Article on homological conjectures in commutative algebra is in need of update

[edit]

If someone here has some time to spare, please update the article Homological conjectures in commutative algebra. Yves André proved the existence of weakly functorial big Cohen-Macaulay algebras, which implies several problems on the list. His paper is published in the Journal of the American Mathematical Society Fixmaster (talk) 01:41, 3 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Should my user page be deleted?

[edit]

Again someone is trying to delete my user page. If you have an opinion on that, please express it at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:JRSpriggs (2nd nomination). JRSpriggs (talk) 02:40, 10 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Statistical stability

Statistical stability (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Could someone more familiar than me with the subject matter take a look at this article? Over at Wikipedia talk:Articles for deletion, an IP is trying, somewhat unsuccessfully, to get an AfD started, and from a quick look at it, they seem to have a point. [1] The IP seems to think this is a duplicate of the article deleted via Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Theory of hyper-random phenomena, apparently created to promote a non-notable theory. Possibly we are both wrong, and there is something of merit in the article, but if so, at minimum it needs translation into something better approximating the English language. I don't expect to fully understand the more difficult mathematical topics (or even the simpler ones, sometimes ), but I don't think it is unreasonable to hope that they give us poor innumerates a vague clue as to whether they are actually about anything of consequence. AndyTheGrump (talk) 21:58, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Surprise, surprise (or actually not), the article Statistical stability was essentially created in one shot, with references and all, by a single author, I.I.Gorban, the same author of Theory of hyper-random phenomena which has now been deleted. All the edits following the initial one were just minor tweaks. Another case of self-promotion, or at least promotion of a field where he is the main contributor? PatrickR2 (talk) 07:09, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes exactly. This is why I tried to nominate the article. Right now we are stuck on purely procedural grounds (you'll see...). Letting a proper AfD discussion run its course seems to the right thing, but that would require intervention/help by a registered user, perhaps from here. 2001:6B0:2:2801:740C:A6A2:BA7B:1B33 (talk) 08:39, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I see the article has now been nominated for deletion. Thanks. AndyTheGrump (talk) 03:19, 10 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And now it's gone. XOR'easter (talk) 14:22, 15 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Edit warring at Terence Tao

[edit]

There's some edit warring happening at Terence Tao, from an editor who wants (from my viewpoint) to add some unclearly written and relatively unimportant material to the lead paragraph. The user has been warned twice (by me and someone else) about edit warring, via the edit summaries Gumshoe2 (talk) 18:26, 24 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
