Season summary
[edit]August
[edit]After an underwhelming preseason, Chelsea had a rough start to their 2024–25 season, losing 0–2 to Manchester City at home. Erling Haaland opened the scoring in the 18th minute, but despite the Blues' best efforts to equalize, former Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovačić scored from outside of the box to win the game for City.[2] It marked the debut appearances of new signings Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Marc Guiu, Pedro Neto, and Renato Veiga. It was also Enzo Maresca's first competitive match as Chelsea manager, who, after the match, stated: "We were against the champions today. We will continue and win games. They [Manchester City] are a master of keeping hold of the ball. The performance was there and that is the main thing."[3]
Chelsea quickly found form, however, defeating Swiss club Servette 2–0 in the 2024–25 UEFA Conference League play-off round, Chelsea's first ever appearance in the competition.[4] Goals came from a Christopher Nkunku penalty and substitute Noni Madueke.[5] Tosin Adarabioyo and Filip Jörgensen both debuted in this match.
On the morning of 25 August, prior to their away match against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Noni Madueke posted on his public Instagram story, saying, "Everything about this place [Wolverhampton] is sh*t".[6] He later revealed that this was unintentional and not meant to be made public.[6][7] However, despite being booed throughout the match by Wolves fans, he scored a 15-minute hat-trick in the second half, with all 3 goals being assisted by Cole Palmer.[8] In his debut since being on loan at Chelsea, João Félix also scored, ending the match 6–2. Cole Palmer's goal in this match won the Premier League Goal of the Month award for August 2024.[9]
