Neutrality

This article is becoming against the pereson in question, see its recent history.--Happyhaydn 13:43, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

This article is being used a proproganda in support of Rajapaksa and is factually incorrect. The most apprent is the continued insistence of Rajapaksa's pro-peace stance and the removal of any critisism of Rajapaksa and his current governemt. Gtjlaw 05:54, 25 May 2007 (UTC)Gtjlaw

Moving

I moved Mahinda Rajapakse to Mahinda Rajapaksa because that's how his official website refers to him. see http://www.primeminister.gov.lk/. Greenleaf 07:05, 29 August 2005 (UTC)

Has he changed his name or its transliteration? There is still 10 times more hits in google for Rajapakse than Rajapaksa... aegis maelstrom δ 00:21, 23 November 2005 (UTC)
No, his family uses Rajapaksa. There are Rajapakse's who are not connected to Rajapaksa's.

Human Rights abuses

The article should not start with this section. Even Hitler's article doesn't start with the Holocaust! Should start with a bio, history in government, etc., then these abuses. Starting with this is clearly biases the article.

I have moved the abuses section to the end as has been suggested.

He is of Karave caste ?

User Supermod (1. He is from the GOVI caste. And caste is not important in this world, may be except for tamils. 2. Human rights? He has to defend the country as the president from the terrorists. Discuss on talk p) The above comment is propagandist very least and racist if not. Caste is of very important factor is Sri lankan politics. The Politics of New Sinhalese of South Indian origin versus traditional Sinhalese has been commented upon by sociologists who study Sri Lanka. Because his last name is that of Soldiers of ertswhile kingdoms shared by many coastal New Sinhalese from South India who are very active in Sinhala nationalistic politics as observed216.95.23.114 03:48, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

He is of the Karawe caste and should be proud of it. He is the saviour of low caste people. We want him for that. Mahinda Rajapakse is from the karave caste.

Who said so? He is from the southern part of Sri Lanka. His family has owned most of lands in the area. He is from the Govi caste.

Regarding srilankan ethnic strife

This is after reference to the book “Declining srilanka: a legacy of jayawardene regime: Cambridge ,2007”. While I do agree that you have tried to present a satisfactory picture of the current scenario and also stepped in with a good call against authoritarianism and partisanship, that destabilized your nation few decades ago, I would also like to make a few observations on what I see are not correct assertions.

First of all it is absolutely incorrect and unrealistic to give a 2000-2500 year history for the current ethnic strife in Lanka. It would be an exercise in pure futility to saddle up in entirety the perceptions, views, moralities and attitudes of current civilizations on those that existed then. Surely they were different people in many aspects and it was a different era. Even in your book you have agreed that a good number of those who claim to be Sinhalese now had actually been lat 16th century immigrants from southern as well as other parts of India. Those mercantile colonizations were mainly sponsored by the upper deccan plateau based vijayanagar dynasty of 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries(not to say the big horde that came down following its decline). Needless to say, many midgetty and petty rulers from Orissa etc may have participated in the colonization that took place in what could be regarded as the dark age of India. A large and certainly majority of those who speak tamil for native language nowadays have also come down from deccan and settled during those days certainly not as great conqueror but as infiltrant and landgrabbing colonists. So it is not correct in manner to consider the late medieval era bogey to be identical with the ones of illustrious chola/pallava times. Even by the virtue of religious practices which mattered not that much, they differed from the ones of chola/pallava era. For example the ones during that era had incorporated practices like proselytization and mercantile religious processions, which were totally foreign to the ancient vedic system. In many cases the members of different strata were encouraged to wear sacred thread and become priests and performers of sacrificial rites and also made members of gotras ( lineages) previously ordained to the members of brahmin caste. This has created a lot of confusion. Also some important temples in south now were actually buddist/jain sites which were converted to vedic shrines with the help and suggestion of buddist/jain patrons of those shrines.

Looking at events and things from a partisan standpoint( of say language, religion, region, etc) etc can lead to colossal mistakes being made as your typecasting people irrespective of origin, and time and character into one. Where as it is certainly possible to say that this approach is not correct, not accounting for the time factor may lead to serious mistakes. A 2000 year timeframe for a dispute of this nature is a sell out. Giving it a 100-150 years time may be optimistic. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.163.192.187 (talk) 13:54, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Moving dubious content to talk page

The following section is dubious. I don't believe anyone notable has held President Rajapaksa responsible for any of the following.

  • Human Rights Watch has accused the Sri Lankan government headed by President Mahinda Rajapakse of complicity and failure to respond to widespread anti-Tamil violence (pogrom) in Trincomalee town [1].
  • The UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial killings noted circumstantial evidence of widespread government (headed by Mahinda Rajapakse) extrajuidicial killings of Tamil civilians [2].
  • SLMM Mission head, Ulf Henricsson has accused Sri Lankan government forces (could be rogue elements) of complicity in extrajudicial killings of civilian in Tamil Tiger strongholds in the island's North East [3]
  • US State Department Human Rights Report 2005 notes unlawful killings organized by government agents, forced disappearances, imprisonment and torture and discrimination based on race, sex, disability, language and social status particularly after the election of President Mahinda Rajapakse [4].
  • Reporters Without Borders report murder of Subramaniyam Sugirdharajan, a correspondent of the Tamil-language daily Sudar Oli in the eastern city of Trincomalee shot dead for exposing murders and abuses committed by suspected government backed Tamil paramilitary groups [5].
  • Reporters Without Borders report raids on Tamil newspapers, Tamil journalist have been killed, received death threats, repeated physical and psychological threats, been arrested, detained and harassed by members of the state security forces [6].
  • Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Sri Lanka Free Media Movement (FMM) all voiced outrage over the lack of progress in the investigation into the murder Tamil journalist Dharmeratnam "Taraki" Sivaram, the editor of the Tamilnet news website and columnist for the Sri Lankan Daily Mirror newspaper on April 28th 2005 [7].

As per Wikipedia policy I'm moving them to the talk page until required sources are given. Do not reinstate them unless Reliable Sources are given. --snowolfD4( talk / @ ) 23:42, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I've gone through an quoted the relevant section on Rajapaksa for the 1st source at least. There may be claims but the sources have to accurately used. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 04:32, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
Ok, the Reporters Without Borders link (the last one) at least has a mention of Rajapaksa, even if it is peripheral. The rest are just general complaints against the government. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 04:54, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Yeah Thanks Ricky81682, the sentence is a whole lot better now. No allegations without citations. Saying a "significant deterioration" is still pretty strong though, considering, only two incidents are cited, and one of them has, in your words, only a peripheral mention of Rajapaksa. But, like I said its a lot better. --snowolfD4( talk / @ ) 15:45, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Relations to Anura Bandaranaike and size of cabinet

In early 2007, Rajapaksa sacked 3 ministers who were allegedly conspiring to assassinate him, Anura Bandaranaike and 2 other ones, only to put them back into his cabinet 2 weeks later. One could maybe add this. Also the growth of the number of ministers under his rule to an unprecedented 102 ministers and subministers should be mentioned. 62.131.79.6 11:50, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

POV in Presidency section

The Presidency section currently contains the following POV material, some of which may also fall under Original Research:

Rajapaksa assumed office of the President when the need of the hour was for a decisive economic growth. During the first three years of his tenure, Sri Lanka reawakened under his bold leadership.

During his first 3 years of office, Rajapaksa succeeded in handing down severe defeat to the LTTE terrorists handling the security forces as the Commander in Chief, successfully facing the challenge of routing terrorism. The President should be saluted for taking the initiative and for being the driving force behind the humanitarian operations, giving leadership for soldiers engaged in this task under difficult conditions. A notable feature is the massive development taking place in the country while humanitarian operations are continuing.

The rural community rather than the urban dwellers have identified the outstanding service discharged by the Rajapaksa. His direct foreign policy has registered an indelible mark in Sri Lanka's political history. It was under his leadership that highest number of foreign leaders visited the island. He has created an environment for all public employees to serve in liberty. Not only in Sri Lanka, but the attention of the world is focused on the services he had rendered on behalf of the entire nation during his term of office. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.26.111.99 (talk) 23:16, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

If Sinhalese pick up the arms and fight the government they are insurgents. And Rajapakse had sympathy for them!!! But, if a Tamil journalist criticize the government then he is a terrorist. Do Tamils and Sinhalese have the same rights?

Watch this interesting documentary made by Al Jazeera. Check 4:40, Rajapakse sharing the fear for Tamils. He saved many Sinhalese people from the government. But who is going to save the Tamils from his government? More horrible crimes crimes are now unleashed on Tamils by the same Rajapakse. He is telling the same story like the previous governments. Nothing much has changed.

Rajapakse transformed from a Sinhalese human rights activist to a mass murderer killing many Tamils. Check the poor mother who lost his son. There are thousands of mothers like her. Today as a Sri Lankan I am proud of my country, my people and my leader because I can hold my head up high and say that we have squashed all our enemies and the country is united. All because of your leadership and the sacrifices of our armed forces personnel. My president I am proud and thankful to you because as a Srilankan living in foreign shores I can say to anybody who asks about terrorism in Srilanka, that it is no more and my country is free. In the past if we may remember,,, not a day passed without people living in fear of bus bombs, suicide attacks and other cowardly atrocities commited by those terrorists. They are no more because you have squashed them and as Sri Lankans we are fortunate to have had a true son of Lanka as president. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kapilaranawake (talkcontribs) 15:36, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Human Rights Abuse Section

Added section on human right abuses since the President Mahinda Rajapakse coming to power. US State Department, Human Rights Watch, The UN, Reporters without Borders, SLMM, Asian Human Rights Commission all have reported on the gross human rights violations by the new regime. Can't argue all of these organizations noted above have a biased point of view including the UN. I am sure not everyone is going to like this but, these are credible sources, with credible allegations including countries and organizations considered friends/strong allies of Lanka.

SLMM Statement

Ulf Henricsson said the following in an interview to govt. owned Sunday Observer (May 7th 2006), quoted by Tamilnet [8]:

Speaking on the controversy surrounding SLMM's press release which "charged the SLA of extra-judicial killing," and later "toning down of the statement" after discussions with Colombo, the Retired General said, "we still feel that [security forces are involved with extra-judicial killing]." He then added that after talking to Colombo, "we hedged that avoiding going back on the issue."

"We never said it was security force as a whole, we think there are parts of it, small groups or individuals, we don't know. That is why we said individuals belonging to the security forces are involved. Involved, does not mean they have done it. But they have not done anything to prevent it. They have not seen anything. They have not heard anything that is a problem. If you can commit a murder one hundred meters from the check point and if they don't see anything, don't feel anything, that is a cause for concern. That is the problem," Henricsson explained.

Nepotism and Alleged War Crimes

The editors Fuzzbuzz and Magnocrusher2007 have added the section Nepotism and Alleged War Crimes, which I have expanded, yet the user LahiruG wants to remove these sections because they are not present in articles such as George W. Bush or the United States Army. What should happen to these sections?--Blackknight12 (talk) 15:09, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

The article to compare would be Omar al-Bashir, who is the president of Sudan, another is Robert Mugabe, president of Zimbabwe. The argument that the similar information is not available on George W. Bush, so it should not be made available on this particular one is not an acceptable argument. The fact that Blacknight12 has been called a LTTE sympathizer or in effect an terrorist by LahiruG here is very indicative of the POV position in the edits. This has to be taken to third opinion first, then arbitration eventually . Kanatonian (talk) 22:49, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
If neutral sources can be found to back up such section, go for it. However, I am talking about neutral, academic sources put out and published by i.e. Regional Studies Institutes on an international level by academic publishers and not by more or less biased media on both sides. We all know (or should know) which families own which publisher in Sri Lanka. No CoI-sources, please. So dig through libraries, scan available docs/paras, upload them, so that we all may discuss them and see if they indeed back the sentences in such section. Yes, it is painful but in view of the difficult situation down there, I feel it is necessary. Also: Since there are two official languages in Sri Lanka with differing scripts, BOTH need to be included and transcribed. General sort order: Language of majority, Language of Minority, if there are more than one language of Majority and Minority, Alphabetize the sort order. Anyhow, good luck and the suggestion to first add additional sourced content here BEFORE it is included into the lemma (encyclopedic entry) itself. छातीऀनाएल - chartinael (talk) 10:34, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
I have been following this dispute but have so far avoided getting involved. There have been so many users involved and so many blanket reverts that a lot of confusion has arisen about the motives of the contributors. As it's already been pointed out, LahiruG's argument that "other articles don't contain such content and therefore it shouldn't be included in this article" isn't a valid argument on Wikipedia. The allegations leveled against Rajapaksa have been widely reported and should be included in this article as long as they are written in a neutral tone and supported by reliable sources. A quick search in Google reveals that there are plenty of independent, reliable sources on war crimes, nepotism, corruption and electoral fraud.--obi2canibetalk contr 20:30, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Please read wp:BLP, these types of comments are not allowed.

You all wanted to hear from a complete neutral, which is what I am completely neutral. I live in Ireland and have no affiliation to either party or media of any kind. However when I watched a very eye-opening and shocking insights documentary into the events of those final bloody weeks of conflict in 2009, by the International very well respected broadcaster Channel 4, I was physically sick. It is very clear now that far from the lenses of television cameras and the print of news headlines that typify war reporting today, tens of thousands of civilians – perhaps as many as 40,000 innocent civilians many of who were in make shift hospitals at the time, were systematical raped, tortured, mutilated and just dumped without any level of respect. No reporters were allowed near the war zone, blocked by the Sri Lankan Government in an attempt to hide the death and destruction from the world. But in this era of mobile phones and digital technology, hiding the truth is difficult. This accurate documentary showed the footage of dead female Tamil's who appear to have been raped and murdered by against the Sri Lankan military. Viewers were also shown the shelling by Sri Lankan forces of crowded hospitals and civilian encampments in areas that the authorities ironically dubbed “no-fire zones”.

Mahinda Rajapaksa is responsible for all of this, he has broken multiple international humanitarian laws and must be tried for War Crimes. Hence you must add the section in Mahinda Rajapaksa's page about Nepotism and Alleged War Crimes as this is real and the UN are now looking at putting real pressure on his government to investigate and or Justice for the Tamil people. In the end any level headed person can see Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brother have no respect for there own people and multiple War crimes have been committed by him.... FACT !!!

The cable is classified as “CONFIDENTIAL” details biographic details on Sri Lanka’s fifth President Percy Mahendra Rajapakse. The cable was written on November 21, 20045 by the US Ambassador to Colombo Jeffrey J. Lunstead.

Under the subheading “JUST A COUNTRY LAWYER” Ambassador Lunstead wrote “ Percy Mahinda Rajapakse was born on November 18, 1945 in Verukatiya, Hambantota District, the third of SLFP founder-member D.A. Rajapakse’s eight children. (An older brother Chamal is also an SLFP MP, while two younger brothers, Godabhaya and Basil, had been living in the U.S. but returned to help with their brother’s campaign for the presidency.) He was educated at Richmond College in the southern district of Galle (where his father reportedly had to engage a Sinhala tutor to boost his son’s proficiency in his native tongue), as well as Nalanda College and Thurstan College in Colombo. He did not complete his Advanced Level (“A levels”) education, instead leaving his job as a clerk at the library at Sri Jayawarendapura University in the Colombo suburbs in 1970 to run for his late father’s seat representing his native Hambantota in Parliament. When he won at the age of 24, he became the youngest MP in Sri Lanka’s history to enter Parliament–a record that still stands. Taking advantage of a decision by the then-Justice Minister to allow MPs to enter law school–whether or not they had the necessary educational qualifications–Rajapakse graduated from Sri Lanka Law College in 1974.”

Criticism

The Tsunami funds scandal

Sri Lanka was hit by a devastating Tsunami on the 26th of December 2004.

On December 26, 2004 a devastating Tsunami hit Sri Lanka’s southern and Eastern Coastline. It rendered hundreds of thousands homeless and took the lives of 30,000 Sri Lankans. In the wake of that Tsunami Sri Lanka was to receive more goodwill and financial aid than it had ever done before. At that time Sri Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapakse was still Prime Minister. It would only be in the election of November 2005 that he would take over as President. Overwhelmed by the tragedy and moved by the plight of its victims money poured in from every corner of the world. The investigations found Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister was siphoning off Tsunami funds into a private account maintained in his father’s name.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and a handful of select officials have siphoned off a colossal Rs. 82 million of monies given to the Prime Minister’s Fund as tsunami relief and reconstruction, into a private account called ‘Helping Hambantota’ maintained at the Standard Chartered Bank in direct violation of Presidential directives. The actions of the Prime Ministerial team may also raise serious issues, which may border on offences under the Public Property Act, given that the four signatories to the account are private persons not connected to the Prime Minister’s office.

Signatories to the account The signatories to this account are Prof. Epasinghe, a long time friend of the Prime Minister, who does not work in the PM’s office but is paid a salary of Rs. 40,000 plus fuel expenses. Mahinda Gunawardena, another loyalist, Deputy Minister, Plantation Industries and brother of the Prime Minister, Chamal Rajapakse and Udaya Abeyratne of the Road Development Authority who is the chief accountant of the Prime Minister’s ‘Maga Neguma’ Project. The account named ‘Helping Hambantota’ maintained at the Rajagiriya branch of the Standard Chartered Bank bears A/C No. 01-1237322-01 and as at June 29, had an account balance of Rs. 103,094, 966 (over Rs. 103 million). The account is still receiving funds and recently a direct cash deposit of Rs. 54,200 was made. If there was one time in the history of Sri Lanka that prompted worldwide sympathy and good will towards the nation it was the days after the tsunami. Apart from government to government pledges, private companies, the Sri Lankan diaspora, NGOs and foreign missions literally sent sacks of money to the country to meet the urgent needs of the tsunami affected. Many of these donations made its way to Mahinda Rajapakse as prime minister of Sri Lanka. Certainly money was flowing in, and steadily. At the time no special accounts were in existence and the Prime Minister was in control in the absence of the President who was still in London. For a Prime Ministerial team to then arbitrarily decide with no official record of the fact except a verbal assurance by the PM’s Secretary, Lalith Weeratunga that a large chunk of these moneys was given especially for the reconstruction of Hambantota raises serious issues of public accountability and transparency. In any event all donations received by the Prime Minister or by the Prime Minister’s office were donations given to the country as a whole and not to Mahinda Rajapakse to nurse his own constituency for personal political gain to give a generous interpretation to what has taken place. The fact that the monies have not yet been used but kept in an account for future use – and this is admitted to by PM’s Secretary Weeratunga (see box) – makes the action even more heinous, considering the untold suffering that victims in temporary shelters are still going through. Transactions The Sunday Leader learns that since the commencement of the ‘Helping Hambantota’ account, 14 outgoing transactions, each of which was less than a million, have been made totaling a sum of Rs. 9 million. This means the account had over Rs. 112 million. That is Rs. 30 million more than what was initially deposited from the Prime Minister’s ‘Punarjeewana’ fund. However Prime Minister’s Secretary, Lalith Weeratunga says no money has been deposited to this account after the initial Rs. 82 million and no account movements have occurred. Remember, President Kumaratunga was in England when the tsunami struck and it was the Prime Minister who took over disaster management efforts. Indeed, during those heady post-tsunami days and after her hasty return to the country, President Kumaratunga was to scoff at Rajapakse’s inefficiency publicly and berate his one-man-show attempt privately. Be that as it may, from December 26 onwards, monies received by the Prime Minister personally or by the Prime Minister’s office were deposited in the government account called ‘Secretary to the Prime Minister’ as there was no other account available in the immediate aftermath of the disaster. It is pertinent to note however that following the calamity there was no record to show the amount of money donated and the amount deposited. Simply put, due to various reasons – most of which were logistical – there was zero accountability. Sources at the Prime Minister’s office confirm that monies handed over in the presence of other officials at the office were however documented. President’s directive On her return from London, President Kumaratunga was quick to notify all ministries concerned that monies received for tsunami relief should be deposited into one account. Therefore, on December 29, 2004 by Presidential Secretariat Circular No. PA/272, President’s Secretary, W.J.S. Karunaratne sent out a directive to all secretaries of ministries and heads of institutions not scheduled under ministries.

Edit proof?

Why is possible to edit this article? This man is no different than Chairman Mao, Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, Assad of Syria, Pol Pot, Fidel Castro and a dozen other despots we've seen over the last century. Surely the biography should be expanded to include his policies of ethnic cleansing, genocide and crimes against humanity, rather than a diluted mention of "Allegations of War Crimes." He runs the nation very much like Saddam Hussein ran his, using family in important positions and crushing political opponents with instant imprisonment (or worse) for challenging his power. He threw UN observers out of the country virtually under threat of murder before the final erasure of the Tamil. The sources are the ones already cited, which include face-to-face interviews with the very same UN staff forced to flee to save their own skin. The toothlessness of the UN leadership also needs exposure. All they seem able to do is call "foul" and then run away, when they should be filing charges at the Hague at an absolute minimum. The "silence" of this "Wiki aricle" is deafening. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.62.254.20 (talk) 07:23, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Everything against him are nothing but allegations - there is no undeniable proof of any of the allegations made - everything is uncorroborated. So they remain allegations. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.247.49.171 (talk) 16:19, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

WikiLeaks made public secret US cables (Contents of the United States diplomatic cables leak (Sri Lanka)) from 2009–10, stating that American diplomats including Patricia Butenis believed that Mahinda Rajapaksa was responsible for targeting Tamil civilians (who were held as human shields by the LTTE) resulting in their alleged deaths and of captured LTTE fighters at the end of the war with the LTTE. The cable also states that (as in any war, where the responsibility for casualties rests with the supreme commander of the war effort), responsibility for many of the alleged crimes rests with the country's senior civilian and military leadership, including President Rajapaksa, his brothers and General Fonseka.[9]

Coup d'état

There is no evidence that Rajapakse try Coup d'état. He,Military spokesman,Army Commander and Police also reject that. Rajapaksa decided to concede defeat and summoned Ranil Wickremesinghe to assure him of a smooth transition of power.Mention that also. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Randeepa (talkcontribs) 14:23, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

There is every evidence that Rajapakse attempted to remain in power. What were the Army Chief, Police Chief, Chief Justice, etc. doing in Temple Trees (this was his official residence) in wee hours of 09th January? They shouldn't be present in that place in an election night! Can anyone think a tyrant in the nature of Rajapakse will give up power easily? The entire state machinery and some of the private sector bodies were forced/compelled to do campaigning for him. Billions of rupees were spent on his campaign (of course not his money). The "Poya", one of the religious days of Buddhists in Sri Lanka (usually one per month) was used to influence voters (white cloths with his messages were distributed to poor devotees). His campaign went down to such a low ebb. The opposition was pulverised and quelled. Eventually, "democracy" won.

Can a rational person could surmise that there was a smooth transition of power. In my opinion, the real hero who safeguarded the will of the majority is none other than the Election Commissioner of Sri Lanka (Mr. Deshapriya).

It will take a decade for the new government to investigate the atrocities committed by him, his family, and his cohorts. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.247.205.123 (talk) 05:21, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

Infobox officeholder

I rearranged the terms per Template:Infobox_officeholder/example#Multiple_terms (Infobox officeholder is the template which is currently implemented) where it explicitly says "Place the most recent terms at the top". I would like to know if there is another guideline which contradicts this, as Blackknight12 reverted my edit claiming electorates are always mentioned at the bottom of the list. I'm not currently aware of a guideline/policy which mandates such thing. And what exactly do you mean by electorates should be at the bottom? From what I know electorates are the people who vote in an election. Please elaborate. I hope we could reach a consensus here rather than editwarring in article space. Best, -- Chamith (talk) 06:46, 5 September 2015 (UTC)

And also, please explain why you reverted both my edits, including this one, where I removed a duplicated ref. I'm starting to get a feeling that this was a hasty undoing. Thank you for your clarification in advance. -- Chamith (talk) 06:52, 5 September 2015 (UTC)

The infobox as it is currently is very messy, random and way too long. Only the most important offices that the person has held should be in the infobox. This excludes party political offices as it is not comparable to a cabinet or diplomatic post. When an office is held multiple times, they should be grouped together, where the most recent term is at the top. Rajapaksa has been elected to parliament three times, at different periods in his life, but they are the same office, member of the parliament. Parliamentary seats in an infobox are always last on the list as it is relatively unimportant, and is standard throughout wikipedia.--Blackknight12 (talk) 08:07, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
That sounds quite reasonable. And given that there are no firm rules on Wikipedia, I think we should just move forward with your version, as what you mentioned above is true. I agree that the infobox is bloated with mediocre term entries. And I suppose most people would be looking for information about his presidency. I'll restore back your version while retaining this edit. Cheers. -- Chamith (talk) 12:07, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for your discussion. I'm glad we could work this out. --Blackknight12 (talk) 12:48, 5 September 2015 (UTC)

Accountability of the page???

Most of the reference used for this page is not politically balanced sources. Some of these facts are not proved and they are just statements of other politicians or media which is not balanced. Some wikipedians edit this page based on just media article which is not balanced. Remember this is not a place to display your ideas. For example Helping Hambathota part does not have even citation or credible reference. This could be harm to quality of wikipedia too. Not satisfied about moderateness of this page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Randeepa (talkcontribs) 15:34, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

Sri lanka have now two prime minister see[13] please change "Prime Minister of Sri Lanka" to "Prime Minister of Sri Lanka (Disputed with Ranil Wickremesinghe )" 112.134.45.10 (talk) 03:43, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Not done: the source says that the have two prime ministers as a figure of speech. No law has been passed, or anything else, to suggest that there are now 2 official prime ministers. The situation is still contested, as seen in the source. DannyS712 (talk) 04:33, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Speaker's statement on NCM

On the 14th November 2018, Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament released a statement highlighting that the No-Confidence Motion (NCM) against Mahinda Rajapaksha was passed under accepted norms. Doesn't this mean that Mahinda Rajapaksha is no longer the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka? (Since President has no power to reject a passed NCM according to the constitution). The article should stop referring to Mahinda Rajapaksha as the the PM IMO. CoolGin (talk) 18:39, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

He is the mega thief who disappeared the dolor storage of government. He should be investigated and audited internationally. He is most rejected person of sri lankans. But still he don't like to resigned from prime minister position even all Sri lanksns forcing and making revolution to eliminate the Rajapaksha family. He is the main thief of rajapaksha family called as Nãki Mainã. Next one is Basil Rajapaksha called as Kaputã, next one is Gotabhaya Rajapaksha, next onr is Chamal Rajapaksha, Next one is Sashindra Rajapaksha. His son's Namal Rajapaksha who is having so many lands and business started without any proper earning , Yoshitha Rajapaksha is a navi officer who also same as Namal. Next one Rohitha Rajapaksha is bit different look, but same DNA of father because he is also eating without having proper job. So all of them are eating by robed money of sri lankans. 2402:D000:A400:83F8:ECDF:F66D:7ECB:28C3 (talk) 11:31, 6 May 2022 (UTC)

Lead section has multiple issues including grammar

Change the section in the lead "During Rajapaksa's political career, he has been accused of being a war criminal and criminal. In the last years of the Sri Lankan civil war, there were human rights violations which were committed under Mahinda Rajapaksa’s presidency. He has rejected the United Nations' investigation into the war crimes committed. He has been accused of being a criminal several times, most recently for insisting violent on anti-government protestors on 9 May 2022"

into
