Genre warring block

Hi, I oppose this block: I do not see any basis in policy to block for "genre warring" unless an actual edit war has occurred, which isn't the case here. TonyBallioni (talk) 19:55, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

The block reason was not genre warring but disruptive editing. They were replacing references with original research after warnings (and doing that using multiple IPs). Widr (talk) 20:29, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
Thank you! - FlightTime (open channel) 20:33, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
That’s not a valid reason to block: this is a content dispute, and taking administrative action encourages the false idea that registered editors don’t have to talk to IPs. Regardless, it sure isn’t vandalism and taking action at AIV only encourages bad reports. This is a very bad block. TonyBallioni (talk) 22:10, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
I don't agree with any of that. Intentional disruption is not a content dispute, and, as any regular AIV admin knows, such reports are routinely handled there. Widr (talk) 10:09, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
I disagree 100% and I do not consider it to be intentional disruption: I see a good faith editor trying to make changes that anyone but the WP:OWNers of the articles in question would have no problem with, and actions that on any other class of article would never lead to administrative action. The disruption from the block itself and the bad reports is far greater than the disruption the IP was causing because it undermines how Wikipedia is supposed to work. Please unblock this IP or at the very least let me unblock it. TonyBallioni (talk) 17:03, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
You can unblock at your own discretion. I don't support it, recommend it or agree with majority of what you are writing above, but do as you wish. Widr (talk) 19:54, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
I've gone ahead and unblocked. TonyBallioni (talk) 21:03, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

The same editing pattern

Hello W. It turns out that this IP 95.93.160.191 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) last April has returned to adding language categories to silent films. This is the same editing that lead to the previous blocks. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk 03:12, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

Morgan Spurlock articles

Thank you for the block [1]. Since the user has evaded previous blocks, perhaps all related articles need protection. Cheers, 2601:188:180:11F0:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 15:48, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

Thanks, I protected them all for a month. Widr (talk) 15:58, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
I checked into the IP information for each user who made the exact same vandalism to Morgan Spurlock and they all come from Charter Communications IP ranges registered to Greenwood Village, Colorado. It was going to continue to be a game of "whack-a-mole"; protection was definitely the needed solution here ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:09, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes. Even if a rangeblock were possible, the advent of a registered account seems to have iced the move for protection. So posits the anti-techie. 2601:188:180:11F0:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 16:12, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

Disruptive/profane edit summaries on an IP's talk page history

Hi, I know you already blocked this IP, would you mind deleting the edit summaries of these two revisions on their talk page (not the revisions themselves, just the edit summaries) under RD2/RD3? Thanks! ToThAc (talk) 16:39, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

Long-term block evasion from IP ranges in Indonesia mainly those of [36, 110, 125 and 180]

Hi Widr, can you make a block on IP range in this category just like how you make on this since there seems not even a single sign of stop from this Indonesian user who continue making the same disruptive editing again and again to neighbouring country articles. Give your feedback about changes to Special:Block

Hello,

You are receiving this message because you are a top user of Special:Block on this wiki. Thank you for the important work that you do. There is a discussion happening about plans to improve Special:Block with the ability to set new types of blocks. To get the best design and new functions added, it is essential that administrators who use the tool join the discussion and share their opinions about these changes.

Instead of a full site wide block, administrators would be able to set a Partial Block. A user could be blocked from a single page, multiple pages, one or more namespaces, from uploading files, etc. There are several different ways to add this feature to Special:Block. Right now Important decisions are being made about the design and function.

Please review the page on Meta and share your feedback on the discussion page. Or you can reach me by email Also, share this message with anyone else who might be interested in participating in the discussion.

I appreciate any time that you can give to assist with making improvements to this feature. Cheers, SPoore (WMF) (talk) , Trust and Safety Specialist, Community health initiative (talk) 01:47, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

Page move Made for Now

Hello, could you assist with a page move? Based on naming conventions I believe the article for the single Made for Now should be Made For Now with the F capitalized. The Bookkeeper (of the Occult) 17:51, 18 August 2018 (UTC)

For experimental purposes, let's say. It was actually 1 year, 2 months and 3 days, but just shows like that. Widr (talk) 17:53, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

Page protection for Hurricane Lane (2018)

Can you please semi-protect Hurricane Lane (2018) for about 1 week? The article is becoming much more frequently viewed, given the potential impacts in Hawaii, and it's currently a popular target for vandals and other new/unregistered users pushing a Cat 5 hype. Question

I noticed this block. I saw the report on AIV, and also saw the user only had one edit and ClueBot's warning - nothing after that. I thought we weren't supposed to block unless they continued vandalism, am I incorrect? I've been super hesitant to use the block button at all - most of what I've done since becoming an admin is edit protected pages and a few speedy deletions. Can you help me understand why that block was appropriate so I can be more useful in that area? Thanks. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 19:03, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

If you look at that one edit and the edits caught by the edit filter, you will not see anything but vandalism, thus it's a vandalism-only account. Warnings are not required before blocking accounts that obviously exist only to waste everyone's time. Whether to block or not is always up to the admin discretion, but using common sense is often a good thing too. Widr (talk) 20:25, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

IP editing after expired anonblock

Just wanted to ping you about 37.110.218.43, whom I see you blocked for a year in June 2017. Since the block expired, editing from the address has been prolific and the talkpage has already picked up a few warnings. It's clear that there are different editors, at least one of whom seems to be fairly competent and constructive ([2] vs. [3]), editing more or less simultaneously. I couldn't find a specific instance that prompted that previous block, nor do I see overwhelmingly negative editing from that IP now, but since you might know more about why it was blocked last year, and since there has been some general disruption in the two months since editing resumed, I wanted to bring it to your attention. Grandpallama (talk) 15:33, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

Possible new sockpuppet

I believe Eimukas22 has a new sockpuppet account – Radom1967. This user edits the same pages as the banned user, but the editing became more clever as edit summaries are used. – Sabbatino (talk) 06:21, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Warning template problem

I was affected by this problem. Were there any other consequences? Immediately after discovering this problem, I noticed that my regular connections on the Google opening page had all disappeared. Is it possible that there was some hacking? Thanks Denisarona (talk) 11:43, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

I have no idea. Widr (talk) 12:04, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

Hello. Thanks for blocking the IP. I thought I'd post some info here about the case, just so that you know what this is about if you see it again. Rydekodakone stands for Ryde Holding, Inc plus KodakOne, with Ryde Holding being the company that owns KodakOne, which in turn is the technological platform that KODAKCoin, a cryptocurrency created for payment of intellectual property rights, runs on. And the properly sourced (BBC) material they're repeatedly removing is a mention of BBC News Tech Tent having declared KODAKCoin and KodakOne (and the unrelated Kodak Cashminer) "the worst idea of 2018" at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 in Las Vegas. Making the repeated removal of content, with a false claim in the edit summaries, a very COI attempt to whitewash the article. Cheers, - Tom | Thomas.W talk 19:12, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for the background info. Widr (talk) 19:28, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

IP-hopping disruptive editor

Thank you for your recent blocks on IPs Special:Contributions/50.78.35.86 and Special:Contributions/76.30.25.202. These appear to be just a few of the IP addresses this editor has used since at least early August to make persistent, unconstructive and unsourced edits with false edit summaries that I've seen pop up on articles on my watchlist. If you look at the revision history for just Huey Lewis and the News, it's fairly easy to spot the same editing pattern from these additional IP addresses:

There are likely more, alas. Is this something that you can help with? If not, please let me know the right way to get this issue addressed, if possible. I'm relatively new to this sort of thing, so I'm not sure what is the right procedure to try to fix this problem. On multiple reverts of this pattern of editing, other editors have claimed this as block evasion. Thank you. NOLA1982 (talk) 21:40, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

The listed IPs haven't edited recently, so blocking them now would serve no purpose. When you spot new ones, It's best to report them to WP:AIV while they are active. Widr (talk) 21:53, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

Plea for Crierdaddy

I'm not sure what to do about Crierdaddy (talk · contribs). It appears that Crierdaddy was making good edits to Mesozoic (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs). They were unsourced or the sources not clear. Advice was given on Crierdaddy's talk page, but no replies. For IP vandals, is there something special about a block duration of 31 hours? Just curious. Hdjensofjfnen (If you want to trout me, go ahead!) 19:03, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

The logic may have something to do with school kids. If they get blocked for 24 hours, they are likely to return to vandalize the following day at the very same time. When it's an uneven amount of hours, it might not fit their schedule that easily. Widr (talk) 19:44, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
