Ram Karmi, published works

Greetings, YN! My recent edit to Ram Karmi#Published works, which you subsequently tweaked, was primarily to indicate that the original work is in the Hebrew language. I haven't tackled the Manual of Style to learn proper Wikipedia format for foreign language titles cited in the English Wikipedia, have you? Incidentally, please note that in romanizing for the lay reader it's quite common to use ch for the Hebrew letter כ and kh for the Hebrew letter ח, hence adrichalut for אדריכלות. That 1948 document

Hi, the question has arisen of the correct name of the document that Ben-Gurion read out on May 14, 1948. Although it is very commonly referred to in English as the "Israeli Declaration of Independence", the most authoritative English sources I can find, such as the authorized translations of the 1948 Law and Administration Ordnance, several Basic Laws, and many High Court rulings, say "Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel". Hi, amudanan has an extra 1:50,000 map; select the second 1:50,000 in the maps menu. It is very nicely designed and easy to read. Can you see what map it is, and what year? Commons maps

I've noticed the maps you made at commons such as [1]and [2] are being used on en.wiki. These maps contain many oddities which make them inappropriate for en.wiki and I was hoping you could fix them instead of me having to manually remove the few dozens links to them. The three major problems are 1)East Jerusalem is placed on the wrong side of the Israeli boundary with Palestine 2)The Golan Heights are placed on the wrong side of the border with Syria 3) The West Bank is coloured differently than the rest of Palestine. I have to agree with Sepsis observations here. You state that "The maps' purpose is to illustrate Israeli localities' locations", but actually they are also being used to indicate the locations of places outside of Israel such as Ma'ale Adumim. That being the case it is not appropriate to use an erroneous international border for Israel with regards to East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. Dlv999 (talk) 10:39, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

It's not an international boundary on the map that's highlighted, it doesn't say that anywhere. Nor does Israel have an international boundary with the Palestinian Authority except for areas A, B and C (Oslo accords), but that's also an interim boundary. This is exactly the point—the map highlights the boundaries that are important for what it illustrates. The maps are therefore completely neutral and do not portray one political opinion on another, like the political opinions of the editors actually editing the articles. —Ynhockey ^(Talk) 22:46, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

In citation 6 above could you explain the meaning of the red line? In citation 7 above could you explain why East Jerusalem is coloured in white (the same coluour as Israel, different from that of the West Bank). You say the maps are nuetral but they give impression that the occupied Golan Heights and East Jerusalem are part of Israel in contradiction to most RS. In wikipedia terms that is not nuetral. In any case I think this should be opened up as a centralised discussion somewhere so we can get a wider range of views on the issue. Dlv999 (talk) 07:44, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

They're administrative maps and show areas under Israeli administration, divided by district. Actually the other lines which are non-administrative (like the Green Line) were added at the request of another user, who confirmed that the end result was satisfactory. In fact I went into extra effort to show that not everyone recognizes the administrative boundaries by using different colors for different areas, but that's essentially irrelevant for the map which is only meant to show Israeli localities, whether they are in the under Israeli law or under the military administration. —Ynhockey ^(Talk) 11:46, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

I think showing Israeli territory and non-Israeli territory would be more pertininant than trying to include Israeli territory and Israeli occupied territory as one category - land "under Israeli administration". It is certainly not one category and should not be represented as such. Also why is the international border between Lebanon/Syria/Jorden the same colour (red) as the boundary that surrounds the Israeli occupied (Syrian) Golan Heights? This gives the impression that it is an international boundary. By the way, places outside of Israel are not "Israeli localities" - it is non-Israeli territory under Israeli occupation. Anti-IDF politicisation of Canada Park

Hi, you edited Canada Park many years ago, and sadly a similar POV issue reared its ugly head again today (zero0000 ...I bet you never heard of that guy, and surely you've never known him to ever be involved in political POV disputes? ;-) ).

Luckily, Pluto has resolved most of the POV issues which are specific to the Modern Era (1948 & 1967) -- although you may want to add

and please do check Canada Park in a week or month to be sure zero0000/etc didn't taint Pluto's edit with a new round of one-sided argument/POV, but also, I wonder if you'd like to review the rationale for adding a brief Ancient History sub-section as follows...since Canada Park is mainly an Archaeology Park to preserve the (ancient and medieval/other) ruins more than an attempt to really preserve the Palestinian ruins. Thus it only seems natural that an article about an Archaeology Park should bear at least a brief mention the periods of the historic era during which the ruins of forts, therein, were built: it's also relevant to 1947-8 & 1967 because the fort & castle were placed there to defend strategic high ground for the same reasons that Ayalon-Canada Park became a target in 1948/67. Here are some sub-sections that I was starting when zero0000 deleted it; maybe it shows more of a "consensus" if you expand on this concept instead of me [and I'll write the same to user/Shrike who commented on the talk page], also I can't edit today due to the 1-revert rule, and it helps to have "eyes on" the article to be sure they don't again taint what Pluto added:

Basma and Ma'ale Iron

Frankly, I need some help, what (=which villages, places) actually went into Basma and Ma'ale Iron? Can we get a solid source on that? Not Dov Guttman; I have found so many mistakes in his web-site.

It is sort of difficult to write the history of the places without knowing their former names.

Also, what about was al-Murtafi'a, Aqqada and Kh. Um al Abhar: were they joined into Ma'ale Iron? They are not on the list of depopulated 1948-villages, and were in the middle of the group of villages Guttman say went into Ma'ale Iron. (And all 3 are noted on the 1880s SWP map).

List of villages depopulated during the Arab–Israeli conflict

I see that you used to be involved in this page, if you have the patience, could you swing by? I am suggesting in the pre-1948 list, we adopt an approach that rather than simply list the villages/neighborhoods with the assertion that they were depopulated and sourced to a single, independent webpage, each village be sourced. To establish that it did exist. Was depopulated. Whether it was depopulated because the land was sold or fro some other reason. And , if it is asserted that it was replaced by a specific kibbutz or Israeli town, that this be established. i am not asserting that such events did not take place. Update is needed for the Israeli Railway Map, because Netivot is now connected to the railway line to Sderot

The Israeli Railway Map needs to be updated, because Netivot is now connected to the railway line to Sderot with the opening of the Netivot train station on Sunday 15 February 2015 (almost exactly one year after the opening of the Sderot train station on 14 February, 2014). The railway line between Sderot and Netivot needs to be colored in blue.

PS: Could you create an additional railway map of Israel, again showing Israel with its post-1967 borders but without Sinai, in order to enlarge the map of Israel, because the fonts used for the place names are too small even with the largest zooming of the image.

Community settlement/Jewish locality

Hi Yan, hope things are well. Having been brought into a debate about community settlements, I discovered that the CBS seems to have reclassified quite a few (just over 30) as "Jewish localities" (יישוב יהודי). Do you have any idea whether these are still actually community settlements by another name, or whether they have lost that status? Unfortunately my Hebrew's not good enough to do proper research into this, and barely anything is written about it in English...

Error in image Bowtypes.svg

In one reference that you introduced, you included this bare link http://www.water.gov.il/Hebrew/Planning-and-Development/Desalination/DocLib/mitve-salt_water.jpg that shows a table and a diagram in Hebrew. Could you please include an English translation of the title of the table and a remark that the original table is in Hebrew in the reference? While I cannot tell you right now if there is a rule that requires this, in my experience this is standard practice when quoting articles in one language in a Wikipedia version of another language. Population figures

I've finally worked out a way to update the population figures annually without updating all 1,205 articles (the number of places the CBS do it for). I have created {{Israel populations}}, which contains all the populations (open an edit window, and you'll see - this is where we can update it annually). On each article, we then just need to add {{Israel populations|Placename}} (use the CBS name as listed in the template), and it will look up the single template. The year function can be done with {{Israel populations|Year}}, which looks up the same template. It can also be used in the text in the introduction. See my edits to Sde Boker.

I saw some changes in my Watchlist and was curious so I looked around after this template and found this discussion too. There seems to be newer data at http://www.cbs.gov.il/ishuvim/ishuv2014/bycode.xls. http://www.cbs.gov.il/hodaot2015n/yeshuvim2014.xls seems to be a shorter list. --IRISZOOM (talk) 18:13, 16 October 2015 (UTC)

I actually tried to look up population figures some days ago but needed to look around more. I was going to update the figures of Kafr Bara in Arab localities in Israel as I had updated the rest listed under the Central District section (which were easier to find as they had more than 5,000 residents). I am reading the table correct that it (Kafar Bara) had a population of 3,274 in 2014? --IRISZOOM (talk) 18:26, 16 October 2015 (UTC)

@Number 57: If you update the data to 2014, please move the old information to a 2013 template or something, so it can also be used where appropriate. I think it would be useful to create something like this for all years eventually. @IRISZOOM: I'm not really sure what you mean above by "Perhaps you should take those you have already have updated"? But anyway, I have updated the {{Israel populations}} with the 2014 populations. This will also make the articles it's already used on display as 2014. I have put the 2013 figures into {{Israel populations 2013}}. I didn't use a script - I just used the Excel files from the CBS, deleted all the columns except the English name and the population, added columns with | and = (so I had "| CITY NAME = XXXXX" in four columns), converted the name from all caps to Capitalised Case using this website, then copied the lot into notepad and changed the tabs (i.e. the separate columns in Excel) into spaces. There is one "have" more than it should be after some rewording. I mean if you start from Ahuzam or the one after with the 2014 figures and then go back edit those with the 2013 figures. @IRISZOOM: I still don't really understand what you mean. Now I have updated the template, all the articles from Ahuzam backwards now automatically have the 2014 population (you don't need to edit the articles at all after the template has been put in once). As you can see at Ahuzam, I edited it well before I put the 2014 populations into the template, but the article has the 2014 population in it now without me doing anything to it. WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages.
