[edit]Page looks like advertisement
[edit]Hi - wondering if anyone would be able to help me with the message that says my wikipedia page has content that looks like advertisement? I'm looking at the help https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Maintenance_template_removal but I am so confused on what should be done ._.
This is the site that I am looking to remove that flag https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Suntec_Singapore_Convention_and_Exhibition_Centre&action=edit — Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.88.55.151 (talk) 01:32, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- Remove the advertising brochure garbage: the pictures of snacks, the photos of people using the free wi-fi, the dreary list of dozens and dozens of trivial local non-notable awards, the peacock words, etc. --Orange Mike | Talk 02:53, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- I am a little suspicious if the images uploaded by Shaunleeyh are truly own work as claimed. MKFI (talk) 10:04, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
Hello everyone
[edit]After few years When i log in, its link with this page not even exits, showing me Wikipedia does not have a user page with this exact name. In general, this page should be created and edited by User:Dinualam. If in doubt, please verify that "Dinualam" exists. Start the User:Dinualam page. User:Dinualam https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Dinualam above everything is wrong. My name is Dinu Alam, a photojurnalist uploaded some historical photos from 10 november 1987 protest for democracy in dhaka with one of the wiki editors help in 2013 with noor hossain activist's photos.Dinualam (talk) 02:58, 5 October 2021 (UTC) i am not a wiki editor and i am requesting someone to correct this issue as soon as possible to link the page bellow https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Dinu_Alam User:Dinu Alam Dinu Alam talk contribs (Created on 20 April 2013 at 06:58) or creat a page with my name " Dinu Alam " info and link all my photos to that page for future reference.Dinualam (talk) 02:58, 5 October 2021 (UTC) --Dinualam (talk) 02:58, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Dinualam: The quoted message says "Wikipedia does not have a user page with this exact name." The blue text is a link to Wikipedia:User pages. The user account exists. The message only says that no user page has been created for the account. The user can create the page but it's optional. Your old account User:Dinu Alam did create a user page in 2013. If you know the password then you can log in as Dinu Alam. If you can accesss mails to the stored email address then you can also use Special:PasswordReset. You have uploaded one non-deleted file as commons:Special:ListFiles/Dinualam and several as commons:Special:ListFiles/Dinu Alam. Accounts cannot be merged. Commons has separate logs and user pages. There is a small user page at commons:User:Dinu Alam. Your uploads show who uploaded them, e.g. at commons:File:10 November 1987 protest for democracy in Dhaka (04).jpg#filehistory (and four other places on that page but they may not be on some other files). If you think one of your images is not crediting you then please link it. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:20, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- Also note that commons:User:Dinu Alam has a link "User uploads" under "Tools" (not present in the mobile version of the site). It automatically shows all non-deleted files uploaded to Commons by that account. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:25, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
Attempting to deal with a single-purpose account
[edit]Hi, I've recently encountered a user account that I believe to be engaged in single-purpose editing, namely that they are exclusively editing articles related to the Chinese diaspora in Burma, and seem to be pushing a highly negative point of view. I am aware that there are avenues that I should take with this account in dealing with this, but I am unsure as to what these are. Could someone inform me on the steps that I should take in this scenario? Thanks. Tamptonato (talk) 05:04, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Tamptonato: - first step is to try engaging with the editor in question. Second step is to try to get the involvement of other editors, maybe by raising issues at a Wikiproject talk page or via a WP:RFC at an affected article's talk page or a relevant Wikiproject's talk page. If all else fails, WP:ANI is the place to go. Mjroots (talk) 10:37, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
Separating lists from articles
[edit]— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 16:41, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
I've created and maintained lists in the past, but there's a more complex issue being discussed at Talk:Amusement Today#Splitting the article. Hoping someone with extensive list experience could weigh in and offer some advice. Doesn't seem like this warrants an RfC at this stage. Thanks in advance! --GoneIn60 (talk) 09:28, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
Created page
[edit]I tried to create my own wiki page. Since I didn't find my previous one, I registered again. How can I make PERMANENT my wiki page/its link? Renato Spigler — Preceding unsigned comment added by Renato Spigler (talk • contribs) 10:41, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- Renato Spigler Wikipedia has articles, not mere "pages". This is a subtle but important distinction. You edited your user page, User:Renato Spigler, which is not article space, but a space to tell about yourself as a Wikipedia editor only. Autobiographical articles, while not forbidden, are strongly discouraged on Wikipedia, in part because people naturally write favorably about themselves. Please review the autobiography policy. Wikipedia is interested in what independent reliable sources say about you, showing how you meet Wikipedia's special definition of a notable person, not what you want to say about yourself. If you still wish to proceed at this, you must use Articles for Creation to create a draft, as new users cannot directly create articles. 331dot (talk) 10:45, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- Also Wikipedia is not a free webhost, which is why your Wikipedia user page (not your "own wiki page") has been deleted. Please see WP:NOT.--Shantavira|feed me 12:08, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
Removing article from AFC space
[edit]Hi. I made a mistake putting this article through the AFC process and would like to remove it from the process.
Can I know the full process to make sure I don't miss anything?
-Imcdc (talk) 12:03, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- Imcdc You may simply remove the AFC template. Unless you have extensive experience creating articles, it's usually a good idea to use the AFC process. 331dot (talk) 12:16, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- Imcdc if you submit the draft, I will be happy to accept it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Theroadislong (talk • contribs) 12:24, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
To undo my page Tripurari
[edit]Dear Team, I am representing the page 'Tripurari' and every time I update the information some other user redirect it to another page with a different name. I am a new user here and unable to understand that why its happening if there are two people with different name? Please suggest me a solution. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aryansharmaa987 (talk • contribs) 15:20, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- I think this is what has happened:
- There was a Wikipedia article Tripurari Swami about an American Hindu poet born in 1949; and a redirect to it from Tripurari.
- You wanted to create an article about and Indian poet also named Tripurari, date of birth unspecified. You modified the existing redirect, and wrote an article there.
- You were accused of hijacking the redirect page, and your edits were undone and the redirect restored. There was some to-ing-and-fro-ing about that.
- I suggest that you avoid any further controversy and edit-warring by creating Draft:Tripurari, and when it is of a standard to be accepted as an article, you submit it for review. If and when a reviewer accepts it, it will be their job to sort out the problem of how to name the article and what to do about the redirect.. Maproom (talk) 15:39, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks, Maproom. This was previously discussed at Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2021 September 29#Editor has overwritten a redirect with an article about an unrelated, seemingly NN subject. Aryansharmaa987 please do not add links to the article in any existing articles until such time as the draft has been accepted. Curb Safe Charmer (talk) 17:50, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
Resizing image in Infobox
[edit]I want to make the picture in the infobox of Michigan Limestone and Chemical Company some 10% smaller. What image size parameter can I add to the infobox that will make the image size 90% or 85%? Can you demonstrate. Thanks.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 20:22, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Doug Coldwell: Default is 220px (pixels of width). I changed it to 200px. See Help:Pictures#Thumbnail sizes. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 00:10, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Timtempleton: Thanks.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 09:16, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
Updating/Fixing the Bible/King James/Documentary Hypothesis page(s) on Wikiversity
[edit]The page mentioned is unsourced and seems to be out of date with modern scholarship. I want to go through it to bring it up to date, but since I am a unexperienced editor, I wanted to ask if there's anything I should know in terms of marking the page as under construction and such. I'm not sure how long it will take but it definitely won't be overnight. Huz and Buz (talk) 20:48, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- Huz and Buz this helpdeask is for questions about English Wikipedia. I suggest asking at Wikiversity:Help desk. TSventon (talk) 22:12, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
Companies House PDF too long?
[edit]Hi again,
Trying to add a quick footnote about the merger of a bus company into another, else I risk it being tagged with Template:Citation Needed and eventually removed. However, the only credible source I have at hand is a set of Companies House PDF, and… well, that URL on it’s own is certainly something. See below:
So… what do I do with it? All I wanted was a quick cited footnote. Do I just have to lump it and put in the citation, adding a pointless load of data and making the souce page look a mess? Or should I seek an alternative to Companies House? I get the impression Wikipedia forbids the use of URL shorteners, so I believe that’s out the question. Any advice on how I can at least trim that mess down before putting it under Template:Cite Web would be gladly appreciated.
Kind regards, Hullian111 (talk) 20:48, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Hullian111: Just use that horrible URL. If you do not want it inline in the source text, then add your cite as a named list-defined reference down in the
{{reflist}}
(see WP:LDR). You can add an apology as a comment. -Arch dude (talk) 21:37, 5 October 2021 (UTC)- The URL as quoted produces an XML error page including the phrases 'AccessDenied' and 'Request has expired'. I suggest that it is unusable in that form, and if you still want to refer to it you need to find a more stable way to refer to the document.--Verbarson (talk) 21:48, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Arch dude: Thanks for the assistance on the dodgy PDF link issue. I’ve since found an alternative to the Companies House link through a book and therefore won’t be needing to use this cite. Any guidance on possibly using this in other articles, though, would gladly be appreciated.
- @Verbarson: Don’t see what the issue is with the XML error, it loaded fine for me - might it be a regional thing? Hullian111 (talk) 15:02, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
- Companies House URLs are Amazon S3 presigned URLs. I don't remember the specifics of how they work (i.e. whether they are limited to a single IP), but the URL does generally expire. So for example, the long link you added above does not work for me. The best way to cite Companies House is probably to refer to the specific document, and then have a link to the page where that document can be opened from. Font colour
[edit]Is it possible to change the font colour of text e.g. from black to white on WP? And if so, how? Difficultly north (talk) The artist formerly known as Simply south 21:07, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Difficultly north: You can use the {{White}} template, though I can't imagine it'd see much use on pages. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 21:24, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Difficultly north: Do you mean change it for everybody in selected places, or change it for yourself in most places? For the latter you may be interested in "Use a black background with green text" or "Dark mode: Use a light text on dark background color scheme" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. Trying to revert multiple edits
[edit]Hi, all, I'm trying to revert all the multiple edits by this user in this article on 6 August. I wrote most of the article as it now stands. The edits, probably carried out in good faith, are disruptive as they break the {{efn}}s and insert the footnote into the main text with the efn params showing. I have probably screwed up the order of reversion, and now I'm disallowed because of multiple intervening entries. Could someone please do the reverts, please. Cheers, MinorProphet (talk) 21:11, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- Why not try a Manual Revert to the last known good version? MinorProphet (talk) 13:44, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
- @MinorProphet: That did the trick, thanks! MinorProphet (talk) 13:44, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
