2008 Men's Olympic Gold medal with Argentina

We should add his trophy among his honors at Beijing Olympics in 2008. Arda Sorguç (talk) 01:13, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

I think you'll find it's a team trophy, not his trophy. In any event, source please. Britmax (talk) 13:28, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

quotebox goalposts

@Nampa DC: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/1026193534?diffmode=source

First the revert was because the quote was out of sync. When pointed out it wasn't, then it was about there being too many quoteboxes on the page. This kind of silly logic is tiring.

Cite violation of Wikipedia policies or quit incessantly reverting the quotebox with made-up reasons, please. Vilanova was probably more important to Messi's development than any of the current quoteboxes from folks who haven't even managed him.

2 cents from a newb editor: I think, a better strategy might be to see where the edits (in this case, you could have moved the quotebox to 'Early career' section) could fit instead of deleting them. Murtaza.aliakbar (talk) 22:41, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

His birth name is Lionel Andrés Messi but the name among family, friends, soccer in Spain and Argentina and the rest of the Spanish-speaking world is "Leo". Lionel is the formal, official name. Attached is the FC Barcelona file in his biography he is called "Leo Messi". He is also called this way by journalists and during the transmission of the matches.--SouthernP (talk) 10:21, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

Messi status

Lionel Messi is considered by the majority of footballers, coaches, pundits, journalists and of course fans as THE BEST player EVER. Not "one of the best" - nobody talks like this anymore. Here you have SOME of the examples:

In the past there was a debate "Messi or Maradona or Pele?" but now there is not such debate. There is a general agreement that Leo is the greatest of all time. Campió99 (talk) 23:03, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

i can quite easily list the same amount of sources declaring maradona, pele or c. ronaldo as the goat. FMSky (talk) 17:07, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
actually, FIFA officially labeled pele the greatest ever (https://web.archive.org/web/20210109195631/https://www.fifa.com/news/pele-the-greatest-them-all-1656982), so yeah, there's that. FMSky (talk) 17:17, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
Messi’s status is not cut and dried. Personally, he’s the most gifted player I’ve seen in 25 years watching the sport. His ball control is second to none. The second most naturally gifted would be Ronaldo (Brazilian) whose ball control only Messi surpassed while he had more moves in his locker than anyone. The third I would find it harder to determine. Cristiano Ronaldo is certainly the most driven player I’ve seen which, combined with his unmatched athleticism as well as his volume (and range) of goalscoring, would probably edge him over the more technically gifted Ronaldinho who downed tools halfway through his career. For natural talent it’s Messi followed by Ronaldo, for efficiency it’s Cristiano. Nampa DC (talk) 16:36, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
Sure and i agree with everything you said, but since it isnt completely clear, we should leave the sentence as "one of the greatest"--- FMSky (talk) 08:33, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

::::: I believe the 34 sources cited by Campió99 (talk) are in fact superabundant. Anyone resisting such evidence of Messi's status in the sport is clearly in utter denial. Cristiano Ronaldo has been largely out of the conversation (outside of his fanbase and affiliates) since 2016/2017, arguably longer going by polls alone, and there are other players of at least equal longevity (e.g. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Totti, Xavi, Modric) and similar athleticism (Adama Traore, Ibrahimovic (again), Ramos) who do not receive such accolades. I'd advise Nampa DC (talk) and FMSky (talk) to reflect on this study: https://www.givemesport.com/1711958-ronaldo-messi-pele-online-study-reveals-who-fans-consider-to-be-the-goat. Note that Messi does not even use the platform... Fateful apparition (talk) 12:47, 16 July 2021 (UTC) strike sock comment-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 16:15, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

disagree, and what you are doing right now is edit warring. it has been told numerous times that you should get a consunsus before changing the wording of the sentence that was been like this for a number of years- FMSky (talk) 13:12, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

FMSky are you even watch football matches? I mean regularly? And show me "the same amount of sources declaring maradona, pele or c. ronaldo as the goat." It will be very difficult to find them. You mentioned a discussion from 2018 - do you know that in football 3 years is a very, very long time, don't you? Since 2018 for example Cristiano's form has been decreasing, he's not at the same level anymore (but of course he has never been at Messi's level). And that Pele article? It's from 2012 and I consider it as a joke from you. Campió99 (talk) 12:42, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
completely irrelevant as we are talking best ever and not currently FMSky (talk) 12:58, 18 July 2021 (UTC)

"do you know that in football 3 years is a very, very long time, don't you?" Well, the Football League is over a century old, so no. Even the Premier League will be ten times that old next year. With every generation of footballer playing in a different environment, how would there ever be a GOAT anyway? Meaningless silver paper wrapped commercial concept for readers and clicks. Britmax (talk) 12:56, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
Britmax So? I gave you many examples of statements that Messi in someone's opinion is the greatest. I don't care if he REALLY is the GOAT because you know what? We cannot prove it. It is impossible to prove. But I just want (and I believe it is necessary) to add a note on Messi Wikipage that "he is often considered the best player ever" because it's TRUE. And there are no more players all over the world who are considered the best ever so often. Campió99 (talk) 17:25, 18 July 2021 (UTC)

Change of labels please

Hi, I would like to edit the team honours part which says Argentina u23 - Summer Olympics: 2008 to simply Argentina - Summer Olympics: 2008 Since the olympic tournament isn't only u-23 players, there are 3 players of unlimited age eligible to play, according to the olympics themselves in this article https://olympics.com/tokyo-2020/en/sports/football/. And since in other pages such as these https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Rom%C3%A1n_Riquelme https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay-Jay_Okocha#International_2 the honours section of their pages clearly label Summer Olympics as part of their senior national team achievements. In order to clear the confusion, I hope to make this change. Thank you Danny2547 (talk) 05:38, 7 August 2021 (UTC)

The Olympic teams are officially under-23 teams. We are well aware that three overage players are allowed, but by specifying that those players are exceptions, you prove the fact that those teams are predominantly under-23s. – PeeJay 12:54, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

Messi is signed to play as forward for PSG. He does not yet play for PSG yet. Your description that he plays as a forward for PSG is therefore inaccurate. The above quote should be rendered as follows:

Hey, I want to edit the Summer Olympics: 2008 in the International Honours Section from Argentina U23 to simply Argentina since I have now found evidence that Olympic games are indeed a SENIOR INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT. So a little bit of background story, Fifa posted this tweet about Pierre Andre Gignac scoring in the Olympics and declared it "his first goal at a senior international tournament", so by logic, football in the olympics are considered a SENIOR international title according to Fifa.

Tweet link: https://twitter.com/FIFAcom/status/1418144810003623936.

Thank you, hope my evidence from FIFA themselves is concrete enough. 1:35pm, 17/8/2021 Danny2547 (talk) 06:36, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
