Combined Track Map
[edit]A combined track map update is pending, however it should be updated after Darian dissipates, so just a reminder. Wikieditorperson1 (talk) 17:44, 20 December 2022 (UTC)

Darian's Hypothetical Page
[edit]If we were to make a page for Darian, What basic elements should it include? 2601:89:8400:ED40:44E5:FD0:E090:941C (talk) 15:30, 30 December 2022 (UTC)
- A page about Darian would be interesting, since the storm ended up becoming a Category 5 on the SSHWS, lasted in two basins, and proved to be resilient many times since it was originally forecasted to not intensify beyond Moderate Tropical Storm intensity, and after weakening, rebounding again with Rapid Intensification. The only reason I would not see Darian being fit for having its own article as it had no impacts to land, so it wouldn't be as notable
- This is just my opinion, so if you want, you can ask other members of the Wiki community or decide for yourself. Wikieditorperson1 (talk) 17:32, 30 December 2022 (UTC)
- A hypothetical page would contain the usual stuff that a meteorological history contains about what the story of Darian was. This includes its formation, became a TC per JTWC/BoM, how it developed, peak intensity, how it weakened etc. However, while there is a big temptation to make an article on Darian, we have to remember that we have two season articles which can and will take the brunt of Darian, unless of course there was a significant impact to the Cocos Islands.Jason Rees (talk) 21:04, 30 December 2022 (UTC)
- Yeah. Knowing all this information, making an article on Darian would be unnecessary., since there are two season articles with multiple paragraphs about Darian. Wikieditorperson1 (talk) 01:14, 31 December 2022 (UTC)
Cyclone Ellie active?
[edit]Is Cyclone Ellie still active? According to JTWC they have stopped tracking this storm 1 week ago and in the BOM's page we can see there's no active storm here. Thingofme (talk) 16:27, 31 December 2022 (UTC)
- Yes it is still active as the BoM have continued to follow Ellie as a tropical low in their tropical weather outlooks for the Western Region as there is a chance that it will move off WA and reintensify in the new year. Jason Rees (talk) 16:34, 31 December 2022 (UTC)
- In the map I can see there are no storms here, but it is predicted (GFS) that a storm may emerge in the Western sea of Australia and maybe it is still named Ellie, not any new name... Thingofme (talk) 02:58, 1 January 2023 (UTC)
- Well we follow what the BoM say since they are pretty much the gatekeepers for the region and at the moment it appears more likely than not that Ellie will emerge into the Indian Ocean before becoming a TC again. From what I remember of the meteorology of this area, a TC moving from the GoC to the Indian Ocean via Western Austrlaia happens every now and again.Jason Rees (talk) 03:28, 1 January 2023 (UTC)

- On January 2, 2023, the JTWC also began to monitor Ex-Ellie for redevelopment, citing that low-level clouds started wrapping into the system's low-level circulation center (Partially exposed). HurricaneEdgar 02:04, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

Tropical Low 12U
[edit]I found on the BoM's latest bulletins that it stated that a weak tropical low classified as 12U had formed, which the JTWC is also tracking as Invest 95S. However, I can't find when it formed (according to the BoM), but it is still a tropical system, so I need help finding the formation date and create a section about it or put it in the "Other Systems" section. Wikieditorperson1 (talk) 12:45, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
- Done archiving BOM outlooks starting from 2023-01-30, which is the first mention of 12U forming. Huge props to @Atomic7732: for creating this archive, it has been really easy to backtrack outlooks. Regards, Nino Marakot 13:34, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

BoM's Archive in other storm
[edit]Hello, I can't seem to find Outlook, which I use. https://paladinofstorms.net/meteo/archiver2/ can someone find the source where it is formed and where it is predicted to form? HurricaneEdgar 08:03, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
For TC Herman
[edit]Are we recording JTWC's 10 min average wind speed for the record here instead of converting it to 1 min winds? ~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2D80:E906:7800:1D35:EBC3:C9DD:6B92 (talk) 23:40, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
Herman duration
[edit]The best track data used for the Herman map ends at 00z on the 5th of April, not during the 2nd of April. It didn't transition to a subtropical or extratropical cyclone, so should the duration be marked as 29 March to 5 April instead of 29 March to 2 April? Maple Doctor (talk) 21:41, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Maple Doctor: The duration typically tells the dates when the system was tropical, and does not include precursors and extratropical points. They only matter when an article about the storm is created, because by then the tropical "death" (i.e post-tropical, remnants, etc.) and the real dissipation date can be distinguished. article for 23U
[edit]i already started the draft 2 days ago because theres a potential about it impacting Australia in the next few days which could probably deserve an article

Herman
[edit]Over the last few days, there has been a slow edit war over what 1-min winds to present for Herman, as for the majority of its existance including when it peaked the JTWC just repacked the BoM's warnings. As a result of this, the winds presented in the advisories were 10-min estimates and thus can not be directly compared to the SSHWS, which is what the infobox is doing when we include 1-min winds=110 (knots) as it is original research. I would assume that this also means that we can not use the running best track in this case, as there is no evidence to say that the 1-min winds=110 (knots). As a result, this leaves us with three choices
- 1) We can either convert the 10-min winds to 1-mintue winds using the WMO guidance of multipling the winds by 1.05, which would cause us to estimate that Herman had winds of 115 kts and was a Cat 4 on the SSHWS.
- 2) We can use the 1-minute winds that the JTWC did provide when issuing advisories (ie: A peak of 105 kts), which would keep it as a Cateogry 3 on the SSHWS.
- 3) We can remove the 1-minute winds for Herman alltogether, until the finalised best track is release sometime in 2024/2025.
Option 3 is my preference as the article wrongly states that the WMO recommends using 1.14 in their report on how to convert the winds, while the 1-min winds provided by the JTWC would seem misleading.Jason Rees (talk) 14:12, 9 April 2023 (UTC)
- Option 3 is also my preference. 1- to 10-minute wind conversions are not straightforward. @Nino Marakot: The WP:BURDEN is on you, as the proponent of keeping the 110 kt as a 1-minute wind figure, to provide a source saying 1-minute winds of 110 knots from the JTWC.--Jasper Deng (talk) 22:49, 9 April 2023 (UTC)
- I think if the storm estimate is for Category 4, it should be there on the cyclone maps, or else it will be WP:OR. HurricaneEdgar 01:19, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
- @HurricaneEdgar: Your comment doesn't make sense, especially in the context of this discussion.--Jasper Deng (talk) 01:40, 10 April 2023 (UTC)

- Remove and keep the winds absent until BT is released. NoahTalk 20:31, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
- Are we sure the current best track data is just the repackaged BoM data? There is a significant difference between the pressures given by the JTWC and the BoM. The BoM has a minimum pressure of 935mb, while the JTWC has a minimum pressure of 948mb. This would suggest the JTWC has already gone back and given their own data, including the windspeed of 110kt as their own estimate.Maple Doctor (talk) 00:36, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- The jump in reasoning to conclude that cannot be made as it is original research. JTWC does not officially publish pressure data and the warnings explicitly stated the winds were repackaged from BoM warnings at peak.--Jasper Deng (talk) 10:03, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
Re @Jasper Deng: The sole reason of adding 110kt was because the ATCF have it, and is usually in 1-minute winds. I was tracking Herman only in my free time during its duration due to academics, so I wasn't able to see the warnings when it peaked. It only came to my attention when Jason talked to me about it personally.
Now, I do think Option 3 is a better idea now that I have the context needed. Regards, 👦 11:53, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
