[edit]Creating and Improving articles on contemporary symphonic composers
[edit]Hi, I'm trying to learn how and when to cite various media. The Help Desk has been great, but I don't want to overwhelm them. Is there any Wiki Project or group of editors who could help me with this particular subject? One composer I'm creating a page for has: 1) Reviews of his work in NYT, 2) Reviews of Recordings 3) Reviews and Articles about him in (for example) privately owned websites like one titled, "Wind Band Literature" 4) Online interviews, 5) He is editor and wrote the introduction for a book published by Cambridge and in addition to the {{cite book}} template, the Amazon listing for the book has quotes from scholarly journals under "Product Reviews"--is there any way to indicate this is why I'm using the Amazon link so it doesn't look like Overkill? 5) He's also given interviews, AND he has many scholarly articles published in various places, including "Academia" (usually as a pdf) Google Books and various music journals he edits, as well as articles in which his works are quoted or referenced. Since he is a composer, professor, and scholarly writer I'm trying to find out 1) which are most important to verify notability without having the article obstructed by excessive references, and 2) I want to use different media and references appropriately. Thanks in advance for your help.Trouver (talk) Trouver (talk) 02:53, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, Trouver. There is nothing different about contemporary symphonic composers as opposed to to any other person or any other musical performer or songwriter. A notable person is someone who has
received significant coverage in reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject.
There are some special standards outlined at WP:COMPOSER but please note that guideline says that a personmay be notable
if they meet one or more of the criteria. It is not a guarantee of inclusion. By far the most important factor is the quality of the significant coverage in independent, reliable sources. In depth reviews of works and recordings are useful. Passing mentions aren't. Interviews are of no value in establishing notability because a person's own words are not independent. Scholarly articles about him are excellent but scholarly articles by him are of much less value, unless those articles are widely cited by other scholars. Simply editing and writing the introduction to a book is of little value, but if independent reliable sources such as book reviews talk at length about the editing and the introduction, then those may be of value. Do not cite Amazon because that site exists only to sell things, but the Amazon listing may lead you to better sources. "Wind Band Literature" looks to be a one person website by Andy Pease. WP:SELFPUBLISH explains the standards used to evaluate such sources. As for excessive references, that is a real concern. The best advice I can give is to exclude all weak and borderline sources, and include all high quality sources. Quality is vastly more important than quantity, and you do not want to force draft reviewers to search for a needle in a haystack. Hand them the very best sources on a platter instead. Cullen328 (talk) 05:45, 15 December 2022 (UTC)- Thank you very much, this was extremely helpful.Trouver (talk) Trouver (talk) 15:52, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
InternetArchiveBot (IABot) optional feature does not work anymore
[edit]What happened to the useful feature "Add archives to all non-dead references (Optional)"? IABot cannot perform it anymore (since November 2022 I guess). --Mann Mann (talk) 04:48, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
Trying to correct "my" page.. don't know what I'm doing/how to navigate.. Help please?
[edit]Is there anyone who can help me? I'm a senior with tired eyes and there is a page about me with a lot of inaccuracies. Much appreciated!! Her128 (talk) 05:00, 15 December 2022 (UTC)

submitted draft is taking long to approve
[edit]Hi, i am writing this article on an actor writer director HEMWANT TIWARI from India. this is the draft [1] . Any help or guidance on how to improve the article or if there are any errors causing the delay will be appreciated please. thank you Satanu.pri pandey (talk) 12:07, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- Draft:Hemwant Tiwari has an excess of capital letters, boldface, italics, and underlining, both at the beginnings of words "Film Director, Actor, Writer" and whole words "WORLD'S FIRST BLACK & WHITE SINGLE TAKE FEATURE FILM. No Cuts. No Edits." It has no properly-cited sources, you need to read Help:Referencing for beginners. Maproom (talk) 12:19, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Satanu.pri pandey Also, an encyclopedia article won't say things like "The release of this short film grabbed the headlines by storm". David10244 (talk) 06:30, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
- As it says at the top of Draft:Hemwant Tiwari, you have not yet submitted the draft for review. There would be no point in submitting it for review in its current state as it has no references. You need to read Help:Referencing for beginners. You also have misplaced external links in the text, contrary to WP:external links. You also need to read other parts of the Manual of Style. - David Biddulph (talk) 12:24, 15 December 2022 (UTC)

Recently made an edit that I'm unsure about
[edit]The edit was something to the effect of "Bob, an occasional actor, appeared in Robert's Crisis and on the TV series of the same name, as well as on Mr. Martian." Is the wording too redundant? Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask about this sort of thing. Greberrevin (talk) 15:44, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- I'd probably write "LASTNAME, an occasional actor, appeared in Robert's Crisis and the TV series of the same name; and on the TV series Mr. Martian". --Orange Mike | Talk 15:54, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- @OrangeMike:Thanks. You don't the use of "TV series" twice is redundant, do you?--Greberrevin (talk) 20:50, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- @OrangeMike: Also, you don't think the semicolon is used incorrectly, do you?--Greberrevin (talk) 01:26, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
- Your contributions don't seem to note which article you edited; the only edits I see from you are to this page and a reply on your user talk page. Which article was it? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 21:42, 15 December 2022 (UTC)

shy
doesn't sound like one. I strongly suggest abandoning an account (either this one or the one you made an edit on) or you could risk being blocked for sockpuppetry. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 21:51, 15 December 2022 (UTC)- @Tenryuu: Sorry. using links on a mobile phone
[edit]When I create a link to a subsection, it works on my laptop but not on my iPhone. Is there a format that I should be using to make it work on a smart phone? For an example, go to this page Reading#Learning to read and click on See also: Reading § Teaching reading. Thank you. John NH (talk) 17:46, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- I haven't got an iPhone, but that link takes me to the section on my Android phone, whether in the Wikipedia app or in a browser. ColinFine (talk) 18:23, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Jnhmunro Subsection links sometimes take me to the wrong place when I am using Chrome on my Android tablet, but always the right place when I am using Chrome or the new Edge on my Windows computer. On the tablet, sometimes refreshing the page goes to the right place. David10244 (talk) 06:36, 16 December 2022 (UTC)

Specifically criteria 3 - I'm not 100% on what counts as a "major scholarly society for which [it] is a highly selective honor" to be made a fellow. Is the National Endowment for the Humanities considered a selective enough body? Am I even asking this in the right place? Thanks in advance. Xx78900 (talk) 18:44, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Xx78900, fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities are research grants, not fellowships in the sense of WP:NPROF#3. The National Endowment for the Humanities is a US federal agency, not a scholarly society. StarryGrandma (talk) 21:47, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. Thanks! Xx78900 (talk) 21:48, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
Donations
[edit]Hi, I wonder if your algorithm knows that I just donated and yet every page another request to give pops up. It is a real turn off and I’d love it to go away or stop bothering me. thanks 71.179.249.161 (talk) 19:53, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- Welcome and thank you for your question about donations! To hide the fundraising banners, you can create an account and uncheck Preferences → Banners → Fundraising. The Wikimedia Foundation does not track the identity of IP addresses, so it doesn't know your age, income level or whether you donated in the past.
None of the Wikipedia volunteer editors here who add and improve content in articles receive any financial benefit. We all simply contribute our time because we care about building a great encyclopedia for you and innumerable others around the world to use.
If you cannot afford it, no one wants you to donate. Wikipedia is not at risk of shutting down, and the Wikimedia Foundation, which hosts the Wikipedia platform and is asking for these donations, is richer than ever.
We are led to believe that users who allow cookies are less likely to see these banners on repeat visits (further information is available here), and you are welcome to communicate directly with the donor-relations team by emailingdonate@wikimedia.org
. Thank you! —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 19:54, 15 December 2022 (UTC) - No, it doesn't know. You can stop it bothering you by using an account & setting the preferences to stop such begging notices. The donation requests are from the Wikimedia Foundation, and nothing to do with us here on the English Wikipedia. - David Biddulph (talk) 19:55, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
Adding to the talk page of a semi-protected page
[edit]Hi. I'm trying to add a suggestion to the page ChatGPT, which i read is a semi-protected page. I'm new to wikipedia so I'm not permitted to make the addition myself. I figured then, that I should drop a message putting the idea up on the talk page. For some reason, I can't add ot the corresponding talk page either. How exactly do I put up the suggestion then?
For now, maybe someone else can put it up: the suggestion is to add a header saying "known use cases" which would essentially just list all the various uses people have discovered thusfar for the AI tool. Such a list would be helpful in consolidating the known knowledge about this AI's true potential and enable people to get the most out of it.
Thank you! Socialworker2022 (talk) 19:58, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Socialworker2022: It seems that the talk page for the article has been semi-protected until 23 December for
persistent disruptive editing
. Looking at the page history I can't blame the admin that protected it for doing so. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 20:02, 15 December 2022 (UTC)- @Tenryuu, @Socialworker2022 That was a very weird set of edits to the talk page. Apparently people think that the talk page IS ChatGPT and they will get a reply from it. David10244 (talk) 06:43, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
- As per the "guidance for administrators" here, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Protection_policy#semi
- "A page and its talk page should not normally be protected at the same time. If a page and its talk page are both protected, the talk page should direct affected editors to Wikipedia:Request for edit through the use of a non-iconified page protection template, to ensure that no editor is entirely prevented from contributing."
- I don't think this procedure is being followed here. Is there something I'm missing? Socialworker2022 (talk) 20:05, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Socialworker2022, if I try to edit the talk page, a notice pops up which eventually directs me to Wikipedia:Requests for page protection/Edit. Do you not get that notice? 199.208.172.35 (talk) 20:08, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
Retrieve year, month, or date only from Wikidata item
[edit]I learned that {{wikidata|qualifier|Q28699041|P348|P577|P400=Q1406|P548=Q2804309}} shows "10 October 2024" which is a publication date of specific software, and adding 'raw' or 'mdy' after 'qualifier' shows the date in a different format such as 2024-10-10 and October 10, 2024, respectively. Here, can I show only the year separately from this Wikidata? I tried commands such as {{wikidata|qualifier|year|Q28699041|P348|P577|P400=Q1406|P548=Q2804309}} but it does not seem to work. Regpath (talk) 23:45, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- If
{{wikidata}}
doesn't provide a native way to fetch the year portion of the date, you can use the{{#time}}
parser function:{{#time:Y|{{wikidata|qualifier|Q28699041|P348|P577|P400=Q1406|P548=Q2804309}}}}
→ 2024
