Policy

[edit]

Shouldn't this be policy? Tim Vickers (talk) 05:03, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I hope not. We don't need a policy for every obvious error. Superm401 - Talk 08:29, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was joking, having this as policy would be a classic case of instruction creep. :) Tim Vickers (talk) 17:37, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect

[edit]

I fully support a redirect to this from Wikipedia:Hey y'all, watch this! --NellieBly (talk) 11:07, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect Created! ♠♥♣Shaun9876♠♥♣ Talk Email 17:30, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
there should also be a redirect called WP:You call me an idiot?! Watch this guys! AmazedCheezBalls (talk) 00:42, 28 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Profanity

[edit]

"and then there are "oh fuck" situations." Maybe the F-word should be removed. Korodzik (talk) 11:32, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why? Resolute 14:32, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:PROFA. Korodzik (talk) 08:53, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This isn't an article, and I really don't see how the statement in context could be considered offensive by a reasonable person, imo. Resolute 14:41, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DELETE THE MAIN PAGE!!!

[edit]

Seriously! I try to do some research on main pages, and find this crap! It is a blatant violation of WP:SELF, and is unencyclopedic. 75.118.170.35 (talk) 15:26, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No. This policy says that it is not allowed to delete it!! And don't think I'm going to like being trolled if you see this... From, Mapleya (MAY-peel-YUH) (talk) 18:10, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

BEANS

[edit]

This page is a violation of BEANS. Fahadsadah (talk) 16:29, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ha ha! Exactly what I was thinking. I was looking at that vid of the nuke going off and started to think "Blanking the main page?!? Hmm...! It might just do the trick!" for the first time in my life! ;-) Trigaranus (talk) 17:29, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lame Edit Wars

[edit]

There seems to have been a long edit war about whether the true figure for an incorrect claim, unverifiably made in IRC, is 5000 or 9000. Anyone want to write it up for Lame Edit Wars? 87.243.208.102 (talk) 03:38, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Violation

[edit]

This violates WP:BEANS.

  • This is an essay, thus I believe it is except from Wiki Policy. Furthermore WP:BEANS is an essay, not Wiki Policy, and thus not binding. However, I'll concede that essays can be taken into account when editing an article, particularly if that essay reflects a consensus or widely help opinion such as WP:BEANS. Second, it seems appropriate to consider existing Wiki Policy in writing these essays.
  • I'm not sure which came first BEANS or the deletion of the main page. I think that this essay and BEANS should be more clear about that. Easy to research, but I don't have time tonight and I'm still relatively new. KonigProbst (talk) 07:07, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What's so funny

[edit]

To all watchers hereof. I intend to remove the {{Humorous essay}} notice from this essay. All joking aside... well, that's the point. The topic isn't funny and the page isn't humorous. Nor should it be. If I don't hear anything back within an undefined time period varying from 5 seconds to 24 hours, I will delete the notice. Thank You For Your Support. 12.51.248.245 (talk) 13:41, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

the point is, someone said that it could not be deleted (as a joke) but then someone went and tried (and it did get deleted) so this page is to just remind people, not to delete the main page. Sophie (Talk) 13:50, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As someone who worked with the individual who deleted the main page and who saw first hand what happened as a result, I have to say that yes, it was pretty funny. Resolute 14:10, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes this is widely considered to be a humorous essay please don't remove. -DJSasso (talk) 14:54, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly what is humorous about this essay? The event, yes, that was humorous. But this essay is in the nature of "lessons learned," and it's a serious matter. kcylsnavS{screechharrass} 17:00, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The event was funny. The article describes the event. The article is funny. C Teng(talk) 16:55, 5 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
When i first read this, i found it hilarious! and i still do… i think there should be more stuff like this around. - Benzband (talk) 18:36, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
God knows what whould have struck the mind of the admin who accidentally deleted it! extra999 (talk) 07:02, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Should I?

[edit]

Can I joke about joking about joking about joking about joking about joking about joking about joking about joking about joking about joking about joking about joking about joke about joking about joking about joking about joking about joking about joking about joking about joking about joking about joking about joking about joking about deleting the main page? 203.11.71.124 (talk) 06:25, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hell no. David Ramsbotham (talk) 23:57, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If anyone cares

[edit]

Apparently the incident here wasn't the first time the Main Page was deleted. Digging through some old archives for fun, I found this:

Grammar

[edit]

Does anyone else see this sentence as encouraging making the comment? "If you find yourself having to say "jokes do not come across well here", you |||are||| best off commenting on such."

I believe the formatting should be: "If you need to say, "Jokes do not come across well on here", you are best off not making such a comment." KonigProbst (talk) 07:07, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, it's encouraging. But I don't get the general joke here, so can't say if discouraging readers would solve anything. I'll go with keeping it as it is, completely arbitrarily. Sorry about your luck. But things are bound to get better! InedibleHulk (talk) 05:55, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't that the truth

[edit]

"In other words, do not even joke about causing disruption. Someone may miss the joke. Some will even warn not to even joke about joking about causing disruption. Some will even warn not to even joke about others warning you not to joke about joking about causing disruption. Some will even... well, you get the idea."

Boy, isn't that the truth. Even the most blatant of jokes is often lost on overly religious editors who take Wiki (and themselves) way too seriously. Remember, Wikipedia is not an encyclopedia. Jokes abound in MMORPGS, including this one. Please, editors, lighten up and get over yourselves.

If you'll excuse me, I need to hijack an administrative account and delete the main page... nay, 80% of Wiki. MXocrossIIB (So, you were saying?); 18:42, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

...is a 404. We should remove it or change it to an archive.org link. Remagoxer (talk) 09:56, 11 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Bigdelete

[edit]

;) --Base (talk) 14:41, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Base the restriction on deleting the main page isn't based on revisions, see https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/plugins/gitiles/operations/mediawiki-config/+/28faa279dacf6a4d6f0a663844e913738c2fa142/wmf-config/CommonSettings.php#2051 Also, adding a bunch of reviews just to make something harder to delete may get you blocked as a sysadmin action, ref https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2008-February/036197.html --DannyS712 (talk) 11:24, 12 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
DannyS712, oh, interesting, I've missed the reference and didn't know this originally. Thanks! --Base (talk) 11:38, 12 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This essay needs a counterpart…

[edit]

…named something like Wikipedia:Be bold in deleting the Main Page![Humor] A smart kitten (talk) 18:08, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Delete the main page!

[edit]

I made a counterpart essay for this: Go ahead, delete the main page. vghfr, harbinger of chaos 21:18, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
