How do I revert vandilism?

[edit]

??? UiawsbdNicoDude (talk) 01:28, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Read WP:VANDALISM. Cullen328 (talk) 01:30, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
thanks UiawsbdNicoDude (talk) 01:35, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
UiawsbdNicoDude, I would recommend using one of WP:REDWARN, WP:TWINKLE, or WP:HUGGLE. They make it much quicker to revert vandalism and warn users. I use Twinkle. Based on your edits, you seem to be learning how Wikipedia works. Thank you for your contributions, however small, readers will thank you years in the future. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 02:10, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@uiawsbdnicodude: you can't use twinkle, you're not autoconfirmed yet, and you can't use huggle, you don't have rollback rights. not sure about redwarn. (cc @sungodtemple) 晚安lettherebedarklight 15:53, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Last I remember, RedWarn limits its full range of features until users become extended-confirmed. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:18, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Circular Redirect?

[edit]

A user added a hatnote to the FOSTA-SESTA article, saying "SESTA" redirects here. For the ancient episcopal see, see Diocese of Sesta. But Diocese of Sesta is itself a redirect to Mauretania_Caesariensis#Episcopal_sees and the Sesta entry on that bullet-list links to Diocese of Sesta.

I'm not well versed in redirects, so maybe the circular nature of all that information isn't really important to Wikipedia functionality. But I wanted to ask about it, since it was so self-looping. CleverTitania (talk) 04:07, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

CleverTitania, I think the redirect is of limited value, but the link in Mauretania_Caesariensis#Episcopal_sees is an interlanguage link to the Italian Wikipedia article it:Diocesi di Sesta as well as the redirect, so the links are not entirely circular. An individual is using Wikipedia articles without attribution for entire YouTube videos. I wrote most of the material in two of the articles used Big Boy Restaurants and Bob's Big Boy, as well as created graphics also used without attribution. He is attributing the videos only to himself. The videos are just the articles run through a text to speech generator. I'm ready to file YouTube copyright strikes and want to know how to coordinate with Wikipedia, without delay. As usual, Wikipedia help pages are belabored and confusing. How do I proceed? Any problems with me filing copyright strikes? βox73 (৳alk) 05:11, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Box73. Please read Wikipedia:Reusing Wikipedia content. Cullen328 (talk) 06:34, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Box73. Unfortunately, I don't think there's really anything to coordinate when it comes to something like this. The copyright over content added to Wikipedia isn't held by the Wikimedia Foundation, except in cases where the content was originally added by the WMF itself as explained in WP:COPY. Individual users such as yourself are going to need to try and enforce your copyright on your own as explained in Wikipedia:Mirrors and forks. You can try emailing or otherwise contacting the WMF about this, but my guess is that it will just respond pretty much the same way. There are some examples of letters that can be sent to websites violating your copyright found at Wikipedia:Standard license violation letter that you might find helpful. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:02, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for explaining that and pointing me in the right direction. — βox73 (৳alk) 08:24, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Leslie. You have contacted the English Wikipedia which is just one of several hundred websites hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. Volunteer English Wikipedia editors have very little to do with the fundraising campaigns which are run by professional fundraisers. You can find out more about how to stop donating here. article revision

[edit]

Hi everyone,

sorry to disturb, I just wanted to have some clarification on the review of the draft. I am not sure how to proceed. I understood there are some problems on the notability of the person, but how do I fix those? I can find many articles talking about the subject, or also interviews. How do I proceed? Do I add them as sources in the article?

Thanks Patlor643 (talk) 08:42, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Patlor. Your draft has 27 references and every one of them is a line item in an entry list or a results list. These are of no value whatsoever in establishing notability. What is required is references to reliable independent sources that provide significant coverage of this person. Lists published by events he has competed are not independent and do not constitute significant coverage. Cullen328 (talk) 08:51, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks for the help, 2 question:
1: a problem would be that the majority of the sourced I can find are in Italian, can they be used?
2: Second question is, when I find the articles, do I just add them to the sources?
Here is anyway some Italian articles that could prove significant coverage of the person. (Yeah, only problem is they are in Italian...)

@Patlor643 Foreign-language sources are OK if there are no equivalent English ones. The guidance is at WP:RSUE. I suspect that many of the ones you have listed here are based on interviews, so are not WP:INDEPENDENT. In getting drafts accepted, we look for quality, not quantity, so you only need about WP:THREE decent sources that possess all of the attributes mentioned by Cullen328. Incidentally, given that Patrese is Italian, I would have expected there to be an article about him in the Italian-language version of Wikipedia but I don;t see one there. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:02, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Please don’t ask the same questions in multiple places, such as both here and at my talk page. If you must, mention it, so that we can check the other place and ensure effort is not duplicated (the advice given above by Mike Turnbull and the one I gave you on my talk page is substantially similar). Section-wise footnotes

[edit]

Country codes: J–K has overall four footnotes for #North Korea, #South Korea and #Kosovo, collected on the bottom of the page. It would be better to have any footnote in the section of each country. This could be achieved by assigning the footnotes of each country to a distinct group and then list that group in the same section. The problem is that the group name will appear in the place of the note and should not be too long and outlandish. "note North Korea", "note South Korea", "note Kosovo" won't really do. Best would be to call it "note" in all places, but it should apply only to the same section. This is impossible - but what would be the best solution? --KnightMove (talk) 11:20, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Would using {{reftalk}} be more useful in this realm? --Jayron32 15:26, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Jayron32: Thank you, that worked out, and on the way I have found the even better suited {{notelist-talk}}. A follow-up question: The dashed frame seems a bit too much in these instances, but this cannot be removed in either template, right? --KnightMove (talk) 07:36, 4 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure. I'm not really good on coding templates myself. --Jayron32 11:54, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Errors

[edit]

There is an ERROR in your information about RAF BENSON's role in WWW2 . I lived on the former PROCESSING SITE of RAF Benson for 52 years and did a lot of research re:WW2 Photo Recce in the UK. THE Photo INTERPRETATION took place NEXT to my site at the OLD MANSION which IS NOT not in the historic village of Ewelme. There is NO SUCH Building called EWELME MANSION Now or in the PAST. I knew ROY NESBIT the author personally who was a WW2 Veteran and have been in touch with author Tony Spooner who knew Adrian Warburton, who was a WW2 Pilot and Hero in his lifetime who was seconded to another RAF Benson base formerly known as Mount Farm where the USAAF had a base themselves headed by Commander Elliot Roosvelt, son of President Roosevelt who had served with Adrian Warburton during the attack at Taranto. .Warburton tok part in the defence of Malta and was considered a Hero there but forgotten in the UK?? Baddegama (talk) 13:31, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for wanting to help improve Wikipedia. It is one of our fundamental policies that all information should be verifiable from reliable published sources: I'm afraid that personal knowledge or recollection isn't accepted unless it is backed up by a published source. If ou have asource for the information, please post on the talk page of the relevant article, citing your source and suggesting what should be changed.
(Also please don't SHOUT at us: using ALL CAPS is regarded as SHOUTING). ColinFine (talk) 13:44, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I am Baddegama and find your instructions EXTREMELY COMPLICATED compared to the past and have noticed Errors often. Some I have contacted have told me that I SHOULD NOT REGARD Wikipedia due to these errors . I have researched Photo Reconnaisance in the UK during WW2 as I lived on a site formerly used by RAF BENSON during WW2 having being born in 1942 and knew British soldiers during those years so have been interested ever since then.I now find that the Correction of Errors is far too complicated and would need a specialists help to do so. I have researched the above subject for many years with the help of Authors regarding the above subject. I have cited Published sources such as author and RAF historian, Roy Nesbit and author and WW2 veteran Tony Spooner Plus EX RAF BENSON serving personnel. What do you mean by Publishded. I have dealt with the EWELNE historian also who is NOT a published author but does research on EWELME village history. I was personally in touch with Author Roy Nesbit who contacted Tony Spooner who were both WW2 Veterans and have Newspaper article of myself and WW2 film I dug up on my property.Several have spotted ERRORS on Wikiepedia so we have now learned NOT to take your histories as 100% accurate. Baddegama (talk) 13:59, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean by Published source? Why dont you ask the Royal Mail if there is such a place called EWELME MANOR or look up Google. Baddegama (talk) 14:01, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
A published source means something like a book, journal, website, newspaper, or other place where anyone can go read the information. Just tell us where we can read about this ourselves. --Jayron32 14:24, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Baddegama If you can provide a source of the type Nesbit, Roy Conyers (25 June 2009). Reported Missing: Lost Airmen of the Second World War. p. 1–224. ISBN 9781781598580. with the relevant page numbers and whichever of Nesbit's many books is the one you wish to use as a source, then you can put it into the Talk Page of the relevant article to back up what you wish to add or change. That's what we mean by "reliably published sources". Mike Turnbull (talk) 20:11, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You said you have newspaper articles that back up your assertions. In order to cite a newspaper article, you should provide the following information about the article: Name of author, date of publication, title of article, name of newspaper. That allows other people to look up the article and verify that it says what Wikipedia says it says. If you have read a book by Roy Nesbit, and you want to use it to cite information in a Wikipedia article, you would provide the following information: Name of author (Roy Nesbit in this example), Title of book, page(s) being referenced.
So, if you find an error in a Wikipedia article (say, it says something took place in Ewelme when it actually took place in Elwell), you would click on the button that says "talk" at the top of the article you were reading, then you would say on the the talk page something to the effect of "According to Roy Nesbit, in (Name of book), page 83, the name of the town is Elwell, not Ewelme. Can someone help me fix it please?" (Or you could fix it yourself, but given your statements about finding our instructions extremely complicated, it's probably best to ask for help.) ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 14:42, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Not entirely clear as to Baddegama’s concerns, but there most certainly is a place called Ewelme Manor,[1] which stands in close proximity to RAF Benson, as can clearly be seen on Google Earth. KJP1 (talk) 07:39, 4 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Possible incorrect way to replace an image

[edit]

I have a question about this image file from Wikimedia Commons: [File:Michael Weller, author.jpg] found on this web address: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Michael_Weller,_author.jpg#metadata: It appears that the recent “new version” is not a new version, but a completely different image by a different artist, which seems to be a good-faith mistake in the way to replace an image, as it affects the copyright agreement, and authorship claim — the 2nd uploader uploaded a new image without changing the related source/author information. Does something need to be done to straighten this out? Åüñîçńøł (talk) 19:51, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The image is insuperior to the original and isn't very high quality so I'll go ahead and revert it. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:54, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
For future reference the details will need to be changed since it's a different image. I suspect that new image might be a copyvio since it's very clearly a screenshot from a phone, but I have no clue where it would be from. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:58, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
