- There are legitimate reasons for offensive language to be on Wikipedia, and a word related to a racial slur in the title of a work is such a legitimate reason. But a lot of other new users introduce large amounts of offensive language to Wikipedia for reasons that are not legitimate. Once you have edited several other articles, this filter will assume you have a basic understanding of policy and no longer affect you. --Damian Yerrick (talk | stalk) 13:50, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

- Simply illustrate that in this case the "feminist double standard" holds no water. If obscenities are an issue then I fully understand my blocking. - Benefits (How I Met Your Mother) (filter log)
- Description
- I was clarifying a plot point that the character Marshall is using Ted and Robin's restroom to have a bowel movement instead of doing so at his workplace. This plot point could have been confusing due to the later mentioning that Barney thinks they were referring to "reading a magazine" as masturbating in their bathroom. This point is slightly vague when watching the show, so I felt it necessary to clarify in this Wikipedia article. I used the simple vernacular "poop" instead of going through verbose language such as "relieving his bowel movements" or "depositing fecal matter" for clarity.

- Description
- Attempted to add sub-section on perpetrator's mental health, referencing the expert opinion submitted by the court-appointed forensic psychiatrists. How can this be flagged as "unconstructive"? - Description
- My edits were fairly minor (punctuation, grammar, diction). I think the warning was triggered because I added another instance of a URI that included authentication information--i.e., username and password--so the URI looks like an e-mail address (it includes "...username:password@example.com..."). Also, note that the URI was already on the page in another location. (I also got a warning for my initial attempt to submit this report.) (It all seems fair, though; it was only a warning, not a block.)

- This so confusing. All I tried to do is change 'it's' to 'its' in the article on Constantinople. The article uses the former as a possessive. suddenly I got an angry-looking message that I was making massive changes. At or toward the end of the message was a place to click if I believed the message to be in error. I did, and I did. But then I got sent directly to a page entitled "False Positive." I don't know what this technical term means (It isn't obvious if one knows the original meaning in science.), and there was no-where to click to find out. So I don't even know what this page I'm writing on is about. For want of a nail. . . .

- There's no easy way to fix this without letting in a lot of vandalism, so I just made the edit for you. Although curiously, I find no evidence the quote was ever actually uttered. Someguy1221 (talk) 04:50, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks! Agree that it might be problematic to modify the filter. I don't know how easy it would be to have it permit changes such as "sh*t" -> "shit" but still not allow someone to just insert the word into articles. I noted the cite-needed tag but have not been able to track down an on-line source. It's one of those commonly-attributed quotes that are accepted as being factual by the relevant community. I think it's sufficiently non-controversial to stay in the article. 203.59.82.206 (talk) 05:15, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- Actually, now that I see that there are 58,000 pages on Wikipedia that display "sh*t" (often as the letter-for-letter actual title of something), I'll go and make that change. Someguy1221 (talk) 06:20, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

- Chronicle (film) (filter log)
- Description
- I wrote this section into the page as I felt it was true. Please include a sub section called 'Interpretation/Sentiments' with the following words:
The story is not of the superhero genre. Rather the directors have written a deeper film which is not solely focused on creating a mindless visual feast for the audience with 2D characters. The film casts reflection upon the audience around how Andrew used his ability and how the audience themselves would react had they been given this god-like ability. More specifically there is a underlying sentiment which asks how the audience would respond had they lived in Andrew's skin and this is achieved in the film via a thorough depiction of Andrew's self.
Because the main characters are youth, the reaction enjoying their newfound strengths, despite Andrew raising early on the desire to 'do more' with their abilities, feels justified.
The film is dramatic, dark, and fits more so into the youth and rebellion genre of teen films akin to Donnie Darko (also a non superhero film). The audience experiences sympathy with Andrew's use of the camera to create a barrier between himself and the world. Andrew is not depicted as simply a recluse and introvert but in totality it appears Andrew fits moreso into the new darker caricature of a misanthrope on the verge of suicide akin to previous characters like Ledger's joker. Andrew undergoes a journey where he connects for possibly the first time in his life however this is again shattered by his violent drunken father who grills into him a previously honed message, that he has no real friends, that he is a loser. During this scene Andrew talks back and reacts violently to his father which causes him to return to his previous depressed state depicted early in the film where he is crying alone outside a party. The aggression/violence of Andrew's father, and the bullying, unkindness Andrew experiences is contrasted with his kind and loving mother who tells Andrew he is stronger than he thinks he is (alongside his newfound friendships). The purpose in highlighting a small ray of kindness towards Andrew through his cousin, William and mostly his mother is used to depict and re-assert the final message that prior to being pushed over the edge by the death of his mother which his dad blames on him, Andrew resists his true nature - namely that of a misanthrope who has adopted upon the Darwinian idea that the strong should dominate the weak. Andrew's decent into the full extent of his depressive/misanthropic nature is initially highlighted by him killing a spider in gruesome fashion amidst screams of his mum in anguish.
The final scenes of Andrew's violence depict his departure from the previous sane and merciful Andrew into a somewhat merciless, violent, and morally insane Andrew which is justifiably ended by his cousin and friend in mercy.
It explores the reaction of an individual like Andrew in the context of suffering mentally, lacking role models, lacking compassion to the extent it is needed, and morale guidance. The resort to Darwinian philosophy which mentions that apex predators don't feel guilt in killing weaker creatures although makes sense logically, depicts Andrew's departure from normality and perhaps sanity completely.

- Description
- I drifted by this talk page, saw some comments (including a blatant personal attack from months ago that I'm kind of surprised nobody cleared off - have the existence of poorly made autodetecting vandalism tools like this one made everyone go to sleep at the wheel in reverting things?) and wanted to clear them as the user clearly indicated was acceptable. I was blocked by the edit filter. This is stupid. Surely the basic premise of assuming good faith means that the edit filter should merely warn me not to make an unconstructive edit and not actively forbid me from editing. I'm frankly appalled at the sort of newbie biting that has apparently sprung up since last I actually bothered to use an account.

It's only one more click, and I'm sure you can spare the time before festooning us with your next incredibly helpful suggestion. But you're missing the rather larger point here - the edit filter isn't supposed to block productive edits. Removing comments in accordance with a user's wishes is a productive edit. This web page has been around since 2006. I am Wyatt Ehrenfels but I have never had anything to do with any -- what word did you use? -- sockpuppetry. Nor has there been any involvement of anyone acting on my behalf (or to get me in some kind of trouble) since 2006. Yet this page still ranks #2 in a search of my name. I'd appreciate it if you took it down or allowed me to edit it in such a way so readers understand I have (nor had) anything to do with Wikipedia.

This is what I wrote ..
Wow, That was hard, I could not reply to you as the blocked user name, which I have now altered and now hopefully conforms.
SEnine Magazine. I noted that the history of many magazines appear on Wikipedia, and was attempting to achieve the same. I looked at many other magazines listed in Wikipedia and modeled my contribution on them. I am not sure what is wrong with what I posted.
I see that you are a busy person, however would like to understand how to make the entry I placed conform with the other magazine entries placed on the site.
Thank you.
Mark

- Template:Infobox television/doc (filter log)
- Description
- Adding appropriate credit titles. In all the entertainment infoboxes especially concerning television there are many inaccurate credit titles, many important title omissions and plain title type errors. For example. I was attempting to add a title to the "Hard Copy" television show. Hardcopy was a segment oriented show. There fore you had "segment producers", something that does not exist in theatrical films or television. Further, Hardcopy was unique in that it was a union show, unders the auspices of DGA. The term "segment director" is used by DGA. Because the infobox template does not contain correct title choices....people have put themselves in the "closest match"...in this case wildly inaccurate portrayals of duties is presented....such as "segment directors" portaryed as "producer".
