Category counting

There are various bots which, as part of their operation, count the number of articles in a category and do something with the result. Would it be possible for a bot to be created which would accept requests for counting? That is, the bot userspace contains a list of categories, which can be added to by any user. When the bot is run, each category is counted and the results recorded in the same or another page. If someone can create/modify a bot to do this, I can add template code to the page to enable the results to be called by templates. Happymelon 15:03, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

I would be glad to add this to my bot, but I don't like the idea of allowing users to add to the list themselves. Instead they could just ask me to add the category to the list of categories counted. That's more secure for various reasons. — Carl (CBM · talk) 15:07, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Fair enough - I can see how adding lots of large categories would generate a large workload for the bot and/or the server. Give me ten minutes and I'll have a template structure If you can make the bot work around the structure currently at User:Happy-melon/sandbox2, the values can be called direct from templates. Happymelon 15:24, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
The count for each category will end up in a page like User:VeblenBot/Count/Requests for peer review. So each category will have a different page. The counts can be transcluded from there to anywhere else. This is a more general setup, which makes the same script useful for other purposes as well (for example, for a wikiproject to count the number of articles they have tagged). — Carl (CBM · talk) 15:51, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
That's equally good. Can I give you a few to start off with? The original reason for this request was to automate updating Template:Copyedit progress, so a count for all the "Category:Wikipedia articles requiring copyedit from Month 200X would be helpful for me. Many thanks, Happymelon 16:47, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

←I already have a bot set up to count categories. You might want to check it out, so you don't need to add the functionality. It uses Wikipedia's database which is available on the m:Toolserver. Take a look at User:Erwin85/CatCount for more information. --Erwin85 22:42, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Is there a catalog of bots somewhere? It might help reduce duplication of effort. Happy-melon, please let me know whether you would like to use Ewrin's setup or mine; either should work. — Carl (CBM · talk) 01:56, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
Given that Erwin85's bot seems to have all the required functionality, I'll use his and not put you to any more work. Thanks for all your help though. I second the proposal to find/create a catalog of bot functions, horribly difficult though it would be to maintain. Happymelon 12:25, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Reminder to Create a User Page

Hi,

I would like for a bot to be created that would simply send a message to a new user, to remind them to create a Userpage. This is because some of the new pages are made by new users, who have talk and contribution pages but not User pages. If they don't have this then you will not be able to learn more about them!

The Helpful One (Talk) (Contributions) 17:28, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not MySpace, there is absolutely no need to encourage users to create userpages, it's unrelated to writing the encyclopedia, so this bot would be absolutely useless for goals of Wikipedia. MaxSem(Han shot first!) 18:36, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
It can also be deemed as a 'welcome bot' as it is leaving all new users a message. I do not believe that this bot should be considered. — E talkBAG 01:24, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
You're totally right. Snowolf How can I help? 13:10, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi,

I have an idea for a new bot, this is a bot that searches through pages, looking for any words that link to other wikipedia articles. For example, a Wikipedia tutorial has been created by a user, it mentions IRC, the bot would then search that, find the keyword IRC and link it to the article regarding IRC.... what do you think?

The Helpful One (Talk) (Contributions) 17:23, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Pointless overlinking makes text unreadable and serves no definite purpose. MaxSem(Han shot first!) 17:53, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
Agreed, it takes a human to know if a link is worthwhile or not. 1 != 2 17:58, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Alas, Wikipedia isn't that semantic. But there is a tool that suggests links, which you may or may not add: User:Nickj/Can We Link It. GracenotesT § 21:05, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Wikify_bot ?

This is just an idea. It could be possible to create a bot for automatic wikification of WP pages. The bot would make a search across the names of WP articles to find an exact match and mark the found term with the squared parentheses. To avoid excessive wikilinking it would do the following:

  1. Wikilink only the first occurrence of the term in the article.
  2. Wikilink only combinations of words rather than single words.
  3. Make an additional search against WikiDictionary (or another language dictionary), and do not wikify any terms found in the dictionary. Then the bot could also wikify single-word abbreviations (not found in the dictionary).

So, what do you think? I think such bot could be very important because wikilinking is main advantage of WP compare to other resources/databases.Biophys 17:38, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

See the previous section. Soxred93 has a boring sig 17:55, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
Bots have no ways to determine if the link would be relevant. MaxSem(Han shot first!) 17:57, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
This is funny. Sorry, I did not read the previous section! Of course, main problem would be over-linking. That is why I suggested above a few possible ways to overcome this. There are others. For example, one could create a list of pages "to be linked everywhere", such as geographic names, technical terms, protein names, etc. Such links are not really context-dependent if to also follow rules 1-3 above. This is not something obviously unrealistic.Biophys 21:22, 2 December 2007 (UTC) For example, consider Latin names like Trifolium repens or protein names like Protein G. Such things suppose to be linked at least once in every article where they appear.Biophys 21:36, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
There really should not be pages that are linked to from everywhere. Soxred93 has a boring sig 18:30, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
I thought that first appearances of all biological species, geographical locations, and certain technical terms should be linked from everywhere... But I realize that such things are problematic. So, the answer is "no", which is fine.Biophys 18:45, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

Compilation of articles by size

Hi. I was wondering if a bot could compile all the articles about municipalities of Norway into a list which sorts the articles by size. It would look something like this:

mun size
Andøy 4.5 KB
Asker 6.5 KB
...... and so on

I would like to have the list in my user space, for instance at User:Punkmorten/Municipalities of Norway by article size.

The articles, 431 in total, can be found in the following categories: Category:Municipalities of Akershus Category:Municipalities of Aust-Agder Category:Municipalities of Buskerud Category:Municipalities of Finnmark Category:Municipalities of Hedmark Category:Municipalities of Hordaland Category:Municipalities of Østfold Category:Municipalities of Møre og Romsdal Category:Municipalities of Nord-Trøndelag Category:Municipalities of Nordland Category:Municipalities of Oppland Category:Municipalities of Rogaland Category:Municipalities of Sogn og Fjordane Category:Municipalities of Sør-Trøndelag Category:Municipalities of Telemark Category:Municipalities of Troms Category:Municipalities of Vest-Agder Category:Municipalities of Vestfold as well as Oslo. Hope this is possible. Thanks, Punkmorten 12:22, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

I've run a query on the database and put the results at http://tools.wikimedia.de/~erwin85/dbq/norwegianpages_enwiki.txt in utf8. The file doesn't include Oslo, which is 38145 bytes. --Erwin85 17:26, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

A specialised archiving bot would be a great thing. It could scan the page for sections tagged as {{resolved}} / {{stale}} for 7 days without follow-ups and then auto-archive those sections. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to write a bot myself. I dorftrotteltalk I 22:50, December 2, 2007

Try talking to one of the users who own the archiving bots that already exist. I'm sure they'll be able to modify the code as neccessary. Thanks. Redrocketboy 19:36, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

For someone with way too much time on his hands

Since the page WP:COA is giving me a headache, could some bot owner who wants a similar headache run a query over it and remove all people that (1) aren't admins, or (2) haven't edited for three months or more? Reward: Three cookies and a goldfish. >Radiant< 23:43, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

Per consensus at WP:CRIC here, would someone be interested in changing links to all of the following variants to the above.

ie. any articles which link to these should be changed to link to either [[One Day International]] or [[One Day International]]s (as applicable). Thanks. —Moondyne 06:25, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Is this really necessary? Redirects will do the job just fine, won't they? See WP:R2D. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 15:27, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Yes it is. Redirects do the job as far as pointing to the right article, but the links appear in the text styled incorrectly. The cricket project style guide has been adjusted per the consenus and hence the request. —Moondyne 15:37, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
I still think, per WP:R2D, that it's not necessary. But SatyrBot can do it. There are 3,106 articles that use one of the variants mentioned above. I'll get the bot working on it this afternoon. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 16:16, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Perhaps I didn't qualify my request well enough. I wasn't suggesting we needed to change [[One-day international|ODI]] to [[One Day international|ODI]] becasue that is unnecessary, per WP:R2D. I was talking specifically of unpiped links. —Moondyne 01:42, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Header changes in 20th-21st year article

I intend to adjust (possibly collapse into a single one) the Year-specific Compact TOC ({{C20YearTOC}} and variation), and the "notes" default header will go for "references". Although that header is almost always empty, it would Still be better titled as "references", and so there is a need to replace the level 2 header "Notes" with "References" in all 20th-century year articles.

Bonus points for

  • Adding {{C20YearTOC}} before the "Events" header where it is missing and
  • Making the first header "Events" (as opposed to "Events in XXXX") everywhere.

AfD summary

I really enjoyed DragonsFlight's tool for AfD summaries, but it appears to have gone inactive a few months ago when DF went on a wiki-vacation. Is there anything else comparable out there, or if not, I'd like to request that someone write a new version of the bot or somehow get it active again?  :) --Elonka 21:47, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Category changes

I'm a new admin who has been approached by a user with the appropriate credentials -- he's signed up to the relevant projects, etc, and works in the area of botanic taxonomy. He asked me for help with the category-switching tasks noted below:

Is this the right place to ask for assistance -- is this a task best accomplished by a bot? If not, could someone please point me at the right place? Many thanks in advance for looking this over. Accounting4Taste:talk 01:41, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

I'll get my bot to do it. Soxred93 has a boring sig 04:38, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
I presume that those should be nominated at WP:CFD? Even if they're speedy requests. - jc37 05:10, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
Yes, that's appropriate, and thanks for the reminder. In this case, the editor who created them is requesting their deletion, so I guess it won't be a problem. I'll take care of that. Thanks for the prompt assistance. Accounting4Taste:talk 05:18, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Adding WikiProject template to talk pages

I have been working on getting the Green Bay Packers WikiProject back up and running, and one major aspect is placing {{WikiProject Green Bay Packers}} on every talk page in the three categories Category:Green Bay Packers, Category:Green Bay Packers players, and Category:Green Bay Packers coaches. This encompasses around 912 articles, thus I do not want to do this by hand :-) Any help from a bot would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Gonzo fan2007 talkcontribs 03:15, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

Just those three cats, right? And do you want any parameters in there - like "class=Stub" for articles that are in a stub class? Or a blank "importance="? Those are frequently requested, but I wasn't sure if you wanted them or not. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 05:57, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
Done, but no additional items added, didn't see any parallel stub class or similar on the random articles I checked. SkierRMH (talk) 06:07, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
Oh wow!! I actually edit conflicted with you SkierRMH, thanks a lot for your work!!! I was going to say that the parameters arent needed, so that worked out well. I was actually going to see if one more smaller and easier request was possible, which is adding {{PackersFirstPick}} to every article that is in the template. If so that would be great!!
Gonzo fan2007 talkcontribs 06:11, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
Question: When you say done, do you mean it is done or it is in progress, because it seems that only about 60 articles have been tagged, just wanted to make sure everything is good :-)
Gonzo fan2007 talkcontribs 06:19, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
Stopped the run midstream - I was attempting to get the Piped "class" and "importance" to work - looks like they're going to need to get added to the template sooner or later, but your answer above told me to go ahead with finishing off the talk pages. Get back to you on the footer in a bit. SkierRMH (talk) 06:30, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

I've already posted a BRFA. MaxSem(Han shot first!) 11:56, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

There are many pieces of text that break autoformatting. For example:

  • [[5 November|November 5]]
  • [[5th November]]
  • [[5 November]][[1980 in music|1980]]
  • [[1 November|1]]-[[5 November]] date ranges should not be linked because they end up looking like '1-November 5'.
  • many more

Editors keep adding these invalid formats due to understandable confusion about putting brackets around dates. They are created faster than they can fixed by routine editing. The errors are difficult for a human to detect but easy for a machine. Several people, including me, have script to address these (e.g. see my monobook script) but they are not quick enough to cope. However, a high speed bot is needed to keep up with the constant creation of these errors. Is anyone willing to create a bot for it? Lightmouse (talk) 11:34, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

New WikiProject

Could a bot please tag all talk pages of articles in sub-categories of Category:People with a template (something like 'This article is within the scope of WikiProject Persondata')? Much appreciated for WikiProject Persondata. Auroranorth (!) 11:43, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

I don't think this is the best way to identify all the articles which should have persondata. First there are ~450,000 biographies on WP, almost all of which are already tagged with {{WPBiography}}. Rather than duplicating the effort which has gone into this tagging, the various lists and categories of articles within WPBiography, i.e. Category:FA-Class biography articles, (or a script using them) could be used to generate a list of all biographies without too much effort. Second, unlike most other WikiProjects, which are concerned with the content of the article, WikiProject Persondata would essentially be visiting the article once to add persondata, then not caring about it again (provided the persondata is not vandalised). To me a WikiProject banner on the talk page implies some sort of ongoing commitment to the article. If it was really, really necessary to have some of talk page tag, I would talk to the WPBiography people about adding another maintenance parameter to {{WPBiography}}. Dr pda (talk) 23:08, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for your help. However, using AWB (without logging on) to create a list, and save it to a text file can only hold 10,000 links. Would it be possible for a bot to create a list of all biography articles? I know it's a HUGE ask, but to get started with WikiProject Persondata (and to coordinate a 'drive') we really need a huge list. If a bot could split it up into different pages that may be good too, as we don't want one huge list, of course. Thanks, Auroranorth (!) 03:29, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Invalid XML/HTML Entity Fix

There appear to be some invalid XML entities such as

&#0xfeff;

that occur on older pages which make XML parsing of Wikipedia difficult.

(See User_talk:Fvw#Your_signature and Wikipedia:Help_desk#Invalid_XML_entities)

Would it be possible to create a bot that would either remove invalid/unparsed entities or encode the leading ampersand as &amp; so that they are not parsed? Thanks. Pkalmar (talk) 23:11, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Do you just want it removed? Actually do you just want [[User:Fvw|&#0xfeff;]] removed? -- maelgwn - talk 02:18, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
Removing it would work, but it seems like it would be a safer solution to just HTML/XML encode the leading ampersand of invalid entities. This way the displayed text would not be altered, but the back end source would no longer be invalid. I've already modified my code that I am using to parse Wikipedia to handle the case of this specific user, but it seems to me that it would be helpful for potential parsers down the road to have things encoded properly all across Wikipedia.Pkalmar (talk) 02:55, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
The bad signatures I have inspected (for example [1]) say [[User:Fvw|&#0xfeff;]]--[[User:fvw|fvw]][[User talk:Fvw|<SMALL><FONT COLOR="green">*</FONT></SMALL>]]. I think the unneeded [[User:Fvw|&#0xfeff;]] should be removed as you suggest. Then we can see whether other stray &#0xfeff; are left and should get another treatment. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:57, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
I will remove them now because we dont actually want this to be displayed. It is probably an artifact from the olden days. -- maelgwn - talk 03:02, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned images check throught Category:Digimon media

Is it possible for a bot to run an orphaned images check through Category:Digimon media or more specifically, through the images that are still linked to the soft-directed articles within Category:Digimon by level? All those articles are now soft redirect but there are now a lot of orphaned nonfree images out there (I've personally gotten about 50 myself fairly quickly). There is also a problem is almost of them in regards to the article backlinks but the orphaned images problem are enough for now. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 02:24, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Redirect Template

I've recently created a template that I am still testing. The point of this template is to list redirects that link to a section of the article. That way, if the section name is changed, the template can be checked in order to see if a redirect went to the section that was renamed. Anyone up for that? Can someone else also check the template cause this is my first time really making one from scratch. The Placebo Effect (talk) 19:17, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

I think it would make more sense to have the bot just alert people when they break a link. The continuing effort required to maintain an accurate list of redirects on the talk page of each article would be painful. But a bot could definitely scour the redirects every month or so and leave talk page notices when there are broken links. — Carl (CBM · talk) 19:20, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
To clarify, it ONLY lists ones that point to a specific section of an article, rather than redirects that just point to an article. The Placebo Effect (talk) 19:22, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I'm sorry if I was unclear about that. The problem is that when someone adds a section redirect, they probably won't think to update the template. The same when they change the redirect to point somewhere else. With the template list approach, the bot would spend a lot of time updating the templates when the links aren't broken. I think it makes more sense to only worry about the broken ones. — Carl (CBM · talk) 19:26, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
The bot could check Newpages to see if redirects are created. I only see a bot updaing this (which was not my real intention, it was just to have a bot do a 1-time through) once a month. The Placebo Effect (talk) 19:33, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
As I see it, if there was a list on the talk page of an article, people would expect it to be mostly accurate. So the bot would need to update it more often than once a month. I do think that having a bot look for broken section redirects is a good idea. — Carl (CBM · talk) 19:43, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
The template is still in sandbox mode, so maybe a "This template was last updated on: ~~~~~" could be added. The Placebo Effect (talk) 19:51, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
That would resolve my concerns about people being surprised when the template is out of date. — Carl (CBM · talk) 20:03, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
A variable for last update has been added. The Placebo Effect (talk) 22:03, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
So what are your thoughts on how to proceed? — Carl (CBM · talk) 04:51, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
Why limit it to redirects? Links would need to be updated too. —Random832 16:34, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Request for change to User:ImageBacklogBot

I have run into a small issue with this bot, and would like to discuss a very easy solution. During the approval, it was mentioned that the bot would replace fair use images outside of article space, using Image:Example.jpg, but I don't think that anyone considered the ramifications of this.

What has happened over the past week, is that over 500 pages now have that "test image" on them, ranging from Featured Article supages, portals, infoboxes (transcluded to multiple mainspace articles) templates, navigation templates, and userboxes.

I do not disagree that fair use images should be removed, but replacing them with example.jpg is causing many pages to have a very unprofessional look, and I would like to request that the bot's regex (as seen here) be modified, and instead, the fair use images be replaced with Image:Pix.gif, which is a single pixel, invisible image, that would not disrupt mainspace.

Before this bot began, Example.jpg had 10-20 links at a time, and was an easy way to monitor testing by newcomers, and to monitor vandalism. Now, if you go take a look at the links, there is an extreme amount of cleanup work that is needed, to remove the test image from so many different pages and templates. Simply changing the regex to use the invisible image would solve this issue, and with some work, the Example.jpg page can get back to normal. I discussed this with Cobi briefly via IRC in the bot channel, and he agreed that would be an easy, and non-disruptive solution. It also may be worth evaluating if template space should be left alone, as the templates that use fair use images (such as military logos, [2] and navigation templates, etc.,) are transcluded into article space, and justifies their use. I look forward to input from others, and thank you for attention to this matter. ArielGold 01:41, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

WP:FU #9 is understood to rule out fair use images in templates. Furthermore, if a fair use image were used in a template, it would still need a rationale for every article which used the template, which could be too difficult to maintain. The template you mention, however, is only used in one article. The usual solution for low-use images is to either use the image directly in the article, or pass the image as a parameter to the template; that way it's only used in the article and the template is never flagged. But is this really a fair use image? Gimmetrow 02:57, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
That's fine, I'm not arguing the removal of the fair use images, but just passing along what Cobi and I discussed earlier, and that was just an idea, not a proposed change to the bot. The main issue is the use of Example.jpg, which looks quite unprofessional in mainspace, and could easily be changed to the invisible gif instead, which would allow the bot to function and not have a test image in template/portals/infoboxes, etc. Thanks for clarifying the template issue, though! ArielGold 04:37, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
I agree with what is said, that the Example.jpg is wrong to use, so I would thing that the image should be the Pix.gif mentioned above, as that will give a blank image, while holding the space, but there should be some added lines of text that won't let it run on pages like Wikipedia:Featured pictures and subpages, and the like. <DREAMAFTER> <TALK> 22:40, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
So what is the procedure to get the bot's code changed? Sorry, but I'm pretty unfamiliar with the bot process, other than reading through approval requests now and then, but if I'm posting in the wrong area, and there is another more appropriate page, please let me know and I'd be happy to post there. Thanks for taking a look at this, Dreamafter! ArielGold 06:41, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Well... a very simple bot with a simple job

Hi,

New bot idea/request... a bot that archives the Help Desk every day, as it gets FAR TOO LONG everyday, if users have slow computers, it takes too long to load.

What do you think, if you decline, can you give me the name of the user that should archive the help desk, so that I can bug them to archive it :).

Removal of edits to articlespace pages where text comes from the edit toolbar

If you click on the ninth icon (from the left) in the edit toolbar, you get the following text:

<nowiki>Insert non-formatted text here</nowiki>

which is visible in articles as

Insert non-formatted text here

A google search turns up 5,970 Wikipedia pages with "Insert non-formatted text here" in them. Many are in userspace, and many have been reverted, but an large percentage of articles that I just checked had edits at least a couple of days old, unreverted.

It would be great to have a bot that would revert such edits immediately, and put a note on the editor's talk page that test edits should be done in the sandbox.

And yes, I know there are other phrases that come from the toolbar, such as "Insert footnote text here" (in 20 articles, oddly enough; shouldn't actually be visible to Google), but the "no-formatted text" one seems to be a bigee. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 23:49, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Not all additions are just testing: sometimes, Wikipedians accidentally click the toolbar, or drag icons from the toolbar into the edit box, when making a constructive edit. Toolbar edits get buried under other ones; often, buttons are clicked in conjunction, and instead of Superscript text<nowiki>Insert non-formatted text here</nowiki>, you'll get something like <nowiki>Superscript text</nowiki>. For this reason, a bot probably couldn't remove testing that well. I have a Java program that screen scrapes through articles, looking for multiple regular expressions – perhaps I could post lists onwiki of affected articles so that editors can go through the lists and clean them up. GracenotesT § 02:48, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
I saw something like two cases of constructive edits that contained a mistake as well, in the 20+ cases where I removed toolbar-generated text. Both of those, I think, were from registered editors. If the bot were only to remove IP address edits, the error rate would be virtually zero, I think; certainly a high enough ratio to justify using a bot rather than human beings. If the bot makes one mistake in a hundred, is it really worth having human beings go through the 100 edits to find the good one, as opposed to reverting them all, and expecting the good editor to deal with the problem. Particularly because the bot would notify editors that their edit had been reverted.
As you can see, I'm not a big fan of the "put out a list of errors and editors will come approach. Cluebot isn't 100% correct, I assume, but it's immensely valuable in vandal-fighting, for example. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 14:18, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
  • No-no-no-no, bots shouldn't remove such things automatically. Instead, a human should check histories of every suspicious page and revert/remove vandalism because editing tests not always end with clicking a single button. I've went throught first 15 pages of wikisearch for this phrase and reverted a hell of vandalism. MaxSem(Han shot first!) 16:42, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Check for & insert template onto Greater Manchester talk pages

WikiProject Greater Manchester is gearing up for article assessment. Is there a bot that could check the talk pages of all articles in Category:Greater Manchester and its child categories, inserting {{WikiProject Greater Manchester|importance=|class=}} where that template is absent?

I've had a reasonably good look through all of the subcategories, and found only three which have non-Manchester content in them:

In the event of false positives, their categorisation as unclassed will lead in due course to a manual inspection & hence rectification. Thanks in advance. --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:59, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

I'll run my bot through them. It's currently pretty random, so I can't really say which areas it is and isn't doing. Tomorrow I'll set it up for the rest, if I have time. Thanks Redrocketboy 03:46, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
That's excellent; thanks. It's found 475 new articles for the project. Woot, if I may say so. --Tagishsimon (talk) 08:37, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
Well technically, I found the articles (well, I just copied a dump of pages from the category and set it going). I'll set it up to do the rest soon. Redrocketboy 14:19, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
I'm not going to step into a dispute between you and your bot. Thanks for doing another chunk, you two. --Tagishsimon (talk) 13:39, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
Unfortunately it tagged a load of Manchester united and other unrelated articles for some reason. I'm going to have to write something that will undo mass accidents like that ;) Redrocketboy 15:07, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

Wikiproject member list maintenance

I have resurrected this request from the archives as it has not been acted on successfully. Can someone create or add to a bot that would do the following:

  1. Compile a list of users by scraping links to the User namespace from a particular page (ie a WikiProject participants list) (the "members")
  2. Periodically scrape recent changes from a list of pages, as defined by links present on another page (ie a Project Watchlist, pages in category, etc) (the "watched pages")
  3. Search for recent edits by each user made to those watched pages
  4. Thereby generate a list of all members sorted by their most recent edit to the watched pages.

I'm sure that with some imaginative coding, server pressure could be kept to a minimum. Any takers? Happymelon 14:05, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

I thought I did this. it must have been a different project. βcommand 06:12, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
While what you did was extremely helpful, it wasn't quite what I asked for, and still requires a lot of manual intervention to yield any useful result. If you could write a bot/database query to do exactly what's asked for above, I would be very grateful. Happymelon 11:42, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

Check for & insert template onto United Kingdom talk pages

This is an almost exacting request per the above (for Greater Manchester) but for WikiProject UK Geography (I've just learned of this page and how effective the work is!)

Could a bot be developed/tasked with the objective of checking the talk pages of all articles in Category:Geography of the United Kingdom and Category:Environment of the United Kingdom and their child categories, inserting {{WPUKgeo|importance=|class=}} where that template is absent? The main subcategory the project would benefit from would be Category:Settlements in the United Kingdom, if there is some problem (such as time or scale) with targetting the others.

I hope this would be possible! Thanks in advance, -- Jza84 · (talk) 21:46, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

OK, it's on my to-do list, but if anyone else can, please do :) Redrocketboy 21:56, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
Unfortunately, it would not be feasible for me to do this. There's far too many categories containing non-related pages which I'd have to manually remove, and since I'm unfamiliar with the project, it'll be rather hard going. Sorry about that. Redrocketboy 15:56, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

WP: in Template namespace

WP: was recently made a redirect of Wikipedia:, causing any template with the syntax {{WP:FOO}} to no longer transclude Template:WP:FOO but instead to transclude Wikipedia:FOO. All templates beginning with WP: need to be moved from Template:WP:FOO to Template:WP FOO and the transclusions on the actual pages need to be fixed by a bot. List available here. Some of the transclusions have been fixed manually; probably wouldn't be the worst idea to still move those templates and update the transclusions as well.... Cheers. --MZMcBride (talk) 08:37, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

OK I will start working through these. The first 4 on the list will be done shorrtly. -- maelgwn - talk 12:01, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Inline references occuring before punctuation or after but with a space inbetween

For inline references, I think the reference is supposed to occur after adjacent punctuation marks and without a space in between. Frequently, a reference occurs after a punctuation mark but with a space between the two, or alternatively, before the punctuation mark. A bot that could correct this or incorporate this into it's current functions would be nice. --Seans Potato Business 10:12, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

While not a bot, a script you can add to your monobook does this, copy the following into your monobook.js,
importScript('User:Gimmetrow/fixRefs.js');
This adds a link in your toolbox called "Fix reference marks". Note that per WP:FOOT, either a space between punctuation and the reference, or the reference placed immediately next to punctuation is correct. This script uses the latter, and is helpful when there is a mix of reference mark styles on a page, as well as when there are spaces between references. I'm not sure that a bot would be appropriate, simply because there is no consensus to prefer one style over the other. ArielGold 10:19, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

CommaBot

I'm just throwing this out there, but would it be possible to create a bot that would fix commas in articles when they are used, like, this? A bot to help out ACC

We could use a bot at WP:ACC, that perhaps could query the database for maybe the top 5-10 top hits in antispoof, to aid us in creating new accounts.

For instance, say, a user requests User:One, and, MW returns that it's similar to User:ONE, as the first hit. MW does NOT return, User:0ne, whom may well be an established editor. Neither would Special:Listusers/One. We could really use a bot, that would use the antispoof patterns, and, return what users are similar, using {{ACC|s|user|X edits: Last edit made on XX/XX/XXXX}}. Just 5-10 would suffice. (see: This discussion)

Thanks! SQLQuery me! 04:49, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

RfBs

Currently, it seems RfBs do not get added to the Tangobot analysis table. Tangotango states he won't be making any improvements to it. Would it therefore be possible for someone to create a new bot that updates information for both RFAs and RFBs? Thanks. Redrocketboy 07:29, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

There aren't that many RfB these days and I think whoever is interested can just goto the main page to look at the current status. --WinHunter (talk) 08:13, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
You could very well say the same for RfAs - "whoever is interested can just goto the main page to look at the current status". Redrocketboy 08:19, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
There have been about four RfBs this year, and they are usually much more high profile than RfAs. Meanwhile there have been a lot of RfAs this year, which can be much harder to keep track of. --MZMcBride (talk) 04:00, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Still, it would be helpful, to have RFB's listed below on the table at WP:RFB.... SQLQuery me! 04:42, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
Actually, there's been a lot of RfBs this year. I've only stumbled upon some RfBs by accident, and came across at least one because I now have RfA watchlisted. Not everyone watchlists or checks RfA, and it would be very handy to have the RfBs in the summaries. Acalamari 19:21, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
Indeed, there have been four successful RfBs, with another 18 unsuccessful (which I have to admit was higher than I thought it'd be). They're still much rarer than RfAs, but it'd still be nice if they were included in the table. EVula // talk // // 20:10, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Word count and SMOG grade

I'd like to see a bot that would go through articles under peer review and calculate word counts and SMOG grades (and possibly other statistics as well), excluding things that Wikipedia:Article length does not count as "readable prose". These would then be presented -- along with the revision number from which they were last taken -- on the peer reviews. It could also add comments such as the following:

  • Under 200 words: "This article seems to be a stub."
  • Over 10,000 words: "This article seems to be too long and probably needs to be split."
  • Smog index under 7: "Longer words and more compound or complex sentences may make this article more interesting, more precise and less wordy."
  • Smog index over 16: "This article seems to have too many long words and sentences for even most university graduates to easily read and understand."

It doesn't seem to me like this would be too hard. NeonMerlin 01:33, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

This would be a nice tool; the main difficulty I see is getting it to ignore wiki code and mathematics, which shouldn't be counted. It might be more convenient for the tool to run from a web page; you type in the name and it returns the SMOG grade. Is there a library available that computes the grade for a given piece of text? — Carl (CBM · talk) 17:14, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
I used my linkchecker code base and hacked on the functionality that you requested. The SMOG thing wasn't easy to implement since its rather hard to figure out how many sentences there in an article. You can see it in action on the tool server. It pretty much confirms that Wikipedia's written at college student level. —Dispenser (talk) 05:22, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Bot to convert templates to an better-practice template, on a regular basis

Just saw that people at Template:ArticleHistory/Deprecation think that it would be useful to have a bot convert instances of some of the templates that people add to an article's talk regarding its history into {{ArticleHistory}}, in such a way that the bot would just go through and regularize the simpler-input templates that ArticleHistory kind-of-deprecates into the better-practice template that it is. The idea, I suppose, would be to run it once a week or something. I'm just handing along the message, this is clearly a bot-compatible task. Nihiltres{t.l} 01:00, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

could you be more descriptive? βcommand 01:19, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
At the page listed above, a number of templates are noted to be entirely superfluous to ArticleHistory. As such it would be useful to have a bot to convert instances of these templates to ArticleHistory, expanding one already on a page, if necessary. I'm actually working on such a bot right now - it'll be ready for trial in the not too distant future. Happymelon 12:05, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
Nothing wrong with a clone, but there is a bot which converts various talk page templates over to AH. This is a difficult sort of task to fully automate; each template is used in a handful of strange ways that would require fairly extensive error-checking if not done by hand. Furthermore, it's not exactly clear that converting certain templates is worth the effort; many of the pages have no other template, so AH doesn't compress anything. We've held off doing most of these for a reason. Gimmetrow 20:32, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
Tell me about it :D - just writing a function to standardise the dozen or so possible date formats is giving me a headache! My indended startpoint is a list formed from an intersection of Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:ArticleHistory and Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:GA, etc - pages which contain articlehistory and other templates. Once that list's cleared I'd work more intersections to find pages with more than one content template. Finally, pages with only one content template to be converted are, as you say, only barely worth the effort, but I'd probably be on a roll by then, so if I ever get there I might as well go the whole hog :D. Straight Edge Superstar 22:15, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

I think that adding a delete tag to all new pages that match keywords is a bit presumptuous. I do think the idea is good though but i think it might be better to simply add a tag of some description. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pi (talkcontribs) 23:42, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
well, I mean any tag that would alert an admin to check it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by PayneXKiller (talkcontribs) 00:14, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
We already have a process (for example, see Wikipedia:New pages patrol) to check all new articles; it's not at all clear why a bot is needed, except to identify the articles that were missed. (Discussed elsewhere, earlier, I think.) And as far as "alerting admins" to check problem pages, that's not the way we do things here - regular editors can fix most things themselves. If page really does need to be deleted, the first step normally is for a regular editor to tag it as such - that way, admins can focus on deleting problem pages identified by others. (For example, problem pages in user space can simply be blanked; deletion isn't needed.) -- John Broughton (♫♫) 15:13, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Incorrect Ref Syntax

Resolved

This is a request for a bot to clean up incorrect usage of "ref" tags in conjunction with URLs. For instance, sometimes people add the following reference: <ref name=autogenerated1>[http://www.google.com Google<!-- Bot generated title -->]</ref> This results in the following: Some statement.[1]

  1. ^ Cite error: The named reference autogenerated1 was invoked but never defined (see the help page).

As you can see, this is not helpful at all. Because of the opening and closing brackets, we have a reference that simply shows [1]. If the user had added the website correctly (<ref name=autogenerated1 />, without the brackets), the reference would show correctly.[1]

Thus, this request is for a bot to find instances where the REF tag displays a URL number and fix it. My guess is that there are several thousand of these. Timneu22 (talk) 15:10, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Unless somebody has a simple way of doing this (AWB comes to mind) I'll give it a shot. BJTalk 15:52, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Well the toolserver's DB clone can't be used so a full database download is needed and I'm in no position to do it on this laptop. If somebody can run the SQL query on a local copy of the DB I will write the bot. BJTalk 16:36, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Surely a much better use of the bot's time would be to create a list of these articles so the plain URLs can be converted to {{cite web}} format. A simple URL is not considered an acceptable reference per WP:V and WP:CITE, so why bother fixing these when they can be used as flags to mark where further work is needed? Happymelon 18:55, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Excellent point, in that case no bot work is needed as the lists can be pulled with SQL. BJTalk 19:13, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
If somebody wonder what what the URL matching characters are not [ ] < > " \s for the regular [http:// ] style. For the visible link is a bit more complicated, not . , \\ : ; ? ! [ ] < > " \s with a special case for ( ) where they much appear in pairs. A further complication is the way MediaWiki handle the bold (''') and italics ('') where transformed to their HTML equivalents and then does the link parsing. I propose the follow AWB regex:
Find (regex, case insensitive):
    (<ref[^</>]*> *)(http|https|ftp)://([^\[\]<>'"\(\)\s]+[^\.,\\:;\?!\[\]<>"\s\(\)'])( *</ref>)
Replace:
    $1[$2://$3]$4
With some creatively you should be able to list the domain name (i.e. example.org) if you wanted too. —Dispenser (talk) 19:05, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
So I'm confused... what is the resolution (or proposed resolution)? Thanks Timneu22 (talk) 19:58, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Whoops, looks like I simplified it too much. The second pattern is what can't be at the end, I've updated the sample. Can't test it since my copy of AWB is broken (it doesn't replace the backrefernces), but I'm pretty sure it'll work. This is entirely possible to do with only AWB. The list can be generated through database dumps parsed by AWB or by a wiki search. AWB diffDispenser (talk) 21:29, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Dispenser, I think that's going opposite what Timneu22 was suggesting. Regardless, none of <ref>http://website</ref>, <ref>[http://website]</ref> or <ref>[http://website website]</ref> are much closer to an author/title/date citation than the others. If author/title/date are not going to be added, why not just leave it as [http://website] without <ref> tags? Gimmetrow 21:50, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Oh, I missed read that. Then the regex would be:
Find (regex, case insensitive):
    (<ref[^</>]*>) *\[(http|https|ftp)://([^\[\]<>'"\(\)\s]+[^\.,\\:;\?!\[\]<>"\s\(\)']) *\] *(</ref>)
Replace:
    $1 $2://$3 $4
But that of course make parsing pages harder, causes horizonal scroll bars to appear, screws rendering in multi-column view, sorta break my tool, and provides the same information that appears when you hover over a link. —Dispenser (talk) 22:08, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Find (regex, case insensitive):
    (<ref[^</>]*> *\[(http|https|ftp)://([^/]*?|)([^./]*)\.([^/\d]{2,6})(/[^\[\]<>'"\(\)\s]*)) *(\] *</ref>)
Replace:
    $1 <!--autotitle:-->$4.$5$7
That will give slashdot style titles [3]. There problems with using the web page <title> too, xkcd, for example, uses the same title on each page. —Dispenser (talk) 22:44, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Including a "raw" URL can break the reference section by extending the screen too much (especially with two columns). It would be better to make the title of the URL its HTML <title>, rather than simply display the full URL (http:// and all). GracenotesT § 22:11, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Yes, use the HTML "title" element. Sure, there are some sites where this isn't useful, but on others, like the Washington Post, it's pretty close to the actual article title. We don't need perfection (though) that would be nice - we just need to be continually improving things. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 23:42, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
Just to let you know : Following this, I've written a pywikipedia-based script (working from a dump) which replace all bad refs (link, with or without brackets) by [url html_title] when content-type is text/html. I'm currently testing it on the French wikipedia, and I'm waiting for some more feedback from the French Village Pump, before any further steps. I might later need some code review... NicDumZ ~ 11:45, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
If this works, it seems like this could be a "perma-bot" that always goes around looking for these incorrect tags. Timneu22 (talk) 14:16, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
I had positive feedback from the French Village Pump ; my first tests on the French wiki went fine... RfA is on its way !!

Project tagging: category talk pages

Resolved

Would someone with a bot approved to tag talk pages with project banners do the following:

As some of the talk pages may already be tagged, the bot should probably check for the tag's presence before editing a page. Thanks, Black Falcon (Talk) 22:02, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

Sure. Working on it now. Seems simple enough. PaievDiscuss! 03:50, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

A few bot requests

Resolved

Got a few requests here, one of which would probably be a brand new bot.

  1. Can somebody have their bot go through Category:College football and add {{WikiProject College football|class=|importance=}} to them (please exclude Category:British Collegiate American Football League teams and Category:American football teams in Mexico)? I was doing this with AWB but there appears to be a lot more than I expected.
  2. Take those unassessed articles and if there is another project that has assessed those articles, apply those rating to WPCFB (BetacommandBot?).
  3. Ok, new bot. This would make the jobs of those that help administer a WikiProject keep the members page in line. Many projects have an active user list and an inactive user list. After you get a lot of members, that can be hard to maintain. I would like to have a list of all members on a subpage and have a bot go through that list and get that user's last contribution date and then order them by last contribution date. Even better, for whatever project, take that project's main category (in my case Category:College football) and create a list of all articles and if the editor has made a contribution in the last x months, find the last contribution date of an article in that category list. The last part would just be icing, but the overall last contribution date would be helpful. (How does WP:MILHIST keep their list to up-to-date?)↔NMajdantalk 21:06, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
your not going to like this, but BCBot can do all of that. :) βcommand 21:11, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
BCBot will shortly be posting a list of categories that are under College football. Please remove all that should not be tagged and then post back here. (the list will be found here) βcommand 21:16, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
The two cats I don't want included are under Category:College football teams. Don't know how deep your bot is going. So your bot can do the user thing I mentioned? What the procedure for that? Thanks.↔NMajdantalk 21:49, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
I just need a list of users, and BCBot is going to give a list of cats that are 4 levels deep. (its not done yet) you will want to review that list as more is in that category than you think. βcommand 21:51, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
Believe me, I know full well how large a category list four deep of that main cat is going to being. Sorry for being impatient, couldn't tell if that list was complete yet or not. I'll work on the list of users. What format do you need? Just named or [[User:Nmajdan]] or {{User|Nmajdan}}?↔NMajdantalk 21:54, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
as for the users it does not matter, and the list of cats are done now. βcommand 21:57, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
Working on editing your list now. There's some cats in there that shouldn't be so I may have to address that later. The list of users is up at Wikipedia:WikiProject College football/Participant List/Full list. Thanks.↔NMajdantalk 22:06, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
I hate to ask you to do this, but can you rerun your script and exclude Category:NCAA Division I-A football conferences. Its that category that is adding a bunch of basketball, soccer, ice hockey, etc categories.22:10, 31 December 2007 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nmajdan (talkcontribs)
see Wikipedia:WikiProject College football/Participant List/Full list/Sorted and BCBot is re-running the list now. βcommand 22:21, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
Ok, I have edited the list. That definitely took out a lot of cats that didn't need to be there. Thanks.↔NMajdantalk 22:39, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
BCBot has started the tag run, when that is done Ill do the the other part of your request. and that should finish up this BOTREQ. βcommand 23:13, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

BC, it doesn't appear that a lot of the articles got tagged. Not sure why. I started going through my list again with AWB and have tagged 70 additional articles and I'm still only in the Fs. I have exported a list of articles to go through at User:Nmajdan/Test. Of course, most of these should be tagged but there are obviously some that are not. Can you have your bot go through this list and tag articles with {{WikiProject College football|class=}} and then rerun the bot to assess the articles that already have another rating. Thanks.↔NMajdantalk 21:18, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Well, it definitely tagged a lot more articles than I expected (around 5000). Has the assessment bot ran since the tagging bot completed? Anyway, one final request before we close this. Might as well go through Category:College football coaches and Category:College football players and subdirectories and tag those articles with {{WPBiography|sports-work-group=yes|class=|living=}}.↔NMajdantalk 15:38, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
the bot's tag run was stopped short im restarting that now. Im going to run the autostub shortly after that. βcommand 15:40, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
There's more? Wow. Ok, great. The WPBio request is more for their sake so its a low priority. Thanks.↔NMajdantalk 15:51, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Has the assessment bot been ran yet?↔NMajdantalk 14:13, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
Don't forget my plugin was written mostly for WPBio, and will avoid double tagging due to redirects etc. --kingboyk (talk) 16:21, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

RedAlertBot

Resolved

how about a bot that will put a message on people's talk pages telling them that they have put a red link on a page? Jordan Morrison Payne 02:38, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

I don't see that as being helpful - many redlinks are intentional. — Carl (CBM · talk) 02:52, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

a) explain why they would be intentional. b) it could have a !noalert! in the same way SineBot has a !nosine! Jordan Morrison Payne 03:06, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Removal of WP:CFB importance rating from tag on talk pages

Resolved

WikiProject College football recently decided to eliminate the importance rating from the project tag on the talk page. As part of this, we would like to remove the "|importance=(low|mid|high|top|<empty>)" part from the talk page to help prevent confusion from people that may think this functionality still works, and prevent any articles from being warred over that "it should be high/it should be mid" when it doesn't even matter anymore. We have 9000+ articles (see Wikipedia:WikiProject College football/Assessment that should be checked. This would be a one-time run. No hurry in completion, editing 2/minute for several nights for several days would be perfectly fine. Should not start for a week (Jan 10) to allow any project members to object at the last second. MECUtalk 13:59, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

If the functionality has been removed from the template I fail to see why this is a good use of 9000 database write queries. Surely at the slightest hint of edit warring you can just remove the parameter from that particular page and note that they no longer work! Happymelon 15:09, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Correct. Just deprecate it from the template; the concerns OP raises aren't enough to justify that many edits imho. Of course, if a bot ever hits those talk pages for another reason he can be programmed to remove that parameter at the same time. --kingboyk (talk) 16:16, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
Hmn... I've just had what I'm sure is not a new idea: wouldn't it be helpful to have a page somewhere that contained a simple list of conversions to check for when editing pages. A module could easily be written in various languages that checks for these phrases and inserts the relevant conversion when it gets a hit. Keep it simple and fast, and loads of bots could use it to perform these little checks whenever they're editing a page anyway. That way when we get a request like this, we can say "no, but we'll add it to the todo list". Thoughts? Happymelon 20:55, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I think it is a good idea. I have had a similar one myself. I think AWB's standard fixes achieves a similar thing. -- maelgwn - talk 11:36, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
But their general fixes are bot safe something like this would have to be done by users, I've proposed a feature that would allow for collaborative that would fix standard issues. But AWB's developers seem a swamped. I suppose that if there was more support that this request would have a higher priority. —Dispenser (talk) 00:08, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

? a bot to convert {{Somerset}} to {{WikiProject Somerset}}

Resolved

Wikipedia:WikiProject Somerset has 1659 assessed pages with class and importance ratings. Due to my initial stupidity some of these have {{Somerset}} which was later converted, by someone wiser to {{WikiProject Somerset}}. Would it be possible for a bot to convert {{Somerset}} to {{WikiProject Somerset}} without affecting the class & importance ratings (or the nesting of project banners) on article talk pages? I would like at a later date to create a template for the county using Template:County with the title Template:Somerset in line with other counties in England eg Template:Greater Manchester, Template:Warwickshire, Template:Cheshire, Template:Cumbria, Template:Merseyside, Template:Lancashire, Template:Wiltshire. I can't do that at present because the name is taken & I don't want to just delete the current template as this would affect over 1000 articles & mean a lot of work. Any help or advice appreciated.— Rod talk 12:48, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Easily done with AWB. Ordinarily this would be declined as "no conceivable benefit" but I see you want to reuse the name {{Somerset}}. I suggest you create the new template in a sandbox, when that's done I'll do a bot run for you (or arrange for somebody else to do it) and move the new template into position. Let me know on my talk page when you're ready. --kingboyk (talk) 16:14, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Automatic listing of RFC is broken.

Resolved

Automatic listing of RFC appears to be broken. See all of the complaints at Wikipedia_talk:Requests_for_comments. My own listing for Chocolate Thai appears to be tagged just as it should be, but several hours later, it hasn't been listed. If the bot is up, but it takes several hours to be listed, then RFC policy should be changed to allow manual tagging.

I've heard that this is all largely done by BetaCommandBot, so I contacted the bot's owner User:Betacommand. I don't see any other bots that do this on the list of active bots. Zenwhat (talk) 04:17, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Would it be possible for a bot to get all the subcats in this category (i.e. every category in its category tree), and put them on a page, e.g. Wikipedia:WikiProject Golf/Categories, with no duplicates? In addition to this, could the {{WikiProject Golf}} template be placed onto all talk pages in these subcategories where there is no template? It would be fantastic if this could happen. Thanks! Replacing one template with two

This should be an easy one!

Template:Aircontent currently includes "See also" material, as well as a navbox: Template:Aviation lists. WikiProject Aircraft is considering separating these templates so that the "See also" material in "Aircontent" can be moved further up the page to its more customary location, while leaving the navbox at the bottom of the page.

To do this, we'd need a bot to replace every instance of {{aircontent}} with {{aircontent}} {{aviation lists}} and "Related content" with "See also". Who's got the bot for the job if we decide to proceed? --Rlandmann (talk) 00:09, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

The templates would be easy. I would have to test a bit to make sure the "Related content" -> "See also" worked. Since this would involve more than 3000 articles, if there is anything else that could be automatically, this would be a good time to do it. Gimmetrow 05:18, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Abridged noticeboards

There have been repeated complaints about the length of the noticeboards, esp. by dial-up users and others with a slow connection, see here for more. My idea was to have an abridged page, something like Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard (abridged) that would transclude WP:AN. A set of <noinclude> tags would then be used on WP:AN, and all a bot would need to be able to do is move the </noinclude> tag according to the number of H2 headers; the opening <noinclude> tag would stay fixed at the top of the page. I would guess the abridged version would contain about 8 H2's. Any thoughts? --MZMcBride (talk) 13:58, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

That's a great idea. I'll can start work on the bot in a few hours. east.718 at 14:00, January 2, 2008
Easier idea using an existing bot: Have WP:AN archived by MiszaBot to Wikipedia:Administrator's noticeboard/Older, leaving 8 headers behind. Have Wikipedia:Administrator's noticeboard/Older archived to the normal archives by the same bot. WP:AN then only contains a short collection of headers, but Wikipedia:Administrator's noticeboard/Extended, which transcludes both AN and AN/O, remains at the full length. Comments? Happymelon 14:16, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
I think it's been pretty well determined that people want to keep WP:AN the same as it has been for the time being. --MZMcBride (talk) 14:27, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
Additionally, I don't think people would be too excited about having to constantly switch between editing AN and AN/O to discuss a steadily aging thread. east.718 at 14:34, January 2, 2008

Is it possible to get a bot to replace indented and italic text at the top of pages, like:

This article is about X, for Y, see Z
:''This article is about X, for Y, see [[Z]]''

with the appropriate dablink template (in this case {{otheruses4}}, but there's a number of different ones):

{{otheruses4|X|Y|Z}}

The templates use a div with a css style class to indent, so make Wikipedia a bit more skinnable. This is really quite low priority, but if this can be given to a bot which is already doing something similar it would be a good thing to do. --h2g2bob (talk) 16:16, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

you might want to ask SmackBot. βcommand 16:25, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
This is a bit of a pig, since there's no easy way of identifying which pages are affected until after you load them. Shame there isn't a way of loading just the first three characters of a page... that I know of, anyway. Happymelon 15:16, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Cleaning up the use of Biography templates

Currently, there is confusing use of three templates for the different Dictionary of Australian Biography and Australian Dictionary of Biography. Up to now, the {{Tl|Australian Dictionary of Biography}} redirected to {{Tl|Dictionary of Australian Biography}}. I have now replaced the redirect with source code plus a warning sign asking to replace "{{Australian Dictionary of Biography|" with "{{Dictionary of Australian Biography|"! Thus, I request that a bot does this, even though less than 50 articles are affected, and one could handle this manually.

The next step though, a move of {{Tl|ADB}} to {{Tl|Australian Dictionary of Biography}}, involves hundreds of articles. See [[Template talk:ADB]] and related talk.-- Matthead  DisOuß   08:05, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Fair-use in non-mainspace

I've run across a couple of fair-use images that were being used in the userspace, usually by accident of someone who created an article in the userspace adn then copy/paste moved it, or who don't know our general policy against non-free media outside the mainspace. I'd like a bot that could scan the fair-use/non-free image categories and pick up file-links to non-mainspace pages, and then add a cleanup category/template. I know nothing of programming, but do use AWB and would be willing to learn how to run it under another interface (and bot-username), if a more experienced user could code it. Thanks. MBisanz talk 20:17, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

I think Betacommandbot does this, among many other image-related things, although I'm not sure. Regarding AWB, the bot function is no different to the normal interface, except that it automatically saves every X seconds (so if you're confident you've got all the settings right, you can go away and have a cup of tea and come back 500 articles later). Happymelon 21:26, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
I went through all the things BCB's been approved for here [4] and I didn't see this as one of the tasks he's been approved for. MBisanz talk 21:56, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
You're right - BCB does so many things in the image namespace I thought this was covered too. Well AWB is not really the best task for this - I would personally code a bot in python making use of pywikipedia. For something like this you can use the MediaWiki api to easily (and very quickly) enumerate links to any image - something like http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=backlinks&bltitle=Main%20Page&blnamespace=1%7C2%7C3%7C4%7C5%7C6%7C7%7C8%7C9%7C10%7C11%7C12%7C13%7C14%7C15%7C100%7C101&bllimit=500] will give you all links from the main page, for instance, in non-mainspace. Happymelon 22:28, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
That sounds good...but I'm an accountant and have no real understanding of coding things. I was hoping someone here could code it in a turnkey style. MBisanz talk 22:42, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
BJBot already is approved for this (I'm planning on making a full run in a few days). 3 other bots are also approved for the same task so I don't think we need any more. BJTalk 22:55, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Micronesia tagging request

I would request that articles in the following categories be tagged with the appropriate version of {{WikiProject Melanesia}}. In the event that an article appears in more than grouping, I would request that the appropriate work group tags be added to a single banner, if possible.

General Melanesia tagging

Finally, please add this code {{WikiProject Melanesia|class=|importance=}} on pages which do not already have the banner on pages in the categories below.

I'm starting with this section right now, to make sure I have everything fine-tuned. SQLQuery me! 17:59, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Final question

This is being asked out of ignorance on my part. Do the bots you all operate have the facility to just add a specific term to an existing banner as well, provided it isn't already there? Like the national group tags above? There are going to be a few more multi-national tagging requests in the near future, and it would be useful to know. Thanks again. John Carter (talk) 16:46, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

My bot can do anything you dream up. Also do not use subpages. βcommand 00:28, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Unfortunately, the instructions above clearly say to do so. But it is nice to know, particularly for the upcoming Polynesia tagging, which will basically be more of the same. John Carter (talk) 19:07, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Ive fixed the instructions, I can also generate a list of subcats very easily for you if you want. βcommand 19:40, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou (bowing obsequiously). Such a list would be extremely useful. I can probably work on the Polynesia project, but subcat lists for the various work groups of the yet to be addressed Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa would probably be extremely welcome. I've completed this task. :) SQLQuery me! 03:32, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Adding all articles from a project to the page

Can a bot add WP:F&S's 540 articles to Wikipedia:WikiProject Fraternities and Sororities/Watchlist? I want the page to look like Wikipedia:WikiProject_The_Simpsons/Watchlist, so that we can keep track of articles related to F&S. Thanks. miranda 11:20, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Got the list of articles / images / templates / cats up for you, like the simpsons one. Formatting's up to you :). Enjoy! SQLQuery me! 15:45, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Midnight update

This one's reeeeeeaaly simple, but I'd like it added to a bot that runs continuously rather than MelonBot, which is decidedly on-and-off. Wikipedia:TFD/T is supposed to be a shortcut for "Templates for deletion/Today", and so currently points to Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2008 January 7. I'd very much like this to be bot updated to always point to the current day's TfD archive. The archives are named very systematically (four-digit-year, full-spelt-month, date-unpadded), so this should be an absolute doddle to add to any suitable bot. I've tried using variables in the redirect path, but it doesn't work for some reason. Any chance of this being done?? Happymelon 21:26, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Ok that should go but if it breaks you'll have to use the stop thingo and I might not get back to it for a while (wikibreak) -- maelgwn - talk 11:27, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Automatic clean-up notifications

Hi there, following this discussion, I've come here to see if anyone can help. Essentially, I was wondering if there was a way to be notified if any article tagged by a certain WikiProject has a cleanup tag added to it? From this, ideally it would be great to be able to make an automatic to-do list - the problem at the moment is that cleanup tags are being added to articles and no one knows about it until they happen to come across the article. Any help or ideas would be great. Many thanks, Seaserpent85 14:13, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

EditorBot

I created the User:EditorBot account so that someone could use it to create articles on French municipalities. Could someone do this for me? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Editorofthewiki (talkcontribs) 00:10, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

This can be done. We need more details. What do you want the pages to say? Is their a list of articles to be created?-- maelgwn - talk 01:33, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
Good! As far as I know, there is no 1 list that we can use, but there is many "Communes in BLANK Department" articles. The article should look something like this (with Banyuls-dels-Aspres as an example:

with Insee and the French Wikipedia being a source. I'm sure interiwiki bots will cover that problem, although it would be great in we do it via the editbot. We could also create articles on cantons.Editorofthewiki (talk) 02:42, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

See cat fr:Catégorie:Commune de France for a complete list. I'm not sure that this would be a good idea, thought. Notability !! There are no inclusion guidelines for Communes in the French project. I'd say that any country town could get an article. This is a non sense, and this would be a bad idea to automatically create articles from the French articles. NicDumZ ~ 08:50, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Assessment

I am getting assessment up for WikiProject Green Bay Packers, right now about 98% of the articles just have {{GreenBayPackersProject}}. My request is that someone can assess the Category:Unassessed-Class Green Bay Packers articles by using the following standards:
Replacing {{GreenBayPackersProject}} with {{GreenBayPackersProject|class=}}

  • If the article is already rated by another WikiProject, then {{GreenBayPackersProject|class="Same Class"}} (Where "Same Class" is substituted with the already assessed class).
  • If article is not assessed by any other WikiProject, then {{GreenBayPackersProject|class=}}.
  • If it is a category, template, image, or not an article, then {{GreenBayPackersProject|class=NA}}.
  • If already assessed by {{GreenBayPackers Project}} then disregard.
  • If two WikiProjects have assessed the article differently, then {{GreenBayPackersProject|class=}} .

If you have any questions feel free to ask. Thanks in advance.

Working on it... Mønobi 00:46, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Um no offense but I wasn't asking for you to go and create a bot for this. I just needed someone with a bot to do this work. So I respectfully ask that someone else fill this request as waiting for a bot request to go through seems a little much for such a small request as this.
Gonzo fan2007 talkcontribs 02:00, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Oh no, :) it took me less then 1 hr to make it, and I can use it for future request. Mønobi 02:33, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
You can keep on doing it if everything is working right, I just thought it would take longer than it did. :-)
Gonzo fan2007 talkcontribs 02:51, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
I guess its working again, so nevermind.
