SteamDB

[edit]

Hello, I was just wondering if SteamDB, a website that tracks tracks steam data, is considered a viable source, as one of my edits referencing player counts was removed. SteamDB pulls player count from ever steam game approximately every 5 minutes. The concurrent player count record was broken today, which SteamDB reported, and can be cross referenced by viewing the 24 highest hour player count which can be viewed on the steam website itself [1] as of December 2nd, 2023 TheBsati (talk) 05:14, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome to enquire at WT:VGRS as I don't think has been discussed yet. CaptainGalaxy 12:41, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
TheBsati, I have started a thread about the website at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games/Sources#SteamDB. — Davest3r08 >:) (talk) 20:57, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Steam Source

[edit]

A couple of contributions relating to citing the Lethal Company Steam page were removed, marking as Steam as an unreliable source. The Lethal Company Steam page is created and managed by the official game developer, who also self-published the game onto Steam. If there is a statement or quote from the official Steam page of the game, it should be seen as a reliable source. I do not see how it could not be seen as reliable.

Specifically, this is relating to "The developer plans to finish the game within 6 months" text under the "Development" section in the Wikipedia page that is marked with "Citation Needed". In the official Steam page for Lethal Company, there is an "Early Access Game, What the developers have to say" section. It contains questions that are answered by the official developer. One of the questions, "Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?", was answered by the developer, "I plan to finish it within 6 months. With that said, it will remain early access until I'm satisfied with it. This depends on players' reactions to it and how I feel about it myself."

If the developer themselves stated this answer, then is it not reliable? Reithegoat (talk) 18:28, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reithegoat, Steam is considered unreliable due to it being user generated. — Davest3r08 >:) (talk) 18:51, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So having user reviews on the steam store page is considered as having user generated content? Hashir13 (talk) 19:24, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hashir13, yes. — Davest3r08 >:) (talk) 20:07, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What the developer wrote on the store page may be considered primary source. I think this estimated release info has been picked up by articles, which you could cite. However, I think the estimate isn't particularly relevant as these are generally subject to change and prominently displayed on store page anyway (which could be an external link but virtually pointless given Steam's popularity). Steam Store

[edit]

The game is released exclusively on the steam store by the developer himself, how is it not a reliable source for information regarding the game release date over a news site that is getting their information from that store page itself. All the information regarding the development, current status and future plans of the game is also mentioned by the developer themselves on the store page (See "WHAT THE DEVELOPERS HAVE TO SAY:" section). @Hashir13:, see above IgelRM (talk) 05:41, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Major Cleanup Needed

[edit]

Someone has to clean up this article, there are multiple redundancies and things not based in fact on here, such as the creatures nicknames that only the community gave. We also do not need to talk about every single item nor for example say "including being chased by various monsters or fired on by auto-turrets" BroadcastPs4 (talk) 09:34, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The Thumper's nickname, Half, is canonical. On the official in-game bestiary, "Due to the fast and volatile evolution of this species, some theorize that Halves are one of the examples of an increased number of mutations causing higher levels of speciation in planets around the Thistle Nebula.'' This text is taken from citation 10. I believe the nickname for the Braken is also found in the bestiary in form of the title (something similar to "Braken- AKA the Flowerman") but I can't find a picture of its entry anywhere so that's only based on memory TheWikiToby (talk) 19:29, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I referred to citation number and not the actual source itself whoops
"Thumper - Lethal Company Guide" IGN
"Bracken - Lethal Company Guide" IGN TheWikiToby (talk) 23:25, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You're correct about the thumpers, they are referred in-game as halves and can be kept. Brackens on the other hand have no in-game nicknames as the 'Flowerman', only from the Autumn Update change-logs posted exclusively to Steam, which is not reliable as stated above. Adding a plot

[edit]

Is it possible to add a section for the plot of the game? While there is no real story for the game's present day, there are multiple entry logs scattered throughout the moons written by a character named Sigurd detailing his experience working at the Company. It gives some background on the universe of the game and possible origins and motivations to the Company itself. TheWikiToby (talk) 20:14, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Genre

[edit]

@Andrzejbanas: (Responding here from revert and talk page template pasting) The IGN review used below says "There’s nothing quite like a multiplayer survival-horror game". But besides, genre is subjective to some degree and as I noted co-op is not a genre. IgelRM (talk) 21:03, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Data recorders

[edit]

@TheWikiToby You left this comment on my talk page regarding data recorders you can find in the world:

This information does not fit the section because it is not vital information regarding the actual gameplay of the game

You're using "vital" as a weasal word. If I added something saying "You can walk forward", that is common/assumed knowledge and would not be vital information. But the logs are part of the game and provide more information about the world (for example, one of the logs mentions holding the radio near the company building to hear voices from inside). For a similar precedent look at the articles for Metroid Prime, games that have a similar feature (scanning the world around you to view information that may not be "vital", but is still relevant to the game and provides information on gameplay). hankster112 (talk) 14:28, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not familiar with the Metroid Prime games so I may get this wrong, but from what I've briefly read, the scanners majorly help the gameplay of the game. You can use them anywhere at anytime. They provide information and weak points on enemies that will help you progress the game easier. It's an important tool that will help anyone if they want to play the game. I heard they're also required at some point in the story, but I have no idea.
With the logs in Lethal Company, they don't provide any gameplay value at all. They're just simply lore. It's lore that not everyone who reads the article cares about. The logs are just some extra things you could find if you want to in obscure parts of the game. Also, I believe you can't actually hold up a walkie talkie to the Company building to hear noises. Even if it did, it wouldn't mean anything important to the actual gameplay of the game
Cheers! TheWikiToby (talk) 15:37, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The gameplay sections in the Prime articles include scanning as part of the gameply, even if what is being scanned does not directly help the player (such as log entries, corpses, geography, etc.) It is a part of gameplay, whether it provides the player with useful info or not. As of right now the game has little (if any) coherent story so a plot section like you suggested previously is not needed, however a single sentence on data recorders to let readers know that they exist should not be an issue. hankster112 (talk) 16:23, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Where are the mentions of the log entries, corpses, and geography in the Prime articles regarding the scanner? I've read the articles again trying to find this information. I can't find this information.
Cheers TheWikiToby (talk) 23:42, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I wrote the request for a plot section a while ago when I was a very new editor, we definitely don't need one. TheWikiToby (talk) 23:42, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ideally see if sources comment on the data recorders, but one sentence(?) probably doesn't make much difference anyway here. IgelRM (talk) 22:46, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Collaboration with Fortnite

[edit]

I have seen that there have been files and completed assets in Fortnite that reveal that Lethal Company is getting an official collaboration in the game. Should I add that information once it is officially revealed? Right now there are no *official* sources but many dataminers have shown the cosmetics are fully ready to go. SuperFoxReader (talk) 21:54, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@SuperFoxReader I don't think we should add this even when it's announced. Look at something like Doom Eternal. Doomguy has been added to Fortnite, yet it's not mentioned anywhere in the article, so the same should be applied here. TheWikiToby (talk) 00:50, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lethal Company Genre

[edit]

Anyone who has played the game knows that "survival horror" is not a very good descriptor of it's genre. I recommend also adding "comedy horror" to the list of genres. AndyIrate (talk) 12:40, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
