You nominated Richard Phillips (captain) and called for the name to be salted. Now that Tom Hanks is portraying Phillips do you think it possible your call for salting was too hasty?

I just checked that {{afd}}. I thought I had weighed in, suggesting a movie would be made, but I don't see that comment. Maybe the afd closed first?

I spent an hour or so working on the article on Chesley Sullenberger during its first day. I have found that there are always overly hasty individuals ready to try to delete articles on individuals like Sullenberger and Phillips before good faith contributors have had a chance to work on those articles. A surprising number of contributors wanted to delete the Sullenberger article. I knew they would claim WP:BLP1E. So I looked for references that predated the landing. The landing tended to drown them out. But I found some, and came to the conclusion Sullenberger would already have been notable, or at least on the cusp of notability, prior to the landing.

Richard Phillips nomination was four years ago. Maybe you aren't so hasty now? If you are still hasty, I am going to suggest the movie should be a reason for you to consider being less hasty. Geo Swan (talk) 05:04, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

Sorry about the missing signature. I used to write fiction articles too, so I know where you are coming from, but fortunately the development of thriving fiction-focused Wikia communities allows for the fiction content to be transwikified there. As we need to enforce WP:N, I think transwikifying articles like this one to relevant wikias is the best compromise. Regarding this particular article, if we had any good sources, we could keep parts of it, probably in the Gundam and popular culture. But without refs, it fails N and OR, and I think we have to re(move) such pages. ANZAC Mounted Division

As there is now a consensus to use Turkish at WPMILHIST and the other editor involved, did not respect the status que. Would you mind if I started editing again? Jim Sweeney (talk) 08:44, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

However there is still this problem on the talk page POV section. This does not deal with the lack of neutral treatment of the light horse and mounted rifles units. They have been variously referred to as the "1st and 3rd Brigades", the "1st Brigade", the "1st and the NZ Brigades", the "2nd Brigade", the "2nd and NZ Brigade's", the "NZ Brigade", the 7th LHR", while the 5th Mounted Brigade is consistently referred in full. This article will remain POV until these names are equally treated. Could you give some advice on that, the 1st Brigade 2nd Brigade and NZ Brigade are organic to the division, mentioned several times and abbreviated, instead of writing out New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade etc at every use. The short form is also used in brackets after the full name in the order of battle section. While brigades not organic to the division with only one or two mentions are given the full name and linked. The obvious solution is I know to write them all out in full but that gets unwieldy. Writing for WP is no longer enjoyable...and the assessors make it so

Hello,

I have benefited greatly from Mr. Bee's critiques and help; indeed, I have been grateful for this, and have spent many hours correcting the list in question in response to his comments. However, his arrogant statement that WP has the right to demand that I jettison my personal ethics in order to get an article promoted is a form of emotional extortion. So is his repeated insistence that I invent statistics. His indifference to the fact that some of his suggestions will wipe out the lead on eight allied lists is irrational, as well as injurious to Wikipedia.

If this had been my first run-in with this type of inventive rulemaking during assessment, I might have toughed it out. However, the constant contemptuous disregard that has been consistently displayed whenever I note instances of assessment procedure contradicting general overall WP policy has become so frustrating that I no longer enjoy writing for WP. I cannot get the assessors to even recognize they have problems. When I realized this, I settled for a policy of slavish obedience to whatever whims assessors have dreamt up. As can be seen by this case, that doesn't work either.

I am a professional writer who has donated his daily writing to WP for over five years. I built the list in question, as well as its eight associated lists, entailing researching and collating over 1,800 names. These nine lists are complete, and can be completely cited. The smaller ones may even be promotable under the assessors' requirement that X length of list needs Y length of lead. I haven't bothered wasting my time mentioning this ludicrous inconsistency to the assessing bureaucrats for them to ignore.

I have also created over 900 articles for WP. The only time I checked, I was the 1,432nd most active Wikipedian in number of edits. I am at the point where I could start pushing some biographies up to FA standards. But why bother? There is no assurance that my diligence will be rewarded with anything other than stressful disappointment.

The fun is gone. So am I, at least concerning lists. When my daily writing stint comes up, I still ponder whether to work on articles to push up the quality scale. If I can ever do that without a feeling of sinking disappointment, I may once again write for WP. Just don't hold your breath waiting.

Re: pleas to return

If you folks ever develop a written checklist(s) of A-List, A-Class, Featured Article, and Featured List requirements that can be referred to, I would give serious consideration to returning because I could pre-edit my work. However, I am not about to undergo any more "assessments via ambush".

The last assessment I was involved in made no changes perceptible to our reader. For this, I spent five years accumulating data to ensure a complete list, and a month's unsuccessful monkeying with code. It was supposed to be an assessment, not a crap shoot.

Why/how a checklist would benefit WP.

"Assessment by ambush" is basically an unfair system of random requirements, for which the newbie cannot prepare. If the excuse for not codifying requirements is that they are constantly evolving, well, so are Wikipedia's articles. If the articles can be written down subject to change, so can the checklist.

Right now, the assessment system is swamped. A checklist would help alleviate that problem. Reading through the checklist would give pause to the unprepared, and delay nominations that are bound to fail until they are truly ready. The actual assessments that are nominated could be processed much more quickly. Better prepared nominations would lessen the assessors' work loads, and speed up the assessment process. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Ottoman Empire–Turkey naming dispute closed

An arbitration case about the behaviour of RoslynSKP (talk · contribs) with regards to the use of the terms 'Turkish' to 'Ottoman', has now closed and the final decision is available at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:

  1. RoslynSKP (talk · contribs) is indefinitely prohibited from changing 'Turkey' or 'Turkish' to 'Ottoman' on any article.
  2. RoslynSKP (talk · contribs)'s topic ban from "editing any article relating to Turkish military history in and predating World War I" is suspended and will be unsuspended (and the prohibition will take effect) if any uninvolved administrator blocks RoslynSKP for misconduct relating to Turkish military history. If the block is reversed or repealed by any of the usual community channels of appeal, the topic ban will lapse back into suspension.
  3. RoslynSKP is prohibited from making any more than one revert on any one page in any 72-hour period.
  4. For a period of one year, RoslynSKP is prohibited from adding maintenance tags, such as {{POV}}, to any article or section of an article without first raising her concern on the talkpage and obtaining the agreement of at least one other editor that the tag is appropriate.
  5. Jim Sweeney (talk · contribs) is reminded to avoid edit warring, and to use dispute resolution to assist in resolving disputes.

Re-Creating the Nathan Han Page

The Nathan Han Page was recently deleted by you because I posted on of his abstracts on the page with his permission but without a GPL. I am looking to rewrite the page. I first wanted to check with you to make sure that was okay and see if I could get all of my pervious work back minus the abstact.

I personally deemed Nathan Han notable because other Intel International Science and Engineering Fair winners have a Wikipedia page. Tom,I am considering going forward with the Nathan Han page even without a response from the Wikiproject Biography. I think I will wait two or three more days to see if they respond. Lucas Browne

Hi TomStar81, I noticed that when I recently created the Lucas Browne article that it was article that had been previously created, and then deleted. However, Lucas Browne has become notable in accordance with WP:NBOX, as he became Commonwealth Heavyweight Boxing Champion on 26 April 2014, i.e. an inter-continental title, with the Commonwealth Boxing Council being affiliated to the World Boxing Council. Deletion reconsideration

Hi Tom, would you reconsider your decision to delete the page on the Salvation Sect? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvation_sect Can the article be WP:USERFIED to my user space? I did see the article, but had not contributed, before its deletion. Granted some material was poorly sourced, but it can be rewritten to take into account the numerous articles appearing daily about the sect and the man hunt for its leader. Please be more careful when speedy deleting pages. You deleted Norman Alvis for A1 and A7, neither of which are correct. The article had plenty of context, and clear claims to notability. Being a professional sporter should be enough to avoid speedy (though it may get you deleted at AfD); winning the American Championship is a very clear claim to notability. I have restored the page, you may take it to AfD if you disagree, but I'll argue for a keep there and expect a snow keep for it. Fram (talk) 06:49, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Hacky (possible) solution for you

Do you know about the mw:qqx trick? To see the effect, click on this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:TomStar81?uselang=qqx It shows you names of the "automatic" or software-provided elements on any given page. They're all in the MediaWiki: namespace. For example, the thing that normally says "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia" at the top of the page is represented by (tagline) in this "language", and the actual file is at MediaWiki:Tagline. In theory, if there were already a suitable element on the page, then the cheatsheet you'd like could be appended to it.
