Translations?

[edit]

Could I add the French-to-English translation page to this? There are quite a few requests there for translations of French articles of small communities and the like; that should be relevant, no? Tamarkot 17:13, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mean the French Collaboration Project WP:FCP or Wikipedia:Translation into English/French (which are already listed)? I've put the word "translation" in one of the headings to make it easier to find. --NYArtsnWords 17:41, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request for information on Monaco--EU relations

[edit]

For the article list of European Union member states by accession, I'd need information on the current stance of Monegasque parties and politicians on EU accession -- are there any which advocate it? Has it been ruled out decisively? Any kind of information would be welcome. Thanks! —Nightstallion (?) 18:22, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Monaco would love to be part of the EU, but it's never going to happen. Bear in mind it's a 1000 year old sovereign-rule dynasty. The are some inconsequential council elections, where a handful of folk from half a dozen very wealthy Monegasque families get to have a say in the running of things (ie carving up the lucrative building rights and service contracts), but the place is essentially run by 1) the Prince 2) the French government. Only a small proportion of the country's residents are even allowed to vote! 3 generations of your family have to have been born in the Principality for you to qualify as Monegasque. You really couldn't find a less democratic place on earth, with a greater disparity of income. It stands in complete opposition to everything the EU stands for - democracy, equality, freedom, transparency, solidarity, mobility - and has no intention of changing. They were lucky they somehow sneaked into the Council of Europe, but the day they get EU membership, is the day the EU means nothing at all. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.209.108.110 (talk) 19:55, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Translation Citation

[edit]

Please excuse a poor newbie, as this question is probably in the wrong place, but I've been attempting to improve the translation of a section of the article Bruno Pelletier which seems to be taken from his official website in French (a link to which is at the bottom of that article). Others are welcome to help translate, since I don't speak French fluently, but what I would like to know is how it should be cited. If a translation is made, it's no longer taken directly from the official statement on the website. Is some notation required to state that it has been translated? ElinneaG 23:24, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Addition: I also meant to ask about whether changing this translation for better readability in English is considered acceptable, since it's given as a quote spoken by someone else. I haven't done translation on Wikipedia before, so I don't know the etiquette or standards. Hopefully some more experienced person can help me out. ElinneaG 23:43, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed WikiProject France

[edit]

There is currently a proposed project dealing with the subject of the nation of France on the Wikipedia:WikiProject/List of proposed projects. Particularly now that article assessment is both a possibility and in several areas an ongoing reality, I personally believe that wikipedia's content relating to France could be dramatically improved by the creation of such a project. Also, creation of such a project would allow for more "advertising" of the existence of a collaboration, through the presence of a project banner on the appropriate pages, and probably draw even more editors to active participation in improving content related to France than the notice board does currently. I would welcome any parties who share this belief to list themselves as members on the page above, and, if there are enough members, to help in the creation of the project itself. Also, the new Wikipedia:WikiProject Germany, which has similar scope, is up and running and assisting in the development of Germany's content, so there is reason to think a similar effort related to France could work as well. Badbilltucker 14:55, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great idea ! It would definately help in organising and structuring the France related information. STTW (talk) 13:35, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As a tireless promoter of French-related articles on the Eng wiki (Portal:France and the France-related topics notice board, the French art. French literature and History of France pages), I have to applaud the idea (the same reasons were behind my creating this notice board). This being said, I just don't understand why, for some reason, we don't get a lot of Francophiles on the Eng wiki (note, for example, how nothing has happened with the WP:FCP since its initial creation) and I gather that most French speakers are spending their time working exclusively on the Fr wiki. I would love to see this change... but how to do it? --NYArtsnWords 18:39, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Really good question, and I wish I had a really good answer. I can only hope that publicizing the new project might help, as then the Francophiles would know that there is a project here. Also, and hear my own incompetence at French is a definite disservice, maybe if we could add a couple of messages in the french wiki, like fr:Projet:Français in particular, we might be able to get some of them to come over to the English side. Those are probably the two best ideas I can personally think of, which, admittedly, really isn't saying much. Badbilltucker 18:51, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have added a request on the fr:Discussion Projet:Français, hoping for some to change sides. STTW (talk) 22:40, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

French people in the colonies

[edit]

Hi, folks. I asked this question at the Africa-related regional notice board, but so far I've gotten no response. So, maybe you can give me some ideas. I was trying to clean up Category:Cameroonian people a few days ago, and I came across some problem individuals. How should French nationals who lived in Cameroon while it was a French colony be categorized? They obviously qualify for various France-related categories, but where should they go on the Cameroon section of the category tree? Right now, they're just hanging out at Category:Cameroonian people. Have any of you encountered similar situations with regard to former French colonies? However these individuals end up being categorized, I'd like it to be consistent with what has been done before (as long as they somehow remain on the Cameroon side of the categorization tree). I've cross-posted this in slightly different form to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Germany‎. Thanks, — BrianSmithson 22:44, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. This reminds me of the "French" vs. "French language" vs. "French nationality" question regarding writers (with problem cases such as Samuel Beckett). I would start by giving a clear definition of "Cameroonian people" on the category page (people of Cameroonian nationality? including people from before the creation of modern-day Cameroon?). Then, I see that Category:South African people gives one solution to the complicated problem via the subcat Category:South African people by ethnic or national origin which is itself broken into subcats. That seems like a good compromise. --NYArtsnWords 23:59, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of castles in France - request for suggestions

[edit]

I recently came across the page List of castles in France. Unfortunately, the list was very inaccurate, largely due to the translation of château as castle whether referring to a real castle, a palace, mansion or even vineyard. I corrected this, and got bitten by the bug of adding more castles to the list and, more importantly, more articles to English Wikipedia. A large number of these I have provided by translating from French Wikipedia. I have been joined in this task by other editors, most notably User:M-le-mot-dit and User:Kaustuv. We now have a quite respectable list of articles, but, of course, it is getting unwieldy.

We have discussed how best to arrange the list and two alternative lists have been drafted. Comments or suggestions from Wikipedia users with knowledge or interest in France on which would be best to use (or something completely different) would be most welcome. The lists are:

Thank you in advance. Emeraude 11:47, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As the list is relatively long, division in région and then départment gives a little more clarity. Also not all are very familiar with the political divisions of France so accompanied by a map as done by User:M-le-mot-dit/draft is helpful. STTW (talk) 12:30, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder if a single map in the beginning would be as helpful as all these small maps in each section? I've changed the proposition to show both alternatives. — M-le-mot-dit (d) 13:06, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I like the big map. Well done. Emeraude 13:13, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I find the big map harder to read than the individual small maps because the names crawl all over each other. I also prefer not having to scroll up and scan a map to remind myself where a region or department is located. That said, there is no reason we can't have both kinds of maps. List of castles in France: I have looked at the users' suggestions and comments and have made a new draft that I think could be the way forward. It uses the basic format drafted by User:M-le-mot-dit and the sort of layour used in the French Wiki.

I can see from the History that you've edited it, but I can't see any difference on the page!?!? Emeraude 17:16, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That explains it. Thought I was missing something or going blind! What do you think of the way I have proposed the page? Emeraude 17:33, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not too fond of the table of contents, but I don't currently have a proposal that looks any better. I have my user preferences set to hide the TOC always, so it always bothers me when a TOC is hard-coded in the page without any way to hide it. There's also the issue that the TOC will show up when printed, unlike regular TOCs. (I guess it does show up in print when TOCs are enabled in user prefs.) Kaustuv CHAUDHURI 18:06, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I like this presentation too. The list is becoming long and the article could be shorten with the same informations.

  • I've no preference between mixing English and French articles or not, but italics are better than "Fr wiki" in a compact list. I think that one line of explanation in the intro will be useful.
  • I would prefer another character as a list separator, like "•" or "—".
  • Région may be wikilinked
  • There is no need to hard-code the TOC if département names are bulleted, it was just to avoid a very long one; we could satisfy Kaustuv and use a regular TOC.

In any case, when a presentation is choosen, some names will have to be reviewed (specially in red links) for homogeneity in the use "Château de" in article names but not in the list. — M-le-mot-dit (d) 10:20, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed the list separator to "•" as suggested - much better - and wikilinked the regions. I agree that combining English and French articles, with italics for French, would be easier to use. As for the TOC, I have no opinion on this; I will leave that to thers to sort out. I think we are getting close to a final version. I will work at combining the French and English later today. Emeraude 12:18, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great! I change the TOC, if you don'y mind (just commented). — M-le-mot-dit (d) 17:33, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Following discussion of various drafts to improve the List of castles in France page, I think the consensus is now that we make the change. I have therefore done so. Thanks you to everyone for taking part. Improvements may still be needed - any comments gratefully received. Emeraude 13:25, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Working on French colonial history: need cat advice

[edit]

I'm in the midst of writing and translating stuff on French colonialism in West Africa, but there really are not categories covering these topics.

I'd like to create a category covering just the AOF, and one covering just the AEF, as these topics seem scattered around at the moment.

I'm thinking of creating the following sub categories in [Category:Former_colonies_of_France]

1) French Colonialism in Sub-Saharan Africa a) French Colonialism in West Africa b) French Colonialism in Central Africa

2) French Colonialism in Asia a) French Colonialism in Southeast Asia b) French Colonialism in South Asia

3) French Colonialism in North Africa and the Near East 4) French Colonialism in The Pacific 5) French Colonialism in America

Others could be fleshed out, but the selection of articles on French Colonialism in West Africa is very spread out at the moment. I keep finding great things, though, that belong here in France, specific African nations, Islam, Colonialism, etc.

Thoughts/advice? T L Miles 16:53, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On second thought, I took the path of least resistance and just added subcats French West Africa, French Equitorial Africa, and French Indochina to Category:Former colonies of France. Obviously more subcats are needed, but now AOF specific things can end up in cat:French West Africa not just Category:Former colonies of France T L Miles 17:19, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Paris Commune POV

The recent string of edits by Hubertgrove on the Paris Commune page [1] do not appear to be NPOV to me. However, this is a contentious subject and I would appreciate the oversight of other editors. --Nixin06 (talk) 22:03, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry - what aspects of my edits are non-POV? I only removed speculation not germane to the actual historical events (of the Paris Commune) and historicist jargon . I too would appreciate guidance. Specifically, I instated mention of Communard violance (without downplaying the larger anti-Communard violence) and removed from the lede weighty observations on how the Commune later led to disputes between orthodox Marxists and anarchists - disputes that did not take place in either the location or the time frame of the actual Commune. I would also like to - respectfully - suggest that Nixin06 might be prone to NPOV edits since, according to his own page, he says own his talk page that his editing policy is shaped by the "World Socialist Web Site".Hubertgrove (talk) 10:28, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
