Recent changes

  • Web browsers can use tools called extensions. There is now a Chrome extension called Citation Needed which you can use to see if an online statement is supported by a Wikipedia article. This is a small experiment to see if Wikipedia can be used this way. Because it is a small experiment, it can only be used in Chrome in English.
  • A new Edit Recovery feature has been added to all wikis, available as a user preference. Once you enable it, your in-progress edits will be stored in your web browser, and if you accidentally close an editing window or your browser or computer crashes, you will be prompted to recover the unpublished text. Please leave any feedback on the project talk page. This was the #8 wish in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey.
  • Initial results of Edit check experiments have been published. Edit Check is now deployed as a default feature at the wikis that tested it. Let us know if you want your wiki to be part of the next deployment of Edit check. [1][2]
  • Readers using the Minerva skin on mobile will notice there has been an improvement in the line height across all typography settings. [3]

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 April. It will be on all wikis from 11 April (calendar). [4][5]
  • New accounts and logged-out users will get the visual editor as their default editor on mobile. This deployment is made at all wikis except for the English Wikipedia. [6]

I understand its risky but my primary interest in this website is to contribute toward improving it, intelligently, considerately, and in good faith, I'm not going to be constrained in my approach just because of some motivation to remove sanctions; even if they were imposed for justified reasons at the time.

We are approaching the end of the 2024 WikiCup's second round, with a little over two weeks remaining. Currently, contestants must score at least 105 points to progress to the third round.

Our current top scorers are as follows:

Competitors may submit work for the second round until the end of 28 April, and the third round starts 1 May. Remember that only competitors with the top 32 scores will make it through to the third round. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs. As a reminder, competitors are strictly prohibited from gaming Wikipedia policies or processes to receive more points.

Closing the T-ban thread at ANI

Hi, Valereee. Thanks for closing the lingering Nycarchitecture212 thread at ANI. I felt a pinprick of worry, though, when I saw Nycarchitecture's quite cheerful reply to your notification. Do you think it's possible that they misread your information about the ban being appealable after six months, as implying that the ban would expire after six months? Of course that is by no means what you said. But, as you remarked, they're quite new. And you didn't actually mention the word "indefinite" anywhere. Do you think we can be sure they got it? Problems

  • Between 2 April and 8 April, on wikis using Flagged Revisions, the "Reverted" tag was not applied to undone edits. In addition, page moves, protections and imports were not autoreviewed. This problem is now fixed. [7][8]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 April. It will be on all wikis from 18 April (calendar). [9][10]
  • Default category sort keys will now affect categories added by templates placed in footnotes. Previously footnotes used the page title as the default sort key even if a different default sort key was specified (category-specific sort keys already worked). [11]
  • A new variable page_last_edit_age will be added to abuse filters. It tells how many seconds ago the last edit to a page was made. [12]

Future changes

  • Volunteer developers are kindly asked to update the code of their tools and features to handle temporary accounts. Learn more.
  • Four database fields will be removed from database replicas (including Quarry). This affects only the abuse_filter and abuse_filter_history tables. Some queries might need to be updated. [13]

  • This is the last warning that by the end of May 2024 the Vector 2022 skin will no longer share site and user scripts/styles with old Vector. For user-scripts that you want to keep using on Vector 2022, copy the contents of Special:MyPage/vector.js to Special:MyPage/vector-2022.js. There are more technical details available. Interface administrators who foresee this leading to lots of technical support questions may wish to send a mass message to your community, as was done on French Wikipedia. [17]

lol...well, she certainly seems to be experienced, and she understands the whole "we're all volunteers, make this easy for us" thing. There's been a similar paid editor at Bob McDonald (businessman) for years. We had to limit their requests, as the urge to polish became absurd. I finally just removed the section on board work as every time he went on or off a board, there was an edit request to update that section. Valereee (talk) 10:06, 26 April 2024 (UTC)

@AlexAndrews, Wikipedia has a very specific definition of vandalism which is editing (or other behavior) deliberately intended to obstruct or defeat the project's purpose, which is to create a free encyclopedia, in a variety of languages, presenting the sum of all human knowledge. You can find more information at WP:vandalism.
You have edit-warred to insist upon the addition of content for which you have not been able to get consensus, and you have been casting aspersions on highly-experienced and long-trusted editors who have been pretty darn patient with you while you've done that. Despite the fact several of them have tried to explain the applicable policies to you multiple times, you are apparently unable to or unwilling to understand those policies. The purpose of an encyclopedia is to provide facts that are informative and educational. The content I have added is not only factual but informative and educational. That informative and educational material has then been deliberately removed (repeatedly), thereby obstructing the project's purpose. Ergo, according to the definition you have quoted that is vandalism. You and the other editors on the article have vandalised it by removing the informative and educational factual material I have added.

My guess is that there is a chronic case of Groupthink where the article is concerned:

Groupthink is a psychological phenomenon that occurs within a group of people in which the desire for harmony or conformity in the group results in an irrational or dysfunctional decision-making outcome ... The dysfunctional group dynamics of the "ingroup" produces an "illusion of invulnerability" (an inflated certainty that the right decision has been made). Thus the "ingroup" significantly overrates its own abilities in decision-making and significantly underrates the abilities of its opponents (the "outgroup").

The repeated removal of my informative and educational factual material from the article is wholly irrational given the stated purpose of Wikipedia.

@AlexAndrews, I did not vandalize the article. I protected it from someone who doesn't understand Wikipedia but thinks they do, and because of that is editing disruptively. But you're certainly free to report me to WP:AIV if you think I'm a vandal or to WP:XRV if you believe my admin action needs scrutiny. Valereee (talk) 23:36, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
As I clearly explained, you did vandalise the article given the stated purpose of Wikipedia that you yourself quoted. You are contradicting yourself and trying to explain away your irrational decision-making by falsely accusing me of editing disruptively (which is, in fact, what the other editors are doing) which I believe is called casting aspersions.

Yet that encyclopedic content I have added has been repeatedly removed - that is the definition of vandalism:

WikiCup 2024 May newsletter

The second round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 April. This round was particularly competitive: each of the 32 contestants who advanced to Round 3 scored at least 141 points. This is the highest number of points required to advance to Round 3 since 2014.

The following scorers in Round 2 all scored more than 500 points:

The full scores for Round 2 can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 18 featured articles, 22 featured lists, and 186 good articles, 76 in the news credits and at least 200 did you know credits. They have conducted 165 featured article reviews, as well as 399 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 21 articles to featured topics and good topics.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed during Round 3, which starts on 1 May at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

  • Kartographer maps can use an alternative visual style without labels, by using mapstyle="osm". This wasn't working in previews, creating the wrong impression that it wasn't supported. This has now been fixed. [27]

  • The appearance of talk pages changed for all wikis, except for Commons, Wikidata and most Wikipedias (a few have already received this design change). You can read the detail of the changes on Diff. It is possible to opt-out these changes in user preferences ("Show discussion activity"). The deployment will happen at remaining wikis in the coming weeks. [30][31]
  • Interface admins now have greater control over the styling of article components on mobile with the introduction of the SiteAdminHelper. More information on how styles can be disabled can be found at the extension's page. [32]
  • Wikimedia Enterprise has added article body sections in JSON format and a curated short description field to the existing parsed Infobox. This expansion to the API is also available via Wikimedia Cloud Services. [33]

UCM article

Hi Valereee. I'm not sure if my message got lost in the hustle and bustle of the talk page, but I've proposed new content which I think balances out concerns we've had with the Universal Classic Monsters article. Basically new sources have come available and the conversation has brought new material to the table that addresses a large chunk of viewing these characters as a franchise from a more serious angle. I've written a basic draft here and normally would just add it to the article, but as I'm being watched on WP:OWN etc, I want to clear the air and have others take a look at the draft first before I edit it in. Tech issue?

I'm sorry I just reverted you. Occasionally I hit rollback by mistake. This is like the third time it's happened and it's frustrating. I have the confirmation prompt (are you sure you want to rollback?) and I always hit no, but this doesn't actually stop it from using rollback?     1. Replace JOIN pagelinks with JOIN linktarget and pl_ with lt_ in the ON statement
    2. Below that add JOIN pagelinks ON lt_id = pl_target_id
