Recent changes

  • The system for automatically creating categories for the Babel extension has had several important changes and fixes. One of them allows you to insert templates for automatic category descriptions on creation, allowing you to categorize the new categories. [1][2][3][4][5]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 April. It will be on all wikis from 6 April (calendar).
  • Some older Web browsers will stop being able to use JavaScript on Wikimedia wikis from this week. This mainly affects users of Internet Explorer 11. If you have an old web browser on your computer you can try to upgrade to a newer version. [6]
  • The deprecated jquery.hoverIntent module has been removed. This module could be used by gadgets and user scripts, to create an artificial delay in how JavaScript responds to a hover event. Gadgets and user scripts should now use jQuery hover() or on() instead. Examples can be found in the migration guide. [7]
  • Some of the links in Special:SpecialPages will be re-arranged. There will be a clearer separation between links that relate to all users, and links related to your own user account. [8]
  • You will be able to hide the Reply button in archived discussion pages with a new __ARCHIVEDTALK__ magic word. There will also be a new .mw-archivedtalk CSS class for hiding the Reply button in individual sections on a page. [9][10][11]

Future changes

  • The Vega software that creates data visualizations in pages, such as graphs, will be upgraded to the newest version in the future. Graphs that still use the very old version 1.5 syntax may stop working properly. Most existing uses have been found and updated, but you can help to check, and to update any local documentation. Examples of how to find and fix these graphs are available.

Could you please write your deletion rationales in English, rather than using the abbreviations that may be known to Wikipedia insiders but are not to the majority of our readers? Or if you must use abbreviations then at least link them so that people can discover what they mean. The discussions that prompted this message were Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of international presidential trips made by Dmitry Medvedev and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Morad: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 47, but nearly all of your nominations seem to have this flaw. Thanks for the encouragement, its enjoyable since I don't have any strong opinions on football (American or otherwise) so I don't take any of the discussions personally (unless someone messes with the Bruins, Beavers, or Cardinals).
I am glad it seems BLP is being taken more seriously now. BLP is something I feel strongly about; a well-meaning but misguided individual attempting to ingratiate themselves with me created a article about me, and I (a good, but decidedly private non notable individual) wasn't pleased at all. It actually caused a brief but quickly dismissed issue with an organization I worked with (which is how I discovered the article).   • Starting on Wednesday, a new set of Wikipedias will get "Add a link" (Moroccan Arabic Wikipedia, Danish Wikipedia, Dinka Wikipedia, Lower Sorbian Wikipedia, Ewe Wikipedia, Greek Wikipedia, Emiliano-Romagnolo Wikipedia, Esperanto Wikipedia, Estonian Wikipedia, Basque Wikipedia, Extremaduran Wikipedia, Tumbuka Wikipedia, Fulah Wikipedia, Finnish Wikipedia, Võro Wikipedia, Fijian Wikipedia, Faroese Wikipedia, Arpitan Wikipedia, Northern Frisian Wikipedia, Friulian Wikipedia, Irish Wikipedia, Guianan Creole Wikipedia, Scottish Gaelic Wikipedia, Galician Wikipedia, Gilaki Wikipedia, Guarani Wikipedia, Goan Konkani Wikipedia, Gothic Wikipedia, Gujarati Wikipedia, Manx Wikipedia). Hi Timothy - typically, a nominator doesn't include Delete: at the top of their nomination rationale, as it can be confusing. The nomination itself is considered to be sufficient. By adding the !vote, (especially with a bullet), it makes it look like the page was nominated without a rationale and that you're supporting the deletion as a second editor. I recommend removing the bullet and the bolded text. pburka (talk) 16:21, 11 April 2023 (UTC)

Timothy, I'm not too bothered about the nomination containing a bolded "delete", as that is only for the closer who should be able to work out what is going on, but I am bothered about half of the first fourteen words of the nomination being unlinked abbreviations. Deletion discussions should be readable by anyone with a reasonable grasp of English, not just regular Wikipedia editors. Phil Bridger (talk) 18:15, 11 April 2023 (UTC)

Regarding the Peacock Throne article

Hi, the article on Peacock Throne was created by me which I felt noteworthy when I am recently reading Firishta's Tarik-i-Firishta, a reliable source on the medieval history of India. While I am still editing the article it was found that the article is moved by you into the Bahamani Sultanate page. So, I have restored it again and now adding more content to it. Now, I see that you have suggested removing that article. May I know the valid reason for that? Would you mind providing me with some guidance on how to keep the article? I am opinion that we need more articles that shed light on the history of Deccan region which had its own great share in the heritage of India. I am interested to devote some time to enlarging that article with more informative content. It seems that by the time Firishta mentioned that turquoise throne, it already became part of the Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur. I need more time to gather more information about that and put that on the page. I am very occupied with my daily job and nowadays I seldom contribute to Wikipedia. I wish I could do more in the coming days. I would be grateful if you can help me in improving the quality of that article about the Turquoise throne. Thank you. 125 feet Ambedkar statue, Hyderabad

Hello, You merged the tallest "Ambedkar Statue" with "B. R. Ambedkar". The total height of this magnificent statue is 175 feet with a 50 feet high pedestal. This is a "notable" statue, and deserves a separate article. Articles on this statue are also available on Telugu and Marathi Wikipedia. There are also many pictures of the statue available on Commons. So please let there be a separate article on this statue of Ambedkar. Recent changes

  • Last week, Community Tech released the first update for providing better diffs, the #1 request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. This update adds legends and tooltips to inline diffs so that users unfamiliar with the blue and yellow highlights can better understand the type of edits made.
  • When you close an image that is displayed via MediaViewer, it will now return to the wiki page instead of going back in your browser history. This feature request was voted #65 in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [35]
  • The SyntaxHighlight extension now supports wikitext as a selected language. Old alternatives that were used to highlight wikitext, such as html5, moin, and html+handlebars, can now be replaced. [36]
  • Preloading text to new pages/sections now supports preloading from localized MediaWiki interface messages. Here is an example at the Czech Wikipedia that uses preload=MediaWiki:July. [37]

Problems

  • Graph Extension update: Foundation developers have completed upgrading the visualization software to Vega5. Existing community graphs based on Vega2 are no longer compatible. Communities need to update local graphs and templates, and shared lua modules like de:Modul:Graph. The Vega Porting guide provides the most comprehensive detail on migration from Vega2 and here is an example migration. Vega5 has currently just been enabled on mediawiki.org to provide a test environment for communities. [38]

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 May. It will be on all wikis from 11 May (calendar).
  • Until now, all new OAuth apps went through manual review. Starting this week, apps using identification-only or basic authorizations will not require review. [39]

Clarifying draftspace move

Hi there @TimothyBlue,

I wanted to ask you about moving my article (Morgenshtern discography) to a draftspace. Was it because of the weird text on top of the "Lead singer" chart or was there something else that needed to be addressed? If that's the only thing, it should be a quick fix. @TimothyBlue ok, that makes sense. I fixed that table with the text at the top, but I'm not entirely sure about changing that symbol. I think that's how that style is like for Russian. @TimothyBlue Actually, that probably won't be necessary for citations. I checked the references under the "Apple Music" and "Spotify" sections of that chart, and they do say that the albums charted at those positions stated. Now, the albums you placed citation tags for did not chart at all, but they are part of Morgenshtern's discography. Would his albums in general need sources from, say, Apple Music and Spotify? I'm not entirely sure. But that's certainly plausible. I can definitely try to find some citations. Losipov (talk) 22:28, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
The entries need some kind of independent reliable source. Some sections such as for example, Draft:Morgenshtern discography#Singles I can't verify the entries from the sources provided. Maybe I'm missing something, if I am let me know.  // Timothy :: talk  23:06, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
@TimothyBlue so would an article at least mentioning the singles be considered ok to use? If not Apple Music or Spotify or something like those? Someone could simply look at both streaming services, for example, and see that he has those singles. And yes, those sources that are in the Singles section cover only the ones that charted, not the ones that didn't. I understand that part. Somewhere there must be an online non-promotional discography from a reliable independent source and this would be best to use. I checked English sources such as AllMusic and Discogs and they don't list anything but albums. Another option is you can submit this to AfC (see instructions at top of page) and they will provide a second opinion, and maybe better guidance. @TimothyBlue Yeah that's what I was planning on doing actually. I might just submit it for review and see if it can be accepted in its current form (I'll do my best to try and improve the article in the meantime). I should say that other articles I translated had considerably fewer sources, and they've been reviewed/accepted (aside from tagging the articles for varying issues).
How would I let them know about our conversation? Is one way like this: the article gets reviewed and denied, and I contact the editor who denied it and point out this conversation? I don't know honestly.

  • VisualEditor will be switched to a new backend on small and medium wikis this week. Large wikis will follow in the coming weeks. This is part of the effort to move Parsoid into MediaWiki core. The change should have no noticeable effect on users, but if you experience any slow loading or other strangeness when using VisualEditor, please report it on the phabricator ticket linked here. Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

  • Citation and footnote editing can now be started from the reference list when using the visual editor. This feature request was voted #2 in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [53]
  • Previously, clicking on someone else's link to Recent Changes with filters applied within the URL could unintentionally change your preference for "Group results by page". This has now been fixed. [54]

Problems

  • For a few days last week, some tools and bots returned outdated information due to database replication problems, and may have been down entirely while it was being fixed. These issues have now been fixed. [55]

All Wikipedians in good standing are eligible and self-nominations are welcomed; it's your Guild and it doesn't organize itself!

Blitz: Of the 17 editors who signed up for our April Copy Editing Blitz, nine editors completed at least one copy-edit. Between them, they copy-edited 24 articles totaling 53,393 words. Barnstars awarded are here.
