Starcraft and Starcraft 2 are two different games. They aren't interchangeable, so we shouldn't treat them as such. --Conti|✉ 20:40, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

- They have the same game mechanics. Economy. Micro. Macro. Etc. Even though the two versions have different units and graphics, they're fundamentally the same game. It just happens that SC2 has more enhanced features, like control groups and building queues (with the Shift key). KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 21:13, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
- This article is long enough already. SC2 competition needs its own article. de Bivort 22:21, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
- While this article could be reduced, a separate article may be necessary. Length and content will be determined in the future. Though note, it is important to focus on the competition itself (including history, development, procedure, etc.) rather than the players themselves. For the players, a list may be in order. Competition articles must focus on the competition. (This bears repeating). For example, the Super Bowl focuses on the game itself, rather than those who performed in it. GSL
[edit]Oh, just a side comment, yes, I managed to see the GSL World Matchups last night. It just shows that the international scene is quite capable of competing with the Korean scene. Yet, the Korean focus stems on the fact that - they televise Starcraft competition, where as, that is not done elsewhere. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 21:15, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
- Well, GSL is SC2, right? Korean dominance in SCBW is clear from WCG results. It's really time for us to start a StarCraft 2 Brood War professional competition article.
- There's no StarCraft 2 Brood War. Just StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty. --Windom (talk) 01:07, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
