Your comment on TCO's talk
He RTV'd last week. A bot resurrected his talk page. I will delete and salt, I guess, it can be undone if he returns.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:52, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
I have an idea....
US collaborations have been resurrected this year. Going ok, and one (George Washington) has made GA. I reckon these need someone really interested in something to give an article and almighty push to GA or FA. Now I figured you'd be keen to get the big one, so I nominated it there - with a bunch of folks rolling up their sleeves it might get the momentum to get over the line...? WikiCup 2011 July newsletter
We are half way through the penultimate round of this year's WikiCup; there is less than a month to go before we have our final 8. Our pool leaders are Adabow (submissions) (Pool A, 189 points) and PresN (submissions) (Pool B, 165 points). The number of points required to reach the next round is not clear at this time; there are some users who still do not have any recorded points. Please remember to update your submissions' pages promptly. In addition, congratulations to PresN, who scored the first featured topic points in the competition for his work on Thatgamecompany related articles. Most points this round generally have, so far, come from good articles, with only one featured article (White-bellied Sea Eagle, from Casliber (submissions)) and two featured lists (Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story, from PresN and Grammy Award for Best Native American Music Album, from Another Believer (submissions)). Points for Did You Know and good article reviews round out the scoring. No points have been awarded for In the News, good topics or featured pictures this round, and no points for featured sounds or portals have been awarded in the entire competition. On an unrelated note, preparation will be beginning soon for next year's WikiCup- watch this space!
There is little else to be said beyond the usual. Please list anything you need reviewing on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, so others following the WikiCup can help, and please do help if you can by providing reviews for the articles listed there. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews generally at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup- points are, of course, offered for reviews at GAC. Two final notes: Firstly, please remember to state your participation in the WikiCup when nominating articles at FAC. Finally, some WikiCup-related statistics can be seen here and here. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. J Milburn and The ed17 11:46, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Hybrid Time 100 lists
I'm not sure what difference it makes if Time uses polls in making its lists. Are the poll results publicly available, or is there a description of how they are incorporated into the process? If poll data is simply used to inform the editorial selections, then the list is still fundamentally subjective and could have enough creativity for copyright protection. As Dragons flight explained in the discussion way back when, the lists that are excluded from protection are "lists which are derived solely from facts, statistics, or polling data". Time's use of categories already requires editorial decisions to invent the categories and assign who should go in which category, so it's pretty hard to see an argument that the use of polls undermines the potential copyright. --Michael Snow (talk) 23:09, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Highways and FOUR
I scanned through the category of possible FOUR candidates looking for WP:USRD and other highway articles. None were eligible, as most highway articles of some age were created by a different set of editors than the active USRD editing community that is GAN-ing and FAC-ing articles now.
In other constructive criticism, I suggest that you alter your signature to stop linking to your associated pet projects and that you remove your "trophy case" from your talk page. It's completely unnecessary to promote projects like that in your signature (which makes it overly long both in code and in display) and frankly, it's a bit tacky. The list of your awards and credits is more appropriate for your user page. When editors arrive at a user's talk page, the last thing they want to do is scroll down four screenfuls of junk that has nothing to do with leaving you a message, or duplicates a substantial portion of your user page. User pages and talk pages have two separate functions, and I don't care how many baubles and trinkets you've accumulated around here when I'm leaving you a message; if I wanted to know more about you, I'd have clicked on the link to your user page. Imzadi 1979 → 17:35, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
Since you built the initial core of that article around info and links I supplied on the image description page File:Four Freedoms Flag or United Nations Honour Flag ca 1943-1948.svg, under some views it would have been courteous for you to inform me that you were starting the article... AnonMoos (talk) 02:45, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
- I'm not sulking or resentful. But, however good your intentions were, it's reasonably clear that ultimately you were motivated more by a desire to notch up another "DYK" than by any deep interest in or knowledge of the subject matter, and as a result I'll be slowly trying to improve the article for a fairly extended period... It probably would have been a quicker route to a better article to start out in a more collaborative mode. AnonMoos (talk) 14:17, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
- Whatever dude, I am not "crying" about anything, and in fact you seem to be much more emotionally involved than I am, since you're conducting opposition research on me, while I remain somewhat indifferent as to your personal characteristics. Nevertheless, if you had been motivated by a more in-depth or lasting interest in the subject-matter for its own sake (as opposed to drive-by "Wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am" DYK personalistic glory-seeking), then there probably would have been a more productive way of going about things... AnonMoos (talk) 14:52, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
- Unfortunately for you, your invocation of "WP:MERCILESS" was completely off-target, since I haven't offered the slightest objection in this context to having my writing be re-edited (and in fact, I thought at first that you were giving me permission to mercilessly re-edit what you had written!). I merely pointed out that if you had been trying to produce the best possible article and/or had been complying with certain norms of courtesy, then it would have been nice for you to give me a "heads-up" notification. Too bad that you let your egotistical glory-seeking desire for more "DYK" credits override all such considerations. With regards to the vainglorious boasting you left on my user talk page, competition for DYK credits etc. is only useful if it serves the goals of Wikipedia. If it doesn't end up serving the goals of Wikipedia, then it should go the way of Esperanza. AnonMoos (talk) 11:32, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Online Ambassadors: Time to join pods
Hello! If you're planning to be an active Online Ambassador for the upcoming academic term, now is the time to join one or more pods. (A pod consists of the instructor, the Campus Ambassadors, and the Online Ambassadors for single class.) The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) explains the expectations for being part of a pod as an Online Ambassador. (The MOU for pods in Canada is essentially the same.) In short, the role of Online Ambassadors this term consists of:
- Working closely with the instructor and Campus Ambassadors, providing advice and perspective as an experienced Wikipedian
- Helping students who ask for it (or helping them to find the help they need)
- Watching out for the class as a whole
- Helping students to get community feedback on their work
This replaces the 1-on-1 mentoring role for Online Ambassadors that we had in previous terms; rather than being responsible for individual students (some of whom don't want or help or are unresponsive), Online Ambassadors will be there to help whichever students in their class(es) ask for help.
You can browse the upcoming courses here: United States; Canada. More are being added as new pods become active and create their course pages.
Once you've found a class that you want to work with—especially if you some interest or expertise in the topic area—you should sign the MOU listing for that class and get in touch with the instructor. We're hoping to have at least two Online Ambassadors per pod, and more for the larger classes.
If you're up for supporting any kind of class and would like me to assign you to a pod in need of more Online Ambassadors, just let me know.

Harold Washington Cultural Center
The Harold Washington Cultural Center article hasn't gotten much attention since 2007. The article suggests that things haven't been going very well for the center, but that's based on figures that are several years old. How is the center doing today? Also, whatever became of the catering controversy? Zagalejo^^^ 02:35, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for looking into that. I suppose you didn't find any updates for the Catering section? Zagalejo^^^ 17:20, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Checkers speech
Tony:
Thanks for recognizing one of my favorite articles, but I'm almost certain I did not make the first edit to the article; my DYK was for expansion. With my Nixon project brought to a successful conclusion with the promotion of the main article!--Wehwalt (talk) 00:35, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

The film infobox no longer uses these parameters. Just some cleanup. --01:43, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
Tom Hanks Category order
Thanks for your comment.
The seventh bullet point in WP:CAT#Categorizing pages states "Normally the most essential, significant categories appear first." Since what a person does is more important to when they lived, their birth and death date categories should typically not be at the top of the list, and are more appropriate at the end of the category list. Truthanado (talk) 00:40, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
- It's more than opinion and fairly common. As I copyedit new and random articles, I see it on a fairly regular basis. See, for example, Hermes França and Aage Indahl, both of which I stumbled on while randomly patrolling. Perhaps the discussion in WP:CAT should be more precise so that it becomes policy? For Your Eyes Only review
Hi Tony, Thanks for the GA review you undertook recently on For Your Eyes Only. Good call on the grave headstone: see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions for details, but essentially too close to call whether it is protectable or not, so have to err on the side of safety. I'll not be putting it back up and will ensure that it remains off the page. Thanks again. - SchroCat (^ • @) 19:42, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
