Deleting an Entry

[edit]

Hi,

My roommate used my computer to edit a page on wikipedia, but used the anonymous function which reveals your IP address. I have anxiety surrounding the internet, and would like to delete the entry with my IP address from Wikipedia. My roommate tried to do this, but couldn't figure it out. Could you advise us on how to do this?

Thanks,

Chelsea ChelseaG22 (talk) 01:52, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@ChelseaG22: You may be able to get Wikipedia:Oversight to help you. Contact them via email at oversight-en-wp@wikipedia.org and tell them which page the IP address edited. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 02:52, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Removal

[edit]

Can I stop having this site in my search engine? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:8805:A986:5200:9995:40:111D:7812 (talk) 06:34, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You would have to ask your preferred search engine. I suspect there is likely some way to do that, but I don't know what it is. 331dot (talk) 07:22, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Simply include -wikipedia (with the minus sign) with your search terms. Whether you can set that as the default depends on your chosen search engine. Shantavira|feed me 09:03, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you mean that your browser has a search feature which only searches Wikipedia instead of searching the Internet with an external search engine like Google then tell us the browser. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:38, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I am sure there is some way to do it but Wikipedia is one of the most viewed websites, so if you cannot remove this from what you are searching then... well... you've got yourself a problem. 𝙷𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚘𝚑𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚝 (𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔) 22:49, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

adding Wiki English to an existing Hebrew page

[edit]

Hello! I created an item/ page about an Israeli artist, Maya Gelfman, in Wiki Hebrew on 8 March. It's published. https://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%9E%D7%90%D7%99%D7%94_%D7%92%D7%9C%D7%A4%D7%9E%D7%9F Maya Gelfman (Q111551235) I translated the text into English and uploaded the text and images on April 20th. Please see here - https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=user:Michalgitnik/Maya_Gelfman&action=edit However, the English translation/ page was never published although I checked the publish button. What to do? What did I miss? Thank you so much!! Michal — Preceding unsigned comment added by Michalgitnik (talkcontribs) 08:18, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Michalgitnik: The "Publish changes" button should be interpreted as "save changes", it does not mean "publish this to the encyclopecdia". The button was renamed this way a couple years ago to remniscent the fact that every edit here on Wikipedia is publicitely viewable, if one knows where to look for. As for User:Michalgitnik/Maya Gelfman, please see Wikipedia:So you made a userspace draft Victor Schmidt (talk) 09:07, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Michalgitnik, this sentence does not cite a published reference: "She strives to reconcile contradictions such as beauty that encompasses crudeness, weakness as a source of strength, the disillusionment that feeds innocence, and passivity that generates intention". Also, I don't understand it. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 10:59, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Adding on, that is something straight out of ad copy and has no place in an encyclopedia using its voice. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 14:36, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! Could you please clarify what did you mean? Here are some references - https://www.mayagelfman.com/curatorial-texts, http://www.itraveltelaviv.com/articles/talking-tel-aviv-street-art-maya-gelfman-pt-1/, http://www.itraveltelaviv.com/articles/talking-tel-aviv-street-art-maya-gelfman-pt-2/ Michalgitnik (talk) 19:40, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The language quoted above is promotional, which is not what Wikipedia is for. The subject should be described from a neutral point of view. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 23:59, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi and thank you! a question - if this sentence will be a quote of the artist will it solve the problem? Thanks !! Michalgitnik (talk) 08:09, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Michalgitnik, as @Tenryuu said, that sentence is marketing-speak. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but it's close to "nonsense". It's like describing wine as "assertive, yet understated. Light, yet dark". Passivity that generates intention? Really? How, exactly, does passivity "generate" intention? Intention arises in a human brain. How does any type of art "reconcile" this supposed contradiction between passivity and intention? All of that verbiage might be seen in a gallery or auction catalog, but it's not appropriate for an encyclopedia. Also, as Tenryuu said, it doesn't fit with neutral point of view. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 09:57, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It absolutely wouldn't solve the problem. A self-referential quote like that would be definitely be promotional beyond any doubt. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 14:15, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Michalgitnik, the entire "Technique and Themes" section is unreferenced except for an interview with the artist, so that entire section will need to be removed. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 11:05, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I have added more references including curatorial texts about Gelfman's works. However, I got this message when I clicked in the publish page - Edit conflict: User:Michalgitnik/Maya Gelfman
Jump to navigationJump to search
Someone else has changed this page since you started editing it, resulting in an edit conflict.
The upper text area contains the page text as it currently exists (without your changes).
Your version of the page (with your changes) is shown in the lower text area.
You will have to merge your changes into the existing text in the upper text area to incorporate your edits. Only the text in the upper text area will be saved when you press "Publish changes"; all other changes in the lower text area will be lost.
Please do not just copy the text from the lower text area into the upper, unless you're sure that you want to undo all other changes made while you were editing this page. Rather, please try to compare the two versions and combine them into one text that preserves both your edits and any improvements made by others.
An easy way to resolve an edit conflict without losing your work is to open another tab in your browser, and edit the page in that tab copying your changes from the section at the bottom of this page. Michalgitnik (talk) 19:36, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The system is telling you that someone else edited in a change while you were working on your change. Perhaps that surprises you, but sometimes other editors will change (improve, presumably) a draft article, even one in your user space. I suggest that you follow the advice in the last section of the system message. ---R. S. Shaw (talk) 23:22, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Correcting information and needing assistance from a mod.

[edit]

I am still extremely new to the Wiki! I have been shared helpful info, but I really need to speak to someone about this question. The main page I wish to help correct info on is the Temple Of The Forbidden eye page. I was able to correct some story elements told of the adventure, but not a lot of it. One of the main things I wish to put on the page is info on a broken system that no one knows about. I have created a video that purely explains this and it educates everyone about it! A mod was going to help but he has decided not to, which is very disappointing. Please be kind and assist me with this if you can. I really would appreciate it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Doge456 (talkcontribs) 09:45, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is it the article Indiana Jones Adventure? Generally speaking, Wikipedia articles are based on reliable secondary sources. A video that you created yourself wouldn't be seen as a suitable source. The best thing to do is to raise concerns on the talk page of the relevant article.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 10:05, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Doge456 Per, among other things, WP:SPS, that's not how WP does it. We can only write about stuff WP:RS already knows about. Get your story on CNN or at least Screen Rant, then we may have something to work with. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:10, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Adding to the above, content like this [1], even if you could source it, sounds at least partly like WP:FANCRUFT to me. Have you considered writing on Fandom? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:17, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have, it seems I need to be apart of something before I can do any editing there. For Indy anyways. The issue with indy is an actual thing that would be awesome to have on the page, I am little saddened that I have to go to this length to have this info be added. But hey, if you would like to learn about it that would make my day. Doge456 (talk) 12:22, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Doge456 I'll say as much as that I'm a big fan of the first 3 movies and the pinball game, and this ride sounds frickin awesome to me, but it's not on my continent. You may find Talk:Ophidiophobia#Indiana_Jones and the sequel Talk:Ophidiophobia#Indiana_Jones_BRRD,_if_anyone_is_interested interesting. Or not, stuff like that is an aquired taste. What is wiki

What is wiki — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.116.71.209 (talk) 13:06, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This is an encyclopedia in which you can look up subjects like wiki by typing in the search box.--Shantavira|feed me 13:09, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I find that WP:5 is the best basic explanation of what this is and how it works. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:46, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you are wondering what Wikipedia is, well, then, in a nutshell it is an open source website for gathering information (or check the article about Wikipedia). If you are wondering what a wiki is then check the article Wiki. 𝙷𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚘𝚑𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚝 (𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔) 22:52, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

how do we put up our wiki info ?

[edit]

How does one go about putting up a wiki page ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.192.134.51 (talk) 15:12, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:FIRST. But if it is about you, your organisation etc it is likely to be deleted unless it is properly sourced and written in a neutral tone.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 15:14, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
We don't have "wiki pages", we have articles, which are typically written by independent editors wholly unconnected with the topic. 331dot (talk) 15:22, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you are wondering how to create a Wikipedia article, you may want to first check if the subject is Notable and if it is, you may want to start of with the Article Wizard first. If what you are talking about is something else then feel free to add more details. 𝙷𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚘𝚑𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚝 (𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔) 22:46, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
