- Re-creating the panorama from scratch will be much easier than editing an existing one. Could you perhaps upload the ingredient images separately to Commons or any file hosting site? —Quibik (talk) 00:27, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

- Uhm... thanks, but aren't these just crops of the unmodified panorama image? What I meant by "ingredient images" would be the unedited original images directly from a camera. Don't you have access to these anymore? —Quibik (talk) 21:00, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

- Nr one was good, however I'm doubtful about 2-4 because they don't seem to have natural colors. For example Safura's shirt got green when it's in fact gray and Lena got too much color in my opinion. It might look nice but is not good in an encyclopedia. Athyllis (talk) 14:15, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Pedro II of Brazil
Article(s): Pedro II of Brazil
Request: Hi, everyone, good night! I was wondering if any of you could help me out with this one. There is a picture of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil that've I tried to color it (See [2]). However, my skills are close to... none and I was unable to make his beard and hair blond. And I also believe his skin color is not close to how it truly was (See [3] or [4] or [5]). I'd like to warn you all that it is in fact a photomontage of a photograph of Pedro II (his head) and a painting of his (the body and background), both done in 1851. If you could also make that photomontage look better, that is, more real, it would be great. I am going to nominate the article for featured status so wanted everything to look perfect. Thank you all very much! Lecen (talk) 00:50, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

Are these photographs of signs in Japan? If so then they're probably all derivative works and will need deleted. — raekyT 05:48, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
- Based on what? These are all fair-use images hosted on the English Wikipedia.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 06:24, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
- The artwork on them would pass the threshold of originality to grant it copyright protection to the creator... Thus the photos of the signs are derivative works and we would require OTRS of the original creator of the signs artwork to allow their use here. — raekyT 06:31, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
- They are still under the same rules as movie posters and PSAs-only a reason for non-overuse, not a call to mass-delete.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 06:42, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
- Are you trying to say your claiming WP:NFC? They wouldn't pass WP:NFCC, you'd have to choose ONE of them, and even then the way it's used in the article does not justify a non-free media claim. Secondly they're not even labeled as such, so I tagged them all as no-evidence-for-permission, since they're copyrighted works of Japan Tobacco International (JTI), they was advertisements. And finally, if they are non-free media they CAN'T be displayed here! — raekyT 07:01, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
- Actually because of those claims I re-tagged them as missing fair-use rationale, but be warned, none of these will pass WP:NFCC and all will be deleted under that most likely. In hindsight I think it was silly of me to assume that the flickr user was an official agent of JTI and that there was no realistic expectation of the possibly of getting evidence of permission. — raekyT 07:16, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, even if these signs are permanently in a public place, Japanese law doesn't seem to be on our side here. I can see them potentially being used under our non-free content criteria, but, almost certainly, as Raeky says, only one of them. In what article did you intend to use them? J Milburn (talk) 19:30, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- I believe Smoking in Japan, it does discuss these ads in one paragraph in the "Japanese smoking culture" section, but I'm skeptical that it needs an illustration of it under fair-use. I don't think the wording of the article would justify WP:NFCC#8. — raekyT 02:58, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, there's a brief, unsourced mention. If there were a couple of sources in the paragraph, and the style of the image was discussed (as it is now) I don't think I'd have too much objection to one of them being used. J Milburn (talk) 09:21, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

- Thank you, it looks very good, but do you think it would be possible to make the orange stripes more red. P. S. Burton (talk) 19:36, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
- I tried for a while to do that without affecting the rest of the colour - I couldn't get it right - maybe someone better at colour balancing will have a go. I think the problem is there is less red in those stripes in the high res image to start with than in your example image - but I'm not certain - someone more skilled with colour filters than I am may have more luck. It may be a case of adding red to just the stripes and the bat handle to achieve it. I just uploaded one with red boosted overall - the face is too red in that one. Begoontalk 20:10, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
- I got rid of some of the redness in the face by filtering it out in just that area - but it's still not as red as you want it in the stripes. Begoontalk 20:29, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
- I had a go with it as well. I further tweaked Begoon's version to increase the red in the stripes and some other colour adjustment, also cropped the left side to even up the amount of border around the image. Fallschirmjäger ✉ 11:58, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

- Yes I didn't even look at that - my effort was horribly distorted - too busy looking at the pixels to step back and look at the picture... I hang my head in shame, and I've done a new version. I don't think it's ever going to make a particularly good shot, though, because of that peculiar "in the middle of a word" expression you often get when snapping someone speaking rather than posed, and the noise in the shot. It's better than no free image at all, though - and Quibik's is still better than mine for colour in the tie etc... Begoontalk 16:09, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Request: Remove watermarks. Thanks. Connormahtalk 23:05, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s):
- Comment - tried these, but even with Photoshop's wonderful new Content Aware Fill on the Spot Healing Brush I can't get an acceptable result. Spot healing and clone stamping leave too many traces - the watermarks obscure too much important detail that would need to be redrawn, and then it's not enhancement/restoration, it's pretty much WP:OR - sorry, maybe someone else has more skill at this... Begoontalk 17:11, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- A method I have effectively used before (on File:Chester A. Arthur portrait c1882.jpg, for example) is using the upscaled thumbnail image available on the archive's image description page (i.e. this) to replace the watermark: the watermark is placed in different positions on the thumbnail and the full-scale images. Some additional cloning can then be used to make the upscaled and blurry areas seem more natural. It won't look perfect, but the watermarks are certainly removable. —Quibik (talk) 18:52, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- Did the first one. I don't think I'll have time to do the others, though. (As a tip to anyone else interested in working with the others: simply adding noise (extracted from the background, for example) to the blurry areas works surprisingly well. Also, the thumbnail images need gamma correction by ~0.67.) —Quibik (talk) 20:28, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

- He was trickier, because there was a lot more noise in this one - in the colour, and there were eyeballs, wisps of hair and other fun stuff behind the watermark which weren't very distinct even in the thumbnail - so I've done the best I can in greyscale... Begoontalk 05:43, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
- I had another look at this and tried to fix up that pretty awful greyscale attempt. It's still pretty poor, but when I get time I think I may do better from scratch. One for a rainy day. Begoontalk 17:30, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Request: Ok, let's start over here. I requested, and received, a scanned copy of the photo above. I've also rescanned the photo from the book, Making Michigan Move, which is where I discovered this photo. MDOT's scan from their archives was done at 72dpi, which resulted in 795 × 465 pixels, 175 KB. The scan I just did from the book came out at 3,294 × 1,916 pixels, 16.1 MB. The problem though is that the book was printed in in a weird sepia for the photos and blue for the text. As well, the scanned version from the book has a noticeable moiré pattern. Is there anything that can be done to salvage this photo? The first version has been nominated at WP:FPC, but it's just too low of resolution and garnering opposition left and right. Imzadi 1979 → 14:40, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s): Opinion: You won't really get anywhere with that scan from the book, I don't think. All you have there is a high resolution scan of a low resolution image so all you've done is perfectly captured the halftone screen used by the printer, resulting in "dots the size of golfballs" - hence the moire. Open it in an editor, and zoom in on, say, the power pole in the trees just right of centre until you can see the halftone dots. The dots are 20-25% of the width of the pole. Now do the same with your b/w image and you'll see that even though it isn't very good there is far more detail even in that, without the giant halftone dots. That's because they scanned an original photo. The only way to get more detail is to get a scan done from the photo at higher than 72 dpi - which I think you indicated you can't do. It doesn't matter how well you scan the book, the intermediate step of the printer applying his halftone screen has removed the detail. Begoontalk 01:40, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
- I agree with Begoon here. The halftoned image is definitely a lower resolution. See, for example my attempt at removing the halftoning (speckle removal + gaussian blur + size reduction). Despite that, your book scan should probably be JPEG compression at a setting of 95, rather than 100. 100 doesn't mean lossless, in most cases it just needlessly increases the file size. gringer (talk) 05:19, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
I cleaned up the half-tone that was causing the moiré patterns (and desaturated). I uploaded that version without any additional adjustments in consideration of anyone else interested in improving that image. I also uploaded another version with some quick additional contrast adjustments. Compared to the other scan this image is indeed higher-resolution, but unfortunately absolutely lacks in shadow detail.
For other editors: feel free improve upon the first image. Additional noise reduction and level adjustments will probably be useful. You can overwrite my second image. —Quibik (talk) 13:54, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
- Ok - you gave me an idea. I took the original low res image, resized and cropped it to exactly match the cleaned up book scan, then blended the book scan on top of the low res to give it resolution and detail. It's uploaded above. I haven't done any other clean up except for a tiny blur to the book scan to get rid of the last traces of halftone dots. See what you think. It can certainly still be cleaned up a bit, and levels/contrast adjusted. This was more a "proof of concept" before getting into that. Begoontalk 15:47, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
- So is it too late to tell you guys that MDOT got me a 300 dpi TIFF scan off the archived photo? It's been covnerted to PNG and uploaded at File:M-15 centerline 1917-2.png Trust me, when I saw that last version though, I was pleasantly blown away this morning. Request: Can one of you wizards bring out the details in this dark daguerreotype by Mathew Brady, while respecting the photographer's original? Many thanks, as always MarmadukePercy (talk) 03:52, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you! I agree with your decision to leave the scratches in. MarmadukePercy (talk) 10:30, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s): Done, unless you wanted the scratches removed too; I didn't want to interfere to much with the original work. EWikistTalk 22:32, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Request: Could someone crop Jim Petersen, the guy at the right, from this? ~EDDY (talk/contribs/editor review)~ 22:59, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s): Here's a crop - what you end up with is quite indistinct, though, and very low res. Begoontalk 04:34, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks! It's pretty low quality, which I was expecting. Anyway, it'll do. ~EDDY (talk/contribs/editor review)~ 12:43, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Request: Can somebody fix the spelling of "length"? If you have time, could you also vectorize the image? Thanks so much for your help. Guoguo12--Talk-- 16:17, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s):
How about the existing vector above ? Begoontalk 16:35, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
- Very good, thanks! Could you also change the commas to periods? Sorry, I didn't notice them before. Thank you. Guoguo12--Talk-- 17:27, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
- Changed - and a blue version in case you prefer that. Begoontalk 17:53, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
- Perfect. Thank you so much; people have been complaining about that picture for years. Guoguo12--Talk-- 18:27, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
- No problem. I increased the captions slightly so they are legible at the size you use in the article. (I also fixed the spelling on the old jpg just in case anyone uses it - but it probably should be deleted now) Begoontalk 06:33, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
