@JaguarXJ8: I saw that. There is an "e" too much in the link. Sometimes the spelling program does these things when the English word can be spelled in different ways, and you have to fix it manually. Wait a minute!. You are not a host? But it doesn't matter, you deserve this award as much hosts do. Why don't you join Teahouse host team w.carter? Thank you ChamithN :) you are always so kind! Being a host at the Teahouse is more of a title than an organized program and I would love to be able to call myself a host some day. But I simply don't know enough about the Wikipedia yet to do that. I learn the WP pretty much by trial and error(s), I don't read up on policies and regulations unless I, or someone I help, need them. I only answer the questions I know the answer to, the simple basic ones. Sometimes I even get those wrong, resulting in a correction from one of the "real" hosts. I can think of a number of TH hosts who would disagree with you that I should call myself a host. Right now I'm more of a "doorman" or "janitor". :) w.carter-Talk 10:27, 11 January 2015 (UTC)
Wow you are really honest :) Anyways I don't think they would disagree with you being a host. Because there are some hosts who are not even experienced like you. They have created their hosts accounts once they reached 1000 edits. I think you have everything (personality, experience, knowledge etc.) editors expect from Teahouse hosts. Hi W.carter, around two weeks ago I told you on my talk page that I was going to do some new page patrolling, but since then you have left me with "That's all for tonight" and "the seniors will be keeping an eye on you", since then I have been extremely cautious with my CSD tagging. As such, very article I tagged with a CSD has been deleted. I would've asked earlier, but I though it may have been a bit ride to do so... Anyway, I would highly appreciate some feedback. Hello again NetworkOP. Nice to hear from you again and that things have been going well. Yes, the senior editors are always keeping an eye on the newbies, and if you have not heard anything, that means you are doing ok. This is a place where good job and correct editing usually just goes into the normal flow of things, seemingly unnoticed, but if you screw up something even ever so slightly, all hell can break loose. So quiet is good. :) And you are still of course always welcome to ask things, that is not rude at all! I just got the impression that you wanted to try out things on your own for a while and that I could not contribute much more to your knowledge for the time being. I apologize if I thought wrong. It is great that you have been cautious. I've seen too many trigger happy new editors getting into trouble because they have been too eager to get rid of anything remotely wrong. If you miss an article that should have been tagged, someone else is bound to notice it instead.
I have looked at your edit count, your contributions, talk page, and it all have the look of an editor who knows what he's doing. You are really learning to walk before you run. Well done! Anyway, my area of what little expertise I have here is creating, communicating and fixing things, rather than CSD and reviewing. So if you want a real thorough feedback on you tagging you should just ask some editor that you see around that part of the WP, preferably someone who is also helping out at the Teahouse, since they are the ones that are most used to dealing with new editors. @NetworkOP:Not exactly sure exactly how they count the number of characters for a DYK, I know that there have been some controversies about that from time to time (different counting-software and so). I would say that while the facts are solid, it does need a bit of the same TLC that I wrote about on your talk page re "Lewis...", to make it pleasant for the reader to read. It is very compact and could be divided in two or three section just to rest the eyes, and the refs need some fixing. I expect you want your article to look as nice as possible when it will be read by thousands of readers, as the DYKs often are. :) If you get stuck I can help you out a bit. w.carter-Talk 22:50, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
@NetworkOP: One more thought: You say "new news sources coming out too quickly". If it's an ongoing current proposal, maybe the {{current|current proposal|date=January 2015}} should be placed on top of it? I also suggested a move due to the "UK" in the title when all other articles in the same area have the full name "United Kingdom". Dear W. Carter, Thank you for the comments: I will change the article name to "SpaceOps". I am willing to change the user name - I have been told before - however your policy says it is "buerocratic" which I don't have time for (I just can work on free weekends). Could somebody of you help me with that? However, you did not tell me how to proceed with placing the image in the article - I think you (Wikipedia) has everyting needed - or is something missing?? Hello Spaceops Since you change the name of your own free will, it is not as "bureaucratic" as you may think. :) Go to the Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple and follow the instructions there. I wouldn't be surprised if you have your new name in a couple of hours. The change is done by editors assigned to this ("somebody like us") and many of them work right now, same as we do. We are all regular volunteers here, just like you. Some of "us" have just been here longer and knows things better. :) I will take a look at the picture-thing and see what I can do. @Spaceops: Well, yes, I did tell you how to place the picture in the article by providing you with links to two very good tutorials about just that, and if you had read them you would have been able to place the picture in the article yourself. I have now done that for you, and now that the picture is in the article you can see how I did it and perhaps read about it in the tutorials so you know how to do it the next time. :) It would also be great is you started to do some work on the references since they are presently just bare urls. Like I said at the Teahouse, you will find out how to do that in the tutorial Help:Referencing for beginners. @Spaceops: While fixing up the first references in the article I noticed that ref #2 is written by a Joachim Kehr, Editor SpaceOps News and since you have signed your previous post here on my talk page with "JoachimSpaceops", it is not such a longshot to assume that you are in fact that person. This is clearly a case of Conflict of interest, the thing I asked you about at the Teahouse. Since I'm not quite sure how to proceed with this (citing sources you have written yourself), I'm going to ask another more experienced editor, Philg88, about advice on this. Dear WCarter, Your assumption is true, however I don't see a conflict of interest. We are a non-profit international organization, the members being recruited from almost all official Space Agencies around the world on a volonteer basis. I got the job to put us on Wikipedia and I accepted it becuase nobody else could do it (timewise). I had all our space agencies referenced by Wikilink but was told (in the sandbox) to remove them, because you wanted independent links - that introduced the URL-business and was accepted! Now, I am a little puzzled what to do. Please help!

@Spaceops: Per the rules of Wikipedia it is always a conflict of interest when a member of an organization is writing an article about that organization, and such conflicts have to be declared. The article (and the urls) was accepted before anyone knew your position in the organization. The WP deal with thousands of orgs and companies who want to be on the WP for one reason or other (mostly promotional), and it has to have rules for this and these apply to all organizations however good or nice they are. And yes, the Wikipedia want independent links, but just how "independent" is a text if you have written it yourself? And don't dig yourself in any deeper by saying things like "I got the job to put us on Wikipedia" since that implies paid editing! We will sort this out in the best possible way, but I don't know all the policies and practices in cases such as this, and that's why I have asked for help. Dear WCarter, Thank you for the advise, but I think in our case your rules can not be followed to the dot. As I said - we are a NON-profit organization, composed entirely of volunteers. No payments for anybody!! I see no other way to get listed in Wikipedia. Now, if the hurdles are too high you might have to delete the (alreday accepted?) article. But I hope it will not come to that - I trust in you(WP). Thank you for your help!

Don't worry! No one's going to delete anything, but you have to change your username, most likely put a notice about your COI on your user page and maybe strike one or two refs in the article, that is the worst case scenario. The WP is very considerate just as long as everything is in the open, the whole organization relies on transparency. But even non-profit orgs have to follow the rules (and I was playing the devil's advocate when I cautioned you about paid editing since there are editors that might misunderstand that) and most editors are a sticklers for the "dots". I am helping you, same as I would any other new editor here, but I have to confess that I am a bit biased since I've been a space buff all my life. ;) w.carter-Talk 20:18, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

@Spaceops: There are two problems here. The first is that your user name is in breach of our user name policy. In a nutshell, we don't allow names that are promotional in nature and I'm afraid yours is. You can read more about it here and request a change of user name here. Secondly, you clearly have a conflict of interest in editing an article on a topic that you are closely involved with. You should read the appropriate guideline and only carry out non-controversial edits to any topic you are involved with. Neither of these issues is affected by the fact that your organisation is a voluntary one. Sorry if this sounds draconian but it's fairer for everyone. Dear WCarter & Philg88, Thank you for the info.

  • 1) I will request a simple user name change as advised after the end of this discussion for the sake of still being able to log in.
  • 2)On the conflict of interest I still have no idea how to solve the problem: The suggestsed WP article describes the organization of an international space operations community. Assuming this is of interest of WP readers we wanted to share this information on WP. I can not think of anybody who would be able to describe this organization better than anybody from "inside" the organization (i.e. not being independent according to WP's definitions). Even if such a independent person would exist he/she would have to talk and get information from "inside" personnel.

Now you seem to postulate that if there is not such an independent "editor" the information is not worthwhile to be shared because of an "conflict of interest". Is is a conflict of interest if you want to provide an as accurate as possible information of our organization? - on the other hand, I think it would be embarassing for WP to have something published from second-hand knowledge (hearsay?). I am at a loss and even would accept a "banning" as editor if this is a solution. We are not trying to "hide" anything - and if that helps and you approve, I will add an opening or closing paragraph stating that the article has been submitted by Dr. Joachim J. Kehr, Editor "Jouranl of Space Operations and Communicator" and founding member (in 1992)of the SpaceOps Organization,employed by Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR, German Space Agency), retired since 2005. (This all can be verified by using the already available references).

Hello again Spaceops. I hope that you forgive me for formatting your post, otherwise it will just be one big block of text. Thank you for changing your user name. That will make things much easier.
About the next comment: This is exactly the same arguments and speech we hear from every newcomer who have not understood how the WP works. Scholars have a particularly hard time understanding this since they are so used to be trusted as reliable sources and always call on their good name as verification, when we have absolutely no way of verifying who you really are. (I was also a skeptic in the beginning, but I have since realized that this is the only way this project can work.) The WP is working on a set of rules and guiderlines that I have no power to change just because you want me to. I am but one of about 50,000 volunteers working on this encyclopedia. Earlier I posted a "Welcome tablet" on your talk page. It would be much more efficient if you could just read about why the WP functions as it does at links such as the Introduction to Wikipedia and The five pillars of Wikipedia instead of having me writing the same thing all over again here. The WP is an encyclopedia and not a general forum for promoting all kinds of organizations or companies. All encyclopedias function along the same guidelines: If it is notable enough, it will be included. And someone will write about it, someday.
All articles rely on solid secondary sources since that is the only way that "anyone" can check that the information in the articles are correct. That is not "hearsay". Also people "inside" organizations tend to be biased, it is very hard to write about something you care about from a neutral point of view, hence the COI rule. Try to look at all of this from the WP point of view: Since the same rules apply to everyone and this is an international site, what do you think would happened if the WP allowed anyone who had "inside insight" to write freely about their company or organization? Do you really think the WP could maintain its high credibility if we had promotional articles about every little business, club, organization or lodge in the world?
Please read about the WP in the links, where editors with much more experience in these matters have written and explained about all of this. Or if you still want to keep up this debate, I suggest you do so in the Teahouse where you find lots of editors who love to discuss policies and such matters. My "area of expertise" so far, is to greet newcomers and point them in the right direction as well as write and fix articles. So, in a way you are really arguing WP policy with the janitor. :)
The paragraph about you should not be on the article, but on your user page. I suggest you ask at the Teahouse about how it should best be formulated. Best, w.carter-Talk 20:09, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

@Ceoil: Thank you, that was really kind of you to say. :) Bombarded? Yes. Do I mind it? No. I'm one of those "strange" editors who really enjoy cooperation. I love to see things I've started, or contributed to, grow and develop into something even better. Most good things don't get improved without some sweat and pain. I have not abandoned that article just yet, I've studied him for some 30 years, but only after the GA did I (finally) get hold of the rare book needed to provide the proper references for things like his musical interest, military service, theatre work, etc. I also know some more about editing and the WP than when I wrote that article, and that will come in handy. @Ceoil: Not pesky at all, you seem to know what you're doing. Ahh, nice book. I did say "some day"... It only looks like a lot of work on this article. I knew most of it by heart, the trick was just to find the refs to prove it. That is why it became one of the first articles I wrote here. "Knowing" something and getting it into the WP are two very different things, hence some facts are delayed getting written in the article. Inquiry about how to handle possible db-attack/vandalism

I am writing to inquire if you may help with a concern dealing with possible db-attack/vandalism on the ARI LEHMAN article, by a particular user who has ignored comments on the Talk page and appears to have a bias against the article's subject, with the intent to create a negative conjectural interpretation and the user references non-reliable secondary sources. I would appreciate your insight, as I see the interaction as too much back and forth. Is there a more direct method for a neutral person such as you to review the article? I like it Tjenare, läget! I am in search of a less known but most important personality, or a historical fact that I would like to work upon in next month or so. I am becoming interested in the history of human civilization starting from 3000 bc or so. I am also reading about British India and specially the cast system in India. So many surprising facts are being revealed from books that are close to 200 yrs old or even more! I have some of them! Somehow, ancient Iran and a less known caste of India "Sunar" means Su= good and Nar=Man is coming up as most interesting one that seems to be the decedents of that time "Sumers". They used to do the Gold work in that time, and even today they do the work of gold. There are less than 0.1 million original "sunar's left now in all over the world. I must dig this all..... Hello Lbhiggin! You almost got it right. You just did a common mistake that is always hard to avoid when trying to learn how a ping is made. The "nowiki"-part on either side of the "ping code" was just there so that you could see the code text in the normal text right away. It should not be included in the ping itself (as you can see here in the code where I have pinged you). On top of that another editor came by, and in trying to "help" you he only messed up the thing even more. But after this little episode, I think you'll get it right. @Jim Carter: (aka The Adventurer) I know about the phone problem. Mine doesn't render it right either. And if my connection on the computer is slow for some reason, it displays it all before "contracting again" when the upload is complete. It seems like the Wiki-thingamagadget "hide/show" only works with some browsers. Pity, but I haven't found another option that does the same trick and renders perfect on all platforms. The various forms of {{collapse top}} / {{collapse bottom}} and similar things on templates in articles does not work either on phones. Try looking at the article Gothenburg. It has loads of templates in "hidden mode" at the bottom. Most phones can't handle that either. w.carter-Talk 19:54, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

Hello, I have 2 queries. 1st on the teahouse page; your name was appearing w.carter ("w" was in lower case). So how can i get my "A" in lower case for my username? 2nd the process of uspuration is successfully completed. @Acagastya: As far as I know the "real" username = your official name, must always start with a capital letter (as you can see at the top of this page where my name is spelled W.carter), but if you customize your signature you can make it any way (almost) you want it. For customizing your signature you will find information at Wikipedia:Signatures#Customizing your signature, there is also this page: Wikipedia:Smurrayinchester's signature tutorial on how it's done and where you can find examples of signatures. When you have entered the new signature at "Preferences → User profile", the four tildes ( ~~~~ ) will automatically create the signature when you type them and click on save. But I see that you still have some problems with creating those tildes, since your signatures are always autosigned by a bot. Not good. Are you perhaps editing from a phone?
Your other account cannot be deleted, no account can. I saw that an admin had moved everything for you. So from now on you just ignore the previous account. Best, w.carter-Talk 14:35, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

@Acagastya: Hmm, weird... But it seems to have worked this time. With most keyboards there is no way of getting the tildes to appear one at the time just by tapping the key once, you always have to double-click it and then you get two tildes at once. So try to rapidly tap four times (and you may have to press down the "Alt Gr" at the same time). As an alternative you can also click on the little "pen-icon" at the top of the editing window. W. Carter, thanks for the step by step guide to listing references. After reviewing my list of references, I observe some puzzling inconsistencies: for example, in the first two entries the titles of the papers are in italics and the publishers are in regular type. In the third and fourth, the titles are in regular type (and in quotes!) and the publishers are in italics. Hello Ahlitanah! What article are you talking about? The Antler orogeny or the Eureka Quartzite in your sandbox? I must know that if I'm to help you. If it is the one in your sandbox, there are some peculiar things going on there with the numbers. I think you have misunderstood that part. And what is that redirect doing at the top of the page?? As for the things italics/non-italics, quotation marks etc. Don't worry, you have filled in the {{cite ...}} things just right. The markup in those are quite different from the rest of the Wiki Markup. Those "styles" are auto formatted by the template you use and they cannot/should not be altered. @Acagastya: Hello! The signing worked fine this time. As for the .css page, I'm afraid I can't help you. I only saw that you had created it when I was looking for the potential trouble with your signing and I patrolled it (not reviewed it) which is I just gave it an ok-check. Those are special pages that no-one but you can edit. I see that you have tried to fix a code for your signature there. Unfortunately I've never tried it that way. The way to customize it by placing a code in your Preferences→User profile→Signature, is much easier. That is the way described in the second tutorial Wikipedia:Smurrayinchester's signature tutorial. Remove the code from your .css and start over with that instead and I think you'll get it right. On that page you also have a lot of examples to start tweaking with, experiment in your sandbox. If you get stuck, tell me how you want your signature, and I'll help you.
Anyway, you had missed a "|" in the code, that's one reason why it did not render right. I have fixed that in the code on a copy here (I think this is how you want it ??)

Just a suggestion, I'm not so sure that it is such a good idea to use leet in your signing. Most editors here have no clue about it (as I have discovered) and will just assume that there is something "wrong" with your signing. Again. ;b Also, if you choose such unusual fonts as you have, the signature will just appear in a default font on most computers (like mine). Use a more common font that is included in most programs like Arial, Calibri, Times, etc. The person reading your post must have the font installed on their computer to see it right. @Acagastya: That looks much better, only you made it BIG which is a no-no since it will disrupt other texts when used. Just remove the "font-size:120%" and "font-size:150%" and let it be just regular. Generally, editors like to be "shouted at". Otherwise it's just fine. In the mean time, I received google alert about Sunil Kumar Verma. This is breaking! Just read a news from Indian, Chines, Iraqi, and other news sources. I think the DNA barcoding article on wiki could be updated with news about this latest controversy / alternatively we can wait and watch..... Lets take advise from @Philg88:. @Educationtemple: Read WP:ITN to know what are the criteria. Basically the article can be featured "In the news" section but the news need to be really big. That means, news papers of at least 4 country should feature the news. For example: Times of India, Telegraph, UK, New York times, BBC etc. ITN is similar to DYK but here the requirements are different. Almost difficult to sort out, but you can do some preliminary work and see which papers have the original story and which have only copied from others. I know I am not supposed to do original research and analysis here, but for my own sake, I am trying to understand the matter. Hebert published his work in 2003 (as also cited in this article on WP) but team Verma in 2001 as even I have cited from one of the source reference for Universal primer technology in Sunil Kumar Verma. Hebert use "Cytochrome c" and Verma proposed "Cytochrome b" for the purpose of animal species identification. Step wise flow of the technology is also same. According to breaking news article above Hebert said that he was not aware of Verma's work, which is childish statement for any scientist. There seems to be some grace in the matter and Canada has to address the issue or give equal credit to team Verma in the title of "Father of DNA Barcoding" as Hebert is known with in entire world! There is nothing wrong with structuring your thoughts. It can give you a better view when you write the sections later. It really helps to understand what you are writing about.
