Moving 'WikiProject Irish Republicanism' outside of banner shell

[edit]

Hi, see Special:Diff/1255442734 and related. Thanks! --Nintendofan885T&Cs apply 00:06, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

{{WikiProject Irish republicanism}} is not belong to WikiProject_template_categories @ User:Cewbot/log/20200122/configuration Kanashimi (talk) 03:38, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think this was caused by someone moving the template and not updating accordingly. We need to have some kind of delay to give us time to fix these, before the bot comes along and removes all the templates from the banner shell — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:40, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe we can treat the robot's actions as a notification that a problem with a template should be fixed? Kanashimi (talk) 08:56, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think we'll find out about the issues before the bot does something as this just requires a null edit, there is nothing visible to notice on our own. That said, maybe the bot can just never move a template starting with the prefix "WikiProject" out of the banner. I don't think there is ever a valid reason for that. Gonnym (talk) 12:53, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kanashimi still happening here. I think the bot should really never remove templates starting with "WikiProject" from the banner shell, even if they are not in the categories it checks. Instead it could add the problematic template to Wikipedia:Database reports/WPBS syntax error pages. Gonnym (talk) 17:20, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's happening again — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:42, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect it's because the API doesn't include this WikiProject when running categorymembers, and I've changed the code to skip this page. Kanashimi (talk) 22:55, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Periodic GIGO report

[edit]

Could the bot check for single-bracket errors like what it encountered here ({{WikiProject Northern Ireland}), and skip those pages and periodically produce a report for manual review? There is no way for {{WPBS}} to find the output from that error, as the template/module are never invoked, and the code simply treated as plain text. I was lucky to spot it only because I happened to be adding {{WP Northern Ireland}} to pages.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  22:26, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I will try to list these problem pages in Wikipedia:WPBS syntax error pages. Kanashimi (talk) 01:08, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
FYI Cewbot added 2 pages today, but the edit summary says "202 page(s)"?   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  14:00, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
 Fixed Kanashimi (talk) 00:52, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Should we clear the page ourselves when completed, or leave it for Cewbot to update, or it doesn't matter?   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  14:10, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The robot will be updated automatically. Kanashimi (talk) 14:58, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Could Cewbot do this instead of this? Parameters at the top of {{WPBS}} is the standard, and makes future human/machine maintenance/searching easier. Also, it makes checking Cewbot's edits easier, since the kept |blp=yes is not shown in this case.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  14:24, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I need time to work on this issue. Also, the parameter ordering problem is not caused by bots, and it's not a serious problem, so I think it probably wouldn't be a good idea to just block all bots from editing this task? Kanashimi (talk) 23:06, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the category from PIQA_categories_to_clean until this can be resolved so Cewbot can run on other cats in the meantime.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  23:24, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's Ok. Kanashimi (talk) 00:34, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ideally, the bottom |blp= is discarded if it duplicates the top, but this is certainly better than before.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  10:40, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please refer to this edit. I think you might want to ask AWB to tweak the way they add parameters. Kanashimi (talk) 12:43, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There are a few plugins that add parameters, but people are also free to code whatever want in AWB. @Rich Farmbrough: would you happen to remember? (it was 8 years ago...)
Regardless, those edits exist now, and should be rectified when encountered, not made worse.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  12:52, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We may have to check the recent edits ... Kanashimi (talk) 12:57, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'll take care of it.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  11:36, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This was almost certainly achieved using regex, and by dividing the editing runs into two lists one for living one for dead. I do agree that all shared parameters should be at the top, and I strongly advise discussion with the AWB folks if that hasn't happened already. I'm all for making these type of things AWB general fixes and letting them fix themselves for a few years, then mopping up. All the best: Rich Farmbrough 15:30, 15 November 2024 (UTC).[reply]
If Cewbot can't do this, then please skip pages with a trailing |blp= so that they can be handled more carefully.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  11:36, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That first diff looks perfect to me? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:44, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see what's perfect about it. The original param is removed, effectively moved from its original location with the bottom param being appended to the top, and an extra space present. It's a lowest-effort fix to resume operation. Now, I don't want perfection to be the enemy of progress, so it's not worth stopping over, but I'd appreciate more care when being applied to several tens of thousands of pages.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  15:55, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean by "bottom param"? We want the parameter moved above the banners, right? Where the bot put it in that edit looks ideal to me. And I really cannot get worried by a space ... — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:12, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh and BTW blp and living are not redundant. BLP also applies to recently deceased people. All the best: Rich Farmbrough 17:24, 15 November 2024 (UTC).[reply]
That's news to me. Where is/was that written? What is the duration of "recently"?   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  15:55, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Just Checking In

[edit]

Hi Kanashimi,

I just thought I'd check how you were doing, and also ask if Cewbot was having any issues. I noticed it hasn't updated the vital article lists or the database report since Nov 6.

If there is an issue, definitely don't feel like you have to rush anything; you already do a lot for us. Things do gradually fall out of sync without Cewbot, but we should still be able to keep working at VA for at least a few weeks more before it causes major problems.

Also, I haven't forgotten that I offered to try making another bot to share the workload with Cewbot (and you as maintainer). I want to finish some data-crunching I promised for other editors first, but I still intend to program something in the coming months. If there's anything smaller I can do in the meantime, just let me know. -- Zar2gar1 (talk) 14:28, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the heads up. I checked, the bot was running every day, but there was a problem due to a recent code change. Now it should work fine. Kanashimi (talk) 21:27, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
