Goþic Niȝt

You had blocked Goþic Niȝt (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) as a sock. Should Goþic Niȝt's edits be undone? Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 05:55, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'll defer to your judgment. As a banned user they certainly can be, but I would not recommend a blind rollback. -- zzuuzz (talk) 06:57, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea what Goþic Niȝt was up to. Some are IPA/pronunciation changes of which I have no idea, some seem to have broken formatting such as this edit to Luri Language. Khazars - is he really proficient in all those languages? It gives me headaches to make sense of it. -Lazy American upbringing... Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 08:36, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You are not the only one with a headache. A lot of their edits have been reverted in the past, but often by their own socks - for a good example of their editing, check out all the blocked users here. -- zzuuzz (talk) 08:46, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
No kidding. Only their hair dresser knows for sure. Jim1138 (talk) 09:50, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please delete my edit

Hello, Zzuuzz, I have been leaving an edit summary for every edit I make. Today, I left a message at User talk:Divy(a)95 and forgot to leave an edit summary. Please remove the edit from public view as I want to have 100 percent edits with summaries. Thanks. Don'twasteTime (talk) 12:55, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Unfortunately this is not possible according to policy. However, while leaving edit summaries is very useful, and I'd strongly encourage using one at all times, having a 100% track record is not a very important thing. Mistakes happen sometimes. -- zzuuzz (talk) 13:00, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what this is

I'm not quite sure what I've stumbled into, but is this something you're familiar with? It looks like you blocked some related accounts recently, including 213o129o33o80 fuck you (talk · contribs). NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 09:28, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Nudity and sexuality

Hey zzuuzz -- Are you feel very, very STRICT!!!!! of not putting anything related to nudity, porn and all that?

Am I allow to edit anything I want?--67.100.125.152 (talk) 12:09, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I've explained a number of times - you are not permitted to link to porn in the sandbox. Simple. -- zzuuzz (talk) 12:38, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Purely disruptive material

RainbowSilverAlternate

Thank you for blocking my imposter named RainbowSilverAlternate. I didn't edit any of these articles. I knew someone is impersonating me, please change the reason of my imposter's block. RainbowSilver2ndBackup (talk) 23:38, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I've added the word impersonation, which should make things clear, and the same for RainbowGold (talk · contribs · block log). Stick to one account and there won't be any confusion, OK? -- zzuuzz (talk) 23:44, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, a long term abuse case there. I'll throw some semi-protection if it continues. -- zzuuzz (talk) 20:56, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Per the filter log, think you might as well remove talk access here as well. Home Lander (talk) 20:47, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly. Hopefully they'll feel better now that they've managed to say "vfvsdvfdvsdfvfvsdfv". -- zzuuzz (talk) 20:50, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, hopefully they don't feel the need to go here again. Home Lander (talk) 20:52, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Possible Sock Puppetry

Hi there,

I am suspecting that the two IP addresses, 175.158.216.198 and 175.158.218.17 have both been used by a blocked user named Killer Wiki Busters who keep on replacing content on pages beginning with 'USS' with the same word. This leads me to concern that the person who did this have evaded your and Materialscientist's blocks.

Here's some proof: here, here and here. 86.155.225.3 (talk) 10:01, 26 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, yes it's the same person (this person). If you see any more feel free to report straight to WP:AIV. I'll be putting some other measures in place to help prevent the trolling. Thanks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 10:04, 26 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
This is to let you know that I have noticed three more possible sock puppetry accounts, Careless king, Careless flashdrive and Golden Spearton, all of which are blocked but the reasons for them are not for sock puppetry for the person you've listed in August 2017 in reply to 86.155.225.3. I'd say it is a good idea for all those pages beginning with 'USS', at least, to have them semi-protected so that this sockpuppeteer will be unable to edit them. And where is the page to request them?

86.183.222.236 (talk) 08:38, 7 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I now know where that page is. 86.183.222.236 (talk) 09:01, 7 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've caught some more of (this person's) editing habits of whom Widr has blocked one hour ago. They should definitely be on the list of suspected MRY socks and a range block would help like what happened previously. Iggy (talk) 15:21, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Stupid question

Hey, Zzuuzz,

I hope you're doing well. I was curious about a particular feature of block logs: the <!--...--> notation. What does this mean?

Thanks,

GABgab 21:29, 19 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. This is an HTML comment. You may have seen similar containing hidden notes in articles and templates. It means, I think, that the text is not shown to the user when they try to edit, but is still visible in the log. So it's just a useful way of making notes which some may find helpful. -- zzuuzz (talk) 21:34, 19 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, OK, thanks. I had seen it in the mainspace, but wasn't sure why it would be used in logs. Best, GABgab 21:35, 19 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding MRY, would you say it's worth it deleting the 50+ mass "lorem ipsum" user talk pages created by IPs belonging to range 110.54.128.0/17 today? –72 (talk) 22:34, 19 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ugh. It doesn't seem overly urgent. -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:52, 19 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Look at the contributions of Warnerflag, the evidence of possible misuse is purely circumstantial. That being said, there are a number of edits in quick succession with a similar subject matter followed by the fact that it only became active once a Sockpuppet Investigation was filed against Deccabra. Brough87 (talk) 00:17, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, incredibly suspicious. -- zzuuzz (talk) 06:46, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Brough87: I've now blocked this account, and you may have noticed I also blocked User:ChloeLYChair earlier today. Please feel free to check and revert any sock edits you find, some of which are certainly malicious. I will be very interested to hear if there's any more disruption or suspicious accounts surrounding these articles. (@Smirkybec:). -- zzuuzz (talk) 21:03, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Zzuuzz:, would you be able to have a check of Saor alba1797. Literally creates an account today and pops out of nowhere to make a POV edit. Brough87 (talk) 15:14, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I will take a look. While it's generally accepted that sockpuppets and banned users should be reverted, I hold a personal policy that where there's complaints there's often an underlying cause which needs to be looked at in order to reduce disruption. Do we really think that something Gordon Wilson once said should be used to "brand" a bunch of people as facists? This seems a poor foundation. -- zzuuzz (talk) 15:41, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's a long-standing consensus that Siol is a proto-Fascist organisation in Scotland. Prominent members and activists have been defined as "racist" and "ethno-nationalists" and have been recorded making bigoted remarks in WP:IRS and WP:BESTSOURCES, from the Telegraph to the New Statesman. They themselves define as "ultra-nationalists" and have spent a great deal of time in the past being over-concerned (in my view) of "Race, Ethnicity and Nationality". I would not go as far as to call them Neo-Nazis, but they are certainly proto-Fascist in their viewpoint; if you objectively accept the fundamentals of the Fascist ideology and you're accused of being Fascist from across the political spectrum, I don't think it's a leap in thought or the breaking of WP rules to label them Fascist. After all, the consensus of them being proto-Fascist was established previously without issue, and has only been changed from that by people who have been suspended and blocked from Wikipedia because they break the rules on WP:NPOV. Brough87 (talk) 15:54, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You could call them evil bigots, but unless there's reliable sourcing it doesn't hold water. I've no doubt about the ultra-nationalist label, which was used by the BBC, but that same article only refers to the Wilson quote (rather derogatorily, and himself not exactly impartial) and the other reference doesn't appear to contain the word fascist at all (please tell me if I've missed it). I also don't see a consensus either in the history or on the talk page - if fact one old complaint about the Wilson quote. -- zzuuzz (talk) 16:06, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can you redact it?

Scary stuff, Zzuuzz. It should be totally redacted, if you will, please? Atsme📞📧 00:42, 23 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Zzuuzz, you blocked some person using that account and a few others. Also relevant (and blocked, though not from CU perspective I believe) are User:Occurstaci, User:Ponespent, User:Agarsics, User:Dartbids, User:Dartslines, User:Mikeherb; same vandalism, same background, same everything. Simplexity22 might have an interest in this as well--don't know if there is an SPI. I haven't tagged them. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 01:45, 25 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Drmies. You know I made a point of adding some tags a few days ago[2], and typically even note it in the block log. But sometimes life's too short. There are very few users I have been blocking for over a decade; this is one of them: User:Random-5000. -- zzuuzz (talk) 07:15, 25 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I wasn't making a point about your tagging--I didn't know if you knew about or had an interest in these socks. What a fine specimen of humanity, BTW. Drmies (talk) 17:41, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'd extend that range block to be a bit longer if I were you (36-72 hours). The vandalism and disruption spans back at least 24 hours, and there aren't any edits in that range since November 20th that aren't disruptive. I think the probability of collateral damage is low and the increased duration would further prevent disruption during that period of time. It's up to you though; figured I'd just message you and leave my two cents ;-). Thanks for jumping on that range block so quickly. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:51, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sockfarm/template vandalism

Hi Zzuuzz - just came upon the discussion about a sockfarm at WP:VPT and I see it is related to the rat vandal from the featured article last week. I had File:Dead rat blood.JPG blacklisted after that, and I see that you've now taken care of File:Paul Stanley looking sober.jpg, but I think you may want to add File:Middle finger gesture.jpg as well, it was used here. It's otherwise unused and explicit. Also note the common pattern of usernames at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Lovegun50 - many of them are Kiss-related usernames, see Kiss (band)#Make-up designs (Catman, Starchild, etc). Might be worth watching out for similar ones. Also, I see the IP listed among the socks geolocates to India, the behavior is obviously very different, but any chance this is related to Nsmutte? I know he is apparently from India and has a tendency to break markup in articles, which both this IP and several accounts have done. Home Lander (talk) 16:46, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info, I will take a close look at those others, I'm a bit busy over the next few days, but that will also be a chance to prioritise it. My immediate impression looking at CU stuff is that the Indian IP is unrelated, and that this is probably Incorrigible Troll. Saying that, there's probably a few candidate masters from that evil ISP. (@NinjaRobotPirate:). -- zzuuzz (talk) 17:22, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm trying to see if there's any pages where these files are still appearing. I purged File:Paul Stanley looking sober.jpg but it still showed links from a lot of pages, and I can't find it on many of them. I'm not aware of a quick and dirty way to locate leftover transclusions either. File:Middle finger gesture.jpg isn't showing anything, thankfully. Home Lander (talk) 18:34, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I can tell all links have been purged at this time. But it's possible there may be further reports due to a caching proxy or two. -- zzuuzz (talk) 18:53, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, lookie here - Zine#1990s and riot grrrl/girl zines. I'll purge it in a minute, but I figure I'll leave it for a moment for you to see. Guessing there might be more like this. Apparently the bad image list doesn't filter leftover transclusions? Home Lander (talk) 19:00, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not seeing it. In fact I do see it only when logged out. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:03, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It was showing for me logged in, but I've now purged the page so it should be gone for good. Will do the same for any others I find, it appears to be any of these that can be affected. Home Lander (talk) 19:09, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Someone is sure to point out any remaining images at ANI; they always do. But, yeah, I don't see any way this could be Nsmutte. Incorrigible Troll looks possible, but sometimes it seems like every vandal eventually shows up on this net block. 19:19, 30 November 2017 (UTC)
I caught a few more instances which I've now purged, but yeah unless you want to visit all those links logged out we might just have to wait for the rest to flush out. Start from the end is my advice. I seem to remember finding talk of a script which might be able to do this, but I've lost track of it. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:28, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Zzuuzz, I forgot all about it since I first mentioned it above, but File:Middle finger gesture.jpg is still not on the blacklist. I see a complaint at ANI about a porn image appearing on Portland, Oregon from another vandalized template - per an update to the list I'm guessing it was File:Buttplug_1.jpg - so this one should probably go as well. New sockfarm

Hello,

A sockfarm, apparently under Bitfirms (talk · contribs), has been disrupting Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology - I have blocked the whole group. I was wondering if there might be some connection with Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Basnayaka.

Thanks,

I concur with my esteemed colleague. Of course it can't be ruled out, but it's not a very likely thing. And while these accounts are confirmed, there's no obvious signs of a wider farm. -- zzuuzz (talk) 07:12, 1 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Zzuuzz. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. About that LTA rampage this morning

Hi, Zzuuzz! Thanks for being on top of that drawerful of socks attacking people on their talk pages. IMO this rampage - dozens of personal-attack usernames making vicious and threatening posts - needs to be shut down ASAP. Would this be possible: can you use your magic glasses to identify the IP or IPs behind all these troll usernames, and get some rangeblocks in place? As you know, sample usernames can be found at my talk page as well as Seraphim System's and Volunteer Marek's. Thanks! --MelanieN (talk) 16:39, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately User:JarlaxleArtemis is known to hop around open proxies with each account (or IP address). Protection, filters, or RBI, it is. -- zzuuzz (talk) 16:41, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
WMF Legal has made attempts to deal with this over the years with little to show for it. We know who it is. Over here we just RB(RevDel)I. JarlaxleArtemis is the original reason we got revdel. Acroterion (talk) 16:45, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Just to poke my nose in but particularly this afternoon the usernames (that I can remember) were often focussed on (anti-)semitism; now, that strikes me as the sort of word which never need go into a username (whether with "good" or "bad" intentions)- it's almost certainly going to be disruptive, or have disruptive consequences. So it can be arranged for a bot or filter pick up on it immediately? >SerialNumber54129...speculates 17:02, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Suspicious Behavior

Hey Zzuuzz, I've recently seen Wikipedia's live activity, and I've seen that you were blocking dozens of people the second, which has led me to think that your account may have been compromised/taken over. Just wanted to let you know because of the plenty of hackings of accounts we see these days. Thanks, Merry Christmas.DoctorSpeed (talk) 18:58, 13 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Watchlist pages

Hi, I have made a list of all the pages that My Royal Young has vandalised over the past seven months:-

Articles vandalised by MRY discovered by Iggy the Swan.

You are more than welcome to add these pages to your watchlist if they are not on there already. I would find this would also be a way to detect the long term vandal whenever it will vandalise which could be at any time except during the blocking periods. I have also used this link to see the affected page changes only. Here's the box to copy and paste into the raw watchlist if you wish to add them to your watchlist.

Article potentially being used to build up editor farm

Hi Zzuuzz, I have a suspicion that a certain article is being used by a content farm to build up new users so that they get editing credibility and the right to create articles. Obviously this does not fit immediately into categories to raise a sockpuppetry investigation as there is no tangible evidence of coordinated editing between the users. The article in question is for Merz Akademie. This is a tiny arts college in Germany, yet the article on EN wiki has gained almost as many edits in the last year as the (native language) German article has in the last 10+ years. What sticks out is that many new editors seem to have chosen this one for their very first or one of the very first edits, often just tiny formatting or wording changes. This strikes me as very odd. Would this be something of interest do see if there is any connection between the users? I had initially reached out to Bbb23 who suggested speaking with you, referring me to the user Download case recently. Though those editors may (or may not) be a different farm. pseudonym Jake Brockman talk 07:35, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Yes I agree, there's a really curious mixture of editors on that article. Personally my concern would not be about editors accruing rights, or even connections between some editors, but about whether there's some paid promotion going on with the article. I think the evidence for that is fairly slim - though I am confident that at least one paid spammer has edited the article, their motivations for doing so remains unclear, and it's not overly promotional as it is. Things like this can sometimes happen when staff or students at the school notice that they have an article. Looking at the history of this there's possibly some students from elsewhere involved. And there is also a relatively high proportion of vandals, which is as curious. We could also ask users like Bri and Smartse if by chance they know of anything relevant, but otherwise all in all I'm not sure there's much to do at this time other than keep an eye on it (and them). -- zzuuzz (talk) 08:14, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'll certainly keep an eye on the article and the curious editors. BTW, is there a more effective way of doing this? I have watchlisted the article, however for user actions I'd need to locally bookmark a shortcut to their Special:Contributions and actively click through them once in a while. Watchlisting user pages would really only flag when they are being talked to, but not their edits. pseudonym Jake Brockman talk 08:48, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Could you take a look?

Could you take a look at this? I noticed a pretty big increase in these over the last few days and I'm not sure how/if a CU look would help or if I need to go to Stewards? I realize they're probably just generic spam/bot accounts but perhaps a range block could be enacted? CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 16:54, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Already on it :) CU is helpful in finding them, but (for these ones anyway) it's a fairly busy and quite huge range. There seems to be about two or three spam accounts per day. I'm not sure the stewards would block the range, and I can't see any signs of cross-wiki spamming. -- zzuuzz (talk) 17:05, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have some ideas for an EF since this set seem to be spamming the same thing and I don't see any other legitimate usage of the word on Wikipedia elsewhere. (Specifically "zygenx" etc...) CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 17:10, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm what I said is probably an underestimate. They all seem to be diet/supplement-focused, but I'm not sure there's a common word. Anyway, for the record there's a nice selection in my recent blocking log. If you like I could probably pull out a list, but you might have seen most of them anyway.. -- zzuuzz (talk) 17:26, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Holidays
From Stave one of Dickens A Christmas Carol

Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail. Mind! I don’t mean to say that I know, of my own knowledge, what there is particularly dead about a door-nail. I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a coffin-nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country’s done for. You will therefore permit me to repeat, emphatically, that Marley was as dead as a door-nail.

Hi there,

I was wondering if you may consider doing a range block on 2A02:C7D:32B7:9E00:0:0:0:0/64 - believing that is the same person, as we both know that you have done range blocks with My Royal Young in the past. The main issue recently is that the person persistently evades blocks set by Mattythewhite, who is one of the administrators primarily focusing on Association football, but has no experience in performing range blocks. The long term issue with the IP range is that the dates keep getting changed to something like "Monday 8th January 2018"[1][2] for instance, when statistics have been updated. That would not be WP:MOSDATES as that is unacceptable per table next to MOS:BADDATE.

Also, since I know British Geography at a certain level, the IP range has also changed some counties from East Sussex & West Sussex to Sussex[3][4] - which I don't think should not be changed as the county split in 1974, so that could be interpreted as incorrect information. Sussex is considered as a historical county while East Sussex and West Sussex should be used instead.

This IP range started editing on 19 August until the present day which makes the same disruptive / incorrect edits for some time. See what you think about doing a range block for persistent block evading and disruption to many of the articles that Mattythewhite has been monitoring. Regarding the block of IP

Thanks for handling it. By the way, I think that article needs semi-protection. Also, I think those edits should be deleted since they're highly inflammatory and contain really unpleasant words. Étienne Dolet (talk) 09:39, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. You're welcome. Personally I think the threshold has not been reached for either action. However if you want to request semi-protection, feel free to ask another admin or at WP:RFPP. -- zzuuzz (talk) 09:44, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The article was semi-protected already but I don’t know what happened. Étienne Dolet (talk) 09:49, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It expired earlier.[6] We could always ping Ad Orientem. -- zzuuzz (talk) 09:52, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. As I recall the article was semi'd following a spate of disruptive editing around the time it got posted at ITN. There does seem to be a run of disruptive editing earlier this morning but it appears to have died down. If it returns I'd suggest contacting either zzuuzz or myself, or just posting a request at RFPP and reference this discussion. -Ad Orientem (talk) 14:48, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
