    Requests for permissions

This page enables administrators to handle requests for permissions on the English Wikipedia. Administrators are able to modify account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, file mover, extended confirmed, mass message sender, new page reviewer, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback, and template editor rights, and AutoWikiBrowser access.

Editors wishing to request a permission flag here should do so following the procedure below. Editors requesting permissions are advised to periodically revisit the requests page, as notifications will not always be given after a decision is made. Editors should not expect their request to be answered right away and should remember to be patient when filing a request. To find out what permissions your account has, go to Special:Preferences, where your permissions are listed in the user profile tab under "Member of groups".

Requests for permissions are archived regularly; please see Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Archive for an index of past requests.

    Permissions

    Handled here

    • Account creator (add request · view requests): The account creator flag is granted to users who are active in the request an account process. The flag removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24 hour period. It also allows users to make accounts with names similar to other accounts. The account creator flag is only given to users who participate in the ACC process and may be removed without notice should a user's participation in the account creation process cease.
    • Autopatrolled (add request · view requests): The autopatrolled flag is granted to users who are active in the creation of new articles. This tool is granted so their creations are auto patrolled in Special:NewPages. Unlike other requests, any user may nominate an editor for Autopatrolled, even without that user's consent. A user who wishes to have this flag generally should have created at least 25 articles and must be trusted, experienced, and must have demonstrated they are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, especially WP:BLP and Wikipedia:Notability.
    • AutoWikiBrowser (add request · view requests): AutoWikiBrowser is a semi-automated MediaWiki editor for Microsoft Windows, designed to make tedious repetitive tasks quicker and easier. It is essentially a browser that automatically opens up a new page when the last is saved. When set to do so, it suggests some changes (typically formatting) that are generally meant to be incidental to the main change. Please read the rules of use and registration requirements on the main page before requesting permission. This is not a true user right, but access needs to be granted by administrators just like other permissions. If approved, your name will be added to the CheckPage. Users with under 250 non-automated mainspace edits or 500 total mainspace edits are rarely approved. You will need to give a reason for wanting AWB access.
    • Confirmed (add request · view requests): The confirmed flag may be granted to new users who have not yet hit the threshold for autoconfirmed status. These are users who have not had both 10 edits and 4 days experience. People with this flag can upload files and edit semi-protected pages before hitting the autoconfirmed flag. Users requesting this flag must indicate clearly why they should be exempted from the customary confirmation period.
    • Event coordinator (add request · view requests): The event coordinator user right allows editors to create multiple new accounts, and to temporarily confirm accounts so that they can create new articles.
    • Extended confirmed (add request · view requests): The extended confirmed flag is normally automatically added to accounts after 500 edits and 30 days, but may be added to legitimate alternate accounts of users that already have this access. The flag allows users to edit pages under extended confirmed protection.
    • File mover (add request · view requests): The file mover user right is intended to allow users experienced in working with files to rename them, subject to policy, with the ease that autoconfirmed users already enjoy when renaming Wikipedia articles.
    • Mass message sender (add request · view requests): Mass message sender enables users to send messages to multiple users at once. This flag is given to users who have made requests for delivery in the past, clearly showing an understanding of the guidance for use.
    • New page reviewer (add request · view requests): The new page reviewer user right allows users to mark pages as patrolled and use the page curation toolbar. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
    • Page mover (add request · view requests): The page mover user right allows users experienced in working with article names to move them, subject to policy, without leaving behind a redirect. They may also move all subpages when moving the parent page(s). General guidelines include making 3,000 edits and 6 months of editing history. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
    • Pending changes reviewer (add request · view requests): The reviewer flag is granted to users who are experienced enough with Wikipedia editing and its policies for contributing to the process of reviewing articles placed under pending changes.
    • Rollback (add request · view requests): Rollback enables users to remove vandalism much more quickly and efficiently than by undoing it. Users who do not demonstrate an understanding of what constitutes capable vandalism fighting, either because they have no or little history of doing so, or show a poor ability to discern between good and bad faith edits will not be granted this right. Also, it is unlikely that editors with under 200 mainspace edits will have their request granted. For a more detailed explanation of rollback and information about when it is appropriate to use the tool, see Wikipedia:Rollback. For information about the technical details of the feature, see here.
    • Template editor (add request · view requests): The template editor flag allows users to edit protected templates and Lua modules. General guidelines for granting include making at least 1,000 edits overall (with at least 150 to templates or modules), being a registered user for over a year, and having a record of successfully proposing significant edits to several protected templates. Users should demonstrate proficiency with template syntax and an understanding of the need for caution when editing heavily-used templates.

    Handled elsewhere

Several permissions are requested and handled elsewhere:

    Removal of permissions

If you wish to have any of your permission flags (except administrator) removed, you should contact an administrator. If you want your administrator flag removed, you should contact a bureaucrat.

This is not the place to request review of another user's rights. If you believe someone's actions merit removal of a permission flag, you should raise your concern at the incidents noticeboard.

The bureaucrat, checkuser, and oversight flags are removed at meta:Steward requests/Permissions. Stewards will typically not carry out such requests unless they are made on behalf of the Arbitration Committee, by a user who is requesting their own access be removed, or in cases of an emergency.

    Process

    Requestors

To make a request for a permission, click "add request" next to the appropriate header and fill in the reason for wanting permission.

Any editor may comment on requests for permission.

    Administrators

Administrators are permitted to grant account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, event coordinator, file mover, mass message sender, new page reviewer, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback and template editor flags to any user who meets the criteria explained above and can be trusted not to abuse the tool(s). Administrators may either grant these permissions permanently or temporarily. For convenience, a bot will automatically comment with relevant data if the user does not meet configurable qualifications. Even if the bot does not comment, administrators should review the user's contributions and logs to ensure the tools will be used appropriately and check for any indication of potential misuse.

Once an administrator has granted a permission or decided to deny a request, they should add {{done}} or {{not done}} respectively under the request with their comments. If a user already has the requested permission, or is autoconfirmed and requesting confirmed, {{already done}} should be used. N hours after the last comment was made (as specified by the config), the request will be archived automatically: approved requests will be placed here; declined requests will go here. See User:MusikBot/PermClerk#Archiving for more information on archiving functionality.

    Other editors

Requests for permissions is primarily intended for editors requesting a permission for their own account. Other editors are welcome to comment if they have specific information that is relevant to that request that a patrolling administrator is unlikely to discover for themselves. Otherwise, since only administrators can effectively respond to these requests, general comments or 'clerking' by other users are rarely helpful. Non-administrators cannot "decline" to grant a request, because they're not in a position to accept it.

A limited exception to this is Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Autopatrolled, where third party nominations are encouraged. Other editors should still avoid offering general remarks on requests and leave the final decision to an administrator.

    Autopatrolled

Meets the minimum criteria, and a random sampling of their creations doesn't raise any red flags. My only concern is their liberal use of quotations in reception sections, but I don't consider it an overly serious issue for this permission as the copyright reports come away otherwise clean; I've also started a discussion on their talk page about it. Dear Wikipedia Admins, I am requesting the Autopatrolled right to further support my contributions to Wikipedia. While I may not have thousands of edits or article creations, my work is rooted in careful research and learning from experienced editors. My focus is on Iranian early modern, modern, and contemporary art and culture, especially highlighting the stories of Iranian women often overlooked in history. I ensure all my edits are supported by reliable, academic sources, and I have a track record of accurate contributions with very few reverts. I believe that having the Autopatrolled right would allow me to continue enhancing the articles related to Iran and Iranian art and culture. Thank you for your consideration.      Comment: @SafariScribe: I'm a little puzzled here, I randomly picked like seven articles from your recent creations, and they were all dab pages, which generally aren't really considered when evaluating these requests. Could you maybe provide some examples of fairly recent content creations? Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 23:56, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done I think you are generally doing a good job getting articles started, but in pretty much every one of the articles you linked, I also see others coming along and fixing them up, correcting language/grammar/etc, and in one case a copyvio that had to be revision deleted. So, while it is great that you are expanding the project with new content, I think your creations would continue to benefit from being reviewed by others. I have created 247 articles on English Wikipedia, covering a variety of subjects. I am currently a New Page Patroller and actively participate in Articles for Creation (AfC) and Articles for Deletion (AfD). I also enjoy turning the red links of notable recent deaths into blue, and I believe this right will help to reduce the workload at New Page Patrol (NPP). Thank you. Hi, I have created 25 articles by 2021, none of which has been deleted. Recently, I created another 3 articles, and in total I have made 3200 edits (none of which has been deleted). These articles and edits are primarily about modern Chinese history, which I am familiar with. And I just realized I may have been qualified for the "auto-patrol" right for a long time, but never asked for it. Therefore, I'd like to ask to become an auto-patroller which hopefully will also save some work for the new page patrollers in the future. Thank you very much. Hello, I’m requesting Autopatrolled rights to help reduce the New Pages Patrol workload. I focus on classical Greek topics and have translated many pages from the Greek Wikipedia, having created over 50 pages so far.      Done, I see there were some issues with copyright and sourcing when you started editing, but they haven't reoccurred recently. – Joe (talk) 13:01, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have returned to editing after a looooong wikibreak (life happens). Before that I was a reasonably active user in good standing for a couple of years and created quite a few articles only one of which was deleted (while I was on wikibreak so not around to add the additional sourcing, from specialist publications, that it needed to confirm notability).

I'm in the process of updating many out-of-date articles about carnivorous plants, including filling in large gaps in the taxonomy, so I have well over 100 new pages on my to-do list. To reduce the burden on NPP, I'd like to request autopatrolled before I start churning through those please. YFB ¿ 16:14, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request withdrawn On second thoughts, I have the sense I'm about to receive some patronising / demotivating comments, so I won't trouble you all further. YFB ¿ 20:48, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(oh, edit conflict proved me correct)

Well, that's been a wikibreak of extraordinary length. Welcome back! As you will appreciate, Wikipedia has moved on in the 17 intervening years. I've had a look at the nine articles that you have produced since you've become active again. The expectation is that articles by autopatrolled editors are clean and don't need attention by others. However, that's not the case for the stubs that you produce, with recurrent issues being lack of categories, tagging for single source or orphan status, DEFAULTSORT missing for bios, and a variety of WP:MOS issues. I suggest that you keep a close eye on how other editors tweak your articles and if you take all those things on board, your articles will be clean enough for becoming autopatrolled in no time.  Not done for the bot. Keep up your good work! Schwede66 20:41, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I hope that you don't perceive the words above as patronising, Yummifruitbat. Schwede66 21:03, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Respectfully, yes I do. The combination of the manner of your review of my contributions, the edit summaries you used, and the points you chose to pick up on (dashes and subtleties of date formatting; missing linebreak before stub tag; an incorrect accusation of including an unsourced DoB in a BLP where the date was actually ref'd but the ref wasn't repeated directly alongside the date; downgrading another reviewer's assessment from 'Start' to 'Stub') led me to decide to withdraw my nomination as I already felt patronised and demotivated. You replied to my query on your talk page (about the DoB comment) in a way that implied I might not be able to figure out why you, an Admin active on this backlog, were suddenly reviewing my recent contributions. Your comment here reads as though my additions have been borderline worthless. 'The stubs you create', 'recurrent issues', 'lack of categories', 'tagging for single source or orphan status' (the latter both transient one-offs). My understanding was that NPP was supposed to catch and address articles with major issues - BLP problems, serious POV/COI, GNG, WP:NOT, vandalism - not trivial issues of formatting? Perhaps I had the wrong end of the stick. Either way, the net effect is that I feel pretty bitten / tag-bombed and strongly regret placing a request here. YFB ¿ 22:16, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry to hear that you feel like this, Yummifruitbat. However, I have to respond to those accusations:
    • combination of the manner of your review of my contributions – I've reviewed all of your articles created since you became active again last year. What is wrong with that?
    • the edit summaries you used – when I review editor contributions for autopatrolled, I try to be clear and informative so that it's helpful to the editor going forward. Which edit summary or summaries did not sit right with you?
    • the points you chose to pick up on (dashes and subtleties of date formatting – whenever I review an article, I run a couple of scripts that fix dashes and date formats. You may notice that I have not commented on dashes or date formats above, and in fact, I don't think I ever have as part of a review. I do not consider that relevant to autopatrolled flags.
    • missing linebreak before stub tag – that's something that's useful to know; it wasn't like that 17 years ago. Are you suggesting that you don't want to know when you are editing outside of what MOS prescribes?
    • an incorrect accusation of including an unsourced DoB in a BLP where the date was actually ref'd but the ref wasn't repeated directly alongside the date – thank you for posting about that on my talk page. I acknowledged that I did misunderstand that and proposed a way to resolve this. Isn't that normal editor interaction?
    • downgrading another reviewer's assessment from 'Start' to 'Stub' – I downgraded the assessment because it was wrong; Andreas Fleischmann is a stub and very far from being start class.
    • tag-bombed – I didn't place a single tag, so how can you possibly feel "tag-bombed"?
As I said before, what we are looking for at autopatrolled is editors who can consistently produce clean articles that don't need attention by others. If you have further thoughts on my responses, please don't hesitate to bring them up. Schwede66 00:24, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I won't leave a long reply here as it doesn't seem appropriate to clog up this page. I recognise and accept that you have not intentionally patronised me, and to be clear I'm not accusing you of anything (apart from the DoB thing which we have discussed and resolved). What I've intended to describe above is the impression that your approach to the review gave me as a returning editor - and it did give that impression, whether or not you intended it, otherwise I wouldn't have been in the middle of withdrawing my request when you posted your response. I will explain more fully on your talk page. YFB ¿ 01:29, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to get this right to delete unnecessary redirects (i.e. move pages over existing single revision redirects regardless of target). Additionally, I would also like to try to harmonize some pages of Spanish municipalities with the name of the country and the province (when necessary) instead of other subnational units (such as comarca). Moreover if a double denomination exists in some cases, I shall use the slash with spaces in between to enhance visual effect of different linguistic nomenclatures. However if an English form is more relevant I shall use it instead of double and local denominations. Other than that I could help elsewhere to move pages if necessary. Thank you, Nuvolet (talk)

A reasonable number of moves, but I not seeing any WP:RM/TR requests and am concerned by this RM which – based on the previous RM – seemed doomed to fail in the first place. This discussion also looks to be going against you. Primefac (talk) 18:05, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I only can say I'll be responsible if you grant me this right. I can participate in more TM, I just need to get usedd.to them. Yes it failed however I understood the norms and moved similar articles to Countryname. I opposed to Anatolian plateau because there are other geographical units that use capitalization in similar contexts. — Jɑuмe (dis-me) 01:14, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Pending changes reviewer

I've been doing RC Patrolling (as a part of Anti-Vandalism) on Wikipedia for a while now, and I think that having the Pending Changes reviewer permission could be a good idea - there have been numerous instances involving a pending changes edit that I look at while looking through Special:RecentChanges that i wanted to accept/deny/etc, and i feel that this permission would be beneficial for my efficeincy. DM5Pedia 04:34, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I believe that I'd be a good Pending Changes Reviewer, as I have a good amount of time on my hands, and can do monotonous tasks, like denying obvious vandalism, and the like. I meet, what I believe are all the requirements for this right, and humbly ask to receive this privilege. Thanks in advance! Legendbird (talk) 09:06, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reason for requesting pending changes reviewer rights: I am an Wikipedian for more than three years and part of various wikiprojects I need permission to expand my works on Wikipedia and also to observe Wikipedia articles. Cactinites (talk) 15:28, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

To review pending changes on Wikipedia Gonzafer001 (talk) 09:16, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reason for requesting pending changes reviewer rights: I have been a wikipedia editor for some time now and love to revert vandalism and unconstructive edits to prevent the spread of problems on wikipedia. I currently am a Recent Changes patrol and love my job! I have successfully achieved 1000 total edits (or ~ 325 mainspace edits) on the english wikipedia. I can't wait to be a pending changes reviewer, as it will allow me to stop the spread of vandalism even farther! Thanks, Cooldudeseven7 (Cheers! Let's Discuss over a cup of tea!)      Not done for the same reason I declined OP's request for rollback. -Fastily 23:10, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I’d like to request pending changes reviewer rights. I have been active on Wikipedia for a while, focusing on improving content quality and helping maintain the integrity of articles. I am not new to reviewing edits, as I use edit-request tools to answer several requests by unregistered/registered editors that wish to see changes on several articles. I have read all policies on how to handle this right and know the responsibly that comes alongside it. 𝚈𝚘𝚟𝚝 (𝚝𝚊𝚕𝚔𝚟𝚝) 16:12, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Rollback

Reason for requesting rollback rights: I have done TWO rollback rights request, and I am happy to say that I have surpassed 200 mainspace edits and have also surpassed 1 month of Recent Changes Patrolling.I love the ability to help, and I already love to prevent vandalism with the help of Ultraviolet and Twinkle. I am ready to join the rollbacker force to get access to more tools, like AntiVandal and Huggle for even faster response. Don't worry, I won't bite the newcomers unless necessary! Could you please comment on this edit and subsequent warning from @Oblivy. Why did you make this edit and do you believe it was appropriate for Oblivy to warn you? -Fastily 05:26, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was a beginner at the time and I did not think that I would have to read the diffs for an edit that causes the word "its" to change to "it's." I really think that it was important for Oblivy to warn me, as it teaches me to never just blatantly use find and replace. Thanks, Cooldudeseven7 (Cheers! Let's Discuss over a cup of tea!) Celebrating 1000 Edits! 01:29, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For what it’s worth the rapid fire use of find and replace gave me some concerns. I did look through their edits and this seemed to be a one-off, and the immediate acceptance of responsibility and efforts to resolve are praiseworthy. OTOH automated tools in the wrong hands can cause a lot of havoc in a hurry… Oblivy (talk) 09:12, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I did not mean to cause any harm back then and I now decided that reading diffs is important and you cant just do a repetitive shortcut to find and replace on articles. Thanks, Cooldudeseven7 (Cheers! Let's Discuss over a cup of tea!) Celebrating 1000 Edits! 17:30, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey! This is Cooldudeseven7 again, and i'm just asking if there is any progress on this Rollback case? Thanks, Cooldudeseven7 (Cheers! Let's Discuss over a cup of tea!) Celebrating 1000 Edits! 11:15, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've randomly sampled your recent edits and I'm seeing an unacceptably high number of serious mistakes. In addition to the error above, I found:
    1. Here, you offered poor advice and almost inappropriately moved the page to userspace. Pages like this are not acceptable on Wikipedia, even in the userspace.
    2. Editors may remove warnings from their talk pages at any time, meaning this revert followed by these warnings (1, 2) and subsequent AIV report are extremely inappropriate
    3. I'm not sure why you felt the need to insert a {{Static IP}} template here. Not a helpful edit. Also worth noting that this doesn't belong in a section header, which breaks the page formatting.
I think you need to spend a few months learning how Wikipedia works (i.e. quit RC Patrol for now and go make article contributions instead) before applying for advanced permissions. To be clear, RC patrol isn't a race to see who can revert the most edits, so please don't treat it as such. Closing as  Not done. -Fastily 23:08, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but am I not allowed to ever submit again because of these or are you just saying wait a bit? Cooldudeseven7 tea talk 00:16, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You can resubmit at a later time. I would recommend waiting a good amount of time, addressing comments left above, and making sure you are ready and qualified. You may also want to consider WP:CVSCHOOL, after addressing the feedback above. (Non-administrator comment) Sincerely, Guessitsavis (she/they) (Talk) 13:14, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(Trying this again because one of my scripts broke the template)

I have been reverting vandalism and patrolling recent changes for over a month now. The last time my request was declined, I simply hadn't been patrolling for a month at that point, and @Fastily had no other objections. I have consistently warned all vandals I reverted and reported many to AIV. I believe I'm ready to have rollback now. Also note that I am a pending changes reviewer. I see that you are failing to consistently warn editors when you revert their edits (e.g. 1, 2, 3). Why? It's important to leave a notification for every revert you make (especially when reverting good faith edits). Are you aware of tools such as Twinkle or Ultraviolet which make this extremely easy? -Fastily 23:53, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @Fastily Diff by diff:
    1. Completely forgot that there is a warning template for NOTFORUM. The last time I used that warning was all the way on Sept 13 [7] which is more than a month ago. Completely skipped my mind.
    2. I have no explanation on this one; I probably just forgot.
    3. No explanation either.
The earlier failures seem to be one off mistakes I made that happen to be close together, but the revert that happened just today is definitely very unfortunate for me not to warn. The sea of reverts I've made mostly have warnings other than the above, so I don't exactly know how I managed to forget to warn at all. I'll make sure this doesn't happen again. TheWikiToby (talk) 01:10, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have been engaging in recent changes patrolling for some time now, so I'd like to request rollback permission primarily to be able to use tools, so that I can patrol more quickly and efficiently. Thanks. From AS-RNY (talk) 14:57, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    No I'm 500+ edits From AS-RNY (talk) 15:08, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@From AS-RNY 415 of your 500+ edits are actually from the user namespace. You have 110 edits in the mainspace which is actual articles. TheWikiToby (talk) 16:48, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not done. Please see the notice at the top of this page. With only 110 edits to the mainspace, I don't think you have sufficient editing experience yet. Take a moment to check out what counter-vandalism is at WP:CVU, and if you decide you'd like to get involved, you can enroll at the Counter Vandalism Academy to learn more. Of your ~500 edits, 415 are to the user space as User:TheWikiToby noted above, and of those user namespace edits, 399 were to User:From AS-RNY/sandbox. Most of these sandbox edits consist of adding the word hello at a rate of several edits per minute until obtaining WP:XC status, which appears to be a WP:PGAME issue. @From AS-RNY: I think it's best to remove the extended confirmed permission until you have enough experience editing outside of your sandbox before editing in potentially contentious areas that are XC protected. Aoidh (talk) 17:07, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Noting here that I've removed XC from User:From AS-RNY per my comment on their talk page. - Aoidh (talk) 17:22, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reason for requesting rollback rights: I have experienced myself with editing on Wikipedia and undoing vandalism on Wikipedia, and I think I am ready to undo vandalism the easy way. If anyone could reach out to me so we can get this settled and I can have my rights, then that would be great. Thanks! - Bigeditingideas (talk) 23:18, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done I reviewed your contributions and found little to no recent anti-vandalism work. If you're still interested in this tool then please spend at least a month actively patrolling RecentChanges (Twinkle & Ultraviolet can help with that) before reapplying. Also, please ensure that you are consistently warning editors when you revert their edits. Thanks, Fastily 23:53, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I've been patrolling Special:RecentChanges for vandalism, and I sometimes encounter editors who rapidly vandalize many dozens of pages before being blocked. In these cases, I don't need to check each diff before reverting it, so I'm requesting rollback to more efficiently handle them. I am also interested in the tools that require rollback, such as Huggle. jlwoodwa (talk) 23:19, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
