Page Triage newsletter

Hey all. Some quick but important updates on what we've been up to and what's coming up next :).

The curation toolbar, our Wikimedia-supported twinkle replacement. We're going to be deploying it, along with a pile of bugfixes, to wikipedia on 9 August. After a few days to check it doesn't make anything explode or die, we'll be sticking up a big notice and sending out an additional newsletter inviting people to test it out and give us feedback :). This will be followed by two office hours sessions - one on Tuesday the 14th of August at 19:00 UTC for all us Europeans, and one on Wednesday the 15th at 23:00 UTC for the East Coasters out there :). As always, these will be held in #wikimedia-office; drop me a note if you want to know how to easily get on IRC, or if you aren't able to attend but would like the logs.

I hope to see a lot of you there; it's going to be a big day for everyone involved, I think :). I'll have more notes after the deployment! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 20:12, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

New Pages newsletter

Hey all :)

A couple of new things.

First, you'll note that all the project titles have now changed to the Page Curation prefix, rather than having the New Pages Feed prefix. This is because the overarching project name has changed to Page Curation; the feed is still known as New Pages Feed, and the Curation Toolbar is still the Curation Toolbar. Hopefully this will be the last namechange ;p.

On the subject of the Curation Toolbar (nice segue, Oliver!) - it's now deployed on Wikipedia. Just open up any article in the New Pages Feed and it should appear on the right.

It's still a beta version - bugs are expected - and we've got a lot more work to do. But if you see something going wrong, or a feature missing, drop me a note or post on the project talkpage and I'll be happy to help :). Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 00:11, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

PC RFC

Hey Yaris, note that we're asking people to put replies and discussion in the Discussion section ... that's to give everyone equal "air time" with their position before the discussion starts. You make a good point. In addition to the Discussion section, users' talk pages are also useful. - Dank (push to talk) 16:32, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Dank,
I agree that is the best way in almost all cases. I would argue that my comment is an exception because I was merely seeking assurance that the !vote was given as intended. Yaris678 (talk) 16:39, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
Won't other people who are less perceptive read it as permission to offer their own replies in the support section? Perhaps a note on his talk page would accomplish the same thing ... and if does turn out that he was in the wrong section and really doesn't get it, we have an excellent closer who will pick up on that. - Dank (push to talk) 16:56, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Page Curation update

Hey all :). We've just deployed another set of features for Page Curation. They include flyouts from the icons in Special:NewPagesFeed, showing who reviewed an article and when, a listing of this in the "info" flyout, and a general re-jigging of the info flyout - we've also fixed the weird bug with page_titles_having_underscores_instead_of_spaces in messages sent to talkpages, and introduced CSD logging! As always, these features will need some work - but any feedback would be most welcome. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 18:17, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Yaris! Just a heads up that I implemented some of the vandalism/sockpuppetry checks you (and others, subsequently) suggested in this thread. Please let me know if you see any other weird bot behavior! Jmorgan (WMF) (talk) 01:53, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Melvin Tumin

Hello! Your submission of Melvin Tumin at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! BlueMoonset (talk) 05:08, 22 September 2012 (UTC) Just realized that you'd never been notified that there were issues with your nomination. (The article isn't long enough.)

Page Curation newsletter

Hey Yaris678. This will be, if not our final newsletter, one of the final ones :). After months of churning away at this project, our final version (apart from a few tweaks and bugfixes) is now live. Changes between this and the last release include deletion tag logging, a centralised log, and fixes to things like edit summaries.

Hopefully you like what we've done with the place; suggestions for future work on it, complaints and bugs to the usual address :). We'll be holding a couple of office hours sessions, which I hope you'll all attend. Many thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 11:15, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Wikimedia UK AGM 12 May

Hope you are well. I am just sending you a quick message regarding our upcoming AGM - I am glad to see that you are able to attend. I am finalising the agenda for the day, and I can see that your DiffDeck talk has been scheduled for 10:30am. The total time available is 15 minutes, which probably leaves 10 for the presentation and a couple of minutes for any questions. Are you still happy to present? If so, please do let me know if there is anything you would need for the presentation - e.g. projector, laptop, flip chart.

I am sure you have seen the details of the event, but please feel free to visit the event's page for information. You can also contact me if you have any questions. If you haven't registered yet, you can do it here: http://donate.wikimedia.org.uk/index.php?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/event/register&reset=1&id=4&cid=0 You can reach me on daria.cybulska@wikimedia.org.uk

Notice of Dispute resolution discussion

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard regarding a content dispute in which you may have been involved. Content disputes can hold up article development, therefore we request your participation in the discussion to help find a resolution. The thread is "Melvin Tumin". Thank you! Page Curation newsletter - closing up!

Hey all :).

We're (very shortly) closing down this development cycle for Page Curation. It's genuinely been a pleasure to talk with you all and build software that is so close to my own heart, and also so effective. The current backlog is 9 days, and I've never seen it that low before.

However! Closing up shop does not mean not making any improvements. First-off, this is your last chance to give us a poke about unresolved bugs or report new ones on the talkpage. If something's going wrong, we want to know about it :). Second, we'll hopefully be taking another pass over the software next year. If you've got ideas for features Page Curation doesn't currently have, stick them here.

Again, it's been an honour. Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 12:21, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

An Issue you are involved in, regarding the MGM-52 Lance Article is taking place on that Article's Talk Page. Several Users have repeatedly removed the section "Operators" with the assertion that it contains copyrighted material. Several Users, including myself have just reverted the edits on that Page. I am opening a discussion on that Article's Talk Page in the hopes that a consensus can be reached and the constant reverting can be ended. I am notifying all of the editors involved in the hopes that the problem can be discussed there and a satisfactory conclusion can be reached. King of Nothing (talk) 03:51, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Followup RFC to WP:RFC/AAT now in community feedback phase

Hello. As a participant in Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Abortion article titles, you may wish to register an opinion on its followup RFC, Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Abortion advocacy movement coverage, which is now in its community feedback phase. Please note that WP:RFC/AAMC is not simply a repeat of WP:RFC/AAT, and is attempting to achieve better results by asking a more narrowly-focused, policy-based question of the community. Assumptions based on the previous RFC should be discarded before participation, particularly the assumption that Wikipedia has or inherently needs to have articles covering generalized perspective on each side of abortion advocacy, and that what we are trying to do is come up with labels for that. Thanks! —chaos5023 20:34, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Pending changes RfC reopened

Hi. You had previously commented on the pending changes RfC that was placed on hold. Your comments have been transplanted to Wikipedia:PC2012/RfC_3 and additional questions have been added. You may want to review your comments since some of the wording of the questions has changed slightly, and consider the new questions. Gigs (talk) 00:18, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

This is not a newsletter

This is just a tribute.

Anyway. You're getting this note because you've participated in discussion and/or asked for updates to either the Article Feedback Tool or Page Curation. This isn't about either of those things, I'm afraid ;p. We've recently started working on yet another project: Echo, a notifications system to augment the watchlist. There's not much information at the moment, because we're still working out the scope and the concepts, but if you're interested in further updates you can sign up here.

In addition, we'll be holding an office hours session at 21:00 UTC on Wednesday, 14 November in #wikimedia-office - hope to see you all there :). I appreciate it's an annoying time for non-Europeans: if you're interested in chatting about the project but can't make it, give me a shout and I can set up another session if there's enough interest in one particular timezone or a skype call if there isn't. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 11:31, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

Barnstar

The Barnstar of Liberty
As one of the core contributors to WP:RFC/AAMC, I hereby award you the Barnstar of Liberty. It was a long, grueling process, and we wouldn't have made it without editors like yourself sticking with it and contributing to collaborative development of a way out. Thanks! —chaos5023 (talk) 02:44, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Wazir Khan (Lahore), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Wazir (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 11:39, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

Dear DPL bot,
Thank you for taking the time and CPU-cycles to inform me that Wazir is a disambiguation page. As it happens, the link to that page was only added by me to Wazir Khan (Lahore) because I WP:SPLIT information for it from Wazir Khan, which I turned into a disambiguation page. That said Wazir may be the best thing to link to in that situation... or maybe Wikt:wazir... I'll let others think about that.
Although your algorithm was slightly confused on this occasion, I nonetheless enjoyed your message. I won't be opting out of future messages and may even have a dabble with dab solver.
Regards,

Re: Snuggle

Hi Gurch,

Did you ever create a scripting and querrying language for Huggle, called Snuggle?

The thing is, EpochFail is creating (very useful looking) program under the same name.

There is a move discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Editor Retention/Retain new editors/Snuggle

Yaris678 (talk) 12:26, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

It should probably go on record that I am against the mechanized harassment of users making constructive contributions, but yes you can delete that page. It is an abandoned project. Gurch (talk) 13:21, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Sydney Opera House

FYI. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:16, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

I really don't see the point. Hubble Constant hasn't returned and there has been no further discussion in over 3 weeks. What's disputed? It certainly wasn't the factual accuracy as the tag that Pigsonthewing has added claims, it was the addition and subsequent restoration of edits that broke the section that was the problem. --AussieLegend () 14:34, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

Snuggle discussion and suggestions

Yaris! Thanks for all your recommendations and ideas about Snuggle's functionality. I'm working frantically between the holiday activities to get a few of essentials in place for the demo on the 4th, so I haven't been too active in the discussion. I'm just here to let you know that I see and appreciate your discussion and I'll try to get back to you quickly. Back to the repo! --EpochFail(talk|work) 16:25, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

Hey, Thanks for getting back to me. No worries. I appreciate there is a lot to go through and you may have other things to do at the moment! Yaris678 (talk) 17:38, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
I just pushed some good changes out including quite a few of your suggestions. For example, you can now access a newbie's user and talk pages in one click and removed self-reverts from the visualization. You can see the changes for yourself [1]. Progress on WP:Snuggle and work log

I've been making some progress on Snuggle development recently and I could use your feedback. Specifically, I've created a work log that I plan to update every time I get a chance to work on Snuggle. My intention is that you'll be able to watch that page to track my progress so I can get your feedback on features when they are early in development. The most recent entry (also the only entry) discusses new functionality for interacting with newcomers via Snuggle. I posted some mockups in the work log that show how I imagine the new features to work and I could use some feedback before I start writing the code. Thanks! --EpochFail(talkwork) 20:30, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

Liverpool meetup -

Hi Yaris678, just getting in touch because I thought you may have attended the members meetup in Liverpool, and was wondering if you would have time/the inclination to put together a few words on how it went for the WMUK members newsletter? You can see last months newsletter here and its not a very long section - I just want to be able to give a flavour of what they're like/who was there/what you got out of it (other than a pint...? :)) to encourage more members to come to meetups when they get the chance.

Let me know if that's OK? Either ping me on my user page again or email me - katherine.bavage@wikimedia.org.uk. No worries if you can't/don't want to though - just let me know! Katherine Bavage (WMUK) (talk) 16:17, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for saying you could write something - yes, I really like the idea of your suggestion about different levels of experience, its exactly the sort of thing editors of all experience and none would want to know if they'd not been before. Will you have chance to email something to me in the next couple of days, or is that too soon? Katherine Bavage (WMUK) (talk) 16:43, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

Vital articles discussion

Hi there. You have participated in past discussion at Wikipedia talk:Vital articles, namely about possible additions and deletions to the vital 1000 articles. There is a new, similar discussion there now, myself and other users are giving input as to whether they support or oppose the idea of certain articles being added or deleted from the vital 1000 like before. Some of the proposals have been brought up before, and some are new. There are only a small number of users giving their views but we would like more, if you are still interested we would appreciate your input there, thank you. Please see WP:RMCI#Determining consensus, which explains the difference between RM and AfD closes: "Unlike articles for deletion, where lack of participation requires relisting, no minimum participation is required for requested moves because for most moves there is no need to make a request at all...lack of consensus among participants along with no clear indication from policy and conventions normally means that no change happens...." I have an RM in the backlog myself with no consensus, so I'm just waiting for an uninvolved admin to come along and close it; I'm certainly not taking the lack of consensus personally. As I mentioned on my talk page, you can take it to move review or request input from other editors for a new move request. Since the target title is redlinked, is there a reason for not just moving it yourself? All the best, Miniapolis 00:51, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi Miniapolis,
Thank you for your explanation of the requested move process. It looks like I shouldn't have requested a move at all!
I realised that I could just move the page, as you indicate. However, I thought I could avoid the potential for wikidrama if I started a discussion about it first. I now realise that I should probably have just started a discussion and not used the requested move template, which pulls the discussion into a process that is more suitable for moving one page over another.
Of course now I am a bit stuck as to what to do next. Maybe I will restart the discussion in a separate section without any template/listing. Any thoughts on this?
Yaris678 (talk) 13:39, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
That's a good idea, or you could ask BDD if at this point they'd object to a move. You're right—RM can be a can of worms, attracting editors who like to argue about what day of the week it is :-). The only times it's necessary are if the target title is a redirect (which needs to be deleted to make room) or if the move is controversial. Being WP:BOLD rarely hurts. Good luck and all the best, Miniapolis 17:08, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Huggle 3

Hey Yaris678! I am Petrb, one of core developers of Huggle, the antivandalism tool, which you are beta testing (according to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Huggle/Members#Beta_testers). I am happy to announce that Huggle 3 is ready for some testing. You can read more about it at WP:Huggle/Huggle3_Beta. Please keep in mind that this is a development version and it is not ready for regular use. That means you must:

  • Watch your contribs - when anything happens you didn't want, fix it and report a bug
  • Frequently checkout source code and build latest version, we change it a lot

If you find any problem with a feature that is supposed to work perfectly, please let us know. Some features are not ready yet, it is listed in known problems on Huggle3 beta page, you don't need to report these - we know it! So, that's it. Have fun testing and please let us know about any problems, either using bugzilla @ http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/ or #huggle connect. Please respond to my talk page, I am not going to watch your talk page. Thank you Petrb (talk) 10:57, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Huggle 3 beta is out - and we need more feedback!

Hey Yaris678, how are you? I am Petrb, one of huggle developers, and you are currently subscribed as a beta tester of huggle on meta (meta:Huggle/Members. You may not have noticed, but this week I released first beta precompiled installers for ubuntu and microsoft windows! Wikipedia:Huggle/Huggle3_Beta has all the links you need. So if you can, please download it, test it and report all bugs that is really what we need now. Don't forgot that as it's just a beta it's unstable and there are some known issues. Be carefull! Thank you for helping us with huggle Petrb (talk) 16:27, 29 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Mike. I have made some changes to your additions to the article Anti-Waste League. I have used the {{Quote}} template to format the big quote; make it easier to see that it is a quote. It is a good quote but I'm wondering if, in the long run, it would be better to summarise what it says, in our own words. Obviously we can still cite that book as a source. OAuth approvals process

Hi Yaris. My apologies for my delay in responding to you; as you messaged my volunteer account about a work-based matter, it kind of slipped through my fingertips. You're correct that Special:OAuthListConsumers doesn't actually allow you to register to use an application; the process approve an application to take action on your behalf occurs in your usage of the application. To try out OAuth, I suggest taking a look at OAuth Hello World made by Brad Jorsch. Let me know if you have any questions! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:27, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

Tau

There's a school of thought that suggests we picked the wrong ratio to be the fundamental constant and we ought to have used the ratio between the circumference and the radius of a circle, not its diameter. The equalling -1 is elegant because it links some of the fundamental constants in maths so simply. But if we had picked 6.283... as our fundamental constant, we would indeed have a simple relationship that yielded 1 instead of -1. Have a look at http://tauday.com/tau-manifesto if you get a chance. (And yes, I used to be a mathematician of sorts) Cheers --RexxS (talk) 00:31, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

My question at your RfA

Thanks for your quite perceptive answer. However I was aiming at when, if ever, an admin ought to speedy delete a page which does not match any of the criteria exactly, or perhaps not even very closely, but which the admin honestly believes no one could possibly defend as a valid article or page on Wikipedia. DES (talk) 14:53, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi DES,
In most cases like that I think it would make sense to PROD anyway. If the consensus there is that it is worth a speedy delete then we don't need to wait 7 days. If there is some problem with the article being in main space while it is being discussed then it can be userfied. If and only if I thought that some significant harm being done by an article, and that this harm would continue if the article was userfied, then I would consider speedying an article that did not look like it met any criteria.
There are several advantages to going to PROD in this way:
  • It reduces the chance of making a mistake.
  • Someone at PROD may point out a criterion that is does meet, which would be useful to learn from.
  • If no one can point out a criterion that it does meet, then we may be able to work out a new criterion which is worth adding to the list.

Closing ANRFC discussions

Hi Yaris678. I noticed that you wrote at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Yaris678:

Requested addition: I created most of the summary of the discussion that can be seen at Wikipedia:Pending changes/Request for Comment February 2011. I think this shows that I am good at following and summarising a large discussion, which is essential for determining consensus.

Would you consider assessing the consensus at discussions at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Requests for closure? Your analytical background and impressive work at Wikipedia:Pending changes/Request for Comment February 2011 would be very helpful in resolving disputes. Thank you for your consideration. Thank you Acalamari for the bit. Thank you Harry for the nomination. Thank you to everyone who took their time to assess the nomination and give their opinion on it. I was touched by the different aspects of my editing history that different users chose to highlight. I was particularly surprised by the editors who remember interacting with me a number of years ago. There were even a few pointers that I can learn from. I found the whole experience very positive.

Thank you.

We need your help testing latest huggle

Hello,

I am sending you this message because you listed yourself on meta:Huggle/Members as a beta tester. We desperately need attention of testers, because since we resolved all release blockers, we are ready to release first official version of huggle 3! Before that happens, it would be nice if you could test it so that we can make sure there are no issues with it. You can download it packaged for your operating system (see Wikipedia:Huggle/Huggle3_Beta) or you can of course build it yourself, see https://github.com/huggle/huggle3-qt-lx for that. Don't forget to use always latest version, there is no auto-update message for beta versions!

Should you find any issue, please report it to wikimedia bugzilla, that is a central place for huggle bugs, where we look at them. That is i mportant, if you find a bug and won't report it, we can't fix it. Thank you for your work on this, if you have any questions, please send me a message on my talk page, I won't be looking for responses here. Thanks, Petrb (talk) 15:19, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

regarding aggressive

I think they serve a purpose, searching those terms is how I googled this Wikipedia entry. I have no reference for aggressive, but have heard it several times. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.235.168.157 (talk) 11:34, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

New huggle 3.1 is going to be released soon

Hi Yaris678, we are to release a new major version of huggle, but we did receive almost no feedback from our beta testing team, which you are a part of (see https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Huggle/Members). It would be of a great help if you could download it (if you have windows, all you need to do is getting http://tools.wmflabs.org/huggle/files/huggle3.1.0beta.exe and putting it to a folder where you have installed huggle) and test it. You can always get a help with making it @ #huggle connect!

Major changes:

  • Multisite support - you can now log in to unlimited number of wikis in 1 huggle session and get a huge queue of all edits made to these wikis. This is good for smaller projects which gets overlooked often.
  • Ranged diffs - you can select multiple revisions and get a huge diff that display all changes done to them.
  • Fixes of most of bug reports we had so far

In case you found a bug, please report it to bugzilla: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/buglist.cgi?product=Huggle&list_id=147663 thank you! Petrb (talk) 10:17, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Hello Yaris678, nice to have met you in real life! If you would like to spread the word on your user page, you can add {{User Personal acquaintances}}. RFC Closure at Bharatiya Janata Party

Hi Yaris678,

Regarding this RFC closure by you, I wanted to clarify:

  1. This RFC was responded to last, 24 days ago. There were three in favor of keep, including one not-involved editor, saying the author is notable (he has a detailed Wikipedia page too) and the book is precisely on the article topic. And two in favor of removing citing fringe theory and reputation of author without providing any reference.
  2. You have said: Those arguing for inclusion appear to misunderstand Wikipedia's policies, guidelines and general practice. Excluding this book from further reading is not the same as excluding it from Wikipedia. But "Excluding... from Wikipedia", was never an argument for keep by anyone. and as a matter of fact this book is mentioned on three other WP articles.

Pinging @Cunard: as he requested assessing the closure by an experienced editor. Thank you. --AmritasyaPutra 07:05, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Several of those in favour of keeping the book in further reading alluded to or explicitly mentioned notability. That is why I felt the need to mention "exclude from Wikipedia" in the close. This was one example of the keep side not understanding how Wikipedia works. In contrast, those in favour of not having the book as further reading showed a good understanding. Yaris678 (talk) 07:23, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
I think that(exclude from Wikipedia) was not the argument by anyone. It was not my argument also. Yes, appropriateness of the book and notability of author was mentioned by the three keep`voters (including one non-involved editor). And fringe theory and poor reputation of author was mentioned (without reference) by two (involved) remove`voters. Also this book is already mentioned on three other WP articles, no one has commented on the lines of "exclude from Wikipedia".--AmritasyaPutra 07:46, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
You appear to want to rehash the argument you had on the article talk page with me, here. I suggest you instead reflect on what has been said and consider the possibility that the arguments in favour of keeping the book in the further reading section better reflect Wikipedia policies and guidelines. For example, how might WP:BURDEN and WP:ELPOV relate to this? If you see an aspect of this that doesn't make sense to you, I urge you not to seize on it as proof that you were right all along. Rather, think about what it might mean and how it all fits with the aims of Wikipedia. If it still doesn't make sense, I am happy to explain further. Yaris678 (talk) 10:47, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
I am sorry that is not the intention at all. I am truly at a loss and wish you help me understand. I do not (in all sincerity) understand how it fails WP:BURDEN or WP:ELPOV. It is not fringe (no I can't present any source saying "it is not fringe" -- this is never done in my view, those who claim fringe have to prove fringe, no one has to prove "not-fringe" -- I can produce source showing that the author is noteworthy and the book is specifically about the subject). --AmritasyaPutra 12:14, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
The point about WP:BURDEN is that is there is a reasonable disagreement about whether or not something should be included, then the burden is on the person who wants to include it to show that it is supported by reliable sources. No one has to prove that the theory is not fringe. There are some indications that the book is fringe so, unless someone can provide significant evidence that it is not, those who do not want to mention it in the further reading section are going to win the argument. Please don't feel down hearted about this. The book is mentioned in the article about Koenraad Elst. Yaris678 (talk) 14:15, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
You say There are some indications that the book is fringe -- but I see no such reference! Maybe I missed, could you point me to it? I may be stupid to have missed it the first time but this request is sincere. Cheers! --AmritasyaPutra 14:36, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
There are plenty of negative comments out there about author's views on India. That is sufficient. Yaris678 (talk) 14:57, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
Was I not clear? Point me to '1' reference? About: There are some indications that the book is fringe. Give it to me and I will shut up right away. --AmritasyaPutra 18:12, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
You were clear. The point is that finding such a reference is not necessary. Yaris678 (talk) 06:50, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
I see no consensus for delete when the majority of votes were for keep. The discussions on this were unfortunately spread over more than a handful of pages: have you read all of them before closing the RFC?
I have now asked for a second opinion on this from an admin who has not edited this topic area before (you just recently edited this topic area, i.e. the Indo-Aryan migration article). Regarding your comment that there are "plenty of negative comments out there", first, wikipedia is not censored, so even controversial books should be included, second, this book is not even one of his controversial ones, like his books on Negationism, Islam or Indo-Aryans. That the book is notable and cited by other academics, and his views on BJP are cited by the top senior BJP leader, has already been explained in the previous discussions (have you read them?). If this is how "wikipedia works", I could go to the Featured Article "Yasser Arafat" and remove half the books in the Further reading sections, because I believe that they are not up to the highest standards, as half of those books were written by mere journalists, who are less qualified than somebody like Elst.

Hi Calypsomusic. I had seen most of those conversations already and none of them change my view of the discussion.
I notice that the discussion is continuing with several other parties at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive264#Review of Admin RFC Closure (removal of book by Koenraad Elst in Further reading section of an article). I don't think I have anything else to add so I will leave it at that.

Lit parameter for languages

Hi, I've noticed a few-months-old discussion here, and it seems the parameter never really got rolled out for some languages (e.g., "lang-ru" doesn't use it). Is it possible to continue the roll out? cherkash (talk) 08:35, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for reminding me of this. I was rolling it out slowly and then got distracted by other things. I have now implemented the lit parameter for Russian. Are there any particular pages with Russian that you feel it would be useful for? Would you like to try it out on these, to check that it works? Yaris678 (talk) 10:10, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

Hi TheServe,
It can be very difficult to write encyclopedic content when you have a close connection to a subject. The main things are to not make it sound promotional (e.g. not like a press release) and to provide sources such as reviews of Landis's work.

Huggle message

Hey Yaris678! You are receiving this message because you are subscribed at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Huggle/Members#Beta_testers

I have recently launched a new downloads for beta testers that contains nightly builds of huggle, eg. versions that are built every day from our master branch and contains latest huggle. These builds are currently provided only for Windows and Ubuntu. You can find them here: http://huggle.wmflabs.org/builds/

Please keep in mind that these don't have any automatic updates and if you download and start using nightly build, you will need to update it yourself! So don't get yourself to running old version, it's possible to install both stable and nightly huggle, which is what I suggest.

Keep the bug reports coming to phabricator: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/create/?projects=Huggle Many thanks! Petrb (talk) 10:05, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

Wikipedia Science Conference

Hello Yaris You're receiving this update because you asked to be informed about the Wikipedia Science Conference taking place in London on 2nd and 3rd of September. Thanks for your interest.

The call for proposals is now public and session proposals are coming in. The two keynotes, and some other invited speakers, have graciously accepted. In mid-May we will bring together a programme, a publicity poster, and an online booking form. Then we'll begin the main publicity and will need your help getting the word out.

Please put in a session proposal if you've been thinking of doing so: the deadline is the 8th May. This is far from the only way to be involved. The conference will need session moderators, a programme review group, and other volunteers: if there is a specific role you are interested in, or if you have any other questions, please email me at m.l.poulter@bristol.ac.uk.

Personal note: I am going to hold you & Andy to your (very welcome!) pledges to organise the unconference block on the second day. When the programme is announced it will include the times of that block. We have the entire conference facility, which includes two breakout rooms and a large catering area as well as the auditorium.

Please pass on the word to any colleagues who might want to put in a proposal or help the conference in any way. Cheers, MartinPoulter (talk) 12:17, 14 March 2015 (UTC)
