Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon. Band 29. Saur, München, Leipzig 2001, S. 277.

[edit]

{{Resolved}} Joachim Möller: Eintrag in Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon. Band 29. Saur, München, Leipzig 2001, S. 277.

  • This is volume 29 of the German language biographical dictionary of artists
  • Page 277 should help improve citations for article Richard Doyle, hopefully his birthdate (Geburtsdatum in German)
  • Title of hardcover should have something like "Band 29 Donny - Du"
  • Publication Date: June 2001
  • ISBN: 978-3-598-22769-1
  • DE GRUYTER SAUR publisher's product page details: https://www.degruyter.com/view/product/53644

Alternative (I'm less sure whether this has the Doyle entries):

  • online ebook: https://www.degruyter.com/view/product/161892
  • ISBN 978-3-11-184000-0
  • Expected title: Teil 2 Künstlerische Berufe

De Gruyter Saur appears to offer an online database search here to academics at a (high) price. If anyone's university has this service, a search for Richard Doyle, and maybe pruned results for the other Doyles, would be very helpful.

Binghampton University appears to have a few online volumes viewable to subscribers, but not the volume 29 needed. See search results for those viewable online, and these available for branch delivery

Richard Doyle should appear on page 277, the other Doyles may appear on the same or preceding pages. --84user (talk) 00:01, 31 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much, MrLinkinPark333. I discovered I need to write a couple of articles to support the FFM article, one of which, Female Medical Society has just landed, and t'other, The Ladies' Medical College, is about to start. With luck the paper will inform both of those, as well as FFM. Sandemanization - the last paper you got for me - will have to wait its turn, but it was exactly what was after. Please check The Times article that demands subscription

[edit]

{{Resolved}}

Can anybody with access to The Times please check if Shamash, Jack (March 6, 2004). "Yiddish once again speaks for itself". is the source for this paragraph in the Yiddish article?

Note: I am aware the article number is not the same, but since 1. an article with that number doesn't exist in their archives, 2. the structure of that website's pages has been changed, and 3. this is the only article that seems to be discussing the same subject, I wonder if perhaps this is the same article or if it at least contains the same information relevant to the "Yiddish" article. Debresser (talk) 21:31, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Debresser, the article is generally supportive of the statements made in the first two sentences of that paragraph, but the geographical information in the paragraph is more detailed than that in the article. If you send me an email, I can reply with a PDF of the article. John M Baker (talk) 16:02, 16 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I couldn't find your email address on your userpage. I did find your email address at Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young, LLP as well as at the Fundlaw Yahoo Groups, but somehow I wasn't sure you'd be thrilled to receive Wikipedia related mail at those addresses. Debresser, you can email me (or any other Wikipedian who has activated email) by going to my user or talk page and clicking on "Email this user" under "Tools" in the left-hand margin. It's also fine if you email me at Stradley Ronon or FundLaw. John M Baker (talk) 18:37, 16 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Two articles from Newslibrary.com (for animated short film)

[edit]

{{Resolved}}

I'm currently in the process of creating an article in my sandbox for an animated short film called Le Building. NewsLibrary.com appears to have two articles of use: "Cool 2 Know the List", published by Newsday on January 11, 2006 and "Animation fest bigger, better than ever at 30", published by The News-Gazette, published on October 1, 2006. These articles may or may not actually mention the film itself by name, but should at the very least mention the film's directors ( Marco Nguyen, Pierre Perifel, Xavier Ramonède, Olivier Staphylas, and Rémi Zaarour) Could someone pass these along to me? Life magazine article

[edit]

{{Resolved}} The article for the U.S. National Video Game Team lists an alleged (January 1983) Life magazine article about the organization written by Drew Greenland. this is apparently the article, however I can't find any other indication online that the article actually existed. --Prisencolin (talk) 06:32, 11 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Prisencolin: There is a photo that matches the description given on twingalaxies.com in: "Video Game V.I.P.s". Life. Vol. 6, no. 1. January 1983. pp. 72–73. It is accompanied by 245 words of text, a short caption, and ten captioned photos of individual players. The article pre-dates the team, and supports none of the content of U.S. National Video Game Team, but does mention Twin Galaxies Arcade, Walter Day, and Billy Mitchell. The posting on twingalaxies.com doesn't quote the first sentence of the Life article accurately, but it's close. The actual text is: "It has become a $5.7 billion industry, and Ottumwa, Iowa (pop. 27,381), a town 85 miles southeast of Des Moines, is the unlikely video game capital of the world." I can send you the text if you want, but it's hard to see how it could be of any use in the team article. --Worldbruce (talk) 05:37, 14 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Is the rest of the article correct then? If it is I guess I don't need the article, seeing as it's already accessible online. Thanks for your help though.--Prisencolin (talk) 06:17, 14 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Prisencolin Sorry, I guess I didn't make myself clear. The twingalaxies.com page is not the Life magazine article. It only quotes the first sentence of Life, and it muffs the dollar value. Twingalaxies.com claims to describe the background behind the making of the photograph in Life. There certainly is such a photo, and the story is plausible, but whether it is true or not is anybody's guess. I would treat it as a self-published source. As for the Life magazine article, it has a little bit about Walter Day, founder of Twin Galaxies Arcade, and shows that Bill Mitchell was one of the sixteen players photographed together in Ottumwa, but it doesn't even prove Day and Mitchell met each other. It certainly isn't an article about the team (which, if Wikipedia is correct, didn't come into being until 7-9 months later). --Worldbruce (talk) 08:18, 14 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, sorry about the misunderstanding. Well in that case yes, can you send me the real Life article then? I read the article on the twin galaxies website again, at the article it does say that it is a piece about Drew Greenberg's trip to Ottumwa to do research on the Life magazine article, so they're not entirely trying to fool anyone into thinking it was the actual article.--Prisencolin (talk) 16:41, 14 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wonder why it doesn't appear in the Guardian Archive site or actually on the main site where I eventually got to 23rd Jan 2003 but it only shows a physicist who passed nuclear secrets to the soviets https://www.theguardian.com/tone/obituaries?page=504 I guess I'll assume they failed to digitise/archive every single obituary. Thanks again. Eversync (talk) 16:16, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Their website says that some articles were not included because of copyright issues. I don't know why that would be a problem for the Guardian's own database, but not for Newsbank. John M Baker (talk) 18:27, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes strange. Btw any chance Newsbank uses a permanent-type URL for that record, to include in the citation here as a validator, even though not everyone could access it? Eversync (talk) 20:27, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like the URL would be http://infoweb.newsbank.com/resources/doc/nb/news/0F8C4D8224FB8550?p=WORLDNEWS. I access through a library proxy, so I can't verify that myself, but that's included in the APA citation that Newsbank provides. John M Baker (talk) 20:54, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks: Caroline Eliza Richardson (same person) seems shrounded in ambiguities, and this couple of pages may help. Or confuse more, which is just as good. --Tagishsimon (talk) 04:22, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Boardwatch Magazine, Amateur Action BBS

[edit]
@Dsprc: Few libraries have issues before 1999, from which point electronic versions are widely available. Only five have print copies from as far back as 1993: Library of Congress, Cornell University, Clemson University, University of Virginia, and Harry Ransom Center. Your best bet may be to reach out directly to active Wikipedians who have declared a connection with one of those sites. At Cornell, for example, perhaps Cornellrockey or EVDiam would be willing to help. --Worldbruce (talk) 06:44, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Worldbruce: Thanks. How does one find which institutions maintain archives? As an aside: I know Jason Scott of the Internet Archive are in physical possession of every issue and edition but they've yet to be digitised and are sitting stacked in a cargo container. -- dsprc [talk] 09:35, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Dsprc: Worldcat.org is the most common starting point. Coverage of boutique libraries (genealogical, museum, philatelic, etc.) and those in developing countries (like India) is spotty, but for most searches it's invaluable. After that it's donkey work. To discover precisely which issues of a journal a particular library holds, one usually has to visit each individual catalog. --Worldbruce (talk) 13:13, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Dsprc, you might want to utilize Artrieve.com. It is a pay-service, but if the item is a must-have, it may be worth it. They have access to the Library of Congress, etc. (I learned about them from a Wikipedia user, and used them to obtain an obscure 1980 newspaper article I had been needing for many years.) The East India kalendar, or, Asiatic register (1800)

[edit]

{{resolved}} This is a very long-shot, I think. I now want The East India kalendar, or, Asiatic register (1800), p.172, for Caroline Eliza Richardson. It is in the same series as [7], and should not be confused with the Asiatic Annual Register. I can't find it on google, nor archive.org, nor Hathi. It may have an important bearing on our understanding of a) the correct name of Mrs. Richardson, and b) the date on which she travelled to India, both of which are open to some doubt. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 05:32, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Tagishsimon: Believe it or not, I do have online access to "The east India Kalendar; or, Asiatic register for Bengal, Madras, Bombay, Fort Marlborough, China, and St. Helena. For the Year 1800. on a more extensive plan than any hitherto offered to the public. Containing Complete and Correct lists of the Company's Civil Military, Marine, Law, and Revenue Establishments: Public Offices: Bankers: Greek, Armenian, Mogul, and Portuguese Merchants; Company's Agents at Home and Abroad: with A Correct list of British European Subjects residing in India, not in Company's Service, &c.,&c.,&c.", 182 pages, a digitized version of a copy held at the British Libraries.
Page 172 is part of "A List of Europeans not in the Service of the East India Company, but residing under their Protection, at Bombay and its Subordinates, or employed in Merchant Vessels belonging to the Port." The last name on the page is indeed "Richardfon Gilbert Geddes, mariner," (although the "Geddes" is indistinct; it looks like "Ci dd s") and the first name on p. 173 is "Richardfon, James Douglas, coroner and fcavenger".
I can't provide pdfs at the moment, as the site is semi-broken and I can only navigate by changing the &pageIndex= parameter in the url directly. If anyone else wants to try, it's ESTC Number T032395 or Gale Document Number CW125886315 through GALE CENGAGE Learning's Eighteenth Century Collections Online database. FourViolas (talk) 13:33, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, FourViolas. That's very kind & good work, and I very much appreciate it. Drop the 1784 trade directory line: our subject would have been 7-years old. And I think you may have answered what can be answered from the Kalendar ... we now know what p.172 is showing, which is to do with Gilbert Geddes and not to do with Catherine Richardson. There were two questions to be answered: 1. was our subject called Caroline or Catherine. I think that's now decided as Catherine. 2. Did our subject really travel to India in 1799, meet and get married by end April? ODNB says so; I'm not convinced & think she may have travelled at an earlier age. I had hoped the Kalendar might show us a 'list of Brits new to india arriving in this year' ... now we know it is not doing so.
Do you have access to the Asiatic Journal, 23 (1827), pp. 887–9 ... I'd like to know what the ODNB found in that. Richardson was back in the UK, Gilbert was long dead, no book had being published by Catherine. I'm presuming it'll be something about David Lester Richardson and his furlough to the UK. The outstanding question there is, what is his relationship to Catherine. Son? Nephew? I don't think the source will help, but you never know. --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:10, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That one's free on GB, and a Richardson and a Mrs. Richardson both departed from Bengal on the Robarts. FourViolas (talk) 19:38, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. (Sorry; I'm a bit fried at this end...). So, Mrs. Richardson and Master Richardson ... that's not very helpful. Her kids had to be born by 1805/6, so the youngest would be say 21, and would not be listed amongst the Masters; and her direct India connection appears to end with her (undated) return after the 1805 death of Gilbert. Thus: very unclear a) who these Richardsons are and b) why ODNB reference the pages. Rhetorical question: are there passanger lists anywhere that throw light on Catherine Richardson travelling to India in or before 1799, and travelling back from 1805 onwards? The Asiatic Journal started in 1816 [8] so it's no help. Volume 1 of the Asiatic Annual Register lists the marriage p.177. ODNB lists Lloyds Shipping Lists, and I presume this is from where they've gleaned her movements. I'll mark this thread as done within 24 hours ... I think I may have taken up more than my fair share of Resource Request time and we probably should all move on to the next Woman in Red biography. It's really cheering to find people who'll dig out sources as you've done: very many thanks. --Tagishsimon (talk) 20:11, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

1936 Guardian article: from Guardian digital archive or ProQuest archiver

[edit]

{{Stale}} I'd like to improve Catherine Winkworth. Two sources would be useful:

"PECCAVI": A Good Story Killed, The Manchester Guardian, 14 February 1936.

and

issue 31 of the Gaskell Society newsletter. March 2001. Skrine, Peter. ‘Peccavi.’ [Catherine Winkworth; R.H. Watts. Gaskell Memorial Tower, Knutsford]. [illus.] p7-9.

Thanks. -- Carbon Caryatid (talk) 12:40, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The Gaskell Society says, "If you wish to obtain a back copy of a Newsletter, or a copy of an article, please use the “Contact Us” form with your email address and we will advise on availability and cost." There is a good chance that they would supply a scan of the article free to help Wikipedia. John M Baker (talk) 22:33, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Carbon Caryatid:For the Guardian article -- This is on Page 6 (1 page), if you can find a paper archive. You can find it here in the digital archive of The Guardian (previously known as The Manchester Guardian). Based on Ulrich's info it appears to me that only the Guardian's digital archive will go back to 1936.Jodi.a.schneider (talk) 17:42, 10 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks both! I'll approach the Gaskell Society. Does anyone have access to the Guardian's digital archive? Carbon Caryatid (talk) 17:52, 10 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Carbon Caryatid: It's available on Proquest archiver, which I don't have access to. Hopefully someone else does. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 19:54, 10 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Carbon Caryatid, are you still looking for this? I see you have already cited it in the wiki article; are you still nonetheless looking for a copy of it? Softlavender (talk) 11:49, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for reminding me of this quest, which had slipped off my radar. If I used it in our article, that must have been from a Google snippet view. Yes please I would like to read the whole thing. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 20:43, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Finding source in 1932 issue of Paradise of the Pacific

[edit]

{{Stale}} Can anybody help me find the exact page numbers, author and section/article of this part of the Paradise of the Pacific along with a pdf copy of the relevant pages?

--KAVEBEAR (talk) 23:23, 20 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • KAVEBEAR, since no one has replied, I would just cite the page number, and provide the snippet view as the hyperlink. If the only info you are citing is that tiny mention, you don't need article title and author for proof (and you don't have to use the codes to create a citation). (PS: I added to the section header here for clarification). Unfortunately I'm not sure you are going to get any further help on this RX page. Softlavender (talk) 10:32, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It is not a problem of citation. I want to read the entire article as well. Hopefully someone out there may have access to this in a nearby library or has interlibrary loan options.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 00:55, 27 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sciences et Avenir issue 147 (2006)

[edit]

Hi RX,

I'm looking for an issue of French popular science magazine Sciences et Avenir, issue 147 (2006): "Les Fictions de la Science". The whole issue is of interest, but particularly Stéphane Hergueta's article "Les rhinogrades" (or possibly "Rhinogradentia"). It's to use in the article Rhinogradentia. I can't actually read French very well, which makes searching difficult. Best I've found is an ebay listing, which I might end up going for. I need access to a few publications of the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America hidden behind paywalls

[edit]

{{resolved}} If you can get me access to even one of these, I would appreciate it. Most of them are behind paywalls, and it makes it a major hassle to find information pertaining to the earthquake history of Oklahoma as a result. If at all possible, I would like access to this publication from the BSSA. I would also like access to a publication called "A century of induced earthquakes in Oklahoma?" which is behind another paywall despite containing research of USGS scientists. Lastly, I would like to see the the second page of this work of the Oklahoma City Geological Society. There are some other pages I would like access to as well, but I don't want to make too many requests at once, so if necessary, I will ask about those later. The articles I am working to improve include 2009–16 Oklahoma earthquake swarms and Draft:List of earthquakes in Oklahoma among others. I am not even sure how useful these sources would be to me were I granted access, but it is impossible for me to know without seeing them first. Dustin (talk) 20:08, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
