Dec's surname is Lonsdale, according to Radio Times and the programme's end credits. Can someone please add it? 77.97.55.147 (talk) 11:55, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 15:32, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
For some reason the Radio Times episode guides, which feature a cast list of characters featuring in the episode, are only displaying reduced lists even for episodes that Dec is appearing in. They don't mention his name or even half of the characters that will be appearing in the episodes. His surname is definitely Lonsdale though.77.97.55.147 (talk) 15:28, 20 May 2018 (UTC)
I found this page on Corriepedia about the character. [2] This clearly states his surname. Is this proof enough?77.97.55.147 (talk) 17:33, 20 May 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for that. It's funny because he didn't actually appear in that episode and is in the cast list yet he doesn't appear in the cast lists for episodes he appears in. Strange that. Radio Times clearly need to get their act together. Thanks again for the source.77.97.55.147 (talk) 20:26, 21 May 2018 (UTC)

Once an actor has completed compulsory schooling, which is the end of Year 11 (last Friday in June) or until they turn 16 after that date, there is no longer restrictions on a child's work hours, no need for licensing etc. though Tanisha may have chosen to pursue voluntary (further) education, which is taken into consideration where as the likes of Zennon and Elle Mulvaney still have a year of compulsory schooling and will be considered regular once they have finished Year 11 next year. Surnames used in this list

There is an issue of which character surnames are to be used in this list. Rita Tanner was known as Rita Sullivan for longer and may have had more notable stories under that or even a previous surname. The issue here is that character names do not match their article titles which may have adhere to WP:COMMONNAME. An editor suggested this, but was outright reverted. I changed this and the same has happened. To avoid this becoming an issue I felt a discussion is needed. I believe they may as well match the article title. Why confuse the general reader with so many different name variants. A fan will know their name regardless.Rain the 1 21:54, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

Agree 100%. ThisIsDanny (talk) 22:16, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict) I definitely think WP:COMMONNAME should be applied to this list, and the names should match the article names. - JuneGloom07 Talk 22:36, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
I personally think that it is outrageous to suggest that any name, other than the one that they are currently being credited with on the show, should be even considered for the "current characters" list. As I have said numerous times, there is no current character called Rita Sullivan although there is a current character called Rita Tanner. While I completely understand why the actual articles should use the common names (as that is all WP:COMMONNAME talks about, the article names not subsequent pages like this) this is a page which is current and ever changing to fit the current credits to the show. Also, the edit you made was even more ludicrous than usual - as you only changed half of the character's names to their article names and left the other half with the current names. Obviously you two have been here much longer, and seem to have a much more aggressive approach, so no doubt my own opinion will be overruled. Connorguy99 (talk) 01:23, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
"A fan will know the name regardless" - I think this is a preposterous statement. Only true fans will know of characters by their old names, many people read the credits and then want to know more about a certain character so they come to this page expecting to find information lining up with what is currently being offered at the end of each episode. However, with your proposition that all the names are changed to those that only "true fans" will understand - it becomes far too confusing for the regular fan and casual viewer. Connorguy99 (talk) 01:26, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for taking the time to reply. It is much better to discuss on here. These articles are not for fans and viewers alone. I suggested what may be best for the general reader. I believe all names should be kept in line with article titles. I pointed out that WP:COMMONNAME offers the sound advice stating "use commonly recognisable names". While it is not a requirement away from article titles, I do not see any harm in keeping with that advice. In addition we write about fiction from the real world perspective. So a character will be known to the public and media alike by a name. This will take into account the body of work as a whole. Some of these characters, such as Rita have been onscreen for decades. A discussion can be created on the article's talk page to determine her common name. Your suggestion that it becomes far too confusing for those arriving on Wikipedia having read the character's name in the end credits scene has a flip-side. These articles from 2017 all refer to Rita as Rita Sullivan [5][6][7] - Would that be too confusing if they were to arrive on this list having read one of those articles. Probably not. What could be confusing is never having consistency on this list, other lists and the articles themselves. I think calling us aggressive and overruling is a little unfair. We embrace change and want more editors to take part.Rain the 1 02:04, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
I think having a current character list without the actual character's current titles is far too confusing for a lot of people, and actually makes it not a current character list at all but a list of nostalgia. Connorguy99 (talk) 02:42, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

I agree with Connorguy... this list should reflect the name currently used. The piping function is for the very reason it is used. Also, WP is for the casual user, not the super fan — that is what Corriepidea would be for.--Jordan 1972 (talk) 01:50, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

Changing names of fictional characters was not the reason why pipe linking was introduced. I strongly agree with you that Wikipedia is not for the super fan. I said a fan will know regardless. They hold no weight here.Rain the 1 02:18, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
Since this discussion has cropped up again, I'm going to add my thoughts. I agree with Raintheone and believe that WP:COMMONNAME should be used here. Soaper1234 - talk 17:21, 24 October 2018 (UTC)
COMMONNAME should definitely be used imo, far more confusing to change the name every time a character marries/divorces, the most common names are easily identified. ThisIsDanny (talk) 17:27, 24 October 2018 (UTC)
This is the CURRENT character list, the names used in the credits are the CURRENT character names. Those are the names that should be used. Names shouldn't just be changed as soon as a character marries, but should be when the names are changed in the credits. WP:COMMONNAME is in regards to the actual pages, not for current character pages. Connorguy99 (talk) 19:20, 24 October 2018 (UTC)

Mike Thornberry

Should Mike really be considered "returning"? His last scene was on June 29th, and his return was announced less than two months later - therefore the character is still within the six (or is it still a year on the Corrie pages) month rule. Connorguy99 (talk) 12:56, 13 September 2018 (UTC)

The six month/one year rule doesn't apply to any pages outside the EastEnders WikiProject, so yeah I'd say Mike is considered returning. There should be about five months between his last appearance and his next. Soaper1234 - talk 16:35, 13 September 2018 (UTC)

The age children become regulars

I suppose this discussion could also apply to Emmerdale and maybe at a push, the others like EastEnders. I know in the past that children were upgraded to regulars upon completing Year 11, but I'm actually now thinking it should be pushed back to when they've finished what would be Year 13 at 18.

Recent children moved up to regular include Ellie Leach (Faye Windass), Alex Bain (Simon Barlow) and Tanisha Gorey (Asha Alahan), however, I looked at wikias on the shows at character counts that are logged and their appearances of late seem not much drastically more, if at all, than when they were younger compared to the adults - the same applies to some of the Emmerdale kids like Isobel Steele (Liv Flaherty), Rosie Bentham (Gabby Thomas), Jack Downham (Noah Dingle) etc.

I think one factor could be budgets, but putting that aside, there are fairly new rules about young people staying in education until 18, so I think it's highly likely that they stay right through to the end of what would be Year 13. I know from what I read from BBC's own child performer's guidance that although young people don't need licenses and some other laws, considerations are made for them continuing education and I think ITV would follow suit on that. Grangehilllover (talk) 21:44, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

For EastEnders, we mark characters are regular when the actor turns 16 as this is the school leaving age. However, the law in England since 2015 is that 16- and 17-year-olds must stay in full-time education, start an apprenticeship or traineeship, or spend 20 hours or more a week working or volunteering while in part-time education or training. I don't know how that affects young actors. — ᴀnemoneᴘroᴊecтors 15:29, 30 November 2018 (UTC)
I think it should be as soon as they turn 16, still at school or not. 18 is ridiculous. Connorguy99 (talk) 22:34, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
Most likely in my opinion, actors turning 16 would be employed full-time as long as they do some part-time training or education until they are 18, thus making them regulars from age 16. It has to be based on the law, not on what you think is "ridiculous". — ᴀnemoneᴘroᴊecтors 23:18, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
Well, to be accurate, for the purposes of WP, it has to be based on “Reliable Sources”, not an editors opinion or their reading of “the law”. Jordan 1972 (talk) 15:13, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
It is all on this page; Legal working age. Once they are 16+ they should be considered regulars, 18+ is for licensed premises that primarily sells alcohol. This is proven by the fact that not long after Amy's actress turned 16 it was announced that she would be given her first major storyline, in this case a pregnancy. Connorguy99 (talk) 17:35, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
Firstly, I just want to say that I just felt the subject of this needed a bit of an updated discussion, like most things now and then. @Connorguy99: Elle's still in Year 11, still under license and still requires chaperoning until June 2019. A teenage pregnancy does not mean anything: Ellie Leach had one when she was 14. @AnemoneProjectors: young actors are affected as noted on BBC's guidance. Grangehilllover (talk) 08:53, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
@Connorguy99: That's legal working age, not school leaving age. The law says what I already said. @Grangehilllover: Thanks, it's a fairly long document and I couldn't find if there's a part relating to 16 and 17 year olds. See gov.uk. — anemoneprojectors 09:27, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
@AnemoneProjectors: Bits relating to 16 & 17 year olds (Year 12 and 13) "...While there will be no new legal duties on the employers of young people in relation to RPA (unlike for under 16s) there may be considerations for production teams working with children who are continuing their training or education." (page 4 in guidance). Young people in soap today are very different to young people in soap from those in the 80s, 90s...10 years ago. Grangehilllover (talk) 12:34, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
@Grangehilllover: Ok so do you still think we should wait for actors to turn 18 before we change them to regular? And apply it to all the British soaps? I did notice that EastEnders started employing 18-year-old actors to play 15-year-old characters, such as Charlie Winter playing Hunter Owen, whereas in the past they might have found a 16-year-old actor to take on that role. — anemoneprojectors 12:39, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
I would say that. I hope this is not inconvienient, but it's just with all recent changes, I wasn't sure of when it was last discussed and like you said, getting older actors of 18 and above to play like 14 and 15 (other examples: Tilly Keeper (18) to play Louise Mitchell (14), Lucy Fallon (19) to play Bethany Platt (14), Clair Norris (19) to play Bernadette (15)). The last 16/17 year old I can think of taking on a role playing a character maybe 1 or 2 years younger is Shona McGarty way back in 2008 at 16/17 taking on the highly controversial child grooming plot as Wji. Brooke Vincent and Sacha Parkinson's relationship story in Coronation Street didn't start until they were 18 in 2010 and I'm not exactly clued up on Emmerdale pre-2016. Grangehilllover (talk) 13:31, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
Yet Danny Walters is 25 but playing a 19 year old, it is purely the best actor for the job. 16+ should be the age that actors as considered regulars, as I've pointed out Amy Barlow's first major storyline was announced just after she turned 16. Connorguy99 (talk) 13:55, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
@Connorguy99: Elle is in Year 11, so has to be licensed, has a chaperone, has work regulations until next June. And like I said, Ellie Leach had a teen pregnancy storykibe in 2015 when she was 13/14. And it's nothing to do with how big a storyline is: it's appearances and recent law changes are bound to impact on that. Even at 16 and 17, employment outside the entertainment industry is restricted. Grangehilllover (talk) 14:17, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
@Grangehilllover: I don't watch Corrie anymore so I'm unfamiliar with the storylines now, but in EE, Maisie Smith is 17 playing 15-year-old Tiffany Butcher and she has a major storyline going on. She returned at the beginning of this year, and has been in over 80 episodes, more than many of the adult cast members. To compare, the most appearances by an actor under 16 this year is Bleu Landau, in about 40 episodes. — anemoneprojectors 15:10, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
@AnemoneProjectors: This is another grey area for 16 and 17 year olds. I know Maisie is literally front and centre at the moment in EastEnders, but in the 2 Northern soaps I watch (Corrie and ED), the young characters of the same age of Maisie's age bracket rarely feature. Next year in EastEnders, the boy who plays Riley Taylor will have completed Year 11 and he might be totally different to Maisie in the number his appearances (his learning difficulties may play a part in that). I think like the Year 11 kids and below at school, it depends how they are doing at school and college (because they have to give consent to release 16 and 17 year olds for work)...unless on the "List of [show name] characters", we could devise a new table? Semi-regular characters? But keep it as Present; regular? Grangehilllover (talk) 15:47, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
@Grangehilllover: I seem to remember years and years ago over at the list of EastEnders characters, there was a separate table for children and teenagers, but it got merged with the recurring characters because that's essentially what they were. I'm not sure I'd want to see that return, but maybe it's more of a grey area now than it once was. I didn't realise Tom Jacobs was 16 and will be able to leave school in June 2019. I guess we'll have to wait and see as you never know. But it'll take a while for it to filter down from writing a script to filming to broadcast... — anemoneprojectors 16:04, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
Seven year old Isabelle Flanagan has appeared 56 times this year on Coronation Street (as Hope Stape) and Macy Alabi has appeared 51 times (as Ruby Dobbs). Connorguy99 (talk) 17:39, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
@Connorguy99: Flanagan and Alabi are kind of irrelevant to this discussion. They're like 7 and 6 and are small children (literally babies) at primary school. 18:21, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

Norris Cole

Norris essentially departed the show in 2017 due to the ill health of Malcolm Hebden. It's been confirmed that his upcoming appearance is only a cameo. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:23C5:6D87:3500:AD13:65D3:B5F8:E9C7 (talk) 17:01, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

@2.96.186.200: Page created - List of Coronation Street characters (2019) -- Jordan 1972 (talk) 16:23, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
The page has no substantial content, no sources and is not in the format of a list of characters (year). Soaper1234 - talk 17:31, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
@Jordan 1972: I think you should have created the article in your userspace or as a draft first, so that it wasn't just left as an unsourced list of names. You, and those who wanted the page, should thank Soaper1234 for improving it and saving it from being deleted. - JuneGloom07 Talk 23:33, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
Thanks -- I don't need the lecture on how to work in WP... also, it was "saved" from being deleted after he/she was the one who nominated it for deletion. The fact the speedy deletion was denied and it was significantly updated within hours shows that it was appropriate to create the article even in its imperfect form. It was requested by two other users, one of who couldn't have created it and the other who expressed specific unease about creating it; we are 3.5 months into the year already and there is a list article for every other year since the show started. Perhaps if the list had been allow to exist in its form, one of the two people who requested it (which is why I pinged them), would have made the improvements that Soaper1234 did in a reasonable amount of time, and without some of the drama and finger-wagging that happened. In the end, the article is there and we can all move forward. -- Jordan 1972 (talk) 17:12, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
Thank you JuneGloom07. You cannot rely on other user's movements Jordan 1972 and the article should not be created without any real prose and expansion. It doesn't matter how far into the year we are; if there isn't enough information etc., an article shouldn't be created. I had already been working on some sort of an article, hence why I could expand the article fast, but that was never guaranteed. Anyway, like you say, let's leave it there now. Unexplained removal of regular characters

Why are certain regular characters being moved to recurring? Vicky, Natalie and Jan have all been confirmed to be regular - Vicky's actress Kerri Quinn is still filming regularly (a fan photo was even taken with her outside the studio only this week) and is presumably going to become involved with Robert, and both Natalie / Jan's long-running storylines have been confirmed. Jan will be in tonight's episode (Friday 19th April), all six of both next week and the week after - and that is before the human trafficking storyline really gets going. Connorguy99 (talk) 13:39, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

I moved these characters based on what I believed they were. I was under the impression they were all recurring characters, but I may be wrong. Vicky stopped appearing after Amy's pregnancy story, but has now returned for another story. I'm not sure this quite indicates her status as a regular cast member? Natalie appears to just be part of the David/Nick story and not a regular character, rather just here for the story, but again, I may be wrong. With Jan, I'm torn as he seems to be Eileen's new love interest and is involved in the new slavery story, but we've had no announcement/casting details from him, uncommon from the show. Overall, to me, Jan is the only one I could consider a new regular. Soaper1234 - talk 13:51, 19 April 2019 (UTC)
@JuneGloom07, ThisIsDanny, Jordan 1972, and Gardenshed95: Just going to ping some other editors to get more opinion. Soaper1234 - talk 13:51, 19 April 2019 (UTC)
The majority of those editors have a history of agreeing with you... despite being faced with facts. Connorguy99 (talk) 14:27, 19 April 2019 (UTC)
Jan is undeniably a regular, and it has been announced that he will actually move onto the street in upcoming episodes, also Natalie now works on the street as part of the new barber shop and it has been announced that she will begin to grow close to David (which causes problems for him and Shona) this shows that she is being given storylines beyond just the Nick/David money scandal. And as I have explained Vicky's actress is still known to be regularly filming for the show. Connorguy99 (talk) 14:31, 19 April 2019 (UTC)
Sorry, I just pinged editors who have recently edited Coronation Street articles. Feel free to ping some other users too. Soaper1234 - talk 15:20, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

I think until it’s confirmed by the show they are regulars they should remain as recurring characters Gardenshed95 (talk) 15:36, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

A lot of mystifying behaviour regularly occurs on these soap articles. There are EastEnders characters who have been around for 4/5 years and involved in heavy story who still don't have their own character pages whilst a relative newcomer like Callum Highway does.

The quads

Might be a bit pedantic, but do we know for certain that they have the surname Brown? As their parents aren't married, they could have their mother's surname, or even a combination of both..... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 10:27, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

No sign of Diana Bailey being introduced at all in 2019 (or beyond). I think that this character should be removed from the future characters section, and the list of 2019 characters page until it is officially confirmed when she will be making her appearance. There isn't even any casting news. Connorguy99 (talk) 14:46, 11 December 2019 (UTC)

As nobody else had anything to add I am removing the character from the "future" section. No casting news or arrival date, just an off-handed comment that they intended to introduce the character at some point. Connorguy99 (talk) 20:17, 28 January 2020 (UTC)

Sophie Webster

Never once did Brooke Vincent reveal an immediate intention to return after her maternity leave - in fact messages from her colleagues suggest that she wont be returning, with Sally Dyenvor commenting that she is "welcome back any time". This is opposed to someone like Julia Goulding who expressed right from the start that she was returning after maternity leave. Also, Brooke Vincent's contract expired this month. It is a situation similar to Helen Flanagan's exit in 2018, we simply assumed that she would return after her maternity leave - she never did. Therefore I have removed Sophie due to Brooke's contract having ended, and the fact that we've never had solid confirmation that she is returning. Connorguy99 (talk) 12:18, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/11098054/coronation-street-brooke-vincent-return-contract-maternity/
In this source from the Sun (which I understand is no longer considered a valid source on this site, but there are several other sources confirming it) it is made very clear that Brooke Vincent is not returning to the show anytime soon.
"CORONATION Street bosses have given star Brooke Vincent “as long as she needs” to DECIDE whether or not she returns to the famous cobbles."
"Her 12 month running contract for the show will expire in May."
"Bosses have told her she can return to the soap whenever she wants - although she’s yet to give any indication of a return date."
"Sources say an improved deal will be on the table IF she decides to return to her role as Sophie Webster."
“The door has been left open for her at any point in the future, whenever that might be.”
All of this goes to show that she has left the show and has no current intention to return and therefore, as she is no longer under contract, she is not a current character. This is the exact same situation as Helen Flanagan, who was never confirmed to have left permanently. Connorguy99 (talk) 14:50, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

There is this recent article from Digital Spy that quotes a spokesperson saying that I is not leaving the show, just that it won't be immediately like Goulding, so she will eventually return, unlike Flanagan.

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/coronation-street/a31228916/coronation-street-brooke-vincent-future-contract/

Also, the Corona virus shutdown may also be a factor. Someone needs to contact ITV or Corrie with the question as to her Status on the Street. Anyhow, I just found this article and wanted to share. In my opinion, there has to be some sort of consensus when it comes to situations like this where the status is murky, if you know what I mean. 160.32.214.75 (talk) 23:18, 9 May 2020 (UTC) samusek2

In other words the EXACT same wording for Kym Marsh's exit? As said in the Sun article the show bosses are desperate to keep her, but her contract has ended and she has no plans to return at any time in the near future - so why would she still be on the current character list? Connorguy99 (talk) 00:35, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
Just to add, I think it is worth remembering that The Sun is considered an unreliable source (see WP:THESUN). Soaper1234 - talk 10:23, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
Probably good that I added it in the first line then. Connorguy99 (talk) 12:17, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
The only site saying that her contract has expired is WP:THESUN. No other sources have explicitly said that, other than The Sun. So how do we know it has? Also, if a spokesperson has said she isn't leaving, then we assume she's not leaving. We don't have ANY grounds to say she's left the programme, especially given the circumstance of a pandemic. Remove her when we have a WP:RS saying she is not returning at all, otherwise it's all hearsay and assumption. – DarkGlow (talk) 15:05, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
Where has a spokesperson said she is not leaving? Literally that Digital Spy article has everything you need to know to confirm her departure. Digital Spy claimed that a spokesperson "denied that Vincent's contractual status means she is leaving the cobbles" but if you actually bother to read the comment you can see that nowhere is this stated and is completely made up by DS. In fact the spokesperson says "there is no pressure for her to RETURN" and "the door has been left open for her at any point in the future". Both of those comments confirm that she is currently no longer part of the show, and that latter comment is exactly the same thing said about Kym Marsh's permanent exit. Yes, Vicky’s return HAS been confirmed. Actress Kerri Quinn announced that she signed on to reprise her role in summer but, as a result of lockdown, her role has been delayed and it may be next year by the time she reappears. This is still a confirmed return, as she has been contracted - but it is just the dates that are unknown at the minute. Connorguy99 (talk) 07:31, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

People with his condition live for years, so he’s not confirmed to be departing anytime soon. Should we put every character in the departing section because nobody lives forever? Connorguy99 (talk) 07:29, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

Major changes to the page

So there’s been major changes to this page to make it similar to the list of EastEnders characters including; the addition of all previous actors to current roles and the removal of dates for upcoming arrivals / departures.

These changes are completely unnecessary - why should past actors be on a page about the CURRENT versions? And why have the dates been removed from cast changes?

The biggest annoyance is that these pages seem to have been done on a whim and not been discussed! Connorguy99 (talk) 23:52, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

I think regarding the latter, the dates being removed from the cast changes, is because due to the current situation, Coronavirus, the show is not sure exactly when these characters are going to appear/reappear/leave as a lot of the episodes and filming have been put back and certain storylines have been delayed so everything is up in the air as a result.81.99.69.50 (talk) 00:40, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
Not really - it has been announced that Debbie Webster will return in August, and Natasha Blakeman in September. It has been revealed that Liz has filmed her final scenes and so a general “2020” exit date should be in place too. Connorguy99 (talk) 07:26, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
If you want to put them back then you can make an edit request.81.99.69.50 (talk) 18:57, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
Let's discuss it then. Why don't you think previous actors shouldn't be listed? – DarkGlow (talk) 19:14, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

“Let’s discuss it then” - it should have been discussed before the change, and the user removing the change shouldn’t have been repeatedly labelled as vandalising.

There is no reason whatsoever for old actors to be listed on a current character page - these actors have NOTHING to do with the current versions (some only appeared as babies over fifty years ago!). Their inclusion only makes the page way longer and more complicated than it needs to be - if a user is interested in a specific character they will surely visit that page and find out all the information they need in regards to the older actors.

Just because the list of EastEnders characters does it doesn’t mean that we should. Connorguy99 (talk) 20:53, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

I don't really mind whether the previous actors are mentioned or not. I'm just happy to follow the rules of the page.81.99.69.50 (talk) 14:02, 6 August 2020 (UTC)
I believe past actors should be included. This is a list of current characters, not current actors, therefore all actors should be reflected. Soaper1234 - talk 18:35, 6 August 2020 (UTC)
I agree with Soaper1234. This page is predominantly focused on the characters, hence the title of the article. All past actors should be displayed. – DarkGlow (talk) 19:32, 6 August 2020 (UTC)
What have the past actors got to do with the current version of characters?
As I said some haven’t played their character in over fifty years - there is no reason whatsoever for them to be included, it makes the page extremely long and complicated for new readers (who will predominantly be looking for information about the current versions of characters) and just adds nothing of value.
Likewise, if all actors are added for whatever reason then the duration column would need to be split up for each of them. Which would just complicate the page further. Connorguy99 (talk) 04:49, 7 August 2020 (UTC)
This is turning from an actual discussion into a slanging match. Let's go back to the topic. Listing all prior actors do not make the article too lengthy, it's the bare minimum amount of information about portrayals that we could include, and lets readers know that an actor hasn't portrayed the character since the character's first appearance. For example, readers may assume that Chris Gascoyne has portrayed Peter since 1965, which obviously isn't true. – DarkGlow (talk) 09:46, 7 August 2020 (UTC)
Your argument is extremely flawed. You say “readers may assume that Chris Gascoyne has portrayed Peter since 1965” but your addition of the other actors does not include separate durations, so it gives no extra information as to how long each actor was in the role.
If a user wants to go into depth with an actual character they can simply go to that page - that’s what the pages are there for. It adds nothing of value to have actors, a lot of whom don’t even have their own pages, stuffed onto the page. It is complicated and unnecessary. Connorguy99 (talk) 09:57, 7 August 2020 (UTC)

Current Actor Footnote=

Does anyone else feel like a current actor footnote might be useful for the character list. For example to star (*) Chris Gascoignye years of Peter Barlows run, or similarly the Ben Price years of Nick Tilsey's run so characters can see in quick glance how long the characters have been portrayed by the current actor? 12:29, 3 September 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Snookerfootyfan (talkcontribs)

Page protection request

I request page protection because as I look through the recent edits, I see IP addresses etc vandalise the page. Even recently too. Could this be protected? WikiFlame50 (talk) 19:42, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

@WikiFlame50: The page has pending changes protection. I'm a reviewer, so I amongst other reviewers review all changes made to the page. If it's vandalised, the edit is not directly visible to the majority of Wikipedia readers, until it is reviewed (hence the name "pending"). The vandalism is not bad enough to increase protection. – DarkGlow (talk) 19:59, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

Characters moved to recurring

ITV has released a portrait to celebrate the show's 60th anniversary, featuring the seven longest-serving cast members and the seven newest regulars:

https://www.itv.com/coronationstreet/articles/new-60th-anniversary-cast-photo-revealed

At the bottom of the page, ITV's definition of a regular character is confirmed. As such as I've moved anyone who arrived after the 'oldest new' regulars (Michael and Aggie Bailey) and who is not in this portrait to the recurring section. Smurfmeister (talk) 15:13, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

@Smurfmeister: You seem to have removed both Ray and Kelly – and when you change a character's status on this article, you should also change it on their corresponding list article too. DarkGlow () 15:40, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

The article aligned with the picture stated that they only included characters who were on a twelve month contract when the picture was taken. Ray Crosby has been a regular character for the entire year (appearing more than half the cast), but was not included in the photograph because he is likely on his way out after the anniversary episodes and therefore no longer on a twelve month schedule. And Kelly Neelan has been slated for a "major" storyline in 2021.

Likewise, other regular characters have only been on six month contracts (like Emma Brooker when she first arrived) and they are later upgraded to longer contracts. This is presumably why the Coronation Street team specified what they were classing as regular, so that their definition didn't clash with other sites like this one.

I think downgrading Arthur and Laura is fair but removing Kelly and Ray is not. Connorguy99 (talk) 09:40, 21 November 2020 (UTC)

I actually agree on Ray; I'm guessing he might have been left out of the portrait because he's going at the end of his storyline (although I'm only speculating here). Personally I think Kelly would have been added to the picture was she a regular, but I don't want to argue back and forth on it. Smurfmeister (talk) 10:41, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
The actress who plays Kelly would have been on a six month contract when she returned at the start of the year - however, all this was affected by COVID. Since then, the actress returned to filming at the very end of October - presumably now on an updated contract - hence why she was ineligible to have appeared in the photograph as she wasn't on set / hadn't started her new contract. However, she has been confirmed to be involved in a major 2021 storyline. Connorguy99 (talk) 01:09, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Glory Bailey

This character has not appeared on-screen and therefore should not be listed anywhere on this page. They were mentioned to have been born last month but they are not a character in their own right until they appear on-screen. Connorguy99 (talk) 20:57, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Grid layout

What's with the strange grid layout pattern in the character list boxes in all the soap characters pages? It looks different from before and very strange with some lines more prominent and thicker than others. Was this done deliberately? Is there a new layout change or something?81.96.173.80 (talk) 16:31, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

It's visible on the character lists for all the soaps. Every few lines, one line seems thicker than the others and makes a grid-like pattern. Is this deliberate?81.96.173.80 (talk) 16:59, 28 May 2021 (UTC)
I don't see the point of it. It doesn't exactly enhance the page in any way.81.96.173.80 (talk) 17:34, 28 May 2021 (UTC)
Like I said on the Hollyoaks list, it's fine on my screens. – DarkGlow18:19, 28 May 2021 (UTC)
No issue with the look of the grids on my screen either. Jordan 1972 (talk) 19:36, 28 May 2021 (UTC)
On my screen every three or four lines in the grid is thicker than the others. It must just be my laptop screen then although it didn't look like that before this Thursday. Sorry for the inconvenience.81.96.173.80 (talk) 21:46, 28 May 2021 (UTC)

Phill Whittaker

Phill Whittaker should absolutely remain on the regular characters section. The actor confirmed on Twitter that he was a regular character [12] and somebody has taken a photo of him turning up to filming on the 5th of August [13] despite the fact that his last episode was 30th July thus meaning he is continuing to film. Connorguy99 (talk) 11:14, 3 September 2021 (UTC)

Glory Bailey

I have no idea why only the black child character has their name questioned, we have never had any official credits for many children (the quads, Harry Platt, etc) until they have been credited on-screen. Nevertheless, here is a link from May for the first child actor to portray the character with the name being "Glory Bailey"; [14] Connorguy99 (talk) 11:42, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

That is just a bias judgment. This has had nothing to do with race! Since the child wasn’t even credited, and no full name was said or seen onscreen, nobody was sure of what exactly it was. Do you really think it was kept that way because of a skin colour? For shame. WikiFlame50 (talk) 00:12, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

But now since a reliable source has been given. It’s solid. WikiFlame50 (talk) 00:12, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

2021 tenures

At some point, I'll be introducing "–present" to this article in the same way I did on the Hollyoaks and Emmerdale articles; this is to comply with MOS:DATETOPRES. However, it is always a discussion as to which is preferred for the 2021 tenures: "since 2021" or just "2021"; currently, both of the aforementioned articles use "since 2021" but I want to hear if there any counterarguments for this. DarkGlow11:08, 25 November 2021 (UTC)

Completely pointless addition and has already ruined the other pages you have linked. Connorguy99 (talk) 13:27, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
The "–present" isn't under discussion, it's adhering to an MOS. Do you have anything to add regarding 2021 tenures? – DarkGlow14:29, 25 November 2021 (UTC)

Previous actors

A discussion was had a while ago about the inclusion of previous actors being listed on this page, but no formal consensus was reached. I want to revisit this and put forward the idea of including previous actors, along with the inclusion of the tenure each actor had (see here for an example). Valid points were raised in the initial discussion and I think it would be beneficial for the article. What are people's thoughts on a layout similar to River City? Along with a references column to meet WP:V. – DarkGlow21:45, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

I 100% agree – the River City has the best format (other than the "–present", which I think is cluttering). I think 100% the other actors should be listed, and if possible the durations being for the actors that have played the character (e.g. Todd having 2 lines: actor 1 = 2001–2004, 2007, 2011, 2013–2017 and actor 2 = 2020–present) DaniloDaysOfOurLives (talk) 05:50, 12 February 2022 (UTC)
I do not believe this is a beneficial change to the list. While the example of Todd with two actors may not be that problematic, the characters of Peter and Amy have 7 actors who would need to be listed. And this same issue with significant list of actors would happen with many of the characters that start out as children. The list is about the current character and fundamental part of that current character is the current actor. The compromise is that the note function gives an indication the role has been played by other actors, and the specific information is available on the character’s page/section. I think adding in all the former actors would make the table too large and unmanageable without providing any meaningful value as to why someone would come to the page. If i want to know more about the character of Peter, I am not coming to a list page, I am going to his article. Jordan 1972 (talk) 13:43, 12 February 2022 (UTC)
@Jordan 1972: I don't think the size of the table would be an issue; every other soap character list includes previous actors and size isn't an issue, especially since it's a separate article just for the list. And as for the motives for coming to a character list, you can't assume that nobody is interested in the previous actors. Soap operas are notable for their recasts, so I disagree with your point, I think there is interest for it. – DarkGlow17:54, 12 February 2022 (UTC)
Additionally, for now, can the "actor" section be changed to "current actor" at least for clarity? DaniloDaysOfOurLives (talk) 17:57, 12 February 2022 (UTC)
@DaniloDaysOfOurLives: It already says that? – DarkGlow20:13, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
I would be against such a layout like River City. This is a page about the characters of Coronation Street, not the actors. Therefore, the durations should apply to the characters. I think we should include all the actors that have played the character to give a rounder picture of the character's entire tenure, but durations for each actor are not needed. That information can be found on the character page or would be ideal for a List of Coronation Street cast members page. Soaper1234 - talk 20:33, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
I'm fine with either layout – I suggested the River City layout due to a concern on the prior discussion about not knowing the tenure of each actor, but it's not a necessity for me at all, as I think a rowspanned duration works as well as the other. – DarkGlow21:17, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
This page is supposed to be a quick list to show information regarding the cast as it currently stands, why anyone would want to clutter the page with information regarding previous actors (most of which will likely be children with little known information about them) is beyond me. It's pointless to split lists of characters from a show into current and former. Eventually the show will finish and the merge will be needed. Right now the split doesn't add any value. • Oppose why is it "pointless", is this is your personal opinion? As a soap editor, it provides readers with a differentiation between current and former characters. Due to the size of the former list, a merge would put WP:UNDUE weight. – Meena10:59, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
  • Strong opppose – it is not pointless at all; it ensures that readers are aware between the difference between current and former characters. This is a very long running soap opera with a constantly changing cast (only one character remains from the first episode and 3 from the first decade whereas 5 new regular character debuted in 2023 alone). Also, both lists are huge (which is not surprising considering it has been airing for 63 years and has a huge cast due to currently airing 6 episodes a week) and would cause serious length issues (Meena (talk · contribs) has already worked hard with reorganising the list and removed characters that were unnotable). Also, sourcing can be added to the list easily and that can be worked over the next few weeks by myself and other editors. I disagree that updating the list means that there is a lot of work for editors – it is not, as we are constantly updating character pages etc and we also move characters when they debut, leave, return, are upgraded to regular or recast. Usually when a character leaves an experienced editor or IP moves the character to the former list the minute the episode airs. Both pages are quite big and merging them would cause the page to be too long and possibly tagged with a *too long* template, let alone it making it even harder to navigate. WP:Wikipedia is not paper – two pages (one of former and one for present) is not an issue at all and makes it easier to navigate. Also, that policy, along with Wikipedia:Article size, explains how it is important to not make pages too long and too big as it affects download times and creates other issues and suggests that long tables are split off into stand alone pages. The former and present character lists have been used for decades by the soap community through excessive consensus (as I have seen through looking at a lot of the revision history etc from years ago) and this has worked well for years and never caused an issue, so I am very surprised that it has been brought up now. Returning cast questions

I had a small question to ask about returning cast members who have returned after a short break. I seem to remember a few years ago, that there were editors who would readd people to the main lists if they had taken a small break of less than a year. Am I correct in assuming that is true. So would characters like Damon and/or Linda (and possibly Ryan if he does return sooner rather than later) can already be reintegrated into the main cast now or have the rules changed? Any help appreciated. Thanks! 135.0.252.54 (talk) 14:56, 28 December 2023 (UTC)

Ryan Connor returns

Ryan Connor has returned to the programme and is filming as we speak. Nolw Ryan Prescott left the show in December and will return by March. There was no official mention by the show or the actor that he had left the show, I seem to remember that there were a few well respected Wiki editors who have said that if an actor leaves the programme and returns under a year, in Ryan's case, approximatively 2 or 3 months, they can be reintegrated to the regular characters section. Ryan wasn't confirmed to be leaving permanently. There was no official sourced confirmation. This break was similar to a maternity leave or a panto break. So since this was a short break from the programme, I am reintegrating Ryan Connor back in the regular characters section. 135.0.252.54 (talk) 01:19, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

His initial run on the show was between December 2016 (he made his first appearance in the Christmas Day episode of that year) and October 2017. Can somebody please add Christopher Green to the character list? He made his first appearance in tonight's episode. Here are two sources which confirm this. [21] [22] 87.114.71.70 (talk) 20:34, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

It's been done now.91.125.24.214 (talk) 15:46, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

Why has Dee Dee Bailey's name suddenly turned orange on the list? Can somebody please turn the hyperlink back to it's correct colour and reopen it? 91.125.24.214 (talk) 22:28, 20 May 2024 (UTC)

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. Charliehdb (talk) 10:38, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
It has been changed back now so it doesn't matter anyway. No harm done.91.125.24.214 (talk) 14:32, 25 May 2024 (UTC)

Can someone please format Griff Reynolds' duration line properly? So it looks like the others? The – formula? Thank you. 91.125.24.214 (talk) 14:31, 25 May 2024 (UTC)

Can somebody please merge the source for Joel's parents in the character changes section upcoming characters box? The one that mentions him proposing to Dee Dee in the title? It has been posted twice. There is no need for duplication. 91.125.24.214 (talk) 13:37, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

Question: Could you show me the number of the duplicated citations? ABG (Talk/Report any mistakes here) 13:53, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
It's been done now but it was source number 6. The same source on the page twice.91.125.24.214 (talk) 21:58, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

Can somebody please remove Simon Barlow from this list? And from the cast changes section at the bottom of the page? He departed in tonight's episode onscreen. I have already added him to the past characters page. 91.125.24.214 (talk) 20:54, 3 June 2024 (UTC)

It's been done to the cast changes but he is still on the main present characters list.91.125.24.214 (talk) 12:00, 4 June 2024 (UTC)

Can somebody please add Joel's parents Gus and Anthea Deering to the list please? And also remove them from the cast changes section? They both appeared in tonight's episode. The actor that plays Gus is called Chris Garner. 91.125.24.214 (talk) 21:27, 5 June 2024 (UTC)

Here is a source backing up that this was their first onscreen appearances. [23]

Can somebody please format the duration lines for Dean Turnbull, Denny Foreman and Gus and Anthea Deering? So it looks like – and not - like the rest of the page? Thank you. 91.125.24.214 (talk) 22:24, 7 June 2024 (UTC)

It looks like all the other entries to me, so perhaps it has been fixed? If not please specify what is wrong. RudolfRed (talk) 00:20, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
On my computer screen the duration lines for those four characters are still appearing like this - and not – like the rest on the page.91.125.24.214 (talk) 07:21, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
Done per MOS:DATERANGE. Also did a search for any other misused hyphens but didn't find any, so that should be all for now. Liu1126 (talk) 13:46, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
Thanks. Much appreciated. I'll alert the mods if I see any more like that.91.125.24.214 (talk) 14:19, 8 June 2024 (UTC)

Martin Platt Return Rumours

I saw that ADavid has added Martin Platt to the Cast Changes section of this page, however, Martin \has not been confirmed to return as of yet. It is only just rumours. I know ADavid has added a Digital Spy article but all it is saying is that was rumoured in a Sun article and I remembered that there are users here who take off sources from the Sun newspaper. Can someone remove the mention of Martin in the Returning characters section until his return has been confirmed bya reputable and reliable source? Thanks! 135.0.252.54 (talk) 17:48, 29 June 2024 (UTC)

Per this [24] his return has now been fully confirmed DaniloDaysOfOurLives (talk) 12:45, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
