Regarding the "He is a fan of Hartlepool United" link. In a BBC radio 2 interview with Dermot O'Leary Ed Sheeran is asked about this statement. Ed explains (15:50 into the interview) that it was his "merchandise guy" who is a Hartlepool fan and had the Hartlepool shirt with 'Sheeran' on it and he simply posed with the shirt. He then states "I'm not a football fan at all" at 16:10 in the interview. Barnabyfry (talk) 18:01, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

[edit]I asked yeaterday for Wikipedia to remove the factually incorrect statement that 'The A Team' video cost only £20 to make. - Article talk pages are for discussing improvements to a given article, not for airing grievances; in this case your post contained a number of unsourced allegations which contradict Wikipedia's policy regarding biographies of living persons, which is why it was removed. As the £20 claim in the article was also unsourced, it was removed as well. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 14:27, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

Please can a citation on Ed Sheeran's Wikipedia page be edited as it is potentially driving customers to our competitors (National Youth Music Theatre) through our efforts promoting Ed Sheeran as Youth Music Theatre UK's patron and then for people to be able to go onto Ed's page on Wikipedia and read that he went to our competitors youth theatre - but he didn't he went to Youth Music Theatre UK. There is even a link on his page through to our competitors. Ed Sheeran starred in Youth Music Theatre UK's production of Frankenstein in 2007. He became our patron at the end of last year. He also helped promote our auditions tour this year, please find a YouTube clip with Ed talking about Youth Music Theatre UK and his experience when he was at Youth Music Theatre UK (YMT).

Ed never went to the National Youth Music Theatre. Having this stated on his Wikipedia page is enabling them to increase their profile even though Ed never went there. Also, the following points can be added to the Philanthropy section.
•Ed has recorded a version of Bob Dylan's protest song 'Masters of War' for the agit8 campaign. Agit8 is a campaign from one.org and includes artists from all around the world recording their favourite protest songs in order to build pressure for action against extreme poverty in the lead up to the G8 summit.

•Ed Sheeran announced on 30 March, 2013 that he will be releasing his own Martin signature guitar and all his proceedings will go to East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH: http://www.each.org.uk/ ). The guitar was released on 8th July 2013. He has co-designed it.
•He also auctioned his clothes on March 3, 2013 on tag-on.com to support two charities Crisis UK & Bluebell Wood, announcing the auction on twitter.

[edit]The article now claims that Ed Sheeran's "paternal grandparents were Irish as were his maternal parents"--this doesn't make any sense, there are no "maternal parents." The cited article (number 7) does not definitively state his maternal heritage, just that he moved to Suffolk "with his Irish parents." Citation number 4 states that his dad is of Irish extraction, and where his grandparents live. Seems it should read "paternal grandparents are Irish" and leave out the ambiguous part about his maternal side. Also, there is an incorrect link in the References section. Citation number 6 should be "http://wjlondon.com/athurs-day-ed-sheeran-interview" (not "http://wjlondon.com/athur%e2%80%99s-day-ed-sheeran-interview"). Featured on Album Grammy nom?
[edit]I earlier deleted the Grammy nomination box for Red for the Album of the Year in the awards section because he was just featured on the album and I didn't think that Album nominations included featured artists. A user reverted the edit so now I'm not sure. I looked to find some policy but couldn't find any info. However, Gary Lightbody who is also featured on the song The Last Time on the album has nothing about the nomination on his page so there is an incosistency. Thoughts? The line in the first paragraph of 'Music career' stating: "In 2009, Sheeran played 312 gigs. He recalls reading an interview with James Morrison that said that Morrison had done 200 gigs in a year, and Sheeran wanted to surpass that number." comes from a unreliable source and should probably be removed. If you go the the page that is cited as the source (https://highand45.wordpress.com/2011/05/20/the-amazing-story-of-ed-sheeran/) it is nearly unintelligible and is simply a fan's blog that is uncited and can be percieved as nothing more than their opinion. Singer-songwriter vs Singer and songwriter
[edit]Apparently I have to respect everyone elses opinion, but one editor doesn't have to respect mine, so:
The definition of Singer-songwriter is: "musicians who write, compose and perform their own musical material including lyrics and melodies, as opposed to most contemporary pop music singers who may write or co-write their songs, but who rely mainly on professional songwriters for their musical material."
Ed Sheeran, like many contemporary pop artists, collaborates with a multitude of songwriters and producers to compose his melodies and lyrics. Thus, this does not make him a singer-songwriter. He is a singer who also co-writes songs. There, his bio should be changed to reflect this. It is misleading to call him a singer-songwriter when he does not write and produce the melodies and lyrics by himself (i.e. alone without any input from others). The term singer-songwriter should only be used for artists who write and compose the songs alone. The term is closely related to the folk tradition of composing melodies and lyrics alone, which does not fit into the contemporary pop roster of artists today. Mariah Carey is not called a singer-songwriter (despite writing the lyrics to her first six albums alone and co-wrote 99% of the songs recorded from albums 7 through 14), so I don't see why it should apply to Sheeran, who has only released two albums, and has worked with other writers and producers to compose pretty much all of them. — Calvin999 15:31, 11 October 2015 (UTC)
Ed Sheeran writes and co-writes songs for himself AND performs them, thus making him a singer-songwriter. And he writes and co-writes songs for other performers. Kalope (talk) 03:30, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- He co-writes 99% of his songs with others, so he is not a singer-songwriter. He actually writes songs for artists, too. A singer-songwriter is someone who does everything by themselves for themselves, not collaborations. — Calvin999 11:34, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Before he was signed to a label, he wrote all of his songs BY HIMSELF. Even then, you do not have to write a song by yourself to be a singer-songwriter. Along as you were a part of the songwriting process. Kalope (talk) 06:21, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- No, you have to do everything alone. — Calvin999 09:58, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
It's called singer-songwriter not "singer-SOLO songwriter. If it was called that, then it would be understanding. Artists back then didn't write all of their materials by themselves, but I guess no one ever was considered a singer-songwriter according to you. Kalope (talk) 22:14, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- The fact is they did write themselves back then and that's where the term arose from, that's the whole point. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about nor do you understand music history. You've clearly never even clicked on Singer-songwriter which completely contradicts everything you've said. Until you can propose a valid argument which actually has a cohesive structure to it I have no time to listen to your misinformed conceptions. — Calvin999 08:23, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
Are you seriously getting heated over the "precise" definition of a word? Even if that's what it meant back then, it doesn't just mean that now. Come to 2015. Kalope (talk) 04:58, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
- Please elucidate as to why not. I'm looking forward to your reply, of which I have low expectations. — Calvin999 08:28, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
What are you? Some arrogant, want-to-be know-it-all, who wants everything to be exactly what you want it to be. And cry about it when it doesn't. Open your eyes, man. Nowadays, artists are writing their songs with other people, that's just how it is now. And they are still refer to as singer-songwriters. Kalope (talk) 03:32, 16 October 2015 (UTC)

RfC: Should we add "(read as 'plus')"? after the symbol +
[edit]- The following discussion is an archived record of a request for comment. Please do not modify it. No further edits should be made to this discussion. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
Should we or should we not add (read as "plus") after the symbol? I understand that this should be discussed on the album page, but the content dispute is taking place here. Hence. Efe (talk) 09:57, 4 December 2015 (UTC)
- Sheeran has an album titled x, and either of the notations "(pronounced multiply)" or simply "(multiply)" is usually seen in various works.
- For his debut album +, should we add such similar notation? Billboard has it when reviewing x.
The proper pronunciation of +, as title of the debut album, is "plus". --Efe (talk) 12:07, 5 December 2015 (UTC)
- Yes. Add "(read as "plus")" after the symbol. It took me nearly five minutes to figure out what this RfC is even about; after finally reading through the article I see he has an album called "+" and pronounced "plus." + I agree with Meatsgains and Comatmebro. "+" is a well known symbol. I don't see why you have to include the pronunciation. Because other websites do it? Really? I understand "x", because people often mispronounced it as ex, instead of multiply. Kalope (talk) 23:30, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

Having the name "Ed" included on the page
[edit]Zacwill, if there's any reason for it to be wrong for Sheeran's nickname to be included on his page, and for readers not to know the name he goes by, please explain. Kalope (talk) 01:30, 21 February 2016 (UTC)
- You say that if we don't include the "Ed," readers might not realise that he goes by that name. But it says "Ed Sheeran" right there in the title. There's no chance of any ambiguity here.
- And like I said, names should only be written in the form Forename "Nickname" Surname when the subject actually uses a nickname. Ed is not a nickname; it's a diminutive. A nickname would be a name which bore no relation to his actual forename, like Curly or Coppertop. Zacwill (talk) 17:03, 21 February 2016 (UTC)
- If it says it in the title, it should be included in the intro. The info box states his birthday, occupation, place of birth, etc, and there're still mentioned again in the article. Demi Lovato is the same way. Her full name is Demetria Devonne Lovato, but it says Demetria Devonne "Demi" Lovato, because "Demi" is the name she goes by. AND it states it in the title like it should be. Kalope (talk) 00:12, 22 February 2016 (UTC)
- "If it says it in the title, it should be included in the intro." But why? What is your logic behind this? Zacwill (talk) 16:46, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

Here he is, saying so. Out of his own mouth. You can see him do it:

3:55 onwards.
Newspapers have been repeating the incorrect assertion that he was born in Hebden Bridge. Just because it's in a reputable newspaper doesn't make it a reliable source.
Here's the Hebden Bridge Times getting it right:

- Of the two current sources in the article itself, only one explicitly states he was born in Hebden Bridge. The other one, The Hebden Bridge Times, only states that he was raised there. Furthermore, as the comment above and I previously mentioned, there is a video of Ed explicitly correcting an interviewer who says he was born in Hebden Bridge. How this is not counted as reputable when it's filmed coming from the subject's own mouth is beyond me. I have updated the article using the source provided above. The text identifies Maisie Williams with an actor instead of an actress. It should be changed. Currini89 (talk) 12:25, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Currini89: I'm not sure what policy is in this area (and I won't formally answer the request due to that) but the term actor is often used for women too, these days. 331dot (talk) 12:27, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
- 331dot is right, many people make a point of using the word "actor" as it is meant to be gender free. I'm not sure if this is enshrined in any WP policy. The Maisie Williams article, however, describes her as an actress, so I think this article should follow that one. Any discussion to change should probably be over there. - @Currini89: I think what we are saying above is that while "actor" can be used for women, currently her article describes her as an actress, so that's probably how she should be described here. If there is any desire to change her page to "actor", it will need to be discussed there. 331dot (talk) 13:17, 6 November 2017 (UTC)

Songwriting page for Ed Sheeran
[edit]Hi all,
I'd like to suggest that we create either a section on Ed Sheeran's Wikipedia page itself, or a separate page set-up for his songwriting discography. For example, a separate page could be similar to the pages of other prolific songwriters like Max Martin's production discography or Greg Kurstin's.
I don't think the category page "Songs written by Ed Sheeran" is the best format to read this information. It doesn't denote year of songwriting and also for example, there are songs like Olly Murs' "Love Shine Down" which Ed Sheeran co-wrote - the category page can't list that song as the song is not a single, so does not have a standalone Wikipedia entry and therefore can't be linked to.
Hope this suggestion can be considered - I'd be happy to contribute.

Ed Sheeran a hip hop artist ??!
[edit]The Genre section has the music genre of "hip hop" added to the music genres of the artist, though it's true that he has made 1 or two songs that have taken influence from hip-hop music, Ed Sheeran IS NOT a hip-hop singer, he sings in the pop/folk music genre, an artist can belong to a music genre, example: reggae and make one or two songs in the rock genre, that DOES NOT mean the artist belongs to those genres. My point is that Ed is not a hip-hop artist as his albums are not hip-hop nor have a hip hop influence in most of the songs
The source used to say that Ed Sheeran is a hip-hop artist is a biography in All Music that says he is a POP and FOLK artist that has got influences from dance, hip hop and rock too, so for the credibility of wikipedia i suggest the genre "Hip hop" to be removed from the genre section as he's not a hip-hop artist, but a Pop/Folk singer that has drawn influences from dance, hip hop and rock music. At the moment the + Tour (2011–2013) on the Headlining Act section leads the Music Career section (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Sheeran#2011%E2%80%932013:_+_and_international_success) but it should lead to the tour dates section in the + Album page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%2B_(Ed_Sheeran_album)#Tour_dates). Musicianship/equipment
[edit]The article mentions nothing about his musicianship or equipment, e.g. looping etc. Isn't that a significant part of his performances? JezGrove (talk) 00:43, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
