Lack of Neutral point of view and potential POV issues

First of all, this situation is evolving really fast. It is important for everyone that they wait for the things to clear up a bit instead of adding anything and everything. Thus, misleading the readers. Secondly, the article has been written giving weight only to a specific section and ignoring what other facets are involved. I understand RSUW is to be adhered to but so should NPOV. And let's not forget NOT specifically NOTNP AnM2002 (talk) 09:20, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

AnM2002, while you talk of specifics, this comment is full of unhelpful generalisations!! Please make changes to the article rather than just pointing out what is lacking. Most of us clearly see what is lacking. Thank you! DTM (talk) 11:11, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

@DiplomatTesterMan: my intention was to give some not so considerate editors a heads up before they start their insensible revert war and also to start a general discussion about the article's discourse. Unfortunately! not everyone understands the gist of WP:BOLD unlike you. Happy editing!AnM2002 (talk) 11:54, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

The 3 acts are listed - However - the description of “Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020”, the 2nd act, is a complete copy of the first act, “ Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020.” JsGoldie (talk) 12:39, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

Multiple RS available, IMO this should be mentioned in the article. -- Eatcha 05:36, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

We just decided Republic TV was unreliable, Republic World is their website [1] so that is probably not an RS. Hindustan Times and NDTV both have positive MB/FCs so they are probably RSes. As an outside observer looking in, this seems like a strange move on the basis of what I know about Sikhs, Gandhi, the farmer's protests, and the anti-Modi protestors but of all the things I am, an expert in India is not one of them. Title

It seems to me that "2020 Indian farmers' protests" would be the optimal title for this article. If I'm reading it correctly, the subject of the article is a multitude of protests, taking place across many locations nationwide. Anyone else have an opinion on this matter? Joefromrandb (talk) 06:32, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

It is so.SenatorLEVI (talk) 06:53, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

Article Tag

I feel like the article does reflect the encyclopedic tone of Wikipedia. There was the Politics section, which was disputed. But most of the opinionated and unreferenced information was removed. I think we should remove the tag.SenatorLEVI (talk) 07:49, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

The "tone" tag is for articles written like op-ed pieces or advertisements. So even if there was/is an npov issue or something similar from which the article suffers (I take no position either way as far as that goes), the "tone" tag is not appropriate here. Joefromrandb (talk) 02:33, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
I will remove it in a while if no one else objects.[[User:SenatorLEf

VI|SenatorLEVI]] (talk) 06:15, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

Done—I probably should have mentioned it my original response that I had already removed the tag; it was so clearly erroneous that I saw little, if any, benefit to be had by waiting. Joefromrandb (talk) 06:34, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

Attempts by Indian elected officials to spread misinformation - citation does not mention what is written

I have removed the following sentence:

There have been attempts by Indian elected officials to spread misinformation about foreign politicians such as former US President Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, alleging that they are funding and provoking "extremists who support the protests".[1]

The causes of protest

  • 1. Bill does not allow the farmer to approach the court. If there is a dispute, SDM will decide. If the decision is not acceptable then the farmer must approach the Joint Secretary of central govt.
  • a. Imagine 2-acre farmer putting a fight with Corporations with legal departments in front of SDM
  • OR traveling to Delhi to approach Joint Secretary
  • 2. Buyer will draw a contract and if a farmer cannot meet the agreement then SDM can impose fine
  • up to 5 lacs.
  • a. Imagine farmer reading/negotiating Airtel or Jio contracts.
  • b. How many of us were successful in getting these service providers a promised speed?
  • c. Chips maker had a contract with potato farmers in Punjab and later it rejected potatoes on the ground that potatoes are not of same shape or size. Remember potatoes grow in soil and are not
  • manufactured in the cast.
  • 3. Bill waives tax (Punjab 8.5 and Haryana 6%) collected by Mandi boards from private buyers.
  • a. This removes competition for private players from Mandi boards.
  • b. This revenue is collected from central agencies to build rural area infrastructure. Who will now fill that tax hole?
  • 4. MSP is there ; but Bill does not guarantee MSP or mentions it
  • a. Allows private players to buy farm produce at lower price
  • 5. BILL removes essential commodity act
  • a. Allow hoardings and raise price for food items.
  • 6. Bill supporters claim that it removes the middleman (Arthiya).
  • a. But Bill introduces now bigger sharks removing small fish.
  • b. Arthiya works on a 1-2% service fee
  • c. He facilitates purchase from buyer bases on service fee like any other dealership or service provider.
  • d. There is no mark up in the purchase price
  • 7. The crop being a 6-month cycle, Arthiya is like atm to farmer providing credit for 6 months cycle for purchases of inputs.
  • a. Now with Arthiya being removed who will provide credit
  • b. Where does farmer go for money to buy farm inputs and his daily needs
  • c. Bill or Government has not created alternative for this
  • 8. Why protests are limited to Punjab and Haryana
  • a. Farming is a state subject. States like Bihar had removed APMC in 2006 leaving only private players.
  • b. Punjab and Haryana have developed Mandi system over the years where any produce brought into Mandis cannot be purchased below MSP.
  • c. Crops like Rice are sold in states like Bihar at price below the MSP.
  • d. Farmers from neighbouring states sell their produce at MSP in Punjab or Haryana as these states have better Mandi system which offer MSP
  • e. On ground Haryana BJP govt has stopped farmers from other states to sell their crops in Haryana which itself is stand opposite to Central Govts new Bill.

8 Dec 2020 ... They have also decided to continue with planned protests across the country on Saturday. THE TIMES OF INDIA (Readers comment) Bschandrasgr (talk) 09:48, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

Background - suicide

Hi, the suicide of farmers as background seems unnecessary and reads as if it is original research. If this is being touted as a background 'cause' it should have better sources to reflect and support that position. Currently there is nothing to suggest it is related. I suggest removing this section unless somebody has a different view. Hollth (talk) 22:07, 27 December 2020 (UTC)

Lack of Cited sources and referances

Removed a line that stated that the government ordered the police to attack the protestors with rocks. I can find no reliable reference to this. While the order was given to use Teargas and Water Canons which is common, Rock attacks are generally not part of any standard procedures. [Edit: Corrected spelling]

Please modify the picture of the farmers' protest article given in the link: [1]

This picture is not representative of the farmer's protest and is very controversial as several people are holding placards for the release of activists who are booked under law. We used this picture from wikipedia without the above knowledge, in a townhall presentation in Northeastern University, USA and some people raised objections on the pictures and pointed out that this left leaning ideology. We learnt about this picture and Ugrahan group display on Human rights Day [2]when this picture was clicked and taken and was very controversial after that.

The protest is apolitical and should not be tagged as left-leaning from a wikipedia page. Please modify the picture to have a more apolitical view and as well others may not take the protest in a political way. I suggest you use this picture in another section highlighting some demands made by Ugrahan group which is part of the protest.

Can someone either:

  • Replace the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M))'s party flags in the infobox with their respective black-and-white election symbols to match the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) being represented by its election logo?

Or

  • Replace the BJP's election symbol in the infobox with their party flag to match the INC and CPI being represented by their flags?

I prefer the first option as it means that the election symbols will be equally prominent. 45.251.33.84 (talk) 10:50, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

A new Section regarding all the talks between Government and Farmers

Till Date there have been 11 rounds of talks between the government and unions. There should be a section regarding all these talks even if they are a single bullet points for each. In the most recent talk government proposed to suspend The laws in question for 18 months alongside appointing a joint committee to further resolve the deadlock which was rejected. Like this a summarization of each talk can be compiled in this section. Freeroamer90 (talk) 15:05, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

Editing Fatalities Section

The fatalities section overview should be in chronological order. The existing "On 8 January 2021, the week following the onset of winter rains, death toll of farmers including death by suicide during farmer's satyagraha, according to leaders of the farmer's movement, had crossed 120. On 2 January 2021, the estimate of dead-farmers was 57. On 20 December 2020, the day the farmer's collectively condoled the deaths of farmers, the death toll was 41. On 30 December 2020, it was over 50." should be changed to "On 20 December 2020, the day the farmer's collectively condoled the deaths of farmers, the death toll was 41. On 30 December 2020, it was over 50. On 2 January 2021, the estimate of dead-farmers was 57. Misquotation from Scroll.in article in the Response and reactions section

Under the Incidents of fake news sub-section, the sentence that presently reads, 'A protester told Scroll.in that "The Modi media is calling us Khalistanis [...] We have been sitting peacefully for one month, however recently violent. That make us terrorists."' is a misquotation from the original article. It should be changed to: 'A protester told Scroll.in that "The Modi media is calling us Khalistanis [...] We have been sitting peacefully for two months. That makes us terrorists?"' — Preceding unsigned comment added by Epictitus (talkcontribs) 21:01, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

Fake news regarding the farmer protests

The article states that there has been fake news posted by the government and the ruling party BJP but there are also fake news posted in different mediums by the opposition parties and the protesting farmer unions. it also must be noted that majority more than 90% of these farmers are from Punjab and Haryana. The article posted on wiki looks like that all the 28 states and 8 Union Territories are protesting represent the whole of India but in reality it's false. This article is very much biased. Looks like there are a number of reliable sources reporting on the renewed protests ongoing, e.g. Reuters, Associated Press. Any takers on updating the article with the most recent developments? Various news articles are there to verify that state government of Haryana used water canons and boulders to stop farmers from entering Delhi so as not to create mayhem. Sentence should be modified. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.168.162.62 (talk) 10:37, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

Background

I think the Background is providing random tidbits without much relevance to the topic. One of the main demands of the protestors is the continuation of the Minimum Support Price. This would be worth talking about. The Mandi system is also at issue. Does the Mandi system exist all over India or only in Punjab? -- Kautilya3 (talk) 10:48, 9 February 2021 (UTC)

Mandis are pan-India. Agricultural produce market committee. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {Talk / Edits} 13:14, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
I am not so sure. That page says that it is left for the states to regulate it, and only five states are listed. There is also no mention of how effectively the Mandis have been enforced except to say that certain laws have been passed. Personally, I only heard of the powerful grip of mandis in Panjab and Haryana, and not in any other states. The protesting farmers are definitely pro-mandi. They like their mandis and are afraid of losing them. So I think this needs to be better understood. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 14:19, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
The Indian Express said it [4]

This also explains why the protests have mostly been concentrated in Punjab and Haryana. The arhatiya system is more influential in these two states than in other states, agriculture experts said.

So the Mandis are working well only in these two states (and may be some parts of UP), and so these farmers want to preserve it. The other states don't have decent mandis and their farmers apparently don't care. This seems to be a well-kept secret. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 01:23, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

There is also a lot of mysticism about the so-called "Minimum Support Price". This misleading terminology gives one the impression that the government attempts to maintain a certain minimum price for a commodity. This editorial from the Economic and Political Weekly (no less) makes it clear that it is the minimum price at which the Government will buy if it will buy. The editorial also notes that the government granaries are already overflowing. So there is little chance that the government will be able to exercise this price. Without it being able to exercise, setting the MSP achieves absolutely nothing! -- Kautilya3 (talk) 01:34, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

I have also seen it said that the government also buys only from certain states. Panjab and Haryana are always there. But rice is also acquired in AP and some other states. Apparently nothing was ever acquired from Bengal. So, once again, this may be an issue that exercises the Punjabi and Haryanvi farmers but not others. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 01:39, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

  • Oppose - not required, completely unnecessary. Almost every kind of protest is always supported by various groups/unions. That doesn't mean it is a protest by those "unions", but the people (in this case, farmers) involved in those unions. By the way, your intention to make this change seems to be to portray these protests as not enjoying singnificant support among farmers, which they obviously do.
  • Oppose - The unions initiated the protests, and the farmers joined the protests; then it's become the farmers' protest. STSC (talk) 18:23, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
  • Support - This is a protest by some farmer unions and not all farmers in India. The farmers who are taking part in this protest are majorly from Punjab, Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh. There are other major agrarian states in India, such as Maharashtra, Andhra, Telangana and Tamilnadu. But, no visible and/or significant protest can be seen from farmers of these states. Moreover, support or opposition for these protests have become more political or caste/religion-based, which is very unfortunate. While the farmer unions from Punjab are using the Sikh identity to garner support, Rakesh Tikait of BKU is using the Jat caste identity. Bsskchaitanya (talk) 14:04, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
Comment A cursory search shows news reports of protests in all the States you mentioned. The sizes do vary over time and place. Further, Karnataka, which you have not mentioned also had protests. Vikram Vincent 07:09, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
  • Oppose - I understand the point, but we have to go by the terminology used in WP:RS. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 14:13, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
  • Oppose: per RS it is a farmers' issues where the farmers are protesting and have organised via unions. Vikram Vincent 07:02, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
  • Oppose Weird logic used to the proposal. Multiple WP:RS in the article mention it as a farmer's protest. - The9Man (Talk) 08:40, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
  • Oppose: I don't see any reason why this should be labelled only a farmer union's protest. There are no indications that it is only unions protesting. Tanyasingh (talk) 10:12, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
  • Oppose: Granted, many of the protests may be organized by the farmer's unions, but you need to understand that it is not one contiguous protest, but rather a collection of smaller protests. Some are organized by the unions, some are not, but even the ones organized by the unions have non-union members, and vise-versa. JazzClam (talk) 14:46, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Requests to make the following edits

1) In the first paragraph, the line "Farmer leaders have rejected a Supreme Court of India stay order on the implementation of the farm laws as well as the involvement of a Supreme Court appointed committee." is misleading. Instead, it Should be: Farmer leaders have welcomed a Supreme Court of India stay order on the implementation of the farm laws, but have rejected to appear before a Supreme Court-appointed committee as all members of the committee have already publicly supported the farm laws.

2) In the same paragraph, the line "On 3 February, farmer leaders warned of escalating the protest to overthrowing the government if the farm laws were not repealed." is odd. Out of all that over 40 farmer leaders have said in over 100 days of protests, why is this single rhetorical statement by a single leader stated in the first paragraph itself? If such single statements are to be included in first para, why not include how Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad dishonestly disparaged farmers by calling them "Tukde tukde gang" without any evidence? Or how Union minister Piyush Goyal called farmers "Maoists" without any evidence? So, I request that this sentence be removed as such individual statements do not add any value to the discussion in the introductory paragraph itself.

3) In the third paragraph, the line "The Indian government ordered the police and law enforcement of various states to attack the protesters using water cannons, batons, and tear gas to prevent the farmer unions from entering into Haryana first and then Delhi." has no citations. This and this can be added.

4) In this section of the page, regarding death of Navreet Singh, citation no. 191 to The Wire is broken. Please add this article from the same author, and this detailed report by the Caravan magazine.

As of 9 January 2021, the death toll of farmers by suicide to protest the government's farm policy was five. Sant Baba Ram Singh, a Sikh priest, shot himself on 16 December 2020 at the Singhu border in protest against the farm laws.[205][206] According to J.S. Randhawa, Senior Superintendent of Police, Sonepat, Haryana, Ram Singh, Left behind a 10-page note, dated 14 December, and a handwritten suicide letter, dated 16 December 2020, in which he wrote that he could not bear the pain of the farmers. At his funeral on 18 December, in Karnal, attended by farmer leaders, religious heads, and Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee chief Bibi Jagir Kaur, the suicide letter was read out, which said, "Bullets fired from the guns kill only those whom they strike. The bullet of injustice, however, kills many with a single stroke… It is humiliating to suffer injustice."[207]

On 18 December, according to Joginder Singh Jawanda, BKU (Ugrahan) leader, a heavily indebted 22-year-old Punjab farmer, killed himself with poison in his village after returning from Singhu, the protest site on the Delhi border.[181]

On 27 December, Amarjit Singh Rai, a lawyer, committed suicide by taking poison. Rai before he took his life wrote in a note that he was "sacrificing his life" in support of farmer's protest, and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to "listen to the voice of the people".[208]

2 January 2021, Kashmir Singh Ladi, 75-year-old farmer from Bilaspur, Rampur district, Uttar Pradesh (UP), committed suicide. He was the fourth farmer suicide since the farm protesters were stopped on 26 November 2020, by UP Police on Delhi-UP Ghazipur Border, also called UP gate. Kashmir Singh who had been camping at the border since 28 November along with his son, and grandson, hanged himself in a toilet. Ladi, according to a government official, left a note in Punjabi, that says, "Till when shall we sit here in the cold? This government isn't listening at all. Hence, I give up my life so that some solution emerges."[183]

On 9 January 2021, it was reported that Amrinder Singh, a 40-year-old Punjabi farmer, had killed himself by swallowing Aluminium phosphide tablets at the Singhu border. The man had been depressed at the state of the negotiations and had downed the tablets at a stage set up for protesters to speak, whereupon he was rushed to the hospital, but they were unable to resuscitate him.[2

(Justification: this frames an allegation in an appropriate context, and also fixes the factual error re: the charges applied to the persons in question - the charges dealt with communal harmony, promoting enmity etc, instead of sedition as the paragraph currently states. This request may please be read with my previous request for removal of Ref 201, which points to a report that has since been taken down.)

Not done for now: This is already pretty much what is in the article. The only bit that isn't is the sentence about a video showing the toppling; but we're not required to list every detail about the event; we only need to provide a summary; so I don't think that sentence is particularly relevant - it is already clear from the text that the only ones who support this allegation are the family members (journalists reporting on it is a different thing). RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 17:18, 25 April 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the response.

1. The nature of the charges is a factual error that warrants fixing. Sedition is Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code, while the charges levied are under sections 153A, 502, and 505, while deal with "misinformation" and "communal harmony". This is backed by the references above.

2. The allegations under discussion run afoul of Wikipedia's Relevance policy. As I justify below, this is information "twice removed", and therefore relevance level "lower" should apply.

Policy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Relevance

Relevant snippet:

Relevance level "Lower" – Information that is "twice removed" should usually not be included unless the other considerations described above are unusually strong. For example, in the above "John Smith" article, "Murderer Larry Jones was also a member of the XYZ organization."

The article is about the fact that protests on an issue happened. The fact that they contributed to certain participants' deaths is directly relevant information.

1. Details of how those deaths occured are "information once removed".

2. The fact that certain allegations were made regarding those deaths is "information twice removed".

3. Since there are no "unusually strong" considerations (no plausible evidence for those allegations to be true exists, and plausible evidence against exists), the exemption that is granted within the policy does not apply.

4. The statement "Varadarajan has called the police FIR malicious prosecution" is also "information twice removed". I can think of no "unusual considerations" that would apply in the case either.

5. The following paragraph is also factually incorrect. The charges against Mandeep Punia were not relevant to his report. Although that may be the motivation, but from an objective POV, it's still speculation. A more neutral approach here may be to separate the official charges from a possibly relevant activity.

A more appropriate edit that addresses all these concerns may be (merging paragraphs 2 and 3):

Multiple journalists and an opposition MP were charged with "spreading misinformation" and "disrupting communal harmony" for reporting his family's allegations that gunshot wounds at the hands of Delhi Police contributed to Navreet's death. Separately, a freelance journalist, Mandeep Punia, was arrested by Delhi Police on January 30 for "allegedly obstructing police and causing hurt to police personnel" at Singhu border the day before. Mandeep had previously captured a Facebook video of police misconduct at the protest location [5]. He was granted bail on February 2.

Discussion Request, re: events of Jan 26

I'm trying to collect inputs on an edit request I've submitted to this page (Extended-confirmed-protected edit request on 23 April 2021 (4)). The section, as it stands, has multiple issues:

1. Factual errors. The paragraph alleges that certain journalists were charged with sedition, however the references clearly state that they were charged with "spreading misinformation" and other charges. (The exact IPC sections are listed in my Edit Request).

2. Factual errors and neutrality issues with "Mandeep Punia was arrested by Delhi Police on 30 January in view of his reports regarding the violence". The charges against the journalist, regardless of their merits, were for "obstructing police and causing them hurt". It's extremely likely that it was actually his unfavorable report that triggered these charges, but the connection can't be presented as a matter of fact. My edit separates the official charges and the "offending" report, and I believe it's the best way to report the incident neutrally.

3. Relevance issues: The paragraph goes into certain allegations re: a participant's death. With no evidence existing for those allegations (and evidence existing against), their relevance to the article as "information twice removed" under Wikipedia's relevance policy becomes questionable. Same goes for a quote from one of the journalists who was charged, that the charges are "malicious".

I have proposed an edit to address these issues. The intent is not to minimize or exaggerate any of the offending parties' roles, but precisely the opposite. I hope these suggestions are taken in that spirit. Happy to hear any feedback!

Proposed edit (Section 5.3, merging paragraphs 2 and 3)

Multiple journalists and an opposition MP were charged with "spreading misinformation" and "disrupting communal harmony" for reporting his family's allegations that gunshot wounds at the hands of Delhi Police contributed to Navreet's death. Kkiddu, would the unreferenced part of that just be referenced to the existing sources in the article, or would all of it be sourced to the one Indian Express article? ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 11:57, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

Repairing the first citation

In the reference list, there is a title breakage in the very first citation added. Looks like the citation was inserted improperly without the use of title tag. please fix it as soon as possible. Thank You. Have a nice day! Utkarsh555 (talk) 07:26, 7 May 2021 (UTC)

Protests called off after intense discussions by SKM

https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/farmers-end-year-long-protest-as-govt-agrees-to-all-demands-of-protesters-101639032007473.html Given that the SKM has decided to call off the protests if the government accepts all their demands, it doesn't make any sense to show the protests as still going on.

Incorrect use of the military infobox

Wikipedia does not use the military-style infobox for any sort of protest/ unarmed conflict. A few examples of events where there were casualties but no military infobox:

1. 2021 Capitol Hill riot: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_United_States_Capitol_attack 2. Capitol Hill Occupied Zone: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitol_Hill_Occupied_Protest 3. The "Emu War": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Emu_War/Archive_1#War_or_not?

The last one was discussed intensively in the talk page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2409:4043:239B:AC9C:F9EF:FA08:AE19:9B18 (talk) 14:03, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
