Requested move 19 September 2020
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: Plasma (Engine), IW Engine - consensus to move, all others no consensus
There have been five !votes including the nomination, of which three are supports and two are opposes (one against all but Plasma (Engine), and the other against only Silent Storm and Quake). A simple counting of !votes would deliver this result, but assessing the arguments made also leads in this direction. Particularly ferret's point on natural disambiguation is important and SnowFire appears to have had a look to see what the state of play is in terms of natural disambiguation in the referencing (which also ultimately indicates a potential WP:COMMONNAME if this is how people are naturally referring to it). I am satisfied that IW Engine is not a natural disambiguation if this is the result of that analysis.
Against this we have perceived consistency, an argument that is not without merit, but per policy parenthetical disambiguation should only be used where other methods of disambiguation supported by policy fail to deliver an optimal title (i.e., Natural disambiguation should be preferred). In ictu oculi is right that something already parenthetically DAB'd should at least be consistent with other parenthetical DABs hence Plasma (Engine) should move.
I did consider another relisting, but this discussion has seen no movement since early last month and none more is likely. A "no consensus" close does not foreclose further discussion on movement if the nom or anyone else wants to have another crack at these.(non-admin closure) FOARP (talk) 22:05, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- Silent Storm engine → Silent Storm (game engine)
Euphoria (software) → Euphoria (game engine)- IW engine → IW (game engine)
- Plasma (engine) → Plasma (game engine)
- Quake engine → Quake (game engine)
– The most common disambiguation in Category:Video game engines is "(game engine)", so this change would make the titles above WP:CONSISTENT with the rest. Maggie (library), Moai (software) and Phaser (game framework) might also belong here as they are in this category but I wasn't sure. Gonnym (talk) 07:16, 19 September 2020 (UTC)—Relisting. Jerm (talk) 15:56, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
I have no opinion overall, but Euphoria should not be moved. It is not a game engine, you can't make games with it. I've fixed the article to remove the misleading game engine references suggesting as such. Pathogen-David (talk) 08:03, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
- Removed. --Gonnym (talk) 08:05, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
- Opposed on all but Plasma. WP:NATDAB should take persistence over any parenthetical disambiguation. Has sourcing been evaluated in all 4 of these cases? Common names should also be followed, a sourcing is almost always going to go with these NATDABs. But, in the case of Plasma, a move is probably needed due to possible confusion with Plasma engine. -- ferret (talk) 13:52, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
- Support, not just Plasma but all. Quake appears to be called Quake. IW called IW. Once something is parenthetically dabbed it make sense to have recognisable dabs WP:CONSISTENCY with others in category. In ictu oculi (talk) 14:11, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
- Support, mostly because the (engine) or natural disambiguation can easily be confused to refer to a real life engine.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 09:30, 20 September 2020 (UTC)
- Strong Oppose Silent Storm and Quake; no opinion on the rest. Parenthetical disambiguation implies that the term is used as just that within the field, but nobody when talking about "Quake" or "Silent Storm" within gaming wouldn't be referring to the games-themselves (that is, Quake (video game) and Silent Storm). If you want to refer to the Quake engine, you would always write, well, "Quake engine". It'd be like moving Development of Grand Theft Auto V to Grand Theft Auto V (development) - nobody talking specifically about the development would call that development just "Grand Theft Auto V".
